DIY Travel Lego Case

DIY Lego Travel Case

Lego is a great way to build your child's fine motor, creativity, and problem solving skills. My boys (2 and 4) are finally enjoying this challenging, open-ended toy. It's definitely tricky to build things with their small hands, but they love using their imagination to create houses and castles and cars. So when we went on vacation a couple of weeks ago, I wanted to bring some Lego with us on our flight to keep them busy. Sounds like a terrible idea, doesn't it?! To contain the chaos I purchased a couple of food containers to use as storage and the base for their creations.

  • Sturdy food container or pencil box (I used Sistema Sandwich containers )
  • Lego Base Plates

First, I measured the inside of the container lid. This will be our base and where we'll glue our base plate. I cut the base plate using scissors down a size that would fit in the lid. I used crazy glue to secure the base plate to the lid and let it dry.

Once dry, you can fill the container with select pieces. Since we were bring these travel cases on the plane, I left the tiniest pieces at home. Close the container and you're all set!

The most challenging part was having to explain to Darcy that we'd have to take it apart his masterpiece because we wouldn't be able to close the container. He wasn't too happy about that. We can't win them all, right?

How To Make A DIY Travel Lego Case For Kids

This DIY travel lego case for kids is a simple, easy project that will provide hours of entertainment. It is an awesome birthday or Christmas gift for the lego lover in your life.

lego binder sitting on table with baseplate, large lego container and legos on table

This post contains affiliate links, which means I will make a small commission at no extra cost to you. See my full disclosure  here .

The best part about this gift is that it can be a perfect gift for kids of all ages. My 3 year old loves it as much as my 9 year old does. It is a perfect activity to pull out at a doctor appointment, restaurant or on long car rides. I would put this portable lego kit on my top 3 things to bring on long road trips with kids.

I know that Christmas time can be overwhelming when thinking of gifts and budgets are often tight. This gift costs less than 15$ and is so easy to make, making it a great option for this holiday season.

Supplies to Make DIY Lego Travel Case

  • Pencil Case (with 3 holes) (you can often find this around 1$ during back to school shopping season)
  • Lego Baseplate
  • Lego bricks (You can easily use Legos you already have)
  • Utility Knife
  • 3M Double Sided Mounting Tape or Command Strips
  • Personalized Printable Cover (free printable is later in this post)

lego box, baseplate, pencil pouch, gorilla tape, free legos & binder sitting on table

How To Make DIY Lego Travel Binder

This is one of the simplest gifts I have made in a long time. It takes less than 5 minutes to assemble and is pretty straight-forward for those less crafty people. 🙂

  • Take out your Lego baseplates and measure it against the inside of your binder
  • Use your utility knife to cut the Lego building plate to size. For mine I had to cut off 2 rows, but it may be different depending on the size of baseplate you purchase.
  • Take your 3M tape or Command Strips and adhere it onto the back of your baseplate and place the baseplate onto the inside cover of your binder. You could also use a hot glue gun to do this as well.
  • Add your pencil pouch to the 3 rings & add in your legos. If you are making this for a younger kid I would recommend bulkier Lego pieces, these are easier for little hands to manipulate versus the small pieces.
  • Complete with the personalized cover sheet, the free printable for this is later in this post.

That’s it! In the words of my 3 year old, easy-peasy lemon squeezy.

When To Use Your Lego Binder

There are so many ways to use this binder. Here are a few ideas for you:

  • Family Roadtrips

My family goes on a lot of road trips so our binders almost always live in our car. I would highly recommend letting each child have their own lego travel kit. Long road trips can be daunting and we try to keep screen time for special times (like when my kids are almost at their max during the trip) so this is a great activity to have ready to go. This post talks through tips and tricks when going on a road trip with kids . I also have a list of my favorite kids screen-free activities for road trips (including travel toys).

  • Day To Day Outings

You can also use these when out at restaurants or the doctor’s office. It is a great activity to bring along when you are going somewhere that may not have many activities for your child but you know they will need some type of entertainment. The binder is a perfect size to fit into a backpack or diaper bag when out and about. I wish I had these binders when we took our kids to Disney World, it would have been the perfect activity while we were waiting in line for rides.

Tips & Tricks

You could put together lego bricks to make a specific lego set, you can include the instructions in the pocket of the binder and put the lego pieces in the case. This is a fun idea if your kids are looking for another way to play with their diy lego case.

DIY Travel Lego Case opened up on ground with smile face made out of legos

The flat legos can be tricky to take off the lego plate. I would recommend that you have a Lego remove tool in each lego travel kit to avoid frustration when trying to take legos off of the base plate.

If you are looking for a fun kid’s activity to add to your binder I strongly recommend checking out these free printable lego challenge cards. They are a great addition to your child’s binder and provide some ideas on how to create when your child is feeling stuck. For an added twist you can make the challenges a game and have a time limit and then everyone can share their creation. This is an awesome STEM activity!

Free Printable Cover Sheet

Here is the free printable cover sheet for you to use to personalize your child’s binder. This link should bring you to a printable PDF file. The line above the title is for you to put in your child’s name. I highly recommend printing this out in color as it provides a little extra fun to the binder. This cover sheet is a great way to put that extra special touch on this present.

I hope your little one loves this lego travel binder as much as my kiddos do. I would love to hear how you plan to use this with your kids!

The Brothers Brick

World's no. 1 source for lego news, reviews, and fan creations., tag archives: russia, st. basil’s cathedral is bursting with colour.

Koen Zwanenburg has built this incredible recreation of the iconic Russian cathedral. The dark orange with hints of teal are the most prominent colours in the structure, however, it is the spires that really draw in the eye. Each has its own unique colour scheme and design from jagged blocky shapes to smooth flowing textures. Koen has found inventive ways to represent the swirling patterns of the spires as green minifigure arms are even used in one of the peaks.

St. Basil’s Cathedral

Round the back of the display, horned tendrils portray more of the complex designs of the spires. After looking at the building for some time, the structure shares some similarities with gingerbread houses, mainly thanks to the white trim and vibrant colours used in this creation.

The Soviet ZIL-E167 can handle any terrain you throw at it

It’s a little cold in my LEGO room so I turned up the heat and put on a sweater. That leads me to believe that I probably don’t have what it takes to handle the real cold like what they have in Siberia and Urals. There’s a reason there are so many jokes about vodka drinking you in Russia or whatever. Tough terrain means tough people and tough vehicles. Thankfully, SarielLego has what it takes to handle any terrain as evidenced by this remote-controlled ZIL-E167. I’m loving the beefy tires, the orange color, the overall rugged shape, even the little moose decal is rather charming.

Tough and mean and olive green! Hoorah!

The reason the original castle set from 1978 was yellow and not gray is that LEGO didn’t want to encourage kids to build military stuff. All that changed with the abundance of gray in the Star Wars sets. Still they had similar hesitancy with olive green. It took the Pixar Cars line in 2011 to introduce the color and military builders rejoiced. So there, the joke is on you, LEGO! (That was much funnier when I thought of it earlier today.) While this particular shade of green is now available in many sets, it’s still a difficult color to amass in large quantities. That is just one of many reasons why this rough and tumble Soviet Ural-375D by Rolands Kirpis is so impressive. Another reason is each axle and the steering functions are run by Power Functions motors. It took a year to collect all the right parts to build this model but the end result is as mighty as the Ural mountains.

LEGO Soyuz launcher stands 1.25m high and took a year and a half to build

Since it’s first flight in 1966, the Russian Soyuz rocket system has become the world’s most frequently used launch vehicle. With over 1,700 flights in 50 years, this Russian stalwart has hauled cosmonauts, satellites, and cargo aloft, with its relatively simple design creating an enviable reliability record. However, this LEGO version of the latest Fregat version of the Soyuz is anything but simple — Jussi Koskinen has pulled out all the stops to capture every last feature of the spacecraft’s detailing. The scale of the effort involved is impressive — the model took 18 months to put together, and measures over 1.25m.

LEGO Russian Space Rocket

The overall structure of this massive model is excellent, and the shaping and angles on the lower boosters are particularly good. The smaller details are worth a look too — don’t miss the texturing around the base of the boosters, the scaffold-style connection between stages, and the nice integration of the Russian flag into the upper stage’s colour scheme. This formidable model wouldn’t look out of place on display beside the LEGO Ideas Saturn 5 set, and that’s high praise indeed.

Colorfully camoflauged Sukhoi SU-34 Fighter-bomber

I’ve always wondered why we don’t paint our military jets with blue camouflage so they blend in with the blue sky. Well, after a quick Google search, it appears that the Russians thought the same thing, because the wonderful camoflauge pattern on this Sukhoi SU-34 by ModernBrix is indeed accurate to the real-life jet . It’s an excellent choice, because we rarely see this type of camouflage pattern recreated in LEGO.

Sukhoi SU-34 Medium-Range Fighter/Bomber

Camouflage aside, the shaping is outstanding, especially on the cockpit and fuselage. The builder has also managed to fit side-by-side seating for two pilots in the cockpit — an uncommon feature the Sukhoi is known for — which eliminates the need for duplicate instruments required in the front and back of tandem seat fighter jets.

Nine chapels of St. Basil’s Cathedral are a marvelous example of LEGO microscale architecture

Markus Rollbühler is a LEGO product designer based in Billund, Denmark. Despite spending his weekdays working with LEGO pieces, Markus challenges himself to build microscale versions of the world’s most famous cathedrals in his spare time. His very special series of architectural masterpieces featuring Frauenkirche Dresden and Santa Maria della Salute is now joined by a marvelous copy of St. Basil’s Cathedral in Moscow, Russia.

St. Basil's Cathedral, Moscow

St. Basil’s Cathedral is famous for its nine chapels of vibrant colors. Markus did an amazing job recreating each of them in a unique building style using bricks, hoses, slopes, and tiles of over a dozen different colors. However, the most genius trick of the build is nine sonic screwdrivers right from Doctor Who sets used as crosses on top of the chapels.

St. Basil's Cathedral, Moscow

And, of course, the cathedral is totally worth checking out from all angles — make sure you visit Markus’ photosream for more high-res pictures!

Flying the unfriendly skies

From his Flickr stream, it’s clear that builder arwen qiea is a Cold War military vehicle buff. It’s an impressive portfolio of (mostly Soviet) tanks, missile carriers and navy vessels from the 50s and 60s. But his gigantic airplanes kind of steal the limelight! Here’s his latest one, a model of the Soviet TU-135, an experimental supersonic bomber from that era.

travel lego case

From that angle, the TU-135 seems almost as sleek as a modern Russian fighter jet. But from a higher vantage point you can see why it was nicknamed the “flying wing”.

travel lego case

So that’s a pretty big plane, right? Nope. THIS is a big plane…

travel lego case

…say hello to the Russian Antonov AN-22, probably the largest turboprop ever built. And the big builds don’t stop there. His version of the Lockheed C5a Galaxy (a heavy transport used by the USAF) is so big it literally eats other LEGO models for breakfast!
