AIDA Cruises returns to Riga (Latvia) after 5-year hiatus

CruiseMapper logo

This season, AIDA Cruises returns to Riga (Latvia) with 9 scheduled calls across 3 ships, marking the end of a 5-year hiatus.

An AIDA spokesperson stated they are pleased to return to this wonderful port, offering their guests the diverse experiences of the Baltic. AIDA Cruises have more calls planned than in 2019, with 9 calls expected in both 2024 and 2025. Their shore excursion program caters to all preferences, from quick overviews of Riga to full-day trips to Kemeri National Park or Jurmala.

On average, 40% of AIDA passengers participate in land tours, which is a typical rate for shore excursions. These tours include various thematic excursions around the capital, such as cultural and local tourism programs and culinary tours. Other options include visits to the picturesque town of Sigulda and Rundale Palace, as well as guided walks along marsh paths.

Most cruise tourists arriving in Riga are from Germany. In 2023, German cruise passengers accounted for 40% of all cruise tourists, totaling 32.7 thousand passengers. This year, Riga anticipates even more German visitors due to AIDA's return.

This season, the port has 68 calls planned.

Following discussions at Seatrade Cruise Global with cruise line representatives, Riga has secured calls from several companies for their world cruise itineraries in 2025 and 2026.

Swedish court acquits former Syrian army general accused of role in war crimes

  • Copy Link copied

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — A Swedish judge on Thursday acquitted a former Syrian army general of indiscriminate attacks on civilians in his home country more than a decade ago, saying prosecutors failed to provide evidence of his involvement in the war crimes.

Brig. Gen. Mohammed Hamo, who now lives in Sweden, was charged in February with aiding and abetting crimes against international law. Prosecutors said that as head of the Ordnance Department of the Syrian Army’s 11th Division, he was responsible for providing the weapons that were used to commit war crimes in 2012.

The prosecutor alleged that Hamo, described by Swedish news agency TT as the highest-ranking officer to stand trial in a European court for such crimes in Syria, had participated in the division’s indiscriminate attacks on military and civilian targets in the Syrian cities of Homs and Hama.

The Stockholm District Court said it was clear that the Syrian army’s warfare included “indiscriminate attacks” that violated international law. But Judge Katarina Fabian said prosecutors did not produce sufficient evidence to convict Hamo.

Image

During the trial, the prosecution chiefly relied on video clips, photographs and testimonies to paint a broad picture of the period showing shelling and fighting between Syrian Army and armed groups. The videos included documentaries by the British Broadcasting Corporation to depict the situation in the region around Homs in 2011 and 2012. None of the material implicated directly Hamo.

Little is known about the 65-year-old Hamo. In June 2012, he was transferred to northern Syria, and the following month he decided to leave the army and fled to Turkey. There, he joined a group that was fighting against the Syrian regime.

He traveled to Sweden in 2015, where he sought asylum. He was granted asylum, but Sweden’s Migration Board informed the authorities that Hamo was previously “a senior officer within the framework of an army that was systematically considered to have committed violations of human rights,” the court said.

Hamo was living in central Sweden when he was arrested on December 7, 2021. A court at the time released him two days later, saying there wasn’t enough evidence to keep him incarcerated. He has since been free.

The unrest in Syria between Assad’s regime and opposition groups began in March 2011, and later exploded into a civil war that has killed nearly half a million people and displaced half the country’s pre-war population of 23 million.

Chief prosecutor Karolina Wieslander said there was no decision yet on whether to appeal the ruling.

She it had been “a tough case to investigate” because the country was still at war, making it “hard to gather evidence.” She said it was a positive sign that the court ruled that “what the Syrian government did was war crimes.”

A lawyer for the eight plaintiffs who backed the case against Hamo told Swedish broadcaster SVT that they need to read the verdict before deciding whether to appeal.

The plaintiffs included a man whose brother was killed in attacks on Homs, as well as a British and a French journalist — Edith Bouvier and Paul Conroy — who were injured in an attack on a media center in Baba Amr in February 2012. Veteran war correspondent Marie Colvin was killed in the same attack.

Aida Samani of the Stockholm-based Civil Rights Defenders, a politically independent human rights organization which had been present during the trial but was not a part of it, said the news was disappointing for the victims and the thousands of others affected by the attacks.

She added that it was believed the first time that a court of law recognized the attacks in the said period as war crimes.

Hamo maintained his innocence throughout the trial at the Stockholm District Court, which took place from April 15 to May 21.

Pilgrim Deaths in Mecca Put Spotlight on Underbelly of Hajj Industry

More than 1,300 people died, and a Saudi official said most of them were not registered for the pilgrimage. That left them with little protection from the heat.

By Emad Mekay and Vivian Nereim

Emad Mekay reported from Cairo and Vivian Nereim from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

More than 1,300 people died making the Islamic pilgrimage of hajj in Saudi Arabia this month, the vast majority of whom the Saudi government said did not have permits. Many walked for miles in scorching heat after paying thousands of dollars to illicit or fraudulent tour operators.

While pilgrims with permits are transported around the holy city of Mecca in air-conditioned buses and rest in air-conditioned tents, unregistered ones are often exposed to the elements. In recent days, as temperatures surpassed 120 degrees, some pilgrims described watching people faint and passing bodies in the street.

On Sunday, in an interview on state television, the Saudi health minister, Fahd al-Jalajel, said that 83 percent of the 1,301 reported deaths involved pilgrims who lacked permits.

“The rise in temperatures during the hajj season represented a big challenge this year,” he said. “Unfortunately — and this is painful for all of us — those who didn’t have hajj permits walked long distances under the sun.”

Mr. al-Jalajel’s remarks came after days of silence from the Saudi government over the fatalities during the hajj, an arduous and deeply spiritual ritual that Muslims are encouraged to perform once in their lifetimes if they are physically and financially able.

With nearly two million participating each year, it is not unusual for pilgrims to die from heat stress, illness or chronic disease. It is unclear if the number of deaths this year was higher than usual, because Saudi Arabia does not regularly report those statistics. Last year, 774 pilgrims died from Indonesia alone, and in 1985, more than 1,700 people died around the holy sites, most of them from heat stress, a study at the time found.

An aerial view of a vast complex of tents.

But because so many of those who died had no permits, this year’s toll exposed an underbelly of tour operators and smugglers around the world who profit off Muslims desperate to make the journey.

The deaths also laid bare what appeared to be a wide-scale failure of Saudi immigration and security procedures aimed at preventing unregistered pilgrims from reaching the holy sites, including a security cordon around Mecca that locks down weeks before hajj.

Despite those efforts, an estimated 400,000 undocumented people tried to perform the pilgrimage this year, a senior Saudi official told Agence France-Presse, speaking on the condition of anonymity. The hajj has also been the scene of several catastrophes over the years, including a stampede in 2015 that killed more than 2,200 people .

Saudi officials did not respond to requests for comment.

In interviews with The New York Times, however, hajj tour operators, pilgrims and relatives of the dead described easily exploited loopholes that allow people to travel to the kingdom with a tourist or visitor visa ahead of hajj, usually assisted by tour operators in their home countries. Once they arrive, they find a network of illegal brokers and smugglers who offer their services and sometimes abandon them to fend for themselves, they said.

The number of unregistered pilgrims appears to have been driven up this year by rising economic desperation in countries like Egypt and Jordan. An official hajj package can cost more than $5,000 or $10,000, depending on a pilgrim’s country of origin — beyond the means of many hoping to make the trip.

Marwa, a 32-year-old Egyptian woman whose parents performed hajj without an official permit this year, said that they had paid around $2,000 for their journey, facilitated by an agent in Egypt and a broker in Saudi Arabia. They felt that they had to go soon because, as Egypt’s currency loses value , their savings shrink every year, she said. Marwa asked to be identified only by her first name to avoid legal repercussions.

Several countries with large numbers of deceased pilgrims have moved quickly to contain the fallout.

On Friday, the president of Tunisia, which counted more than 50 pilgrims among the dead, fired the country’s religious affairs minister. In Jordan, which recorded the deaths of at least 99 pilgrims, the public prosecutor opened an investigation into illegal hajj routes. And in Egypt, the authorities said that they would revoke the licenses of 16 companies that issued visas to pilgrims without providing adequate services.

“There’s so much greed around this business,” said Iman Ahmed, a co-owner of El-Iman Tours in Cairo.

Ms. Ahmed said that she refused to send unregistered pilgrims on hajj packages but that other Egyptian tour operators and Saudi brokers made big money doing so.

One unregistered pilgrim who died was Safaa al-Tawab, a grandmother from the Egyptian city of Luxor, according to her brother, Ahmed al-Tawab. Ms. al-Tawab, 55, had not been able to obtain a hajj permit but found an Egyptian tour company to take her for around $3,000, he said.

Ms. al-Tawab did not realize that she was violating the rules when she traveled to Saudi Arabia, her brother said, and after she arrived, she told relatives that she had been put in inadequate housing and prevented from going outside. While the tour operator had promised air-conditioned buses to take the pilgrims around Mecca, she instead found herself walking for miles in the heat, Mr. al-Tawab said.

Before the hajj, the Saudi authorities posted billboards and sent a barrage of text messages reminding people that it is illegal to perform the pilgrimage without a permit; violators face fines, deportation and bans on re-entering the kingdom.

Entry to Mecca was barred weeks before hajj for visitors without permits. Yet many pilgrims were able to evade the restrictions, arriving in Mecca early and hiding out, or paying smugglers to ferry them into the city.

One Jordanian pilgrim, who asked to be identified only as Um Abdulrahman, a nickname, because she feared repercussions, said that she encountered several smugglers to help her move around Mecca, including one who charged around $200 to drive her into the city over a rocky mountain route. But she ended up walking for hours in the sun without access to water or bathrooms, she said.

At one point, the police briefly detained her group, wrote down their names and left them in the middle of nowhere, she said. Um Abdulrahman, 49, said she knew her journey was illegal, but that she had not fully grasped the risks.

Even for the young and fit, the hajj is a physically challenging event, and many pilgrims are elderly or ailing by the time they can make the journey. Some believe that the hajj might be their final rite, and that dying in Mecca will confer great blessings.

The Saudi government deploys measures to reduce the effects of extreme heat, including spraying pilgrims with mists of water. One recent study estimated that the incidence of heat stroke at hajj had actually declined — although the researchers warned that could shift as worsening heat caused by climate change outpaces measures to mitigate it.

Abdulhalim Dahir, 31, a Kenyan pilgrim who made the hajj with his brother and father using official permits, said that his journey was smooth, with air-conditioned tents, air-conditioned buses and easy access to water.

“It was an amazing experience — once in a lifetime,” he said.

But even some who were in Mecca legally complained about inadequate facilities for the heat.

Makhdoom Ali, 36, a Pakistani computer engineer who traveled there with his 65-year-old mother, said he had seen several pilgrims collapse from heat exhaustion with no immediate assistance available.

“Many lives could have been saved with better government arrangements,” Mr. Ali said.

Mr. al-Jalajel, the health minister, said that one quarter of the health services provided during hajj were rendered to undocumented pilgrims. “We look at them as a pilgrim, regardless of their permit, race or nationality,” he said.

Among the dead were at least two Americans.

Isatu Wurie, 65, and Alieu Wurie, 71 — Maryland residents — had saved for years to make the pilgrimage, paying $23,000 to a local tour operator, said their daughter, Saida Wurie.

But after they arrived in Mecca, the operator told them to stay in their hotel until permits were issued for them, they told their daughter. Her parents were frustrated because they had believed they were going “by the book,” Ms. Wurie said.

They were still able to perform some of the initial rituals of hajj, and they were “so excited to see the Kaaba,” she said — the cubic structure that Muslims believe was the first house of worship.

The last message she received from her mother said that a bus to take them to one of the sites had not arrived, and that they had been walking for two hours instead.

Despite her frustration at the tour operator, as well as the difficulty of locating their bodies — buried in Mecca — Ms. Wurie believes her parents were filled with joy in their final days.

“They died doing exactly what they wanted to do,” she said. “They’ve always wanted to make it to hajj.”

Smart travel

Smart travel

We combine environmental protection and dream-like vacations.

At AIDA, we believe that acting sustainably and creating unforgettable vacation memories go hand in hand. We inform our travel agency partners and our guests about our commitment. We are also continuously expanding our selection of sustainable and attractive excursions. The “AIDA Friends of the Ocean” organization is actively committed to marine and coastal protection.

We offer our guests the possibility to inform themselves in detail before their cruise and to book excursions and events.

Bike excursions

Bike excursions

AIDA biking excursions offer many advantages: They are healthy, environmentally friendly, and give guests a more authentic experience in the destination region. Biking excursions have been a part of our program for a long time and we continuously expand our offers.

All AIDA ships are furnished with up to 120 bicycles, including E-bikes. We currently offer more than 250 attractive biking excursions for every difficulty level and these are immensely popular among our guests. The number of AIDA guests who go on excursions with bicycles or E-bikes is growing every year, because bicycles allow for a particularly in-depth exploration of the destinations. Whether you prefer a relaxed discovery tour or sporty active tour: Our Soft, Soft Active, Active & Introductory tours offer something for everyone. On our tours with electric bikes, the tailwind is already included. All biking excursions are accompanied by professional AIDA biking guides.

Another alternative for environmentally friendly transportation that is just as fun consists of our Segway tours. If you have any questions about our tours, please contact the AIDA biking team directly at [email protected] .

Sustainable shore excursions

Sustainable shoreside excursions

Sustainably designed shore excursions do not just allow our guests to enjoy unforgettable experiences; they can also play an important part in economic development, protecting and promoting the environment, preserving cultural heritage, and helping maintain the livelihoods of local populations. We sent a clear signal for sustainable tourism when we signed the UN-WTO Code of Ethics for Tourism in 2012. When it comes to “sustainable shoreside excursions,” AIDA Cruises is one of the pioneers in the cruise industry and continuously expands its offer.

In 2013 we developed standardized criteria for sustainable shoreside excursions with the sustainability initiative Futouris e.V. and the State Chancellery Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania as well as the Leuphana University in Luneburg as part of a cooperative project. The goal was to create a transparent basis of comparison for the sustainability of the individual excursion offers and to base the evaluation on measurable and scientific criteria.

In early 2014, the Baltic Sea was assessed as being a model region based on the new catalog of criteria. By the end of 2014, the assessment model had been transferred to AIDA shore excursions in all destination regions.

All AIDA excursions that fulfill social, ecological and cultural criteria are specially marked with a tree symbol. As early as during the excursion booking on MyAIDA, our guests can therefore see which of the offers are particularly sustainable.

The four main criteria for the evaluation of the individual excursions include the transport performance, the contents or focus of the excursion (e.g. culture, nature, etc.), the food offers and the sustainability engagement of the local partner agency. There are also numerous secondary points that are integrated into the evaluation. With respect to the transport component, preventing CO2 emissions is the top priority. Biking excursions leaving directly from the ship are thus scored higher than using low-emission buses. If the commissioned local agency offsets the CO2 emissions produced by an excursion, then this also positively impacts the assessment. Nature excursions are also scored particularly high on sustainability if, for example, a trained ranger tells the visitors about wildlife conservation and special aspects. Dining options is another main topic. Sustainable excursions are focused on using regional products for local specialties. Complying with minimum standards for the staff of our agencies on site according to the core labor standards of the ILO (International Labour Organization), a specialized agency of the United Nations (UNO), also plays an important role in the catalog of criteria.

At the moment, 142 shoreside excursions as well as 230 bike and pedelec tours carry the sustainability seal. This also includes offers such as kayak tours or fun types of sports such as stand-up paddling.

On all AIDA shore excursions it is very important to us that any packaging we bring along or any other waste we generate is disposed of on site in an environmentally friendly way. If this is not possible, our participants take the garbage back to the ship where it is appropriately separated and recycled or disposed of.

CO2 compensation

CO2 compensation

In March 2015, AIDA and the climate protection organization "atmosfair" joined forces to start a climate protection program that sets standards in the cruise industry. The program is focused on initiatives such as a direct reduction in CO 2 ship emissions and voluntary CO 2 compensation for cruises.

All AIDA guests can voluntarily book the CO2 compensation of their cruises at www.aida.de under MyAIDA. By 2020, we would like to see 20 percent of AIDA guests using CO 2 compensation to make a voluntary contribution to climate protection.

Through atmosfair climate protection projects, AIDA is also compensating CO 2 emissions from all employee business travel by plane or rental car.

The proceeds will go toward a biomass power plant in northern India, which produces green electricity from crop residues for 40,000 households, saves 30,000 tons of CO 2 annually, and contributes to the region’s development by offering new job opportunities and income sources for farmers.

AIDA Cruises also aims to work with atmosfair in a joint pilot project to test the opportunities of utilizing LNG (liquefied natural gas) to power cruise ships in the future, which would completely eliminate CO 2 emissions by using power to gas methods and wind or solar power. If successful, this could be the beginning of CO2-free cruises. AIDA Cruises promotes and supports the introduction of uniform standards and specifications for using LNG in the shipping industry.

Protection of animals and species

To preserve fauna and flora, AIDA Cruises is also committed to the protection of animals and species and makes its guests aware of this topic. For example: For reasons related to animal welfare, we do not offer any visits to dolphinariums or elephant rides, since most of these facilities do not provide humane treatment of animals. We have therefore decided to stop supporting these facilities. However as an exception, we do support a few select theme parks that are actively committed to species conservation and promoting the protection of animals through their educational and research work. These parks provide the animals with living conditions that exceed the minimum defined standards for animal welfare.

AIDA is a member of the Futouris e.V. initiative, which aims to work together with environmental organizations and researchers to review and improve how animal welfare standards are defined and adhered to. AIDA Cruises recommends that guests who are interested in whales and dolphins observe them in the wild, for example on a whale watching tour.

We support soft tourism and are continuing to expand our range of shore excursions. This is also why for many years we have been offering our guests excursions where they can see whales, dolphins, and other marine life in their natural habitats. We work with select providers who make sure that tourists will not disturb the animals.

We want our guests to have the opportunity to consciously experience the many different facets of sustainability – in everyday life on board and on shore excursions as well as during our informational events on culture and the environment. With our program – through what we offer and what we don’t – we want to inspire our guests to travel with greater awareness.

Training our travel agent partners

Training our travel agent partners

In addition to the actual vacation experience, the eco-friendliness of a planned trip is becoming a key booking factor for more and more people. AIDA Cruises thus provides our travel agency partners with transparent information about our commitment to the environment. We are also available to speak with them and answer any questions they have in order to thoroughly advise their customers. In 2015, sustainability was a key point on the agenda at 335 customer events for travel agencies and 182 trade fairs. We have also firmly integrated environmental protection into our office and field staff teams for our sales campaigns. In November 2015, we began the EXPIdition program, a multipart series of training workshops for travel agency employees, which included an online test with questions about the environment.

AIDA Friends of the Ocean e.V. (AIDA Freunde der Meere e.V.)

AIDA Friends of the Ocean (AIDA Freunde der Meere e.V.)

As a cruise company, conserving a pristine environment and maintaining clean oceans is a matter of principle for us. They are part of an unforgettable vacation experience that we also want to be able to offer our guests in the future. Many employees as well as guests support our efforts to protect this sensitive ecosystem and want to actively contribute to preserving it. But how and where can they get involved?

At the suggestion of AIDA employees, a committed team lead by Dr. Monika Griefahn, Chief Sustainability Officer at AIDA Cruises, decided to tackle this very question. The result: On March 12, 2013, the founding meeting for the AIDA Friends of the Ocean (“AIDA Freunde der Meere e.V.”) was held on board AIDAstella.

AIDA Friends of the Ocean operates as a non-profit and is managed separately from AIDA. The organization has set the goal of using various projects to promote the concept of environmental and marine conservation at both the national and international level.

According to information from the United Nation Environment Programme (UNEP), each year around 6.4 million tonnes of trash are dumped into the world’s oceans. According to Germany's Federal Environmental Agency there was 100 to 150 million tonnes of trash in the oceans in 2013 and plastics made up 60percent of it. About 70 percent of the trash settles on the ocean floor. AIDA Friends of the Ocean wants to do something to stop this. It cannot stand idly by and watch as more and more animals perish and the vital habitats of birds, fish, and other living creatures are destroyed.

The organization is focused on raising awareness of the threat posed to the ocean's fragile ecosystems and educating the public on appropriate initiatives to protect the maritime environment. AIDA Friends of the Ocean wants to get as many people as possible excited about the fascinating world of the ocean and thus increase conservation efforts and the willingness to protect our oceans and coastal landscapes over the long term. This should particularly be done through practical nature protection projects, but also through educational and PR work.

AIDA Freunde der Meere e.V.

In 2015, AIDA Friends of the Ocean participated in International Coastal Cleanup Day again and held coastal cleanup activities in Hamburg and Warnemünde. Furthermore, following the great success in the previous year, the association worked with the Tourism Center of Rostock & Warnemünde and the Mecklenburg Association of Baltic Sea Resorts e.V. again in 2015 in order to distribute beach ashtrays in Rostock/Warnemünde and all Baltic Sea resort areas along the coast of Mecklenburg. The objective was to raise environmental awareness of tourists and locals, and make it easier to properly dispose of cigarettes at the beach.

As of 2015, AIDA Friends of the Ocean is supported by honorary ambassadors who promote the protection of the oceans and represent the association at events, for example during campaigns for Climate Day 2015. The current ambassadors are Olaf and Jana Eichhorst, Stefanie and Peter Altweck, Thomas Höffler, Peggy Mokosch and Barbara Holzner.

Another important focus for AIDA Friends of the Ocean is its committed opposition to using microplastics. What many of us don't know: many toothpastes, exfoliating shower gels, and other everyday products contain small “plastic pearls” that are supposed to enhance the cleaning action. You can particularly tell if a product has microplastics when polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) are listed as ingredients on the packaging. These microplastics travel from bathroom drains right into our water sources, and the particles are not biodegradable. They endanger not only the environment, but also birds and fish which mistake them for plankton and then perish in misery. With the consumption of fish, microplastics also enter our food chain, thereby endangering human health as well. AIDA Friends of the Ocean wants to raise awareness about the impact of microplastics and encourage consumers to make conscious product decisions. All cleaning and cosmetic products on board AIDA ships are naturally free of microplastics.

The AIDA Friends of the Ocean organization is open to anybody who wants to be actively involved in protecting our oceans. Donations and memberships will help the organization continue to grow and promote its projects. We warmly welcome new members who wish to actively contribute their ideas and work on projects.

More information about AIDA Friends of the Ocean, membership applications, and contact details can be found at www.aida-freunde-der-meere.de .

News Release

Aida cruises presents the first tour operator service award.

For the first time, the cruise line AIDA Cruises has presented the "Tour Operator Service Award". As part of a large-scale survey, AIDA Cruises asked its guests what their favorite shore excursions had been in the 2018 summer season. Thousands of guests gave their feedback on excursions offered by 50 agency partners. Atlas Travel in Croatia won first place, followed by Iceland Travel in Iceland ( Akureyri, Isafjördur, Seydisfjördur, Reykjavik) and Estonian Holidays in Tallinn, Estonia.

To determine the winner, several thousands of guest comments were evaluated using a feedback system on board between May and September 2018. In addition to quality and guest satisfaction, the recommendation rate was also an important criterion in selecting the winners.

At the end of October 2018, Mirna Perkic and Ru ž ica Glibota from Atlas Travel accepted the award on board AIDAblu from Dana Keller, Team Coordinator for the excursion program in Croatia at AIDA Cruises, and the ship's management with Captain Tönnies Kohrs and General Manager Steffen Haller. The agency was also pleased to receive an electric scooter for sustainable travel in the future.

The next Tour Operator Service Award will be presented in spring of 2019. From November 2018 to March 2019, all AIDA guests will again be asked for their opinion. This time, they can choose from shore excursion options offered by more than 100 agencies on the Canary Islands and Madeira, as well as cruise destinations in the Indian Ocean, Southeast Asia, the Caribbean, Arabian Gulf, and the Western Mediterranean.

AIDA Cruises currently offers over 6,000 different excursions at its worldwide destinations. The cruise line not only strives to provide unforgettable experiences for its guests but also to contribute to environmental protection and to promote cultural heritage and further development at its cruise destinations.

Back in September 2012, AIDA Cruises launched a joint project with the sustainability initiative Futouris e.V. to establish standardized criteria for sustainable shore excursions. The goal of this project was to create a transparent basis for comparing the sustainability of individual excursion offers and to base the evaluation on measurable and scientific criteria.

More than 1,000 AIDA Cruises shore excursions (incl. bike and Pedelec tours) bear the sustainable tree symbol.

More information on AIDA Cruises' diverse cruise program can be obtained at travel agencies, by phoning the AIDA Customer Center at +49 (0) 381/20 27 07 07, or online at www.aida.de .

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

<< Previous page

Pages:  379-406

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.

Keywords: Tuva, Early Iron Age, early Scythian period, Aldy-Bel culture, barrow, burial in the coffin, mummy, full genome sequencing, aDNA

Electric Bicycles for AIDA Guests

aida pedelec tour

June 13, 2013 /3BL Media/ - Bike with electric drive are all the rage - in Germany alone, around 380,000 Pedelecs were sold last year, according to the General German Bicycle Club (ADFC). The guests on the cruises of AIDA can look forward to the fun with built-in tailwind. As of now, the extensive range will be extended to bicycle trips around the pedelec tours on the ships Aida Bella, AIDAblu, Aida Diva, Aida Luna, AIDAmar, AIDAsol and Aida Stella. So in almost every port of call is an excursion by motorized bicycles is offered. Anyone who thinks that the pedelec only what people comfortable or older generations, is mistaken. The bikes have long since passed her "grandma" image: "Our AIDA Pedelecs not only look stylish, but rather have real power. Especially with the tours with slope one can now sit relaxed in the saddle. And the best part: The Pedelecs are an environmentally friendly alternative to car hire locally, "explains Martin Dubois, bikers on Aida Luna. The bike feeling remains, because the electric motor is supported only when you step into the pedals. The pedelec takes wide tours and steep climbs its horrors. On all ten cruise ships of the AIDA fleet there is a wide range of excursions, where guests can experience the ports of call from the bike's perspective. Every ship shall be experienced biking guides on board who serve as trailheads travel companion, the bike rides.
