FCTG SA opens a new store in popular Mall of Africa

JOHANNESBURG, 2 NOVEMBER 2021 – The Flight Centre Travel Group (FCTG) South Africa has become the first of the Flight Centre Travel Group globally to open a new retail store since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. The new Flight Centre store opened in the Mall of Africa on 01 November 2021 – the only travel agency in the shopping centre.

“We have seen incredible pent-up demand for travel in recent weeks and months as the world begins to open up once more,” says Bianca Mazur , Flight Centre General Manager.   “Flight Centre South Africa is now the first Flight Centre globally to open a new bricks and mortar store since the start of the pandemic, so this is a really exciting time for us.” “While we did have a store in Mall of Africa prior to the pandemic, the location wasn’t the best. We’re now opening a brand-new store in the centre in a fantastic location, opposite the new Checkers. We’ll also be the only travel agency in the mall to date so are looking forward to servicing the needs of the many customers that frequent the 300 retail shops in this award-winning space.”

“There’s actually never been a better time to open a new bricks and mortar store,” says Mazur. “We have been completely inundated with enquiries and bookings since the UK opened to South Africa a few weeks ago and we’ve seen this pent-up demand for travel growing substantially in recent months as more countries have opened to us, including South African bestsellers such as Mauritius and Thailand. “Travel remains highly complex, more so than it’s ever been before,” emphasizes Mazur. “Travellers are realizing the necessity of consulting ASATA accredited travel experts when it comes to any travel. We’ve also observed that many customers prefer face to face, in-person interactions with a Travel Expert than interacting or booking online.” The new Mall of Africa store will be staffed by five highly experienced travel consultants with around 38 years of combined travel experience between them.

Alison is by far the best travel rep i have worked with and i travel a lot. alison first booked our trip for three couples to south africa, botswana and zimbabwe for november 2020. due to covid she had to rebook us twice in 2021 and 2022. we then had a conflict with our trip dates and she rebooked us for a fourth time. each time she rebooked she was able to secure us dates in the same lodges (which were very small) in the same order (which was important to us). each time she was professional, friendly, very patient and overly willing to help us get our trip rebooked. in addition, we peppered her with many questions over the many months before our trip which she gladly answered very quickly. if she didn't know the answer she researched it and got us the answer. the trip she planned for us was truly the trip of a lifetime. every detail was taken care of and the places she booked for us were amazing. not only the accommodations but the people. she took care of checking us in for our flights and checking in with us throughout our trip to make sure everything was going well. i cannot recommend alison and africa tailormade more highly. if you are going to africa you must contact alison.

Israel considered its options after Iran’s attack

Israel showed signs that it would not immediately retaliate for the hundreds of exploding drones and missiles that Iran fired at it over the weekend, nearly all of which Israel and its allies intercepted.

Israel’s war cabinet met yesterday without deciding when or how to respond to the assault. But officials said they would relax restrictions on large gatherings and educational activities, a possible indication that they did not expect an immediate escalation.

Iran’s attack, in retaliation for an Israeli strike that killed seven Iranian military commanders in Syria, represented a moment of great risk, because it was the first time it had directly struck Israel in the two nations’ long shadow war. But it caused little damage, largely because Iran had telegraphed its intentions well in advance.

“The matter can be deemed concluded,” Iran’s mission to the U.N. said in a statement yesterday. “However, should the Israeli regime make another mistake, Iran’s response will be considerably more severe.”

International response: President Biden reached out to Israel to discourage further escalation, fearing a wider war in the Middle East; Group of 7 leaders condemned Iran’s attack , but also urged restraint.

In Gaza, three people said Israeli troops fired at a crowd of people trying to return to their homes in the enclave’s north. The Palestinian Authority’s news agency said five people were killed, but the circumstances of the deaths could not be confirmed independently, and the Israeli military did not immediately respond to questions about the incident.

The first criminal trial of a former U.S. president begins

Jury selection begins today in Donald Trump’s Manhattan criminal trial , a first for an American ex-president.

Manhattan prosecutors, who have accused Trump of falsifying records to cover up a sex scandal, have advantages that include insider witnesses and a jury pool drawn from one of the most liberal counties in the U.S. Mr. Trump and some aides and lawyers privately concede that the jury is unlikely to acquit him outright, according to people with knowledge of the discussions.

So Trump is seeking to write his own reality, telling a story that he believes could pave his return to the White House in November. He has framed his failed efforts to delay the case as evidence that he cannot receive a fair trial, casting himself as a political martyr under attack from the prosecution and the judge.

A stabbing rampage shocked Australia

One of the deadliest mass killings in Australia’s recent history has left many asking how such a thing could happen in a country known for its relative safety.

A knife-wielding man at a mall in a Sydney suburb stabbed nearly 20 people, including a 9-month-old girl. Six people died, including the baby’s mother. The attacker — whose motives remained unclear — was shot and killed by a police officer, the authorities said.

“These things don’t happen in Australia,” said Kristie Spong, 54, who had been to the mall with her daughter a few days earlier and returned Sunday to lay flowers at a memorial.

Sydney police say 7 dead after shopping mall stabbings

Police say six people have been stabbed to death by an attacker at a Sydney shopping center before he was shot dead by police. Hundreds of people were evacuated from the premises following the attacks.

Australian police say six people have been killed in stabbing attacks at a Sydney shopping mall, with the suspected attacker also shot dead by police.

Five of the victims died at the scene, and one died later in hospital, police said.

Five of those killed were women, and the sixth fatality a man, they said.

The incidents occurred at the Westfield Bondi Junction shopping complex, with hundreds told to evacuate the area.

What do we know so far?

A single person began stabbing people in the mall, attacking nine people, before a police inspector shot him, Assistant Police Commissioner Anthony Cooke told reporters.

Cooke said the senior officer was alone when she confronted the suspect and that by her actions, she had saved several lives. He said the suspect had been shot after he turned and raised a knife at the policewoman.

He said the suspect in the attack is believed to have acted alone, after initial reports suggested there might have been two perpetrators.

Police said the attacker is believed to have been a 40-year-old man who was known to authorities and that if this was true, the motivation for the attack would not be terrorism.

An ambulance service spokesperson told Reuters news agency that eight people, including a child — later reported to be a nine-month-old baby — had been taken to hospital with injuries. Broadcaster ABC said some of the wounded are in critical condition.

Emergency services were called to the mall just before 4 p.m. (0600 GMT) following the reports of the stabbings, police in the state of New South Wales said in a statement.

Eyewitness accounts of Sydney mall attack

Scenes of chaos.

Several social media posts showed crowds fleeing the mall and police cars and emergency services rushing to the area. Security camera footage broadcast by local media showed a man wearing an Australian rugby league jersey running around the shopping centre with a large knife.

Australia is a country with a relatively low rate of violent crime and tight weapons laws, and this incident has caused great public shock.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said that "the devastating scenes of Bondi Junction are beyond words or understanding." 

He also praised the bravery of strangers who helped each other and the woman police inspector who confronted the knife-wielding attacker.

"She is certainly a hero. There is no doubt that she saved lives through her action," Albanese said. 

Britain's King Charles III, who is also the head of state of Australia, said that he and his wife Queen Camilla were "horrified" by the "senseless" stabbings.

"While details of these shocking circumstances are still emerging, our thoughts are also with those who were involved in the response, and we give thanks for the bravery of the first responders and emergency services," he said.

Meanwhile, Pope Francis said he was "deeply saddened" by the attack.
