  • Allow a day or two before and after your tour for your travel time to New Zealand, as well as to get over the jet lag and rest before hitting the road
  • Pack light , but remember the necessities! Not only do you not want to be the person that everyone has to make room for, but you’ll especially want to remember to pack medication or any extra medication you might need – see 15 Essentials to Pack for New Zealand for tips
  • Take it easy – the great thing about New Zealand tours for seniors is that they are slow-paced and allow for free time, but don’t try to fill up every second. Take the time to rest and recuperate when you can

New Zealand for Seniors

Roy Orbison wasn’t thinking about New Zealand seniors’ tours when he wrote “You Got It” but he could just as well have been because New Zealand really does have everything.

The relatively compact size of the country, ease of getting around, variety of landscapes and experiences, and laid-back approach to life make New Zealand an extremely popular choice for seniors.

Whether you’re in to food, wine, golf, beaches, horticulture, bird-watching, walking, railways, cruises, culture or history, with more variety than almost any other country, you’ll find what you’re looking for in New Zealand. In fact, “anything you want, anything at all, you got it!”

Whether you’re making a trip to celebrate a retirement, a 60 th or 70 th birthday, or simply because you’ve always wanted to, New Zealand is an incredible destination.

Here at Silver Fern Holidays we have some wonderful options for senior travel in New Zealand in the form of escorted tours. Of course, we mean ‘senior’ in the most modern sense; us older generations are younger than ever and just because we’re no longer in our youth, it doesn’t mean we don’t still yearn to travel and see the world. So let us explain how we can make your dream come true.

New Zealand Seniors Tours

Our unique Small Group Tours offer the ideal New Zealand vacation for seniors.

With a smaller group of fellow travellers, it’s easier to get to know everyone, and we do all we can to ensure you’re on board with like-minded people who will likely become good friends by the end of the trip. This is group travel at its most comfortable and welcoming. This enables us to cater for all interests, whether they are skiing down mountains or drinking fantastic new wines on the scenic South island, or exploring the glittering bays and coves of the North island– no two New Zealand tours for seniors are ever the same!

Our friendly driver-guides and local guides are there to show you the best of New Zealand and make sure you have the best time doing it. Taking a more informal approach than your typical ‘coach tours’, you’ll find they are incredibly passionate and knowledgeable about their country and have the highest standards of safety and professionalism. And they’ll share plenty of laughs along the way too.

A smaller cohort means you still get to visit all of the sights, but in a more personal, tailored, fashion and we keep the itinerary flexible, so you have much more of an input into your trip. A unique blend of tour and tailor-made itinerary with a superb selection of accommodation along the way, our Small Group Tours are the most versatile coach tours for seniors New Zealand has to offer.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of accommodation do we stay in.

Having a good night's rest after a day out touring is very important so we personally choose all of our accommodation. Generally, four star accommodation when available - with all the comforts you need for a relaxed night.

I have some dietary requirements?

Please just let us know in advance and we will sort everything for you. Chefs are used to all sorts now when it comes to diet so as long as we know - we’ll have you covered.

How about travel insurance?

We strongly recommend taking out travel insurance as soon as you book your trip. It just puts your mind at ease. Remember to make sure you are covered for and loss of personal possessions, sickness, accidents or travel delays. Feel free to ask us for any tips to make this quick and easy for you.

Can you collect me from my door?

Yes, it would be our pleasure. We can arrange for you to be picked up and returned to your front door at the conclusion of any tour.

What types of transport do we use?

Our buses are quality touring coaches that are very comfortable and fully air conditioned. They range in size from 19-28 seats ensuring that we can easily access all those secret spots off the beaten track. All vehicles are regularly serviced as your safety is our priority.

Coaches and luggage trailers are always locked and secure but we recommended you take any valuables with you when staying overnight.

What happens if I have to cancel?

Cancellation charges do apply so again we recommend travel insurance. Our cancellation policy is clearly outlined for each tour so make sure you cast your eye over it and please feel free to ask any questions.

How active are your tours?

We are called Take it Easy for a reason as we like to do just that. Do as much or as little as you like - after all it's your holiday! However, there is walking and various activities on each tour that require various levels of fitness. Please check with us if you are unsure about anything and relax knowing that there's always another option for you if you would rather miss out on any activity. We always have a back up plan.

Can I earn Air New Zealanad airpoints on my flights?

Yes, you can earn airpoints with Take It Easy Tours when we are using Air New Zealand flights. All you need to do is get in contact with us and let us know your airpoints number for each time you wish to earn points.

New Zealand tours for seniorsïżŒ

Looking at Mount Cook on tour, small group New Zealand

You are never too old to travel New Zealand. Unleash your inner traveller with our amazing New Zealand tours for seniors.

We’ll depart Queenstown early to drive over the Lindis Pass and through the Mackenzie Country, past the vivid blue waters of Lake Pukaki on the way to our amazing stop at the base of New Zealand’s highest mountain, Aoraki/Mt Cook. We’ve made this drive sound great but honestly - we reckon it’s one of the most stunning days you’ll have in the whole of NZ. We arrive in the early afternoon with time to do an optional experience like a boat tour on a glacial lake surrounded by snow capped alps (sounds epic? It is.) Alternatively we can check out the Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Centre or do one of the many great short walks in the park. We would be remiss if we didn’t recommend the Hooker Valley track (weather dependent) which in our opinion is in the top 3 day walks in NZ. If it’s a clear night, head outside to experience one of the best stargazing spots in the country.

New Zealand is a beautiful country with plenty of sights to see and experiences to enjoy, and we know you want to enjoy it any every age. How to Choose a New Zealand Tour

Choosing a travel tour requires careful consideration to ensure that it aligns with your interests, preferences, and physical capabilities.

Research Tour Operators

Start by researching reputable tour operators that specialize in tours for mature travelers. Look for companies with a track record of positive reviews, responsible travel practices, and experienced local guides.

Tour Itinerary

Review the tour itinerary in detail. Ensure it covers the destinations and experiences you are interested in, whether it’s cultural immersion, scenic beauty, wildlife encounters, or a combination of activities.

Consider the group size. Smaller groups often provide a more personalized experience and allow for meaningful interactions with fellow travelers and guides.

Physical Demands

Assess the physical demands of the tour. Some tours may involve extensive walking or more adventurous activities, so choose one that matches your fitness level and preferences.

Inclusions and Exclusions

Check what is included in the tour package, such as accommodations, meals, activities, and transportation. Compare the value offered by different tour companies.

Flexibility

Look for tours that offer a balance between structured activities and free time, allowing you to explore on your own or take a break when needed.

Travel Style

Identify the travel style that suits you best. It could be a leisurely-paced tour, an adventure-focused one, or a blend of both.

Travel Insurance

Ensure that you have appropriate travel insurance that covers your age and the activities included in the tour.

Reviews and Recommendations

Read reviews and testimonials from other travelers who have taken the tour to get a better understanding of their experiences and satisfaction levels.

How to Prepare for a New Zealand Tour

Obtain necessary documents.

Ensure you have a valid passport with at least six months of validity from your planned departure date. Depending on your nationality, you may also need to apply for a visa before traveling to New Zealand.

Check Health and Vaccination Requirements

Consult your doctor or a travel health clinic to ensure you are up-to-date with vaccinations and to get advice on any specific health precautions for New Zealand.

Pack Appropriately

Pack comfortable and weather-appropriate clothing, including layers for varying temperatures. Don’t forget essentials like a hat, sunscreen, sturdy walking shoes, and any specialized gear required for specific activities.

Learn about the Culture

Familiarize yourself with New Zealand’s customs, traditions, and etiquette to show respect for the local culture.

Plan for Free Time

If your tour includes free time, research activities or places of interest you’d like to explore during those periods.

Have you been to New Zealand? Are you planning a trip to New Zealand? Which cities or areas would you like to visit and why? Tell us about it in the comments below.

guest

I very much enjoyed the shout out to New Zealand, it’s been on my list for some time. However, I would have appreciated it even more if you could mention the tours that have no single supplement. I’m sure I’m not the only one who struggles to find group tours that are affordable as a newly single woman.

Sue

I live in Australia and have visited NZ several times. It’s a beautiful place and well worth seeing. Another way of traveling is on a cruise and there are several cruise companies that sail from Sydney or you can join one in Auckland. My husband and I traveled with Princess Cruises on a Christmas cruise a few years ago. It’s a perfect way to see both islands as they usually travel around the circumference calling in at most of the cities, where you can disembark and go on excursions to the mountains, lakes and wineries. The Maori culture is very interesting and the people are very welcoming. Of course the scenery is spectacular and the wineries and Te Papa museum in Wellington well worth a visit. Just do it
you won’t be disappointed.

Janne Perry

Thank you for promoting our lovely little country 😊 I’m in New Zealand and all of the tours above look fabulous! We’re a pretty friendly bunch and it’s a safe place for travellers. Lovely place for foodies to visit too! The weather can be very much ‘four seasons in one day’ so packing for layering is a good suggestion. Bring the swimsuit regardless of season as there are hot springs in many places and a LOT of coastline! Come on over

Liz Robertson

I live in New Zealand too. I agree with Janne, please come and visit. It might be a long way for many, but you won’t be disappointed in any way. I have travelled the world and now I’m older I’m seeing more of my own beautiful country and just amazed at our diverse and gorgeous scenery. There’s something for everyone here, the pace is slower than many places and even our biggest cities are smaller than most large cities in the world. Febuary/March will give you the best summer and July/August will give you a mild winter in most place, except for our winter wonderland Skiing areas.

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip as a senior.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travellers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises). However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travellers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Learn more about Intrepid's COVID-19 policy

Who are Intrepid travellers?

Intrepid adventures are for travellers with a yearning to get off the beaten track. Whether you're travelling solo, with a group of friends, or are aged 18 or 70, there is an Intrepid adventure to suit your interests and comfort level. Each Intrepid adventure has a physical and cultural grading to help you decide if the trip is right for you. No special skills are required for most adventures, just a sense of adventure and a curiosity about the world. Even on our camping adventures no previous experience is required; our tents are easy to set up, even for first-time campers.

Are there age restrictions on your trips?

For the majority of our trips the minimum age is 15. An adult must accompany all children under the age of 18. Our Overland Adventures have a minimum age of 18. Younger children can join us on our Family trips and Short Break Adventures, but check each trip for its minimum age, which is located on the trip’s overview page on the website. Most of our trips don’t have a maximum age limit, but a Self-Assessment Form is required for all passengers 70 years and over.

How many people will be on my trip?

Good things come in small packages, which is why we keep our group sizes down. This means we’re small enough to remain flexible as we thread our way through communities without intimidating the locals. On most of our trips you’ll be part of an intimate group of 12-16 people, though our group sizes are on average 10 people. Our Overland trips are in purpose-built vehicles that can carry up to 24 travellers. Group sizes are displayed on each trip’s overview page on our website.

I’m travelling alone – is that OK?

This is the beauty of the Intrepid style of travel: many of our travellers join because they are travelling solo and want to meet and share experiences with like-minded people.

Learn more about solo travel

I have a disability – can I join an Intrepid trip?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. We ask that you carefully consider whether you are physically and mentally able to complete the itinerary you have chosen, recognising that on many trips you will be required to carry your own bags and use public transport.

Where we can we will make reasonable adjustments to the operation of our trips to facilitate the requirements of disabled travellers – such as booking ground floor accommodation, or having our leaders communicate important directions in writing as well as verbally. Many travellers with disabilities have been able to enjoy our trips by travelling with a friend or companion who can assist with specific needs. If joining a group trip is not practical we may be able to provide you with a private departure. Please contact our sales team for further information on any of our itineraries.

Learn more about accessible travel with Intrepid

Do I need to buy travel insurance?

Travel insurance is compulsory on all our trips if you’re travelling internationally. Minimum coverage may differ from trip to trip, so make sure you check the Travel Insurance section in your Essential Trip Information. You will not be permitted to join the group until your leader has sighted your insurance policy number and the insurance company's 24-hour emergency contact number – it’s really important there are no barriers to getting emergency assistance for you.

Will I have my own room?

It's your call. Rooming on our trips is organised on a twin-share basis, but most of our trips also have the option to pay an extra fee for your own room. Just let us know at the time of booking and we'll arrange it for you.

For twin-share rooms, we pair up solo travellers with another traveller of the same gender as per the gender marker on each of their passports. As a responsible tour operator, we strive to create a safe and inclusive environment for everyone. In the case that your gender identity differs from what's indicated on your passport, please contact us so that we can discuss rooming options with you.

On a small selection of itineraries some accommodations are booked on an open-gender, multi-share basis. In those instances it will clearly be stated in your Essential Trip Information.

How does group time work?

Whether you’re travelling alone or with a partner, our trips have a set itinerary. But within that there’s time set aside for your own exploration (if you want to – no pressure). Depending on how you're feeling, you may want to have some downtime, ask your guide for a few tips then head out alone, or hang out with the group and see where the day takes you.

What makes a small group tour better than a coach tour?

The main difference between a small group tour and a coach tour is the size of the group; our tours have 10 travellers each (on average) while coaches can hold up to 60 people. This means that you'll never have to vie for your leader's attention on a small group tour because you'll automatically have it.

What people love about New Zealand South Island Tours for Seniors

Great tour! We got to see so many places in such a short amount of time, and I had a great time. Made some friends during the whole time! Will be heading to see the North Island next year! I’m already looking forward to exploring! ??
Although Rod, the driver was very nice I felt that Intrepid had not organised the tour as well as previous Intrepid tours I have done. It was very overpriced for what was provided. The van had a broken seat belt attachment with a sharp edge which ruined a down jacket I had bought for the trip. I have asked Intrepid about it but received no reply.
I thoroughly enjoyed my tour. The guide, Isobel, paid very good attention to details and the comfort of her tourists.I felt safe and secure in the bus as Mark's driving was very competent and Isobel was delightful, patient and full of fun, a real people person. She and Mark worked well together, meal times, departure times and other important information was provided well in advance. Good provision was made for frequent stops to allow for toilet breaks and the purchase of refreshments. I liked their attention to time keeping. For me, everything worked smoothly which made the tour relaxed and stress free. I would highly recommend Isobel and Mark.

Small Group Tour of New Zealand's North island

Odyssey offers easy, convenient, and relaxed escorted small group tours across New Zealand. We explore the North island of New Zealand's fairy-tale natural beauty, and its World Heritage Sites, and world famous cities, all with some truly spectacular scenery along the way. This and more is all waiting to be explored on one of Odyssey’s small group tours of New Zealand designed for the senior traveller, and led by experienced, and enthusiastic like minded people.

Odyssey Traveller is pleased to introduce our new small group tour of New Zealand, focusing on the beautiful North Island. Our tour is for up to 15 people, typically mature and senior travellers joining as a couple or as solo traveller. This program will guide travellers through the history, Maori culture, and landscapes of the North Island of New Zealand. Our itinerary gets off the beaten track, following the east coast of the North Island from Auckland to Wellington.

For many visitors, the South Island gets all the attention, with the big tourist draws of Franz Josef Glacier, Milford Sound , Queenstown and historic Christchurch . But dig deeper and you'll find that New Zealand's North Island has as much to offer, including the beautiful Bay of Islands , Poor Knights Island, White Island, and Waiheke Island, the bird sancturary of Tiritiri Matangi , the Art Deco of Hawke's Bay , alpine Tongariro , and the glow worm caves in the Waitomo Caves complex.

The arrival of Europeans - mostly British settlers - in New Zealand set in motion a startling and ultimately largely successful co-existence with the Maori people, that will be the focus of this tour of New Zealand.

Both Maori traditional owners and new settlers had to come to terms with the fiercely disparate environments and climates found through New Zealand, from the subtropical north to the alpine south. This is the route we will follow on this tour, heading from Auckland on a journey through the Coromandel Peninsula , then tracking south through the Bay of Plenty to Tairawhitu (The East Cape), rich in Maori culture and travel experiences. From Gisborne through Hawkes Bay and the Wairarapa , grape vines dominate the landscape. Our road trip finishes in Wellington , New Zealand's capital city.

On our small group tour of New Zealand:

New Zealand (Maori: Aotearoa) is an island country with a total land area of 268,000 square kilometres (103,500 sq mi) in the southwestern Pacific Ocean. It is one of the most southernmost countries in the world, about 2,000 kilometres (1,200 mi) east of Australia. The country has two main islands: the North Island (Te Ika-a-Māui) and the South Island (Te Waipounamu), and about 600 smaller islands.

Our 13-day small group tour of New Zealand's North Island is the best guided tour of the island's east coast, designed especially for mature and senior travellers. In Auckland , you join your tour guide and after a welcome dinner, the adventure begins the following morning with a trip on the fast ferry, past the island of Waiheke , to the town of Coromandel. From here, we are collected in our coach and our guided tour begins.

This small group tour will be accompanied by an Odyssey tour guide and are joined by expert local guides who will impart their knowledge about the places we will visit. Odyssey conducts educational tours designed for small groups of mature and senior travellers, focusing on history, culture, wildlife and other areas of particular interest where the trip is taking place. A small group tour is typically between 6 to 12 people. The cost of an Odyssey Traveller guided tour is inclusive of all entrances (unless otherwise indicated), tipping, and majority of the meals throughout the trip.

This particular tour has periods of free time built into the itinerary, allowing you explore each destination at your own pace, and choose from a variety of available activities. This way, we make sure that there is something to enjoy for every kind of traveller.

She was built for Doctor W.Frothingham Roach, a keen racer who named her Magnet, hidden during WW2 to escape being taken by the British Admiralty for coastal patrol work. She turned up in the 60s in Canada under the name of Huegenot and then left for New Zealand about 1975. This cruise allows us to trim the sails and feel the old schooner heeling with the wind. Weather permitting, head for a sheltered bay, which you will have to yourselves. Once there, you have options to swim ashore in the crystal-clear water followed by a walk on the flawless beach or take a short jaunt through the bush to a stunning waterfall and enjoy a dip in the freshwater pool. Follow by a guided tour and interactive cultural workshops, the experience in Mataatua Wharenui concludes with Hiko: Legends Carved in Light. Marvel at the intricacy of the carved representations of the great ancestors of Ngāti Awa as two of the most famous traditions of our tribe are brought to life before your eyes during this award-winning Mataatua visitor experience. We are currently in discussions to see what we can create with local tribal elders.

During the tour, you’ll have the opportunity to observe and interact with the Stingrays, Eagle Rays, Kingfish, and other reef dwellers under the guidance. The guides will provide information about the local inhabitants who live on the reef.

Day 8: Gisborne to Napier

Accommodation: The County Hotel - Napier, or similar

In the morning we have a relaxed three hour drive to Napier, after which we can check in to our hotel and have a free afternoon to walk around the centre. There are lots of places to eat, some nice antique shops and lots of art deco architecture. After spending the last few days “on a mission” this gives us a chance to be independent for a while. Originally a gentleman farmer’s region, and now supporting a very successful Chardonnay and Bordeaux blends wine growing industry, this is a great place to enjoy the softer and more artistic aspects of New Zealand. The art deco town of Napier and local artists are also enjoyable. In 1931, when an earthquake ravaged Napier, enlightened locals rebuilt the centre entirely in Art Deco style. I’m told every type of art deco feature is incorporated here. This has contributed to the light, upbeat and stylish feeling of this city – if you’re into that sort of thing, definitely worth a look. This is a heavyweight winemaking area, with superb wines and excellent practices in existence. If you love chardonnays, merlots, cabernets and now syrahs – then this is a wonderfully relaxed and sophisticated place to do so.

Day 9: Napier- Martinborough

Today is a day of choices. If you wish we can book you on one of a number of cycle routes through vineyards, or you can be left to your own devices, or you can agree on places to visit with your guide.

Day 10: Napier to Taupo

Accommodation: Hilton Lake Taupo, or similar

It’s a two hour run over the mountains across to Taupo. On the way there we will be deviating across beautiful private Lochinver Station. There we will meet with today’s guide, Tom Loughlin, who will introduce us to the Maori relationship with food and the outdoors. After that, it’s a quick hour into Taupo and a wide range of restaurant choices.

Tom Loughlin is an experienced Maori chef, outdoorsman, and search and rescue specialist (tracker). Tom is passionate about sharing the magic of the New Zealand bush with his guests, combining wonderful Maori/Irish humour with a deep knowledge about Maori relationships with the land. He manages a 5,000 acre block of Maori land up in the Kaimanawa Ranges, an hour outside Taupo, and takes guests as well as Maori groups out there to hunt, gather, cultivate, prepare, cook, and hike. To find out more about the day with Tom, click on our E Book .

Day 11: Taupo - Wellington

Accommodation: Ramada by Wyndham - Wellington, or similar

We’ll be visiting Delani Brown, acclaimed master carver, probably in his workshop. And spending a bit more time with Tom, from yesterday, as we check out a few local, under the radar, places. Maori Creations – A Day with a Carver. In the Maori world, the carver is second only to the chief in a tribe. This is because the carver is the keeper of history and traditions. Maori had no alphabet when Europeans arrived yet were capable of reciting their genealogy dozens of generations back. This knowledge was kept in carvings and weavings, and blended with spiritual knowledge. A day with Delani Brown, acknowledged Master Carver, will give you a gentle introduction into this world through his eyes.

After the Carver experience, drive from Taupo to Wellington (drive time 4 hours 50 minutes) with few stops on the way.

Day 12: Wellington

This morning a private guide will pick you up from your accommodation to experience a half-day Wellington walking tour. Today you will be visiting various historic points like Pukeahu National War Memorial Park, Old Bank Arcade and then a short walk-up to Cable Car. Back to Lambton Quay and an easy stroll to Parliamentary precinct via Stout Street. After a short coffee break, walk along waterfront towards Te Papa with a view to lunch at Karaka Cafe (Te Whare Waka). A group Farewell dinner has been organised for the evening. Meet your driver/ guide at the reception in the evening.

Day 13: Wellington

This small group tour of New Zealand journey down the East coast of the north Island concludes after breakfast.

History and traditions of the maoris of the west coast, north island of new zealand prior to 1840.

Stephenson Percy Smith

Excerpt from History and Traditions of the Maoris of the West Coast, North Island of New Zealand Prior to 1840

This history is much longer than perhaps suits the ordinary reader indeed, it is over a hundred pages more than was originally contemplated. But the amount of information collected will prove of interest to those living in the localities mentioned in after times; and it could never be collected again, for the old men who gave it have now passed on to Te Hono-i-wairua.

To others than members of the Polynesian Society it is right to say that the book has been published in the Society's Journal by instalments - it would otherwise never have appeared on account of the expense - and that the number of maps in it is due to the liberality of the Government, who had them drawn and printed at their expense.

New Zealand: People, Places and Events that Shaped the History of New Zealand

James Boyle

New Zealand is a country that has forever been admired for its beautiful landscapes – a wilderness that barely seems to be touched by humans. The populated areas are surrounded by forests, plains, rocky mountains – even beaches. All of this gives New Zealand that heavenly vibe. However, the place we admire today has been heavily affected by its history. People who wanted to farm the land versus people who wanted to keep the land the way it is. A land that, despite the wars it had been through, has managed to hang on to its beauty. Packed with colonization, war and expansion, the history of New Zealand is something everyone should know and study in this day and age.

The Penguin History of New Zealand

Michael King

New Zealand was the last country in the world to be discovered and settled by humankind. It was also the first to introduce full democracy. Between those events, and in the century that followed, the movements and conflicts of human history have been played out more intensively and more rapidly in New Zealand than anywhere else on Earth.

The Penguin History of New Zealand tells that story in all its colour and drama. The narrative that emerges is an inclusive one about men and women, Maori and Pakeha. It shows that British motives in colonising New Zealand were essentially humane; and that Maori, far from being passive victims of a 'fatal impact', coped heroically with colonisation and survived by selectively accepting and adapting what Western technology and culture had to offer.

Pounamu Pounamu

Witi Ihimaera

Pounamu Pounamu is classic Ihimaera. First published om 1972, it was immediately endorsed by Maori and Pakeha alike for its original stories that showed how important Maori identity is for all New Zealanders. As Katherine Mansfield did in her first collection In a German Pension (1911), and Janet Frame in The Lagoon (1951), Witi Ihimaera explores in Pounamu Pounamu what it is like to be a New Zealander - but from a Maori perspective. The seeds of Ihimaera's later works are first introduced in this ground-breaking collection: The Whale Rider in his story 'The Whale', The Rope of Man in 'Tangi', and the character of Simeon form Bulibasha, King of the Gypsies in 'One Summer Morning'; and the themes of aroha (love), whanaungatanga (kinship) and manaakitanga (supporting each other), which are so intergral to Ihimaera's work.

What to see on the North Island of New Zealand?

While the South Island gets most of the attention thanks to Franz Josef Glacier, Milford Sound , Queenstown, Christchurch and more, the North Island has just as much to offer. You can learn about the volcanic and geothermal activity of the island and the Maori culture . Destinations worth a visit are the beautiful Bay of Islands and Cape Reinga up north with the Waitangi treaty grounds, Auckland and its volcanic islands, such as Waiheke Island and Rangitoto Island, Rotorua , Tongariro , the Waitomo glowworm caves, the Coromandel Peninsula , Bay of Plenty, Hawke’s Bay and Wellington .

Some of the main cities of the North Island are Auckland, Wellington, Hamilton, Tauranga, Napier , Rotorua, Hastings and Gisborne.

How Maui fished up the North Island?

Maui is a very important demigod in the Maori mythology. One day he overheard his four brothers that they wanted to leave him behind while going fishing. Maui made a fishhook from a magical ancestral jawbone and hid in the brothers’ canoe. When they were far out on the sea, Maui revealed himself, and threw the magical fishhook in the sea while chanting powerful incantations. The hook caught fast, and with the help of his brothers Maui brought the fish to the surface. He then begged them to wait until he had appeased to Tangaroa, the god of the sea, but the brothers did not listen and started to carve out pieces for themselves, forming the many mountains, valleys, lakes, rivers and coastlines of the island.

Crossing from the North Island to the South Island

If you want to cross from the North to the South Island, you either have to fly or take the ferry across the Cook Strait. The Interislander ferry operates between Wellington and Picton since 1962, and it takes about 3-3.5 hours to complete the crossing. The ferry route is one of the great journeys of New Zealand. On your journey, marvel at the beauty of Marlborough Sounds, the north coast of the South Island, which is made up of 1500 kilometres of sunken river valleys.

Which one is bigger, the North or the South Island?

The North Island’s area is 113,729 square kilometres (43,911 sq mi), making it the world’s 14 th largest island. With 150,437 square kilometres (58,084 sq mi), the South Island is the 12 th largest, and thus the bigger of the main islands of New Zealand.

North Island vs South Island population?

The population of New Zealand is around 4.9 million people, and according to the latest census, 76% lives on the North Island, equalling about 3.7 million people, while the South Island accounts for 23%, and the rest of the 600 islands for 1%. This means the North Island is the smaller but more populous island between the two main islands.

Initially Pakeha (European New Zealanders) settled on the South Island, and it wasn’t until 1911 that the population of the North Island overtook the South Island (56% vs 44%). The drift north still continues, with Auckland, the biggest economic hub of the country being the main driver of the change.

What do you need to bring to enjoy short walks in New Zealand?

If you are a winter sports fan, you should visit from June to the first week in October, Though temperatures in the mountains are cold; once you get away from there, the winters are relatively short and mild.

What to do in Auckland?

Auckland is a bustling urban city, that also offers beautiful lush native rainforests, golden sand beaches, rolling hills of wine country, hiking trails , picturesque country gardens, unspoilt forest and tranquil bays to explore. Auckland region is dotted with 48 volcanic cones which provide spectacular panoramic views of the city and harbour. Auckland is also famous for its shopping, nightlife and diverse range of cafes and restaurants. Don’t forget to go north to visit the amazing Bay of Islands . The Bay of Islands consists of 144 islands between Cape Brett and the Purerua Peninsula.

What to do in Wellington?

Wellington is a small and creative city with a mix of culture, history, nature and cuisine and surrounded by nature.

There are many museums, art galleries and theatre shows that make up the city’s pulsing cultural scene. If you’re into the outdoors, you can relax at Oriental Bay, Wellington’s golden-sand inner-city beach and delve into the Wellington has action-packed adventure activities like mountain biking and sea-water kayaking, as well as beautiful walks around the harbour and surrounding hills. Try the visually Ride the cable

New Zealand’s national museum, or Te Papa , as it’s colloquially known, means ‘our place’ and is one of the best interactive museums in the world.

What to do in Rotorua?

Rotorua is renowned for its geothermal activity and Maori culture . In Te Puia’s Whakarewarewa Valley, there are bubbling mud pools and the 30m-tall Pohutu Geyser, which erupts many times daily. It’s also home to a living Maori village and the New Zealand Maori Arts and Crafts Institute. Besides exploring the geothermal hot pools, you can:

  • Ride world-class mountain bike trails.
  • Swim in natural hot springs.
  • Walk among natural springs and river trails.

What do things cost in New Zealand?

You should plan to spend around NZ$185 ($129) per day on your vacation in New Zealand , which is the average daily price based on the expenses of other visitors. Past travellers have spent, on average, NZ$41 ($29) on meals for one day and NZ$27 ($19) on local transportation.

NEW ZEALAND TOURS FOR SENIORS - 23 DAY

Customizing dream trips to new zealand since 1988, new zealand tour for seniors - 23 days.

We designed this New Zealand Tour for Seniors for a lovely retired couple in their 70’s from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, who needed a New Zealand Travel Agentto help customize them a Seniors Travel Package.

The couple were open to a fully escorted coach tour but preferred more freedom to have their travel adventure handcrafted for them instead of being part of a seniors travel group tour.

We created this bespoke itinerary around travel for seniors and their wants and needs, considering that after much discussion, they wanted a combination of self-drive but not being on the road every day and still joining other small group tours for a day trip as needed.

Our New Zealand Specialists curated this itinerary by asking many questions about their fitness levels, interests, and even if they were early risers of night owls to make sure their start to the day was made easy.

This example self-drive tour encompasses both the North and South Island of New Zealand. Some of the many highlights included are a Maori Hangi Dinner, a wonderful New Zealand Farmstay with a local family, and a majestic overnight cruise on Doubtful Sound .

While this tour package was created for Seniors, this itinerary can be tweaked and tailor-made for anyone.

We are not only a Seniors Travel Agency; we are South Pacific Travel Specialists for everyone, whether on your honeymoon, an anniversary, a family vacation, single or solo traveler, or crossing one off the bucket list.

That is the beauty of having a bespoke itinerary designed and not a cookie-cutter pre-packaged itinerary! It is all designed just for you!

If you are interested in a fully guided group tour or joining a bus tour, we can certainly assist you with these – we have many we can offer around your wants, needs, time restrictions, and budget.

Our clientele is located all across The USA and Canada!

Prices are not listed on this itinerary as our New Zealand Travel Agents customize for each client’s wants and needs.

Contact your New Zealand Travel Agents for more information.
