Things to Do

Where to stay, how to get there, tips for your visit, kaziranga national park.

Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985, Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve is renowned for having the largest population in the world of the prehistoric-looking one-horned rhinoceros. In fact, two-thirds of all one-horned rhinos in the world can be found inside the national park. Kaziranga is located in the state of Assam in the northeast region of India , so it's quite a distance from the usual Indian tourist routes and an ideal destination for adventurous travelers . It's nestled in the foothills of the Eastern Himalayas, an area that is renowned for its unique biodiversity and untouched jungle paradise.

Reserve a jeep and head out on a safari around Kaziranga. Most visitors come to see the one-horned rhinoceros, which thrive in the swampy grasslands the cover many parts of the park. However, there are also all kinds of other animals to see here. Since tigers do reside in the park, it is officially considered a tiger reserve, although sightings are rare. More common wildlife you'll come across include wild elephants, buffaloes, gaur, monkeys, deer, otters, badgers, leopards, Indian pangolin , and wild boar.

Four main rivers—Brahmaputra, Diphlu, Mora Diphlu, and Mora Dhansiri—cross the park. The massive Brahmaputra River, bordering the park to the north, is inhabited by blind Ganges river dolphins, which you can see on a river safari. In addition, there are more than 250 seasonal bodies of water that attract migratory birds from distant lands as far away as Siberia.

Jeep safaris through the park are the best way to explore Kaziranga. Private vehicles aren't allowed to enter the park, so you'll need to book a tour on an authorized vehicle. Your accommodations can likely help you book a tour before arriving for easier planning, but you can also hire one of the vehicles waiting at the Kaziranga Tourist Complex, located just south of Kohora. It handles safari bookings and jeep rental. Jeep safaris can be booked on the spot, and you pay for the entire vehicle, so it's a good idea to wait around and try to join a group if you're traveling solo or as a couple to reduce the cost.

The park has four separate ranges that can be explored and each one has its own headquarters. There's the Central Range at Kohora, the Western Range at Bagori, the Eastern Range at Agoratuli, and the Burhapahar Range at Gorakati. Jeeps travel on a set route, and there are a couple of places where you can stop and get out of the car. The safari route in each range takes about two hours, and many visitors try to see two ranges during a day visit.

The most accessible part to visit is the grassy Central Range, but the Western Range is about 25 minutes away and has the highest density of rhinos. Ideally, aim to see both the Central and Western ranges by jeep safari, as they're very different in terms of landscape and foliage. The Eastern Range is about 40 minutes from Kohora and is best known for its wide array of birds and wetlands, although rhinos and other animals are also present. If you want to get away from the crowds, Burapahar is the least-visited range and the only part of the park that includes hiking trails.

Boat safaris also operate from the newly launched River Tourism Zone at Bhomoraguri in Tezpur, alongside the Brahmaputra River in the park's new area, to promote dolphin tourism. It's located about 30 kilometers from the Burapahar range. The safaris have three different routes, with the longest extending into Burachapori Wildlife Sanctuary west of Kaziranga. However, the best place for river dolphin sighting is near Koliabhumura Bridge in Tezpur.

All budget hotels are in Kohora, near the Central range. It's convenient to stay there as both the Western and Eastern ranges are equally accessible from there. For travelers who want to spend a little more, there are some incredible options like luxurious jungle bungalows or a fully-equipped resort to focus on relaxing during your stay.

  • IORA - The Retreat : One of the most popular Kaziranga hotels is the sprawling IORA - The Retreat resort, located on 20 acres of land just a couple of kilometers from the park's main entrance. Best of all, it's reasonably priced for what's provided, with amenities like a spa, swimming pool, and fitness center.
  • Diphlu River Lodge : This extravagant lodge is located about 15 minutes west of the tourist complex, and has 12 cottages on stilts overlooking the river. It's definitely a luxury stay, but the scenic views and bungalow rooms are worth the cost.
  • Wild Grass Lodge : For a reputable budget option that's popular with foreign visitors and backpackers, the Wild Grass Lodge is located in Bossagaon village, a short drive from Kohora. Its safari rates are a bit less than other similar hotels.

The park is situated in the state of Assam in India's Northeast region on the banks of the Brahmaputra River. It's about 220 kilometers (137 miles) from Guwahati, 100 kilometers (60 miles) from Jorhat, and 75 kilometers (47 miles) from Furkating. The main entrance to the park is at Kohora on National Highway 37, where there are a Tourist Complex and booking offices.

There are airports at Guwahati (which has flights from all over India) and Jorhat (best accessed from Kolkata ). Then, it's a five-hour drive from Guwahati or a two-hour drive from Jorhat, either in private taxi or public bus. Some hotels will provide pick-up services, as well.

Buses and shared vehicles to Kaziranga are available from Palthan Bazaar, near the railway station, in Guwahati. There's an airport shuttle bus that goes to Palthan Bazaar. Alternatively, multiple buses to Kaziranga depart from the Interstate Bus Terminal in Guwahati before 10 a.m. If you arrive after 10 a.m. and want to take a bus, you'll need to go to the transportation hub in the south of Guwahati at Khanapara. Buses and other shared vehicles heading to Upper Assam are readily available there. Buses from Guwahati to Kaziranga can easily be booked on Redbus.in (if you don't have an Indian card, you'll need to use Amazon Pay because foreign cards aren't accepted)

The nearest railway stations are at Jakhalabandha, one hour away (trains run there from Guwahati, take the Guwahati-Silghat Town Passenger ) , and Furkating (for trains from Delhi and Kolkata).

  • Kaziranga National Park is open daily from November to April every year, although the exact dates vary based on accessibility after the monsoon season .
  • The peak time for visiting is December and January, when the weather is most comfortable. The park gets extremely busy during the peak season and it's likely to negatively affect your experience there due to the large crowds.
  • February to early March is the best time to visit to balance out the crowds with the weather. Crowds drop off in March but the weather becomes sweltering as summer begins .
  • A week-long Kaziranga Elephant Festival, held to encourage people to save and protect elephants, takes place at the park from February 11 to 17 every year.
  • Be prepared to pay several different fees to explore Kaziranga. Apart from the park entrance fee, you'll also need to pay for a vehicle entry permit, a jeep hire, camera fees, and also for an armed guard to accompany your tour—which is required of all jeep safaris.

Kaziranga national park – a detailed tour guide.

Kaziranga National PArk

Welcome to the home of the great Indian one-horned rhinoceroses. The idea of going to the infamous Kaziranga National Park itself was like a golden ticket to me. As it was a name familiar to many among us since school days itself, it held immense admiration to me. Familiarised for the rightful reasons that too.

Conserving a good share of the Indian wildlife, among which, are the few species that are under severe threat and are listed under the Vulnerable Species on the IUCN Red List.

The 430 square kilometre park is situated on the southern banks of the Brahmaputra River in Assam.

Conferred as a World UNESCO Heritage Site, the park is known to house approximately 70% of the world’s One-horned rhino population and is one of the largest tiger reserves at their highest density existence.

A trip to this exotic homeland of Indian wildlife is something that’s essential to understand our land better, and the life living within it even better.

Table of Contents

Colonial backdrop

The idea that placed the foundation stone for this park was in the pre-independence period. Mary Curzon, the wife of the Viceroy Lord Curzon, had visited the area and was distressed on not being able to spot any rhinos.

She put forth a recommendation regarding necessary measures to be taken in order to protect the species.

In 1908, after a series of meetings and surveys, the Kaziranga Reserve forest within an area of 90 sq was created. Demarcated around the edges of Eastern Himalayan biodiversity hotspots – Golaghat and Nagaon, protection of the vulnerable species was ensured in their natural habitat.

Along with this she also made sure that the floral species was equally treasured. Even centuries later this idea is very much treasured in the forms of myriad kinds of flora.

When to Visit Kaziranga National Park

The ideal time to visit the park would be between the months of November to April. Winters in Assam can get pretty chilly, but for those who love a cold breeze, the month of December would be perfect for a visit to Kaziranga. I had chosen to visit the park in the mid-week of April. It is a lot hotter, but this is the time you’d be able to spot a lot of animals grazing around and drinking water from the banks of the Brahmaputra. Not going to lie, it gave me the feeling like I’m living in one of the most magical fables.

The authorities cut the access to the park during the monsoon season, as the Brahmaputra river may get flooded and make the travel inconvenient.

To avoid this scenario travelling during the months of June to August is prohibited. The month of May experiences some rainfall, and still would not be the most ideal period to visit.

How to Get to Kaziranga National Park

The nearest airports to the park are the Guwahati International Airport and Jorhat Airport.

Among the two, Jorhat is relatively closer at a distance of 97 km. There are also frequent public transport facilities available at Jorhat, so reaching the park or your stay wouldn’t be much of a chaotic task.

Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati opts   mostly as it has frequent flights connecting both domestically and internationally. From here, the Paltan Bazar bus stand is at a mere distance of 23 km from where you could find direct bus services to the park. In case this seems inconvenient, there are also numerous cab services that can be availed as well.

Furkating station, located 96 km from the park, has well-connected networks from Delhi, Kolkata, Guwahati and so on.

The Jorhat railway station and Guwahati station are farther away than Furkating with a distance beyond 100-200 km.

Since the park is located right in the midpoint on the route to Tezpur and Jorhat, it’s easier to reach the place by cabs and other means of transport.

The park is connected via NH37 to many of the major cities including Guwahati, Jorhat, Golaghat, Shivsagar and so on.

Guwahati to Kaziranga – 176 km

Shivsagar to Kaziranga – 170 km

Jorhat to Kaziranga – 113 km

Golaghat to Kaziranga – 89 km

There are also well-maintained road links to Kolkata, Delhi, Patna and so on.

There are very frequent public transport services available to the town of Kohora. In intervals between the state transport bus timings, there’s private run buses, minibuses and cabs that go en route.

Where to Stay

Tailored to fit your preferences, there are numerous stay options around Kaziranga park. Within the near vicinity itself, there’s resorts, hotels, lodges and camps that have just so much to offer.

They vary in terms of budget and facilities but are at a walkable distance from the park. So based on these factors you can research upon the accommodation and select one that best suits your requirements of budget and amenities.

Pre-booking is the best option as you can avoid the hustle regarding the stay facilities once you reach the park.

They also come along with attractions such as Jeep Safari, trekking, tea garden visit and exploring the tribal villages.

Entering the Kaziranga National Park

Opening in the early hours of 7’30 am, the park offers a tour around it till 4’00 pm. The entry fee is Rs. 50/- per head for Indians, and there are separate fees for the jeep safari, photography and so on.

The fee ranges from Rs. 3,800 to Rs. 5000 for Jeep safari, and again, the price varies for Indians and for foreigners. The rates are quite higher for foreigners in terms of entry and other related fees.

One thing I can assuredly tell you is that the fee is barely an amount to the kind of scenic visual treat Kaziranga arranges for the visitors.

Things to Do in Kaziranga National Park

I couldn’t realise the time passing by while I was at the park and long after I had left the place also the time spent over there stuck with me.

Kaziranga is a full-fledged package with numerous experiences and adventures around it.

  • Refresh at the Kakochang falls
  • Exoticness of the orchid biodiversity park
  • Antique beauty of the National museum
  • The unmatched game drive experience
  • Spellbinding Culture of Assam

1. Kakochang Waterfalls

Distance: 48 km

Located around Bokakhat of Jorhat, Kakochang waterfall is a well-known tourist attraction near Kaziranga. The 4 km trek up to the falls is beyond magical with the dewy elephant grass below and the cloudy skies above. Kakochang looked like the converging point of the skies and the grasslands, almost like the heavens stepping down to Earth.

The falls aren’t as heavy in the summer season and you can step down into the refreshing waters.

If you’re mapping your route from Jorhat to Kaziranga, it becomes easier to make a halt at this place and then leave for the park.

It is also a very famous eat out spot with several stalls and cafeterias selling the local cuisine and street food.

The post-monsoon period feels like an out of the world sight. The rainfall adds on to the glimmering threads of water plummeting from the falls.

Other attractions you can notice from this point are the historical ruins of Numaligarh and Deoparbat.

2. Kaziranga Orchid and Biodiversity Park

Distance: 26 km

There’s an infamous Orchid park of Kaziranga at Durgapur and one closer to its heart at Hatikhuli. Established in 2015, this park is the contemporary add on to the age-old ideas of conserving the flora. With the greenhouses sheltering almost 600 species of orchids, the park has the largest collection of exotic and native orchids in India.

Most of these collections are brought in from all over the northeastern parts of India.

Apart from the greenhouses, you can go around on a peaceful nature walk and explore the rich biodiversity of the beautiful seven sisters of India.

There is a cactus park not far away from here which grows above 300 species of cacti. Cacti is a quintessential attribute in the medicines and food of the North Easterns. Walking around the park, I was offered a certain plant called stevia which is used as a natural sweetener in their diets.

Sweeter than table sugar, yet consists very fewer calories. It was among those few times I wouldn’t have minded switching to healthier and organic options.

This place is a feather added to the crown of Kaziranga.

3.Assam State Museum

Distance: 175 km

Established during the pre-independence years by the Kamarupa Anusandhan Samiti (Assam research society), the State Museum is one of the most treasured gems of North East India.

Set amidst the 1940s, it’s a mesmerising collection of the ancient sculptures, handicrafts and other antiquities.

Developed under the presidency of Kanklal Baruah, the state had taken up the authority to develop the museum and brought it under their initiatives in 1953. The true essence of tribal culture and traditions are the highlights of this museum. Information regarding each of the 97 enlisted tribes and their lifestyles are narrated through every bit of material kept carefully within glass cases and barricades.

The museum is at Guwahati and can be easily accessed through direct transportation facilities arranged by the State transport.

It attracts a lot of history buffs and enthusiasts every day, and there’s uncalled respect for the Assamese culture that lingers within the air here.

Another attraction nearby is the bamboo technology park not more than 3 km from the museum.

4. Experience the Local Culture

Distance: Within the park

Right around the several tourist spots, you can find Assamese people celebrating their extensive culture in everything they do.

To begin the day, from a humble stall I was offered a warm plate of thali with almost 30 dishes including rice cooked to perfection and gravies with flavourful crushed spices and cream. Wrapping up the day in the same style, there was a delightful performance of the traditional dance Bihu with people dressed in shades of beige and red.

At the Orchid and Bio-diversity park, I noticed few localites exhibiting the craftsmanship of the Bodo tribe with pride. I brought a shawl from them, for which I was given a warm smile and a welcoming invitation to their humble settlements across the park.

Inside the park, there’s a small Pavillion with a stage set for the cultural performances that’d happen around evening.

One among them is the infamous Bamboo dance, where men hold bamboo poles to the ground with a rhythmic pace while women dance between them to the music.

5. Game Drive

Undoubtedly one of the main highlights of the park is the jeep safari. Taking you around the dirt tracks of the park, the drive can be booked either on the spot or online pre-booking.

Divided into four zones, Central, Eastern, Western and Ghorakati range, the entry formalities will be taken care of at the respective entry points.

The safari costs for the ranges differ from Rs 3,800 to Rs 5,000. I was provided with the information regarding the zones via a brochure and the guides offering the safari around.

Select your preferred range carefully as each of them have a specific concentration of animals and fascinating features. Bird watchers might be more interested in the Eastern range, while the Western range is home to an increased number of rhinos. Apart from these, you would also be able to spot the hawk-eyed eagles, Bengal monitor lizards, roof turtles, Asian water buffaloes, Rhesus macaque and so much more.

There are two different shifts, one in the morning and the other, in the afternoon hours. The Kohora range particularly interested me and the package came within the budget of 3,800 Rs.

Also known as the Central Zone, the Kohora provided the most beautiful sight of elephants and rhinoceroses wallowing around as the first few rays of the sun hit the grass fields.

Ensure the necessary safety precautions before and during the drive. Especially because, if luck has it, you might encounter different wildlife at Kaziranga National Park.

With Kaziranga travel packages , hop on a tour to this park from November to April, and take rides on elephants or choose to cruise in a boat on the Brahmaputra river along the park. Inhabited by major populations including 35 species of mammals, out of which 15 are considered as endangered species; this park also shelters the highest density of tigers in the world and therefore it became a Tiger Reserve in the year 2006.

Things to do while on a Kaziranga Tour

Kaziranga is the place where man and nature meets together, where wildlife roams fearlessly, and where nature unwinds its pristine form in millions of hues. Comprising western, central and eastern ranges, the central range of the park doubles as the venue for elephant safaris. Here are a few things that you can do in this wonderful place:

1. Go on an Elephant Safari

Take rides on gigantic elephants, and go deep inside the wilderness of the park to enjoy the lush-green view, especially during the morning. This is one of the most effective ways of coming face to face with wildlife, since the elephants seem to know exactly where to go when looking for the elusive tigers and leopards.

2. Hop on a jeep safari

You can also choose to go on a jeep safari, which mostly keeps to the paved pathways inside the national park. A jeep safari is great for those looking for a little more comfort and want to cover more grounds in the hopes of coming face to face with wildlife.

3. Enjoy a cruise ride in a boat on the Brahmaputra river

This is one of the most popular things to do when on a tour of Kaziranga. Taking a boat ride on the Brahmaputra river will bring you that much closer to nature, and who knows, you might even get lucky enough to spot a few of those elusive Gangetic dolphins while you are at it.

Kaziranga National park ( Assamese : কাজিৰঙা Kājiraṅā ) in Upper Assam is famous throughout India as the home of the rhinoceros. As the region's principal tourist attraction, the park draws over 170,000 visitors every year. It has been very effective in protecting species at risk such as the Indian one-horned rhinoceros (of the 3600 left worldwide, 2400 are in Kaziranga park).

Understand [ edit ]

Its success in conservation has had a price. Forest guards, heavily armed and largely immune to prosecution, killed 50 people from 2013-2015. There are no fences or signs marking the edge of the park; alleged poachers and anyone wandering within the park at night risks being shot on sight or with very little warning. Local villagers and tribal peoples have often been maimed or killed. Many villagers have been dispossessed of homes and land to allow park expansion.

History [ edit ]

Kaziranga National Park was said to be first recognised around 1940, but was established in 1974. It has been substantially expanded over the years, resulting in neighbouring villages being demolished for land reclamation, leading to controversy.

The park was devastated by the July 2019 flooding, which had killed over 140 large mammals, which included at least 12 rhinos.

Landscape [ edit ]

Flora and fauna [ edit ].

kaziranga tours and travels

Kaziranga hosts a rich and diverse population of almost 42 species of fish, 9 species of amphibians, 27 species of reptiles, more than 491 species of birds and 35 species of mammals. Among the larger mammals, there are almost 86 tigers (2000 census), 1048 elephants (2002 census), 2048 rhinos (2009 census), 1431 buffalo (2001 census) and 486 swamp deer. Kaziranga also houses more than 546 species of flora. Kaziranga is said to have about 86 tigers, which is the highest density of tigers in the world (1 every 5 km², 2000 census)

Visitors seldom see tigers due to the dense, tall grass. The rhinoceros is the real star of the park. Kaziranga also has one of the very last populations of truly wild Asian water buffalo, but even here there are many feral descendants of domesticated water buffalo, and hybridization occurs. The park is also the last haven for greater adjutant storks, with fewer than one hundred nesting pairs.

Climate [ edit ]

The climate is typically tropical. It varies from very hot and humid in the summer (April to June) to cold nights and warm days in thewinter (from November to January). Kaziranga gets flooded by the water of the Brahmaputra River almost every year during the monsoon. The rainy season prevails from June to August. When it rains, Kaziranga becomes inaccessible. The best time to visit Kaziranga is in September - October or February/March.

Get in [ edit ]

By bus - Guwahati (217 km, ₹200), Jorhat (96 km, ₹70), Nagaon, Dibrugarh, Tezpur (75 km, ₹50) or Tinsukia. Get down at Kohora Town on Guwahati-Jorhat route. If visiting Kaziranga after a trip to Arunachal Pradesh, Tezpur is the best destination from which to catch a bus here. If entering the state of Assam via Guwahati, take a bus from there to Kaziranga National Park. Bus fare varies between private service and Government service.

By air - Nearest airport is in Jorhat town, which is 96 km away from Kaziranga. Jorhat is connected to Kolkata, Delhi and Guwahati by regular flights.

By rail - The nearest railway station to Kaziranga is Furkating, which is 80 km away. Furkating is connected by trains from Delhi and Kolkata.

By motorcycle - Another way to reach Kaziranga from Guwahati and Kohima is by riding a motorcycle in a group, which is conducted as guided motorcycle tours in the state of Assam and adjoining states. Tours are operated by various adventure tourism firms. These adventure motorbike tours covers the states of Assam , Meghalaya , Nagaland , and Arunachal Pradesh , giving a traveller to visit to not only popular places but also rural parts of the region to experience first-hand of tribal cultures and traditions.

Fees and permits [ edit ]

₹500 (₹100) entry fee

Terrain vehicle ride: Based on which part of the National Park one wants to visit, the terrain vehicle fare may vary. Central Range : ₹1800, Western Range : ₹1900, Eastern Range  : ₹1800, Kalapahar Range : ₹2200 as of Feb 2016. It is recommended to visit the Western and the Central Ranges both by Terrain vehicle and elephant. If you prefer birds and have a good camera, the Eastern Range is preferred. The costs will vary depending on your hotel. The price will be the for Indians and foreigners.

Elephant ride: ₹1950 (₹950) Central Range. You can see rhinos very up and close while on an elephant ride. There are two batches (015-06:15, 06:15-07:15) for the elephant ride. It is advisable to make the trip in the second slot during winter months as fog and a late sunrise does not allow one to see anything during the first slot.

There are extra charges for carrying a nicer camera (still or video) inside the park. The charges are different for Indian and foreign tourists. The charges are also different for amateurs and professionals depending on the level of equipment you bring in.

Your hotel should be able to book everything for you if you advise them before 19:00 the day before.

Get around [ edit ]

The only ways of getting around inside Kaziranga National Park is in a Terrain vehicle or by elephant safari.

See [ edit ]

kaziranga tours and travels

Watch wildlife either from on top of an elephant or from a Terrain vehicle. All of the plain lands are infested by tall elephant grass, so it is more convenient to watch wildlife from an elephant's back. Rhinos, wild buffalo, hog deer, etc can be easily seen from an elephant back's view. Most of the animals are habituated with human presence and don't feel shy. Carrying a good pair of binoculars is a must whether watching from a Terrain vehicle or while riding an elephant.

Do [ edit ]

  • Stay at one of the local lodges, such as Nature hunt Eco Camp, Wild Grass Resort or Diphlu River Lodge. A evening of music and great food rounds off the day so nicely.
  • Take an elephant ride into the grassland for up-close encounters with the famous one-horned rhinocerous. Elephant rides take place very early in the morning and last about an hour.
  • Take a terrain vehicle tour of the park to see other wildlife such as storks, fish-eagles, and barasingha (swamp deer).

Buy [ edit ]

Different forest products are sold near Mihimukh entrance of Kaziranga NP. In Kohora, there are many shops, selling different kinds of forest products and local handicrafts.

Eat [ edit ]

There are few restaurants in the area. All of he tourist lodges have their own facilities for food. Most of the time the food is a little expensive. There is an office cum resting place for Network Buses and there is food available for non-passengers too. There are only a few rice hotels at Kohora near National Highway.

Drink [ edit ]

There are several wine shops at Kohora though the liquor is not cheap. Getting chilled bottles is not possible every time because there are acute power shortages in the area.

Sleep [ edit ]

In Kohora (on Guwahati-Jorhat route) there is a huge campus of Assam Tourism Department just opposite to Kohora bus stop (when coming from Guwahati/Tezpur side). Here you can find a number of economical and deluxe accommodations (₹400-2000 per night per room) in a number of tourist lodges. It is very convenient to stay here as the office of "Kaziranga Development and Jeep safari association" is also located here hence you can directly book all your safaris without going through any agents in between.

Hiking in Kaziranga is prohibited to stop man-animal conflicts, so going on a terrain vehicle or elephant-back tour are the only options. There is malaria in the region, but night-flying mosquitos are not active during the winter months which are the ideal time for visiting. Most local cases of malaria occur in the summer, when the park is closed.

Go next [ edit ]

If you head to Kohora across from the main entrance to Kaziranga, you can reserve a bus there or just wait for a bus heading to your location as it passes by. Buses pass frequently.

Hills of Karby Anglong district is a nice place for an outing. Drive down to Sibsagar , in Upper Assam, to visit the famed "Rong Ghor", an amphitheatre built by Ahom kings for their entertainment.

Kaziranga National Park: A Comprehensive Travel Guide

Home / Blog / Kaziranga National Park: A Comprehensive Travel Guide

One_horn_Rhino_in_Kaziranga_National_Park_in_Assam

From the one horned rhinoceros to wild water buffalo & a rich flora, a wildlife safari in Kaziranga National Park will surprise you with its vastness, richness & diversity!

Kaziranga National Park will never cease to surprise visitors, wildlife lovers, ornithologists and naturalists with its vastness, richness and unbelievable diversity, both in its landscape and wildlife. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Kaziranga National Park stretches across the districts of Golaghat, Karbi Anglong and Nagaon in Assam. The Park is also criss crossed by four major rivers which are the Brahmaputra, Mora Diphlu, Diphlu and Mora Dhansiri.

Kaziranga is one of the few wild breeding areas outside Africa, which are home to multiple species of large cats like leopards and Royal Bengal Tigers. However, it is most famous for the gigantic and endangered one horned rhinoceros, whose present population in the park is around 2,413. It houses two thirds of the total world population of one horned rhinoceros. The Park also boasts the highest density of Royal Bengal Tigers among protected areas in the world and was declared Kaziranga Tiger Reserve in 2006. It has also been recognised as an Important Bird Area (IBA) by Birdlife International for the conservation and protection of various avifaunal species.

The history of Kaziranga has it that in 1904, Lord Curzon, the Viceroy of India, and his wife, Mary Curzon, embarked on an excursion to this very region. Mary however, was disappointed at not sighting any rhinos. She persuaded her husband to take measures for their protection. Thus, in 1905, almost 232 square kilometers of Kaziranga was declared a Proposed Reserve Forest. 152 square kilometers were added in 1908, whereby it was declared a Reserve Forest. In 1916, Kaziranga was renamed Kaziranga Game Sanctuary & in 1950 as Kaziranga Wildlife Sanctuary. It was in 1968 that it was declared a national park by adding 430 square kilometers to its total size. In 1985, UNESCO recognised it as a world heritage site.

Two of the largest snakes in the world, the reticulated python & rock python, are found in the park. The longest venomous snake, the King Cobra, is also found here. Other reptiles include the fifteen species of turtles like Assam roofed turtle and brown tortoise.

Kaziranga National Park also has a rich aquatic life which resides in its water bodies. Almost 42 species of fish are found inside the park, including speciality species like freshwater pufferfish.

Fauna in Kaziranga National Park

Four main types of vegetation are found inside the Kaziranga National Park. These are alluvial inundated grasslands, alluvial savanna woodlands, tropical moist mixed deciduous forests and tropical semi evergreen forests. There is also an altitudinal difference in the eastern and western areas of the park. The western areas are dominated by grasslands.

Tall elephant grass is found on higher grounds, while the lower grounds are dominated by short grasses. The common tall grasses which are found are sugarcanes, spear grass, elephant grass and common reed. Several types of aquatic floras are found in the ponds and lakes including lotuses and water lilies.

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow, a City Like No Other

Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.

Moscow Tours centering on Russian History

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

What is the best time to visit moscow.

Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide

How many days are enough in Moscow?

If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you. Take a walk in Zariadye park: one of the coolest things to do in Moscow after visiting Red Square

Zaryadie Park is just a 10-minute walk from St. Basil’s Cathedral, so it’s easy to include in your itinerary if you’re going to visit Moscow in 2 days. From its heights, you can see the red walls of the Kremlin. But, the most impressive point of view is the platform which overlooks the Moskva river. A must see! And clearly one of the coolest things to do in Moscow!

  • Open 24 hours a day
  • Good to know! Park Zaryadye is also a place to visit in Moscow in winter. Find out more here: What to do in Moscow in winter?

In addition, several pedestrian or one-way streets are located north of the theater. It is therefore very pleasant to find them to leave the main axes of the megalopolis.

Visit the Moscow Kremlin

Visit Kremlin is on top of things to do in Moscow. A place of power for centuries, the Kremlin then shows us a whole different image when viewed from the inside. If you want to visit Moscow in 2 days, the Kremlin is certainly one of the must-see places in Moscow.

  • Opening hours : Daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., except Thursday.
  • See our blog post about visiting the Moscow Kremlin

Moscow Kremlin: skip-the-line tickets and 8 things not to miss

Visit the Cathedral of Christ the Savior

This impressive Moscow Cathedral is the seat of the Russian Orthodox Church. It is a must see if you visit Moscow in 2 days and clearly one of the things to do in Moscow. The Cathedral of Christ the Savior was first built in 1883 in memory of Russia’s victory over Napoleon’s Grand Army. Then in 1931 Stalin ordered its destruction. It was then rebuilt again (identically) only in 2000.

  • Where? Ulitsa Volkhonka 15. At the foot of the Kropotkinskaya metro station.
  • Opening hours . Daily: 10: 00-17: 00, except Monday: 13: 00-17: 00
  • Free entry (some closing restrictions, for example a short)

Good to know! In orthodox religious places, one must avoid excessively uncovered clothing. Women should cover their heads. After visiting the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, you can explore Bolotny Island and Gorky Park. This is one of the routes our guide to Moscow.

Cathedral of Christ the Savior

The old Krasny Oktyabr factory: one of the coolest things to do in Moscow

If you cross the Moskva River by a pedestrian bridge which is located just in front of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, you will enjoy a beautiful view of the city and at the same time you can discover Balchug Island. Furthermore, if you want to visit Moscow in 2 days, you can include this island in your itinerary between the cathedral and Gorky park. Here is the old confectionery factory Krasny Oktyabr, which has gradually turned into a fashionable micro-district. There are then some elements of street art, cafes and restaurants and some Moscow bohemian side. At the end of the island you can see a gigantic 98-meter-high monument dedicated to the Russian reforming tsar Pierre The Great.

Good to know! You can find on this island are the trendiest nightclubs in Moscow. On weekends, there are taxi caps after midnight so there are so many people. On the other hand, if you go there in winter and during the day, the island is quite empty and less interesting to see.

Gorky Park is one of the TOP places to visit in Moscow, because it allows you to better understand the life of the locals and their rhythm. In fact, it’s a huge entertainment park. For example, in winter there is a giant ice rink and in summer – free dance or yoga lessons, sandy beaches for playing volleyball, an outdoor cinema. So, like the locals, have a Stakantchik (ice cream or cooked corn), and enjoy the atmosphere of the place: that’s one of the interesting things to do in Moscow to discover the city.

  • Where? Krymsky Val 9. 20 minutes’ walk from Krasny Oktyabr, along the quays.

Sparrow Hill and Moscow State University

The Sparrow Hill, Vorobiovy Gori in Russian, is the highest point in Moscow. It is rather known to Russians, but less to travelers. A nice view on Moscow opens from the hill, and in particular on the Luzhniki Stadium. In addition, on the hill itself is the Moscow State University: an impressive skyscraper from the Soviet era.

  • How to get there? By bus T7 (35 min) from Oktyaborskaya station, near Gorki Park. By metro (Vorobiovy Gorki station) + climb the hill on foot. On foot along the Moskva along the Gorky Park (1h30) + climb in funiculars.

Good to know! It is possible to cross the Moskva river by funicular. We actually tested it and it was pretty cool! That is one of our favorite things to do in Moscow!

What to do in Moscow

What to do in Moscow in 3 days?

If you are going to visit Moscow in 3 days, it would be interesting to dive into the Soviet era which strongly marked the country and the city. After the Bolshevik Revolution, the capital was transferred from Saint Petersburg to Moscow, in order to mark the change of power. Moscow then became the world showcase for communist ideology. Here are the best things to do in Moscow for 3-day-trip!

VDNKh, visit Moscow of the Soviet era

VDNKh is a large exhibition center in the north of Moscow, where there are still several striking witnesses of the USSR. The most interesting are the Museum of Cosmonauts and the Statue of the Worker and the Kolkhozian , which will certainly impress you with its size!

Visit

GULAG History Museum

The explanations of the museum are very well done. We really have the feeling of going back in time. If you are going to visit Moscow in 3 days and you are interested in history and this subject in particular, I recommend this museum. Visit the GULAG History Museum is one of the most interesting things to do in Moscow.

Discover the Patriarche Pounds district

It’s a nice neighborhood in Moscow where you can come across rather affluent locals, but not necessarily very bling-bling. Take a walk in this area is really a cool thing to do in Moscow! In addition, the Ponds of Patriarch is one of the places of Bulgakov’s novel “Master and Margarita”. As this is an interesting area to see, we have included it in a walking tour of Moscow. The route ends at the Moscow Kremlin, which is very convenient, because you will be able to visit Moscow in 3 days by optimizing your trips.

What to visit in Moscow in 4 days: TOP things to do in Moscow in 4 days

If you want to visit Moscow in 3 days, you will already see a lot of things. On the other hand, if you stay one more day, you have plenty to do! The Novodevichy Convent, the Tchistie Proudy district and the Izmaylovo Kremlin are very good candidates for you, if you are going to visit Moscow in 4 days.

Visiting Novodevichy Convent in Moscow

The Novodevichy Convent is one of the most brilliant examples of Russian architecture, according to UNESCO. This beautiful complex was built in 1524 and today consists of the convent, but also of a cemetery whose status could be compared to that of Père-Lachaise in Paris. Visiting Novodevichy Convent is one of the great things to do in Moscow, if you want to go a little bit outside of the center!

What to see in Moscow in one day

Discovering Tchistye Proudy district

It’s one of the most popular areas of Moscow, with many cafes, restaurants and bars nearby. It is therefore a place to discover if you want to visit Moscow in 4 days. It is just as pleasant for a stroll as for the discovery of local life. For example, in winter the pond turns into an ice rink.

Visiting the Izmaylovo Kremlin, one of the coolest things to do in Moscow!

The Izmaylovo Kremlin is more of a tourist than a historic place. On the other hand, it is a pretty impressive place to discover, especially on weekends. Inside the Kremlin, there is a flea market where you can find a little bit of everything, but mostly good souvenirs to bring from Moscow. For example, chapka, traditional Russian scarves or matryoshka (Russian dolls). Add the Kremlin and the Izmaïlovo market to your itinerary if you are going to visit Moscow in 4 days, because it is a nice and very colorful place! Visiting the Izmailovo Kremlin is one of the things to do in Moscow, if you want to put colors in your Instagram account! 😉

Things to do Moscow blog

In 4 days, we will have the opportunity to see several Moscow: Classic Moscow, Moscow of old Russia, Soviet Moscow and a little bit of the new Moscow. So what to visit in Moscow on the 5th day of travel?

What to visit in Moscow in 5 days?

Art lovers will be delighted to discover the Tretyakov Gallery and the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts, while others will prefer to stroll along Arbat Street, see the buildings of Moskva-City or visit Bunker 42.

Admiring Russian art at Tretyakov Gallery

Founded in 1856 by an industrialist and great lover of art, the gallery has grown over the decades, and then bequeathed to the state. Today the collection includes more than 140,000 pieces, 15,000 of which are paintings. Visiting the Tretyakov Gallery is one of the things to do in Moscow if you want to discover Russian art!

  • Where? Pereoulok Lavrouchinski 10. A 5-minute walk from Tretiakovskaya station
  • Opening hours. Open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. Thursday and Friday. Closed on Mondays.
  • Entry tickets. 500 RUB.

Museum to see

Visiting the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts

The Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts presents the treasures of ancient Egypt, the paintings of Rembrandt and Cézanne, a fine collection of Impressionism.

  • Where? Ulitsa Volkhonka 12
  • Opening hours. Daily: 10: 00-20: 00, except Thursday: 11: 00-21: 00. Closed on Mondays. The boxes close an hour before closing.
  • Entry tickets. The prices vary according to the collections from 300 to 750 RUB.

Walking on Arbat Street

All Russians know Rue Arbat. So, walking on Arbat street is one of the things to do in Moscow. However, after the years, little by little it became very touristy. This is a pedestrian street only. There are souvenir shops, restaurants and cafes there, but it is no longer the most authentic neighborhood in the city.

Seeing the buildings of Moskva-City (Moscow City)

Moskva-City is Moscow’s business center, much like Paris’s Defense district. The skyscrapers of Moskva-City are among the tallest in Europe: 373 meters high! Very nice place to see at dusk.

Good to know! You can admire a nice view of Moscow City from the docks of Tarasa Shevchenko. It’s especially beautiful in the evening with all the lights on.

Bunker 42, one of the most unusual things to do in Moscow

Bunker 42 is a secret military complex which was to be used by the Soviets in the event of a nuclear attack: a space of 7000 m² 65 meters underground!

  • Where? 5 Kotelnitcheski Lane, 11.
  • Prices. 2200 RUB per person
  • Opening hours. Open daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Restaurant inside. Original, but rather a tourist trap.

What to visit in Moscow in 6 days or more?

There are still so many places to see, because Moscow is a big megalopolis and there is always something exciting to do there. For example: the ancient Kolomenskoye village or the WINZAVOD contemporary art center .

If you are interested in history and want to see Russian cities on a rather “human scale”, it would certainly be interesting for you to discover the cities of the Golden Ring . For example, it is very easy to get to Sergey Posad from Moscow (less than 2 hours in train). Visiting the Golden Ring is one of the best things to do in Moscow if you are staying more than a 5-6 days.

There are still plenty of places to see in Moscow, however I did my best to list here the best things to do in Moscow, what to see in Moscow in one day, but also in 2, 3, 4 or 5 days in Moscow!
