‘Harry Potter’ star Tom Felton visits NYC for ‘Beyond the Wand’ book signing

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — An hour before ‘Harry Potter’ star Tom Felton’s sold-out “Beyond the Wand: The Magic and Mayhem of Growing Up a Wizard” book signing began , more than 200 people were milling in queues outside of the Fifth Avenue Barnes and Noble on Oct. 18, 2022.

Greens and silvers, the colors of Slytherin House, were worn by many of those mingling amongst themselves as security guards, dressed in all black, ushered rounds of people into the warmth of the bookstore beyond.

Curious onlookers paused to ask attendees who they were waiting for. They were met with enthusiastic replies: “Tom Felton! Draco Malfoy from ‘Harry Potter!’”

Fans came from all over to get an autographed copy of Felton’s new book and a photo-op. Parents pulled kids from school, others crossed state lines for birthday trips to New York City and some brought their work along — one person going so far as to bring a laptop and sit down on the sidewalk during the wait.

Erica Pedroski came from Massachusetts to meet Felton: An early birthday present from her parents.

“I’m totally in love with Tom Felton since I was, like, 10-years-old,’' Pedroski said. “I love the parts he was in (’Harry Potter and the) Deathly Hollows: Part 2.’ I don’t know what to expect at all (about his book) — I’m so excited ... I hope it’s going to be amazing.”

“I may shed a tear (meeting him)... It’ll be my first ‘Harry Potter’ cast member to meet, plus I can go to the (Harry Potter) store after, so it’s a whole experience,’' said Connecticut resident Russell Grayson, who said he’s been a fan since he was six years old and saw the actor in a ‘97 movie called “The Borrowers.”

“I am team Slytherin all the way,” New York City resident Rosa Richardson said. “He’s not my favorite ‘Harry Potter’ character, but he is my best friend’s daughter’s favorite ‘Harry Potter’ character, so I’m going to FaceTime her... She’s like, ‘Oh my God, he’s so cute, I’m so obsessed!’ So I’m going to stand here and be very, very happy for her.”

Hidden behind a section cordoned off by cream curtains was the man himself, armed with a Sharpie instead of a wand. Security guards held bags and jackets to give fans the perfect meet-and-greet opportunity, with a staff member snapping photos.

Even after 2 p.m., hundreds of people were still queued in line to meet him.

While Felton may be finished with the New York portion of his book tour, he was to appear in the Barnes and Noble in Paramus, New Jersey, at 7 p.m. on Oct. 18 before heading to Philadelphia on Oct. 19.

“Beyond the Wand: The Magic and Mayhem of Growing Up a Wizard” is available now, with Barnes and Noble ranking it as one of the best books of 2022 on its website.

Tom Felton is an English actor, best known for playing Draco Malfoy in the Harry Potter films. He has also appeared in Rise of the Planet of the Apes , Belle , The Flash , A United Kingdom , The Forgotten Battle , and onstage in 2.22 A Ghost Story in London’s West End. He lives in London with his dog Willow.

Ben Lyons is an internationally known host, producer, and marketing consultant working at the intersection of sports, film, media, and culture. After 9 years working as an on-air personality and content contributor at ESPN and ESPN-Los Angeles, he partnered with Michael Davies and Embassy Row to launch the Amazon Sports Network for Amazon Prime. He remains a contributing correspondent for CBS-LA and a host and contributor for Turner Sports. He is the Host of GM School for NBA-TV, a consultant and brand strategist for REVEL Moments and FRANCHISE Magazine , as well as a contributing writer for Caddie Magazine and co-host of the podcast The Festival Rules . In 2019, he began hosting the digital series Gimmes for Loot , and contributed branded content to the PGA Tour’s digital platform, Skratch. He hosted My Family’s Got Guts on Nickelodeon and helped launch The Players’ Tribune. In 2020, Ben co-hosted ABC’s official After Party coverage of the Oscars and previously hosted the official livestream of the Academy Awards. While Ben hosted Oscars: All Access , the show won an Emmy Award. He serves on film juries for AFI, Aruba, and GenArt. In 2019, Ben and producing partner Sean Carey formed RebelCode, a full-service development, production, distribution, and marketing company and platform dedicated to creating premium cinematic sports storytelling. Additional producing credits include Alekesam , The American Meme , Shut Up and Dribble , and Spaceman . Lyons co-founded Athletes Rock The Vote and created Hoopers Vote. The real-life wizard and beloved Harry Potter star comes to Symphony Space to launch his new memoir. Moderated by Ben Lyons ( CBS LA ), Beyond the Wand ; offers a backstage pass to Tom Felton’s life—the challenges of growing up in the spotlight, navigating both the muggle world and the wizarding world, and working with cinematic greats such as Alan Rickman, Dame Maggie Smith, and nine-year-old Emma Watson, who would become one of his dearest friends.

There are a limited number of companion tickets available; these tickets are $20 and do not include a book. To purchase a companion ticket, add a standard ticket and a companion ticket to your cart. The companion ticket will be discounted at checkout. Note that companion tickets are only available to purchase with a full-price ticket and don't include a copy of the book. Tom Felton, the beloved actor behind Harry Potter’s teenage bad-boy Draco Malfoy, has announced that he has a memoir being released this fall!

The book is titled  Beyond the Wand: The Magic and Mayhem of Growing Up a Wizard .

Felton announced the upcoming memoir himself on his socials, in a video addressing his fans.

According to Felton, The book will tell all about his life, from suddenly being thrust into the spotlight as Hogwart’s blondest young wizard to his relationships with fellow cast members.

The synopsis of Beyond the Wand says: 

“Speaking with great candor and his signature humor, Tom shares his experience growing up as part of the wizarding world while also trying to navigate the muggle world. He tells stories from his early days in the business like his first acting gig where he was mistaken for fellow blonde child actor Macaulay Culkin and his Harry Potter audition where, in a very Draco-like move, he fudged how well he knew the books the series was based on (not at all).”

In his announcement video, which he teased on his socials on May 25 before coming clean with his surprise on May 27, Felton had the following to say:

“I’m finally getting the chance to release and announce that I have written a book and it will be coming out this October . I just want to let you know that I really appreciate all of you and I can’t wait for you to read some of the stories that you’ve never heard before from all the various Potter years and everything that came before and after.”

There’s no doubt that Harry Potter fans will be eager to get their hands on the memoir — stories they’ve never heard before? Felton sure knows how to get Potterheads’ attention!

If that wasn’t enough, he released two snippets from Beyond the Wand to wet our appetites.

“ At lunchtime we would congregate in the canteen, which was always a fun moment. There was no separation of roles. An electrician would be queuing for his lunch next to a witch and a goblin, then a cameraman, a carpenter and Hagrid.

“ They called for a break, and Gambon magicked up a cigarette from out of his beard. He and I were often to be found outside the stage door, having ‘a breath of fresh air’, as we referred to it. There would be painters and plasterers and chippies and sparks, and among them all would be me and Dumbledore having a crafty cigarette. “

Felton isn’t the first Harry Potter actor to have become an author. Evannah Lynch (the unforgettable Luna Lovegood), and Bonny Wright (Ginny Weasley), already have books out to purchase, and Jessie Cave (Lavender Brown) has several, including a novel and a play.

Beyond the Wand  is due to be released in hardcover and digitally on October 13, 2022 in the UK, and then five days later, on October 18, in the US. In the UK the book will be published by Ebury Spotlight, and in the US by Grand Central Publishing.

There will also be a simultaneously published audiobook version, read by Felton himself, published by Penguin Random House Audio in the UK, and Hachette Audio in the US.

Beyond the Wand is available for preorder now in both the US and the UK.

In an exciting announcement, Tom Felton revealed today that he has a memoir coming out this fall. The book is titled Beyond the Wand: The Magic and Mayhem of Growing Up a Wizard .

The memoir will cover his experiences playing the role of Draco Malfoy in Harry Potter , including dealing with being thrust into the spotlight at a young age and creating lasting relationships with fellow cast members. The synopsis says, “Speaking with great candor and his signature humor, Tom shares his experience growing up as part of the wizarding world while also trying to navigate the [M]uggle world. He joins the growing list of Harry Potter cast members who have become published authors. Bonnie Wright’s guide to sustainable living, Go Gently , was released last month. Evanna Lynch’s eating-disorder memoir, The Opposite of Butterfly Hunting , was published last fall. And Jessie Cave (Lavender Brown) has been busy in the publishing world, with a novel ( Sunset ), a play ( Sunrise ), and a book of illustrations ( Love Sick ).

Beyond the Wand is set to be published in hardcover and digitally on October 13 in the United Kingdom and October 18 in the United States. Ebury Spotlight is publishing it in the UK, with an anticipated page count of 308, while Grand Central Publishing will be the US publisher, with a planned page count of 272.

There will also be a simultaneously published audiobook version read by Tom, published by Penguin Random House Audio in the UK and Hachette Audio in the US.

Tom Felton Explores Struggles With Fame, Friendships With ‘H.P.’ Co-Stars in New Memoir ‘Beyond the Wand’

The “Harry Potter” actor reveals to Shondaland how Emma Watson inspired him to write his new book, how he coped with fame, and what lessons he learned from volunteering on Venice Beach.

It’s difficult to imagine a young actor not being overjoyed at the prospect of appearing in a film based on one of the biggest book series in the world. Yet, as Tom Felton shares in his new memoir, Beyond the Wand: The Magic and Mayhem of Growing Up a Wizard , his reaction to the audition for Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone was less than exuberant.

“I approached it with my usual lack of overt enthusiasm,” he writes in the book. “Whereas all the other kids were wildly excited about the prospect of being in a film, and clearly knew the book inside out, I was the complete opposite.” Evidently, this nonchalant attitude made an impact on the filmmakers, who cast Felton in the role of Draco Malfoy, the series’ cunning antagonist and rival of Harry Potter.

The memoir provides a behind-the-scenes look into Felton’s life before, during, and after the Potter films. He writes openly of his struggles with addiction and depression and says that while he found the act of writing about his experiences to be cathartic, he never expected anyone else to read about them. “I never wrote any of it, especially the hardest stuff, thinking that someone’s going to read it,” he tells Shondaland. “I did my first interview a few days ago, and someone talked about some of the struggles that I’ve been through, and I immediately was like, ‘How do you know that?!’ ‘You wrote it down in a book, Tom …’”

Felton recently spoke with Shondaland about his Harry Potter castmates, his advice to young actors, and the mental health benefits of volunteering.

SANDRA EBEJER: I have a son who has been obsessed with Harry Potter for a few years, so it was fun to read the behind-the-scenes stories in your book. What made you decide to write this book now?

TOM FELTON: It had never really been a book that I intended to do. I’m a bit of a writer, I always have been, and this is the culmination of years of scribbling down bits and pieces of notes. I’ve been lucky enough to do loads of comic-con experiences around the world where [there are] Q&As, and seemingly normal stories to me are actually quite interesting to some people. So, I go to these Q&As and then come back to a hotel room or wherever, and I just keep thinking about all the details, mostly because I don’t want to forget them. Hotels always have a pencil and [paper] next to the bed, so I furiously scribble [details] down. Emma Watson was one of the first people to read a handful of these scribbled notes, and she was very encouraging to say, “Tell the full story, not just the comic-con answers. Go deeper.” So, that’s where it started. I still can’t believe that it’s here, and there actually is a book. I’m a bit giddy about it, to be honest.

SE: You’ve done so many other roles in film, TV, and theater. Does it frustrate you that Draco Malfoy is the role you’re most associated with?

TF: I’m very happy with it. Not only do I look a little bit different from Draco because of the hair color and more sun in the skin, it’s also a character that is so against Tom. I’ve got three older brothers; Draco was an only child. My parents are really lovely with great senses of humor; Draco’s parents were the opposite. So [I enjoy] being known for playing something that is so vastly different from me as a person. It’s a lot more fun to play people that are so far away from you. Early on when I first did U.S. press — this must’ve been for Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban — someone said, “How are you ever going to shake the burden of being known as Draco Malfoy for the rest of your life?” It wasn’t a burden then, and it hasn’t been since.

SE: The hair-bleaching process you describe in the book sounds horrible, by the way.

TF: I know! I’m lucky to have any left [ laughs ]. It was more tedious than it was painful. You’ve got to keep the roots touched up. If they get too long, it’s a nightmare. Lots of times, I was brought in to the studio even when I wasn’t filming, just to get my hair done. What do they call it? Occupational hazard.

SE: I’d like to ask about a couple of your Harry Potter castmates. Emma Watson wrote the foreword to your book, and you write about her quite a bit. Can you share how your friendship evolved over the years and what it’s meant to you?

TF: We quite famously got off on not the best of starts. I was a cocky, little 12-year-old with three older brothers, and she was a very bright-eyed, young first-timer. She asked me what the boom and microphone was for [at the audition]. I sort of snubbed her off, thinking, “Pfft. That’s dumb. It’s a bloody microphone. What do you think it is?” Which maybe helped get me the part. It was something that was very Draco. But we’ve grown up together. We’ve always understood each other. It’s not in the Draco/Hermione fantasy way that some people expect it to be or want it to be, but we’ve always had nothing but love for each other. And like I said, she was very encouraging. She planted the seed of the idea of sharing these stories, [thinking] it might be not just entertainment, but hopefully bring a new dialogue to mental health issues. So, I’ve got nothing but thanks for her.

SE: You also write that of all the people you were surrounded by during the years on the films, it’s Daniel Radcliffe you learned from the most. What did you learn from him?

TF: He’s got a fantastic sense of humor but [is also] endlessly kind and patient. No matter how many times I’ve seen that man be stopped and asked for X, Y, and zed, I’ve never seen him lose his cool. I can only imagine how much more Herculean the weight is on his shoulders than anyone else’s. So, I’ve always admired that. But mostly, it was a hint of envy because he was a bloody good actor, and he got really good quickly. He learned a lot from everyone around us. I think the overall message is that everything trickles down from the top. If No. 1 on the film doesn’t care about it and is a bit lazy, then everyone else gets to relax. Although it was always calm and friendly, he really treated every day like it was important. I learned a lot from his work ethic. I’ve never seen that man half-ass anything. That’s a good quality to have.

SE: You seemed to struggle with fame after the Harry Potter films ended and you were living in Los Angeles. Have you found a way to balance your personal life, your mental health, and your acting career in a healthier way?

TF: It changes by the day, to be honest with you. I think the moment you claim, “I’ve got it figured out now,” it’s like, well, that’s not a good sign. It wasn’t so much Los Angeles or the trappings of fame that were steering me in the wrong direction; I think it was more a case of reminding yourself what makes you personally happy. You know, walking my dog, jumping in the ocean, playing the ukulele, and [not] trying to please everyone, which can get really exhausting. Just try to please yourself; be selfish, in a nice way of the word, if that makes sense. Not be selfish as in “do what makes you look taller around others,” but be selfish in the sense of actually helping people and having time for other people. It makes you feel quite good about yourself.

SE: Speaking of helping people, I liked what you wrote about volunteering in Venice, California, and the positive impact that had on you. I feel like that’s not something we hear about much from celebrities, particularly as it relates to mental health and addiction. How did that experience help you? Do you still volunteer?

Beyond the Wand: The Magic and Mayhem of Growing Up a Wizard

TF: I think the biggest mental health tool for me was caring about someone else. When you’re at your darkest or when you’re at your worst, you find it very, very difficult to empathize and care about others because you’re so wrapped up in your own cyclone. So, the moment that was introduced to me, it was instant. There are lots of things with mental health — well, just life in general — that take lots of work and lots of practice. Meditation, for example: You can’t just click into it; it’s something that you work at. Whereas volunteering just an hour or two a week, doing a very, very simple task, was hugely rewarding.

Venice Beach can be an intimidating place. There’s lots of homeless or artists that choose to live in a certain way, and it could be considered quite frightening. [Volunteering] completely took the veil off of that, because I was offering them something. Literally, it was just a burrito and a bottle of water; it wasn’t like we were changing lives. But doing that gave me a tool that helped me. So, whenever I’m in L.A., I always have that as part of my schedule.

SE: As a former child star, do you have any advice for young actors?

TF: Do it because you love it. I know people who are like, “I really love the idea of being a writer.” They love the idea of being [something], but they don’t actually do it. If you’re waiting for someone to say you’re good at it, then you’re probably in the wrong game. One of the big advantages of doing it from such an early age is that you can’t take anything that seriously when you’re 10 years old because you’re slightly naive. So, every time I go on to a new set or a new scenario, I just try to remind myself to be that 10-year-old and be playful and make everyone else feel comfortable. My dad gave me a great quality, which is buffoonery; the moment that you can make a buffoon out of yourself, it relaxes everyone else’s energy, and then in turn, the acting or the quality of the scene gets better because people aren’t quite so worried. So, stay playful, stay young, have fun.

Midway through a video interview with Tom Felton about his best-selling memoir, “Beyond the Wand,” the actor who played Draco Malfoy in the “Harry Potter” movies removes the blue-gray baseball cap he’d been wearing backward and begins to tousle his hair. He parts it with his fingertips, pats it with a palm, then spikes it up with a swift flick of his wrist. Felton’s locks are darker than they were in his Slytherin days — more sand than platinum — but watching him fidget with his trademark coiffure is a bit like watching Daniel Radcliffe clean his glasses. You feel as if you’re getting a peek behind the scenes at Hogwarts.

“Beyond the Wand,” which debuted at No. 1, is the dishy, chatty result of a decade’s worth of Felton’s scribbling memories of growing up as the youngest of four brothers in Surrey, England (he was known as “runt” and “maggot”), and of the 10 years he spent as a boy wizard. “At a Comic Con, someone would ask me a question and then when I left, my mind would still be racing about that story,” he said. “I’d be compelled to write it down so I don’t forget it. I’m really renowned for losing things, but somehow I’ve managed to keep all these pieces of paper.”

Which of Felton’s revelations will be most surprising to the population known as Potterheads, who make old-school Beatles fans look like paragons of restraint? “I think maybe how much fun we had?” Felton offered. “That and I suppose the big one will be how I got cast as Draco Malfoy. Essentially they asked me which part of the book I was most excited to see in a film and I panicked, knowing full well that I didn’t know anything about the book. So I just said the same thing as the kid next to me and lied — pretty poorly, I imagine, because Chris Columbus, the director, saw straight through my lie. I think that was the first moment that he thought: Draco.” (For the uninitiated, Draco is a cunning and malevolent soul, albeit a gifted magician.)

Felton writes, “I’d like to tell you that the 12-year-old Tom was inspired to squirrel himself away with some Harry Potter books as a result of being involved with the auditions, but he wasn’t. It helped, I think. The filmmakers weren’t so much looking for actors; they were looking for people who were these characters.”

Spoiler alert: Draco Malfoy isn’t all bad; he just grew up surrounded by evil people. And the man who embodied him has some solid advice for the younger generation: “Don’t lie, kids. It’s a good rule of thumb not to lie.”

Peter Frampton is heading out on a massive tour this fall.

The ‘70s icon will begin his “Positively Thankful Tour” on Sept. 8 in North Charleston, S.C. and will wrap up on Sept. 23 in Northfield, Ohio .

While on tour, he will perform in New York City at the Beacon Theatre on Sept. 12 .

The British singer’s tour will be in support of his latest album “Frampton Forgets the Words.”

Frampton recently wrapped up his “Never Say Never Tour” earlier this year, which originally launched in 2023.

There are several presales going on through Ticketmaster , which are set to wrap up on June 27 at 10 p.m.

The general sale for Frampton’s tour will then begin on June 28 at 10 a.m. through Ticketmaster .

If you miss out on the presale and the general sale, then fans can find tickets on secondary market websites, such as Vivid Seats , StubHub , TicketCity and SeatGeek .

The cheapest ticket at the time of publication for his New York City show, before fees, is $109 on SeatGeek .

Hillary Clinton has penned a new memoir that will be published in the lead up to November’s election.

Simon & Schuster will release “Something Lost, Something Gained” in September, supporting it with a book tour that will last into October.

“I can’t wait to hit the road and talk about ‘Something Lost, Something Gained’ with you in person. I hope you can join me for wide-ranging conversations that go behind the scenes and include never-before told stories,” Clinton said in a statement. “We’ll discuss the state of our politics and creating the future we want for our children and grandchildren and, most of all, have some fun while we’re at it!”

Subtitled “reflections on life, love and liberty,” the latest memoir from the former first lady, and U.S. Senator for New York, U.S. Secretary of State and Democratic presidential nominee will offer “her candid views on life and love, politics, liberty, democracy, the threats we face, and the future within our reach,” according to the publisher.

Her tour will begin in Washington, D.C., on Sept. 16 and continue with stops in Boston, San Francisco, Chicago and Seattle.

Clinton has written ten other books, including “What Happened,” published in 2017, about her failed bid for the presidency in 2016.

The former First Lady — who also served as senator from New York and Secretary of State — is set to appear Oct. 7 at Davies Symphony Hall.

The appearance is part of a tour in support of her new book, “Something Lost, Something Gained: Reflections on Life, Love, and Liberty,” which is set to be released by Simon & Schuster on Sept. 17.
