Another week, another victory for Scottie Scheffler.

This time, it's No. 5 on the season, this one coming at Jack Nicklaus' beloved Muirfield Village and the Memorial Tournament.

Scheffler built a big lead early Saturday but a triple bogey on the ninth hole of the third round brought a lot of other world class players back into the mix in another one of the PGA Tour's signature event. Ultimately, however, Scheffler shot 71, then rebounded for a final-round 74 to hold off Collin Morikawa by a shot.

Scheffler earned $4 million for his victory from the overall $20 million purse. Morikawa took home $2.2 million. The U.S. Open is up next at Pinehurst, where Scheffler will be an overwhelming favorite to win his second major of the year and third overall. It's his 11th PGA Tour title and his first as a father, after his son Bennett was born a month ago. He's also the first player to win five times before the U.S. Open since Tom Watson back in 1980.

Back on top: scottie scheffler continues dominant season with 1-stroke victory at the memorial, share this article.

the memorial tour

Having already won this year at the courses famously connected to Arnold Palmer and Bobby Jones, two of the faces that would be etched on the Mount Rushmore of golf, Scottie Scheffler added winning at Jack’s Place, shooting a final-round 2-over-par 74 at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio on Sunday in the 2024 Memorial Tournament . That was enough to hang on for a one-stroke victory, his 11th career PGA Tour title, at the house that Jack Nicklaus built.

“I like it when it gets this hard,” Scheffler said. “I didn’t do a whole lot great today but I did enough to get it done.”

The only other player to win the Arnold Palmer Invitational and Players Championship in March, the Masters in April and the Memorial in June in the same season? In 2001, Tiger Woods, another of the faces on the Mount Rushmore of golf, achieved that feat.

That’s pretty select company. Ahead of the PGA Championship last month, Woods was asked to describe the tremendous run by Scheffler to become the dominant world No. 1 this season. “If he putts awful, then he finishes in the top 10. If he putts decent, he wins. He putts great, he runs away. He’s just that good a ball-striker and that good an all-around player.”

After entering the final round with a four-stroke edge, Scheffler was nursing a one-streak lead before he canned a 16-foot par putt at 16 to stretch his lead to two and despite a rocky finish, he held off Collin Morikawa, who closed in 71, the only player from the final 13 groups to break par, for his fifth top-5 finish this season. Scheffler finished with a 72-hole aggregate of 8-under 280.

“I know he didn’t have his A game on several holes today, like a lot of fellas didn’t have their A games on several holes today, but he put enough of his A game together to win the golf tournament and that’s what it’s all about,” Nicklaus, the 18-time major winner and Memorial tournament host, said.

It marked Scheffler’s third win at a Signature event this season and fifth win in his last eight starts, making him the first to win five times in a season since Justin Thomas seven years ago and the first to win five times before the U.S. Open since Tom Watson in 1980.

Scheffler opened with rounds of 67-68 to claim the 36-hole lead and managed to extend it by a stroke despite a triple-bogey on Saturday and three-putt bogey at 18. He signed for 71. Conditions during the final round remained tough on a sun-drenched day when the blew and turned greens brick hard. With a scoring average of nearly 75 and only six players managing to break par on Sunday, it felt a little too much like the U.S. Open had come one week early.

“Muirfield Village is growling at the players today,” said CBS’s Trevor Immelman.

Scheffler made two bogeys on the front nine and just one birdie – at No. 6 – as Adam Hadwin made an early move before stumbling late and finishing alone in third (74).

“I had put a Band-Aid on the round for a long time,” said Hadwin “and the Band-Aid came off and it was carnage.” As a consolation prize, Hadwin did earn the one spot available into the British Open at Royal Troon in July to the top finisher not already qualified.

Morikawa remained hot on Scheffler’s heels, especially after he drilled a 32-foot birdie putt at the par-3 12 th , his longest putt he had made since the first round of the PGA Championship, a span of 202 holes, to get within one.

Scheffler failed to answer at 12 from closer range, made a nervy short-range birdie stab at 13 and watched in disbelief as his ball spun out on 15. Although he stepped up with the clutch par save at 16, Scheffler left the door open for Morikawa to catch him by missing an 8-foot par putt at 17 to cut his lead in half. But Scheffler made an up-and-down from over the green at 18, pumping his right fist with gusto when his 5-foot putt for the win dropped. Morikawa, who also played in the final group with Scheffler at the Masters in April, had seen this movie before.

Asked what about Scheffler’s game impresses him, Morikawa said, “Everything. The guy could be off balance and the ball’s right down the middle of the fairway. Look, his ball striking is incredible. Growing up, his short game and putting was always amazing, but how good he hits his irons and the control he has is amazing. Distance control is key and it’s king and he’s got that.”

Scheffler topped the field in Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green and Approach-the-Green and his putting qualified as decent enough: he ranked 42nd in Strokes Gained: putting in the final round and 22nd for the week in the 73-man field, lending credibility to Tiger’s assessment of his game. In the end, Scheffler got the traditional winner’s handshake from the legendary Nicklaus that he so desired.

“It would mean a lot to me to be able to shake his hand and win this golf tournament with all the history here and what Mr. Nicklaus has meant to the game,” Scheffler had said earlier in the week.

That wasn’t the only greeting Scheffler received behind the 18th green. Wife Meredith and baby Bennett were there to congratulate him on daddy’s first win as a parent. Between adjusting to being a new dad and the emotional toll of being handcuffed and arrested — charges that have since been dropped — before his second round tee time at the PGA Championship in Louisville last month, Scheffler was happy to be back to the familiarity of trying to chase down another victory.

“It’s been a bit of an emotional roller coaster. I think that’s a pretty accurate description, I think, of what it’s felt like at times,” he said. “Yeah, it’s definitely nice to be sitting here a winner again.”

The Memorial Tournament: Everything You Need to Know

The 18th hole at Muirfield Village during The Memorial

The Memorial Tournament is one of the premier events on the PGA Tour schedule. Founded in 1976 by Jack Nicklaus, the tournament features one of the strongest fields in golf each year and is held at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio, which Nicklaus owns. The tournament is traditionally contested in early June and stands as one of the final tests before players head to the U.S. Open.

As one of three player-hosted invitationals among the PGA Tour's eight Signature Events in 2024, the Memorial will continue to have a 36-hole cut. However, unlike most PGA Tour events, the winner will snatch 20% of the $20 million purse, a $4 million payday, thanks to the event's Signature status. That's an increase over the tour's typical 18% payout to the winner.

The Memorial has been won by a hall-of-fame collection of players over the years, including Nicklaus, Tom Watson, Greg Norman , and Tiger Woods . In addition, some of the games' great young players have won the event, including Patrick Cantlay , Jon Rahm,  Bryson DeChambeau  and most recently, Viktor Hovland. The 2024 Memorial Tournament will be held June 6-9 where Hovland will look to defend his title.

Muirfield Village Golf Club

The 14th hole at Muirfield Village

  • DESCRIPTION The 14th hole at Muirfield Village

Located in the northern suburbs of Columbus, Ohio, Muirfield Village Golf Club has hosted every Memorial Tournament since Roger Maltbie won the inaugural event in 1976. Founded by Nicklaus in 1974, the name is a nod to Muirfield, Scotland, where the Golden Bear won his first British Open in 1966. The neighborhood surrounding Muirfield is very affluent, with homes owned by some of Ohio’s wealthiest individuals.

Since 1974, Nicklaus hasn’t been shy about rebuilding Muirfield. He has made changes to not only appeal to membership, but also challenge tour players in both length and routing. Today, the course plays 7,352 yards from the tips with a 145 slope (par-72).

In addition to incredibly challenging par 3 holes, many spectators are familiar with the finishing hole, which features a massive bowl for people in attendance to watch the final putts. The clubhouse with the iconic clock tower is also one of the hallmarks of Muirfield Village.

The Memorial Cut Line

While five of the PGA Tour's eight Signature Events are doing away with cuts, the Memorial, along with the Arnold Palmer Invitational and the Genesis Invitational, will keep a 36-hole cut as the Signature Event era plants its roots.

Muirfield Village is no pushover, even for PGA Tour pros. Jack Nicklaus sees to its difficulty and heads to the bulldozers if he even senses that scores are trending lower.

Beginning in 2024, the top 50 players and ties, and any player within 10 strokes of the lead, will make the 36-hole cut and advance to the weekend. That's a tweak from the tournament's previous cutline rule, when the top 65 players plus ties made the cut.

The Memorial cut line is usually a few strokes over par, with lowest in the past decade being -2 in 2016. In 2018, the cut line was even par and a whopping 81 players made it to the weekend. Here’s how the cut line has shaken out over recent years.

The Memorial History and Results

As one of the most high-profile tournaments, outside of the four major championships , The Memorial's history and most fascinating facts feature some of the most popular players in golf, past and present.

  • As with many of golf’s records, Tiger Woods owns the record for the most victories at The Memorial with five (1999, 2000, 2001, 2009, 2012).
  • Kenny Perry has three wins at Muirfield Village while Hale Irwin, Greg Norman, Tom Watson, and Patrick Cantlay have each won twice.
  • Tom Lehman’s win in 1994 is the record for the final score to par (-20) and total aggregate score (268).
  • The largest margin of victory comes from Tiger Woods. In 2001 he beat the field by seven shots.
  • Fred Couples had back-to-back second-place finishes in 2004 and 2005, as did David Duval in 1995 and 1996.
  • For most of its time, the tournament has been called The Memorial. The exceptions being Memorial Tournament presented by Morgan Stanley, Memorial Tournament presented by Nationwide, and (current name and title sponsor) Memorial Tournament presented by Workday.
  • In the inaugural event in 1976, Roger Maltbie defeated Hale Irwin in a playoff. On the third playoff hole, Maltbie’s approach shot hit a post near the gallery and wound up on the green. He went on to make par then birdie the next hole to take home the trophy.
  • The Memorial has been decided in a playoff 10 times, most recently in 2023 when Viktor Hovland defeated Denny McCarthy.
  • In 2021, Jon Rahm had to withdraw after 54 holes after he tested positive for COVID-19. Rahm led by six shots and was all but guaranteed a victory the following day.
  • Paul Azinger’s win in 1993 had a flair for the dramatic as he birdied the 72nd hole by draining a bunker shot to edge Corey Pavin by one shot.
  • Tiger’s third round in 2015 is his highest score ever on tour, 85.

Scottie Scheffler wins Memorial with newborn son in attendance

It was the fifth pga tour title of the year for scheffler, and his first as a father., by doug ferguson | associated press • published june 9, 2024 • updated on june 9, 2024 at 7:56 pm.

Winning has become a habit for Scottie Scheffler, except there was nothing typical about his victory Sunday at the Memorial.

He made only one birdie. He closed with a 2-over 74, his highest final round in two years. And victory wasn't assured until Scheffler had the mettle to put a firm stroke on a downhill putt from 5 feet above the hole to take out the break.

It went right in the heart for a one-shot victory over Collin Morikawa, and a handshake with tournament host Jack Nicklaus. Their  exchange  said it all.

“You're a survivor,” Nicklaus told him.

“Thanks,” Scheffler said. “Yeah, you made this place brutal today.”

Scheffler endured more stress than he wanted and got the victory everyone has come to expect, his fifth of the season — one week into the month of June — as he heads for another tough test next week in the U.S. Open.

Muirfield Village was so demanding with its ultra firm greens and swirling gusts throughout the afternoon that only six players broke par and the average score was a fraction under 75.

Scheffler, who started four shots ahead, never lost the lead. He never felt safe, either, not with Morikawa and Adam Hadwin on his heels all afternoon, and on a back nine where making par felt like hard work. Par is what it took on the 18th hole.

“This is a tough place to close out,” Scheffler said. “I didn’t do a whole lot great today, but I did enough.”

Just barely.

Scheffler was leading Morikawa by one shot and both hit approach shots that bounced hard and high off the green and into the rough. Both chipped to about 5 feet. Scheffler buried his putt to win, and the force of his fist pump to celebrate showed how tough this day was on him, and practically everybody.

Making the day even more special was a recent memory with Nicklaus at the Memorial, and cradling month-old son Bennett at his newborn's first PGA Tour event.

Scheffler thought back to 2021, when he missed a 6-foot putt on the final hole that ended any chance of a playoff. Walking off the green, he recalls Nicklaus telling him one day Scheffler will make the putt on 18 “and I'll be walking off to shake his hand.”

“It was pretty special thinking about that as I was walking over to shake his hand," he said.

Morikawa, who played in the final group of both majors this year, holed a 30-foot birdie putt on the par-3 12th hole and stayed on Scheffler's heels the rest of the way. He shot 71, the only one from the final 13 groups to break par.

Adam Hadwin was right there with them until closing with three straight bogeys for a 74 to finish alone in third.

Scheffler finished at 8-under 280 and won $4 million from this signature event and its $20 million purse. That pushes him over $24 million for the year, breaking the PGA Tour season earnings record — and it's barely June — that he set last year in this era of rising purses.

He also become the first player since Tom Watson in 1980 to have won five times on the PGA Tour before the U.S. Open.

That's next week at Pinehurst No. 2, and Scheffler will go to the U.S. Open as a huge favorite. This was his 11th consecutive tournament with a top 10.

Morikawa picked up $2.2 million and now has a big cushion as he tries to sew up the fourth spot for the Americans going to Paris this summer for the Olympics.

Hadwin was within one shot of the lead until finishing the front nine with a pair of bogeys. He stayed in the hunt until closing with a pair of bogeys for a 74. Still, his third-place finish moves him ahead of Corey Conners for the second Canadian spot in the Olympics.

The world ranking after the U.S. Open determines who goes to Paris.

Scheffler had only one birdie — a 10-foot putt on the sixth hole — and he missed two birdie chances inside 10 feet on the back nine that could have provided a cushion.

But he made the biggest one on the par-3 16th.

Scheffler and Morikawa were both short of the super slick green some 90 feet away. Scheffler used putter and hit it weakly, coming up 15 feet short. Morikawa chipped from the collar and also hit a pedestrian chip some 20 feet short.

Morikawa missed his par putt, and Scheffler buried his for a two-shot lead.

Scheffler dropped his final shot on the 17th, however, and he was clinging again to a one-shot lead playing the tough 18th that he ended with one last putt.

Next up is the so-called toughest test in golf, and players felt like they just got finished with one at Muirfield Village.

“You could look at it one of two ways,” Hadwin said. “Either it's good prep for next week or we just got our butts kicked before going into next week.”

For Scheffler it's another victory, his 11th of his career and 12th worldwide. He has finished strong to win big or come from behind. He has pulled away when it was tight at the start. This time, he nearly lost a four-shot lead.

It was his highest closing round since a 74 in the British Open at St. Andrews in 2022. But it goes in the book as another big win against the strongest fields. He now has won three signature events (Bay Hill and Hilton Head were the others) to go along with The Players Championship and his second green jacket at the Masters.

Lesson plan: 9/11 — Ways to reflect on the day’s legacy

The moon rises between the "Tribute in Light" illuminated next to One World Trade Center during 911 anniversary, as seen from Jersey City, New Jersey

The original lesson appeared Sept. 11, 2021, and was updated Sept. 3, 2024.

Introduction

September 11th will remain a day that shaped the course of the nation’s — and the world’s — history. Students in high school and middle school who were not yet born on September 11, 2001, have still grown up in a cultural and political environment that owes much to the actions of the United States in response to 9/11.

The purpose of this lesson is to invite participants to generate and share their own questions about both the day of 9/11 and the larger context of the response that followed, including the U.S. occupation of Afghanistan that is just now ending after two decades.

You can see more stories from the NewsHour examining how this recent history has shaped the nation and the world. These NewsHour pieces will become optional components of the lesson.

Twin Towers September 11th 9/11

A note on teaching hard history:

Most educators can recall exactly where they were and what they were doing when 9/11 unfolded. Today’s generation of students does not share this collective memory, with today’s high school seniors being born a few years after 2001.

Teaching 9/11 on its anniversary has its merits, as does teaching 9/11 within the curricular context of American and global history. We encourage educators to explore the wealth of resources provided in this lesson plan, to examine their own unanswered questions and biases, and to reflect on pedagogical practice before bringing in traumatic and provocative images of 9/11. Check out “Trauma-Informed Teaching Strategies” and consider how you might design lessons that engage with hard history with a trauma-informed lens. Read Learning for Justice's article “Debunking Stereotypes About Muslims and Islam” and incorporate media literacy education as you confront misinformation. In addition, consider doing the following:

  • Preview your expectations or reminding your class about norms
  • Name clearly the topics; create time for participants to reflect and process
  • Teach with a trauma-informed lens
  • Consider the emotional response of your participants and yourself

Warm up activities (5-10 mins):

Note for instructors: Whether you’re teaching about 9/11 on the anniversary of the attacks or as a part of your broader curriculum, starting with the questions participants have can set up an anchor and circular flow (returning to those questions to close out or build upon them in the end). Remind participants to be and stay curious and to practice the skill of writing and developing strong questions.

  • Generate: Participants write as many questions as they can about the September 11 attacks — without stopping to revise, edit, evaluate or answer their questions.
  • Reflect: Then, participants circle or mark their three most important questions — and briefly reflect on why they selected these three.
  • Turn & Talk: Participants turn and share their three questions, noting what may overlap or be different, and have partners share out questions to gauge what participants are curious about. This is also an opportunity to note any misinformation or incorrect assumptions participants may have to clarify & revisit. Read “Debunking Stereotypes About Muslims and Islam” by Learning for Justice to learn more.

Main activities (30-45 mins)

Directions: Choose one or more activity best suited to your class based on the many factors your role as a teacher requires you to know.

  • Watch the 9/11 Memorial Museum’s short film (3 minutes): This video outlines the events on the morning of 9/11. As participants listen, instruct them to watch for any answers to the questions they just constructed. CONTENT WARNING : This video contains images of the Twin Towers and the Pentagon after they are hit.
  • Optional: Take a detour into a robust timeline of the 9/11 attacks using this interactive guide at the 9/11 Memorial & Museum and pair it with this “Historical Timeline of Afghanistan” from PBS NewsHour . Focus on context-building, asking participants to investigate questions, connections and narratives they see represented.
  • Clarify and reflect (5-10 mins): Turning to talk with their partners again (or return to their notebook to write), what did participants notice about the short clip or (timelines) that answered some of their questions?
  • Together with their partner, what new questions can they create? Note: If a participant replies with “I don’t have any questions,” encourage them to practice the skill of questioning and examining what they think, why they think it and what they wonder. Encourage curiosity.
  • Share this infographic with participants. After reviewing, ask participants: What surprises them? Does anything connect to the questions they crafted?

via slideshow — see link at top of lesson

  • Ask participants: What stories do these numbers tell? What stories don’t these numbers tell? (Can invite participants to update their list of questions here, pushing into open-ended questions vs. closed questions.)
  • Watch The 9/11 Memorial & Museum has a trailer (3 minutes) for one of their programs featuring some personal connections individuals have to 9/11.
  • What did you notice, what surprised you, or what do you now wonder after hearing from some individuals who have a personal connection to that day?
  • Now that you’ve reviewed or learned some of the historical context of 9/11, what do you know or wonder about the legacy of 9/11? What impact has the 9/11 terrorist attacks had on the United States? Other countries? Ordinary and everyday people in the United States?
  • Turn & talk: Have participants share some of their ideas, questions and reflections with their partner.
  • Whole group: Invite participants to share any ideas, encourage questions and discuss together.

Part 3 (Choose one or more of the following activities)

Each night this week, PBS NewsHour features stories that examine some of the ways 9/11 transformed the nation and world. Choose one or more of the following available stories to discuss.

A. Watch “American Muslims remember how 9/11 changed America as they knew it” (from 2021 - 10 minutes)

B. Watch “How 9/11 weighs heavily on the generation born after the 9/11 attacks” (3 minutes)

C. Watch “Middletown lost the most residents on 9/11 after NYC. Here’s how the community is healing” (10 minutes)

D. Watch “The direct line between national unity after 9/11 and partisan polarization in 2021” (10 minutes)

Discussion questions : In small groups or as a whole class, discuss the following questions:

Closing (10-15 mins)

Circle back to warm up questions for clarifying and answering the unanswered questions. (Could be collected as an exit ticket or final turn and talk.)

  • Look back over the questions you created at the start of class.
  • What’s one question that has been answered today?
  • What’s a new question you have or are thinking about? What’s left unanswered for you? What are you wondering about?
  • What’s the impact of 9/11 on your generation? What do you predict will be the legacy of 9/11 for future generations?

Extension activities

the memorial tour

Extension 1, Poetry Focus: Days before 9/11, poet Lucille Clifton welcomed a granddaughter into the world and remembers eating lunch on the day itself as she “watched on television the devastation of the Twin Towers.” In her poem “September’s Song: A Poem in Seven Days,” she examines “love and continuing and fear and hope.”

Share this excerpt of Tuesday and Sunday from the longer poem with students , reading aloud together or ask participants to annotate a copy of the poem (or digitally with a partner using this Google Doc). [Note: September 11, 2001, was a Tuesday]

Write in response:

  • Ask participants to write their own day poem connecting to the themes of hope and fear, of love and continuing, mimicking some of Clifton’s style.
  • Do not require participants to write specifically about 9/11. Instead leave the invitation open for them to write about what they choose.
  • Or invite participants to identify vivid imagery, metaphors or symbols in the poem.
  • Compare Clifton’s poem with excerpts from “ With Their Eyes: September 11th — The View From A High School at Ground Zero. ” What word choice evokes an emotional response in the reader? How does the physical structure of the poems impact the way it is read aloud? As writers, what writing moves might participants employ in their own writing?

Extension 2 : In 2021, more than 123,000 Afghan refugees, many fearing for their lives, were evacuated from Afghanistan and were resettled all over the world, including the United States. Thousands of Afghans did not make it out of the country before the U.S. military's departure on Aug. 30. Explore who, what, when, where and how of the refugees arriving in the U.S., and what local community organizations are still working to provide assistance. Read this NewsHour article for more information.

  • Inquire: What do trustworthy and credible charities and organizations look like?
  • Explore: What is being done locally in your area or state?
  • Understand: What don’t you know? What questions do you have?
  • Apply: How could your class, school, or community support and welcome refugees?
  • What are the latest updates as to the Afghan refugees welfare and status in the U.S. and around the world?

Useful app but info not available from other devices

The information on the NPS Park app is very helpful. It contains detailed information about the parks, history, access, parking, lodging, and other amenities. A few areas of improvement would be: 1. to be able to retrieve information saved on one device from another device For example, if you save all the parks that you have visited over the years onto one phone, you can’t retrieve it from a tablet or laptop. On top of which once you get a new phone there’s no way to transfer the information. You have to enter it all over again since there’s no way to retrieve that history. 2. The app has a lot of good information but is not the most intuitive to navigate. Frequently you are told where you can locate information, but there is no link provided to let you go to that page. 3. A note to the NPS developers. While there are buttons on each page that ask whether the page was helpful, there is no place to provide general feedback so that the end-user could provide suggestions.

Awesome start. Hoping for many more features.

Honestly this is one of my favorite apps. Even if I’m not traveling, I like to load the app and explore parks from afar. I love how much love and energy went into this app. It’s obvious that the content comes from people who love the parks as much as we do. Here’s what I’d love to see: Improve offline access: being able to save parks for offline use is awesome. However, the app spends a really long time trying to load when you don’t have internet access before finally giving an error message and then loading after a delay. I wish the app would start in offline mode (offline is default) and then access the internet once the app is loaded. Sort by ability or activity level: I wish I didn’t have to load every single item in a list to see if a trail or thing is ADA accessible. Maybe add an icon to the items on a list… or add a filter. Passport stamp locations: I love this feature. Can the items on this list be clickable? Take me to the entry for that visitors center, so I can find info on accessing it. More pictures: I’m disabled and physical access can be an issue. It’s so cool to be able to see places I’ll never be able to visit. Show me the super advanced hikes I’ll never get to. And show us more wildlife we might have trouble seeing on our visit! I’ve got a million suggestions but you all are busy people. Thanks for making a cool app. Looking forward to updates.

You fixed it!

After the latest update (1.16) the app was no longer opening! It kept crashing but looks like you fixed it! Thank you so very much! It’s a nice build now that’s it’s working again. For everyone out there who was having issues like me, this is what I did to make it work again. I had to completely delete the app and then reinstall it. Unfortunately I lost all my data in the process. That is a bummer and have to start logging all my stops again but it’s worth it. The version is very smooth and doesn’t freeze up anymore! It was worth it. This app is great and so are the people who work on it for us. Also, for those of you who wants your lists back, they are still there, under favorites you can make as many new lists as you like just like before. This app helps tremendously with all your NPS needs and planning. May I remind everyone also that’s it’s free! Safe travels everyone and happy exploring!

Trump Team Clashed With Official at Arlington National Cemetery

The military cemetery said in a statement that federal law prohibits political campaigning on the grounds, and that “there was an incident, and a report was filed.”

  • Aug. 27, 2024

Members of Donald J. Trump’s campaign team and an official at Arlington National Cemetery confronted each other during the former president’s visit to the cemetery on Monday, the military cemetery said in a statement on Tuesday.

The altercation was prompted, according to Trump campaign officials, by the presence of a photographer in a section of the cemetery where American troops who were killed in recent wars are buried. The cemetery released a statement saying that federal law prohibits political campaigning or “election-related” activities within Army cemeteries, including by photographers.

An official with the cemetery tried to “physically block” members of Mr. Trump’s team, Steven Cheung, a Trump campaign spokesman, said in a statement. Mr. Cheung added that the cemetery official was “clearly suffering from a mental health episode” and that the campaign was prepared to release footage of the confrontation to support its account of the clash. The campaign did not provide that footage after several requests.

Chris LaCivita, a top Trump campaign adviser, added in a separate statement that the cemetery official was “a disgrace and does not deserve to represent the hallowed grounds of Arlington National Cemetery.”

Cemetery officials did not provide their own account of the encounter, saying instead that “there was an incident, and a report was filed.” In an additional statement on Wednesday, a spokeswoman for the cemetery said that “to protect the identity of the individual involved, no further information about the incident is being released at this time.”

The cemetery added that it had “reinforced and widely shared” to the Trump campaign the federal laws prohibiting campaign activities by photographers “or any other persons attending for purposes, or in direct support of a partisan political candidate’s campaign.”

News of the altercation was first reported by NPR.

VoteVets, the liberal veterans group, called on Mr. Trump to fire the members of his team involved in the confrontation.

Mr. Trump had visited the cemetery for a wreath-laying ceremony honoring 13 American troops who were killed in a suicide bombing at Abbey Gate at the airport in Kabul, Afghanistan, during the United States’ withdrawal from that country three years ago. Mr. Trump has blamed President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris for the bombing and America’s chaotic withdrawal, and repeated his attacks on the subject in campaign events after his visit to the cemetery.

Mr. Trump had laid three wreaths at the Tomb of the Unknowns in Arlington National Cemetery on Monday morning, the third anniversary of the Abbey Gate bombing. Two of the wreaths were for Marines killed: Staff Sgt. Darin Taylor Hoover and Sgt. Nicole Gee. A third was dedicated to all 13 troops killed.

Mr. Trump was accompanied for the laying of the wreaths by family members of the slain troops, as well as Sgt. Tyler Vargas-Andrews and Corporal Kelsee Lainhart , two Marines who were injured in the Abbey Gate attack. Sergeant Vargas-Andrews lost his right arm and left leg in the attack, and Corporal Lainhart was paralyzed in the attack and now uses a wheelchair.

Mr. Trump then accompanied the families and Marine veterans to Section 60 of the cemetery, reserved for those recently killed in America’s wars abroad, including at Abbey Gate.

That part of Mr. Trump’s visit was private and closed to the press. Mr. Cheung, the Trump campaign spokesman, pointed to a screenshot of an email that he argued gave the campaign photo access to Section 60. That excerpt, however, says that “former President Trump may have an official photographer and/or videographer outside of the main media pool,” but it does not suggest Mr. Trump’s photographer was given special access.

The campaign also shared text messages from family members of the veterans consenting to having Mr. Trump’s campaign media attend the event at Section 60. The campaign did not provide evidence that the cemetery gave them permission to have a photographer at Section 60 — which the cemetery said in its statement would be a violation of federal law.

Gov. Spencer J. Cox, Republican of Utah — who visited the cemetery with Mr. Trump — shared a photo from Section 60 on social media, with Mr. Trump and others in a “thumbs-up” pose around the grave of Staff Sergeant Hoover.

Germany’s Felix Wolter and Poland’s Adrianna Sulek-Schubert lived up to expectations as the pre-event favourites for the Wiesław Czapiewski Memorial as they claimed victories at the World Athletics Combined Events Tour Gold meeting in the Polish town of Naklo nad Notecia on Sunday (1).

Wolter scored a meeting record of 8068 after being pushed all the way by Japan’s Yuma Maruyama and Estonia’s Risto Lillemets, both of whom also scored in excess of 8000 points.

Sulek-Schubert, meanwhile, retained her title from 2022 with 6007 to win comfortably from Ukraine’s Yuliya Loban.

Wolter led from the outset, clocking 10.63 in the 100m and leaping 7.64m in the long jump, the best marks of the day for those disciplines. His opponents made a dent on his lead in the shot put as the German managed 13.49m while Zsombor Galpal topped the event with 15.09m.

A 1.94m leap in the high jump kept Wolter in the lead ahead of Czechia’s Vilem Strasky and Maruyama, then he ended the first day with a 48.39 victory in the 400m to increase his lead to 120 points.

Wolter started the second day with a 14.52 run in the 110m hurdles, an event in which Lorenzo Naidon (14.12) and Maruyama (14.20) produced the fastest times.

Lithuania’s Edgaras Benkunskas, the strongest thrower in the field, topped the discus with a PB of 49.89m, while Wolter managed 44.06m. Lillemets then climbed up the leader board into fifth after clearing 5.00m in the pole vault with Wolter – still the overall leader – vaulting 4.70m and Maruyama managing 4.80m.

Benkunskas, Lillemets and Maruyama all threw beyond 60 metres in the javelin to make a small dent on Wolter’s lead. But his 56.43m throw kept him in pole position going into the 1500m.

Naidon was the fastest in the final discipline (4:31.99) and he was closely followed by Lillemets (4:32.24) and Maruyama (4:36.59) but Wolter did enough to hold on to his lead (4:43.61), ending with a score of 8068.

Maruyama scored 8021 for second place, just ahead of Lillemets (8012).

Like Wolter, Sulek-Schubert led the heptathlon from start to finish.

The European indoor silver medallist opened with a 13.44 victory in the 100m hurdles and then cleared 1.77m, the best of the day, in the high jump.

Yuliya Loban produced the best throw in the shot put, 14.86m, but Sulek-Schubert’s 13.75m kept the Pole in the lead. Sulek-Schubert then increased her leading margin to 166 points at the end of the first day thanks to a 24.28 victory in the 200m.

Sulek-Schubert and Loban produced the exact same mark in the long jump, 5.79m, then the Ukrainian out-threw Sulek-Schubert in the javelin by almost five metres, 42.22m to 37.81m, but it wasn’t enough to displace the leader.

A 2:16.95 run in the 800m sealed the victory for Sulek-Schubert, giving her a winning score of 6007. Loban was second with 5861.
