It was beautiful and our tour leader Jack was very informative, telling many stories along the way. I would perhaps just add a couple of more beauty stops on day 1 to take photos ( maybe skip one of the dams). Accommodation was excellent. Certainly a full on tour

What people love about cotswolds tours.

Neil was an excellent tour director/driver. His local knowledge as we passed thru villages was very helpful in understanding how Wales 'works'. I liked the late start in the mornings-9a.m., and the fact that we stayed for 2 nights in 2 locations. I would have liked the opportunity to walk in Snowdoniia
This tour was excellent. Derek was a very entertaining tour guide & our driver had a great sense of humour. I highly recommend travelling with Tour Rad.
We just returned from our trip around the British Isles and we loved it but to give credit to Greg who made the tour extra special. I cannot imagine a tour guide as good as Greg. From his use of music to set the mood and the veritable treasure trove of facts. I really enjoyed our stops in the pubs. And for someone with physical issues I really appreciated the luggage delivered to our hotel rooms. At the start and end of the day Greg addressed all the tour group if any questions arose. Then when several members of the tour started coughing he was Jonny on the spot with sprays and disinfectants. The tour could have been improved by skipping Inverness as it had our least favorite room and while my wife and I think most meals lacked flavour the kitchen at the hotel took the cake for poorest food. Also the floor in our room and the dining hall could have used a good vacuum. I must give a shout out to Lee our driver who was the epitome of smooth!

How do I get to the Cotswolds?

There are several ways to travel to the Cotswolds regardless of where in the United Kingdom you travel from.

One of the main ways, and perhaps the easiest way, to travel to the Cotswolds is via the British Rail network. Trains run to the Cotswolds from London and other areas of England, with rail stations in major towns in the Cotswolds, including Moreton-in-Marsh and Cheltenham.

You can also drive to the Cotswolds via the national motorway network.

Y ou can fly into Birmingham or Bristol airports, rent a car and make the 1-1.5 hour drive to the Cotswolds.

How do I get around the Cotswolds?

Getting around the Cotswolds is relatively easy, thanks to England's excellent public transportation network and infrastructure.

If you've driven to the Cotswolds, getting around the region is straightforward, with easy-to-navigate streets and signed motorways.

You can also use the British Rail network, with numerous lines connecting major towns in the Cotswolds.

The bus network is another form of transportation you can use, with many local bus services that travel to and from various towns within the region.

What is the weather like in the Cotswolds?

The weather in the United Kingdom is primarily rainy and overcast for most of the year, and the temperature in the Cotswolds is no different.

That's not to say the weather in the Cotswolds never gets warm or sunny because it does (especially in Summer). However, the region is more likely to experience cold temperatures.

What do I pack for the Cotswolds?

What to pack for your trip to the Cotswolds depends on what season you're going in.

It can get quite warm in the Summer, so items like T-shirts, dresses, shorts, skirts, and pants are all suitable. However, you still want to pack a cardigan or a light jacket because the temperatures can be cooler in the evenings.

If you travel in Winter, it's best to pack clothes that keep you nice and warm - think scarves, gloves, coats and thick jackets.

No matter what season you're traveling in, it's also wise to pack an umbrella, as rainfall can occur throughout the year.

What are the best restaurants in the Cotswolds?

There are several excellent restaurants to enjoy a meal at in different towns across the Cotswolds. While the Cotswolds are known to have some of the best pubs, you can also feast on various other cuisines, including restaurants that serve delicious seafood and Italian dishes.

Here are some of our favorites:

  • The Bell Inn, Langford
  • The Feathered Nest, Nether Westcote
  • Ox Barn at Thyme, Southrop Manor Estate
  • The Coconut Tree, Cheltenham
  • The Porch House, Stow-on-the-Wold

tours through cotswolds

I can honestly say that it was the best vacation of my life! We loved every minute of it and with your planning it went without a hitch! We did manage to get turned around twice during the walk, which we put down to our own error by misreading the map instructions, but were easily able to get back on track. All of the accommodations provided friendly owners, great breakfasts and locations.

We just came back from a 4 day hiking trip of the Cotswolds Triangle. We had a fantastic time! Everything was very well organised and attention was paid to every single detail (e.g. luggage tags, a plastic cover for our booklet with directions, good suggestions for wining and dining). Communication with the company leading up to our trip, also went very smoothly. I would definitely use Cotswolds Walks again and would highly recommend it to anyone who wishes to explore the beautiful Cotswolds.

We all agreed that we had a wonderful time in the Cotswolds and thank you so much for making it a very special holiday.  Our days were planned so well and it was nice to have everything taken care of ahead of time for us.  You live in a special part of the world and it was a great experience to visit it.  A big thank you to Robert as well - such a pleasure to walk around with him for a couple of days.

My wife and I were initially circumspect for the need of such detail your guide provided and we laughed at the thought and at some of the guide’s vocabulary, but a chance meeting with an American couple the night before our first day on the Walk quickly dispelled any doubt. They had just used your services for their Walk and said to follow the guide and we wouldn’t go wrong. We did, and they were right! Again, thank you for taking good care of us.

Your Itinerary

Arriving into Chippenham railway station, our friendly local guides will transfer you straight into the Cotswolds to begin the tour. Travelling via the picturesque Castle Combe, we enjoy lunch at The Castle Inn and hike between some of the region’s best unknown villages. Leaving the tourist trail well and truly behind, we meet a local dry stone walling expert, before ending our day with dinner at the glamorous Brasserie at our first hotel, Lucknam Park.

Today we walk from Ashwicke to the Roman city of Bath, meandering along the canal before spending the afternoon exploring this ancient city with a local expert. From the Roman Baths, one of the world’s best-preserved Roman remains, to the Royal Crescent overlooking the city, we’ll ensure you see all this historic location has to offer. With the day drawing to an end, we journey back to Lucknam Park for a spot of wine tasting and a Michelin star dining experience at Hywel Jones.

Travelling north through the Cotswolds, today’s itinerary takes us to the Slad Valley, where we follow in Laurie Lee’s footsteps as we traverse this beautiful hideaway. After lunching at an award-winning local pub, we spend the afternoon tracing our way to Painswick, ‘The Queen of the Cotswolds’, where we’ll find our next luxurious hotel.

This morning we transfer to Cheltenham for a hike around Cleeve Hill to Belas Knapp, before lunching at The Lion Inn in Winchcombe. From here, we visit Sudley Castle, where we learn about its 1,000 years of fascinating heritage and the pivotal role it has played in English history. We then enjoy dinner at The Falcon Inn before spending another night at the Painswick Hotel.

Heading across the country, we spend our final day exploring Oxford. Beginning with a local walking tour of the city’s most unusual hidden gems, we then tread the historic hallways of Oxford University’s famous collages, before enjoying a champagne punting race along the Thames. In the evening, we enjoy one last dinner together and relax in the sumptuous Old Parsonage Hotel.

With a heavy heart, this morning we bid farewell. Our Active England guides will escort you to Oxford railway station, where you’ll be able to easily catch a direct train to London. Wherever your journey takes you next, though, we’ll provide any assistance you might need with your onward travel.

Carbon footprint.

What’s the Number? Nearly everything has a carbon footprint. Together with ecollective, we’ve measured the carbon impact of not only every tour we operate but our entire business. We’ve taken into account greenhouse gas emissions across the business including office, travel, website, vehicles, accommodation, activities, food, suppliers…

What does the number mean? We’re going to improve this by measuring and reducing our footprint each year. That means working with our suppliers to make changes that have a more positive impact on us and the planet. What does this look like in reality?

  • Redesign trips to reduce our carbon impact
  • Working closely with all our suppliers across England to join us on our decarbonisation journey
  • Switching up our vehicle fleet to electric
  • Investing in projects that permanently remove carbon from the atmosphere for any emissions that remain.

We’ve got a long way to go but we’re on our way to net-zero We’re committed to reducing our impact on the planet and working towards a sustainable future. We’ve taken ownership of our carbon footprint and are on a mission to reduce our emissions year on year.

There are different categories of accommodation available from B&B accommodation to Village Inns to small & luxury hotels. Ensuite rooms are booked where possible, in some B&B’s a private bathroom may be necessary.

B&B accommodation is generally in guesthouses, often private residences where some of the rooms are used for guests. They are also often smaller in size than Inns or hotels. All of our selected B&Bs will give you a warm welcome with a hearty breakfast for you in the morning. Because these are often private residences, there may not be the facilities you would expect to find in dedicated accommodation establishments. And they do not generally have options for dining in the evening.

Village Inns are generally larger, they may cater for only guests or they may also be a pub which also has guest rooms. They generally tend to have more in the way of facilities and have some kind of bar or dining options and are generally larger establishments than B&B’s

Hotels are usually the biggest of the establishments that we use and are more dedicated just to accommodation than B&B’s or Inns. There is a wide variety of hotels in The Cotswolds ranging from small hotels, to hotels with restaurants, to award winning luxury hotels.

WELCOME TO COTSWOLDS TRAVEL

The cotswolds, located just 2 hours west of london, is undoubtedly one of the most scenic parts of england..

Where the river Thames begins and history is woven in wool, the Cotswolds is one of the most gentle and picturesque of English landscapes.  No area of comparable size in Britain has more enchanting small towns and villages than the Cotswolds. Little appears to have changed – the Roman roads still run as straight as ever, the magnificent churches, built with the wealth of the mediaeval wool trade, still dominate the countryside; picture-book villages, framed in the local honey-coloured limestone, shelter unobtrusively in peaceful valleys made by crystal-clear streams.

In this remote, rural backwater and across the rolling hills, fields edged by warm dry-stone walls become a sea of corn in summer when the village gardens abound in fragrant honeysuckle, rambling rose, towering hollyhock, delicate clematis and the ever-present wisteria. Life is still lived at a gentle, unhurried pace.  Here you can discover little market towns that were once important Roman cities and sleepy villages that were once alive with the cottage weaving industry based on the Fleece. It is hard to imagine a place more tranquil than the Cotswolds.

Life seems to pass by almost without touching. As you meander through the villages and stroll around the peaceful Cotswold towns slumbering contentedly in the valleys, through streets not built with the motor car in mind, you could be forgiven for thinking that here is not quite part of the 21 st century.  MORE >>

The Cotswolds covers a huge area – almost 800 square miles – and runs through five counties (Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire, Warwickshire, Wiltshire and Worcestershire). One of the delights of visiting the Cotswolds is exploring the different areas, each with its own identity, yet all with those defining Cotswold features: golden stone and rolling hills, the ‘wolds’.

Rhona from Macs in the Cotswolds

Today you will arrive in Moreton-on-Marsh located at the head of the beautiful Evenlode Valley. This  thriving market town has just one main street which is lined with shops and galleries.

Perhaps you would like to arrive on a Tuesday as this is when Moreton-on-Marsh is host to the largest open-air street market in the Cotswolds. Also of interest is the White Hart Royal Hotel, a former manor house that sheltered King Charles I during the Civil War.

For dinner tonight there are plenty of restaurants from which to choose.

Redesdale Arms

Redesdale Arms Hotel is a 17th-century coaching house which has a contemporary decor with stylish bedrooms and you can enjoy log fires in the winter and a patio garden in the summer. The rooms are spread between the original main house, dating back to 1650, and to the rear of the building in the original stable block or courtyard. Two of their rooms feature whirlpool baths and many have spacious walk-in showers. All the rooms are equipped with Digital TV, CD players and new king-size beds. The restaurant has an AA Rosette award and the menu boasts good quality produce including local game and vegetables, and Cornish seafood.

whitehartroyal

The White Hart Royal, with individually designed bedrooms, is a historic 17 th century coaching inn. All bedrooms have complimentary tea and coffee making facilities, mineral water and biscuits. From the revenue the hotel receives they donate the cost of a new baby tree to the local woodland trust. In this way they not only contribute towards a great local ’green’ cause, they also provide guests with the feel good factor of knowing that having an overnight stay here a little tree will grow!

Acacia Guest House

Acacia Guesthouse is a small B&B in Moreton in Marsh. All rooms are equipped with flat screen tv's,, free wi-fi, tea/coffee making facilities, clock radio alarms, use of ironing board facilities, and hairdryer. Dorothy and Michael will cater for your every need with freshly soured local products for that homely breakfast. Just off the high street there is a choice of local restaurants to choose from for your evening meal.

The cycling route today takes you through pretty rural routes, and initially to the town of Chipping Norton. The town’s name means “market town north”  and began as a small settlement at the foot of a hill on which there was a motte and Bailey Castle. Just north of the town you will cycle past the Rollright Stones, a complex of three Neolithic and Bronze Age monuments. They are now known as the Kings Men, the King Stone and the Whispering Knights and were all built at different times during the late prehistoric age.

Continue on your route through quaint villages, such as Little Compton and Paxton, before arriving back into Moreton-on-Marsh.

Today’s loop takes you to the west of Moreton-on-Marsh and through Upper and Lower Brailes situated in the county of Warwickshire and in the northern part of the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Expect some hilly terrain today as the Brailes are surrounded by small hills. Brailes derives from a Saxon word for wood, and in the Domesday book was described as an important manor. You then cycle through more pretty villages with stone farms, cottages and gardens overflowing with flowers en route.

Todays route takes you through some of the most iconic Cotswold countryside and villages. Upon leaving Moreton-on-Marsh your route takes you close to Sezincote House, built with an Indian influence, and inspiration for the architect of the Brighton Pavilion. The house is set within a romantic water garden and it is definitely worth stopping to stroll through the house and gardens.

Continue on until you reach the twin villages of Upper and Lower Slaughter. The name is derived from the old English “slohtre”, which means a muddy place. The epitome of Cotswold charm, these villages should not be missed and you will enjoy spending time here exploring.

After this visit you now concentrate on getting some miles under your belt. The route to Broadway takes you through undulating countryside and to Snowshill. Here, if you have time, it is worth stopping at Snowshill House and its Arts and Crafts style terraced gardens.

Olive Branch Guest House

Olive Branch, a grade II listed building, has been trading as a Guest House for nearly 70 years. It has the reputation of being a warm and friendly, family run 'home from home' with many guests returning year after year. All rooms have colour TV, tea/coffee making facilities, and hair dryers. Wifi is also available. The owner's comfortable lounge is available for you to relax in after a day’s walking. Breakfast is served in the Cotswold stone dining room with Inglenook fireplace and original flagstone floor. You will be treated to the delights of Pam’s home baking and David’s delicious English breakfast.

The Broadway Hotel

The Broadway Hotel, served over 400 years ago as a rural retreat still offers a feeling of tranquillity to be enjoyed by today’s visitors. The bedrooms are individually furnished, warm and inviting, with attention to detail in every bedroom. Each of the nineteen guest rooms have a flat-screen TV, beverage tray, hairdryer and en-suite bathrooms generously stocked with complimentary Molton Brown products. The Tattersalls Brasserie is in the beautiful new Atrium, the elegant, light filled brasserie offers an extensive a la carte menu with a good selection of fresh and seasonal dishes along with a choice of 31 day dry aged free range steaks.

russells

Russell’s is one of the chicest places to stay and eat in Broadway, it's situated in the former showroom of Sir Gordon Russell’s furniture. Above the restaurant are seven individually designed bedrooms, all with en-suite bathrooms, luxury bedlinen and air conditioning. Flat screen televisions, broadband internet access and original architectural features all combine to create a supremely comfortable experience.

Today there are a few different options to choose from. The first is to take a 43 mile bike ride that takes you in a loop from Broadway to Stratford-upon-Avon and back. If you take this cycle ride you will probably arrive in Stratford around lunchtime, and you will have a little time to explore this town, famous as the birthplace of William Shakespeare.

The second option is a shorter ride of around 23 miles in the morning. This route takes you through Chipping Camden, a charming and historic town, once famous for its wool trade. This afternoon perhaps you would like to take a bus into Stratford to see where The Bard was born and explore.

The third option is to take a day of rest. Broadway is a really picturesque town to stroll through and perhaps you may wish to search out some antique and book shops, or have lunch in a tea room or local pub. You may also take the bus into Stratford-upon-Avon if you wish.

The route today takes you on a loop to the south and west of Broadway. Head out of town to the west and along pretty country lanes to Elmley Castle, a small village and where the ruins of the castle remain. Continue through the charming villages of Ashton under Hill, Alderton and Gretton.

Just south of Broadway is Stanway, a scenic village and where it is worth stopping to see Stanway Manor House and Gardens. Explore this outstanding Jacobean Manor House and the 18th century water gardens, the finest in all of England.

Arrive back in Broadway for your final evening. With plenty of restaurants and pubs to choose from, perhaps you would like to have a final dinner and a toast to celebrate your week of wonderful cycling.

A transfer will be provided back to Moreton-on-Marsh train station, from where you may complete your onward journey. If you are renting a bike it will be collected from your accommodation. If you have your own bike and have driven to the start point you will need to cycle back to Moreton-on-Marsh on this final morning. It is 9 miles on the main road and slightly further if you wish to cycle along quieter and more scenic roads.

I visited the 'Game of Thrones' studio 5 years after the series finale. The $37 tour reminded me why I love the show.

  • I recently visited the Game of Thrones Studio Tour in Northern Ireland for $37.
  • It offers an exclusive look at the HBO series , which spent millions of dollars on each episode.
  • Even five years after the series finale, the studio is still a worthwhile experience for fans.

Insider Today

It's been five years since the series finale of HBO's "Game of Thrones," but I'm as big a fan as ever.

When a work trip took me to Northern Ireland , I knew I had to detour to the Game of Thrones Studio Tour. By season eight, the HBO drama was spending $15 million per episode , and like any true fan, I wanted a behind-the-scenes look at where some of that money went — and what made the show so visually incredible.

The tour, located in one of the show's original filming locations , Linen Mill Studios, opened in 2022, and standard tickets cost £29.50, or about $37.

I wanted to see just how relevant the studio is today — especially in the lead-up to the new season of the "House of the Dragon" prequel series in June — and if the widespread passion of the fandom is still alive.

It felt like the studio was hidden in plain sight.

tours through cotswolds

There's no onsite parking at the studio, so getting there felt like being escorted to some secret location. Luckily, the instructions were clear: Meet at The Boulevard, a large shopping district in Banbridge, Northern Ireland.

From there, a complimentary shuttle took me down a long, formal-looking driveway. It's easy to see how the studio remained low-key during its filming heyday — it's almost as if it's hidden in plain sight.

My excitement overflowed as I stepped off the bus to blasting theme music and a massive Game of Thrones Studio Tour sign. About 10 other visitors immediately began posing for photographs.

After the 10-minute shuttle ride, it took me a good five minutes to reach security and start the experience, but the atmosphere was already infectious. Even the staff seemed genuinely excited to greet me.

The impressive theming immediately drew me in.

After passing a dragon skull and armored "guard," the tour started with a green-screen photo while we waited for some dramatic doors to swing open.

A tour guide quickly explained the studio rules — mostly, no touching the exhibits (which were used during filming) and absolutely no photos of the pre-tour movie.

I won't spoil too much, but the short film gave me goosebumps. At the end, the screen parted, and we entered the studio from "beyond the wall."

The studio clearly takes immersion seriously.

tours through cotswolds

On the other side of the screen, we were blasted by fog machines before standing toe-to-toe with the Wildlings. Everything was incredibly immersive.

This was one of my favorite rooms. It had elaborate costumes from the show , including coats laden with bones and oysters. I learned that some weighed up to 15 pounds.

I also caught a glimpse of Wun Wun — or, at least, the costume that 7-foot-1 Ian Whyte wore during filming. It supposedly took the actor three to five hours a day to transform into the giant.

It was fun to walk through the different memorable sets.

tours through cotswolds

The studio is made up of a trail of set rooms, including Mess Hall in Castle Black, the Crypts of Winterfell, King's Landing, and the Great Hall of Winterfell.

Costumed mannequins stood in each room to mimic the real scenes from the show.

I learned a lot about the making of the show throughout the tour.

tours through cotswolds

In addition to walking through the sets, I got an insight into the show's creation process.

The 30-foot dragon skull of Balerion the Black Dread took six weeks to make before being shipped to Spain for filming. While standing next to the masterpiece, I could hardly believe that something of its scale could be transported across Europe .

Equally staggering, we learned that the crew went through 52,000 bags of fake snow and 163 tons of propane (for pyrotechnic effects) throughout the series.

Hearing about these intense behind-the-scenes efforts brought the series' magic back to life and made the visit worthwhile for me.

Behind-the-scenes exhibits and interactive experiences made the experience even better.

tours through cotswolds

Other rooms were dedicated to the show's costume design , music creation, and set design. There was even a sword display room that housed famous props like Arya's Needle.

I'd nearly forgotten about the significance of the show's many props before embarking on the tour. But I almost squealed at Jaime Lannister's golden hand.

There were activities throughout the tour, too, including adding your face to the Hall of Faces and creating your own sigil.

I was entranced up until the very end of the experience.

tours through cotswolds

The tour finished at the Iron Throne, a dragon flitting behind the rubble on a digital back wall.

It was a fitting endpoint seeing as it was the location where Jon killed Daenerys, controversially culling her brewing tyranny and ending the series.

I don't think the "Game of Thrones" buzz is going to die down anytime soon.

tours through cotswolds

The studio wasn't packed, but Northern Ireland tends to be a little quieter in February and busier during the Easter holiday and summer. Honestly, I was grateful I missed the heavier crowds.

Overall, the "Game of Thrones" fandom seems to be building momentum rather than slowing down — especially with the second season of "House of the Dragon" looming.

I saw plenty of visitors bringing their children, too, so love for the series seems to be getting passed down to the next generation.

Initially, £29.50 seemed steep to me. But comparably, it's cheap for a studio tour — the Harry Potter Studio Tour in London charges a base price of £53.50.

Plus, I thought it offered great value. It packed so much in and the staff's passion is evident, which makes all the difference for visitors.

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The 36-hole cut at the Masters is different than any other major championship. The 89-man field will be cut to the low 50 and ties after 36 holes is completed.

Thursday’s first round was suspended due to darkness after the start of play was delayed more than two hours by morning storms. The second round is expected to begin on schedule at 8 a.m., however.

The cut was first instituted in 1957, 23 years after the Masters began. The field was cut to the low 40 and ties from 1957-61, but the cut changed the next year with the institution of the 10-shot rule. From 1962-2012, the field was cut to the low 44 and ties, as well as anyone within 10 strokes of the leader.

Over the following seven years, the 36-hole cut was expanded to the low 50 and ties, as well as anyone within 10 strokes of the leader. The 10-shot rule was done away with in 2020, however, and now the low 50 and ties qualify for the final 36 holes at the Masters.

Where Are New York’s Best Acoustics? We Took a Listening Tour.

The composer Michael Gordon and members of Mantra Percussion tested the piece “Timber” in resonant spaces around the city. Here is what they learned.

In the foreground a pair of percussive mallets and a wooden board. But the focal point of the picture is a man in a baseball cap and a down jacket. Behind him there are arches and you see a T-Mobile store.

By Joshua Barone

As three people struck wood with mallets under a viaduct in Queens during the morning rush hour one day in the fall, a man walked up and asked, “What do you call this music?” The players could have told him the title of the piece, Michael Gordon’s “Timber,” or given him some idea of the genre. But one, Caitlin Cawley, simply said, “Percussion.”

Cawley and her colleagues from the ensemble Mantra Percussion were at the viaduct, which runs along Queens Boulevard and under the 7 train, to test the sound of its vaulted ceiling. It was part of a project to perform “Timber,” an hourlong work from 2009, in man-made sites with idiosyncratic acoustics around New York City.

The result, called Resonant Spaces , begins on Sunday, with performances at three locations, followed by three more on April 21. In addition to the viaduct, they include Castle Clinton and Federal Hall in Lower Manhattan, and in Brooklyn, archways in Prospect Park and Dumbo, and a monument in Fort Greene Park. The free concerts will allow the public to hear New York the way percussionists do: as a limitless source of musical opportunity.

“Timber” was originally written for the Dutch group Slagwerk Den Haag. Six percussionists struck amplified two-by-fours — a take on simantras, planks of wood shaped to create specific tones, which have a history of being used in the Eastern Orthodox Church.

In the early performances of “Timber,” the simantras were made from pine, but Mantra Percussion has taken a different route. Michael McCurdy, a member, said that the score didn’t specify the wood. “When you are learning Xenakis , or anything,” he said, “when the composer says ‘wood block,’ the variety of sounds that can come from that instrument is vast.’”

For Resonant Spaces, “Timber” will be played with purpleheart — a wood so dense, McCurdy said, that the Mantra players exhausted and had to replace a circular saw for cutting the pieces. On that fall morning, he, Cawley and Joseph Bergen carried their boards and other equipment from location to location, on the subway and in rideshare cars, as they tested sites for the concerts to see where the piece would thrive.

They allowed me to join with a photographer, and to record audio at each stop.

Queens Boulevard Viaduct

Gordon described the viaduct’s grandly arched space as “really acoustically wild, almost fantastic.” As the players tested fragments of “Timber,” the sound ricocheted off the ceiling, shooting in all directions.

Under the Queens Boulevard viaduct

They tried different configurations — setting up their mounted boards close together, or far apart, in the center of the vaulted space or at the edge of it — as passers-by stopped to listen or interact with them. One woman wanted to give Cawley some cash.

Gordon was curious about a spot near the subway entrance, with a lower, flat ceiling. The sound wasn’t as spectacular, but the performance still caught the attention of a man who said with astonishment: “It’s wood. I’m walking over here wondering what’s going on, but it’s just wood. That’s astounding.”

After a brief pause, Gordon looked at him and, like any good New Yorker, said, “You know that you’re wearing a Red Sox hat, right?”

Endale Arch

After a car ride from Queens, the group arrived at the entrance of Prospect Park, and walked to the Endale Arch. The short tunnel, strikingly lined with alternating panels of pine and walnut, is one of the original architectural features from the park’s creation more than 150 years ago.

Under the Endale Arch

Under the arch, while runners, confused and frightened dogs, and school groups passed, Gordon and the Mantra players tried the most configurations of any location they visited that day. They found that the sound could be severe, but better if they let it reflect off one of the tunnel’s brick nooks, and best if they spaced out the instruments, especially at either entrance. McCurdy smiled as he asked the others whether they could hear overtones emerging from the resonance.

“It was a little harsh and loud,” Gordon said of the space. “It was amplifying the sound and also bringing out the bright overtones.” Milder, he added, was an area of Fort Greene Park in front of the Prison Ship Martyrs’ Monument, where the Mantra musicians had previously played “Timber.” (They will be back there on April 21). “That,” Gordon said, “is not particularly loud or reverberant, but it’s much more subtle and kind of beautiful.”

Federal Hall

The group then hauled its equipment onto the 2 train, getting out at the Wall Street stop to test the rotunda of Federal Hall, the first home of the U.S. Congress and the site of George Washington’s swearing in as president.

Inside Federal Hall

On the way, the percussionists played in the subway exit — a tinny corridor lined with tile — as well as in Kevin Roche’s postmodern lobby of 60 Wall Street (now closed for renovation and likely demolition), before arriving at Federal Hall. There was a school group visiting, and the children began to gather around the trio as they played. Afterward, the students asked to try for themselves, and took turns striking the wood.

Of the day’s stops, the rotunda was the most naturally reverberant. “It was so thick with reverb and delay that you could hardly make out what they were playing,” Gordon said. “The distinction was almost completely lost. The sound is bouncing off the walls and off the floor, and it just doesn’t stop. You’re just really drenched in sound.”

Bethesda Terrace

From there, it was back to the subway and up to the Upper West Side for a stop at Central Park, where the musicians made their way to the arcade under Bethesda Terrace. When they arrived, they had competition, not so much from the wedding party shuffling around for a photo shoot or the children’s entertainer making large bubbles, but from other musicians: Cover Story Doo-Wop , an ensemble of four vocalists and a bass player that had attracted a large audience.

Inside the Bethesda Terrace Arcade

But after being offered cash and cutting a deal for the Mantra players to be quick, Cover Story took a break and stood the side while the percussionists set up their instruments and got started. This heavily trafficked area of the park offered the most passers-by yet, but also the most indifferent ones; few stopped to listen, and no one stopped for conversation.

Gordon and the Mantra musicians decided not to perform in Central Park. It seemed chaotic, Gordon said, and he got the impression that they “were not going to get the feeling or the focus of people who actually showed up and wanted to hear it.”

AFTER A DAY of hearing “Timber” around New York, Gordon said that he didn’t think the spaces materially changed the music. “The piece is the piece,” he said. “I think it’s less about what places do to the piece as what it does to our awareness of the spaces we walk through.”

That’s what audience members, those who plan to attend or those who stumble across the performances, could get out of Resonant Spaces. “Walking through the viaduct is a phenomenal experience,” Gordon said. “But it’s one we all have. We go to the park and walk through a tunnel. Central Park is full of them. These places aren’t hidden. But their acoustical properties — those kind of are.”
