Deer Valley Mountain Host Michael O’Malley

mountain host tour deer valley

Michael O’Malley knows most every slope, canyon, chute, ridge and bowl at Deer Valley, and he can either tell you how to ski them or take you there himself. This congenial mountain host has guided, advised, and schussed with guests the past eight years. (His other job is Marketing Director of the Governor’s Office for Economic Development, but once the snow falls, he prefers his outdoor office, particularly on a powder day.) “We’re here to improve our guests’ experiences and share our knowledge of the mountain,” says O’Malley. “On a typical day, we have a dozen mountain hosts on the mountain. We have lawyers, judges, even a rocket scientist on our crew. We answer questions at trail maps, help ski patrol and other departments, and generally ensure our guests have a safe, enjoyable time.”

If someone drops a glove, pole or cell phone in tough terrain beneath a lift, the hosts are on it. If a beginner can’t make it down the green run, a host will assist. The best aspect of the job is leading one of the five free tours daily: 9:30 a.m. at Snow Park Lodge for experts only; 10 a.m. at Snow Park Lodge for advanced intermediates and mellow intermediates (two groups ski blue runs at different paces); 1:30 p.m. at the base of Sterling Express chairlift for intermediates, and an experts’ tour.

Park City mining history — e.g. there are 1000 miles of tunnels beneath these mountains — tips on dining, and lift line tactics are normal tour topics. According to O’Malley, the “best job in Utah is taking five or six experts out on a fresh powder day and showing them great off- piste terrain. I really enjoy improvising. Sometimes weather or snow conditions limit tour choices, but we hosts can create a pretty challenging expert tour that never leaves Flagstaff Mountain (known as ‘Groomer Heaven’). In two hours, we will not repeat a run. We can show our guests aspects of the resort they would otherwise never encounter.”

Hosts are accomplished storytellers too, O’Malley says, entertaining guests with tantalizing tidbits of the early days: The Cushing of “Cushing’s Cabin” atop Flagstaff Mountain was a Deer Valley ski run designer, alongside Stein Eriksen. “Mother Urban” was a 250-pound madam with a wooden leg and a parrot on her shoulder. An early mine developer’s ghost, Tommy Kearns, still walks the halls of his Salt Lake City home, now known as the Governor’s Mansion.

O’Malley’s distinctive black-and- green mountain host uniform is readily identifiable, as are his big smile and winning ways. Ask him anything, and he’ll have an answer! Deer Valley Mountain Hosts: 435-649-1000, deervalley.com

How to Navigate Deer Valley

How to Navigate Deer Valley

Travel Tips and Deals

By Travel Tips and Deals \ March 22 2018 --> \ --> 0 Comments --> -->

This post is part of a series on how to navigate a new ski area for the first time. For all of my general tips, read my first post, How to Navigate a New Mountain

Deer Valley Resort is known for its hospitality, service, perfectly groomed runs, and lovely powder stashed trees. Oh and food – they have delicious food! Like any mountain, finding your way around Deer Valley has a learning curve. As the name implies – it has valleys and there are some tricks to getting around.

When visiting for the first time, you’ll want to make sure you get the whole experience without wasting too much time learning your way. The best option to do this is starting with either a lesson or a complimentary mountain host tour.

Ski lessons are a great option if you haven’t skied in a while, or want to level-up your skills. Most instructors will not only teach you to ski better, they will also share the “best of” the mountain, such as best intermediate runs, best place for a fast bite, and how to find your way around the lift system.

If you prefer something more casual (and free), a mountain host tour is the way to go. This way y ou’ll get a local’s view of the mountain, score insider tips on the best food and après ski spots and learn a little about the history of the Park City area . Another great benefit are the people you will meet. “We’ve had people meet on a tour and get along so well they book their vacations together now,” shared one of our hosts on the lift ride to our first run.

I’d visited Deer Valley for the FIS Freestyle World Cup and to mountain bike during the summer, but I’d never skied there until this month. My family and I ski throughout the winter, so a tour was the logical option. At just before 10 am, we met at the base of Carpenter Express Lift where a sign marked the spot. Soon two guides and few other guests joined us and we got a quick briefing before loading up the chairs.

The tour was so helpful!

The tour was so helpful! In just two hours we knew our way around and had lots of tips and suggestions to make the most of our day. If you're planning your first visit to Deer Valley, or haven't been in awhile, these tips will get you started. However, I still suggest skiing with an instructor or host who can personally show you around!

Starting the Deer Valley Mountain Host Tour

Tips for a Perfect Day at Deer Valley

Of course, you need fuel to ski all day so that was one of the first things I asked about. Our host had lots of great suggestions!

Breakfast: Snow Park Restaurant. “It’s worth getting up early for!” shared Jennie. From the Natural Breakfast Buffet to the made-to-order specialties such as fluffy Belgian Waffles, it will start your day off right.

A speedy bite between runs : Cushing’s Cabin (top of Flagstaff Mountain) and Snowshoe Tommy’s (top of Bald Mountain) offer hot drinks, snacks, muffins, and hot turkey chili. It’s a great way to fill up without slowing down.

Lunch on a crowded day: Head back down to the Snow Park. Most skiers rush to mid-mountain restaurants and forget about the base. Enjoy a long run down and skip the crowds.

Meal not to miss: Bald Mountain Pho (located mid-mountain in the Silver Lake Lodge) or the Turkey Chili (it’s a crowd favorite) at multiple locations.

Great mid-mountain Eats: The Silver Lake Village has four restaurants to choose from (including the Pho). For a casual meal, opt for the Silver Lake Restaurant or Bald Mountain Pho. For table service, the Royal Street Cafe is a great pick (the Dungeness Crab Tower is a local favorite). Foodies may want to sample the fare at the Goldener Hirsch , Recipient of the AAA-Four Diamond Award and the  Wine Spectator  Award of Excellence, which also offers an après ski menu.

Dinner: Hands down the Seafood Buffet and Fireside Dining are two dinners you guests should experience during their stay.

Learning the Mountains on the Deer Valley Mountain Host Tour

Parent Hacks

Young kids are a handful, then add that skiing is a gear intensive sport and it’s a challenge for guests with young children. Here’s your hack…take advantage of all the skier services.

Ski Valet: Look for these awesome helpers dressed in green when you pull up to the Snow Park Lodge. They will help unload and re-load your gear.

Ski Storage: This is a huge help on multi-day visits because they will stash your gear overnight, or just for lunch. This means you don’t have to haul everything, plus the kids, each day! Ski storage service is available at the Snow Park Lodge and Jordanelle Express Gondola for day/overnight, and daytime only at Empire Canyon.

Accessory/Gear Storage: Perfect for all of the extra bags of stuff you may need throughout the day. For a small fee you can utilize either the attended basket check or Silver Lake or Snow Park Lodges. While there are also self-service lockers available at both lodges and the Jordanelle Express Gondola, I suggest the basket check because you can access your things as much as needed during the day.

Skier services are a life saver when visiting with kids!

Children’s Adventure Area: Download the Children’s Adventure Area Map ahead of time to get kids excited about their visit.

Say “hi” to the Avalanche Dogs: Ask early if any of the “avy” dogs will be available for visits during the day. I’m also told a special flag is flown outside the ski patrol huts when visits are welcomed. Just please don’t approach the dogs on skis if you see them out and about. Stand still and ask for the dog’s safety.

Insider Tips to Make a Good Day Great

Grooming Report: Every morning a grooming report is published telling when each run was groomed and which is the “groomer’s pick.” Grab one on the way to the lift.

View Lift Status and Grooming Reports Online: I love advance information. Deer Valley updates the lift status and current trail conditions  promptly on their website so you can know where to start your day.

Buy Tickets in Advance: One of the top features of Deer Valley is that tickets are limited to a set number daily. This means it sometimes sells out. Avoid disappointment by buying a day in advance.

Demo Rossignol Skis: Demo the latest in Rossignol skis at the Rossignol High Performance Test Center , located adjacent to the Empire Canyon Lodge.

Trails for All

No matter your ability there is something for you at Deer Valley. Here are a few ideas to get you going!

Beginners: Snow Park Lodge is a good place to start if you’re still getting your ski legs. All of the green runs at Deer Valley are slow zones so you don’t have to worry about being plowed over by an over zealous speed demon. You can warm up on Wide West before exploring green runs further up. For sweeping views and a long cruiser run, head to the top of Bald Mountain to catch Homeward Bound. On Flagstaff check out Onterio and Bandana.

Intermediate: Bald Mountain and Flagstaff Mountain offer a bunch of blue options also with great views. On Bald Mountain, check out Nabob, and Keno. On Flagstaff Mountain, Bluebell is popular along with Sidewinder.

Advanced: The black and double black runs off of Bald Mountain are a good pick for advanced skiers, including the Ruins of Pompeii, Perseverance Bowl, and Mayflower Bowl. For more challenging terrain, head over to Empire. If trees are your pleasure, Centennial Trees off of Lady Morgan Express may be the ticket.

Our Mountain Host Jennie Leading the Way - Deer Valley Mountain Host Tour

Two hours well spent!

Over the course of two hours with our expert Mountain Host, we’d traveled a huge chunk of the resort and knew our way around far better than we would have in a day or two un-guided. We’d also learned about all of the skier services, some history, and where to grab a bite. With tummies grumbling, we said our goodbyes and headed in for steamy bowls of Pho. Two hours well spent!

Deer Valley offers four complimentary Mountain Host tours each day. They depart from the Snow Park and Silver Lake Lodges and are geared toward intermediate and expert skiers. More information may be found on the Deer Valley website under “winter activities,” or click HERE .

Deer Valley Ski Resort is an  alpine  ski area that’s just within the Wasatch Range. It’s in the historic mining town of Park City, Utah, the USA, about 36 miles east of Salt Lake City. The resort is consistent in maintaining its rank among the top ski resorts in North America. It ranked 1st for a great five years on top among SKI Magazine readers’ North American ski resorts rating.

The ski resort offers a complete vacation package experience, including planning and vacation rentals, mountain dining, ski schools, chairlift activities, and summer concerts. The Deer Valley resort regularly hosts the International Ski Federation competitions. It was also a venue site of the 2002 Winter Olympics with the resort hosting the following events: aerial, alpine slalom, and freestyle moguls.

Deer Valley competes within a number of ski resorts just near the vicinity. Although, they differentiate themselves by catering more to the upper-class audience than their competitors. The resort exposes its visitors to fine dining, boutique shopping in the main lodge, and free ski valets and parking shuttles. Deer Valley is one of three resorts in the nation that only offers skiing, which appeals much to the ski community.

To avoid overcrowding, Deer Valley limits its ticket sales to only 7,500 per day and, with limited access, uses more grooming equipment than the other ski areas near them. With a total uphill lift capacity of 50,470 skiers per hour, Deer Valley has approximately 50% higher lift capacity than each of its larger neighbors. The resort has 21 chairlifts, including 12 high-speed detachable quads and an enclosed gondola that can cater to 4 passengers.

Mountain Activities

Mountain host tours.

You can enjoy the winter season by going on a fascinating ski tour of Deer Valley Resort. The friendly Mountain Hosts will tell you all about the resort’s terrain, history, and trivia about the resort as you discover new runs and secret powder stashes with the locals. Deer Valley offers its guests four complimentary Mountain Host tours each day. The tour starts by leaving from the Carpenter Express chairlift’s top and is available to skiers with intermediate and expert abilities. For groups greater than 10, reservations are required, but for guests in 10 or fewer groups, there isn’t a need to reserve the tour in advance.

Deer Valley Resort offers NASTAR ski racing, fun and competitive racing program that allows racers to compete with one another regardless of their different ages and abilities. They could join in at the racecourse on Bald Mountain near the Silver Lake Lodge. All races are held daily on the Dual GS venue from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. if the weather permits. Each racecourse has a racer handicap system. There are different medals you could win at a NASCAR race based on the handicap you were given: a Platinum, Gold, Silver, or Bronze medal.

Rossignol Test Cent er

The hotel also offers a complimentary service that allows guests to visit the Rossignol High-Performance Test Center. There, the guests are allowed to demo the latest in Rossignol ski technology. The test center opens at 9 a.m. and closes at 3 p.m. daily during the winter season and is located adjacent to the Empire Canyon Lodge just near the ski storage area.

Ski With A Champion

Guests now can ski with an Olympic athlete. Ski with a Champion offers guests with  skiing  experience to ski with one of the seven available Olympic snowsport athletes during winter. The experience includes access to the Ski School lane at all chairlifts and is only available to participants above 7 yrs old with a maximum group size of 6 people.

Summit Meadows Adventures

Summit Meadows Adventures offers guided snowmobile tours of the scenic views of the Wasatch Mountains. It is located on Garff Ranch, eight miles away from Main Street in Park City. The guided snowmobile tours are available for individuals and groups. The tourists must wear helmets, which are available for free or could wear their own. It’s also recommended for them to bring their own  goggles  or protective eyewear.

What Else Does Deer Valley Resort Offer?

Deer Valley Resort offers various activities. You can take a piece of the resort with you as you shop from their retail stores or, if you’re visiting in the summer, you could enjoy their outdoor concert. There are also plenty of great diners and restaurants available in the vicinity. For those who want to preserve their resort experience and save their memories, the resort offers high-end, professional portrait and action photography on-mountain photography provided by Mountain Ridge.

Deer Valley

Deer Valley is one of three world-class ski areas located in Park City, Utah, a short drive from Salt Lake City, a key venue for Winter Olympics in 2002.

deervalley 612250 powder

Apart from being highly regarded for its skiing Deer Valley has carefully built a reputation for brilliant service standards in a country which is generally renowned in any case for its service standards. In other words it aims to provide the 'crème de la crème' of on and off-slope service and facilities, and if the independent skier surveys in US publications is anything to go by, it succeeds in this aim.

Deer Valley normally makes the number one slot in this category, year in, year out and is often top 5 'overall' for US resorts.

Following the 2002 Olympics, Utah and particularly Park City is arguably the world's top skiing boom town. No other can claim to have three international-calibre ski areas on its doorstep - Deer Valley, Park City Mountain Resort and rapidly expanding 'The Canyons'.

The combined terrain of these three areas gives Park City one of the largest ski areas in the world, and the fact that all three have separate ownership means that the competitive nature is there, which can only benefit visitors. All three have added new lifts and terrain over recent seasons.

Although the Park City Mountain Resort is long established, Deer Valley itself was conceived and opened as recently as 1981 to a modern design and remains independently owned and operated (an increasingly rare asset for a major North American resort). It is located a mile from Park City's central Main Street.

The legendary service standards were there from inception, and currently include the option to send your skis ahead to the resort, and back home afterwards by courier. Or, if you decide to drive up with your skis, guest service attendants are available to help you load and unload your gear.

You can also expect your ski teacher to come round and meet you at your condo before your private lesson if you'd like. Free daytime and overnight ski storage is also provided. Off the slope's Deer Valley's reputation for high culinary and lodging quality is as high as its other service standards.

World famous for customer service and trail grooming and often promoted with neighbouring Park City resorts of Park City Mountain Resort and The Canyons, Deer Valley was one of the venues for the 2002 Winter Olympics , the slalom, aerial and mogul competitions were staged here.

Since the 1998 - '99 season, Deer Valley's skiing has extended over four mountains, with the addition of Empire Summit and its Empire Canyon ski area, previously only accessed by snowcat. Two new quads now serve the terrain, which includes Deer Valley's highest: up to 9,570 feet (2,917m). It includes a variety of trail levels, along with some of the resort's toughest runs with ten chutes, containing 45 to 60 degree pitches, as steep as anywhere in Utah, and three bowls. Yet another way in which the resort leads the industry is in its grooming standards, which are known for their immaculate perfection - too immaculate for some! There are trails for all standards right across the resort's mountains, although some suit one category slightly more than another. There are easy, intermediate and advanced trails on every mountain. First time skiers have a separate, protected beginners' area known as Wide West, which is accessed by the Burns and Snowflake chairs. This is located on Bald Eagle Mountain, the first to be reached from Deer Valley's base and best suited to beginners and intermediates. The new Deer Crest area has added a further eight trails served by a quad and an unusual new four seater gondola. A second mountain suited to beginners and intermediates is Flagstaff, although it also includes the resort's double-black diamond Ontario Bowl runs. Most of Deer Valley's terrain will suit intermediate skiers, and the resort has two categories of intermediate level run. Normally graded 'blue square' in North America, Deer Valley offers 'double blue square' grading for tougher intermediate trails. Bald Mountain contains mostly intermediate and advanced terrain with Sunset the escape route for beginners who mis-read their maps. Free tours are staged twice daily for intermediate and advanced level skiers. Deer Valley Mountain hosts meet guests at the base of the Carpenter Express lift in the morning or from Silver Lake Ski storage in the afternoon. There's a wide range of ski school programs with special women's clinics and programmes for children. Stein Eriksen, now in his seventies, the 1952 Olympic Champion, is Deer Valley's Director of Skiing. On-mountain dining is taken to new heights at Deer Valley and the resort is famous for the quality in this area in particular. The Snow Park Lodge, the resort's main base lodge, houses the Snow Park Restaurant where Belgian waffles and eggs Benedict are served from 8 to 10.30 a.m., whilst the Snow Park Lounge offers hors d'oeuvres after 3.30 p.m. On the mountain there are two huts which offer hot drinks and snacks: Snowshoe Tommy's is located on the top of Bald Mountain and Cushing's Cabin on top of Flagstaff. The Silver Lake Lodge offers four different eating choices: Silver Lake Restaurant, which is buffet style, Bald Mountain Pizza, McHenrys - a casual restaurant open for lunch and dinner - and the Mariposa, Deer Valley's premier fine dining restaurant.. Deer Valley is one of the three Utah resorts selected to stage Alpine skiing events for the 2002 Salt Lake Olympics. The resort hosted three Olympic events - the men's and women's slaloms will be staged on a black diamond trail called "Know You Don't", the combined slalom on 'Big Stick'. Deer Valley will also host the freestyle skiing disciplines of high-flying aerials and bump and run moguls

Deer Valley's Children's Center can accommodate children from 2 months of age, with skiing for children aged 3 to 12. Babies aged up to 2 are in infant care, and non-skiing children aged 2 to 12 are also looked after in the Center which is at the resort's Snow Park base lodge. For skiing children the program begins with the Fawn Special where three year old's receive a one hour private lesson daily with the rest of the afternoon in Children's Centre activities. The Bambi Special, for children three-and-a-half and older gives kids the option of additional ski time or other outdoor activities after lunch. The Reindeer Club is for children aged four-and-a-half to 7; it includes a full day of lessons and lift ticket. Children aged 7 to 12 can participate in The Adventure Club. On the slopes and next to the Children's Center, the Snow Safari park has a jungle theme complete with animals, waves, kid-sized radical bumps and rolling banking. The Antler Cup, a fun race for children, is staged every Friday. The Enchanted Forest draws children into a labyrinth of exploration. Complimentary pagers are offered to parents of children registered in the Children's Center and they're also kept informed of their child's progress and happiness through progress cards. A Teens Program, the 'Teen Equipe' operates during mid-to-peak periods . Teenage children up to age 17 receive a 35% discount off the adult rate when guests purchase at least three nights lodging and two days skiing at least a fortnight in advance through the resort's Central Reservations service.

Deer Valley has set the standard for dining in North American ski resorts with The Mariposa top of the stack, and serving a blend of classic and current cuisine, as well as vegetarian specialities. The Royal Street Café, located mid-mountain during the winter season. The contemporary lodge setting complements both traditional and trendier entrées such as the Chipotle VVQ Burger or shrimp and lobster layered with papaya salsa and fresh guacamole, served in a margarita glass. The Seafood Buffet attracts the locals along with visitors with its vast array of fresh seafood including chilled seafood. Non-fishy choices are also served, such a grilled fowl, pasta and prime rib and it has a reputation for its superb deserts.

Deer Valley has not cultivated an après ski scene of its own, with most night owls preferring to head in to Park City for it's many facilities. The resort's location only a mile from Park City's Main Street, which boasts more than 100 restaurants, bars, saloons and other night spots. In 2009 a new law came into effect changing Park City’s and indeed the State’s bar scene. In the past purchasing a temporary membership was required to get into a bar or club. Bars, pubs and clubs now have an open door policy to welcome all comers over 21 and no longer require customers to purchase a temporary membership. Salt Lake City itself is also easy to reach for an evening. Regular attractions there include performances by the famous Mormon Tabernacle Choir (rehearsals are free and open to the public on Thursday evenings) and an ever-increasing array of sporting events, such as games by the Utah Jazz basketball team. Several of Deer Valley's top restaurants including the Seafood Buffet, McHenrys and The Mariposa are open in the evenings.

One of the few resorts left in the Western world where snowboarding is not permitted.

The Ultimate On-Mountain Guide to the 2022–2023 Season

By Jane Gendron Photography by Deer Valley Resort and Park City Mountain December 5, 2022 Published in the Winter/Spring 2023 issue of Park City Magazine

Buckle up. Click in. Let loose. This is going to be the greatest season of our lives. As on-hill events make a comeback—and the “triple-dip La Niña” delivers Utah’s beloved powder (fingers crossed)—the 2022–2023 on-mountain adventure potential is off the charts. Of course, knowing the ins and outs of the resorts at your ski tips and snowboard edges is paramount to living the snowy dream. Here, we guide you through some can’t-miss happenings at Deer Valley Resort and Park City Mountain.

Soak up some rays at one of Deer Valley's ski beaches.

Deer Valley Resort

THE BASICS Known for impeccable grooming and a highly civilized vibe, ski-only Deer Valley Resort (deervalley.com) spans 2,026 skiable acres, roughly 3,000 feet of jaw-dropping vertical, and six peaks—all of which have an easy (or at least, intermediate) way down. Powder stashes used to last for weeks chez DV, but an influx of savvy Ikon passholders—who tend to chase down the deep stuff more than the erstwhile stick-to-groomers regulars—have made the race for pow a little more competitive these days. DV still sells out, based on lodge capacity, so even on the busiest days, it’s possible to carve out elbow room.

BIG DOINGS Cue the cowbells. The No. 1, must-experience event at DV is the Intermountain Healthcare Freestyle International Ski World Cup, February 2–4, 2023. This long-standing tradition buzzes with an Olympics-esque vibe as elite bump-skiers and aerialists throw down ridiculous tricks on Champion and White Owl, respectively. Covid precautions moved events to daylight hours in recent years, but, this season, it’s back to a bundled-up party under the lights as skiers flip, twist, and soar into the night. Tip: Be prepared to hoof it up the hill to the base of the action—and remember to throw some water and warming drinks in your pack.

An homage to winter, the resort’s annual Torchlight Parade, December 30, delivers holiday cheer in spades as skiers float down the slopes in graceful formation. As dusk falls, partake in complimentary cocoa and cookies beside Snow Park Lodge—or watch the spectacle with cocktail in hand either from the terrace at lofty St. Regis Deer Valley or at Snow Park Lodge’s watering hole, Fresh Tracks.

On the good cause front, Shred for Red, benefiting the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (cure.lls.org), adds some warm fuzzies to opening day, December 3, along with an on-hill scavenger hunt, skiing with Olympians, racecourse competitions, and DV-style après nibbles and sips in the lodge. And be sure to dust off the onesie for National Ability Center’s “Wine on the Mountain,” (redwhiteandsnow.org/events/wine-on-the-mountain/) on March 3, where retro ski garb accompanies vino at St. Regis Deer Valley to benefit the local nonprofit’s programs.

There's plenty of powder to be found at Deer Valley—if you know where to look.

ICONIC SNOWY EXPERIENCES   To get a genuine feel for Deer Valley, meet at the top of Carpenter Express chairlift for a complimentary mountain host-led tour (deervalley.com/things-to-do/activities/mountain-host-tours). Five tours—two for experts and three for intermediate skiers—depart daily with friendly guides delivering snippets on area history, under-the-radar skiing finds, and other insider tips. Of note: Know your ski level. Expert tours are for true experts.

Splurge on Ski Utah’s Interconnect Tour, a bucket-list experience for advanced and expert skiers who’ve always had a hankering to venture beyond the ropes. The inter-resort tour spans up to six Wasatch ski areas (Deer Valley, Park City Mountain Resort, Solitude, Brighton, Alta, and Snowbird) and the backcountry terrain in between. The tour originates at Deer Valley or Snowbird.

Best Ways Down—and Around

For Powder: Most powderhounds head to Empire for the steep-and-deep promise of Daly Chutes and X-Files, not to mention the eponymous bowl itself. But don’t overlook Mayflower (the tortoise-like pace of the chair is a good way to rest those burning thighs and a decent exchange for uncrowded descents). Other pow-finds of note: Ruins of Pompeii , particularly Peerless Trees (skier’s right), Ontario Bowl , and Centennial Trees off Lady Morgan chair. For a low-angle, entry-level, gladed powder experience, check out Sunset Glades or Oompa-Loompa Land .

mountain host tour deer valley

The groomed  terrain at Deer Valley is legendary.

For Groomer Days: Stein’s Way is a must with its big views and fun stint of vertical. Also, check out Stargazer off Red Cloud , and Sidewinder off Northside . Deer Valley outranks most resorts in terms of grooming, so check out the day’s reports for the corduroy du jour.

For Spring Skiing: Once the sun warms the snow into that beloved sugary consistency or corn snow, Empire Bowl is a prime spring-swooshing area. Other printemps pistes: Tycoon (via Wasatch) and Magnet (off Lady Morgan). As the day warms, shift toward runs with a later-sun aspect, such as Nabob or Keno (off Wasatch Express) or Hawkeye (off Northside).

For Those Seeking Green Circles: A reconfigured Snow Park chairlift system (slated for completion mid-January) should give beginners and small fries easier access to gently angled, typically less-crowded runs like Deer Hollow and Gnat’s Eye . Kids will also want to check out whoop-de-whoop fun in short-ski-friendly Bucky’s Frontyard, Ruby’s Tail, Silver’s Aspen Slalom , the Enchanted Forest , and Quincy’s Cabin —all of which can be found on a new, parent-friendly map of the Children’s Adventure Zones .

Local’s Tip “Look at the grooming report with special attention to the second-shift groomers, particularly if you want something a little softer in spring conditions.” —Brad Lewis, professional photographer who has skied Deer Valley terrain since 1972, before the resort existed

EAT, DRINK & BE MERRY Deer Valley’s legacy of top-notch dining goes above and beyond its signature—and legit—turkey chili. Here are some not-to-miss noshes.

mountain host tour deer valley

Deer Valley's Fireside Dining is a winter must.

For a quintessential, winter wonderland experience, Fireside Dining at Empire Lodge , preferably accompanied by a ride in a horse-drawn sleigh, delivers on ambience and hearty culinary exquisiteness. Roaring fireplaces yield raclette, hearty stews, and melted chocolate sumptuousness. In spring, hit the deck of Rime Raw Bar , at the top of Jordanelle gondola (yes, non-skiing friends can ride up and join you), for lobster rolls and oysters on the half shell—or a French dip sandwich if seafood isn’t your thing—and top-notch views. Year-round, tuck into brunch at Stein Eriksen Lodge , fondue at Goldener Hirsch , and mussels (or sinfully rich hot chocolate) at the St. Regis Deer Valley .

The après-ski scene has ticked up a notch in recent years at DV, particularly in March. Weekend pairings of live music and trendy sips—from the likes of Whispering Angel Rosé and High West Distillery —transform the “beach” at Silver Lake into a hopping afternoon spot. Think ice sculptures, air streams, and more. At Snow Park , “Brews and Tunes,” featuring live music or DJs and local beers, liven up the deck on Saturdays, from March 4 through closing bell.

For opulent and unique experiences, both St. Regis and Montage have chic, on-snow structures—a “vintage room” and yurt, respectively—worthy of pinkies-up après-ski-by. Plus, the St. Regis’s garden-o’-fire flanked terrace is a go-to for al fresco drinks and truffle fries. Check out Stein Eriksen Lodge ’s on-the-deck Alpenglobes for an intimate and enchanting slopeside (sans the outdoor chill) dining experience.

For family-friendly après, eats, and entertainment (i.e., billiards and retro arcades), check out Stein’s Champion’s Club or, for bowling, Montage’s Daly’s Pub & Rec.

Local’s Tip: “Stein’s Way is the most scenic, go-to photography spot on the mountain, but Deer Valley really does offer vistas in every direction.”  —Brad Lewis

More DV events to have on your radar this winter • Visits with Santa on December 24 • New Year’s Eve party at the new Cast & Cut at Snow Park Lodge • “Taste of Luxury” series featuring world-renowned chefs like Michelin-starred Massimo Bottura

Park City Mountain

mountain host tour deer valley

Park City is the only resort with lift access directly to historic Main Street.

THE BASICS Big, beautiful Park City Mountain (parkcitymountain.com) encompasses a mind-boggling expanse of skiable terrain. Skiing rope-to-rope takes a fair while, given the 7,300 acres and Quicksilver Gondola ride in between, so it’s best to start by sampling this mammoth ski area in village-centric chunks. Whether you get your bearings on the Park City side or hop aboard the lifts from Canyons Village , the skiing and riding is downright fun—particularly when you discover the terrain parks, half-pipes, and hit the elbows-out lift line at “ Jupe ” (a.k.a. Jupiter Peak) on a glorious pow day. Epic, indeed.

mountain host tour deer valley

Watching the annual Pond Skimming competition is as much fun—if not more—as participating in it.

BIG DOINGS Two of the longest-standing, most beloved, PCM traditions graciously bookend the season: the elegant, magical Torchlight Parade on December 24 and Pond Skimming , an outrageously fun rite of spring that typically lands near the resort’s closing day. The former aligns with a slew of holiday-centric, ice sculpture-flanked happenings during Snowfest , mid-December through New Year’s Eve. The latter rocks as an impressively comedic and sometimes awe-inspiring wrap-up to the Spring Grüv lineup, which also includes concerts and bluebird-day-inspired antics. In between, Silver Sky Nights combine big-time live music, fireworks, ice carving, complimentary hot cocoa, and more at Canyons Village for six wintery evenings.

mountain host tour deer valley

Park City Mountain features an expansive 7,300 acres of terrain.

For impressive, alpine racing action, be sure to cheer on the oft-Paralympics-bound adaptive athletes at the 34th Annual Huntsman Cup World Para Alpine Ski Races , February 1–3. And, on the good cause side of the equation, keep an eye out for the return of the rose-hued, on-the-slopes fundraiser benefiting Huntsman Cancer Institute, a.k.a.  Pink Park City (pinkparkcity.com) in March of 2023 or 2024. The return of Elevation Utah’s Gay Ski Week (utahgayskiweek.com), February 22–26, delivers both on-mountain and off-piste fun for its 13th year in PC. And, though unofficial, costume-bedecked Clown Day traditionally ends the season with smiles—and a lot of PBR empties.

ICONIC SNOWY EXPERIENCES Riding Town Lift from the bustling historic hub of Park City to the slopes is a must—as is cruising into town via runs like Quittin’ Time and Creole . Plus, an easy-breezy town pop-in opens the door to shopping, dining, and après fun before returning to the slopes. For another only-at-PCM-experience, mosey over to the Canyons Village side for a toasty ascent via the resort’s heated chairlift, the Orange Bubble Express .

mountain host tour deer valley

Ski past historic mining relics still dotting the hillside at Park City Mountain.

Don’t miss a guided tour of the mountain to soak up fascinating local history (i.e., dig into the stories of those authentic mine relics scattered around the resort). The first-come, first-served Silver to Slopes Historic Mining Tour starts at 10 a.m. on the Park City Village side (meet at the Eagle Statue). On the Canyons Village side, a complimentary Mountain Experience Tour gives skiers and riders the skinny on the resort terrain and departs at 10 a.m. from the top of Red Pine Gondola.

Local’s Tip “Earn your lunch. Hike Jupiter Peak and ski all the way down into town to hit Davanza’s for the best cheesy garlic bread in town. Try the pizza and Philly cheesesteak, too.” —Todd Fischer, owner Silver Star Ski and Sport and Park City local since 1998 (who has skied Park City since 1984)

mountain host tour deer valley

There's no  shortage of powder stashes at Park City Mountain.

Best WaysDown—and Around With 330 runs, a half-dozen terrain parks, and several peaks to top, PCM’s “best” runs are most likely its least crowded. So, think about hitting the hill early, skiing and riding through lunch, and having a quick chit-chat with a mountain host (the friendly folks beside the maps) to get the inside track on the day’s less-traveled finds.

For Powder: Local experts typically head for the high country on a deep-snow day, namely McConkeys and Jupiter (on the Park City side). Thankfully, the land dispute over Scott’s Bowl ended last season, so once you’re up “ Jupe ,” there is room to disperse amongst the bowls and glades. If lift-line jostling for fresh tracks isn’t really your speed, consider Keystone (off Thaynes), Assessment and Powder Keg (off Bonanza), and Fool’s Gold (via Motherlode chair). Or, go against the grain and hit the lower elevations for laps on Ski Team Ridge, like Erika’s Gold . For Canyons-side powder-hounding, beeline for Ninety-Nine-90 for freshies on 94 Turns and the tremendous runs off Super Condor . For smile-inducing, gladed skiing, point those tips toward Mystic Pines off Peak 5 .

For Groomer Days: On those just-wanna-carve, bluebird days, Silver Queen, Tycoon , and Assessment are the go-tos on the Park City side. The runs off King Con aren’t too shabby either, thanks to S-turn-friendly Sitka and Shamus . When open to the public and the corduroy is laid out just so, C.B.’s Run (the Olympics racecourse) is one heck of a ride. Not to be outdone, the Canyons side has a slew of cruisers. Check out Harmony and Boa , both lengthy runs, for a little thigh-burn, thanks to the number of turns you’ll accomplish on the way down.

For Spring Skiing: Once the sun transforms frozen crust into that soft, swoosh-able stuff, West Face and Dead Tree (both off Jupiter) are spring-savvy pics for advanced skiers. And fans of moguls should consider charging the slushy bumps on Thaynes . On the Canyons side, hop onto Flying Salmon off Saddleback as well as Phantasm and Boogeyman off Dreamcatcher .

For Shredders (both small and tall): Ridiculously fun terrain parks are sprinkled throughout PCM. Get started at Little Kings (via Blaster Adventure Trail off Bonanza chair), go big at 3 Kings (the 2019 World Champs playground), and go huge in the tracks of Olympians at the 22-foot Eagle Pipe (Park City side). Be sure to check out flowy Transitions on the Canyons side for more jibs and jabs. For folks just trying to get a handle on green-level fun, High Meadows Park (Canyons) has plenty of pizza-wedge-making space, and adventure trails (demarcated by Pac-Man-like metallic sculptures, a.k.a. “Snow Bugs,” throughout the resort) are popular with little rippers.

Local’s Tip “Always have a neck gaiter with you because you never know when the weather is going to change. And the No. 1 thing that you can’t live without in Park City is ChapStick.” —Linda Larson, Park City Mountain ski instructor since 1985

mountain host tour deer valley

Elevated eats at The Farm

EAT, DRINK & BE MERRY A good rule of thumb for avoiding the hangries at PCM—and pretty much any ski resort—is to hit the lodges before 11 a.m. or after 1:30 p.m. on busy days. With that in mind, consider unbuckling those boots for a lengthy stint at Lookout Cabin, sidling up to the bar at Mid-Mountain, or tucking into some ahi nachos at Legends. For outdoorsy dining, glide up to the decks at Miners Camp or Tombstone Grill. Or, get away from the on-hill crowds by sliding into town for a bite.

After the lifts stop spinning, two long-standing culinary adventures stand out with altitude. Raise a pewter chalice of glogg alongside a multi-course Scandinavian feast, while a pianist tickles the ivories at the Viking Yurt (vikingyurt.com). For western eats (trout, prime rib, and High West whiskey-spiked cider) accompanied by a guitar-strumming singer, check out Snowed Inn Sleigh Company (snowedinnsleigh.com). Both experiences start and end with a sleigh ride—the former via snowcat and the latter fueled by draft horses. Giddy up.

The après staples on the Park City side are the Corner Store and the Pig Pen , both of which get rockin’ outdoors, particularly on a sunny spring day. At the Canyons, the Umbrella Bar is the go-to, but this season, keep an eye on the burgeoning scene at Red Tail Grill , given its expanded, fire-pit-bedecked patio. The new Pendry plaza—at the base of Sunrise lift and just around the corner from the bustling Forum—also has sneaky-fun après potential.

Additional culinary experiences of note in the vast PCM environs: The Farm (Canyons), Silver Star Café (on Three Kings Drive, near Park City base), and High West Distillery (in town).

IOC officials expected in Park City, tour includes mountain resorts, Main Street

Delegation’s trip to the state scheduled in months before 2034 games selection.

A delegation from the International Olympic Committee is scheduled to visit the Park City area next week as part of an important trip to Utah in the months before the full IOC is expected to award the 2034 Winter Olympics to Salt Lake City.

The Future Host Commission of the IOC holds an influential role in the selection of cities for upcoming Games and the trip is slated during a busy time for the Lausanne, Switzerland-based organization and the committee in Utah that is seeking the Games. The IOC is preparing for the likely awarding of the 2034 event to Salt Lake City during meetings this summer just before the opening of the Summer Olympics in Paris.

The delegation’s itinerary includes time in the Park City area on Thursday.

The IOC representatives are scheduled to tour the Utah Olympic Park — including the sliding track and a stop at the top of the ski jumps. Summit County officials and the president of the Utah Senate, Stuart Adams, will meet with the delegation at the park.

A stop at the National Ability Center’s McGrath Mountain Center at Park City Mountain will provide the delegation a view of the terrain proposed for some of the Olympic competitions. The IOC representatives are expected to briefly visit Main Street on a vehicle tour before heading to Deer Valley Resort. Mayor Nann Worel is one of the officials who is slated to attend a lunch with the delegation at Deer Valley. A visit to the Soldier Hollow Nordic Center in Wasatch County is also on the itinerary.

“The Park City and Summit County region is a vital host venue community as it will hold events in multiple different sports across three different sites. The Utah Olympic Park is a great example for the IOC of the sustainable use of an Olympic venue over time to energize sport. We are also appreciative of the opportunity to partner with two world-class ski resorts — Park City Mountain and Deer Valley Resort. The region is also reflective of the benefit sport can bring to communities, with thriving youth winter sport programs,” Fraser Bullock, the president and CEO of the Salt Lake City-Utah Committee for the Games, said in a prepared statement.

Karl Stoss, the IOC member who chairs the Future Host Commission, is leading the delegation and Christophe Dubi, who is the Olympic Games executive director for the IOC, is also scheduled to travel to Utah. United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee leadership is expected to travel to Utah as well.

There are a number of stops also planned throughout the Olympic region, including Rice-Eccles Stadium, the TRAX light rail system in Salt Lake City, Snowbasin and the Utah Olympic Oval.

The visit will follow five months after the IOC named Salt Lake City the preferred host of the Games of 2034 and in the period after the Salt Lake City-Utah Committee for the Games submitted thousands of pages of documentation to the IOC covering the details of the plans to host an Olympics.

The Park City area is crucial to the overall concept for a second Games in the state. Park City Mountain, Deer Valley and the Utah Olympic Park are identified competition venues while the community would play a key role in security, transportation and celebration planning.
