My husband and I are mmembers global Hawaii travel. From the moment we walked in we were greated with Hawaiian hospitality at its finest. We were so blown away with their membership packages and perks. We both said at the same time where do we sign. We purchased a membership and have been pleased every sense. That was last year, we're now back in Hawaii staying a while week for $379.00. Yes i said that correctly. $379.00 for the Week that is usually the cost of one night in most places. We've saved so much money with Global Hawaii travel we wish we would've found this company years ago. Not sure where these unsavory reviews are coming from but we are thankful for all they do and have saved money on making moments with my family. That is something i can't put a price tag on.

Just saw a whole van full probably about 25-30 humans Get into their tour van and none I mean nine put on a mask at all The driver drove away No mask at all. Please don't bring the virus in our state. Oh I don't care if you are vaccinated I don't care if your not. If I have to mask up, you need too. Someone has to turn in this company to DOH for not complying.

My family and I had a good time to join Little circle island tour. Our tour guide for that day was William. We truly enjoyed his expertise and personal touch to this tour. We had a great time by visiting Diamond Head Crater lookout, Hanauma Bay lookout, Halona Blowhole, Waimanalo beach and Pail Lookout. There was enough time at all the sites to see everything with time for photography. If you have a limited time to visit Hawaii, I think this tour is a good choice.

Please please PLEASE heed my review and others! This company is terrible! You are better off on another touring company or renting a car and going to attractions yourself. This company is unprofessional, and they are constantly lying to get out of complaints. You will not be able to fully enjoy the attractions because they are always late. When we went to the Polynesian cultural center and the Pearl Harbor visitor center, we missed several key events because they were late. We didn't even get to see the USS Arizona tour and the Battleship Missouri tour due to time constraints. They will take you to the location, and then basically said "Okay! We took you here, but you can't do this, this, this! Just take pictures and come back to the bus." What are we paying you for then? Don't even get me started on tipping. Of course, everyone should tip, but they were almost aggressive or hostile and demanded a certain amount that they did not deserve in my opinion. Terrible, terrible service. They are trying to con tourists and good working people who want to go on a pleasant vacation and don't know any better. I would not recommend this company to anyone.

Very dangerous drivers! We were driving past the Dole Plantation and a Hawaii Global Transportation van speed out of the exit to get on the main road. Both the driver of the van and my husband braked to avoid an accident, so luckily nothing major happened. However, the driver then sped to turn onto the road in front of us. This is a two lane road with one lane going in opposite directions. The driver then proceeded to drive recklessly. I could see his hand through the window moving around as if he was pointing out scenic points to the people in the car. All the while his car was drifting from side to side in the lane often times getting dangerously close to the cars coming from the opposite direction. We eventually got onto the freeway and the same type of driving and hand motions continued on the freeway where the cars were going much faster. If you are thinking of using them as a tour company, please try to find another company. They are extremely unsafe drivers.

Photo of Amy T.

Never went on tour with them and never will. I was parked at Diamond Head Lookout and was going to leave when I noticed a van had parked behind me. I started my car so the person would move. Now you would think the parking lot was full, but it wasn't! There was 1 more tourist van and maybe 2 more cars. There was room for at least another 5 cars to park! So why did this tourist van driver have to park directly behind me? Either he's stupid, or so rude and inconsiderate that there is no way I would ever recommend going on a tour with this company. So I had to wait a few minutes till all the tourist got back on the van after taking their pics, and wait till the driver moved the van before I could leave. What an idiot! Why block my car when there was so much more space to park without blocking another car. Didn't make any sense to me at all. If I could give minus stars I would.

Photo of Amy C.

There really should be a petition for negative stars because this travel agency does not even deserve one. First off, itineraries are NOT TENTATIVE despite the travel agency giving you one. They make their itineraries in a way that is most convenient for them NOT you, and they don't tell you until you LAND in Hawai'i. All the sites and activities listed on the itinerary is not a guarantee. Sometimes they will PASS by the sight seeing area and tell you you've been there, but won't tell you because they don't want to or everyone was sleeping on the bus/van. But the worse part was the LYING. Most of the tour days are half days, about a 5 hour tour or less and you need to give the tour guide a tip despite the SUPER BAD SERVICE. Each day is a different guide and a completely different group of people going sight seeing to where ever we were going that day. On one of the day tour days, the guide took us to the Pearl Harbor/U.S.S. Arizona Memorial site to take pictures for 30 minutes and then LEAVE. I was shocked to find out we wouldn't be able to actually go to the Arizona and see the memorial. When we asked the tour lady why we were not seeing it, she said you had to reserve tickets at least two weeks ahead of time (we did). Then she continued to lie to us saying it was all sold out and we left. Another couple also asked why we weren't seeing the U.S.S. Arizona and she told them we (our tour group) couldn't see the Arizona and get tickets because we (my mother and I) slept in late. This of course was not true the tour lady picked us up at 7 am and SHE was the one that was late. On top of that, the tour women didn't speak English that well and asked my mother and I to translate for her to one of the people in our group. Listen, I'm not here to DO YOUR JOB for you. Not only did the tour end an hour early, I saw her selling jewelry at the international market later that day. The next day, we talked to a couple on yet another day tour and they had told us they went to see the U.S.S. Arizona just two days before. So, we called and complained to the manager Mr. Shi, he then lied to us through the phone saying they don't allow tour groups over the Arizona anymore and the government doesn't have enough money to do it anymore. We also complained about the women tour guide and he told us he has no such employee. WTF? We asked around and it WAS possible to go the U.S.S. Arizona and got to Pearl Harbor EARLY 6am early and got tickets. Tickets were given out for FREE (and as many as you want) at about 7am. The first tour is at 8am and the latest is at 12pm. I was out trying to enjoy myself on vacation. I didn't need to be constantly lied to and pulled away to translate everything in English to someone I didn't know.

Photo of Sara R.

Hawaii Global Holiday Inc was horrible I would give it 0 stars if i could. They couldn't speak english at all the tour guide just said that his english was not good and we couldnt get off at many stops we just passed by and was shown the places from inside the tour bus. We asked for an english schedule and flyer but the tour guide said the company only has it and will get it for us tomorrow. Everyday we asked but was told the same thing and we never got it. DO NOT CHOOSE HAWAII GLOBAL HOLIDAY INC!

Photo of Jim L.

Very bad experiences. Booked through a travel agent in Philadelphia, choose the most expensive package for 7days and 6 nights, paid $3.320 k for 2 without air flight tickets. Same packages from China with similar 7 days cost $1.6k each including tickets. After got picked up from the airport, the local agent told us there are 1 1/2 day left for free arrangement, 2 of the 7 days are flight time, so there is 1 1/2 day left among the rest 5, what kinds of fraud is that? we paid around $800 for 3 small packages to fill them up right away with their recommendations. Pick ups never on time for 4 days, late from a few to 15 minutes. Daily local agent never check your next day schedule with you, driver starts the bus while elder is still walking back to seats. Changed the hotel from a Hyatt around $220 a day to a hotel smell mold and is worse than motel $68 a day on the day to Hilo and claimed that is what included. That's a flaud. I won't rate a star because it does not deserve.

The 5 Best Airlines That Fly To Hawaii, According To Reviews

H awaii has a little bit of everything for travelers whether they be thrill seekers or those in need of a respite. To put it simply, its eight islands provide a world of adventure and endless exploration opportunities. Unfortunately, Hawaii is thousands of miles away from the continental United States, meaning flying there can be costly. Travelers who want to save money are advised to book tickets for Hawaii's shoulder seasons in the spring and fall. Although there are remarkable attractions that make a trip to Hawaii in the winter unique , this, and summer, are the island's high seasons.

However, there's also the airline to consider when planning your tropical getaway. Various major airlines offer flights to Hawaii from cities across the country. As flights to and from the islands are typically six hours or more, you want to make sure you pick the right one suited to your needs and departure point. After all, you will be on board for quite some time.

So, which airline should you choose to take you to paradise? We can help with that decision! Islands has narrowed down the five best airlines flying to Hawaii using blogs, travel articles, and more. Some of these airlines have more advantages than others, but ultimately, their goal is to ensure travelers have an enjoyable flight to one of Hawaii's major airports.

Delta Air Lines

In 2024, Delta Air Lines was named the fourth best airline in the country by WalletHub. The company also ranked Delta as the most reliable airline and the most comfortable, tying with JetBlue Airways. Delta operates several flights to Hawaii including to Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) in Honolulu and Lihue Airport (LIH) in Kauai. Moreover, there are direct flights available for travelers flying out of destinations like Los Angeles, Salt Lake City, and Seattle. Suites & Lobbies Owner Brandon Hughes detailed their experience flying overnight from Seattle to Honolulu in economy class in a 2024 review for the site.

Hughes noted the comfortability of the seats and the tastiness of the snacks provided, offered to all cabin classes. In addition, Hughes lauded the crew service and said they would opt for this flight again. But don't just take Hughes' word for it. One Tripadvisor reviewer who flew to Hawaii wrote, "Although I prefer first class I was pleasantly surprised to know that Delta's level of service does not change with your seat! Aloha service on Delta!"

In February 2024, Delta announced that they would temporarily be adding a direct flight from Boston to Honolulu, totaling 22 nonstop flights to Hawaii by winter of that year. Keep in mind that Delta, which WalletHub states has infrequent flight cancellations, does not have change fees for many of its flights, adding flexibility for travelers. There are also  tricks that will get you priority boarding on Delta .

Hawaiian Airlines

It might not come as a surprise that Hawaiian Airlines, based in Honolulu, is regarded as the best airline that flies to Hawaii by Next Vacay, a service that finds affordable flights. The company cites its extensive flight and food offerings. Hawaiian Airlines, in fact, has service to Oahu, the Big Island, Maui, and Kauai. In addition, the carrier provides Hawaiian-inspired fare and snacks on flights to the islands. First class passengers will get to experience meals curated by renowned chefs like Hawaii natives Wade Ueoka and Michelle Karr-Ueoka, founders of MW Restaurant in Honolulu. Note that in-flight menus are changed periodically.

In a 2023 article for Business Insider, the website's aviation reporter, Taylor Rains, wrote about flying economy from New York City to Oahu and back on Hawaiian Airlines. She complimented the meals she received on both flights which included pasta, an egg salad sandwich, and a rice dish with meatballs and vegetables. In addition, Rains wrote that she was impressed with the seats' comfortability and the entertainment options made available to passengers.

Similarly, Forbes ranked Hawaiian Airlines as providing one of the most comfortable flights to Hawaii in 2018. The publication makes mention of the in-flight meals as well as the bells and whistles offered by the Airbus A330, the same plane Rains was aboard on her flight to Hawaii.

Alaska Airlines

According to Aviation Week, Alaska Airlines has 24 routes to and from the islands. The carrier provides countless flights to Maui, Honolulu, Kona, and Lihue from destinations like Seattle, San Francisco, Anchorage, Los Angeles, Dallas, and many more. In 2024, WalletHub ranked Alaska Airlines as the best airline in the country and the second-safest behind Spirit Airlines. Per the company's research, cancellations, delays, and other mishaps are few and far between. In short, you can't go wrong if you choose to fly with Alaska Airlines to Hawaii or any other destination.

There are also the perks to consider. Passengers flying in first class and premium class can expect plenty of legroom to stretch on their long-haul flight to the islands. Furthermore, Alaska offers passengers access to their substantial entertainment library to beat in-flight boredom. But it's not just WalletHub that's singing the praises of Alaska Airlines. Tripadvisor reviewers also commend the airline. "Round trip flight between Los Angeles (LAX) and Honolulu (HNL). Both ways the fights were full, on time, landed early, and luggage arrived undamaged in under 20 minutes," one reviewer wrote.

Another individual, who lauded the service provided at the ticket counter wrote, "If you want some ALOHA on YOUR flight to Hawai'i, try ALASKA AIRLINES!"  That said, the carrier is one of Hawaiian Airlines biggest competitors, and in late 2023, it was announced that the two would merge. However, this has yet to materialize at the time of this writing.

United Airlines

United Airlines is one of the best carriers you should be booking with if you want to save on first-class seats and if you want to fly to Hawaii, per Next Vacay. This is due to their flight offerings to the islands from cities outside of the West Coast. For example, there are non-stop flights to Honolulu from Chicago, Washington D.C., Houston, and Denver. Like Delta and Alaska Airlines, United was also named one of the best airlines in the country by WalletHub in 2024, coming in fifth place.

In 2023, Beat of Hawaii published a review on a roundtrip flight from Hawaii to Los Angeles on economy and economy plus. The travel site rated United's check in and boarding process a 10 out of 10 and noted that their flights were on time. They also commended the service provided by the flight attendants and the in-flight entertainment. Comfort-wise, the seats in economy plus were also given a 10 out of10.

However, the site did say there are some disadvantages to flying to and from Hawaii via United. The economy seating was rated a 6 out of 10, with Beat of Hawaii writing that it was inadequate for tall passengers. For reference, economy plus seating provides six more inches of legroom than economy. Likewise, Beat of Hawaii criticized the minimal snack and drink offerings. Nevertheless, if travelers can overlook these pitfalls, United is known to have affordable flights to Hawaii.

Southwest Airlines

Those who prefer a carrier with maximum flexibility should travel to Hawaii on Southwest Airlines. Southwest offers four fare types. In order of affordability, they include Wanna Get Away, Wanna Get Away Plus, Anytime, and Business Select. Regardless of choice, passengers can check two bags that are a maximum of 50 pounds each at no extra cost. This is in addition to a complimentary carry on and personal item. For this reason, Next Vacay named it one of the best airlines to fly to Hawaii. Furthermore, Southwest does not have any change or cancellation fees.

If you cancel your flight, you are eligible for a refund if you're flying Anytime or Business Select, or for a flight credit for Wanna Get Away and Wanna Get Away Plus. Unsurprisingly, Southwest came in at No. 10 on WalletHub's best airlines of 2024 list. However, there is a catch. As noted by Next Vacay, Southwest flights to Hawaii depart only from major cities in California -- Los Angeles, Long Beach, San Jose, and Sacramento -- and Las Vegas, Nevada, and Phoenix, Arizona.

In an article written for The Points Guy, the website's Director of Content Summer Hull, had positive things to say about her Southwest flights from Houston to Las Vegas to Kauai. Hull praised Southwest's affordability and noted that certain seats on the flight to Hawaii offer expansive legroom. Hull also noted that snacks and inflight entertainment are provided for free. Ultimately, Southwest is a solid choice to fly to Hawaii.

Methodology

To compile the airlines mentioned in this article, we examined travel publications like Forbes and NerdWallet. In addition, we assessed research and rankings from WalletHub. Tripadvisor and other reviews from various websites and blogs including Business Insider, Suites & Lobbies, Beat of Hawaii, and The Points Guy were also utilized to analyze our selections. Factors that were considered included the airline's amenities, comfortability, affordability, and regions of operations. More specifically, we wanted to ensure the airlines we chose had flights to Hawaii not only from the West Coast (which is closest to Hawaii) but the East Coast and other destinations as well.

Japan Warns of Elevated Risk of Giant Earthquake After Strong One Hits

The official warning came after a 7.1-magnitude temblor struck off the coast of southern Japan on Thursday.

Strong Earthquake Hits Southern Japan

Shake intensity.

River Akira Davis

By River Akira Davis Kiuko Notoya Hisako Ueno and Victoria Kim

River Akira Davis, Kiuko Notoya and Hisako Ueno reported from Tokyo, and Victoria Kim from Seoul.

Japan’s meteorological agency said on Thursday that there was a higher-than-usual chance that an immense earthquake could hit the country in the next few days, following a 7.1-magnitude temblor off the southern island of Kyushu.

Japan has long expected a major earthquake to occur along the Nankai Trough off its eastern coast. As of last year, researchers said there was a 60 percent chance that an earthquake of magnitude 8 to 9 — even more devastating than the one in 2011 that laid waste to the country’s northeast coast and knocked out cooling systems at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant — would occur in the trough area over the next 20 years.

After the 7.1-magnitude quake on Thursday, Japan’s meteorological agency convened a group of experts to evaluate whether it could be related to the long-anticipated bigger disaster, called a “Nankai Trough megathrust earthquake.”

Experts warn that an earthquake between two tectonic plates that converge along the Nankai megathrust fault, which runs from Kyushu north through Tokyo, could cause devastation. It could extensively damage cities throughout Japan, potentially cause a tsunami and lead to hundreds of thousands of deaths.

“The possibility of a large-scale earthquake occurring in the area of the Nankai Trough is relatively higher than usual,” the meteorological agency said in a statement late Thursday.

The risk that an earthquake of magnitude of 8 or higher would occur after one with a magnitude of 7 is particularly elevated for about a week after the initial temblor, the agency said.

A group of people in bright orange hats crouch on the ground, and a couple of people remain standing. A large statue looms in the background.

Japan’s meteorological agency issued a “caution” level of warning on Thursday. The next step up would be an “alert,” which would advise residents to evacuate from areas deemed a tsunami risk. The agency said it was the first time Japan had issued a “caution.”

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida urged people to ensure that they were ready at all times in case an earthquake occurred and they had to evacuate. He told reporters that the government was on high alert.

Earlier on Thursday, a tsunami advisory was issued for coastal regions on the southern Japanese islands of Kyushu and Shikoku after the 7.1-magnitude quake. As of late Thursday evening, the maximum height of waves recorded reached about a foot and a half off the coast of Miyazaki Prefecture on Kyushu.

A handful of injuries but no deaths were reported related to the earthquake. Footage showed images of strong shaking in buildings in Miyazaki Prefecture, but damage in the area appeared to be minimal. The earthquake occurred less than 20 miles off the coast of Miyazaki, according to the United States Geological Survey.

Bullet train service was temporarily halted on Kyushu, and the Miyazaki Airport suspended takeoffs and landings to inspect runways for any damage. Both bullet train and airport operations resumed later Thursday evening.

The Kyushu Electric Power Company said its nuclear power plants were operating normally.

Separate from the heightened possibility of a Nankai Trough earthquake, Japan’s meteorological agency advised being alert for aftershocks of a similar magnitude off the eastern coast of Miyazaki Prefecture over the next week. It said that landslides could also be a risk if there is rain in the coming days.

An earlier version of this article used an incorrect map showing an earthquake on Japan’s west coast. The earthquakes occurred on Japan’s east coast.

Hawaii to welcome international travelers + some COVID-19 rules to relax

Important note : Governor Ige has revised his 11/2 press release on 11/3 after our publishing deadline. The change is quite significant change. We have marked the changed section with bold red text.

global hawaii travel reviews

On November 2, 2021, Governor Ige held a press conference to announce Hawaii’s alignment with the federal travel requirements for international travelers. Starting Monday, November 8, 2021, Hawaii will welcome international travelers under the new federal requirements.

If traveling to Hawaii, the rules vary based on if the traveler flies directly from an international destination or whether the international traveler to Hawaii first enters the U.S. from another state or territory.

Direct International Travel to Hawaii

Travelers arriving directly to Hawaii from an international location are referred to as Direct International Traveler to Hawaii .

With reference to the governor’s press release , the new rules starting November 8, 2021 are as follows:

  • “ NON-U.S. citizens traveling directly to Hawai?i from an international destination must present BOTH a vaccination records AND a negative COVID-19 test result (NAAT or antigen) within three days of boarding a flight to the United States.
  • Fully vaccinated travelers must provide proof of vaccination and present a test taken within three (3) days of boarding flight to U.S . ; OR
  • Travelers not fully vaccinated must provide proof of negative COVID-19 test result within one (1) day of boarding flight to U.S.
  • “There will be no additional State of Hawai?i requirements for passengers flying directly into Hawai?i from an international destination. The airlines will screen passengers prior to their departure to the U.S. If foreign passengers fail to meet BOTH requirements and if U.S. citizens fail to meet ONE of the two requirements, they will not be allowed to board the flight. Once in Hawai?i, the CDC will conduct compliance checks.

“Note: Tests do NOT have to be done with Trusted Travel Partners under the new international  federal requirements, but they  MUST be done with a Trusted Travel Partner for  unvaccinated   domestic travel.”

Non-Direct International Travel to Hawaii

International travelers arriving to Hawaii from another U.S. state or territory are referred to as Non-Direct International Traveler to Hawaii.

Again, referencing Ige’s press release , here are the rules starting November 8, 2021:

“International passengers entering the U.S. from another state or territory will be treated as domestic travelers when entering the State of Hawai?i. The Safe Travels Hawai?i program remains in place for domestic travelers.

“Current Safe Travels Hawai?i requirements for domestic travelers include:

  • Creating a Safe Travels Hawai?i account on a digital device
  • Entering trip details
  • Filling out a health form, and
  • Attesting that all information is correct.

“Currently, travelers may bypass the state’s mandatory 10-day quarantine in one of two ways:

1) Upload a vaccination document; or

2) Upload a negative NAAT test result. The test must be taken by a Trusted Travel Partner (TTP) within 72 hours of departure for the State of Hawai?i.”

Additional vaccines to be accepted

Another announcement in this press conference is that Hawaii will be in alignment with the federal government with respect to acceptable vaccines for entry requirements. The state of Hawaii will accept vaccines approved or authorized by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, and vaccines listed for emergency use by the World Health Organization.

An example that was provided in the press conference was of a Canadian visitor who has received the AstraZeneca vaccine. As the AstraZeneca vaccine is approved by the World Health Organization, it will be accepted for Hawaii.

As far as which vaccines are deemed acceptable, in the press conference, they recommended to check the CDC’s page . It was noted that the list is subject to change.

Some Easing of Hawaii COVID-19 Restrictions

Additionally, Ige announced some limited easing of COVID-19 mitigation measures at restaurants and bars effective November 12, 2021. The good news is that outdoor activity at restaurants, bars and social establishments are no longer subject to capacity/spacing restrictions.

The new rules are a bit complicated for indoor activities and depend on if the county has a policy that limits patrons based on vaccination status or proof of a negative COVID-19 test taken within 48 hours. The details can be reviewed in Executive Order 21-08 .

At today’s check, HawaiiCOVID19.com/travel has not been updated to reflect the November 8, 2021 additions for international travelers. GoHawaii.com/travel-requirements has some additional guidance based on the new international travel rules.

Historic Martin Mars water bomber completes final flight in B.C.

Renowned aircraft to be housed in b.c. aviation museum in north saanich on vancouver island.

A massive water bomber escorted by nine fighter jets ejecting plumes of smoke into the sky.

Thousands gathered at Patricia Bay Park on Vancouver Island north of Victoria on Sunday to witness the final landing of the historic Hawaii Martin Mars, a legendary aircraft that fought wildfires in B.C. for more than 50 years.

The massive aircraft, with a capacity to carry more than 27,000 litres of water, departed from its longtime base at Sproat Lake in Port Alberni and landed in Saanich Inlet, before heading to its new home at the B.C. Aviation Museum.

Nine Canadian Forces Snowbirds jets accompanied the water bomber on its last journey, passing over a number of communities en route to its final destination.

The Snowbirds bid farewell to the well known aircraft with a non-aerobatic display, drawing cheers from onlookers below.

Two elder pilots with headphones inside the cockpit turning back while posing for a photo.

"It's kind of sad that it's the end of the story," said Peter Killin, a longtime pilot who flew the Hawaii Martin Mars for the last time, along with Harbour Air's Rick Matthews, on Sunday.

Killin, who has logged more than 1,000 hours of flying time with the water bomber, said he was introduced to the aircraft in 2000 by Matthews and was then hired a year later to pilot the Mars and help fight forest fires.

"It's a new chapter coming [for the aircraft] ... it's going to be good, people will get to see it." he added.

Preserving history for future

Earlier this year, Coulson Aviation, the company that purchased the Hawaii Martin Mars in 2007, announced it is donating the aircraft to the B.C. Aviation Museum, calling it a "grand ending to a great history."

"It's bittersweet to say goodbye," Wayne Coulson, CEO of Coulson Aviation told CBC News.

Iconic Martin Mars water bomber set to arrive at B.C. museum

The water bomber will become the centrepiece of a new wildfire exhibition at the B.C. Aviation Museum in North Saanich starting Sept. 28.

Steve Nichol, president of the museum, said it will be "the jewel in the crown" of the museum's firefighting display.

"This is a once in a lifetime event," he said. "We're going to have it open every day for the public, just to see what it was like to be inside the Martin Mars. I think people will be fascinated by it."

  • Martin Mars water bomber to be 'centrepiece' in museum exhibit

The province says it has provided $250,000 to protect and preserve the aircraft as part of the exhibition.

Richard Mosdell, who led the "Save the Mars" project for the museum, said he still remembers the deep rumble of the aircraft echoing through the valleys as it soared overhead, battling forest fires — "that deep, throaty old piston engine sound that you really felt in your chest," he said during an interview with CBC's On The Coast.

He says the aircraft's history is rich and varied and should be preserved for future generations to observe and appreciate.

'A true aviation icon'

The Hawaii Mars was one of six prototypes produced by the U.S. navy in the 1940s for large-scale transport between the West Coast and Hawaii. But when aviation technology progressed, the planes were retired and put up for auction.

According to the province, the Mars was later converted to serve as the largest air ambulance during the Korean War, capable of carrying more than 120 soldiers and medical personnel in one trip.

In 1958, B.C.'s forest industry purchased four Mars and repurposed them into wildfire-fighting machines.

A red and white water bomber plane can be seen flying by with lakes, hills and forest below.

"It just has a grand history and it is a true aviation icon,"   Coulson said.

Over its operational life, the water bomber dropped about 190 million litres of water on wildfires, a feat Coulson claims makes it the most effective firefighting aircraft in history.

The aviation company retired the water bomber in 2015, and it has since remained at the company's home base on Sproat Lake in Port Alberni.

Coulson says the evolution of aviation and firefighting technology led to the planes' demise.

"[But] there will never be a better firefighting aircraft, no matter what anybody says," he said.

Are Airbnbs banned in Hawaii? New law seeks to cracks down on short-term rentals.

Portrait of Kathleen Wong

Airbnb listings and other short-term vacation rentals in Hawaii are one step closer to being phased out as the state grapples with a housing crisis exacerbated by last year’s wildfires on Maui.

A bill with the potential to reshape vacation rental regulation across the state passed the Senate and the House on Wednesday and now awaits Hawaii Gov. Josh Green’s signature – who already promised to sign it if it hits his desk. If signed, the new law will go into effect on January 1.

SB2919 would grant each Hawaii county the authority to redefine zoning ordinances, including converting short-term rentals into long-term residential housing, in order to “guide the overall future development of the county.” Those who violate the law would be charged a fine of $10,000 per day.

Significant change won’t happen overnight, but it is the first major legislation regulating short-term vacation rentals statewide, according to Hawaii Sen. Jarrett Keohokalole, who introduced the bill.

“It’s huge,” Keohokalole told USA TODAY.

Learn more: Best travel insurance

The bill actually overturns a 1957 ordinance that drove Native Hawaiian communities from their homes and converted their land into sugar plantations. Many of the other zoning ordinances are outdated, Keohokalole said, and don’t reflect the influx of foreign investors or overtourism.

Should I visit Maui now? Maui businesses ask for responsible tourists to help economy after fires

“We know the majority of STRs (short-term rentals) in Hawaii are illegal, owned by non-residents, and contribute to skyrocketing housing costs,” Gov. Green posted on X , formerly Twitter, last week. “We support Senate Bill 2919 to empower counties to regulate STRs and potentially phase them out.”

Housing affordability in Hawaii has worsened over the past two decades. A single-family home cost four times as much in 2023 than in 2000, and less than one-third of households can even afford the typical local home, according to the Hawaii Housing Factbook by the Economic Research Organization and the University of Hawaii. Rents also continue to rise, and Maui has the most expensive median rent in the state – a typical apartment is $2,500 a month.

Part of that is due to the high percentage of short-term rentals in Hawaii’s housing stock. About 30,000 of Hawaii’s 557,000 total housing units, or 5.5%, are short-term rentals, compared to cities like Las Vegas, where only 3% are short-term rentals, the report said. It’s even worse in Maui, where vacation rentals account for 15% of the island’s total housing supply.

August’s wildfires, which destroyed the majority of Lahaina and displaced thousands of West Maui residents, only amplified the housing crisis on Maui. “With Lahaina, we’re in an emergency situation,” Jordan Ruidas of Native Hawaiian-led community organization Lahaina Strong told USA TODAY.

“The fire burned away the majority of our working-class housing,” she said. “We’re in shambles, and people are still waiting for long-term housing.”

Ruidas said around 3,000 displaced residents are still living in hotels, over eight months since the fires ravaged West Maui. Some are leaving Hawaii entirely due to the lack of stable long-term housing.

“What’s become clearer, at least in Lahaina and that outlying community, is that so much of the housing stock on that part of the island has been converted into vacation rentals that the survivors are struggling to find places to live,” said Keohokalole.

Maui County Mayor Bissen has said that he wants to “increase the inventory of available long-term units for people of Maui” and even proposed tax incentives for owners to convert their units into long-term housing in November.

“It’s not an inventory problem, it’s the fact that the inventory is being used for something that’s not helping the community,” said Ruidas.

From the time we called to make a reservation with Robin, who was very helpful and patient (even while there was a moment of indecisiveness) to arriving and being greeted by Diane, it was all so easy! The resort had beach chairs and boogie boards for our use and Diane was so kind as to put some bottles of water into a bag for us to take down to the beach with us. This was just what we needed." "WE had 2 other couples staying with us. They switched the twin beds in the 2nd bedroom into a king for the one couple and the other couple slept on the hide abed, they said it was the most comfortable bed they slept on. I think we convinced one of the couples to buy into global, we did go through a time share presentation there, and what we have through global is so much better. The condo was all we expected plus more. Everyone at the resort was very nice and helpful. We would definitely go back!"

"My Wife and I could not be more pleased with the service and attention, Global and Associates give to our Family. And many thanks to your associate Lisa Hampton for great concern and professionalism when we need answers. Once again THANKS"

"The condo was just perfect! Location was great and the staff was helpful. It was our first time using Global Discovery Vacations and we are so glad that we bought into this instead of adding onto our existing timeshare system!"

Delta's 3 newest long-haul Hawaii flights just got a big upgrade

Zach Griff

Update (3/7/2022): Delta has downgauged all three new routes to wide-body jets without a Premium Select cabin.

It remains to be seen if and when the premium economy cabin returns to these markets. However, by the time these flights launch, the airline will have completed much of its cabin retrofit program, increasing the odds that the new routes will eventually feature Premium Select.

Looking to upgrade your next flight to Hawaii? Well, you might want to consider Delta.

The Atlanta-based carrier is launching three new daily long-haul routes to the Aloha State this winter holiday season, and the airline just made an upgrade-friendly tweak to its plans.

Delta is already upgauging all three routes — just one week after they were first announced — with larger wide-body jets. The airline originally planned to fly a 226-seat Boeing 767-300ER on each route, internally referred to as the "76Z," which features 26 business-class pods, 35 extra-legroom Comfort+ seats and 165 standard coach ones.

Want more airline-specific news? Sign up for TPG's free new biweekly Aviation newsletter.

Now, you'll find the following jets on the three routes, as first seen in Cirium schedules and later confirmed by the carrier.

  • Atlanta (ATL) — Maui (OGG) commencing Nov. 19— Airbus A330-300
  • New York-JFK — Honolulu (HNL) commencing Dec. 17 — Boeing 767-400ER
  • Detroit (DTW) — Honolulu (HNL) commencing Nov. 19 — Airbus A330-300

On the surface, a larger plane might not mean much, but as you'll see, it's a big deal for flyers.

Perhaps the biggest implication is that both the Airbus A330-300 and Boeing 767-400ER that Delta will fly to Hawaii feature a Premium Select cabin , which is Delta's take on premium economy.

Premium Select offers a much more spacious seat than those in economy — it's wider, has more recline, and even offers a leg rest and footrest. It largely resembles a domestic first-class recliner with some additional bells and whistles. Plus, Premium Select gets its own cabin between business and coach, making for a quieter ride as you head to paradise.

global hawaii travel reviews

On long-haul international flights, Delta sells Premium Select as its own product for a price between business and coach. Along with the seat, premium economy travelers can expect an elevated dining experience and an amenity kit.

But on the new Hawaii routes, Delta is taking a different — and interesting — strategy to how it markets the cabin. Instead of selling the recliners as a Premium Select product, the airline is instead marketing the upgraded seats as Comfort+ , which is the airline's take on extra-legroom economy.

global hawaii travel reviews

And because of the Comfort+ designation, you'll be able to snag a premium economy recliner for just about $200 more each way than standard coach — a good deal relative to Delta's "Big 3" competitors, American and United, which charge roughly $500 more each way for their premium economy cabin on long-haul Hawaii routes.

The news gets even better for Medallion elite members , who are entitled to complimentary upgrades to Comfort+ on these routes. Diamond and Platinum Medallions will get upgraded to Comfort+ directly after ticketing, whereas Gold and Silver Medallions will need to wait until 72 hours and 24 hours before departure, respectively, to get a space-available bump to Comfort+.

global hawaii travel reviews

Plus, under the new Global and Regional Upgrade Certificate policy that went into effect on Feb. 1, these coupons can only be used to upgrade one cabin at the time of booking. And since the Premium Select cabin is being marketed as Comfort+, Medallions will be able to confirm a bump into Delta One as early as the time of booking, subject to availability.

When asked about whether this was a mistake on Delta's part, a carrier spokesperson confirmed that the airline's plan is to market the premium economy cabin as Comfort+. For how long that'll last is anyone's guess, especially considering that Delta could likely fill the Premium Select cabin at higher fares.

Therefore, I'd recommend locking in your tickets before a potential change in policy.

The upgraded jets aren't just welcome news for those looking to score a deal on a premium economy seat. It's also exciting for those sitting in the pointy end of the plane.

global hawaii travel reviews

That's because the Airbus A330-300 and Boeing 767-400ER both feature upgraded business-class products compared to the aging seats on the 767-300.

The former sports reverse herringbone pods that are arranged in a 1-2-1 configuration, with direct aisle access and plenty of privacy for each passenger.

global hawaii travel reviews

Meanwhile, the 767-400ER is outfitted with a modified version of the Delta One Suite . They're arranged in a forward-facing 1-2-1 configuration, but they feature larger privacy dividers, modernized inflight entertainment screens and even more upgrades compared to the outdated product on the 767-300.

global hawaii travel reviews

Altogether, if you're considering a trip to Hawaii for later this year, it could definitely make sense to travel with Delta. You can now lock in an upgraded onboard experience on its three new long-haul routes for a much better deal than traveling with American or United.

Celtic Highlights tour was wonderful

Celtic Highlights tour was wonderful. Stewart, our Driver was an absolute professional and very courteous to all of us. Dominic, our tour guide has an amazing knowledge of the countryside and history of each area and he is quite the character. My wife suffers from vertigo and the plane ride aggravated it. Dominic and Stewart went out of their way to make her comfortable. That allowed us to absolutely enjoy this beautiful trip.

Just completed Emerald Isle tour

Just completed Emerald Isle tour. We have been on many tours with Globus and others -- our tour director, Julian, was the best tour director we have ever had, bar none. He was extremely knowledgeable and HUMOROUS! Made the entire trip a home run

Good sample of cities

Good sample of cities, generally good accommodations, poor meals except for one. The problem was a tour director, Timea Howard, who insisted that there were "good Nazi years." She needs another line of work.

Our tour director

Our tour director, Christine was absolutely fabulous. She was extremely knowledgeable, enthusiastic, kind, friendly, and went above and beyond to accommodate everyone. Christine really tried to get to know everyone on the tour, their likes and needs. She frequently shared her own personal experiences. It is obvious that she really enjoys her job and also enjoys working with people. The tour took us to fabulous places and the hotels were located in central areas, allowing us to walk to many points of interest.

Fantastic Journey to Cuba!

It was a very well-planned tour with impeccable precision, experiences, and details. Globus and Cuban guides/directors were superb. Loved the experiences. I did contact Globus after we returned with one problem. At our MKE airport they mandated we give them our immigration papers...said we couldn't fly without the QR code...lady at counter finally gave us the website...Globus needs to prepare people for that.

Worst of Eastern Europe

We had tour guide Pieter Reynolds on the Best of Eastern Europe tour. It was terrible. On a 12 day tour, there were 4 public holidays and nothing was open. He was misogynistic, ill-informed and deplorable in his treatment of passengers. Our luggage was damaged and Globus took no responsibility. They also defended his lies when we tried to raise concerns. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY - go with ANY other company.

It was a great trip

It was a great trip. The airport transfers were great. We are very glad we arrived a day ahead of time, which allowed us to adjust to the time difference. We also greatly enjoyed our 2 day extension in Prague. Our tour guide was very nice, and provided historical information during our bus trips. Our bus driver was a gem,and really knew how to navigate the city traffic. We loved that our tour allowed for enough free time to explore on our own. We took advantage of optional tours in each city visited, and enjoyed those. The local guides provided a great orientation to the cities, and provided great historical insights.

Vietnam Globus Tour

First and foremost, our tour guide Dinh was outstanding. He knows his stuff, excellent customer service and he made our tour great! He even met us at the airport in Hanoi at 1:00 a.m. to get us to our hotel when we first arrived!! Second, our accommodations (including food and beverage services) were all excellent. Third, our daily excursions/activities were all very good and as promised, and more, in the information we received ahead of time. Fourth, the communications by Globus with us was excellent. Confirmations, Travel Documents, Travel Packet and the app were all really good and very useful for us.

Highlights of the South Pacific: New Zealand and Australia

We selected this tour based on the itinerary- it hit all the key spots we were interested in seeing . The online Globus portal allowed us to submit all required docs for international travel and gave details on the hotels and event on our tour. Our tour director Leonie was FABULOUS! She was very knowledgeable, funny, and kept us on schedule. She created a WhatsApp group so we could easily communicate with everyone in the group and share photos. Highly recommend Globus tours!

Our travel guide Ronan was awesome

Our travel guide Ronan was awesome! Unfortunately we got stuck in New Zealand because of a visa problem and the global emergency line never would get back with us to help. We had to figure out and book our own flights to get caught up with our tour. The tour was five stars long as you didn’t have any problems if you are on your tour and you have an emergency problem, you are definitely on your own never heard back from them.

This was my second Globus tour

This was my second Globus tour. Michael the tour guide was very knowledgeable, personable and helpful as well as Barry the coach driver, they were both great! Definitely enjoyed this trip. The price was excellent I checked out several tour companies and Globus had the best deals. Booked another trip in November to Ireland. I would definitely recommend Globus Tours.

We had the most wonderful tour…

We had the most wonderful tour guide/tour director, Robert Marks. He knew so many things and treated us with great respect. We would recommend Globus just based on Robert. In addition we had great accommodations and a small (6 people) group of congenial people.

Marvelous Egypt

In February, my husband and I visited Egypt 🇪🇬 for two weeks, staying at five-star hotels. I cried due to seeing great temples of history such as Karnak, Luxor, pyramids of Giza, catacombs at Alexandria, sarcophagus of famous pharaohs, Egyptian museum (relics, art, chariots, masks, tombs, etc. from 3,000 years ago), Aswan, additional pyramids, Lake Nasser, a Nubian village, the Valley of the Dead, Tutankhamen’s mummy and treasures, hieroglyphs, place where Moses was supposedly plucked out of the Nile river, and so much more. This trip exceeded my wildest expectations. It’s one of the best ever and I have recommended it to my friends. The Egyptian people are friendly, helpful and we felt safe. Our tour director was so knowledgeable and helpful too. Wish I could go again.

Beautiful Spain

I really enjoyed all the beautiful places we went and the amazing hotels. Our guide, Jose, was spectacular, and always shared with the group, historical facts about the places we were visiting. The food was very delicious, though I was hoping for some Paella and succulent pig.
