Rajmachi Fort

Karla Caves

The charming town boasts of the most stunning valleys, cascading waterfalls, pristine lakes, and mysterious caves. In fact, if you enjoy being in the lap of nature – especially when the hustle and pollution of the concrete jungle gets too overwhelming – there’s no better spot to head to. While there, you could savour local food, go on numerous treks, and discover a piece of the past that often doesn’t make it to the history books. Not to mention, there’s plenty of sunset points to indulge your romantic aspirations. Here’s our pick of where to head to on your next visit.

Visit these places in Lonavala to make the most of your vacation

Tiger’s leap.

Resembling a tiger about to leap across the valley – hence the name – this picturesque destination sits at about 650 metres above sea level. Trekkers and curious weekenders often head here. Come monsoons, they’re rewarded with the stunning sight of a cascading waterfall. While here, you’ll discover plenty of picnic-perfect spots, verdant green cover, an echo point, and a stream. There’s also street vendors close by offering comfort foods like Maggi, corn, ginger tea, and biscuits.

Bhaja Caves

Perhaps one of the most popular additions to any Lonavala itinerary – this is a group of 22 rock-cut Buddhist caves that date back to the 2nd century BC. Historically, this spot served as an important ancient trade route between regions by the Arabian Sea and the Deccan Plateau. While here you’ll spot 14 stupas, a stunning waterfall, verdant green cover, and the most intricate inscriptions. You could spend hours discovering the unique art that is wooden architecture – a hallmark of this protected national monument. You could trek to the spot or hail a cab.

Karla Caves

Right next door to Bhaja Caves is this complex of ancient rock-cut caves that also dates back to the 2nd or 5th century BC. It’s best known to house one of the largest chaityas (prayer halls with a stupa) in the country. This hall features breathtaking sculptures of men, women, and animals like lions and elephants. There’s also plenty of intricate inscriptions to take note of. Not to mention, the Ekvira Temple located within is quite popular with history buffs and spiritual travellers alike. While here, spot the large windows that were cut into the rock to let light in. History has it that yesteryear monks built their shrine here since it was naturally ideal for excavation. Getting here involves a 200-350 step walk up from the base of the hill.

This masonry dam – made of stone, brick, and mortar – is located on the Indrayani river. Built in the 19th century to fulfil the need of water for steam engines, it supplies water to Lonavala and is a training ground for the Indian navy. Steps lead the way to the spot, where you can lay out a picnic spread or sit down to soak in the sun. The verdant green cover is a hallmark of the spot. As are stunning birds. Swimming is prohibited due to the inconsistency of the water flow and although the best time to visit is during the monsoon – when the flow is abundant – it can get dangerous and tricky to navigate the region so be sure to wear the right shoes and keep your eyes peeled.

Della Adventure Park

A go-to for adventurers heading to Lonavala – this is an amusement and waterpark that houses over 50 exciting activities, including paintball, bungee jumping, rappelling, land zorbing, sky cycling, archery, and dirt bike riding. Reportedly the largest of its kind in India – it has the country’s only swoop swing, highest rocket ejector, and longest flying fox. That’s not all, it also plays hosts to a range of restaurants and has a bustling nightlife. Chart out an entire day to truly experience this spot. And if you can’t get enough of the adrenaline rush, stay over at the in-house resort.

Sunil’s Celebrity Wax Museum

Perhaps the only place in Lonavala that gives you the opportunity to rub shoulders with the creme-de-la-creme of the world – this spot is helmed by renowned wax sculptor Mr Sunil Kandalloor. Featured here are sculptures of Rajiv Gandhi, Michael Jackson, Adolf Hitler, Kapil Dev, Ar Rahman, Benazir Bhutto, Dalai Lama, APJ Abdul Kalam, and more. The idea was to give locals access to the same experience as Madame Tussauds in London. And it delivers! Take pictures with the sculptors, fool around and have conversations, or just explore all the little details you may have missed while watching them on television screens.

Lohagad Fort

A part of the Iron Fort trek – the Lohagad Fort is situated 1,033 metres above sea level and is set against the backdrop of a small hill range. Verdant green cover adds to the beauty of the space, which is underlined by the presence of lakes, temples, waterfalls, and yesteryear architecture. The structure served as an important residence and fortress for the Chalukyas, Marathas, Nizams, Mughals, and more and has seen its fair share of battles. The UNESCO World Heritage Site features about 450 steps, a temple, and four large gates that are intricately designed. Head here for the picturesque views, stay for the history lesson.

Raywood Garden

If you’re out shopping in Lonavala market, pop by this former botanical garden turned public park that boasts a picturesque green cover. Come weekends, you’ll spot plenty of picnic baskets at this 25-acre mini forest-like space. You could spend a long time taking a stroll while admiring the old trees and well laid-out flower beds. Young ones, meanwhile, will enjoy exploring the well-equipped children’s park. Those spiritually inclined can pop by the Shiva temple on the premises. Although maintenance hasn’t quite been the spot’s strongest suit over the recent past, locals maintain that it does have a certain charm to it.

Lion’s Point

Perhaps one of the most popular sunset spots in the city – this is located between the Bhushi dam and Amby valley. Here, you get a front-row seat to the region’s most stunning waterfalls, verdant valleys, pristine lakes, and towering mountains – all via a cliff that comes with a sheer drop of 650 metres. It goes without saying that the pictures you take here are quite Instagrammable. The echo point is quite popular as well. Most people head here at the end of a long evening trek, when the weather’s breezy and a picturesque fog takes over. Needless to say, this one’s a must-visit place when you’re in Lonavala.

Rajmachi Fort

Another wildly popular place to visit in Lonavala, this historical monument was built by the beloved Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji. Featured here are two fortresses – Shrivardhan and Manaranjan – built on a hill in the Sahyadris to keep watch from about 915 m above. Reportedly, the fort played a strategic role in the first Anglo-Maratha war and is now a protected monument. There’s plenty to discover, between the range of ancient caves and temples as well as the most stunning viewpoints the region has. Several treks lead up to this point as well, beginning from Udhewadi village. Don’t miss out.

On offer are some of the country’s most unique experiences, including a hair-raising rollercoaster, an indoor high –speed dark roller coaster, simulator rides with Bollywood movies integrated, flume ride, and more! Lonavala Lake

Also known as the Monsoon Lake, Lonavala Lake is a picturesque spot that’s perfect for a picnic. The lake is best visited – as its alternative name suggests – when it rains and offers activities like bird watching, angling, and swimming. Fed by the Indrayani river, the green cover here will take your breath away. You could also pop by the street food stalls peppered across the region to get a bite of vada pav or other treats. Locals note that the Jalvayu road might be more popular but the Tata Power approach road is a lot cleaner if you’re heading here via Pune.

This three-tiered waterfall is believed to be the 14th highest in the country and a must-visit place in Lonavala. Located at an altitude of about 620 m it is set amidst the backdrop of the Sahyadris. Naturally, it’s a sight to behold – particularly during the monsoons, when it cascades down rocks in all its glory. At the moment, the approach road to the falls is a private property, with reports pointing to holiday home St. Mary’s Villa as the owner. Visitors are hence not allowed close by. That said, the drive to and around the spot makes it worth a visit.

Amrutanjan Point

Another popular viewpoint that features on most Lonavala itineraries – Amrutanjan Point boasts of the most picturesque views of the city of Khopoli. Set amidst rolling hills and verdant valleys, it’s an ideal spot for a picnic most any time of the year. Be wary if you’re heading here over monsoons since the path to and around the top can be slippery. Most people drive up to the spot and hang around for a few before heading back. You might even spot a few street stalls around to grab a bite from. If you enjoy long drives, add this spot to your destination.

Tungarli Lake

Right alongside one of the oldest dams in India – dating back to the 1930s British India – Tungarli is often packed with tourists. Set against, like many others on this list, the Sahyadri Ranges – this spot is the ideal destination for a long drive. Verdant green cover and pristine waters make for an ideal picnic experience as well. There’s a 600 m uphill road to reach this location – leading to the most stunning waterfall. The flora here will take your breath away as well. Eateries around the area are reportedly open only on the weekends and the best time to head here continues to be around early in the day – around sunrise.

Duke’s Nose

Named after the erstwhile Duke of Wellington – owing to its uncanny resemblance to his nose when in a reclining position – this is a popular viewpoint in Lonavala. It boasts of the most stunning views of the Sahyadri peaks. That aside, it also plays host to adventure sports like trekking, rock climbing, and hiking – with the path to the top being steep, rocky, and complex to navigate. There’s also a small temple nearby to pay your respects at.

Tikona Fort

Adding to the line up of stunning historical forts around Lonavala is this spot that gets its name from its triangular shape. Perched at a height of 1066 metres above sea level, it has seen many battles. This meant that its ownership switched between Shivaji Maharaj to the Mughals several times over. Primarily, however, it was the prime fortress of the Marathas, who called it vitandgad. Featured here are a cluster of small caves, guard tower, broken temple, stone wheel, and water tanks. Right at the top, you’ll discover a Buddhist cave as well. Needless to say, you could spend hours exploring this spot.

This stunning waterfall – located at a height of about 110 m – is perhaps one of the most underrated places in Lonavala. You’d need a bit of experience trekking to get to this spot – best visited during the monsoon. The journey – which spans about five hours – involves mango trees, caves, thorny bushes, and rocky terrain. You’ll also discover several stunning birds along the way. The descent to the natural pool at the bottom is tricky to say the least. However, the pristine waters are worth the attempt. Sit down for a leisurely picnic while you’re here.

Scorpion’s Sting

This hill resembles the curved sting of a scorpion – hence the name – and covers about 38 sq.km. Despite being picturesque, it’s not the most popular place to visit in Lonavala. Located about 630 m above sea level, you’ll discover a dense forest and a pristine pond around this spot. Be wary, the path to the top is rocky and steep. Add slippery to this mix if you’re headed here during the monsoons. A few eateries close by allow for a laidback, picnic-like experience as well.

Sausage Hills

Rounding out this list is another popular trekking destination that boasts of the most stunning views of valleys, lakes, and rolling hills. Heading here involves making your way through verdant vegetation and meeting several rare species of birds. That aside, there are a few temples close by that you can pay your respects at as well. If you’ve explored most other spots in this list, this one’s worth a visit.

How to get to Lonavala from Mumbai and Pune

Most trains plying between Mumbai and Pune cross Lonavala. This includes Deccan Express and Indrayani Express – both of which stop at the Lonavala Railway Station. It takes three hours from Mumbai and about an hour from Pune to get there. If you’d like to take your car along for all the long drives we’ve listed above, hop on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. From Pune, get on NH4 and the Mumbai Express Highway. There’s a few air-conditioned and non-air conditioned buses that ply on this route as well.

Things to eat in Lonavala

While in Lonavala, don’t forget to visit street vendors and local places for a bite of chole bhature, chikki, and chocolate fudge. The Maharashtrian usal with peas, lentils, spices, and curry leaves as well as the traditional local thali comes highly recommended. Buvachi Misal is a good spot to head for these. Another place to visit when in Lonavala is the Anglo-Indian Cafe for the chikki cheesecake, nourishing bowls, and breezy ambiance.

Typically, the best time to visit Lonavala is between the months of July and September. This is when waterfalls are at their roaring best and the valleys take on a verdant quality. If you’d rather go around with clear skies to keep you company, October to February might be a better time.

             Lohagad fort divides the basins of Indrayani and Pavna. You can reach to the top of fort after passing via Hanuman Darwaja, Ganesh Darwaja, Maha Darwaja and Narayan Darwaja.

             This multi-access fort is a perfect location for trekking. So if you are game for some fun, this fort will justify your attention. For beginners, going to this place in Lonavala will be a great choice as it is comparatively easier than others due to its straight route. It is more or less like a leisure walk in the midst of lush greenery. And during monsoon, the fort looks surreal as it gets covered by fog and mist. 

Visapur fort :

            Located around 60 km from Pune and 100 km from Mumbai and standing at an elevation of about 1084 meters, Visapur Fort is one of the highest forts in Lonavala. Perched upon a lush green plateau, the fort is a very popular excursion destination among nature lovers, trekkers, and campers. What’s special about one of the three routes which take you to the top is that you would need to climb through the gushing waterfall for the most part of the trail only in monsoon season.         The fort is a part of the Lohagad – Visapur fortification and is the higher one among the two. Apart from the view of lush green surrounding in the nearby region, Visapur also holds an outstanding view of Tikona Fort, Tung Fort, Lohagad Fort, and the Pawna Lake.

Tikona Fort, also famous as ‘Vitandgad Fort’, is a triangular hill fort located near Lonavala. Perched on a high hill, the fort is a trekking destination. The small hamlet close to the fort is the Tikona path. The fort’s mammoth entrance is a special attraction. 

The Tikona fort is a great trekking destination for adventurous tourists. One can get the eye-catching views of the Pawna Dam and the forts at Visapur, Tung, and Lohagad. The fort encloses a lake, Satvahan caves and the temple of ‘Trimbakeshwar Mahadev’. The fort was built during the Silhara dynasty. There is a temple on top of the peak. The view of the Pawna dam, Kathingad, and valleys from the top is breathtaking, hence its one of the most explored place in Lonavala. 

4) Tung fort

Tung fort trek in Pune near Lonavala is a great place for hiking. Hikers normally explore the pair of Tung & Tikona fort in a single visit. It is also popular as Kathingad fort. Kathingad or Tung Fort is a great trekking spot near the Lonavala region. This fort is known for its challenging approach to reach the top. Kathin means ‘Difficult’ in Marathi hence the name of the fort is Kathingad.

            The fort is conical and consists of strongly fortified walls, ramparts and also has several bastions. It has steep climbs with a very narrow route on the edge of the mountain throughout. The fort premise also has a rocky staircase that opens to a water cistern. A steep climb on grassy slopes leads to the ruins of a temple at the summit. The forts of Korigad, Tikona, Visapur, and Lohagad can be clearly viewed from the top of Tung Fort. 

Korigad is a beautiful fort located on top of a hill, around 20 km from Lonavala, near Aamby Valley. This is an easy 6 km trek, with stone-cut steps leading up for the most part. The fort has an elevation of about 3000 feet, so it gives you wide panoramic views in all directions. Once you get to the top, you’ll be able to examine the massive gateway to the fort, as well as 6 ancient cannons, the largest of which is the Lakshmi Toph near the Koraidevi temple. Apart from this, there are two lakes, some water tanks, and a temple to see. The highlight, however, is the view: the lakes of Aamby Valley, the lush forested hills around, and the highway in the distance.

         In the monsoon, the Korigad trek route is green and delightful, and the water tanks at the top are full. From the top of the fort, you’ll get great views of the surrounding landscape. This offers abundant opportunities for photographers. Korigad is also a popular night trek spot and offers plenty of spots to camp out at the top.

6) Rajmachi fort

Cuddled on the majestic ranges of Western Ghats, Rajmachi Fort is a stunning historical fort in Lonavala. Rajmachi Fort which is a well-known tourist attraction of the state. Rajmachi which is also called Udhewadi is a small village found in the Sahyadri Mountain. There are mainly two forts in Rajmachi one being the Shrivardhan Fort and the other is the Manaranjan Fort. The Rajmachi Fort is an amazing place for the trekkers which makes tourism even more interesting.

         The true beauty of Rajmachi is seen during the monsoons when the place adorns a completely new look. The lustrous streams, pearl-like waterfalls, and the lush green meadows endeavor a verdant look to the landscape which is a treat to the eyes. There are several caves and monuments which can be explored in the fort. Among the other places to visit in the village is the beautiful Lake which is a delight to the photographers. The surrounding of the lake is quite picturesque. 

7) Tiger point / Lions point

Tiger point at the top of Lonavala hills gives a heavenly view of the sunset and sunrise scenes. The valley view as such from this point is amazing. A must visit place for all those visiting Lonavala. Tiger’s point or Tiger’s Leap is an unusual name given to this place due to the resemblance of the shape with that of a tiger leaping into the valley. 

         The plush green, eye-soothing views of the valley, misty mornings, and cool breeze make Tiger’s Leap make it one of the most beautiful places to visit in Lonavala in rainy season. Tiger Point is a viewing point, where you can watch sunrise and sunset with mountains and a valley in view. Most hill stations across India have one of these points and Lonavala is no different. But no visit to a hill station is complete without visiting one of these “points”. Tiger Point is also known as Lion Point as the two names are used interchangeably. 

8) Table top (Now Closed)

The name was given Table-Top due to a flat Hill bed on the point. This point offers breathtaking views of the river valley and aerial view of the Rajmachi Fort in Lonavala. This place comes alive during the monsoon season with waterfalls in the background. As the name suggests, many Bollywood movies were shot here.

            During the monsoon season, this place gets covered with clouds. The fog or the clouds were too much that you feel that you are in heaven. The scenery around this place in Lonavala is superb and the much-anticipated part is you are above the clouds which is a really unbelievable experience. The view from this place is spectacular, to say the least, and one can see the Kune waterfall on the opposite side of the mountain, and the Mumbai Pune Expressway right below.

9) Duke's nose

Duke’s Nose in Lonavala is a cliff that provides a breathtaking view of Sahyadri hills. The pinnacle of Duke’s Nose is locally known as Nagphani as it resembles the hood of a cobra. Famous for adventure sports like rappelling, rock climbing, and valley-crossing, it attracts numerous trekkers round the year. You can walk or hike up this summit from the Khandala station easily. 

The trek might seem inaccessible but it is rather easy. There is a Mahadev temple on the top which is a simply unmissable spot if you are touring around. This attraction near Lonavala presents a mind-boggling down hill view of the plains. Weather is pleasant here in the early mornings and evenings.

10) Narayani Dham Temple

Shree Narayani Dham Temple is located in Lonavala. We just visited this temple as we want to spend some time in Lonavala. After going there we found that it is a very beautiful place.           Temple is constructed in a wide area. Still, it is very neat and clean. There is a very holistic atmosphere in the temple campus. You can have peace of mind there. The best time to visit the temple is during the months of monsoons. The temple is the place where you look for inner peace and serenity. The temple was constructed in 2002 and is a beautiful white marble structure. The main deity of the temple is Maa Narayani and on either side of the main shrine are shrines dedicated to Ganapathi, Hanuman and other Hindu deities. The deities are beautifully decorated with glittering jewelry. The entrance is a 4 storeyed structure, there are fountains lined up on the pathway from entrance to temple.

11) Karla caves

Rock-cut structures are one of the most primitive forms of architecture found in several parts of India. The Karla Caves in Lonavala, built by Buddhist monks, are one of the finest examples of this architectural style.

          The most remarkable feature of the cave is its arched roof supported by wooden beams which have astonishingly survived the onslaught of elements for more than 2,000 years. The Wooden Umbrella above the Chaitya is unique in the Buddhist caves around the world.

There is absolutely no sign of any corrosion. It is the finest example of the kind perhaps in the world. At the entrance of the principal cave is the temple of Goddess Ekvira visited by thousands of devotees from the coastal region around Mumbai during the annual fair falling in April (Chaitra) and also during Navratri. Ekvira temple is on the right side of the main cave while at the left side is a lofty column with three lions on its top.

12) Bhaja caves

The Bhaja Caves is a series of 22 rock-cut caves built between 2nd century BC and 2nd century AD and the most prominent among them is the chaityagraha which has a vaulted ceiling shaped like a horseshoe and wooden architecture. There are caves with pillared verandah and fascinating reliefs adorn them.

As we climbed about 170 steps to reach the top, we noticed extraordinary carvings depicting women in elegant classical dance positions, playing instruments that looked like a tabla. One of the most significant highlights of these caves is the stupas. These caves are a star attraction for tourists who are highly delighted to visit this ancient architectural marvel. One can easily reach the place in Lonavala through different means of transportation.

13) Bedse caves

Bedse Caves are situated in Maval taluka. Just 450 Steps to climb. The history of the caves can be traced back up to the 1st century BC. There are two main caves. The best-known cave is the chaitya (prayer hall) with a comparatively large stupa, the other cave is a monastery – vihara. Both caves are facing eastwards so it is recommended to visit the caves early morning, as in sunlight the beauty of carvings is enhanced. There is also a small “Stupa” outside to the right of the main caves.

             Mawal Region can’t be completed without Bedse. An easy hike through steps leads to the caves. Also close to the Bedse caves are the famous foursome of Lohagad, Visapur, Tung and Tikona forts adjoining the Pawana Dam.

            The best time to visit Bedse Caves in Lonavala is the rainy season as the hills are filled with lush greenery during that time. Also, many small waterfalls are created that can only be enjoyed during the rainy season. As this is one of the lesser-known spots, not many tourists throng the place, so makes it easy to enjoy the views.

14) Bhushi dam

Bhushi Dam in Lonavala is among the best weekend getaway for the tourists as well as the locals. Engulfed by the carpeted hills, the forcing water of the dam makes a huge natural water park that rejuvenates the visitors. The view of the Bhushi Dam water, when overflows over an array of steps and then pass through the rocky terrain, is really mesmerizing. 

          During monsoons, the water gushes out of the dam to easily accessible steps and rocky terrain here. It is accompanied by rays of warm sunshine and scenic hills surrounding this place. This attraction in Lonavala makes for a great picnic spot for the people of Mumbai and Pune. It is hard to find space on the steps here during the peak season. You can sit on the stone steps and splash water on your friends in a playful mood. However, swimming is not allowed here due to the inconsistent flow of water.

15) Kune waterfall

Kune Falls is located centrally within Lonavala and Khandala valley is three tired waterfalls with a total height of two hundred meters (six hundred feet); the highest drop being a hundred meters. The waterfall is the 14th highest waterfall in India.          The fall is a complete scenic waterfall situated near the Kune village in Pune. It is one of the famous waterfalls in Maharashtra and also one of the best places to visit. It lies at an altitude against the stunning backdrop of the famous Sahyadri mountains. The place is surrounded by lush green vegetation and provides a great visual experience.            The falls are in its profusion during the period of monsoon and a large number of tourists are attracted to watch its majestic view, flowing down with a huge gush. One visits Kune Church which is situated with close proximity to the waterfalls and also provides a landmark to reach this amazing waterfall. The ideal time to visit this fall is in the mid-monsoon.
