What to Know About Carnival’s BOLT Roller Coaster Before You Ride

The Bolt roller coaster (or the official name: BOLT: Ultimate Sea Coaster) on Carnival Cruise Line is one of the most noteworthy attractions ever to hit cruising. For years cruise ships have gotten bigger with more to offer, but never before had something like a roller coaster… at sea… been introduced.

carnival cruise new ship with roller coaster

It’s a major attraction on some Carnival ships, but there are a number of ins and outs that you should know before you take a ride.

Is Bolt Free To Ride? How Much Does It Cost?

While Carnival is known for having a lot included with the cruise fare, the Bolt roller coaster is an extra cost. At the time of this writing, the price is $15 per person, per ride. So if two kids want to ride, that’s a total of $30.

Which Ships Have Bolt?

Currently only Carnival’s newest and largest ships have the Bolt roller coaster. That includes Mardi Gras, where the ride debuted, and Carnival Celebration. Another ship in the class — Carnival Jubilee — debuts in late 2023. It is expected to also have the ride, although that could change.

How Long Does The Ride Last?

While any roller coaster at sea is impressive, it is still bound by the limitations of fitting on the cruise ship. For that reason, the ride is actually fairly short. It makes two laps around the top of the ship, lasting about one minute before coming back into the starting point.

How Old Do You Have To Be To Ride?

Traveling with kids? One good thing is that there is no age limit to ride. However, there are height and weight requirements that must be met. For that reason, younger kids (those younger than 8 years old) aren’t likely to be able to ride.

Are There Weight/Height Minimums And Limits?

carnival cruise new ship with roller coaster

Yes. To ride Bolt, you must be a minimum of 4 feet, 4 inches tall (52 inches), up to a maximum of 6 feet, 5 inches tall (77 inches). Those below or above that height won’t be able to ride.

While no minimum weight is listed, the maximum is 300 pounds per rider.

There is a station at the base of the ride to check that you meet the requirements (don’t worry, if you’re a little heavy it just shows a red/green light, not your weight).

How Many People Can Ride At Once?

Bolt is a one or two-person ride. When the ride is operating, there are two different carts on the track at once, each offering two seats. You can choose to ride solo or with someone else. So the most on any car at once is two, and the most on the track at once is four.

How Do You Sign Up To Ride?

To ride Bolt, you need to sign up within the Carnival Hub app. Within the app’s menu is a section for the coaster. Click there and it will offer up the times that are available to ride.

Bolt operates in 30-minute windows for riders. So you sign up for a time — say, 4:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. — and you simply show up to ride anywhere within that window. Once a time is confirmed, the app will walk you through the cost and policies before confirming your ride.

When it’s time to actually ride the roller coaster, just make your way to the stairs at the base of the coaster and check-in with the staff. They will confirm your reservation and then send you up the stairs to ride.

How Fast Does Bolt Go?

carnival cruise new ship with roller coaster

This roller coaster is unique in that you have a throttle handle and a “boost” button. So you can actually control your speed somewhat. Want to go faster? Turn the throttle handle toward you and hit the boost. Want to slow down? Let the throttle turn back forward to decrease speed (you’ll still move and won’t stop on the track).

The top speed on Bolt is said to be around 40 mph. There is a speedometer on the cart, but during our ride we were too focused on taking in the view and the rush of adrenaline that we forgot to check how fast we were going at full throttle.

Is Bolt Scary?

If you love thrill rides, then you’ll love Bolt. Unlike a conventional roller coaster, there are no huge drops or inverted loops. Instead, it’s a fast start, a big horizontal loop around the back of the ship before a fast exit to some up and down parts of the track before you circle back around the funnel. It’s fast, it’s fun, and it’s exhilarating, but we’d be hard to call it “scary.”

Is There A Dress Code For Bolt?

Carnival is known for being casual, but there are some requirements on what to wear. First, you must wear closed-toe shoes. As well, pants or shorts are also required (no riding in a bathing suit alone). If you wear glasses, Carnival’s policies say they must be held with a head strap if they are going to be worn.

Can I Bring My Camera? Where Do I Put My Stuff?

The rules say that you have to empty your pockets before you ride. So things like keys, wallets, and phones need to be taken out. And sorry, no cameras (even GoPros) are allowed on the ride.

If you have things with you, there is a small spot with cubby holes where you can place your items while you ride. When you exit the ride, just remember to pick them up.

What’s The Cancellation Policy For Bolt?

Bolt has a fairly liberal cancellation policy. If you sign up to ride and decide not to — for whatever reason — you simply need to cancel two hours before the appointment time in order to get your money back.

So if you signed up for a 2:00-2:30 p.m. time slot, you’ll need to cancel by noon to get a refund. If Carnival has to cancel the ride due to weather or a mechanical issue, then you’ll be refunded automatically.

When Is The Best Time To Ride The Coaster?

carnival cruise new ship with roller coaster

Bolt is open on both sea days and port days. It would seem to make sense that if you are at sea, it’s a great activity to do since it can help fill the day. In port, you’re likely to be off the ship.

However, we think it is smart to sign up to ride during port days. We’ve found that during days at sea with the ship moving, the wind can be much stronger. So a ship moving 20 mph into a 15 mph breeze sees winds of 35 mph. The staff takes into account weather — especially wind — when operating the ride. So if it’s too windy, then the coaster won’t run. During one cruise we had two days at sea at the end of the trip where we planned to ride. Due to wind, the coaster didn’t run either day.

Instead, the wind is likely to be much calmer while the ship is stopped in port. Signing up for a later time on port days can give you the chance to explore earlier in the day and then ride once you get back on the ship.

What If The Time I Want To Ride Is Full?

The lines for Bolt never seem to be too long. That may be due to both the cost and the fact that Carnival limits riders per 30-minute window.

So say you want to sign up but see that there are no convenient times available. Are you out of luck?

In this case, just occasionally check back in on the app. We’ve found that sometimes time slots open up as others cancel. As well, if there is a time that’s convenient to you, it doesn’t hurt just to show up at that time and see if the staff can fit you in. At worst, they will just say no.

Is Bolt Worth The Money?

carnival cruise new ship with roller coaster

There’s no doubt that Bolt is a lot of fun and something you can’t do anywhere else. But it’s also pricey — $15 per person for a one-minute ride isn’t cheap. So is it worth it?

Having ridden the coaster and paid the price, our opinion is that at $15 per ride it’s something that’s worth doing once… but not over and over. During our cruise, it’s one of the highlights that still stands out. It’s exciting, offers some great views, and a totally unique experience. So we’re glad that we did it.

If it were free, then we’d ride it several times during a cruise as it was that much fun. But at the current price, we’re happy to experience it once but can’t justify paying that much again.

A roller coaster in the ocean: What Carnival Cruise Line's BOLT ride is like

Portrait of Nathan Diller

As I hurtled toward the Caribbean Sea , I felt a pang of regret: maybe riding a roller coaster on a cruise ship wasn’t the best idea for someone with a fear of heights.

I clutched the handles on my motorcycle-like car tight, questioning why I had committed to not just one but two laps around the course on Carnival Cruise Line’s BOLT: Ultimate Sea Coaster. But a few seconds in, something changed.

Surrounded by open blue water at the top of the line’s newest ship, Carnival Jubilee , I was taken with the view – so much so that the knot in my stomach I developed while waiting in line all but dissolved. The ride was fast but mostly smooth (though on one uphill section of the track, I felt myself lift off the seat a bit, but my seat belt did its job). BOLT reaches up to 40 mph, but guests can control their speed.

Zipping around the ship’s funnel, I forced myself to keep my eyes open the whole time (the opposite of my usual roller coaster coping strategy). Even the best theme parks I’ve visited haven’t had settings quite like that, and I didn’t want to miss it.

Story continues below.

Who can ride BOLT?

Passengers must meet height and weight requirements (they have to be between 4 feet 4 inches and 6 feet 5 inches tall, for instance). Children under 12 have to ride with someone 15 or older. Cars can accommodate two riders.

Guests with “structural body damage” cannot ride, according to a sign posted at BOLT’s entrance. "The sign pertains to physical impairments impeding guests' safety," a Carnival spokesperson said in an email. "For instance, a guest who cannot hold on to the handlebars would not be able to ride BOLT."

The roller coaster is also not recommended for guests with other medical conditions or limitations, including high blood pressure; neck, back, or joint problems; or those who are pregnant.

How much does BOLT cost?

The roller coaster costs $15 per person. Carnival also offers a family pack, offering three rides for the price of two. Each ride includes two laps around the track.

What other activities does Carnival Jubilee have?

BOLT debuted Carnival’s Mardi Gras ship, in 2021 and was billed as the first roller coaster at sea, but the ride is only one of many activities onboard Jubilee:

◾ Lone Star Tailgate: Jubilee, which sails out of Galveston, leans into its Texas roots (there’s even a Texas star on its bow). So, it’s only fitting that the ship hosts a Lone Star Tailgate on every voyage. The deck party is divided into four quarters (a la football), with a cattle roping competition – using steer horns attached to hay bales – a race on stick horses, live music highlighting Texas artists and more.

◾ Carnival Kitchen: Food is a major draw for many cruise passengers, and Carnival Kitchen allows them to try on a chef’s apron – literally. The venue features a range of culinary arts classes taught by the line’s staff, from pasta making to sushi 101. While the classes are available on other ships, the line debuted a new option featuring recipes from the line’s Chief Culinary Officer, Emeril Lagasse, on Jubilee.During my sailing, we made dishes like Shrimp and Okra Gumbo with Filé and New Orleans Pasta. Even for me, whose greatest culinary achievement is making scrambled eggs for breakfast, the steps were easy to follow. Plus, we got to enjoy the fruits of our labor at the end.Prices range from $45-$65 per person, depending on the class.

◾ Kids programming: Jubilee, like many other Carnival ships, also has plenty of kid-centric programming and amenities, from the Dr. Seuss-themed library, Dr. Seuss Bookville to Build-A-Bear Workshop at Sea and The Ultimate Playground where BOLT is located (think mini-golf, a ropes course and more).Jubilee’s new Currents zone features Seaquest: A Fun Sub Adventure. The video display utilizes the space’s wave-like LED ceiling and LED portals to show viewers to places like the underwater Carnival Seacation resort and the kingdom of The Golden Mermaid (also the name of a new lounge on board). At other times, passengers can change the scenes displayed via a touch screen – such as arctic waters with orcas and penguins and a shark cave – and create their own fish, which will swim into view on the portals.

Carnival Cruise Line Releases Sneak Peek of Bolt, the First Ever Roller Coaster at Sea

Cruise director Matt Mitcham travels to Germany for a first look at the new coaster.

carnival cruise new ship with roller coaster

Thinking about whether you want to take an ocean voyage or a romp in an amusement park next summer? Turns out, you won’t have to choose.

Carnival Cruise Line shared a video of its much-anticipated Mardi Gras ship on Sunday, which features the world’s first roller coaster at sea, according to USA Today . The new coaster, BOLT, has been under construction in Munich, Germany, and is planned to debut with the Mardi Gras in February 2021 . Sadly, all U.S. cruise ships are currently out of operation due to the coronavirus pandemic .

Cruise director Matt Mitcham takes you on a tour of the BOLT in the video, showing all the ins and outs of the new, onboard ride. The track is a simple loop with a helix at one end, but it is especially unique because passengers can actually control the ride themselves.

“Every time you go, the ship will be moving to a different port. You’ll have a different view, a different moment, and then, of course, you control it yourself,” said Steve Boney, Executive Business Development of Maurer Rides.

The video shows an animated demonstration of how the ride will work, including its two-seat, motorcycle-style car that races along the track to speeds up to 40 miles per hour. “Workers have installed nearly 800 feet of suspended track for BOLT, the first roller coaster at sea, that will encircle upper decks and offer guests an exhilarating ride with dips and drops with breathtaking ocean views 187 feet above the water line,” according to Carnival spokesman Vance Gulliksen, to USA Today.

Once the ship and the coaster are complete, BOLT will have to be disassembled and reconstructed aboard the Mardi Gras, which is currently being constructed at the Meyer Turku shipyard in Turku, Finland, according to USA Today. Along with the BOLT, the ship will feature 2,600 staterooms and six themed zones throughout the ship with lots of dining and entertainment.

The Mardi Gras will debut in 2021 from Port Canaveral, Florida. Itineraries for the ship are available from launch through spring 2023, according to USA Today. More information can be found on the Carnival Cruise Line website .

$15 for 20 seconds: What it's like to ride the first-ever roller coaster at sea

Ashley Kosciolek

In the past two months, we've seen cruise ships slowly trickling back into service, with several now allowing Americans to sail from the Caribbean, Greece and the U.S. On July 31, in the first major new-ship launch since before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Carnival Cruise Line's Mardi Gras will welcome its first round of revenue passengers .

During a pre-cruise media day, I was able to preview one of the vessel's most impressive features: Bolt, the first roller coaster at sea.

So, what was it like? Read on to find out.

Bolt roller coaster facts

Bolt will set cruisers back a steep $15 per person for one lap around the 800-meter track. The ride lasts about 20 seconds at its fastest, but it can take longer, depending on the chosen speed.

Two electric cars, each carrying up to two people and evoking Jet Ski vibes, operate in tandem at different intervals, with the ability to accelerate at speeds faster than some sports cars. The person sitting at the front of the car is the "driver," and he or she decides how fast or slow the car goes, up to the maximum speed of 35 miles per hour.

The ride is suspended above the ship's outer decks, reaching 187 feet above the water, offering 360-degree ocean views and making for a thrilling experience.

Things to know before you ride

You must be at least 52 inches (4 feet, 4 inches) tall and weigh less than 300 pounds in order to ride Bolt. The maximum height allowed is 77 inches (6 feet, 5 inches). Because you cannot have any loose articles in your pockets or on your body (think hats, glasses, cellphones and your cruise keycard), cubbies are provided for you to leave your belongings.

Unfortunately, that also means you can't bring recording equipment, such as GoPros or selfie sticks, with you. You'll have to ask someone to snap photos or shoot video of you before you ride or as you're riding from the decks below.

Additionally, passengers are not allowed to wear dresses, skirts or open-toed shoes in order to ride, and they must be in good physical condition and able to hold onto the handrails. Cruisers cannot be intoxicated while riding, and their clothing must be dry (no swimwear allowed).

carnival cruise new ship with roller coaster

The entrance to Bolt is on Deck 18, where you'll find stairs up to the waiting area -- an open-air space with corrals to keep people in line. Although it's covered by sunshades, it can be sweltering, especially if it's crowded.

My take on Carnival's Bolt roller coaster

After waiting in line for more than an hour, it was finally my turn. To fit the day's business-casual dress code for media, I wore a dress with sandals, which was a mistake. Word to the wise: Wear pants or shorts, and make sure you've got closed-toed shoes. My wardrobe choice resulted in my tying the dress together to form a type of romper and borrowing shoes (that were several sizes too large) from a friend.

After being weighed and changing my shoes, I was waved through a gate and directed to board one of the cars, which you straddle like a motorcycle instead of sitting inside. An attendant helped me buckle the massive seatbelt and gave my friend, the driver, instructions on how to operate the controls.

carnival cruise new ship with roller coaster

When the light turned green, we shot forward at an alarming speed, careening around turns and down hills that gave me butterflies. Although it wasn't quite as intense as most land-based coasters I've tried, it was exhilarating enough to elicit a couple of screams from me.

Thirty-five miles per hour doesn't sound like a lot, but it felt much faster, possibly due to the wide-open surroundings. It was certainly more exciting than I expected, but because you (or your driver) can decide how heavily to use the throttle, it's also a great experience for people who aren't afraid of heights but prefer a slower-paced ride.

Bottom line

So, is it worth the $15 price tag? It's not a "one size fits all" answer. I likely wouldn't pay it, but if you're someone who likes the bragging rights that come with exclusive experiences or if you've got thrill-seeking kids, it might be money well spent. Just be sure you meet all the safety requirements -- shoes included.

MARDI GRAS: FUN-FUELED VACATION INNOVATION POWERED BY LNG

When we launched our first ship, 1972's TSS Mardi Gras , we made cruising a lot less stuffy, a bit less fancy, the kind of fun everybody could enjoy. Nobody expected this ship to change the cruise world, but... here we are! So here’s a brand-new ship with a familiar name. With this Mardi Gras ® we aren't just paying homage to our first ship — in cruising circles this name suggests innovation, signals the start of something big. Oh, and this Mardi Gras still shouts “fun!” at the top of its lungs. This ship introduces Zones — six themed areas packed with brand-new experiences for eating, drinking and spectacularly getting down to fun. There's BOLT ® , the first-ever rollercoaster at sea, Emeril's Bistro 1396 ™ from yes-that-Emeril, Family Feud ™ Live for everybody... plus incredible new bars like The Brass Magnolia and Fortune Teller . Everybody can enjoy Mardi Gras , sailing now. Come on down!

MEET THE HOMEPORT

On June 4 th , Mardi Gras met her homeport for the first time... which would be the awesome Port Canaveral , of course. So maybe you should meet it too! Port Canaveral is a great place to kick off a cruise from, especially with the beautiful, brand-new cruise terminal we built specifically to be Mardi Gras’ home. Cruise you soon, can’t wait!

MEET THE GODMOTHER

When it’s almost time for a new Carnival ship to start sailing, one of the most important decisions to make is who the ship’s godmother will be. This ceremonial position is such an important choice to get right… since the choice is not only a statement about the ship, but the things we value as a cruise line. That’s why Mardi Gras’ godmother is Kimberly Jiménez , better known as Miss Dominican Republic! Kimberly has distinguished herself through her important work as a champion for at-risk youth, and as a founding member of the Dominican Republic Women’s Club. She also recently won the Spirit of Carnival award for embodying our values of fun, friendship, diversity and inclusion. Congrats and welcome aboard, Kimberly!

MEET THE CEREMONY

We kick off a new ship’s career with a naming ceremony… and ours are one part tradition and a lotta parts fun! On the tradition end, we get dignitaries like Mardi Gras' godmother, Miss Dominican Republic Kimberly Jiménez, and our own Chief Fun Officer Shaq to help make sure the champagne bottle gets broken just right for good luck. And of course we don’t forget the party end of things, inviting countless well-known well-wishers, hosting a second line parade and spotlighting Mardi Gras’ crew of 120 nationalities. Welcome to the fleet!

INSPIRED BY THAT SPECIAL PLACE VACATION TAKES US

Ok, a few places — get ready for six distinct onboard zones featuring brand-new experiences for spectacularly getting down to food, drink and fun.

Grand Central

On a Carnival cruise your vacation starts in the atrium, and on Mardi Gras ® that's in the Grand Central zone. By the way... on this ship the atrium's different . Don't be surprised if you step inside and the first place you want to look is upwards. Up there are high ceilings that hint at even more fun living on the three decks above! But look around down here too... you'll find floor-to-ceiling windows that really bring in the ocean views. Of course you'll be back here throughout your cruise, taking a break with a nice cup of coffee or a menu of great food choices at JavaBlue ™ Café , enjoying performances up on stage, or killing time fabulously at the Grand View Bar. Just wait until the sun goes down and the space slips into evening dress, transforming into an amazing show venue after dark! In Grand Central you're never far from great dining spots like Bonsai Sushi ™ and Bonsai Teppanyaki ™ , plus feel-good entertainment like Piano Bar 88 ™ and The Punchliner Comedy Club ™ .

French Quarter

If "big" and "easy" sound about right for your vacation, you might just make the French Quarter on Mardi Gras ® your home zone. What inspired this area is no less than New Orleans itself… and if all this talk of NOLA has you half as hungry as we are, you’ll be pleased to hear that our French Quarter is lined with bars and eateries worthy of their namesake. For one thing there’s the spectacularly, authentically delicious Emeril’s Bistro 1396 ™ , developed in partnership with yes-that-Emeril. Just steps away is entertainment clearly influenced by the world-renowned Crescent City nightlife — yep, The Brass Magnolia bar features not only great drinks but also hot jazz, live. What’s more, you’re just steps away from sipping mystically at the Fortune Teller bar, and definitely save time to browse some funky little shops.

Summer Landing

Go ahead and call Summer Landing 'the greatest chill spot at sea'... and we'll be right there with you, any time of year! What's three letters long and goes great with chilling outdoors? BBQ, so we're building a Guy's Pig & Anchor Smokehouse | Brewhouse ™ into this zone so it always tastes like summer here with freshly-smoked faves designed by Guy Fieri and original Parched Pig ® beers brewed just feet away. If you're wondering where the pool and whirlpool are, we're so alike, you and us... and that's why we're sure you're gonna love The Watering Hole , a poolside bar we're building for aficionados of backyard-style relaxation. And for military folks — or folks who just want to raise a glass to them — please report to Heroes Tribute ™ Lounge for great service. We know you guys like soft serve too, so we're throwing in a Swirls ™ location — one of two! And why wouldn't we? At Summer Landing, fun this cool is literally always in season.

La dolce vita is within reach at La Piazza ... and we'd know, with all the Italian seafaring spirit that's literally driving the ship. This zone stands for atmosphere and flavor, and it starts with Cucina del Capitano ® , which brings your party together for an evening of Italian favorites served family-style, while Pizzeria del Capitano makes delizioso happen for you atop a base of imported Italian flour and fresh mozzarella. Mardi Gras ® debuts Piazza Panini where the handhelds are hot and pressed, plus Bar della Rosa , where you'll sip authentic espresso drinks by day and classic Italian cocktails when the sun goes down. All this flavor and flair we’ve got in here may practically transport you straight to Italy… but don’t forget that so much of it can be enjoyed outdoors, where the sea breeze is just bellissimo .

If you’ve cruised with us before, you know Lido ... but aboard Mardi Gras ® this poolside zone features even more delicious and fun experiences among the familiar flavors. Evolving the classic poolside rum-bar was a tall order, but RedFrog Tiki Bar will be serving up the good stuff across two decks’ worth of South Pacific atmosphere. Also first-time-fresh is Street Eats , bringing together highlights from the world’s fast-good cuisine like kebab, bao buns and seriously upgraded fries. Shaq’s latest Big Chicken ™ restaurant is here, and fan-fave spots like Guy’s Burger Joint ™ , the New England-inspired Seafood Shack ™ , and BlueIguana Cantina ™ taco spot aren’t done with your taste buds yet. And for folks hoping we haven’t forgotten: yes, Lido is absolutely home to one of two Swirls ™ locations, the free soft-serve spot!

THE ULTIMATE PLAYGROUND

Don't let the name fool you — this zone is ages everybody and up. Kids, you're going to love this. And adults, the playground has grown up with you. So yay for play! Of course The Ultimate Playground starts with BOLT ® , the first rollercoaster at sea, an all-electric thrill ride that puts the power of speed in your hands. But that's only the beginning — this playground has the largest Carnival WaterWorks ™ ever with three huge spiraling slides, plus SportSquare ™ is here featuring an entire mini-golf course, full-court basketball and a ropes course. And, of course, more. Ultimate enough for you?

INSPIRED BY ALL THE BEST STUFF

Mardi Gras ® is full of fun new ways to spend your time, but definitely isn’t leaving the fan favorites ashore.

BOLT: ULTIMATE SEA COASTER

Aboard Mardi Gras ® you’ll meet BOLT ® : the fastest — and first! — rollercoaster at sea. Strap in and zoom your motorcycle-style speed machine around an open-air course high, high above sea level. You know how on most rollercoasters... actually, never mind. Forget other coasters because this all-electric thrill ride puts you in the driver’s seat. That means you actually get to control how fast you go, so hit the gas and try for the fastest time, go for the biggest thrill — plus some amazing 360° ocean views! And for the folks who choose to chill: go light on the pedal, and this just might be the coaster for you!

The Brass Magnolia

Think about the fruity Hurricane cocktail or the stately Sazerac — for ages now, these hometown heroes have been ambassadors for New Orleans ‘credo of fun, flavor and just plain good times. So of course we’ll be serving up classics like these at The Brass Magnolia! You’ll also find a swingin’ jazz trio keeping things nice and hot … and it takes only one look at the décor to feel as if you just stepped into an elegant Southern estate. So come on down and let a white-coated bartender know what your pleasure is. Among the menu of Crescent City mainstays, we suggest starting off with a true connoisseur’s local favorite … the Brandy Crusta .

Fortune Teller

If you’ve strolled along New Orleans’ French Quarter in the evening, you’re not alone in feeling that mysteries and surprises lie around every corner. A French Quarter-styled zone on a new ship wouldn’t be complete without an unassuming little bar that feels like it’s always been there. On Mardi Gras ® , that’s Fortune Teller! Spirits truly abound here, and our unnaturally talented bartenders will be pleased to conjure up recipes like the all-black New Moon , the changes-color-before-your-eyes Abracadabra and the Golden Galaxy … actually made with a bit of real gold. Call us supernatural, but we’re sensing vacation fun in your future.

Family Feud Live

The show has been delighting viewers at home for generations, but you never had the chance to buzz-in on a cruise ship… until now! Carnival ships are the only place you’ll find Family Feud™ Live, and on every sailing we’ll be hosting games on an authentic Family Feud™ set — right down to the iconic Face-Off podium, plus all the excitement of Fast Money. Family Feud Live will be emceed by none other than your cruise director, so if you’re game, sign up your team of five for an audition… and make sure they bring that Family Feud spirit. And, of course, everybody’s welcome to grab a seat in the audience to catch all the hilarious action!

RedFrog Tiki Bar

Let's recap what we know about the mysterious RedFrog so far. He's cute, he knows how to chill… and flavor is everything to the little guy. We only just found out about the years he spent soaking up the sun among the grass skirts and frangipani flowers of the South Pacific where, he would tell you, it’s easy being red. You'll find some of his favorite recipes from those days on menu at the first-ever RedFrog ® Tiki Bar — sip a Polynesian Punch, try a Jungle Bird, or get a little tongue-twisted ordering a Red's Rum Jumper. This poolside bar on Mardi Gras ® spans two decks and transports you right to the land of Tiki.

For those who flock to waterparks just ready to make a splash, we’d suggest sliding on over to WaterWorks ™ aboard Mardi Gras ® . Three large-scale spiraling slides, a giant dumping bucket, twin racing slides and more — you know, the works — are all practically overflowing for your hydro-delight. When you spot the big slides on board you’ll see that they mean business, splashy business: Blue Lightning ™ is packed with headfirst, high-speed twists and turns, while Orange Thunder ™ starts you off standing before propelling you down into a world of wetness… and of course, our signature Twister ™ slide keeps on thrilling splash-seekers.

HAVANA BAR & POOL

On Mardi Gras ® you'll find the Havana Bar ™ & Pool. Good find — the relaxation pool is an exclusive retreat to paradise, and the bar becomes a hot dance spot when the sun goes down. Grab a seat at the bar and order up a handcrafted Cuban cocktail like a traditional daiquiri or classic mojito. This bar is just steps from the pool, whose ocean view and atmosphere mingles with the bar's own, for a bit of that old-time Cuban resort flavor.

SERENITY ADULT-ONLY RETREAT

Somebody at Carnival knows just what you need, and it's pretty much exactly the Serenity Adult-Only Retreat ™ . Look, you'll still be on the same ship as the kids, the hoopla, and all the Carnival-style excitement... but you could easily forget, because when you're at Serenity you could not be further from it all. The world you'll find yourself in is one of complete peace, sea breezes and, of course, a nearby bar. It's the place to get done the kind of stuff you just can't seem to do anywhere else — reconnect with your partner, finish that book, or do absolutely, blissfully, nothing at all.

CLOUD 9 SPA

True or false: cruises are a time for relaxation. Our answer: whether you're all action all the time, or chill to the core, everybody needs a chance to take it easy! And nobody will find an easier spot than Cloud 9 Spa ™ aboard Mardi Gras ® . This is an oasis built from the ground up for relaxation, from a full complement of traditional spa services like massages, facials, body wraps to the carefully-designed climates of Cloud 9's thermal suites... rooms swirling with moist or dry air, each heated very precisely. It turns out it's true: anyone can find a reason to say 'ahhh' at Mardi Gras's Cloud 9 Spa.

PLAYLIST PRODUCTIONS

When was the last time you got up and grooved... at the theater? Playlist Productions ™ takes songs you know and presents them like you’ve never known them before. Past favorites become full-blown musical productions featuring multi-talented performers absolutely bringing down the house with song, dance... and superstar attitude. With tunes from fan-favorite divas, crooners or rockers, each show has a different theme — and of course, a completely different playlist! Get ready for heartfelt emotions, straight-up bouncy fun, or something in-between — all types are welcome to get down here.

WISH MARDI GRAS ® HAD EVEN MORE FUN?

INSPIRED BY BOTH MMM & YUM!

Whether it’s casual munching or sit-down elegance you’re hungry for, we can’t wait to share all this dining variety with you.

You’ll detect some delicious Chinese and Mexican culinary traditions in the atmosphere at Chibang! ™ , our new restaurant… but even more importantly, you’ll notice them on your plate! We’ve brought together favorite dishes from the two cuisines, into an amazing menu that invites you to spread your culinary wings across the Pacific. Try a little from each side by mixing, matching and sharing in a dinner of flavor explorations. (Plus cocktails made from authentic ingredients!) Or stop in to Chibang! for a casual lunch that features noodle and burrito bowls based on our favorite ingredients from both of these worlds. Tip: Great news! Your first meal at Chibang! is on the house… and additional visits are just $8.

Rudi’s Seagrill

Rudi’s Seagrill ™ is the brainchild of cookbook author and master chef Rudi Sodamin. He has years of experience pleasing palates of vacationers… and this guy loves serving up a smile as much as Carnival does! But he’s serious about seafood, and an evening at Rudi’s proves it through the courses. Enjoy selections like seafood bisque and crab-stuffed lobster tail imperial — all served with an elegant flair that pays proper tribute to the beauty of the ocean from which so much fun, and flavor, arises.

Street Eats

Some of the world’s favorite flavors aren’t found in restaurants, but on the street in trucks, stalls and carts where flavor, convenience... and quality matter. That’s right, when you’re just feet from the chef, you know they’re cooking to impress! Street Eats is Carnival’s tribute to this food phenomenon, debuting aboard Mardi Gras ® with three ever-changing open-air stations. The first, Steam Dream , specializes in the steamiest stuff this side of the spa, featuring favorites like bao buns and pot stickers. Then there’s Mad Sizzle , which puts the “skill” in skillet with the likes of kebab and satay. And we’re definitely not about to forget Time Fries , which serves up every cruiser’s dream: fries loaded up with culinary creations from our chefs, like cheesesteak fries! On Mardi Gras you may be far from the street, but flavor’s right around the corner.

Emeril’s Bistro 1396

Mardi Gras ® sets sail with Emeril Lagasse's first-ever restaurant at sea: Emeril's Bistro 1396 ™ . Everybody knows about Emeril's love for Creole cuisine, and now you'll enjoy the authentic bayou flavors and fun New Orleans is known for on your vacation. If you haven't had the pleasure, we're talking about fried oysters, duck & sausage gumbo, po-boy sandwiches, fresh ceviche and more. We're serving up Emeril's faves all day… and because flavors this big don't just sleep in, we do some great ones for breakfast too! Raw bar, incredible desserts and Crescent City atmosphere round out the experience.

Big Chicken

When Shaq tells you to build a chicken joint on board, you start warming up immediately. The big guy brings his poultry know-how and good taste to the seas with Big Chicken ™ on Mardi Gras ® . Just like Shaq’s a multitalented entertainer, his restaurant is no one-trick chick. Step up to the counter for lunch or dinner and walk away with your choice of chicken sandwiches, crispy chicken strips or juicy fried chicken baskets... plus side dishes like potato salad and jalapeño slaw. Early-morning buzzer-beaters are invited to enjoy a breakfast of classics like chicken biscuits, a three-cheese omelet or our biscuit/egg combo featuring bacon or sausage. Snoozers are invited, too — breakfast is served until 3!

Bonsai Teppanyaki

It’s a meal, a performance, and it’s definitely unforgettable. The Bonsai Teppanyaki ™ experience is set to delight guests aboard Mardi Gras ® . Take a little time out of vacation to sit down to a selection of tempting appetizers, before your chef prepares the main course featuring selections of meats, tofu, fish, shrimp or lobster… right at your table. In the teppanyaki tradition — and Carnival’s tradition of fun — expect an interactive, satisfying meal full of surprise and delicious delight.

Bonsai Sushi

So maybe you’ve had sushi before, but have you tried it at Bonsai Sushi ™ ? This is Carnival’s onboard seafood-and-soy-sauce spot, and we think you’ll enjoy our latest location, aboard Mardi Gras ® . Dine indoors or out amidst carefully-pruned bonsai trees, while enjoying a delectable menu with sit-down service. Rounding out the meal: soups, sides, sakes and desserts. So the next time you’re taking a stroll down the onboard promenade, stop at Bonsai Sushi for a roll, a box or maybe order a whole sushi ship — seaborne satisfaction for two.

Guy's Pig & Anchor Smokehouse | Brewhouse

With choices like brisket, sausage, baby back ribs and dry-rubbed chicken, our pros do the smoking right there over hickory wood before serving them up at your table. You’re in Guy Fieri’s house — Mardi Gras ® has Guy’s Pig & Anchor Smokehouse | Brewhouse ™ . Now about the brews: this house of BBQ tradition doesn’t just satisfy your hunger — you’ll also enjoy our all-new, exclusive line of Parched Pig ™ craft brews. There’s a smoked porter, a farmhouse ale, a hoppy IPA and a toasted amber, all brewed just feet from your table. Tip: Come by and check out the free menu at lunchtime, plus live music and lively atmosphere all day.

Seafood Shack

A good seafood dish… mmm, quite the catch. However you like yours — roll, bowl or platter — Seafood Shack ™ is Mardi Gras's place for you to cast your net. Imagine a seaside spot in New England, where the locals gather for great meals served with a bit of a breeze and a lot of a view. (That said, nowhere on land will you get 360-degree ocean views like ours!) Look to Seafood Shack for rustic favorites like Crab Cake Sliders, Lobster BLT, Fried Buffalo Shrimp, Snow Crab and more. Steer a course for Mardi Gras ® ... that’s where you’ll find this little shack by the sea, wherever in the world you happen to be!

Fahrenheit 555 Steakhouse

Haute cuisine meets atmosphere at Fahrenheit 555 ™ , a dining experience that stands toe-to-toe with some of the best steakhouses on land. Except this one’s at sea — aboard Mardi Gras ® . Ours features your choice of steak cuts, lobster, lamb and more… and inside, there’s even a full bar that pours great pairings. These are the building blocks of an amazing experience — delectable elements that combine with great service to offer an evening to remember.

Cucina del Capitano

At Cucina del Capitano ® on Mardi Gras ® , who you’ve got gathered around the table is truly as important as what’s being served there. At our table you’ll enjoy delicious Italian favorites — we serve them family-style because we know that sharing large plates and sharing tales of your day’s adventures goes hand-in-hand. Speaking of which, our walls are adorned with old snapshots from our officers’ family albums, proving that the rustic Italian-farmhouse atmosphere definitely isn’t for show. Tip: Great news! Your first meal at Cucina del Capitano is on the house… and additional visits are just $8.

INSPIRED BY COMFORT ITSELF

Mardi Gras’ staterooms are major innovations in the field of helping you get ready for fun, or relaxing after a long day. (No joke — we studied it!)

STATEROOM DESIGN

Design is more than just the way things look — it's as much about how they work. And staterooms aboard Mardi Gras ® are packed with innovative changes to both. It's the way the ring-lit vanity mirror lights you evenly and shadow-free as you get ready. How the ottoman cushion flips over to serve as an extra table. And even those reading lights, recessed into the wall so you can read in bed without waking anyone! These details are really more than just details. Better comfort, lighting and storage all spring from a deep understanding we've developed around how people actually use their staterooms… and how small changes to the room add up to make the experience that much better. (Enough USB charging ports for everybody’s stuff? Oh yes!) Thoughtful, guest-centric design is how we do it… and all this in-room convenience comes paired with a fresh new look.

Havana Staterooms & Suites

Consider your Havana stateroom or suite your own island resort aboard Mardi Gras ® . Most important is the exclusive location: near the Havana Bar & Pool. This relaxation pool is your members-only spot, and the bar's a fun-for-all hotspot when the sun goes down. Indoors, all Havana staterooms feature a unique décor, but step up to a Havana Cabana for an extra-large outdoor chill space. Step into a Havana Cabana suite for even more space, plus a luxurious rain shower. (All Havana stateroom guests must be 12 or older.)

Cloud 9 Spa Staterooms & Suites

Get all the comfy details about Ocean View staterooms on Mardi Gras.

Balcony Staterooms

First roller coaster-equipped cruise ship sets sail.

bolt-cruise-coaster

Carnival rides are taking to the high seas.

Carnival Cruise Line’s newest and largest-ever vessel launched out of Florida’s Port Canaveral on July 31, becoming the first-ever cruise ship to set sail with an onboard roller coaster, Bolt .

The landmark cruise creation features an 800-foot-long track marked with twists, dips and a hairpin turn around the ship’s tunnel, industry news site Cruise Critic reported. The attraction is positioned approximately 20 feet above the ship’s 18th deck — specifically, above a miniature golf course and jogging track — and 187 feet above sea level, according to Attractions Magazine . The speed is controlled by riders, who can make it go up to 40 miles per hour.

Due to its unique location on top of a cruise ship, engineers had to get creative in making the attraction functional. It does not use gravity like most roller coasters, but rather electricity. The motorcycle-like cars (only two people can ride Bolt at a time) allow riders to go faster by turning the right handlebar back, like a throttle, or pushing a button by the left handlebar for an extra boost.

bolt-cruise-coaster

For riders who choose to go as fast as possible, the Points Guy says the experience only lasts about 20 seconds. The experience costs $15, a separate fee from the cruise’s ticket price which, the Points Guy said is worth it for thrill-seekers, but certainly not everyone.

“It was certainly more exciting than I expected, but because you (or your driver) can decide how heavily to use the throttle, it’s also a great experience for people who aren’t afraid of heights but prefer a slower-paced ride,” the reviewer wrote of his time aboard Bolt. “So, is it worth the $15 price tag? It’s not a ‘one-size-fits-all’ answer. I likely wouldn’t pay it, but if you’re someone who likes the bragging rights that come with exclusive experiences or if you’ve got thrill-seeking kids, it might be money well spent.”

Carnival Cruise Line's New Ship Will Feature the World's First Roller Coaster at Sea

BOLT: Ultimate Sea coaster will reach speeds of nearly 40 mph, and offer riders 360-degree views

carnival cruise new ship with roller coaster

Carnival Cruise Line’s highly-anticipated ship, Mardi Gras, is making a splash with the very first roller coaster at sea.

The ship, which is set to debut next year, announced a slew of exciting new features, including a motorcycle-themed coaster, a Family Feud Live! show, and expanded food offerings.

BOLT: Ultimate Sea Coaster will feature 800 feet of track reaching speeds of nearly 40 mph. The coaster will stretch around Carnival’s iconic red funnel, offering riders 360-degree views of the water 187 feet above sea level.

Carnival also revealed that Mardi Gras passengers will have expanded options for food and drink within two of its themed zones to explore, called Lido and Summer Landing.

Nestled within those zones are various eatery options, including Street Eats, an open-air venue with kiosks representing different global cuisines, the two-level RedFrog Tiki Bar, inspired by the islands, and The Watering Hole, a summer-themed cocktail and beer bar.

As if that wasn’t enough to fill stomachs, Mardi Gras will also feature an outpost of Guy Fieri’s Guy’s Burger Joint, a New England-inspired Seafood Shack, and a Mexican restaurant called Blue Iguana Cantina.

As previously announced, Shaquille O’Neal and Emeril Lagasse will also have restaurants on board.

O’Neal, who serves as Carnival’s Chief Fun Officer, will bring his Las Vegas spot Big Chicken to the ship, featuring menu items developed and taste-tested by the former NBA star.

“Big Chicken is a labor of love featuring all of my favorite fried chicken recipes developed in tandem with my mom,” O’Neal said in a statement.

Big Chicken will make its debut on Carnival’s Radiance ship earlier in 2020.

Lagasse, meanwhile, will open his first restaurant at sea on Mardi Gras, called Emeril’s Bistro 1396. In keeping with the ship’s moniker, the menu will offer New Orleans-style cuisine, with dishes like barbecue shrimp, roasted duck and andouille sausage gumbo, jambalaya and bananas foster.

The Mardi Gras will also offer “dive-in” movies, multiple pools and a sports bar, plus a hang-out space with cornhole, trivia, arts and crafts, dance classes and more.

Other zones on the ship include Grand Central, French Quarter, La Piazza and the Ultimate Playground.

Carnival announced the ship’s name in December, a nod to its very first liner, also called the Mardi Gras , which entered service in 1972.

The new Mardi Gras is the largest Carnival Cruise Line ship ever built, weighing in at a whopping 18,000 tons.

It’s currently under construction in Finland, and will make its way to Port Canaveral, Florida, in October 2020 to offer year-round, seven-day Caribbean cruises.

Which Cruise Ship Has the Best Roller Coasters?

Embark on an ocean adventure and unveil the features of Carnival Cruise's BOLT Roller Coaster, where cruising meets the thrill of a lifetime.

Book A Cruise Now

If you thought a cruise was about enjoying calm sea views, having luxurious dinners, and leisure, then think again! Carnival Cruise Line has upped the game with an exhilarating addition to their fleet — Bolt: The Ultimate Sea Coaster. On this cruise, you can cruise the high seas on a thrilling roller coaster ride while enjoying the ocean's view. Carnival Cruise’s Mardi Gras , Carnival Celebration , and the new ship – Carnival Jubilee have these special roller coaster rides for their cruisers. In this article, we will look at the thrilling details of this pioneering attraction that has reinvented cruise entertainment.

The Ultimate Bolt Sea Coasters by Carnival Cruise Lines

Bolt has quickly become popular amongst thrill-seekers on the open sea. Launched in July 2021 on the Mardi Gras, the first of Carnival's Excel-class ships, this all-electric roller coaster was designed by a roller coaster expert in Munich . It offers a pure adrenaline ride that can’t be matched.  So, fasten your seatbelts, or should we say motorcycle-style harness, as we take you through the unique features and heart-racing twists of Bolt.

Bolt is currently offered onboard Carnival's Mardi Gras, Carnival Celebration, and Carnival Jubilee — three Excel-class ships. So, pick one of these ships if you're planning a cruise and have a taste for adventure to add a little excitement to your cruising experience.

Features of Bolt Roller Coasters

  • Design: The unusual design of Bolt is the first thing that will catch your attention. Unlike traditional theme park roller coasters where passengers sit in a cart, Bolt invites riders to straddle a two-person car resembling a motorcycle. But don't worry, safety comes first. Before you go off on your fast-paced ride, a sturdy metal seat belt is attached to protect you.
  • Control in Your Hands: What makes Bolt unique is its degree of control over its riders. Usually, roller coasters have a preprogrammed speed, but Bolt literally lets you take control. Pull back on the right handlebar to control your speed. Or you could spice up the adventure even more by hitting that “boost” button on your left handlebar. The result? It is an exciting, personalized ride that gives an adrenaline rush.
  • The Electric Track: The adventure starts on the top deck near its back, where the electric track begins. You’ll be slipping and sliding around turns, drops, and hills well above the ocean at a speed of 37 mph. Also, keep an eye on that digital speedo as you grab the handles while leaning back to take in all the stunning 360-degree views out over the sea below.
  • Solo or Duo Riding: Bolt provides services both for individual travelers and those who prefer traveling with the company. You can ride by yourself or with a group of people and customize the whole riding experience so that you can enjoy it.

Requirements and Restrictions

One needs to keep some things in mind while on this ride. Although Bolt does not specify an age limit, there are restrictions on weight and height. Riders must weigh under 300 pounds, be at least 4-foot-4, and not be taller than 6-foot-5. So, as long as you meet the criteria, you're set for the experience of a lifetime.

This special experience with two laps around the track can be yours for only $15 . At this cost, you get to ride the first roller coaster at sea with an unmatched rush, and its limited availability makes it a well-worthy and amazing experience. Carnival has done a great job balancing the high-end experience and keeping it affordable to all travelers.

List of Cruises with the Bolt Ocean Roller Coaster

1. carnival mardi gras.

In July 2021, the pioneering Excel-class ship Mardi Gras proudly launched The Ultimate Sea Coaster . Mardi Gras was the pioneering series of cruising and set standards for an unparalleled cruise experience because it combined the thrill of a seaside roller coaster with the luxury of a Carnival Cruise.

A roller coaster with a top speed of 37 mph circles the ship's famous funnel. The experience is exceptionally customizable and unique due to the riders' ability to manage their speed and even increase the thrill.

Unlike traditional roller coasters, Bolt's design on Mardi Gras stands out with its motorcycle-style two-person cars. Whether you're a solo adventurer seeking the thrill of solitude or prefer to share the experience, Mardi Gras accommodates both.

2. Carnival Celebration

Carrying on the legacy of Carnival Mardi Gras ' success, Carnival Celebration gives guests an additional opportunity to experience the thrill of Bolt — The Ultimate Sea Coaster. Celebration, which debuted as Mardi Gras' sister ship, carries the custom of fusing luxury cruising with a thrilling roller coaster ride.
