My Favorite Travel Pants May Be $295, but You Can Copy the Look With These 14 Stretchy Pairs From $22

They go with everything.

the travel shop

Travel + Leisure / Tyler Roeland

When it comes to long-haul business trips , I've searched far and wide for an elegant pair of travel pants that is comfortable so that if I run into a colleague on the plane or bump into them in the lobby during check-in, I'm not giving off the wrong first impression. But alas, it's not as easy to find styles that strike that magic combination as one may think.

After years of experimenting with joggers that lost their elasticity upon first cycle through the washing machine, cute sweatpants that proved way too warm mid-flight, and travel sets I didn’t realize were itchy until I was moving around in my seat 30,000 feet in the air, I finally found a perfect pair: the tapered and effortlessly stylish Aether Eloise Travel Slim Pants .

Aether Eloise Travel Slim Pants

The outdoor clothing apparel company offers two styles of travel pants ( wide-leg and slim-fit), which are both crafted from recycled stretch fabric that’s moisture-wicking. However, I love the slim fit version (in the striking navy colorway ) for its tailored look combined with a soft, stretchy fabric that feels like sweatpants but appears more put-together. I usually wear the pants with their matching Eloise jacket for a complete smart casual look on trans-Atlantic routes, but given the variety of temperatures encountered on a travel day, I sport a cropped tank underneath — and still receive compliments on the pants!

What's more, they're comfy for long travel days but stylish for arrival: My favorite details are the split at the hem for walking quickly at the airport and deep zippered pockets for storing my passport pre-security. Opposed to leggings or baggy joggers that I tend to only wear during travel days on trips, the Aether Eloise travel pants' sleek aesthetic ensures I can repurpose them for an outfit during my time on the ground. With the right top and shoes, the pants fit the dress code for any item on my itinerary, and their functional features guarantee that they don't hinder my trip.

Since I travel frequently and hardly ever catch a flight wearing anything but the Aether Eloise Travel Slim Pants , I’m able to justify the steep $295 price tag, but I know that's not the case for everyone. If you don’t hit the road as often and prefer a pair of similar slim-fitting travel pants and joggers that don’t break the bank, read on for 14 under-$50 lookalikes.

More Travel Pants for Under $50:

Baleaf women's pants with zipper pockets .

These lightweight and quick-drying pants have a rib-knit fabric on the back, waist, and sides that elevate the classic jogger silhouette. The two deep hand pockets and two back zipper pockets are useful for storing the odds and ends you'll need on a travel day. Bonus: the fabric is wrinkle-resistant, so you don’t have to worry about standing up to a bunch of creases after sitting on an eight-hour flight.

Crz Yoga Women's High-waisted Four-way Stretch Capris

The drawstrings on these stretchy capris lean slightly more casual but the straight-cut crop is clean and can easily appear more dressed up with a black top. They're also available in sophisticated colors that wear well in the four-way stretch, premium soft, wrinkle-free, cool-to-touch material.

The Gym People Women's Joggers Pants

These classic joggers are exceptionally polished thanks to the tapered leg design and elastic waistband. Made with 80 percent polyamide and 20 percent spandex, the pants are soft on the skin and move with the body for an ultra-comfortable experience.

Eddie Bauer Women's Travel Pants

Eddie Bauer's stretchy and lightweight travel pants come in three colors, and while black is certainly the most practical, we can’t help but love the green and pink options for the more vibrant traveler. The high-rise design and elastic waistband ensure it doesn’t slip when you’re moving around in your seat or walking in between terminals and the split hem adds a hint of style to the slim-cut ankle.

Zooxing Women’s Travel Hiking Pants

Customized nylon 70D fabric makes these versatile pants perfect for travel. The frosted-button closure looks great with a plain, white T-shirt tucked in and the zipper pockets are convenient for keeping travel necessities close by. The dark blue version mimics Aether’s gorgeous color, but there’s also a selection of natural hues to suit every traveler’s style, ranging from khaki to light gray.

Hooxum Women’s Cargo Hiking Pants

These are another pair of hiking pants that are also suited to travel thanks to their lightweight and pliable design. But, according to one five-star reviewer , who said they’re her new travel pants, the pockets are “the best part.” The cinched elastic waist is flattering and the double belt loops present an option to elevate the pants even further with a statement belt (post-TSA security, of course).

Libin Women's Cargo Joggers

Dubbed the " best pants for travel ,” by Amazon shoppers, the Libin Cargo Joggers are made comfy with a drawstring waistband, which allows for an adjustable fit, and stretchy ankle cuffs that give a sporty look to the otherwise tapered-style pants.

RBX Women's Stretch Woven Ankle Pants

RBX puts an intriguing spin on classic travel pants with ribbed side details and an exciting array of color options. These pants are an easy way to make your airplane outfit feel dressy; the ribbed design flows into the waistband, too, adding a sense of unity to the pants while the majority of polyester material is ultra-breathable. If you’re someone who values pockets, note that the back two pockets are faux, which adds to the style but may not be as functional for every traveler.

G Gradual Women's Pants

If you prefer lighter colors when traveling (maybe you’re going somewhere warm?), choose from over a dozen colors of G Gradual’s versatile 7/8-length stretch ankle pants. One Amazon shopper has three pairs and raved that “they are comfy and don’t wrinkle when traveling" in their review.

Rrosseyz Jogger Pants

These high-rise joggers with an elastic, high-rise silhouette that’s incredibly slimming present a fashion-forward alternative to traditional sweatpants. The waistband stays put during strenuous activity (as the pants can also be worn for workouts), which means they’ll keep you covered through all the movement of a long travel day.

Briggs New York Women's Super-stretch Pants

These Rayon-dominant pants are touted as “career pants” by the brand, so as a travel writer, the style couldn’t be more fitting for my jet-setting lifestyle. But even the casual traveler will love the pull-on pants with a straight leg. Over in the review section, one shopper said , “I wanted dressy pants for travel and these have a nice give in the fabric while maintaining their structure.”

Quince Performance Tech Ankle Pants

Combining the aesthetic of classic work pants with the pliability of your favorite activewear, Quince’s Performance Tech Ankle Pants are ideal pants to spend multiple hours in during a day of travel. Whether you’re sitting on a plane, train, or automobile, the zipper-free pants ensure a complete range of motion and the silky smooth fabric allows for any spills to run right off.

Gap Vintage Soft High-rise Boyfriend Joggers

Gap’s boyfriend joggers are designed in a classic sweatpants material (mid-weight terry cotton) but when paired with its matching sweatshirt or even a loose, white button-down, we think they can pass for a more composed travel look — all while remaining comfortable . While the pants are as soft and cuddly as regular sweatpants, as opposed to a baggy fit, the cut hits at the ankle and features a skinny-leg design for a polished-meets-cozy aesthetic.

Calvin Klein Modern Commute Joggers

Calvin Klein

Currently 50 percent off, these Calvin Klein Modern Commute Joggers will become a staple in your travel wardrobe. The slip pockets with zip closures are discrete alongside the sleek fit of the pants with elastic cuffs to add a playful shape to their design. We love how the model dressed them up with high heels, showcasing how travelers can sport tennis shoes with them during a travel day, then change into a pair of heels to hit the ground running to a business meeting.

Kudos to Peggy Bakos of The Travel Shoppe for organizing a wonderful week-long golf trip to Coeur D'Alene Idaho for eight guests--from both California and Arizona. Thanks to Peggy's superb planning and attention to detail our golf adventure was completely stress-free and relaxing from beginning to end. Peggy organized our accommodations, tours, golf, transportation, entertainment---and everything else we could want during the week, and it all came off without a hitch. I can recommend Peggy Bakos and The Travel Shoppe 100% for any travel needs you may have.

I made it to Paris and back!! Thank you for supporting my dreams come true. I hope to enjoy more travel and research.

We had an absolutely incredible time. Undoubtably the best vacation we have had. Incredible scenery, great people, lots of fun. No issues at all. Thanks so much for your help. It is greatly appreciated. We will stay in touch. Already discussing plans for next year.

Hilda was very kind and patient with all our questions, requests, and concerns. She answered my concerns about this virus. She was very good about printing all the needed forms for my traveling buddy who doesn't have a printer. She was a joy to work with and we would do it again.

Thank you Hilda. I appreciate ALL you do for me and my family, you make our travels as problem free as possible…

The ship was amazing, and also everything that went along with it~crew, ports, excursions, food (on and off ship). It was magical every night when the sails went up! We had a blast -aside from a day of motion sickness for Michelle and Mary on the day we were at sea. Thanks also for bottle of wine! The hotel in Athens was perfect. It was a great spot to get acclimated, and with a stunning view of the Acropolis!.... It truly was a Mamma Mia experience! The only Greek word we learned was “Efcharisto” (THANK YOU)! ....~EFCHARISTO!!

We know you seek first-rate offers. Not only do we have access to the best prices, but when you plan your vacation with us you’ll instantly receive added perks like a free massage at your hotel, after-hours access to museums and sites around the world during your group tour, exclusive savings for children and shipboard credits for your cruise.

We are committed to creating the custom vacation of a lifetime just for you, ensuring that you receive incredible value on every journey.

Egypt Travel Advisory

Travel advisory july 13, 2023, egypt - level 3: reconsider travel.

Reissued with obsolete COVID-19 page links removed.

Reconsider travel to Egypt due to  terrorism . Exercise increased caution in Egypt due to  the Embassy’s limited ability to assist dual national U.S.-Egyptian citizens who are arrested or detained.

Do not travel to:

  • The Sinai Peninsula (with the exception of travel to Sharm El-Sheikh by air) due to  terrorism .
  • The Western Desert due to  terrorism .
  • Egyptian border areas due to  military zones .

Country Summary: Terrorist groups continue plotting attacks in Egypt. Terrorists may attack with little or no warning, and have targeted diplomatic facilities, tourist locations, transportation hubs, markets/shopping malls, western businesses, restaurants, resorts, and local government facilities. Terrorists have conducted attacks in urban areas, including in Cairo, despite the heavy security presence. Terrorists have targeted religious sites, to include mosques, churches, monasteries, and buses traveling to these locations.

Due to risks to civil aviation operating within or in the vicinity of Egypt, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued a Notice to Air Missions (NOTAM) and/or a Special Federal Aviation Regulation (SFAR). For more information U.S. citizens should consult the  Federal Aviation Administration’s Prohibitions, Restrictions and Notices .

When you think of the quintessential New England leaf-peeping experience, there’s a good chance you’re thinking of North Conway. Tucked into a fold in the White Mountains , the area was named by USA Today readers as one of the Top 10 Best Small Towns in the U.S. for Adventure , and for good reason: The surrounding 800,000 acres of protected White Mountain National Forest features the tallest peak in the Northeast (Mount Washington) and limitless opportunities for four-season outdoor fun. The area is at its most resplendent in autumn, though, when visitors can’t help but be gobsmacked by some of the most vibrant foliage in the United States while checking out the top-notch shops, art galleries, and restaurants.

From hiking, kayaking, and camping to skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling, there’s always something to do in the great outdoors. If you’re visiting this month, you’ll want to stop by Echo Lake State Park : Circumnavigated by a gentle one-mile trail, it’s a stunning place to soak up the foliage. Looking for something a bit more daring? Take the trails to Cathedral Ledge , one of the most popular rock-climbing spots in New England. Those who’d rather sit back and relax while taking in the sights, meanwhile, can book a ride on the historical Conway Scenic Railroad . And families will delight in the nearby amusement park Story Land , an homage to classic fairy tales.

No trip to North Conway is complete without perusing the shelves at Zeb’s General Store for penny candy and stuff you don’t need but want. The Toy Chest and the Penguin , meanwhile, are just two of the more lighthearted shops offering jigsaw puzzles, Christmas ornaments, and other fun items. Beggar’s Pouch Leather sells locally made leather goods, and for gourmands, North Conway Olive Oil Company offers a dizzying array of oils and vinegars.

For breakfast or brunch, don’t miss the Stairway Café , an unpretentious spot serving hearty delights such as wild-game sausage, buttermilk pancakes, and eggs Benedict with fresh lobster. Come dinnertime, pull up a seat at Chef’s Bistro , where the eclectic menu features everything from Korean beef lettuce wraps to garlic-and-scallion bisque.

The sprawling Eastern Slope Inn Resort. / Photo courtesy of the Eastern Slope Inn

Ideally situated in the heart of town, the Eastern Slope Inn Resort is quintessential New England, with more than 200 rooms spread among 20 buildings on 40 acres. The property’s “Fall Foliage Itinerary” suggests visits to the Sherman Farm Corn Maize , White Mountain Cider Company , and the wildly popular display of Pumpkin People throughout the Conway and Jackson area.

GETTING THERE

North Conway is an easy two-and-a-half-hour drive from Boston up I-95 and Route 16, and daily bus service from Concord Coach Lines departs from South Station.

First published in the print edition of Boston magazine’s October 2024 issue with the headline, “North Conway, New Hampshire.”

10 Great Solo Travel Experiences in Washington, DC

Embark on your own personal adventure through the nation’s capital, from free museums to concerts, outdoor recreation, tours and much more..

Sometimes you just need to be alone. Whether it's a break from the crew during your trip or you're just into checking out a city on your own schedule, DC is a wonderful place for independent, individual explorers. Thanks to its bounty of museums, free activities, scenic outdoor spaces and cultural offerings, the nation’s capital is frequently regarded as an ideal destination for solo adventures – just ask Travel + Leisure , Glamour  and  Good Housekeeping .

Take in a free museum

A visitor admires the intricate golden artwork of birds on the wall of a richly decorated room with a green and gold ceiling in an Asian art museum.

National Museum of Asian Art

Few solo activities can inspire reflection and intellectual stimulation like a tranquil visit to one of DC’s awesome (and free) museums . For both contemporary and historic art, head to the National Gallery of Art , the Smithsonian American Art Museum , the Renwick Gallery or the Hirshhorn Museum , among many others. History buffs can always have a field day in DC; must-sees include the National Museum of American History and the National Museum of African American History and Culture .

Quick tip: for the most contemplative experience, visit a museum soon after it opens (most Smithsonian museums open at 10 a.m.) or in the afternoon (2 p.m. or later).

Marvel at a live concert or theater production

9:30 Club

With so many music venues across DC, your options for a music-filled night are plentiful. Venues like Capital One Arena , The Anthem and 9:30 Club are usually top-of-mind for visitors and the largest music acts that come into town. However, places like Black Cat , DC9 , Union Stage and Howard Theatre also frequently host shows and provide a more intimate atmosphere. DC theaters also make for a great evening on the town, especially during the fall and winter when production slates are in full swing.

Enjoy a wellness day at a hotel

A serene therapy room with soft lighting features a neatly made bed, two large crystal sculptures on the windowsill, and warm, minimalistic decor including leather stools and a small table.

From enhanced fitness facilities with natural light and outdoor workout areas to special amenities like hydration stations and morning group classes, DC hotels emphasize wellness with a passion. The Marriott Marquis , The Morrow Hotel , The Darcy , Hyatt Regency Capitol Hill and Westin Georgetown Washington , DC are just a few of the locales redefining healthy stays. Others include the Ritz-Carlton, Georgetown , which features 12 wellness rooms complete with air purifiers, Tempur-Pedic mattresses and Vitamin C showers. Eaton Hotel goes even further with crystal greetings and Himalayan salt lamps along with services like yoga, reiki and sound baths.

Traverse DC’s neighborhoods

A person sits reading by the Dupont Circle fountain on a sunny day, surrounded by lush green trees and the bustle of the city in the background.

The variety of experiences found across the neighborhoods of the nation’s capital is what makes the District such a special place to visit. A solo stroll can be a great way to discover shops, restaurants, bars, attractions and activities you would not have encountered otherwise. Some standout neighborhood vibes include Georgetown ’s cobblestone streets, the hustle-and-bustle of 18th Street NW in Adams Morgan , the bounty of businesses to be found along U Street , the plethora of shops and restaurants in Dupont Circle and Logan Circle , H Street ’s revitalized digs and the vibrance of Downtown and Penn Quarter .

Take a walk or ride a bike

A cyclist sits on steps near the water, with their bike beside them, overlooking the Arlington Memorial Bridge at sunset.

When it comes to walkability, DC is always at or near the top of any ranking of U.S. cities; some even position it as one of the most walkable in the world . The nation’s capital prides itself on providing both residents and visitors alike with plenty of space for recreation, with wide bike lanes on streets, more than enough space for taking in sights on foot and a variety of running trails . Outdoor activities and adventures are plentiful; you can take in the scenery of the National Mall , scamper through Rock Creek Park , admire the Capitol Columns at the U.S. National Arboretum or visit one of the city’s numerous national parks and spectacular gardens .

Visit a market

A shopper browses fresh produce at a vibrant outdoor market, with tables full of tomatoes and other goods under a green-roofed pavilion.

There’s just something about meandering through a market – the diversity of vendors, the smells, the samples, the atmosphere, the people, the languages, the sounds – that allows for a deeper look into the spirit and soul of a city. You will get that and more (plus buckwheat pancakes from Market Lunch on weekends) at Capitol Hill ’s Eastern Market , a community hub for more than 150 years. Of course, no trip to DC is complete without a stop at Union Market in NoMa , a breathtaking food hall that also features kitchenware boutiques and much more. The District is also home to a collection of farmers’ markets , many of which are year-round.

Browse and read at a bookstore or coffee shop

Customers browse books in a brightly lit bookstore, with shelves full of colorful titles and posters on the walls above.

Solid State Books

There are few solo activities as relaxing as a cup of coffee (or hot chocolate ) and a good book. Fortunately, DC loves to read and thrives on coffee. There’s a wealth of independent bookstores that offer great browsing and a healthy dose of charm as well as cafes and bakeries that beckon with the scent of fresh-brewed roasts and spaces to kick back with your current read. Local spots get especially creative with hot and cozy drinks in the fall and winter.

Go shopping

Shop Made in DC

With so many free things to do in the nation’s capital, you’ll have some extra spending money for a shopping excursion . There’s so much high-end fashion to be found at CityCenterDC while neighborhoods such as Georgetown , Dupont Circle and 14th Street are known for their menagerie of stores. It doesn’t stop there: the city is also home to a vibrant collection of Black-owned and women-owned businesses (which are among the many locally owned shops in DC ), indie boutiques , thrift stores  and even museum gift shops .

Treat yourself at a restaurant or bar

A stylish bar with rich blue walls, adorned with framed art, features a sleek counter lined with red leather stools and a vase of fresh flowers as a centerpiece.

DC’s award-winning dining scene also features a litany of high-value spots . Some eateries/bars separate themselves from the rest with offerings that are particularly amenable to solo diners: Bistro du Jour (small Parisian-sized tables), Opaline (cozy bar seating), Chef Geoff’s West End (a big bar and high-top area), Love, Makoto (new foodie haven), Unconventional Diner (lively old-school diner atmosphere near the Convention Center), L’Ardente (a reservable pizza bar for solos), ilili (picturesque setting at The Wharf with signature cocktails), Residents Café and Bar (heated patio plus friendly bartenders) and The Grill (waterfront views and dirty martinis).

Choose from an array of themed tours

Dc Design Tours

DC Design Tours

Thanks to its landmarks and easily navigable terrain, the nation’s capital is a joy to tour. For your solo journey, you can choose from all kinds of themed excursions, from a Mangia DC Food Tour to treks through the spooky side of DC to on-the-water adventures to architecture tours to info-packed expeditions to some of the most notable spots in the District.

The artist titled the sculpture Bending Arc in reference to MLK’s words: “The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.”
