Lake Kissimmee

When it comes to Florida lakes Lake Kissimmee is probably one of the most famous lakes in Florida. It’s probably due to the proximity to Orlando and Disney World that means it’s the most well known.

The lake lies about 70 miles south of Orlando and is connected to Lake Tohopekaliga and Lake Okeechobee by a system of rivers and canals. It’s the third biggest lake in Florida at 141 square kilometers. 

It is a wonderful natural wonder and one of the central Florida lakes that are well worth a visit. It’s surrounded by lush forests and marshes and the shoreline in Lake Kissimmee State Park is beautiful. 

More than 13 miles of hiking trails weave through the surrounding area and if you are lucky you might see white-tailed deer, eagles bobcats, and lots of bird varieties. 

There are lots to do on and around the lake like swimming, horseback riding,  canoeing, boating, kayaking, or just relaxing. It’s also teeming with fish if you are an angler. 

There are picnic tables, restroom facilities, and playgrounds, and is the perfect family-friendly lake.  It’s also used a lot as a wedding destination, yes it is that beautiful. 

This is one of the freshwater lakes in Florida that offers a bit of everything and is a great place to escape if the hustle and bustle of Orlando are all a bit too much. 

Blue Cypress Lake

Blue Cypress Lake, also known as Lake Wilmington is the lake to go to if you love photography. It’s all dropping cypress trees and azure water, it honestly looks like a film set. 

It is the largest lake in the Treasure Coast and Indian River County with its headwaters at St. Johns River. There is an abundance of wildlife here and it is actually known as one of the premier fishing locations in Florida. 

The lake is 8 kilometers west of Fellsmere and makes a great day out if you love scenic lakes. It’s not a lake to swim in though or a particular family-friendly location.   It is however one of the best lakes in Florida for boating.

There is somewhat of a fairy tale quality to this place and drifting down in a canoe, kayak , or boat you can’t help but fall in love with it. The swamps, marshes, and cypress forests only seem to add to the magical quality. 

Expect to see alligators, ospreys, turtles, and lots of fish. There is a picnic area, cabins, a campground, a snack shop, and public restrooms. One of the south Florida lakes that are well worth a visit.

Lake Okeechobee

Lake Okeechobee is huge, the largest lake in Florida it is 450,000 acres and spans five counties. Called the Big O by locals it is the 7th largest freshwater lake in the States and the largest in the lower 48 states. 

Named originally by the western Georgia Indian tribe Hitchiti its name even means big water “oki,” meaning water, and “chobi,” meaning big. While it might be huge it only averages nine feet in depth. 

The lake as well as being great for fishing sits on the Florida National Scenic Trail, which is great for hiking and cycling.  Or stay a while and hike the 110-mile Lake Okeechobee Scenic Trail. 

The best way to see the lake is on one of the boat tours. Swimming and watersports do take place on the lake however this changes due to algae levels so check before you go. 

It’s a popular vacation spot with rental properties, campgrounds, and RV parks in the area so if you want to explore more and stay a while you can. 

If you are looking to visit one of the south Florida lakes in the Everglades then make it this one.

The current advice at writing this is to not drink, swim, wade, use personal watercraft, water ski, or boats in waters where there is a visible bloom of algae.

In downtown Orlando in Lake Eola Park, this lake is most famous for its fountain which is illuminated at night. Taking a paddleboat out on the lake while it’s all lit up is an amazing experience. 

The shorelines of the lake are dotted with various entertainment opportunities. The Disney Amphitheatre, Chinese pagoda, and a playground all adorn the lakeshore. You can even rent a swan-shaped paddleboat if that is your thing. 

It’s an artificial lake that developed from a sinkhole and was established in 1888 by Orlando resident Jacob Summerlin. 

It’s a beautiful area with wide sidewalks, paves patios, dining establishments a welcome center, and of course a gift shop. It is one of the central Florida lakes that are best viewed and enjoyed at nighttime .

Lake George

The second-biggest freshwater lake in Florida, Lake George is about 46,000 acres with an average depth of eight feet. It’s a perfect lake for swimming. 

At 12 miles long it is the largest lake on the St. Johns River but it is still only a tenth the size of Lake Okeechobee. The western shore is part of the Ocala National Forest.

The lake environment here is unique in that the water is fed by springs making the water brackish and therefore perfect for animals you wouldn’t find in other lakes. Blue crabs, Atlantic stingrays, and striped bass can all be found here for example. 

Hiking, fishing, wildlife viewing, bicycling, horseback riding, hunting, and primitive camping are all great activities here. You can kayak and canoe here however remember this lake has the highest number of alligators in Florida so be careful.

This is one of the north Florida lakes that has something slightly different to offer and is a great lake to go to if you love wildlife.

41 miles northwest of Orlando is Lake Dora. This is one of the freshwater lakes in Florida that is part of the Harris Chain of Lakes. 

If you are looking for a relaxing lake then this is the lake for you. It’s also great for birdwatching.  

The lake is good for boat cruising, water skiing, canoeing, kayaking, windsurfing, and of course fishing. 

The lake is close to Tavares and Mount Dora and if you need to rent equipment these are the best places to do it. If you can book a boat tour of the region they are a great way to spot the wildlife and birds.

Lake Harris

Lake Harris is one of the 1000 or so lakes that are in Lake County. Yes, Lake county is actually a thing and Lake Harris is the largest in the Harris Chain of Lakes in the Upper Ocklawaha River Basin. 

About 30 miles northwest of Orlando it’s a popular spot for those looking for something a little quieter. It’s also one of the best lakes in Florida for boating.   

The lake is a really beautiful spot and great for photographers, you will find lovely cypress trees and sandhills. And it’s great for watersports, boating, and swimming. 

It can get a little choppy on the lake mainly due to its size so if you want a slightly calmer boating or swimming experience head to the nearby Little Harris Lake.

Lake Apopka

Lake Apopka is one of the largest in the state and spans 30,000 acres. It is a nature lovers and photographer’s paradise here. 

The wildlife here is spectacular and the best bit is the Lake Apopka Wildlife Drive lets you observe it all from your car. The tour takes you about two hours. 

This is not a lake for swimming or watersports and is more of a wild nature-loving lake. Charge your camera if you visit here because you are going to need it.

Cresent Lake

Covering more than 15,900 acres in North Central Florida this lake is a magnet for wildlife. This is a lake for fishing and wildlife spotting. 

The south end of the lake is the Crescent Lake Conservation Area and it’s the best area to see the abundant wildlife on offer. 

Canoeing is allowed on the lake but motorboats are not so keep that in mind. There is also plenty to do on the shoreline here from hiking to biking to horseback riding. 

This long narrow lake is surrounded by palms and cypress swamp and really quite beautiful and wild.  

Lake Parker

One of the most popular lakes in Lakeland this lake is recreational heaven. It’s the largest lake and is to the northeast of the city. 

The lake is surrounded by parks and greenery and has three boat ramps. Fishing and boating are the most popular activities here. 

Lake Palmer is also the starting point of the Lake-To-Lake Trail if you fancy some hiking. Or just spend the day at the lake and the evening eating in one of the fine restaurants in the area.

Lake Tohopekaliga

The locals know this lake as Lake Toho and it is part of the Kissimmee Chain of Lakes. It’s the largest lake in Osceola County and is a big tourist draw. 

This is one of the clearest lakes in Florida and most come here to enjoy swimming boating and fishing. The wildlife here is also pretty abundant with alligators and turtles easy to spy on while ospreys and eagles fly above. 

There are many playgrounds and picnic tables here so pack a picnic and make a day of it. If you want to explore more there is also a hiking trail so you can see the natural scenery up close

Lake Istokpoga

The sixth-largest lake in Florida with nearly a 28,000-acre expanse there is lots to explore here. At four feet deep airboats are a great way to explore this lake and also super fun. 

It’s a pretty lake often mirroring its surroundings when calm and the grass and Lilly pads really add to the beauty. 

It’s a great lake for an overnight stay with five boat ramps, two parks, and several camping grounds surrounding the lake.

Lake Eustis

In central Florida’s lake county this is one of the spring-fed lakes. Part of the Harris Chain of Lakes this 7000-acre waterhole is a delight. 

It connects to Lake Harris via the Dead River and also St. Johns River. It’s also home to the Lake Eustis pupfish which are a protected species. 

It’s a great lake for boating, swimming, sailing, canoeing, kayaking, and windsurfing. The nearby towns of Eustis and Tavares are good for rentals. 

If you visit here the best thing to do is take a sunset walk around the quarter-mile-long trail that follows the shore it really is spectacular.

Lake Tarpon

Lake Tarpon is located about 10 miles west of Tampa . As the name suggests it is near Tarpon Springs and is the largest lake in Pinellas County. 

The lake is just over 2,500 acres and is this lake is popular among anglers who enjoy fishing for largemouth bass, black crappie, and bluegill.

While there is some boating on the lake it is not a lake for swimming in or general watersports.  

Lake Griffin

Lake Griffin is full of extensive marshes and consequently some great wildlife. This lake feeds the Ocklawaha River and is 9,500 acres. 

The best way to explore is by boat, kayak, or canoe this is also the best way to see the alligators, turtles, and bird species that inhabit this area. 

Lake Griffin State Park lies on the shores and is a great place to explore the incredible natural landscape in the area. There are some giant oak trees in the park one believed to be over 400 years old. 

You can camp here and it’s a great getaway in a somewhat serene location. And if you can book a tour with a local ranger it’s the best way to see the wildlife in the area.

An Insider’s Guide to Fishing in Lake County

Tim Frederick has spent his entire life discovering the best spots to fish along more than 1,000 lakes in Lake County. 

Frederick’s father moved his family to Tavares from Kentucky when he was four; by the time he was 13, he had a boat of his own and spent dawn to dusk casting a line and exploring the county’s lakes and canals for fish. He has been Lake County’s sponsored professional angler since 2016, competing and serving as a regional ambassador at tournaments and fishing trade shows across the country. 

“My favorite spot is the spot they’re biting in. I have a new favorite spot every day,” Frederick said. “There’s just so many different ways to fish here. Every time you turn around there’s a lake.”

Lake Eustis

Lake Eustis is one of the smaller lakes on the Harris Chain – and may be one of the best to reel in the big one. This lake features several “shell beds,” which are rocky surfaces up to a mile in length along its eastern shore where scores of bass, crappie and bluegill congregate. Make sure to also check out more than one dozen man made canals that line its perimeter where these fish flourish.

Bass thrive in Lake Dora year-round because of plentiful vegetation; in the winter months, anglers explore the lake’s shallow ends for the latest catch, and shift to its deeper, cooler waters in the summer months. Dock and dine after a day on the water at restaurants on either side of the lake like Pisces Rising in Mount Dora and Puddle Jumpers in Tavares.

Anglers looking for an-off-the-beaten path experience will love Lake Yale, which is just north of Lake Eustis but offers a quieter, less crowded alternative to some of its counterparts along the popular Harris Chain. Set in at the ramp at Marsh Park in Eustis to navigate Lake Yale’s clean waters that feature an average depth of eight feet and plenty of hydrilla and other vegetation for fish to enjoy. 

John’s Lake, Clermont 

In between Clermont and Orlando sits another hidden gem: John’s Lake. Bass flourish in schools here; they surround bait like a wolf pack and enter a feeding frenzy, making them easy to spot and to catch. The telltale sign of a bass school is the appearance of seagulls and other birds congregating and diving into a particular location on the lake. “When you see birds diving on bait, you need to get over there,” Frederick said. 

Clermont Chain of Lakes

Explore the lakes that Frederick described as a taste of “Old Florida,” where stately homes have lined the shoreline for generations. After setting in at the Clermont boat ramp in Lake Minneola, spend the afternoon navigating more than a half dozen lakes along the chain that are filled with clean water and vegetation. Stop at waterside restaurants and people-watch water skiers as you seek your next big catch. 

St. John’s River, Astor

For those looking for a multi-day adventure on a houseboat, the St. John’s River can’t be beat. This 231-mile-long river that flows from south to north is world-renowned for bass fishing. Set in along Florida Highway 44 in Astor for an only-in-Florida adventure along the river.

Most people think of beachy oceanfront destinations when they think of Florida. Frequently overlooked are the inland lakes beloved by fishing and boating enthusiasts in the Fishing Capital of the World, as well as by folks just looking for a freshwater escape and a taste of “ Old Florida .” 

In fact, Florida is home to more than 7,500 freshwater lakes and other bodies of water, and they are open year round for recreation activities. Here are a few of our favorite lake destinations in the Sunshine State waiting for you to take the bait.

Lake Okeechobee

Lake Okeechobee, which means “Big Water” in the Seminole language, is the largest freshwater lake in Florida and is legendary for largemouth bass fishing. Visitors can explore the Big Cypress Seminole Reservation to learn the history and modern-day life of the Seminole community at the Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki Museum , sleep in thatched-roof traditional dwellings called chickees, or take an airboat ride on the Big O (Lake Okeechobee).

Lake Tohopekaliga

Bordered on its north shore by historic downtown Kissimmee in Osceola County, Lake Tohopekaliga (or Lake Toho) is a 23,000-acre lake renowned for its bass fishing by anglers. But there’s more to enjoy beyond fishing: visitors can enjoy a splash pad and playground, as well as walking trails and picnic areas at Kissimmee Lakefront Park . You might also spy local wildlife like otters, turtles, and alligators in and around Lake Toho.

Lake George

As the second largest lake in Florida, Lake George is replete with fish, with a catch rate of .56 fish per hour, according to Visit Florida statistics. The 46,000-acre lake is situated in the Ocala National Forest, where hiking trails wind through longleaf pine trees—some ending at the lake’s shores. Paddle along the lake and stay overnight at a local campground for a relaxing retreat.

Lake Seminole

At the borders of the Florida, Georgia, and Alabama state lines, you’ll find Lake Seminole, a manmade lake fed by the Flint, Chattahoochee, and Apalachicola rivers. Lake Seminole Park offers a two-mile hiking and biking trail, as well as picnic shelters and a public boat ramp. Historic tidbit: The remains of the U.S. Infantry’s Fort Scott, built in 1816, lie at the bottom of Lake Seminole.

Lake Griffin

Part of the Harris Chain of Lakes, Lake Griffin is situated north of the city of Leesburg, Florida, in Fruitland Park and is a prized spot for summer panfishing. Visitors can rent canoes or kayaks and paddle through the marshes. Guided tours and pontoon boat tours are also popular activities. Lake Griffin State Park offers two miles of hiking trails and is rich with wildlife observation opportunities. You might see bobcats and coyotes, and there are alligators that live in the lake (swimming is prohibited for this reason).

Alligator Lake

Lake City, Florida's Springlands

Osceola County’s Alligator Chain of Lakes is situated at the headwaters of the Everglades and is a series of 12 small lakes, five of which are connected by canals that you can boat through and offer excellent fishing and birdwatching, especially on Alligator Lake, which is the largest. Despite its name, Alligator Lake doesn’t particularly stand out among Florida lakes for its alligator population (they live in greater numbers in other lakes). St. Cloud, Florida, is about a 15-minute drive away.

You don’t have to leave Orlando to appreciate the beauty of Lake Eola . The lake was formed with the aid of a natural sinkhole—an aquifer some 200 feet below the surface helps keep the lake filled. There’s a paved 0.9-mile walking trail circling the lake, as well as a Japanese Rock Garden and a Chinese Ting, and the area is usually bustling with events, including live music or plays at the Walt Disney Amphitheater.

Gulf County Florida Tourism

Described as “creepy and mysterious,” the Dead Lakes are so named due to the forest of dead cypress tree stumps that dot the lake. Located near the town of Wewahitchka, Florida, the trees here died when water from the Apalachicola and Chipola rivers flooded a cypress swamp, later followed by salt water. But tupelo gum trees still thrive here and their blossoms are the source of the famous tupelo honey. In fact, beekeepers still travel by “bee barge” on the Apalachicola River Basin to collect this specialty honey from this area of Florida. Kayak through the Dead Lakes and reward your hard work with a honey sampling at a local apiary.

Winter Haven Chain Of Lakes

We couldn’t pick just one lake in the collection of lakes that spans the cities of Winter Haven, Lake Alfred, and Lake Hamilton. This Central Florida Chain of Lakes is connected by canals with a northern and southern chain, comprising nearly 30 lakes altogether. With more than 550 lakes in Polk County alone, it’s easy to understand how Winter Haven is considered the Water Skiing Capital of the World. Visitors can boat through the canals and stop at lakefront restaurants and bars along the way, which makes for an ideal day out on the water.

Lake Apopka

The fourth largest lake in Florida is Lake Apopka , located 15 miles from Orlando in Orange County. Lake Apopka is the headwater lake of the Harris Chain of Lakes, or Ocklawaha Chain of Lakes, as it’s sometimes called. Thickly bordered with cypress swamps, it’s a place teeming with fish and wildlife, giving visitors an up-close glimpse of rugged, natural Florida. Take a slow 11-mile wildlife drive through this preserve or take a boat or kayak on the lake. Hikers can challenge themselves to a 17.2-mile hike each way along the Lake Apopka Loop Trail, including past a historic pumphouse. Trailheads are clearly marked and have wildlife information kiosks.

Lake Tarpon

Visit St. Pete/Clearwater

This freshwater lake, 10 miles west of Tampa, spans the cities of Palm Harbor and Tarpon Springs, Florida. Lake Tarpon is popular with anglers for trophy-sized striped bass and largemouth bass fishing. Though swimming is discouraged as with most Florida lakes due to alligators, people enjoy sailing, kayaking, and waterskiing here. Fun fact: according to local lore, an unidentified lake monster nicknamed “Tarpie” roams these waters, though these reports remain unconfirmed.

Crescent Lake

This crescent-shaped lake spans nearly 16,000 acres across Putnam and Flagler counties. Fishing for largemouth bass, crappie, bluegill, and shellcracker is most common. Crescent Lake connects to the St. Johns River through Dunn’s Creek. American painter Winslow Homer painted several landscapes on this river. Inspiration through nature continues. Visitors love watching the golden sunrises here, occasionally sighting bald eagles and ospreys. 

Blue Cypress Lake

The largest lake in Indian River County, Blue Cypress Lake , is still a bit of a hidden gem for birdwatchers and nature lovers. Paddle your way through thick bald cypress trees adorned with moss as you marvel at the ospreys, alligators, snakes, and other wildlife who’ve made this lake and its undeveloped shoreline home. You can arrange a guided airboat ride, eco boat tours, or photography tours at Blue Cypress Lake to create a special memory.

Lake Tulane

One of a few Florida lakes formed from natural sinkholes, Lake Tulane in Highlands County has a sand bottom and clear waters. People enjoy swimming here from a public beach on the southern side of the lake. It also draws people for fishing. Lake Tulane Park has a small playground and covered picnic facilities.

Camping, hike and bike trails, fishing, are some activities visitors enjoy at Lake Manatee State Park . Despite the name, you won’t find manatees in the lake, as the construction of the dam in the 1960s blocked them from entering.

Lake Santa Fe

Formerly known as Dunn's Lake, this sparkling spot covers more than 15,900 acres in North Central Florida. A tributary of St. Johns River, Crescent Lake is located in Flagler and Putnam counties. The Blanche is a hotel with a history in Lake City that dates back over 100 years. It was built in 1902 and made history as the first building in the state to have an elevator. 

The hotel has hosted many iconic people throughout the years, such as Johnny Cash and Al Capone. The building was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1990.

The venue also has drinks and snacks available for purchase that you can enjoy while playing.

Marion Street Bistro is a beloved restaurant located in the heart of historic downtown Lake City.

I've Lived in Florida for 27 Years — and These Are the Best State Parks to Visit

A local's guide to the best and most beautiful state parks in Florida.

Ever since I first came to Florida from the northeast in the late 1990s, I’ve been doing my best to get to know as many of the gorgeous state parks here as possible. And while Florida's 11 national parks — including Everglades National Park , Canaveral National Seashore, and Dry Tortugas National Park — tend to be the heavier tourism hitters, locals like me know its 175 state parks cover similarly gorgeous ground, with everything from freshwater springs and waterfalls to rare dune lakes and cave systems to explore. 

I’ve spent moonlit winter nights under majestic oaks and cypress trees along the Santa Fe River at O’Leno State Park, thrown on a scuba tank to go diving with red-bellied turtles and giant gar fish in the crystal-clear waters of Rainbow Springs State Park, and camped on the sand within a couple yards of the water at Bahia Honda State Park in the Florida Keys.

Rainbow Springs State Park, Dunnellon

Florida is brimming with freshwater springs, with more than 1,000 of the jewel-toned beauties scattered around the state. And while I hesitate to pick a favorite, Rainbow Springs State Park in north central Florida rises to the top. I love packing a picnic and sitting on the sloping shores surrounding the spring head before taking the cold plunge and walking the trails with family and friends. You can camp along the Rainbow River, accessed via a separate entrance nearby. This is also the best launching point for drift scuba diving outings or snorkeling in Rainbow River away from the crowds. For a luxury stay within a 30-minute drive of the park, consider The Equestrian Hotel in Ocala , an $800-million property devoted to all things equine and set in Florida’s stunning horse country.

Bahia Honda State Park, Florida Keys

It’s not easy to score a waterfront campsite at this popular state park on Big Pine Key, but even if you just swing through for the day, you’re in for a treat. Bahia Honda State Park is idyllic for snorkeling in clear, shallow waters atop grassy flats where you might spot juvenile reef fish and passing rays. It has some of the best natural beaches in the Florida Keys , too. You can rent kayaks and snorkeling gear on site, as well as book snorkeling trips to the bountiful reefs just offshore within Looe Key National Marine Sanctuary. My favorite thing to do here at sunset is follow the park’s lone nature trail from the southwest end of the island to the top of the old Bahia Honda Bridge. It’s the perfect place to scout fish, turtles, and dolphins frolicking in the clear waters while watching the sky turn all shades of pretty pastels.

Highlands Hammock State Park, Sebring

I recently visited this wild state park in Sebring, Florida, with my family, and was amazed by how it felt like a mini Everglades, but was only two hours inland from my home in Tampa. I was also surprised to learn that Highlands Hammock State Park is home to more rare and endemic species than any park in the entire state, including Florida black bears, American alligators, and Florida panthers. One of Florida’s oldest state parks, it dates to 1931, when it was established by the Civilian Conservation Corps. There’s a great on-site museum that delves into that history and shows the conditions in which workers lived, worked, and played back then. We loved riding the tram into the most alligator-ridden reaches of the park and strolling through an old-growth cypress swamp atop an elevated boardwalk trail. Whatever you do, don’t miss a birding hike with ranger Blake, if it’s on offer the day you visit. Blake grew up in this area and has owls calling back to him, plus you'll spot things you’d never see on your own.

Edward Ball Wakulla Springs State Park, Wakulla Springs

I first visited this glorious state park, about 15 miles south of Tallahassee in Florida’s Panhandle, as a college kid in town to party at Florida State University during a football weekend. Edward Ball Wakulla Springs State Park was the first place I ever saw manatees, and the ancient cypress swamp always proves to be a fruitful place to scout alligators. There are a ton of cool ways to experience this park, whether you opt for a guided jungle cruise on a glass-bottom riverboat, go swimming in the gin-clear waters at the spring head, or spend the night at the historic Lodge at Wakulla Springs . The latter — home to the world’s longest-known marble bar, stretching some 70 feet — dates to the 1930s.

Sebastian Inlet State Park, Melbourne Beach

Straddling Melbourne Beach and Vero Beach, Sebastian Inlet State Park is a haven for anyone who likes to fish, surf, or simply stroll the sand for miles. Many moons ago, when I dated a Florida surfer boy, we’d come here to camp at nearby Long Point Park , all the better to be up for dawn patrol when the waves were cranking just offshore from Sebastian (First Peak is considered the best surf break here, but there are gentler options for beginners, too). These days, I visit with my kids to walk the length of the pier to see what anglers are reeling in and pop into the fascinating McLarty Treasure Museum to ogle finds that have washed ashore from the 1715 Spanish treasure fleet of galleons that met its demise here during a hurricane (much of the loot is still buried in the sand somewhere offshore).

Grayton Beach State Park, Santa Rosa Beach

Along with Madagascar, New Zealand, and Oregon, a small stretch of the Florida Panhandle in Walton County is one of the only places in the world where you can find coastal dune lakes — rare geographical features of shallow water nestled into sand dune ecosystems. You can see some of the most beautiful examples of these at Grayton Beach State Park , including Western Lake, where it’s possible to rent a kayak or standup paddleboard to glide atop waters as smooth as glass. Stay in one of the park’s cozy cabins, secreted among the tall pines, or nab one of the 59 campsites that put some of Florida’s most pristine white-sand beaches at your doorstep. Other park highlights include a 4.5-mile hiking and biking trail that meanders through a forest home to Florida black bears, gray foxes, and white-tailed deer.

Myakka River State Park, Sarasota

East of Sarasota, along Florida’s Gulf Coast, Myakka River State Park is a real surprise that’s home to wetlands, prairies blanketed with wildflowers come autumn, and forests dense with palms and live oaks. Every time I visit, I’m reminded of how scenic this state is. Birders like me flock to the Birdwalk, a boardwalk that winds through hammock environments to a floodplain marsh where you might hear ospreys calling overhead and spot roseate spoonbills and herons foraging the shallows for something to eat. My kids love adventuring down the Myakka Canopy Walkway, which is raised 25 feet above the ground. You can visit the park on tram and boat tours, too, making it perfect for a multigenerational day trip from nearby cities like Sarasota and Tampa .

Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park, Key Biscayne

Within minutes of downtown Miami, Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park promises sandy beaches with no development, as well as bayside hideaways for enjoying sunset drinks, like family-owned and operated bar The Cleat (my favorite spot to sip a watermelon sangria fronting No Name Harbor). When you’re not kicking back on the beach, you can rent a bike to pedal a 1.5-mile paved pathway in the park, hike nature trails through mangrove wetlands, or grill at a picnic pavilion overlooking Biscayne Bay. This park is also known for the historic 1825 Cape Florida Lighthouse, which you can tour several days a week during guided visits.

Ravine Gardens State Park, Palatka

I was floored by this fascinating state park in the north Florida town of Palatka, near Jacksonville, when I happened upon it during a road trip earlier this year. The best time to visit Ravine Gardens State Park is from January through March, when more than 18 types of azaleas come into peak bloom — they’re at the heart of gardens formed within the natural ravines here back in 1933 (there’s even an annual Azalea Festival held the first week of March). The park’s most unique geological formations are two “steephead ravines,” which are naturally cut 120 feet into the earth and formed by erosion. You can explore the park along a paved road (driving, biking, or walking), or opt to detour along trails that follow suspension bridges and stone staircases down to a spring-fed creek.

Drive about one hour north of Panama City to reach the only Florida state park where you can head underground to explore caves and caverns without a scuba diving tank. Guided tours take visitors into large underground spaces within the limestone cave system to ogle stalactites and stalagmites illuminated for a dazzling effect. You’ll descend 35 steps to tour a dozen different rooms, within which your guide might point out interesting subterranean denizens, like cave crickets, bats, and salamanders. When you emerge from the cave, it’s into a beautiful hardwood forest, providing an incredible contrast between the up-top and down-below Florida worlds.

With water temperatures at 72 degrees year-round, this peaceful oasis is not only great for swimming but also offers great snorkeling and paddling conditions. A rare and secret find, your family will love spending time here, especially when the manatees make an appearance! 

2. Lake George 

Lake George is one of the most famous lakes in Florida. Located in the northern portion of the state, the lake spans 46,000 acres, qualifying it as one of the largest lakes in Florida. The brackish water (the result of a mixture of fresh water and seawater) has an average depth of 10 feet. 

Swimming is a popular pastime here, along with other recreational activities like fishing, boating, and camping. Thousands of alligators call this lake home, so it’s very important to only swim in the spring-fed channels.

You can tell which areas are safe to swim by the color of the water. The crystal-clear waters and those specifically sanctioned for swimming are safe to use. 

Always keep a watch out for alligators, regardless of where you are swimming here. 

3. Lake Stella 

Lake Stella is one of the best secret swimming holes in Florida. Created by a sinkhole in Auburndale, it’s one of the most fun natural pools in Florida to visit.

The beach here is a great place for families to swim and picnic on a hot day, so be sure to pack your beach toys and chairs !

Given the lake’s exceptional water depth, it’s also a popular spot for fishing. Anglers can test their luck by catching Florida fish like largemouth bass. The lake is also a lovely place to kayak and explore.

4. Rainbow Springs 

Rainbow Springs, located in Rainbow Springs State Park  in Dunnellon, is one of the prettiest bodies of water in Florida. Its name says it all, as the springs magically radiate a rainbow hue. We can’t do it justice in words; it’s really a sight to behold!   

The water here is transparently clear and so gentle but deeper than some of the other entries on our list, ranging from 10 to 18 feet deep. At 72 degrees year-round, It’s perfect for a day of swimming, snorkeling, or just floating around. 

While we were staying in Ocala, we visited Rainbow Springs and had a great time. The water was so warm to swim in, even during the winter months.

So be sure to load up your beach tote with snorkel gear and bring a boogie board to kick around on, too! We also recommend packing a picnic for this visit. There are plenty of beautiful places to set up a picnic area while you enjoy a day under the Florida sun.

After you’re done playing in the water, be sure to spend some time exploring the gorgeous gardens and nature trails throughout the park. Trust us, nature lovers won’t want to miss it!

5. Wakulla Springs 

Wakulla Springs at Edward Ball Wakulla Springs State Park is one of the best swimming holes in Florida thanks to its stunning freshwater lake appearance. The crystal clear spring holds the title of the deepest freshwater springs in the world.

With a constant water temperature right around 70 degrees, this is one of the best Florida lakes to cool off in during warmer months. 

The spring is surrounded by cypress trees and a swamp, and the park is full of stunning Florida flowers and plants. If you have extra time, be sure to take one of the boat tours offered here; you will learn so much about the history of the area as well as the plants and wildlife. 

If you visit Wakulla Springs as a family, your kids will likely be excited to know that a slew of alligators, manatees, and several species of birds call this state park home. You never know what kind of wildlife you might spot during your visit. 

6. Ichetucknee Springs State Park 

Ichetucknee Springs State Park is known mainly for its river tubing, but also offers a couple of swimming areas. We recommend families enjoy splashing around at the head of Ichetucknee Spring, where the current isn’t as strong and swimmers of a variety of skill levels can enjoy the water. 

More experienced swimmers can head over to Blue Hole Spring, where the water is deeper and there is a more swift current. 

If your schedule allows for it, we do recommend floating the Ichetucknee River in addition to your swimming adventure. It’s a fun and relaxing way to spend a portion of your day, enjoying the beautiful Florida landscape as well as some exciting wildlife like beavers, turtles, and even ducks. 

7. Blue Hole Spring

Also located at Ichetucknee State Park, Blue Hole Spring is a wonder to explore. Sometimes referred to as Jug Spring, this spot is one of the only first-magnitude springs in this part of the state.

While swimming here, you can actually feel the power and pushback behind the 67 million gallons of water that flows through this spring each day. One of the best springs to snorkel in, the world below the surface is filled with turtles and a variety of fish.

8. Blue Spring State Park

Blue Spring State Park is most famously known for its massive manatee population during the coolest times of the year, but the spring run here makes it one of the best Florida natural lakes to swim in, too! 

As is the case with so many of the best lakes in Florida, the water at Blue Spring State Park is stunningly clear and is an amazing place for snorkeling as well as swimming. 

Keep in mind that there are limitations on when and where you can swim in Blue Spring State Park when the manatees are present. We visited Blue Spring State Park in January one time and the river run was closed to swimming as well as floating because there were manatees in the river.

If the main river run is closed, there are some spots further down the river where kayaking is open.

9. Fanning Springs State Park 

Fanning Springs State Park and be found next to the Suwannee River. The spring here has a gorgeous turquoise appearance, making it one of the prettiest Florida bodies of water. 

Fanning Springs is a top-notch spot to swim with your family in Florida. The amazing water is also perfect for snorkeling, paddling, or kayaking.

After taking a refreshing dip, we recommend taking your family on an adventure on the nature trails throughout the park. It’s an excellent way to spend some time outside enjoying nature and some beautiful wildlife.  

10. Wekiwa Springs State Park

We didn’t include any lakes in Orlando on our list, but Wekiwa Springs State Park is only a short drive out of town. Known for its stunning emerald waters, the spring waters here are comfortable and clear, making it a wonderful spot to spend a day snorkeling.

This is yet another exceptional park for nature walks as well. We highly recommend taking the family on a hike before or after playing in the water. There’s so much natural beauty to enjoy at Wekiwa Springs State Park.  

Wekiwa Springs State Park would be a wonderful addition to your itinerary if you’re looking for things to do in Orlando for 4th of July .

11. Buccaneer Bay 

Buccaneer Bay at Weeki Wachee Springs State Park is unlike any of the other places on our list. Trust us when we say you’ve never visited a natural spring quite like this. Buccaneer Bay is one of the only spring-fed water parks in the country. 

Kids and adults alike will have the time of their lives on the park’s water slides, Cannonball and Pirate’s Revenge, each of which drops riders right into the natural spring pool. The slides and the ambiance of pure fun make Weeki Wachee Springs a must-stop during your Florida vacation! 

Where Not to Swim in Florida 

While Florida lakes are some of the best places to cool off and enjoy some water fun, it’s important to research where you plan to swim ahead of time and be prepared for that area’s water conditions. 

Several factors, including Florida lake water quality issues like harmful algal bloom, swift currents, and wildlife, can throw a wrench into your swimming plans, so it’s always a good idea to stay aware of current conditions. 

Not all lakes in Florida are recommended for swimming. Lake Eloise, Seven Seas Lagoon, and Lake Cannon are the top lakes to avoid during your family vacation to the Sunshine State.

Tornadoes hit Louisiana and Texas as severe weather causes damage in South

A tornado with 115-mph winds ripped off roofs and tore down power lines in Lake Charles, Louisiana, on Wednesday, and another twister damaged homes in Texas as severe weather struck the South.

No deaths or injuries were reported in the EF-2 tornadoes that hit Lake Charles and Port Arthur, Texas, on Wednesday morning, the National Weather Service said.

In Lake Charles, a city of 84,000 in the southwestern part of the state, the tornado traveled for about a mile beginning at 6:38 a.m., the weather service said . The roof of the Moss Memorial Health Complex was damaged, and other roofs were destroyed.

In Port Arthur, another EF-2 tornado around 300 yards wide traveled more than 2 miles, damaging homes and ripping down trees, the weather servi c e said .

“It was pretty bad,” Michelle Viator, of Lake Charles, told NBC affiliate KPLC . “I mean, everything’s down.”

Viator’s home was damaged, and a family down her street who have two children were trapped by the damage to their home, Viator told the station in Lake Charles.

On Tuesday, heavy rain, hail and high winds hit Mississippi and other Southern states.

Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves announced Wednesday that there had been one weather-related death in his state, in Scott County, and an injury in Grenada County.

“Please pray for them and their families during this difficult time,” Reeves said on X .

He said preliminary information was that 72 homes were damaged or destroyed in Grenada, Hinds, Marshall, Scott, Warren and Yazoo counties.

More than 4 inches of rain fell in Hinds County, Mississippi, and more than 5 inches fell in Holmes, Rankin and Sharkey counties, the weather service in Jackson said.

In New Orleans, streets flooded Wednesday. A flash flood emergency had been declared for the metro area, and the weather service there warned residents "DO NOT DRIVE right now!" New Orleans police showed images of inundated roads and urged people to avoid flooded areas.

St. Tammany Parish, on the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain across from New Orleans, shared video of destruction, including downed trees and destroyed houses and buildings, amid heavy rain. 

The National Weather Service said it found damage consistent with an EF-1 tornado in Slidell near Old Spanish Trail, but it said more storm surveys would be needed to determine the path, length and wind speeds.

An EF-1 tornado also struck the Houston suburb of Katy early Wednesday with 90 mph maximum winds, officials said. While the damage survey is still ongoing, it’s consistent with an EF-1 tornado, Jeff Evans of the National Weather Service Office in Houston/Galveston told reporters.

There were more than 90 storm reports Tuesday, including reports of hail as large as 4.25 inches in diameter across Texas.

Jasper, Texas, marked 7.58 inches of rain, and 7.38 inches were clocked in Marshall, Texas, along with 7.22 inches at Big Sunflower River in Holly Bluff, Mississippi, and 6.24 inches in Monroe, Louisiana. In Kirbyville, Texas, Pin Oak Creek rose 10 feet in less than six hours.

A disaster declaration was issued for Jasper County, Texas, which includes Kirbyville, on Wednesday. The Jasper County Sheriff’s Office said the city “remains under water” Wednesday morning and rescue teams have extricated “several” people out of vehicles and homes. 

By Wednesday evening, high wind advisories covered much of the South. In Birmingham, Alabama, forecasters said there could be 45 mph wind gusts, and the advisory there lasted until 7 a.m. Thursday.

Tornado watches covered an area of the Florida Panhandle and southwestern Georgia at 6:45 p.m. ET.

Around 136,000 customers across Louisiana remained without power Wednesday evening, according to the tracking website poweroutage.us .

Severe risk continues Thursday for the Ohio Valley, the Southeast and northern Florida. Thursday’s risks are lower than Wednesday’s, but all hazards will be possible for Jacksonville, Tallahassee, Tampa and other cities in Florida for the southern risk area and for Cleveland and Columbus, Ohio, and Pittsburgh across the northern risk area.
