The USA Volleyball Beach Tour is a joint effort between USA Volleyball and the 40 USAV regions for junior volleyball players.

There are qualifying and nonqualifying events, with the qualifying events distributing bids to the USA Volleyball Beach National Championship.

All competitors and coaches at a USA Volleyball Beach Tour tournament must be USA Volleyball members.

Every summer, the USA Volleyball Beach Tour culminates with the USA Volleyball Beach National Championship. This tournament provides young beach athletes an opportunity to compete for a national championship. Four divisions currently compete at the national championship: 12U, 14U, 16U and 18U.

Schedule updated: Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour adds stops to 2022 season

Volleyball World on Monday announced the latest stops in its preliminary schedule for the 2022 Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour.

A month ago, at the World Tour Finals in Cagliari, Italy, the new Beach Pro Tour was unveiled, a three-tiered system — divided into the Elite 16, Challengers, and Futures — that is replacing the five-star tour that was put into place in the wake of the Rio Olympic Games. Twelve stops were announced then, and six more were added on Monday.

Many of the stops have been long-time hosts of international beach volleyball. Rio de Janeiro was the first stop on the FIVB, in 1987, and played host to the wildly popular 2016 Olympic Games. Mexico has typically hosted a fall event, and featured back-to-back-to-back four stars in 2021, in Cancun.

Ostrava is one of the most unique stops on Tour and is a favorite amongst the players. Jurmala recently hosted the CEV European Championships, and is a beloved beach by Latvian Olympian and USC standout Tina Graudina .

Rome, Hamburg, and Gstaad have traditionally put on the grandest shows on the World Tour, with enormous fanbases, iconic sites, and major prize money.

Egypt, meanwhile, has never hosted a tournament, nor has the Maldives, unless you include the small invitational they put on two years ago, documented by the McKibbin brothers. 

An obvious question mark for players and fans like is the total dearth of Futures events, which are the equivalent of one-stars in the old system. The graphic above mentioned that more cities will be announced soon, many of which are likely to be Futures events, as they are the cheapest to run.

There are several gaps in the schedule that are likely to be filled: between Cape Town and Ostrava, Rome and Gstaad, Gstaad and Hamburg, Hamburg and France, China and Australia.

No announcement has been made by the AVP or NORCECA in regards to their schedules for the 2022 beach volleyball seasons.

Dutch beach volleyball player who served time for rape has qualified for Paris Olympics

A Dutch beach volleyball player convicted and imprisoned eight years ago for raping an underage girl in Britain has qualified for the Paris Olympics.

Steven van de Velde and partner Matthew Immers were one of two men's teams from the Netherlands that qualified for the beach volleyball competition at the Paris Games, which open on July 26 in the French capital. Most beach pairs qualify for the 24-team Olympic field by earning points on the international tour; Van de Velde and Immers were 11th on the points list.

“I understand that in the run-up to the biggest sporting event in the world, this can attract the attention of international media,” Van de Velde said in a statement posted on the website of the Netherlands Volleyball Federation. “I cannot reverse it, so I will have to bear the consequences. It has been the biggest mistake of my life.”

Van de Velde was sentenced to four years in prison in Britain after being convicted in 2016 of having sex with an underage girl he reportedly got to know online. He was transferred to the Netherlands under a treaty between the countries, and resentenced according to Dutch law.

“After his release, Van de Velde sought and received professional counseling. He has demonstrated to those around him — privately and professionally — self-insight and reflection,” the federation said.

It added that both the federation and the Netherlands Olympic Committee “rely on the opinions of experts who consider the chance of recidivism nil.”

The Dutch Olympic committee said Van de Velde, now 29, met the conditions required to return after a conviction and resumed his career in 2017 “after an intensive professionally supervised process.”

“Van de Velde now meets all the qualification requirements for the Olympic Games and is therefore part of the team,” the committee said.

The international volleyball federation said it “recognizes that this is a highly sensitive matter” but said team selection is the responsibility of the national Olympic committee “while respecting the eligibility criteria.”

U.S. Olympic beach volleyball star describes avoiding negative comments online to focus on mental health

Kelly Cheng reached a career milestone when she competed in her first Olympics at the Tokyo Games. But instead of enjoying competition against the world’s best, the U.S. beach volleyball star felt dread.

“Every match, every point, every contact on the ball felt like life or death,” she said. “I was stressed, mentally, physically.”

Cheng said criticism from her detractors took a toll on her mental health on NBC's ’ “My New Favorite Olympian” podcast.

“A lot of people don’t like how I play volleyball,” she said. “Me reading (online hate) is letting it in. So that really feeds into the negative self-talk because then that negative voice in my head starts repeating those things that I’ve read.”

Cheng’s performance can also be hurt when she doesn’t play to her own expectations as an Olympic athlete.

“It’s this super-heavy pressure that I put on myself,” she said. “It gets hard to breathe. My whole body gets tight. Sometimes when I’m in that negative mindset, it almost feels like a train coming at me. And if it gets too fast, I can’t stop the train.”

Cheng — who won a gold medal with Sara Hughes at the world championships last year — says she’s taking matters into her own hands by blocking anything that threatens her mental health. She has learned to avoid negative comments online and has taken steps to work with a sports psychologist to reframe her negative self-doubt.

“What I’ve worked really hard on is this idea of neutral self-talk,” she said. “So, not ‘I should be doing this or that.’ It’s very small, productive sentences to myself. Let’s say I shanked a ball. Instead of ... getting really critical of myself, like, ‘Gosh, you suck. You’re not going to win this game. You shouldn’t even be out here,’ I push all of those thoughts away and get back into neutral self-talk, and that’s been super helpful for me.”

Cheng is using her experiences to provide mentorship by helping the next generation of volleyball players prioritize their mental health. In 2022, she launched the Beach Mentorship Camp, where she rents a house every year and pairs eight teenage girls with eight professional beach volleyball players for three days of mentorship in California.

But the mentoring doesn’t end after the three days in camp. Cheng encourages mentors to maintain relationships throughout the year as a form of building support.

“If time permits, to keep investing in your mentee at least once a month, take them out to dinner, go bowling with them, just keep pouring into this [person being mentored], keep having those interactions together and just see how she can flourish,” she said. “Having that influence in her life. I just think it’s going to be this really special thing that these girls are going to be able to hold on to forever and now have this older sister always in their corner.”

The mentorship is already making an impact. Cheng has developed a “big sister” relationship with Southern Cal beach volleyball player Grace Hong. Their bond has continued to grow as their conversations have evolved from “surface level” topics about volleyball to deeper discussions of the importance of mental health.

“I could go to [Cheng] with anything,” Hong said. “I could go to her with something that has nothing to do with volleyball and she would give you the best advice on the planet. It’s like she has ultimate knowledge about everything.”

By providing mentorship, Cheng inspired Hong to give back herself. Hong, who was born with a right hand smaller than her left, recently launched her own foundation called Grip: The Grace Hong Foundation for Limb Difference Awareness. 

“Kelly played such a huge role in that, because she was my outlet and I went to her with everything,” she said. “I’ve cried to her about my hand countless times, and she is the one that told me that I’m here for a reason and I was able to do everything I did for a reason, and I just wanted to be able to do something in my life that would help anybody that’s like me or anybody that has something that they think holds them back.”

Knowing she has made a positive impact has helped Cheng improve her own mental health.

“I just feel so fulfilled being around [Hong] and pouring into her,” she said.

THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) — A Dutch beach volleyball player convicted and imprisoned eight years ago for raping an underage girl in Britain has qualified for the Paris Olympics.
