Unless the camp is entirely and exclusively linked, Arathusa does not accommodate guests under the age of twelve years old.

Children of 12 years and over are welcome at the lodge and will be charged the full adult rates for the accommodation.

The Sabi Sands is renowned for Big Cat sightings and leopard are frequently seen on the reserve.

Arathusa Safari Lodge offers accommodation in thatch-roofed suites, all completed with en-suite bathrooms, verandahs, mini-bars, air conditioning, mosquito nets, electronic safes, hairdryers and coffee making stations.

There are nine Water-Facing Suites that overlook a waterhole that teems with resident hippo and other animals that come down to drink. Each suite is spacious and fresh in design. They each feature an en-suite bathroom with private indoor and outdoor showers, as well as a private verandah that overlooks the waterhole.

Arathusa has four Bush-Facing Suites that are remotely located away from the lodge, offering complete privacy. Each of the spacious open-plan suites feature a lounge area, en-suite bathroom with both indoor and outdoor showers, as well as a private verandah and plunge pool.  

The lodge facilities include a bar area, dining room and outdoor deck, a safety deposit box, reading lounge, infinity swimming pool, curio shop, internet connectivity in the main areas of the lodge, a traditional open-air boma, and a spa and wellness center with a treatment room that overlooks the lodge’s waterhole and the beautiful African bushveld.

Arathusa offers entertainment in the way of guided safari drives - open vehicle excursions into the park, one conducted in the morning, the other at dusk. These outings are coordinated, and the guests kept up to date by highly trained teams of experienced game rangers and local Shangaan trackers. Guided bush walks are also conducted during the moderate hours of the day, during which guests have the opportunity to get within arm's reach of the animals they spot, as well as engaging with theiShangaanrs on the topics of local bush types, bird habitats, and the area's history.

Arathusa is particularly well known for its leopard population, with regular sightings and a familiarity with the animals making for easy viewing. Additionally, the area plays host to large buffalo herds, elephant groups, and numerous lion prides, as well as the rest of the big five (in abundance), and lowveld game, including zebra, impala, giraffe, and warthog. The area is also home to an impressive array of birdlife.

Arathusa has a total of 13 Luxury Suites on offer: nine overlook the in-house waterhole while the other four are set deeper into the bush, without a waterhole view but enjoying a more remote and private setting and they come with their own plunge pool.

All suites at Arathusa are elegant in design with an appealing decor of canvas, stone and thatch. The communications and service from Walter was excellent, and we were continuously fully informed. The information package and book received on arrival were excellent. We felt that we had been allocated carefully selected lodges at each camp and every detail met or exceeded our expectations. The safari tour was wonderful, and a particular feature was the variety offered at each location which combined perfectly

Our extended family (16 travellers, including 8 children under ten years of age!) went on a wonderful safari adventure curated and organised by Walter Kohrs of Safari Online. It could not have been any better than we experienced. From our time in Cape Town, to visiting Victoria Falls, all the way through Zimbabwe and finally wrapping up at the amazing Chobe Safari Lodge, all the locations chosen by Walter were amazing.

His attention to detail, willingness to fine-tune and excellent responsiveness (over a period of several months!) could not have been better. He took time to visit us personally upon our arrival in South Africa, with lovely gift-packs and shared a wealth of advice, recommendations and tips. We have booked at the Elephant Plains Lodge. We stayed there for a few nights and went on safaris. The lodge, the guide, the food and all the animals we have seen were fantastic. Really an outstanding experience. We can recommend Elephant Plains to everybody. Maybe you will not be as lucky as we were, becaucse we have seen the Big 5! But however you will not forget your stay at Elephant Plains.

The care by Walter was great from planning to leaving Johannesburg. The accommodations were perfectly chosen. If after a few days you thought it could not be better, you were told otherwise. It was an increase every day, with the 3 days safari in the Kruger, including overnight in tree house, the grand finale. I would book a trip anytime again at Safari Online.

Attention to detail & service provided was first class, from our very first email to the last day of our trip. The safari was so much more than expected, from the rustic to the exceptional, every camp was different in it’s own way and our highlights are hard to single out just one as each camp was great.

In June/July 2016 we undertook a trip to Southern Africa to fulfill a lifelong intention. We stayed at six camps, safari style, and had a great time. All of our expectations were met or even exceeded. For example, we never expected to see honey badgers or sitatunga, given the secretive nature of those species, but we did! All travel arrangements and connections worked smoothly, which is astonishing since we had several dozen transfers and meeting points; all of the connecting personnel were prompt, professional, and welcoming.

Activities at Arathusa Safari Lodge

Game drives, in an open safari vehicle, are conducted in the early morning and late afternoon every day in search of animals – both large and small. Experienced, knowledgeable and personable rangers are paired with local trackers, and together they ensure a first class safari experience. Trackers sit up at the front of the vehicle looking for fresh animal tracks, while rangers skillfully navigate into ravines and through thickets in pursuit of fantastic game sightings. Close encounters are guaranteed, and the animals are not threatened by our presence thanks to our sound conservation management policies. Expect one-of-a-kind photographic opportunities of The Big Five, and much more – including over 300 bird species. A treat for keen birders! Guided walks with an armed ranger may also be arranged. Walks are usually arranged in the early hours during the summer months, when temperatures are more moderate. Being on foot affords a unique and altogether different view of the bush.

Meals were of a very high standard,well presented offering 3 excellent meals per day served in the open sided Dining Building with each menu introduced enthusiastically by the Head Chef. Our Ranger Phil and Tracker Rofis were great and the bush trek with Phil was very enjoyable, informative and not to be missed. Arathusa was fantastic. We looked into numerous lodges and this one was relatively well-priced and delivered all that we wanted and more. The spacious, thatched chalets all feature large en suite bathrooms, indoor and outdoor showers, air conditioning, minibars, safes, tea/coffee making facilities and mosquito nets. Rooms have comfy chairs, a high thatched roof and a bath in the corner of the room. Bush-facing rooms also have their own private plunge pool.

Arathusa is located in the northern part of Sabi Sands Game Reserve, adjacent to Kruger National Park, and is therefore surrounded by some of the most varied and concentrated numbers of wildlife in South Africa.

Food and drink

Fresh local produce is the basis for meals at Arathusa. Continental breakfast is served after the morning game drive, consisting of a continental breakfast, with hot breakfast requests made to order. Lunch is a light table d’hôte option served prior to your afternoon game drive, while a high tea of cake and fruits is also served. Sundowner drinks are an integral part of any afternoon safari and while you’re out in the bush you can be served your favorite tipple with a series of snacks in a scenic spot. Dinner is a four course creative affair. Generally a social event, it may be held in a variety of places around the lodge, perhaps on the deck over the waterhole or in the boma.

Families are welcome at the lodge, but children under 12 are not permitted.

Facilities and activities

Game drives depart in the early evening and late afternoon in open vehicles with experienced and knowledgeable rangers. Photo opportunities and some close encounters are to be expected! The lodge also has a spa, which offers a wide range of treatments using locally sourced products.

The enchanting Arathusa Safari Lodge lies within the world renowned Sabi Sand Private Reserve, adjacent to the unfenced Kruger National Park. Guests are treated to an exceptional wildlife experience, including encounters with the prized Big 5.

Arathusa Safari Lodge is unique and highly sought-after by visitors because of its prime location within the Sabi Sand Reserve, adjacent to the unfenced Kruger National Park. Together these two areas comprise one of South Africa’s most incredible and pristinely preserved wilderness sanctuaries.

There are thirteen Suites, nine of which face the waterhole in front of the lodge, and four of which are remotely located within the bush a short distance from the lodge. Each Suite is uniquely designed, with fresh interiors and a focus on light and space. Each has a bathroom en-suite, with shower, as well as a private outdoor shower and verandah. Amenities include a mini bar (stocked with a selection of beverages on request), an electronic safe, hairdryer, air conditioning, direct-dial telephone, mosquito net and tea/ coffee making facilities. Each of the four remote Suites also has its own plunge pool, and affords guests the ultimate privacy (please bear in mind that these Suites are a bit of a walk from the main Lodge area).

In keeping with the traditional natural safari experience, there are no televisions in the Suites at Arathusa. Guests are, however, able to connect to Wi-Fi in the public areas and in reception with compliments.

Arathusa’s is an intimate environment… its open-plan design and natural décor mean that it blends seamlessly with the African bush surroundings. The main living area is intended for comfort. The infinity swimming pool overlooks the waterhole, and is the perfect spot for wildlife viewing while cooling off on a sweltering African summer’s afternoon.

Arathusa offers an exceptional safari experience – expect a high concentration of an assortment of game, including the Big Five, and frequent leopard sightings. The lodge is situated in front of a thriving open plain ensuring interesting game and bird viewing from the comfort of the camp.

Arathusa’s Safari Spa offers guests a luxurious spa experience with a range of treatments and natural spa products. Couples treatments are available too.

THE MAIN HOTEL ARTHURS SPA LIES IN A BEAUTIFUL PLACE AND HAS GREAT FACILITIES BUT ARTHURS VILLAGE IS A POOR VERSION OF THE SAME WITH DIRTY CARPETS, DIRTY SHOWERS, HORRIBLE BEDS AND OLD FASHIONED FURTNITURES IN THE ROOM. ITS A 10MIN WALK TROUGH SNOW WITH MINUS 24 DEGREES AND 4 KIDS TO THE MAIN HOTEL WHERE ALL THE FUN STUFF LIKE THE SKATING RING, POOL AND BOWLING WAS AND THE EVENING ENTERTAINMENT-WITH 2 SUITCASES TO BRING ALL THE KIDS' GEAR LIKE SWIMMING GEAR, SKATES ETC AND THEN AT NIGHT AT 22 PM BACK FOR 15 MIN TROUGH A -24 DEGREES COLD WITH NO TRANSPORT BETWEEN THE HOTELS. REALLY UNCOMFY FOOD IS GOOD AND PERSONNEL IS FRIENDLY

In general very good experience. Spa & wellness facilities are excellent. All needed things for kids 0, 3 and 9 years old were provided by request. The only thing - access to building 6 is hard with the baby stroller cradle.

An overpriced stay. Electricity issues (we had no power in the midnight, then we had issues with A/C and Wi-Fi because of that. They couldn’t fix it. Poor communication by e-mail. I asked to switch on A/Cs in both rooms beforehand but no one paid attention to my request. The pre-promised late check out turned out to be impossible too… But fine, we wanted to leave asap because of not working A/C in the living room. Green area. Poor facilities. Poor animation. Green water pool in SPA (no visibility, river smell). Regarding the cleaning. We found 2 socks in the living room right under the heater. Come on! Nice food. Open air cinema. Overall, it doesn’t look as it costs. Is it Accor?

I would like more master classes for children (take for example how it is organized in the AREAL hotel near Balashikha). Animation for preschool children frankly sags. The food is simply amazing, the best food in the world! I love you for it. No five stars compare. And it would be possible to organize a shuttle between the spa and the village. All the same, hotel workers go back and forth on business matters. It would be possible to organize the delivery this way.

• We regret that Arathusa Safari Lodge does not offer any Kosher meals. No specialist Halaal food is served, but we have chicken/fish/vegetarian options available.

No, you can’t use Google Maps or a GPS when driving to the lodge as this will take you to the wrong entry gate. You can  only  enter at  Gowrie Gate  in the north.

Payment for all additional extras is to be settled on departure. This include: curio shop purchases, spa treatments & products and laundry.

We do not offer Family Rooms/Interleading Rooms or Triple Rooms. Our rooms are suitable for 2 guests only in either twin or double beds. Please advise should you require a twin bed setup.

Hoedspruit is the closest commercial airport to Arathusa. Arathusa also has its own airstrip that is serviced by Fedair.

Our game drives are ± 3 hours long, and take place early morning and late afternoon (returning to the lodge after sunset).

You do have to pay gate fees at both as they are 2 different conservation areas.

Yes we do, at an additional cost. Please note that this is a ‘bush laundry’ service, and we do not recommend that ‘delicates’ are sent through. 

Many local people and some travellers do not take malaria prophylaxis, but most health professionals recommend you do. Consult your doctor or a specialist travel clinic for the latest advice concerning malaria prophylaxis, as it changes regularly.

Whether you take oral prophylaxis or not, always use mosquito repellent (available in each of the suites at Arathusa, as well as on game drives) and wear long pants, closed shoes and light long-sleeved shirts at night. Be sure to sleep under a mosquito net in endemic areas (the  anopheles  mosquito, which carries malaria, operates almost exclusively after dark). It is advisable to avoid malaria areas if you are pregnant.

You can pay by credit card, bank transfer or by PayGate (a secure link where you enter your card details). A 50% deposit is payable when confirming your booking. The balance is due 30 days before arrival.

Master Card, American Express, and Visa are accepted as a means of payment at Arathusa.

Arathusa has an infinity swimming pool that overlooks the waterhole. Each of the four remote Suites also has its own plunge pool.

VAT (Value Added Tax) is calculated at 15% and included in the price of most goods, services and hotel accommodation. Foreign tourists qualify for a VAT refund on items purchased and taken out of the country upon departure. No VAT refund may be claimed on goods consumed or services rendered.
