Off of the sand, there are plenty of activities to entertain the whole family, including the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo, the USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park (50 miles northwest) and Waterville USA – a 20-acre water park. While in town, indulge in plenty of fresh seafood, especially oysters – the area's specialty.

Dubbed the "Sunset Capital of Alabama," 14-mile-long Dauphin Island sits at the southernmost point of the state. For some of the best views of the Gulf, head to East End Beach. Or, spend the day shelling at West End Beach. Along with its pristine beaches, Dauphin Island is home to a variety of family-friendly attractions, including historic Fort Gaines, the Dauphin Island Sea Lab and the Audubon Bird Sanctuary. You'll fall in love with the small-town feel here while browsing the boutique shops or chowing down on locally caught seafood at the island's laid-back restaurants.

This stretch of Alabama coastline beckons to beachgoers with its alabaster sands and ample outdoor pursuits. Branyon Backcountry Trail, a 28-mile trail system featuring prime wildlife spotting, including birds, coyote, whitetail deer and alligators. One of the nice features of Alabama Point Beach is how wide it is, with more than 6,000 feet of beach area to scout a spot for the day. Pack a lunch to enjoy the shade at one of the picnic areas. Besides relaxation and swimming time, be sure to explore the sand dunes at the beach and boardwalks.

One of the most unique beaches in Alabama is the small, quaint peninsula of Fort Morgan . The beach surrounds the historic fort, which was an active military site during several wars, including the Civil War. It is more remote than other beaches, about 20 miles outside of the downtown Gulf Shores area, but it is well worth the scenic drive and secluded beach.

Though Fort Morgan beach is not really used as a public beach, it can be accessed by paying the entry fee to the Fort complex. This can make for a full day by combining some historic sightseeing and time by the water. The quiet beach is a nice alternative to some of the more populated public beaches and is located less than an hour from the Gulf Shores.

Much of the area is part of the Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge , so you will likely spot many species of birds and other animals.

Romar Beach requires paid parking, but it has easy access and is a perfect location if you are just looking for a post-dinner beach stroll or an afternoon picnic by the water. The beach is small, but that is why many people like it.

The public beach on Dauphin Island is worth the getaway from the popular beach scenes in the Orange Beach and Gulf Shores areas. The island is 14 miles long, with long stretches of sand and ocean surf. The beach is pet-friendly and safe for families.

If you want to add in some education with your swim, you can take a peek at the 19th-century Fort Gaines located on the island, which still features original cannons. Bike and kayak rentals are available, or you can take a walk on one of the trails in the area near the beach.

You can reach Dauphin Island by ferry from the Gulf Shores or Orange Beach by taking the Mobile Bay Ferry from Fort Morgan over to Dauphin Island (weather dependent). You can drive to Dauphin Island from Mobile by heading south and accessing the island bridge.

One of the best-known secrets of the Orange Beach area is Robinson Island, which attracts both swimmers and boaters. Robinson Island is one of three small sandbar islands located north of the Perdido Pass bridge. These islands are popular with locals and are only accessible by boat.

The islands, which include Bird and Walker islands, are all shorebird nesting habitats, so visitors are strongly encouraged to stay in the beach areas and not venture inland in order to protect the habitat. Other visitor restrictions include no pets on the island.

You can get to Robinson Island by taking an island cruise that includes a stop there for swimming. Another option is to book a kayak tour from Coastal Kayaks, which offers a day trip to the islands.

Little Lagoon Pass in Gulf Shores is a family-friendly public beach access area. It is located across the street from where Little Lagoon empties into the Gulf. It is a good option if you are looking for a place that offers both beach access and amenities like public parking, restrooms, and outdoor showers.

The shallower water is great for families with small children. There is also a small public park at Little Lagoon Pass, where you can find a shady spot to enjoy a packed lunch. The area is close to other attractions and a fishing pier, so you can make it a full beach day in one location.

Much of Alabama's Gulf Coast consists of long sweeps of salt marsh that have folded around the contours of Mobile Bay. In other places, the coast boasts long, low beaches, similar to those found on the Florida Panhandle. From the Gulf Shores which caters more toward tourists to the more quiet, laid back vibe of Dauphin Island, Alabama's beach options offer a little something for everyone.

Gulf Shores

Best beach for tourists

There are several gorgeous white sand beaches in the city of Gulf Shores. The most commercial among them is the Gulf Shores Main Public Beach. You'll find open-air pavilions, picnic areas, volleyball nets, and during the summer, a lot of tourists. From March to November, parking is $5 for 4 hours, or $10 for the day. During summer, come early for a parking space.  

Visit The Hangout, a restaurant and live music venue nearby. Go in late May and catch the Hangout Music festival, a three-day celebration featuring an eclectic lineup (you'll get everyone from Tom Petty to Vampire Weekend).

If you're looking for a more natural beach experience in Gulf Shores, consider Gulf State Park. There are 2 miles of beach here, as well as a nature center (9 am to 4 pm Monday to Friday), a dog park and roughly 25 miles of hiking and cycling trails – keep an eye peeled for gators.

Orange Beach

Best beach for variety

Orange Beach is the easternmost city in Alabama, located between Gulf Shores and Perdido Key, Florida. The beaches stretch for nearly eight miles, with several public access areas. Typically, these beaches are less crowded than those at Gulf Shores.  Consider Cotton Bayou, a small, beach area in Gulf State Park. You'll find free parking and easy beach access.

Want to be in two states at once? Head down Beach Boulevard to the Flora-Bama , a legendary beach bar and roadhouse located on the Orange Beach/Perdido Key, Florida line. While you're there, catch a bite to eat and some live music. The bar is also the host of the annual  mullet toss  and Polar Bear Dip (a New Year's dip in the cold sea – comes with a free drink). Flora-Bama has tried to get mullet tossing into the  Guinness Book of World Records,  but its time hasn't come, yet.

Take a day and travel by boat to Robinson Island which was purchased by the city of Orange Beach in 2003. While the island is a sanctuary for birds and wildlife, it's also a popular site for boaters looking for a good time – expect large crowds for Memorial Day and 4th of July.

Dauphin Island

Best beach for bird watching

On the west side of Mobile Bay, Dauphin Island is a sandy escape beloved by generations of Southerners. The low, windswept barrier island has a population of about 1240 residents and roughly 10 times that number of vacation rentals (just kidding, but only just). The island is rife with raised homes and coastal condos. Its also dotted with shell middens, hills of shells and other detritus left from Indigenous cultures.

Beyond its public beaches, which are uniformly flat and sandy, Dauphin Island's main natural attractions are the Audubon Bird Sanctuary and the Estuarium . The bird sanctuary is a site of vital wildlife importance, marking the first stop for avian life migrating north from Central and South America; for more information on birding on Dauphin Island, check out www.coastalbirding.org . The Estuarium is a family-friendly aquarium complex that highlights fauna in four key coastal Alabama habitats, and acts as the public education space for the Dauphin Island Sea Lab, Alabama's primary marine research facility. Best beach for exploring

From Dauphin Island, you can take the Mobile Bay Ferry on a 40-minute trip to Fort Morgan. Not only can you explore the grounds which include a beach and nature paths, but you'll also discover a bit of American history, too. Fort Morgan is a fortress built as Fort Bowyer during the War of 1812 to protect against potential British invasion of Mobile Bay. Later, the fort saw use during the Civil War, Spanish American War and both World Wars. Today, the crumbling remains of the fortifications have been bleached by sun and sand, giving this site a lonely, elegant atmosphere. Costumed re-enactors and historical interpretation exhibits can be found onsite.

Fairhope Municipal Pier and Park

Best beach for a walk

While not ideal for swimming the Fairhope Municipal Park and Pier is a great place for a family stroll. Take a walk down the more than 1400 foot pier and sit on a bench to watch the birds or go fishing. The park features a rose garden and fountain, picnic tables, duck pond and a sandy beach with playground.   There is no cost to walk down the pier, however nonresidents are charged park admission during the summer season.

While you're there, head on over to the city's center. Consistently a top contender on best small towns lists, Fairhope's walkable downtown is full of small businesses and art galleries. In point of fact, the town's local arts walk is a much beloved event that draws in visitors from across South Alabama and the Florida Panhandle. Other reasons to stay? Proximity to Mobile Bay and Gulf Coast beaches, and sidewalks lined with azaleas and other local flowering plants, which give off a sweet scent as the moon descends on a warm spring or summer night.

P ristine white sand, blue-green waters, and endless sunshine are the usual description of the beaches in Alabama. As an Alabama native, I can confirm that it’s all of these and more. Whether you’re looking for a secluded beach getaway or an active beach experience with water sports and activities, the beautiful beaches in Alabama absolutely have it all!

Beaches in Alabama

Although the beaches in Alabama stay beautiful year-round, there are some months during which visiting makes more sense. The spring in late April and May along with the fall in September and October is when the temperatures are warm enough for a pleasant swimming experience. Also, accommodation costs in the area are still relatively low. However, if your heart is set on summer, time your trip for after July 4th to get the best deals.

Beaches in Alabama have all types of accommodations to choose from. They include hotels, condos, cottages, and campsites. Some areas have more of one accommodation type over the rest, so I’ve included details below for each of the beaches. 

• Orange Beach

Beautiful alabaster sands, blue waves, and outdoor attractions make Orange Beach one of the most famous beaches in Alabama. Being popular among tourists means there are all sorts of facilities, restaurants, and attractions like water sports peppered along the coastline. It’s everyone’s go-to beach for a fun time so expect a crowd!

Try flyboarding for an action-packed adventure, lounge at the beach, go golfing at one of the nearby courses, or check out the Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail. Visit Alabama Point Beach, on Orange Beach, for a moment to yourself if you need a mini-escape. With a boardwalk and beautiful photo ops, you’ll get the quiet respite you’re craving.

Later, check out The Wharf for the ultimate family-fun destination. It has shopping, food, arcade games, and mini-golf for maximum fun! Orange Beach is the perfect place for youngsters looking to explore the area’s nightlife, as well.  Flora-Bama and Mudbugs Seafood Bar and Grill are good places to start!

Take the kids for a day out at the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo , or perhaps to Waterville USA , a 20-acre water park in the vicinity. Later, stop by the Original Oyster House for the area’s specialty – oysters!

• Tip: Eat out early to beat the crowd! Arriving at around 5-5:30 pm is absolutely necessary, especially during peak season.

• Fort Morgan Public Beach

Located less than an hour away from Gulf Shores, sits Fort Morgan Public Beach , one of the most unique beaches in Alabama. Fort Morgan itself is known for its National Historic Landmark status, dating back to the 19th century, when it was built to protect Mobile. Although the quiet, secluded site might initially only interest history buffs, it has enough to do for beach lovers as well.

Most of the area on the peninsula is part of the Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge , so bird watchers can expect to spot some migrating birds during their visit. Lounge by the water’s edge and take in the panoramic view of the ocean without the usual crowd one would expect at a beach. Once you’re ready for a new activity, you can explore the fort for a small fee.

The beach has only two access points and very few facilities so make sure you bring everything you need when visiting. The nearest accommodations are also at Gulf Shores, so be sure to arrive and leave early to make the most of your trip.

• Tip: If you're planning to cook at your accommodation, make sure to stock up on groceries while still in town. Grocery stores are few and far between on Fort Morgan Road!

Located on the Fort Morgan peninsula and extending all the way to Mobile Bay, West Beach is referred to by many locals and tourists as the “best beach.” This is due to the fact that most think of it as the more quiet and serene cousin of the happening Gulf Shores!

West Beach offers families the chance to unwind privately while still staying in close proximity to the action of Gulf Shores. The many luxury condos, hotels, and restaurants indicate the beach has no shortage of places to stay and eat.

Its nearby location to attractions like amusement park Adventure Island and the Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge means there are fun things for everyone to do in West Beach. If you’re lucky you might even get to see sea turtles or an Alabama Beach Mouse!

• Tip: Just about the entire beach is open to the public despite the many private, luxury homes.
• Gulf State Park

Ideal for travelers craving both adventure and relaxation, Gulf State Park offers 28 miles of trails for hiking and a 2-mile long beach for lazy lounging. Surrounded by cottages, cabins, and campsites, the beach is great for outdoorsy folk looking for budget accommodations. If lounging around feels right, the Beach Pavilion area is a beautiful spot for relaxing. Dauphin Island Park and Beach offers camping grounds with around 150 sites for visitors to use. Facilities like free wifi, bath houses, laundry facilities, and a playground area make camping here a family-friendly adventure. True to its name, Orange Beach, Alabama is obviously a beachy destination. But there’s so much more this place offers! I’ve traveled a few times to Orange Beach and nearby Gulf Shores, and these are the must-see activities in the area.

But first, if you’re wondering where this lovely beach town is, let’s get specific.

Where is Orange Beach Alabama?

Located on the Gulf Coast of Alabama, just across the Florida state line on the panhandle is Orange Beach. It’s right next to Gulf Shores, Alabama. In fact, the two towns are like sisters and it’s often thought of as one destination when visiting.

Things to do in Orange Beach Alabama

1. Beach time at Cotton Bayou Beach

You know I had to start this list off with the beach, right? 😍

These crisp, white-sand beaches are what draws you into this destination, and rightfully so. Some of the most gorgeous sand on the planet is in Orange Beach, Alabama. (This is saying a lot considering my time in Maui , Anna Maria Island , Costa Rica, Culebra Puerto Rico , and dozens of other popular beachy spots.)

Anyhow, there are a few beaches along the coast and all of them are spectacular. One of my favorites is Cotton Bayou Beach. With ultra-soft sand, you’ll enjoy dipping your toes into it. 

Swimming is welcome, too! The warmest Gulf Coast water and weather for swimming is typically April – October, but if you’re tough or wear a wet suit, you might try it during off-season, too!

Pro tip: bring your beach chairs, umbrella and travel cooler with you. The only services here are the restrooms. Oh, and you’ll need to pay $3 for public beach parking.

2. Take a sandcastle building class

Guyyyyys! This was one of the most fun and memorable things I’ve done in Orange Beach !

Schedule an hour with Sandcastle University to learn how the pros create sandcastles. It’s perfect for couples, families or even large groups. 

You’ll learn the basics of creating an epic sand castle, the kind you feel good bragging about as an adult.😉

Your instructor brings all the tools and teaches the proper techniques – like the right water to sand combination! When a pro teaches you the right methods, the sand castles look like actual castles!

During a family trip to Orange Beach, my 5 and 9 year olds loved building their own creations…but it might have been the parents who had even more fun!

3. Dolphin cruise Orange Beach

One of the coolest things to do in Orange Beach Alabama if you’re an animal lover is to take a dolphin cruise!

Orange Beach sits on a thin strip of land with surrounding channels and bays just to the north of it. The great thing is that these waterways are perfect for water adventures without the strong ocean waves.

Taking a dolphin cruise means you’ll be able to depart from The Wharf and stay on the smooth water. Pods of dolphins live within the channels and it’s perfect for a dolphin tour in Orange Beach. 

Fun fact: These dolphins are smaller than the dolphins that live in the open ocean on the Gulf, because the food they eat is smaller, as apposed to large fish in the open ocean.

Be sure to bring your camera and keep it on the film setting because you never know when a dolphin will pop it’s head up! You can take screenshots of the video if you want photos. 

Pro tip: opt for a sunset cruise to get beautiful water views while watching dolphins!

There are many tour companies offering dolphin cruises. I used Cetacean Cruises and had an absolutely fantastic time! The captain and waitress were so genuine and entertaining – I highly recommend them!

This is such a fun adventure, it could definitely be the highlight of your trip!

4. Hit the trails at Gulf State Park (one of the best Orange Beach activities)

Sitting right between Orange Beach and Gulf Shores is the Gulf State Park. It includes a stretch of beach, multiple lakes and a ton of activities.

One of my favorite ways to stay active while on vacation is through hiking. And while you won’t be climbing steep trails like while hiking in Mount Rainier National Park or hikes in Oahu , you will see some really cool scenery.

With 28 miles of trails interwoven through the area, you’ll have a ton of options to get your sweat on!

One of the most scenic trails in my opinion is the Lake View Trail, with pretty views of the lake! The Beach Mouse Bypass is another fun one, as it’s on an elevated wooden boardwalk. Here’s a link to the trails map to plan out your adventure!

5. Breakfast at OSO Early

I know what you’re thinking….can we get to the food already?! With so many amazing places to eat in Orange Beach, I won’t go through all of my favorites here. But I absolutely must mention OSO Early !

Open for breakfast and lunch, this cute diner is the perfect way to start a lazy beach morning or pass the time on a rainy day.

From traditional breakfast, coffee and a kids’ menu, it has just what you need to start your day.

Pro tip: try the Curious George! It’s the banana cream-cheese stuffed French toast, and it’s to die for!

6. Go for a Ferris Wheel ride

The Wharf at Orange Beach is a fun entertainment area with shops, restaurants and activities. This is one of the most popular spots for hanging out (away from the beach anyhow). So for some good, clean fun, try a Ferris Wheel ride! 

For just a few bucks per person, it’s an affordable way to see the sights of the area.

Fun fact: the Ferris Wheel at The Wharf is one of the largest on the eastern USA! Ride 112 feet in the air while getting a great view of Orange Beach and The Wharf.

7. Jet ski Orange Beach 

No trip to Orange Beach is complete without some fun on the water! Renting jet ski’s at the Flora-Bama Marina was one of the top experiences on a recent trip to the area.

In fact, visiting Flora-Bama and jet skiing is one of the top things to do in Orange Beach Alabama!

Located right on the Florida / Alabama state line, Flora-Bama has several buildings for entertainment. With plenty of food options and outdoor entertainment on the Gulf or the bay, it’s a destination in its own.

Look for the yellow building for jet ski and boat rental for the Flora-Bama Marina.

It’s highly recommended to make reservations in advance, especially during the busy summer season. Oh, and if you’ve never driven a jet ski, it’s not very difficult at all! My first time driving one was jet skiing in Orange Beach.

8. Dine and drinks at The Gulf (a favorite on this list of best things to do in Orange Beach Alabama)

The perfect spot for soaking in all the beachy vibes while relaxing is at The Gulf in Orange Beach.

It’s an outdoor dining experience created from shipping containers. With delicious drinks, food and just the right atmosphere for relaxing. Hang out there after a long day out on the beach, too. 

Settle in with a good Surf’s Up cocktail (pictured above), or one of their many mojitos. Grab a tuna poke bowl, fish sandwich, octopus salad or a variety of fried finger foods. Just lounge under the palm trees while you enjoy yourself!

The Gulf is one of the best Orange Beach Restaurants on the water . Those views are just awesome!

9. Coastal Arts Center of Orange Beach

If you’re an art lover, this is your place! Located on the Wolf Bay in Orange Beach, the Coastal Arts Center is an art gallery and also offers interactive ways to create your own art!

You can visit the area to look at the amazing creations while in a beautiful setting on the water. Or take a class to learn new skills. From painting to glass blowing, it’s one of the most fun, unique things to do in Orange Beach!

10. Make your own pottery at a clay studio (one of the most unique Orange Beach Alabama attractions)

Time to get a little crafty and a little dirty for this next one! Located at the Coastal Arts Center of Orange Beach, this gem is the perfect way to spend a rainy day!

11. Romar Beach (one of my favorite things to do in Orange Beach Alabama)

I know, I know, this beach looks similar to the last. But that’s because it is! The beaches along Alabama’s 32 miles of sand are so similar . But isn’t part of the fun of going to a beachy destination checking them all out?

This beach is gorgeous and the perfect example of what you’ll find in an Alabama Beach!

If traveling with kids, grab some beach sand toys for extra fun. And for everyone else, snorkeling can be fun, too. During my last trip to Orange Beach, there were tons of sting rays all along the shoreline ! 

Snorkeling Romar Beach is not like the snorkeling beaches of Kauai because there’s no reef system (which means the sand is super soft!), so you won’t see colorful coral, but it’s a fun time in the water anyway!

My husband and I almost always take our own snorkeling gear with us. It’s pretty inexpensive and gives us ultimate flexibility on when we want to get in the water. This is the snorkeling gear I travel with, and highly recommend it!

12. Segway Tour

Back off the water, this is one of my new, favorite past-times: taking a Segway Tour ! I haven’t had the chance to do it at Orange Beach yet, but did get to enjoy one on a girl’s trip to Sandusky, Ohio and it was soooo much fun!

The Segway Tour in Orange Beach rides the Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trails , riding through trails and 6 distinct ecosystems, which would be really cool to see! And if you’ve never ridden a Segway, it’s actually relatively easy and the tours start out with lessons. 😊

Pro tip: wear good shoes (not sandals) to prevent slipping and provide arch support (you’ll use your feet muscles!) And bring a water bottle.

13. Free bike rentals at Gulf State Park

Sticking with the wheels theme! Up next is one of the best, free things to do in Orange Beach Alabama.

Alabama’s Gulf State Park has a fun, free bike-sharing program. It’s a cool way to see the area and get some exercise in! You know those hiking trails we talked about in #4 above? Well, hop on a bike and explore them!

This is how bike-sharing works: 

• Find a bike through the bike share program
• Scan the QR code at the site to download the free app
• Use the app to scan the QR code on the bike(s)
• That will unlock the bike and track it’s location as you ride
• When finished, return the bike to a drop off spot (doesn’t have to be the same one)
• Lock it with the app

That sounds like a lot but honestly it takes 2 minutes to grab your bike and go !

I especially like that there are baskets on the front for items you may need to bring with you (like water!)

T here are several locations for picking up and dropping off the bikes. I hopped on one near the Woodside Restaurant (one of my favorite, fun places to eat in Gulf Shores .) But there are many other locations throughout the park.

The only downfall is that the bikes are standard and there aren’t kid sizes. So this is a fun activity for a friend’s trip, couples or families with adult children.

14. Mini golf Orange Beach

It’s one of the best things to do in Orange Beach with kids, although this is a favorite for all ages. It’s good, clean fun and a way to bring on a little competition on your vacation to Orange Beach!

15. Crab hunting at night

Looking for a fun nighttime activity? Hunting for crabs on the shore after dark is one of the most unique activities in Orange Beach. A great spot to hunt for crabs is the shores at Gulf State Park.

If you’re traveling with kids, grab a net and see how many you can find. Be sure to catch and release! 

When my family went during one of our trips to Orange Beach and Gulf Shores, the most crabs we found were slightly higher on the shore than the water line. You might see them try to run into their crab holes to escape!

16. Waterfront dining at GT’s on the Bay

A favorite for all ages is GT’s on the Bay . With waterfront and outdoor dining, it’s the perfect spot for lunch or dinner. In fact, it’s one of the most fun things to do in Orange Beach!

If you like shrimp, the firecracker shrimp is a must! If fish is what you’re after, you absolutely must have the Mahi-Mahi sandwich. Both are amazing!

Kids will love the pirate ship, obstacle course and sand playground while parents love the live music and outdoor bar. No worries being bored here waiting for a table!

17. Visit Lake Shelby

A picturesque scene just steps away from the salt water Gulf Coast, Lake Shelby is a freshwater lake in the Gulf State Park. It’s a scenic setting for walking, hiking, biking and fishing. You’ll actually find freshwater and saltwater fish in the lake, and fishing for blue crab is popular, too!

(Shelby Lakes actually consists of multiple lakes, but the most popular is the largest, known as Lake Shelby.)

Note: if you want to fish, you’ll need a local fishing license. Learn more about that here .

Fun fact: along with fishing, there are swimming areas at Lake Shelby, despite the fact that there are residents alligators. The alligators stick to themselves in the areas that aren’t as frequented as people.

18. Hang out at The Wharf (a must-do on this list of best things to do in Orange Beach)

Whether you’ve had a full day on the beach or it’s cool and rainy outside, you’ll find plenty to do at The Wharf. It’s definitely one of the best things to do in Orange Beach Alabama.

Fun for all ages, The Wharf at Orange Beach is an entertainment district full of restaurants, shops, condos and a ton of activities.

If you’re looking for a high-adventure activity, then this is it! Renting a Polaris Slingshot for the day is a fun, unique way to see the area!

If you’re looking for an early morning pick-me-up or want to hang out at a coffee house for a bit, then The Southern Grind Coffee House is a perfect spot for you.

With your choice of traditional breakfast like bacon and eggs, breakfast bowls or want to stick to a coffee or smoothie, there’s a little bit of everything at the Southern Grind . My family enjoyed coffee, smoothies and a pretty great breakfast!

While you’re there, check out the souvenirs and artisan gifts in the shop. From beachy artwork to seashell décor and so much more, you might just find the prefect thing at The Southern Grind.

21. Go kayaking

Giving out virtual high-5’s to anyone who loves kayaking! 🖐 From kayaking during a weekend in San Diego to kayaking Lake Erie at Put-in-Bay, Ohio , I’ve kayaked almost every coast possible in the USA.

So I was thrilled to learn I could kayak at the lake at the Gulf State Park!

Whether you’re traveling with your significant other, as part of a group trip or with older kids, kayaking on Lake Shelby is a fun activity for all.

You can rent kayaks right on Lake Shelby near the picnic and dog park through Gulf State Park Boats and Bikes. No need for a reservation though, it’s first come, first serve so show up when you want to paddle on the lake!

22. Visit the Gulf State Park Pier

Right down the street from kayaking is the Gulf State Park Pier. Walk the pier and see gorgeous views of the coast! Or learn about the local wildlife through all the signage as you walk the pier. See how many species of birds you can spot!

If you’re into fishing, the Gulf State Park Pier is actually the largest fishing pier on the Gulf. You can buy a day license and rent gear right on the pier, too. More info here .

Or, visit the souvenir shop or grab a bite to eat at the nearby ByWater Beachside Beach Bar & Grill .

Note: The pier was severely damaged during Hurricane Sally in 2020. A large section is gone ( watch a video of the damage ). However they’ve opened it so visitors and locals can use the pier through the stable section, which still gives fun views of the coast!

23. Hit up the local brewery or distillery

If you like eating, or in this case drinking local, I’ve got just the list for you! Gulf Shores and Orange Beach still has that small-town vibe in some situations, so there’s not as many brewery options as a place like Breckenridge, CO.

However, you’ll find tasty brews and drinks at the few places they do have!

24. Relax at the spa

It’s a perfect way to just get away from it all and enjoy your vacation in true relaxation! Book a massage, facial, pedicure, or get your hair done!

Book a couples massage for a romantic getaway, escape while the rest of the family plays at the beach, or grab your friends and enjoy getting your nails done, there’s so many ways to feel pampered and relaxed in Orange Beach.

25. Go sea shell hunting

A favorite for all ages while on a beach vacation in Alabama is searching for sea shells! Whether you have a giant collection at home you’re looking to add to, or this is your first opportunity to hunt for sea shells on the beach, it’s always a fun time.

There’s a bit of seasonality for hunting sea shells, just like there is for seaweed. However you should be able to find small shells and sand dollars almost year round in Orange Beach, Alabama.

Pro tip: to find the best shells, be sure to go early in the day. By evening the good shells are usually gone because the beach has been picked over by fellow hunters.

26. Got kids? Visit the playground

Orange Beach has so many public areas to enjoy, including a waterfront park and kids playground. Unfortunately, it was significantly damaged during Hurricane Sally’s arrival, so the pier on Wolf Bay is closed at the time of article publication.

However, the playground is a great spot for kids to run out some energy ! Whether you need a break from the waves or it’s a little chilly in Orange Beach, this public playground is a great alternative where kids can be creative and have fun.

27. Gulf State Park Interpretive Center

Perhaps one of the coolest educational centers you’ll find along the Gulf Coast, the Gulf State Park Interpretive Center is an impressive set of structures that should be visited by everyone traveling to the area.

The Interpretive Center is actually one of the most eco-friendly buildings in the entire state of Alabama, passing the Living Building Challenge. It actually produces its own electricity and water – and then some – resulting in a net positive for water and energy!

The building was created from local materials and takes advantage of the natural resources of the area – the warm sun and ocean breeze. Smart, right?

The Interpretive Center has a large education center as well. Visitors can learn about the local flora, fauna, habitats and a variety of living species that live in the Gulf State Park and surrounding region. I was super impressed with this area and it’s definitely one of the best things to do in Orange Beach Alabama.

28. Paddle board on Middle Lake

A much smaller lake than Lake Shelby, but still worth a visit is the Middle Lake within the Gulf State Park. This is a quieter, calm lake with a serene setting, and a good spot to witness nature at work.

I recommend renting stand-up paddle boards through Island Life Kayaks and Paddle Boards and spending some time on the lake. There’s a boat launch at Middle Lake, so put your kayaks in there and enjoy the sights!

29. Sunset on the beach

Nothing beats a sunset on the beach, right? Well the Gulf Coast has some pretty spectacular ones! So grab a seat at any of the local beaches (Romar Beach is my favorite!) and enjoy a beautiful sunset.

Just a quick note, during the fall and winter the sun rises and sets on the water, so you’ll get the most direct sunsets during that time of year . In the summer it sets on land and isn’t directly seen from the beach. But obviously you’ll still get that sunset glow during the summer!

30. Take a sunset Tiki Bar Cruise

This one just sounds fun, doesn’t it? If you’re into sunsets and cocktails, you’ll love catching a sunset cruise on a tiki bar ! Float your worries away on a tiki bar as you watch the sun going down in the beautiful water surrounding Orange Beach.

This is a BYOB, which is perfect if you’re traveling as a couple, with friends, or go light if traveling with kids!

31. Hang out at Alabama Point East (another favorite on this list of best things to do in Orange Beach Alabama)

With a little more remote location this beach is a bit harder to get to, but that just means fewer people to share the beach with!

With mellow waves and less rough surf, this is by far one of the best calm options if you enjoy swimming in the Gulf. It’s perfect for kids, too due to the shallow beach and calm waves.

Alabama Point East is also a perfect spot to watch the sunset (if you don’t have enough of those ideas already). 😉

Note: there are restrooms at this beach, but closer to the parking lot so prepare yourself to walk as needed.

Pro tip: take comfy shoes (I recommend water shoes) because the boardwalk to the beach is quite long. Then you’ll have support for the walk and water shoes can transition right into the water and sand with no challenges. These are my favorite water shoes that I took to Orange Beach (and they go everywhere with me!)

32. Find the most Instagrammable spots in Orange Beach

Whether you’re an online content creator or just love to capture photos from your travels, there are plenty of opportunities in Orange Beach. 

Here are some of the best spots for photos in the area:

• The fish sculptures at The Wharf
• Entry landscaping/palm tree median at The Wharf
• The Gulf outdoor restaurant
• Alabama Point East
• Literally any Orange Beach Alabama beach because they’re all beautiful

33. The Yard Gulf Shores

Alright so I’m cheating here as this one is in Gulf Shores. The two cities are so close together, and this such a perfect fit for this list I have to include it!

If you’re an ice cream lover or have a sweet tooth, you absolutely must visit The Yard Milkshake Bar . Every time I’ve visited the area, I’ve tried something new at The Yard – and spoiler – it’s all good! 😋

With fun flavors like Salted Caramel Cheesecake, The Unicorn, The Mermaid, The Cereal Killer and Cookie Butter Me Up, you’re bound to find something you’ll like!

Before this post about the best things to do in Orange Beach is wrapped up, let’s talk about a few more super important details!

Where to stay in Orange Beach

There are a variety of vacation rental properties and hotels in Orange Beach and Gulf Shores. You’ll have plenty of options depending on your style and the amenities you’re looking for. Condos and beach homes are popular in this area, and there’s a bunch of hotels that line the beach, too.

I love staying right on the beach, and most recently stayed in the heart of Orange Beach at Harbour Place, Unit 406.

It was perfect for my family, including 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a balcony with partial beach views and a pool and hot tub! It included free parking and the elevator was super convenient. With direct beach access, we couldn’t ask for anything more!

Nearest airport to Orange Beach

At the time of publication, the closest large commercial airport to Gulf Shores is Pensacola International Airport, about an hour east of Orange Beach. Alternatively, you could fly into the Mobile Regional Airport, about two hours northwest of the area.

Current plans are underway for commercial flights to be added to the expanded Gulf Shores International Airport, which would make airplane travel super convenient. Check the official airport website for details.

How to get around Orange Beach

Orange Beach is spread out so a rental car is the most convenient way to get around Orange Beach, Alabama.

I love using Discover Cars when traveling because I typically save 10-30%. It’s basically an online search engine for cars that’s free to use, and the most reliable car companies are on there.

For in-town trips, rideshares like Uber and Lyft are available.

What to pack for Orange Beach

As you’re making your way through all the activities and things to do in Orange Beach, you want to be prepared with all the right gear.

Let’s just sum this up by saying swimming suits and flip flops are the top things to pack!

But in all seriousness, here’s a list of the top items I take to Orange Beach (and other beachy destinations)

• Two swimming suits, two swim covers and a few other weather-appropriate outfits. Sun dresses, shorts and layers for the evening is really all you need in Orange Beach! I love merino wool for travel , because it’s perfect to create layers and regulate your body temperature.
• Lightweight beach towel , beach bag and beach hat. Don’t forget the essentials for a perfect day at the beach!
• Sunglasses and a lens cloth . Sitting on the beach with the salty air, you’ll want to keep your sunglasses and phone lenses clean.
• Ocean-safe sunblock . This one’s my favorite and it smells great! Always make sure the sunblock is reef safe to protect our oceans.
• Body glide . This is to protect your thighs if they like rubbing together. Wearing swimwear and dresses plus ocean air and humidity can cause real problems on those legs! You’ll be glad you have some Body Glide.

Alabama might not be the first place that comes to mind when you think about a beach vacation, but that’s a mistake. This southern state is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the U.S. However, it can be hard to figure out where on the Alabama coast you should plan to visit since there are so many options.

To help make your planning process easier, we evaluated Alabama’s most popular beach destinations to find the best beaches in Alabama you should visit, no matter what sort of beach lover you are.

1. Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge

The Bon Secour refuge is a hidden gem on Alabama’s coast. With winding trails that lead down to the coast, you can get immersed in the local wildlife. There are multiple hikes you can take at any time of year. However, if you get a chance to visit during the summer, make sure to bring a bathing suit.

The refuge’s beaches feature multiple swimming areas where you can get up close with the sea life that calls this area home. The trail to get to the beach is open even when the visitor’s center isn’t, so you can head to the sand virtually any time you want.

Bottom Line: Not many out-of-towners know about the refuge, so it won’t be too crowded while you’re there. Just keep in mind that there aren’t any lifeguards on duty, so use extra caution when swimming.

2. Cotton Bayou Beach

Cotton Bayou Beach is a favorite among locals because it has a homey ambiance with fewer strict regulations than other beaches on the Gulf.

Visitors are even allowed to set up tents during the day to get out of the sun since there isn’t much natural shade on the shore. The beach is mostly a local hot spot, so you won’t find many tourists , which makes parking and scoping out a spot a breeze.

The beach’s sand is soft and fluffy, making it comfortable to walk on. Though the sand gets kicked up easily, the beach has publicly available showers you can use to get cleaned up afterward.

The beach is maintained by the city, so colored flags are diligently posted to let beach-goers know if there are jellyfish, choppy waters, or other conditions to be concerned about.

3. Dauphin Island East End Public Beach

Dauphin Island is another hidden gem in Alabama. While the entire town is known for its coast, the East End Public Beach is one of the best ways to see it for yourself. The beach is lined with soft, white sand that contrasts starkly with its bright blue water.

This beach is well-equipped for families and small gatherings. There are covered picnic tables you can use to stay in the shade or wait out the short rain showers that can pop up. In recent years, the beach has become a popular spot for photoshoots for local weddings or senior pictures.

If you’re looking for a beach location to take one-of-a-kind vacation pictures, this is the place to do it. The dunes, sand, and water really pop in photos no matter what time of day you take them.

4. Dauphin Island West End Public Beach

The West End Public Beach is located on the western side of Dauphin Island, not far from its sister beach, the East End Public Beach. With numerous public amenities, including showers, a picnic area, and even beach chair rentals, you don’t have to worry about anything but remembering your sunscreen while you’re here.

The beach and its water are incredibly clean and regularly maintained for visitors. It opens officially during the summer, but you can access the shore year-round. Just don’t expect to have access to the beach’s normal services during the off-season, which usually lasts from October until April.

The beach is open until 6 p.m. However, you can still stay on the sand after that time. Swimming isn’t recommended, though, as there are no lifeguards on duty.

5. Ft. Morgan Fishing Beach

Don’t let the name fool you into thinking you can only fish while you’re at Ft. Morgan Beach. You can do a lot more than that.

This beach is rarely ever crowded because many tourists assume you need fishing gear to have a good time here. That means you’ll have the entire expanse of sand virtually to yourself. You can bring beach chairs and umbrellas to relax all day without any worries.

The beach is popular for fishing because a lot of sea creatures venture near the shore here. You can see tiny crabs on the sand, typically near the water. You can even see dolphins in the distance if you’re patient enough. This beach is also a great place for shell hunters of all ages.

6. Gulf Shores Public Beach

Gulf Shores has its fair share of beaches, but its main public beach is considered one of the city’s best. This part of the coast is within walking distance of Gulf Shores’ amenities, so if you forget something for your beach day, you’re never too far away from getting a replacement.

The beach’s parking area is also close to the sand, and it even has wheelchair accessibility for people with mobility concerns. The sand is pristine. No matter how much foot traffic there is, the sand doesn’t get disturbed too much, thanks to the meticulous effort the city puts into keeping it clean.

The beach also has showers visitors can use, so you don’t have to worry about tracking sand with you wherever you go. On summer weekends, you might want to get to the beach early to ensure you get a spot.

7. Gulf State Park

Gulf State Park has over 2 miles of coast for visitors to lounge on. Depending on when you go, you might encounter gentle, still water that’s perfect for wading in, or you might encounter more waves if you want to go surfing.

The campground is only 1.5 miles away from the beach, so you can easily walk back and forth if you reserve a site. Since the beach is part of a state park, there are plenty of educational activities during the summer for young kids.

The water usually doesn’t start getting warm enough to swim in comfortably until June, but it can stay at a comfortable temperature until well into November. Even when it’s too chilly to swim, you can still take a leisurely walk on the sand.

8. North Beach Park

With its trees and wide stretches of sand, North Beach Park in Fairhope is a quaint beach that’s perfect for relaxation.

If you have a hammock , locals recommend you bring it since you’ll be able to fasten it between a few of the trees lining the sand. However, even without one, you’re still able to enjoy some much-needed shade on a hot and sunny summer day.

You can even walk to a local pond to watch the ducks if you need a break from the sea for a while. The beach is clean and well-maintained every morning for beach-goers. That fact is even more impressive, considering many people love to come to the beach at night to watch the stars.

Hot Tip: There are nearby restaurants you can head to, or you can have a picnic on the sand if you’d prefer.

9. Romar Beach

If you like impromptu trips to the coast, Romar Beach is the perfect place in Alabama for you.

There aren’t many amenities near the beach, but it’s known for being a hot spot for beach getaways since there are numerous condos and hotels you can book for a short stay. If you have a car with you, you’re a short drive away from anything you might need.

The beach itself is natural and pristine. Not much development has reached the sand, so the area’s wildlife is able to thrive. You can go on peaceful walks on the sand and wade in the water. However, make sure you’re careful when you swim since there aren’t any lifeguards on duty here.

The sand is naturally maintained, too, since there isn’t much foot traffic other than the people who are staying in the area.

10. Wind Creek State Park

Lake Martin is a freshwater lake that’s slowly gaining the recognition it deserves as a top beach destination in Alabama. The water at Wind Creek State Park is clean and safe to swim in, and since it’s a lake, there aren’t any strong currents to worry about.

With 1,444 beautiful acres to enjoy, there is no shortage of things to do in the area. Anglers love coming for fishing tournaments each year. Also, if the beach isn’t enough of a draw, there is bird watching and numerous hiking trails to keep you entertained. There’s a campground that includes campsites and camping cabins with excellent amenities for those who want to stay the weekend.

The beach usually isn’t that busy, but the weekends of Memorial Day, Labor Day, and the 4th of July can bring more people to the lake. Keep that in mind and either avoid those weekends or be prepared to get there early to make sure you get a spot.

Alabama has many beaches just waiting for you to visit. While we highly recommend all the options we gave, we’re hoping a few stood out enough to make it to the top of your travel to-do list.

Although I’m a California girl now, I was born and raised in Alabama. When it was time for a spring break trip or summer vacation, my family did what many all over the Southeast did: load up the station wagon or minivan and drive south towards the beaches of the Gulf Coast.

The destination? Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, Alabama. 

My husband and I have returned often to the Gulf Coast, although we had not yet taken our kids to the coast of Alabama until recently. A summer family reunion finally gave us the opportunity to spend a full week in Orange Beach and Gulf Shores revisiting the Alabama beaches of my childhood.

Gulf Shores and Orange Beach are well known all over the South as a relatively inexpensive, family-friendly beach destination. Now that I live outside the South, however, I’ve come to realize that much of the rest of the country is clueless about this area! If they do vaguely know about the region, most people certainly don’t know just how much it has to offer. Now that I’ve been to hundreds of beaches around the country and the world, I realize Alabama’s sugar white sand beaches and calm turquoise waters have ruined me for nearly everywhere else.

What I also love about going to Gulf Shores and Orange Beach is that a vacation doesn’t necessarily require a ton of planning. So many travel destinations in 2023 require advance bookings. Activities can sell out if you don’t plan super early, but that’s just not the case for an Alabama Beaches vacation. It’s entirely possible to just spend a full week in the area enjoying the sand, sun, and water. And there is also a lot to do in the area for families, even on a whim – particularly eating great seafood or embarking in a few adventurous activities. 

If you are considering a trip to Gulf Shores or Orange Beach, this article has everything a first time Alabama Beaches visitor needs to know.

Where are the Alabama Beaches?

So many people (especially those who live outside the Southeast) don’t even realize that Alabama is a beach destination. The panhandle of Florida eats up most of the real estate due south of the state, so Alabama’s swath of coastline is often missed after a quick glance at the map.

But Alabama has two counties along the coast – Mobile County on the west bordering Mississippi and Baldwin County on the east bordering the Florida panhandle. The two counties are separated by the Mobile Bay.

When most people refer to Alabama’s beaches, they are mostly referring to two cities in Baldwin County: Gulf Shores and Orange Beach. There are a few other beaches in the area (particularly the beaches along Dauphin Island in Mobile County) but they don’t have a lot of lodging or dining options.

Sub-Regions, Major Cities, & Layout of Alabama’s Gulf Coast: Gulf Shores vs. Orange Beach

The Alabama beaches in Baldwin County lie along 32 miles of coastline, stretching from the Florida border all the way to the tip of the Fort Morgan peninsula. Many of the major attractions are located right on the beach road paralleling the coast, Alabama State Route 182 (known as Perdido Beach Road in Orange Beach and Beach Boulevard in Gulf Shores). The beaches are roughly intersected by State Route 59, which is the main thoroughfare that heads inland.

The entire area is very drivable from a home base in any location. And visitors can have the same type of vacation no matter where they stay in Orange Beach, Gulf Shores, or beyond. But there are some very minor geographical and historical differences to note.

Major cities and regions in the area include:

Gulf Shores

Gulf Shores is the older, more established beach area in the region that is still the center of most of the action. Gulf Shores sits at the intersection of State Routes 182 and 59. Some lodging locations may have activities and restaurants that are walkable or bike-able.

Orange Beach

The stretch of beach that extends from Gulf Coast State park to Perdido Key, Florida on the east is known as Orange Beach. This area was developed later than Gulf Shores and still is a bit quieter (although the continued development makes it busier with each passing year!).

Fort Morgan

Keep heading west from Gulf Shores to travel along the Fort Morgan Peninsula. At the very tip is the historic Fort Morgan itself, the site of a Civil War battle. The neighborhood of Gulf Highlands you pass along the way is another popular cluster of vacation properties. 

While not on the beach itself, the inland city of Foley is worth a mention as well. Foley is located about 12 miles due north of Gulf Shores on Highway 59. A lot of visitors to Alabama beaches will spend time in Foley because it is home to some popular outlets, a regional amusement park, and a number of restaurants.

What do I Need to Know about Road Tripping to Gulf Shores and Orange Beach?

The vast majority of visitors to the Alabama Beaches come in by car. Gulf Shores and Orange Beach serve a pretty broad drive market that includes most of the Southeast. I was pretty surprised to find out recently from a friend in Kentucky that many families from her area make the road trip regularly every year! Even Illinois and Indiana-based travelers are also frequent visitors. 

With so many cars piling onto such a short stretch of beach, that can mean traffic congestion. Traffic on Saturdays and Sundays can be especially crushing in the summer as weeklong vacationers tend to arrive and depart on the weekends. Weekends are also when the grocery stores in the area are at their busiest as newcomers load up their condominiums to start the week.

If you are planning a road trip, allow for plenty of extra time on crowded roads – what might be the last 10 minutes of the drive sometimes can take you a full hour! Use apps like Waze to find alternate back road routes that can sometimes save you major time when beach roads are backed up. 

What is the Best Airport Near Gulf Shores, Alabama and Orange Beach, Alabama? 

While the area is definitely more of a drive destination, travelers who want to fly in have several airport options for flying to Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, Alabama. Our family has flown into the vast majority of the airports in the region in our travels over the years, so we have a lot of experience with the options!

The best and closest airports to Gulf Shores and Orange Beach for an Alabama Gulf Coast beach trip are:

Pensacola International Airport (PNS)

The closest commercial airport for flying to Gulf Shores or Orange Beach is actually just across the border in Florida. The Pensacola International Airport (PNS) is served by Southwest Airlines , Delta, American, United, Frontier , Spirit, and Silver. Flight options increase in the summer months due to seasonal schedule changes. 

The drive from PNS to the Alabama beaches is only about 35 miles but takes about 1 hour in no traffic. A car is pretty much a necessity in this region of the country, and rental cars at PNS are ample and cheap. The lines to pick up rental cars, however, can be very long at PNS during busy summer months. I highly recommend booking a skip-the-counter option if possible (tip: often you can do this simply by joining a car rental company’s frequent rental program at no cost). At the very least, send the fastest member of your traveling party to make a mad dash after deplaning to camp out in line.

Upon departure, give yourself plenty of time for bag check and security. Even though PNS is a small airport, it’s busy during peak periods. We were surprised on our most recent visit to find that Southwest Airlines had no electronic kiosks to check-in or self-tag bags. We had wait in a very, very long ticket counter line to check our bags and were grateful we arrived early.

Mobile Regional Airport (MOB)

The closest airport within the state of Alabama to the Alabama Beaches is the next county over is Mobile Regional Airport . As the name suggests, this airport is smaller than Pensacola and served by just three airlines – Delta (to Atlanta), United (to Houston), and American (to Dallas and Charlotte). The airport is located on the far west side of the city, making the drive from MOB to Gulf Shores about 1.5 hours long.

Destin/Fort Walton Beach Airport (VPS)

Another viable option in a pinch for travelers to the Alabama Gulf Coast might be the small regional airport in Destin/Ft. Walton Beach (VPS) . VPS is about a 2 hour drive to Gulf Shores, but if you can get a non-stop flight there, it would be quicker than booking a connecting flight into either PNS or MOB. VPS has service on Delta, American, Southwest, Allegiant, and Sun Country and is small and easy to navigate. I’ve used it often for trips we’ve taken to the Florida Panhandle.

More Airport Options Coming Soon?

While visitors arriving by air have to drive a bit to reach Alabama’s beaches, there are more options on the near-term horizon to watch for future trips.

Gulf Shores International

The general aviation airport in Gulf Shores just a couple of miles from the beach got a new air traffic control tower and a new name last year – Gulf Shores International . The airport authority is in talks to bring commercial service to the airport within the next two years. There are plans to construct a new passenger terminal as well.

Mobile International Airport

The Mobile Airport Authority is also in early stages of rebuilding another airport in the region, the Mobile Downtown Airport, into what is now called the Mobile International Airport (BFM) . Commercial service is due to start on Avelo Airlines in late May 2023. Eventually all commercial service in Mobile will be moved to this airport (from MOB) because of its location closer to the city center. It will also be closer to Alabama’s beach destinations at about an hour away.

Are the Alabama Beaches a Good Destination to Visit with Kids?

Yes! When it comes to family friendly, Gulf Shores and Orange Beach are about as good as it gets. Most of the accommodations were built with families in mind. Kid-friendly food and activities abound in the area. Restaurants all reliably have amenities for families like kids menus and high chairs, and no one is going to look twice at you taking kids just about anywhere in the area. The shallow water and normally calm seas of the Gulf of Mexico also make its beaches pretty safe for swimming as well.

That’s not to say there isn’t a scene, however, for other kinds of travelers. The area is increasingly popular for girlfriend getaways and golf trips. And there’s enough of a party and bar scene that spring breakers and 20 somethings can find something that works for them too. But family-friendly is definitely the dominant vibe.

Where to Stay on the Alabama Gulf Coast

For travelers used to beach vacation destinations in many other places, the lodging situation on the Alabama Gulf Coast might appear a bit strange at first glance. The vast majority of the accommodations available in the area are condos for rent from individual owners — not hotels. There is a fair mix of standalone beach homes available for rent as well.

For families, having a condo or a house with kitchen, laundry, living area, and multiple bedrooms is probably just what you want. Most travelers come and stay for a week, making these kinds of accommodations even more useful. But if you want a full service luxury hotel or resort vacation experience like you might be used to in a beach destination like Hawaii, the pickings are a bit slim.

You can certainly do an Alabama Beaches vacation on the very cheap by staying in a hotel that isn’t directly on the water. And when you want to get to the water, there are public beaches with 15 access points. But if budget allows it, I highly recommend lodging with a water view and direct beach access. There are literally hundreds of choices.

Best Condo Complexes on the Alabama Gulf Coast

Many of these condominium complexes are managed by the major realty companies in the area – Kaiser, Spectrum Resorts, Brett-Robinson, and many others. If you rent directly from the management company, you’ll sometimes pay a higher price but also get some amenities that you will miss out on if you rent direct from an owner (club access, beach umbrella rental rights, fitness centers, etc.). It is vital to read the fine print to find out what amenities you need and what you might be passing up depending on the method you choose for rental.

A lot of the management companies advertise or rent on sites like VRBO, Airbnb, and Vacasa, so it’s easiest to start there to compare all the options and locations. Check out VRBO rentals in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach to see the array of choices.

Most of these condo complexes are pretty indistinguishable from one another, with similar amenities and layouts. While most are beachside, there are quite a few resorts that are on the bay side which may or may not be what you want. Look at maps carefully!

From my experience, the nicest of all the condo choices is Turquoise Place , a newer high rise in Orange Beach managed by Spectrum Resorts. Each unit has a hot tub on the balcony and accommodations from 3 to 5 bedrooms are available. Spectrum also manages The Beach Club in Gulf Shores.

Another name you will see often is Phoenix – there are over a dozen condo complexes by this name in the region. Each Phoenix complex has a slightly different mix of pools and amenities.

Our family stayed in a complex called Summer House on Romar Beach on our last trip which is a mid-range option in Orange Beach. 

Best Hotels in Gulf Shores & Orange Beach

If you prefer a hotel, the most luxurious in the area is The Lodge at Gulf State Park, a Hilton Hotel . The property is built to blend in with the pristine natural surroundings of the state park that divides Gulf Shores from Orange Beach. A number of the room types have bunk beds in addition to a king, making them ideal for families.

Two other more moderately priced hotel choices that punch well above their weight are the Hampton Inn & Suites Orange Beach/Gulf Front and the Best Western Premier, The Tides .

Things to Do in Orange Beach & Gulf Shores

While I highly recommend spending a lot of lazy time at the beach and by the pool, there are so many activities in and around Gulf Shores and Orange Beach. While we were in the area for a whole week on our last vacation, there were quite a few activities we could not find time to fit in. Figure out your top 3 before you go, because you may run out of time once you discover how gorgeous the beaches are and how much time you will want to spend there.

Here are the activity highlights that I’d recommend to other Alabama Beaches visitors, particularly families.

Lulu’s (Gulf Shores)

Lulu’s Gulf Shores is both a place to eat and a place to play. This enormous outdoor restaurant founded by Jimmy Buffett’s sister has amazing seafood, cocktails, and live music, but also features an arcade and ropes course that is a must-do for kids. Expect very long lines for dinner in the summer – we found lunch time was much easier to find a table.

Tropic Falls Theme Park at OWA (Foley)

Tropic Falls at OWA is now a full sized amusement park and giant indoor water park in one. The amusement parks offering 23 rides, from roller coasters to kiddie classics. And the indoor water park comes in handier than you might imagine because it means it can operate in winter as well as on rainy summer days (heads up: thunderstorms are common in the region!).

There are a number of ticket options to make a day out affordable as well. Theme park only access is just $26.99 per person. Combination tickets with the water park included are $63 per person. Family four packs save more, as do two day ticket options or season passes. There is an adjacent shopping and dining district as well with an arcade, theater, restaurants, stores, and more.

The Track (Gulf Shores)

The Track is another giant entertainment complex perfect for a day out with the family. It features multiple go-cart tracks, a large arcade, bumper boats, and amusement park rides for younger kids. Buy points online in advance to save money and share among a larger group.

Adventure Island (Orange Beach)

Similar to the Track, Adventure Island is another family-friendly entertainment complex on the Orange Beach side of town. It’s an OG attraction in the area – having opened when I was a kid! Adventure Island has mini golf (practically a requirement at the beach), bumper boats, go-carts, and a couple of smaller attractions. Just be sure to watch out for erupting volcanoes if you visit.

Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo (Gulf Shores)

The Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo – better known as “The Little Zoo that Could” – is just a few minutes off the beach. The zoo has a new larger location as of 2020 and packs a pretty big punch. It’s home to 300 animals, including 22 endangered species from a Bengal tiger to lemurs.

Pirates & Princesses Breakfast at the Hangout (Gulf Shores)

The Hangout is a huge open air restaurant, bar, and entertainment complex in the dead center of Gulf Shores. Most mornings in summer, the restaurant offers a character breakfast featuring pirates and princesses that is perfect for families. Portions are hearty and the prices are ridiculously cheap ($19.99 for adults, $8.99 for kids 6-10, free for kids 5 & under).

The Wharf (Orange Beach)

The Wharf is a shopping, dining, and entertainment district on the bay side of Orange Beach. There’s a ferris wheel, train, arcade, movie theater, evening laser light show, and marina on site, so there is plenty to take your pick from depending on your interests, time of day, and the weather.

The Yard (Gulf Shores)

After a hot day on the beach, take the whole family to The Yard for an enormous milkshake treat. The shakes here are pricey, but come complete with decadent toppings like a whole cupcake or brownie. I highly recommend sharing.

Flora-Bama (Perdido Key, FL)

Just straddling the state line is perhaps the most famous dive bar in America. But with multiple restaurants and shops, the Flora-Bama is now a destination unto itself. Country greats like Kenny Chesney play here regularly. Believe it or not, kids are also welcome in much of the complex. You can even attend church here on Sunday mornings.

More Tips & Tricks for First Time Visitors to Gulf Shores & Orange Beach

• Eat Out Early : The food in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach is amazing all around, but top restaurants are very, very popular. If you arrive at peak dinner hour, you can often expect waits of 1-2 hours or more. If you want to beat the crowds, plan to eat very early – arriving at 5 or 5:30pm is pretty necessary. If you have a large group, consider restaurants that will take advance reservations or even book a private room. 
• Consider the Off-Season : As much as I love taking a dip in the ocean or pool during the heat of Alabama summer, there are a few down sides to going to Gulf Shores and Orange Beach in June, July, and August. First, if you are doing anything other than spending time by or in the water in a bathing suit, it’s really, really hot. And humid! Second, it can be very crowded during the peak summer months. So, definitely consider the area other times of year, especially in shoulder season. Just be aware that hurricanes last well into the fall too. And while it’s too cold (for me, at least) to swim from about November to February, the area is particularly peaceful in winter.
• Get a Discount : As you might find in a lot of beach destinations, activities in the area can be expensive. But it’s so easy to find a discount for a number of the things you might want to do in Orange Beach and Gulf Shores. While plenty of specials are posted on company websites and sites like Yelp, you’ll often find the best deals by picking up the old-fashioned flyers in hotel lobbies advertising area attractions. Low tech coupons still abound there!
• Have a Plan for Groceries : With most of the lodging in the area being condos and home rentals, almost everyone has a kitchen. And that means everyone needs to stock it! Grocery stores and superstores can be a madhouse on Saturday afternoon when new guests arrive. Consider going to a smaller, more off-the-beaten path store to dodge some of the craziness. We found the Publix in Orange Beach to be a tad pricier, but well worth the markup for the shorter lines and less hectic atmosphere. There are also curbside pickup or delivery options that might save you time and stress. It’s possible to order Instacart at Publix or do curbside pickups at both area Walmart locations. Concierge services like the Beach Moms also will do grocery runs for you.

I'm afraid I am going to be a grouch. As someone who grew up in Mobile in the 1940s and 1950s I was appalled when I visited the Gulf area 5 years ago. We could spend the whole day at the beach and only see the people we came with!! How relaxing and enjoyable.

As snow birds that have visited Gulf Shores 3 winters and are returning for a fourth, I appreciated your overview. I would highly recommend the Coastal Birding Trail, if that is where your interest lies. I loved exploring the larger area of Baldwin County while hoping for a glimpse of birds. We have more time than a week to explore, but the first 10 or so are easy to get to and fun spots even without spotting a bird ( but more than likely that you will) The pier (at the state park, I believe) is an awesome place to visit.

11 Best Beach Towns in Alabama Worth Visiting

If you’re looking for a sunny getaway, go no further than the Alabama Gulf Shores.

It’s a famed tourist getaway because of the fine white sands and near-perfect weather that can be enjoyed for most of the year.

There’s also a family-friendly vibe and plenty of wildlife to admire.

Alabama’s beaches are competitive with those of Florida, a state with which it often competes for tourists.

The sugar-white sand is its main draw.

The sand’s fine granules provide a soothing massage for your feet. 

It’s comfortable to take strolls along the shore or lay down a towel to finally finish that novel you’ve been meaning to dive into.

Best Beach Towns in Alabama 

Gulf shores .

Both visitors and long-time residents of Gulf Shores flock to the town’s main public beach to enjoy the water and the lively atmosphere. 

I can personally attest to it being one of the best Alabama beaches — and even one of the best I’ve ever visited in the world.

Before the sun worshippers arrive, take a stroll on the soft beach at sunrise to see the fishermen and local wildlife enjoying the ebbing and flowing of the tide.

There are now more ramps, walkways, green areas, wheelchair-accessible mats, changing rooms, and a theater near the beach, all thanks to a massive redevelopment effort. 

The beach is well maintained, and it serves as the starting point for several water-based activities, such as scuba diving , parasailing and dolphin-watching tours .

Don’t forget to walk along the Gulf State Park Pier and keep an eye out for pelicans as they compete with the local fishermen for fish. 

If you’re visiting the area for the first time, this area is fantastic, thanks to its convenient location and plenty of guest facilities. 

Alabama’s beaches are great for eco-tourists since local communities are dedicated to encouraging responsible tourism and keeping the beaches clean. 

The Leave Only Footprints initiative in Gulf Shores prohibits visitors from bringing glass containers to the beaches in an effort to preserve the area’s unique ecosystems that draw people there in the first place. 

Rather than staying in a hotel, you could reserve one of the local condo rentals and enjoy the conveniences of a home after a day at the beach.

The best way to find a local rental is to check out VRBO.

They’ll keep you close to the water and a number of popular eateries and attractions.

Orange Beach 

Its eight miles of white, sugary shoreline have made Orange Beach a popular vacation spot for families.

Here, visitors of all ages can relax and bask in the sun. 

The abundant sea and land-based recreational opportunities, as well as the numerous tourist amenities, are the beach’s primary draws.

Sporting events and activities in Orange Beach include sailing and scuba diving at the first purposely sunk ship wreckage in Alabama.

Recreational fishing is also very popular in these parts.

The waters off Orange Beach are teeming with fish, including marlin, tuna, and red snapper. You could even try surf fishing!

There are plenty of Activities in Orange Beach.

Kids and their parents will love the adjacent Adventure Island Amusement Park and Arcade.

Here, you can make sun-filled memories with those you love. 

Dauphin Island 

Dauphin Island’s public beach offers a refreshing change of pace from the liveliness of Gulf Shores and Orange Beach. 

The island stretches for 14 miles into the calm waves of the ocean.

Dauphin Island is actually my favorite beach in the entire Alabama region.

But I like to keep it a secret, well, except for this article, apparently 😂

Family hangouts ( with pets! ) are welcome on this beach.

The island is home to Fort Gaines, a fort from the nineteenth century that still has its original cannons.

It can be visited in tandem with a swim for the educationally inclined. 

Rentals of bikes and kayaks are available, and there are a number of hiking trails in the area.

When traveling from Gulf Shores or Orange Beach, take the Mobile Bay Ferry from Fort Morgan to Dauphin Island.

Of course, trip schedules are dependent on the weather.  

If you’d rather drive, go south from Mobile to reach the island bridge that will take you to Dauphin Island.

Staying in Mobile or at a Gulf Shores resort will put you in the greatest position to maximize what this area offers.

I think it’s clear why it’s one of the best Alabama beaches.

Fort Morgan 

The little, charming Fort Morgan peninsula is home to one of Alabama’s most exceptional beaches. 

The historic fort, which served as a military outpost during the Civil War and other conflicts, is surrounded by a sandy beach. 

It is about 20 miles from the heart of Gulf Shores, but the peaceful atmosphere and beautiful scenery make the trip worthwhile.

You can visit Fort Morgan Beach if you pay the admission fee to the fort.

It is not technically a public beach.

The tranquil beach is a welcome change from the more crowded public beaches.

Going here can be a fun way to spend a day, with the added bonus of taking in the sights and relaxing by the ocean.

There are many different kinds of birds and other wildlife to see because a large portion of the land is protected as the Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge. 

Condo and beach house rentals are available with full kitchens, and two public beach access sites are available for day trips.

Romar 

Romar Beach is one of the lesser-known but most breathtaking beaches in Gulf State Park.

Just a few miles east of Highway 59, it is a picturesque spot perfect for an active day at the beach or a leisurely picnic. 

Some resorts and condos have been built in the area, but it is largely undeveloped, which is why there aren’t many amenities here. 

The beach’s modest size is a plus point for many visitors.

Be advised that parking is limited, so plan your trip to this beach accordingly if you don’t have a condo nearby to park in.

Fairhope 

Fairhope Beach, situated right off Mobile Bay, is a must-visit for those in search of a bustling beach scene and additional activities beyond lounging by the water’s edge.

As a whole, Fairhope, Alabama, and its beach are quite tranquil places to spend time in. 

Fairhope Beach is a great area to go swimming because the waves are exceptionally gentle.

Numerous picnic areas provide welcome relief from the midday sun.

Park visitors who want to access the beach, shops, gardens, and the Fairhope Pier might have to pay an admission fee. 

Many of Fairhope’s shops and restaurants are conveniently located on the town’s charming main street, making it ideal for strolling. 

Plenty of hiking routes are nearby if you don’t want to spend all day at the beach.

There are plenty of other things to do in Fairhope . My wife and I like to take day trips over from our hometown of Mobile.

Cotton Bayou 

Cotton Bayou is a little beach strip sandwiched between two boardwalks, two freeways, and high-rise apartments. 

The sand at this secluded spot is as white as it is at more popular public beaches in Orange Beach, but there are far fewer people here.

There are several places to eat close to the shore, and you can also spend time sprawled out on the sand. 

There are showers and bathrooms available, making this beach quite practical.

There is a fee for parking here. 

Cotton Bayou Beach is a beautiful spot because of its proximity to two historic cities in Alabama.

The magnificent scenery provides ample space for any activity, whether you’d want to surf, fish, or just relax and frolic.

Robinson Island 

Robinson Island is a popular destination for swimmers and boaters in the region.

There are three tiny islands north of the Perdido Pass bridge, and Robinson Island is one of them. 

The residents love these islands because they are secluded and can only be reached by boat.

Bird and Walker Islands, and the surrounding area, are important nesting grounds for a variety of shorebirds. 

As such, visitors are strongly advised to restrict their activities to the beach areas.

No pets are allowed on the island, which is yet another rule that visitors must abide by.

Robinson Island is a little piece of heaven in the back bays since the ecology around it is protected. 

Beautiful natural vegetation and wildlife have been preserved by the city to add to the scenic value of the waterfront.

Take an island boat that stops at Robinson Island for a swim to get there.

Alternatively, you can take a day trip to the islands on a kayak.

Little Lagoon Pass

The public beach at Little Lagoon Pass is great for families with kids.

It is directly opposite the point where Little Lagoon meets the Gulf of Mexico. 

If you’re searching for a spot with easy access to the beach and conveniences like public parking, restrooms, and outdoor showers, this one fits the bill.

Cautious parents will appreciate the calmer, shallower waters.

Little Lagoon Pass also has a tiny public park where you may find a shady place to eat your midday meal. 

You can spend the entire day at the beach without having to move from one spot to the next because everything is quite close by. 

North Beach Park 

Perhaps Orange Beach or Gulf Shores comes to mind when you think of the prettiest beaches in Alabama.

Change things up a bit by checking out North Beach Park!  

This area in Fairhope, Alabama, is a bit more of a secret.

You can relax on the beach, use the fitness equipment, stroll the boardwalks, watch the seabirds, let your child play with the sand diggers, or have a picnic in the shade of the beach pavilion. 

There is a paved walking track around the park, as well as a duck pond and pier with views of Mobile Bay. 

Those who like to keep moving may appreciate the Beach Park Tree Trail.

Nearly 500 different kinds of trees can be found throughout the trail. 

The park welcomes leashed canine visitors, attracts photographers with its picturesque setting, and is ideal for families with young children, thanks to its playgrounds.

Pineywood Island 

Many of Alabama’s finest shores can be found on Pineywood Island.

This island can be found in Tallapoosa County’s Lake Martin. 

It’s a lake, we know, thanks. 😏

Watercraft are the only means of access to the island.

This area offers several entertaining activities, such as renting a pontoon boat or paddling out to the island.

One of Alabama’s cleanest beaches can be found on this tiny island.

When you get to the island, you can relax on a hammock, set up some chairs, play some outdoor games, have a picnic, and much more.

You can adopt a sea turtle nest.

At least 50,000 critically endangered loggerheads, kemps ridley, and green sea turtles have hatched on the Gulf Coast of Alabama since 2003. 

Mother turtles typically nest on the same beaches year after year during the summer.

From May through October, volunteers in Alabama patrol over 50 miles of nesting habitat to protect sea turtle eggs from natural and human-caused dangers.

Touring Mobile Bay is a common activity for vacationers staying in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach.

The latter is the oldest US submarine open to the public and is credited with sinking 15 Japanese ships.

Last July, when my best friend and I suddenly found some free time and a yearning for sun and sand, we laid out our options for a trip.

As a resident of South Carolina, I considered plenty of places to visit, from Myrtle Beach to Charleston . But in the end, we ultimately settled on Hilton Head Island.

The beautiful South Carolina town has several white-sand beaches and world-class golf courses. The area, which Condé Nast Traveler named the best island in the US in 2023 , is also known for nature and a small-town vibe.

I'd been to Hilton Head Island decades earlier but was eager to see how it had changed over the years. Here's what my experience on the island was like.

The entire area reminded me of a nature preserve.

We rented a three-bedroom, two-bathroom home with pool access and a lagoon view through Whimstay — a vacation-rental website for last-minute trips.

Our house had plenty of space for my friend and me to relax — but the real beauty of the home was the gorgeous lagoon in the backyard. I could have easily spent the rest of our getaway staring out at that water without visiting the beach.

It was so peaceful to be surrounded by beautiful greenery and trees.

I loved hearing the sound of frogs and other animals at night.

We soon learned the lagoon in our backyard was bristling with wildlife , including all kinds of birds, different-sized turtles, and a wide variety of frogs.

When nighttime came, the frogs surrounding our house piped up with quite the chorus. It almost seemed like we were camping — but without the hassle of sleeping outside.

When it got dark, I cracked open the sliding-glass doors connecting the main bedroom to the spacious back deck so I could do some stargazing — Hilton Head Island, known for its low light pollution , was the perfect place for this activity.

Sea Pines Beach was beautiful, clean, and easy to get to.

One Saturday during our trip, my friend and I left our car at a shopping center and boarded a trolley to Sea Pines Beach Club , where we reserved chairs from Shore Beach Services.

Our first day at the beach was fairly quiet — I assume this was because it was changeover day for most of the rental properties.

Still, it was a diverse crowd, with families, singles, couples, and people of all ages splayed across the sand. We had plenty of room to spread out but didn't really venture from our chairs.

The next day brought more folks out to the beach . But even with more people around, the beach didn't feel too crowded — there was a completely relaxed vibe.

The wide array of food was unmatched, too.

Everything we ate on the island was enjoyable, from the delicious first-night, too-tired-to-go-out pizza from Giuseppi's to the pre-beach pastries and fresh-squeezed juice we grabbed at the Harbour Town Bakery and Café.

However, my meal at Chez Georges Bistro and Bar blew my taste buds away. Known for its "French cuisine with a Lowcountry accent," this family-owned and -operated restaurant has a traditional French-bistro menu without any kind of intimidating vibe.

When we walked in, we were greeted as if we were regulars. The menu was packed with classically French cuisine , from escargot and bouillabaisse to cassoulet.

I was thrilled to see moules frites (mussels with fries) on the menu. I opted for the classic Provençal preparation, with white-wine-butter sauce, tomatoes, capers, olives, and herbs de Provence. The dish did not disappoint, and I used the fries to mop up every last drop of sauce.

We also ordered steak frites, and my friend tried the boeuf Bourguignon (short ribs), which were fall-off-the-bone tender.

Hilton Head was a great spot for a last-minute vacation, and I'd recommend it to anyone.

When I first experienced Hilton Head Island decades ago, I perceived it as kind of stuffy. Later, I dismissed it as just a place for golfers and bachelor parties.

But on my most recent, last-minute vacation, Hilton Head Island proved to be the perfect low-key vacation retreat for everyone — beachgoers, nature enthusiasts, and food lovers alike.

From the beaches to the delicious restaurant scene, I had a great time. I'd recommend this island to anyone in need of a beach getaway.
