With nearly 7,000 kilometres of coastline, a road trip along the Queensland coast boasts stunning beaches, islands and jaw-dropping scenery.

As the second-largest state in Australia, the best way to explore Queensland is on a road trip. 

From spectacular beaches to hidden waterfalls and tropical islands, there is so much to see during a road trip through Queensland. 

If you’re planning a trip to Queensland any time soon, you must make this 14-day road trip throughout the state. This road trip will involve you hiring a rental car or motorhome.

Day 1: Brisbane to Maroochydore 

Start your road trip in the capital of Queensland, Brisbane. Pick up your rental car or motorhome hire and head north to the Sunshine Coast. 

The distance from Brisbane to Maroochydore is 103km and takes 90 minutes. Along the way, you’ll drive past the Glass House Mountains, a spectacular sight to see. 

What to do and see in Maroochydore? 

Leave Brisbane early enough to have at least one full day in Maroochydore because there is quite a bit to do! 

Once you arrive in Maroochydore and check in to your accommodation, head straight to the beach for a swim! You can swim at Maroochydore Beach, Alexandra Headlands, or Mooloolaba, as they’re all close together. 

After you’ve cooled off, grab some lunch before your next activity. 

Once you’ve had lunch, put on your walking shoes and tackle the Sunshine Coast Scenic Walk. This coastal pathway stretches 4.4km from Cotton Tree Park in Maroochydore to the Esplanade in Mooloolaba. As you walk along the path, you’ll be greeted by stunning views of the beach and ocean beyond.

Head somewhere nice for dinner and enjoy a good night’s sleep before getting up early to head to your next destination.

Day 2: Maroochydore to Noosa

The drive from Maroochydore to Noosa is 46 km and will take around 40 minutes. 

Get up early to drive to Noosa to ensure you can enjoy a full day exploring the outdoors. 

What to do and see in Noosa?

After you’ve checked into your accommodation (or caravan park), head straight to Noosa Main Beach. The ocean at this beach is calm due to its being protected by the headland, making it the perfect place to swim. 

Once you’ve spent a couple of hours swimming in the ocean and relaxing on the sand, head to one of the restaurants along the main strip for some lunch. 

Afterwards, head back to the beach, but instead of going onto the sand, head to Noosa National Park on the northern end for a spectacular walk to a hidden gem. 

The path in Noosa National Park wraps around the headland, meaning you’re walking right on the coastline the entire time! With plenty of secluded beaches along the way, you can stop off for a swim on a beach you’ve got entirely to yourself! 

You can walk all the way to Hell’s Gate before turning back, or you can continue until you reach Alexandria Bay. Just remember that you will have to walk back, too!

Day 3: Noosa to K’gari (Fraser Island)

Today you will leave Noosa very early to head to the largest sand island in the world. 

Located off the coast of Hervey Bay, K’gari (Fraser Island), at 120km in length, K’gari is the largest sand island in the world and one of the most beautiful places in Queensland.

The drive from Noosa to Hervey Bay (where you can get to K’gari) is 158 km and will take two hours. There is an island on the resort where you can stay. However, it’s best if you have a 4WD so you can travel around the island and even camp if you want to!

Some of the best things to do on K’gari (Fraser Island), which you can do on your first day with your 4WD, include 

• Swimming in Lake McKenzie – a freshwater lake surrounded by some of the whitest sand you’ll ever see.
• Drive along 75 Mile Beach.
• Explore the Maheno Shipwreck – located on 75 Mile Beach, this shipwreck has been on the island since 1935 and is a must-see.

During your one day in Yeppoon, you can do two different activities: heading to Great Keppel Island or relaxing on the beach or lagoon.

If you are tired from exploring and driving, Yeppoon Lagoon is a great place to spend the day as it’s a public pool right on the beach, offering stunning views. 

However, a day trip to Great Keppel Island is a must if you’re up for it. As one of the 27 islands off the coast of Yeppoon, Great Keppel Island is one of the most popular because of its untouched beauty. 

Head to the island on the Freedom Fast Cat and spend your day exploring secluded beaches, snorkelling on the reef and swimming with turtles and dolphins. However, if you choose to spend your time on Great Keppel Island, you won’t be disappointed.

Since you will arrive around midday or after, spend your first day in Airlie Beach just relaxing after a long drive. 

The following two days will be spent on the Great Barrier Reef and Whitsunday Islands! 

However, if you’re eager to get out and explore the town, Airlie Beach lagoon is a great place to cool off and enjoy the sunshine.

Magnetic Island is a tropical island located 20 minutes off the coast of Townsville. Home to 23 bays and beaches, fringing reefs and beautiful wildlife, it’s a must-visit in Queensland. 

What to do and see on Magnetic Island?

When you get to Magnetic Island in the afternoon, check into your accommodation and head to Alma Bay for a swim. With incredibly calm, blue water Alma Bay is the perfect spot for swimming. 

In the evening, head to Picnic Bay to watch the sunset and grab dinner at one of the restaurants lining the beach.

Today you will be driving along the Waterfall Circuit to see some of the most beautiful waterfalls in the state. 

The Waterfall Circuit is 100km one way (you can do it on the way to Atherton Tablelands), where you can see the stunning waterfalls of Millaa Millaa Falls, Zillie Falls, Ellinjaa Falls and more. 

You will stay in Yungaburra for the night before making your final journey to Cairns.

Pack for warm weather – expect warm summers and mild winters in Queensland, with majority sunny days. The state is subtropical in the south, and tropical up north – it’s the latter that experiences a defined wet season through summer, that’s humid and hot, with a slightly cooler dry season through winter. When it comes to what to wear, casual, lightweight clothes are reliable. Temperatures can drop in the southern part of the state, where a jacket or sweatshirt may also be required. Access at our stations

Please visit the  Your Station  page for information on each of our stations, including station accessibility maps. The level of access at each station varies across our network. 

Some stations across Queensland Rail’s South East Queensland (SEQ) network present a significant vertical step and horizontal gap between the platform and the train carriage entrance. For customers requiring assistance to board or disembark the train we encourage you to use the assisted boarding point on the platform so that our staff can deploy a ramp to help you board and disembark the train.

This point is indicated by the international symbol for access, a white wheelchair on a blue background, and is located near the middle section of the platform. At many stations, it will be located on a higher section of the platform to allow for easier access to and from the carriage.

The assisted boarding point is also usually close to other access features, such as the help phone, hearing aid loops, audio and visual timetable information, and lifts.

When the train arrives at the station, let the guard or station customer service staff know your destination and they can deploy the portable boarding ramp (available for use by any customer who requests it) or provide any other assistance you may require.

To safely use the ramp using a mobility aid, your mobility aid should not exceed 750mm wide by 1300mm long, and the combined weight of you, your mobility aid, and any carried items should not exceed 300kg.

Through our  Station Accessibility Upgrade Program , we continue to upgrade our facilities and services to progress toward achieving our vision of providing an accessible, world-class rail network for our customers.

To assist customers with disabilities and customers who are older adults, pregnant, or traveling with young children, priority seating is located near the carriage doors for easy access. On many trains, the priority seating is indicated by blue and white signs with raised text, pictograms, and Braille.

There are also allocated spaces for people who use a mobility aid on each of our SEQ services in the middle of the train, in line with the assisted boarding point. All Queensland Rail trains are also fitted with emergency and disability assistance intercoms (no penalty applies for use). 

These intercoms are usually located to the side of a carriage door but may also be located near the allocated spaces for people who use mobility aids.

Many trains SEQ provide one onboard unisex accessible toilet which vary between the New Generation Rollingstock (NGR) trains and our older trains.

In a typical six-car older train, depending on how the train is coupled, the toilets can be found at the end of the first, third, fourth or sixth car. Signage is present on the external doors of the car which indicates the location of the toilet within the train. Signage is also present on the inside of the car to indicate the direction of the toilet within the train. 

In a single three-car older train the one toilet will be in either the first or last car dependent on the direction of travel. 

On request station staff and train crew can let you know whether there is a toilet onboard and if so, which car it is located in.​​

The toilet modules feature:

• baby change table
• hand wash basin
• soap dispenser
• two emergency help points.

All NGR six-car trains currently provide one onboard unisex accessible toilet. The toilet is located in either the third or fourth car, depending on the direction of travel.

Signage on the external doors of the car indicates the location of the toilet within the train. Signage on the inside of the cars indicates the direction of the toilet within the train.

On request station staff and train crew providing boarding assistance for NGR services can let you know in which car the toilet is located.

Each NGR toilet module currently features:

• two emergency help points

The Queensland Government is working with the disability sector to improve the accessibility of the NGR trains (including the existing toilet modules) to make them accessible for customers with disabilities.

The NGR accessibility upgrades include the addition of a second toilet on all 75 NGR six-car sets, increasing the size of toilet modules by 10%, and installing improvements for customers with disabilities.

By sending an  SMS to 0428 774 636 , you can contact a Queensland Rail Customer Communications Officer to obtain train and platform assistance, and information on station accessibility, lift outages, and timetables.

We recommend customers plan each journey ahead using the Translink Journey Planner , opens in a new window . The Journey Planner includes live information on any potential disruptions which may impact your journey on our SEQ network such as delays on your line, track work and lift outages at our stations.

Translink has also developed the MyTranslink app which provides live information on Queensland Rail services as well as Translink bus, ferry and tram services. Queensland Rail's SEQ services provide easy access to Queensland Rail Travel's long-distance network via platform 10 at Roma Street station. Companions, carers or support workers

Companions travel for free on Queensland Rail SEQ services if the person with a disability has a Companion Card issued by any Australian State or Territory. The cardholder must have a valid ticket for travel.

Travelling with a guide, hearing or assistance animal​

A certified guide, hearing, or assistance dog, following completion of the Public Access Test, Certification, and Handler Identity Card Form , opens in a new window , by an approved trainer/training institution, can travel with you, as an approved handler.
