Top Range Travel Pillow: Tempur Review

Even when I’m not travelling I keep a travel pillow in the boot of my car for unscheduled meditation or nana nap stops! A travel or neck pillow’s one of my top five travel essentials . They make you so much more comfortable on long haul flights and can also help you rest or sleep on trains, bus trips or the airport shuttle.

I’ve tried both a small pillow which squishes itself into a bag and is easy to carry and light weight as well as the traditional U-shaped neck pillow which seem to be more popular.

Advantages of neck pillows

  • Make sleeping sitting upright WAY more comfy, helping you avoid the horrors of a sleepless night and get some reasonable rest;
  • Keep your head upright which makes breathing easier and reduces neck pain and stiffness;
  • Can be worn around the neck when you’re walking round the airport.

Disadvantages of neck pillows

  • Large and bulky, can be hard to fit in your  bag.

What’s so special about the Tempur Neck Pillow

  • Tempur is a special type of memory foam which was created as a pressure absorbing material to cushion and support astronauts during the strain of lift-off. Seriously!
  • Only a handful of top Tempur scientists know the proprietary formula that has made the Tempur material recognised by NASA and certified by the Space Foundation.
  • Tempur is a temperature sensitive, visco-elastic material, which forms to the shape of your body to provide comfortable support with minimum counter pressure.
  • Tempur products are only made in Denmark or the United States.
  • Tempur is constantly seeking new innovations to deliver the best sleep possible.
  • Tempur pillows have an open cell structure, resulting in billions of supporting points that reduce pressure on your head and neck.
  • The Tempur material responds to your head’s weight and warmth, conforming to your shape.
  • Unlike an ordinary memory foam or bead neck pillow, a Tempur pillow returns to its original shape night after night.
  • Tempur neck pillows give the best support possible to relieve discomfort for head, neck and shoulders.

Advantages of the Tempur neck pillow

I was send a Tempur neck pillow for review purposes and have given in a good test. Here’s an unbiased review:

  • I love how it comes in a removable, washable case;
  • It really is super comfy – far comfier than both my other travel pillows;
  • It does squash down a bit to help you get it in your  bag;
  • It looks and feels high quality.

Disadvantages of the Tempur neck pillow

  • It’s large and heavy with no carry bag and no way to easily be clipped onto or attached to the outside of a bag.
  • It only comes in one color – business-like gray which is fine for business travel but not so good for style conscious travellers and holiday makers who want something more fun.
  • Cost – a Tempur neck pillow costs AU$210 (approximately US$150 or £120)

Review summary

A good travel neck pillow can help you avoid a sleepless journey and help you arrive feeling rested and painfree. It’s worth spending money on a good one and Tempur is undoubtedly the Rolls Royce of travel pillows.

Tempur-Pedic Tempur-Cloud Pillow Review

  • How Much Does It Cost?

Tempur-Pedic Overview

The Tempur-Pedic Tempur-Cloud Pillow ties at No. 8 in our Best Pillows of 2024 rating. According to Tempur-Pedic, The Tempur-Cloud is the most popular pillow in the brand’s lineup.

In this Tempur-Pedic pillow review, we’ll discuss the pros and cons of the Tempur-Cloud Pillow and how it compares to other pillows in our rating.

Sleepers who like firm pillows

Those who prefer an adjustable pillow

#8 in Best Pillows of 2024 (tie)

The Tempur-Pedic Tempur-Cloud Pillow is an extra-soft pillow that’s designed for back and stomach sleepers. It uses a single piece of Tempur material, which is a proprietary memory foam manufactured by the brand.

Professional reviewers say the foam does compress slightly, but its dense composition allows it to push back against the weight of your head without elevating your neck too much. This prevents excess sinkage and allows it to properly support your neck in various sleep positions. While the pillow is designed for back and stomach sleepers, it’s 5 inches thick, so professional reviewers say it can work for some side sleepers , too.

Since the Tempur-Cloud Pillow consists of only one piece of soft foam, it’s not adjustable, meaning you can’t mold its shape or change the loft in any way. That being said, it’s designed to adapt to different positions and shapes, so it can work for a variety of people.

The pillow itself isn’t washable, but the foam comes wrapped in a 100% polyester knit cover that’s hypoallergenic, removable, and machine-washable . The pillow is backed by a five-year warranty.

How Much Does the Tempur-Pedic Tempur-Cloud Pillow Cost?

The Tempur-Pedic Tempur-Cloud Pillow costs $89.00 in a standard size. There are no queen- or king-size versions available, though the standard-size model does fit into a queen-size pillowcase. Each Tempur-Pedic pillow comes with free two-day shipping, which means you won’t be surprised by extra costs at checkout.

Tempur-Pedic often runs specials where you can save on the total retail price if you buy two of the company’s pillows. You may also score a discount on the pillow if you purchase it with a sheet set or a mattress . During certain times of the year, Tempur-Pedic also offers gift bundles that include pillows for free with certain mattress purchases.

What Is the Tempur-Pedic Tempur-Cloud Pillow Made Of?

The Tempur-Pedic Tempur-Cloud Pillow is made from the brand’s proprietary Tempur material, which is CertiPUR-US certified. This certification means that it’s made without harmful chemicals or volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

Tempur-Pedic says that this material has an open-cell structure that’s designed to adapt to both your shape and body temperature as needed since it’s your body heat that softens the pillow and allows it to conform to your body.

The Tempur-Cloud isn’t a layered or adjustable pillow. Instead, it’s one piece of foam that’s 5 inches thick. The Tempur material featured in this pillow is extra soft, according to the brand. The foam layer is protected by a zippered, 100% polyester knit cover that’s removable for easy cleaning.

The Tempur-Cloud Pillow, which has a cushion-soft feel, is the most popular, according to the brand. Here’s a breakdown of some of Tempur-Pedic’s other Cloud models:

  • Tempur-Cloud Adjustable Pillow: An adjustable pillow that’s made with a shredded blend of three types of Tempur foam. This pillow has a medium-soft feel and can be ordered with an optional cooling cover for hot sleepers.
  • Tempur-Cloud Pro Pillow: This pillow is available in extra-soft, soft, and medium feels and comes in three different heights to accommodate all types of sleepers. It’s layered and comes with a removable, washable cover.
  • Tempur-Cloud Breeze Dual Cooling Pillow: Made for hot sleepers , this pillow has a foam core that’s surrounded by gel layers that help with temperature regulation. It has a medium feel and works for back, stomach, and side sleepers.

In addition to pillows, Tempur-Pedic also sells mattresses . There are three main collections – Tempur-Cloud, Tempur-Adapt, and Tempur-Breeze – with different models to choose from within those collections. You can also purchase adjustable bases, mattress toppers , bedding, and other sleep accessories like weighted blankets.

Tempur-Pedic FAQ

To buy the Tempur-Pedic Tempur-Cloud Pillow, head to the company's website or check out one of the brand’s brick-and-mortar stores across the country. Tempur-Pedic also has several locations that have a wider product selection if you’d prefer to test the pillow in person before buying.

When purchasing from the Tempur-Pedic website, pillows and bedding typically arrive in five to seven business days, while mattresses arrive in seven to 10 business days within the contiguous U.S. Orders ship for free except to those in Hawaii, Alaska, Puerto Rico, and other U.S. territories. If you live in one of the places mentioned, take note that pillows, bed linens, and other small items will incur a $25 shipping fee per order, and mattress toppers come with a $50 standard shipping fee. Tempur-Pedic doesn’t ship to P.O. boxes.

Tempur-Pedic Warranty: 5-year warranty

The Tempur-Pedic Tempur-Cloud Pillow is covered by a five-year warranty, the longest offered among the pillow companies in our ratings. If your pillow is defective, Tempur-Pedic will replace or repair it as needed. The warranty covers physical flaws like cracks, splits, and deterioration in the foam that prevents it from bouncing back to its original shape. This applies only to pillows subjected to normal use and handling. The warranty is void if you damage, burn, or cut the pillow. The cover portion is backed by a two-year warranty. If you need to use the warranty, you can file a claim through the website.

Tempur-Pedic Trial Period: N/A

Tempur-Pedic is the only brand in our pillow ratings that doesn’t offer a sleep trial. You can only return the pillow if it is damaged during shipping or if it arrives with a defect. If you purchase your pillow through an authorized retailer and not Tempur-Pedic directly, that store’s return policy applies instead.

If your pillow does arrive damaged and you wish to initiate a return, you can contact customer service through Tempur-Pedic’s site. If you need to make a warranty claim, you can also file directly through the site. You will need your original proof of purchase. It’s also a good idea to register your pillow to keep track of important details.

You can toss the Tempur-Pedic Tempur-Cloud Pillow’s removable cover into your washing machine , but don’t launder the pillow itself. To wash the cover, unzip it, remove the inner pillow, and wash it on a cold setting. Tempur-Pedic notes that air-drying the pillow cover is best.

Tempur-Pedic also recommends keeping the Tempur-Cloud Pillow fresh by giving the Tempur material a chance to breathe and absorb some fresh air. Simply take the pillow’s polyester knit cover off, and then roll and unroll the pillow a few times in each direction like you would roll up a sleeping bag.

If you're planning a trip & struggle with neck pain, you need this.

Braelyn Wood

Travel is good for the soul, but terrible for your sleep. Not only can time change wreak havoc on the body by disrupting your circadian rhythm, but a new sleep environment can come with its own set of challenges—especially if you deal with neck pain .

While there isn’t a magic solution to conquering jet lag, there is a way to make your sleep setup more supportive on the go: the Tempur-Pedic NeckPillow .

What makes this pillow unique

When you think of travel pillows, your mind likely goes to u-shaped donuts that wrap around your neck. But this Tempur-Pedic design is actually just a downsized version of the brand's Tempur-Neck Pillow .

The contoured pillow sits snuggly between your head, neck, and shoulders when lying down. The ridged edge follows the natural curvature of your cervical spine and supports a neutral position, which physical therapist  Erin Weber, P.T., DBT previously told mindbodygreen was essential for taking strain off your neck at the end of a long day.

Similar to its full-sized counterpart, the compact pillow is also made with the brand's signature Tempur-Material. It responds to body heat, which allows the material to soften and better contour to your body. Created by NASA (and perfected by Tempur-Pedic), the foam is not the greenest material around—but it does offer better temperature regulation than standard memory foam .

Just one warning: This pillow is beck for side or back sleepers as the lifted 6-inch curve may be too high for stomach sleepers.

Tempur-Pedic NeckPillow

tempurpedic neckpillow on background

What makes this travel pillow special

A contoured shape isn't the only reason this pillow is worth the investment for those with neck pain . The compact pillow is about the same size unrolled as a large agenda or coffee book, however it compresses down into a tiny travel pouch that's no larger than a 40-ounce water bottle . This means you can take your neck support with you to all corners of the world.

Personally, I've found the rolled up pillow small enough to slip into a large tote with other travel essentials. (Pro tip: Frequent travelers should invest in a carabiner hook to save space in their bag by attaching the pillow to the exterior of a backpack or roller bag.)

Plus, the pillow cover is fully removable and machine washable for an easy refresh between trips. Just be sure to let it air dry instead of tossing the cover into the dryer. Hey, it's more energy efficient anyways!

What the science says

While hundreds of customers rave about this pillow and how it's helped improve the quality of their sleep—one even called it a "game changer" for getting the best sleep wherever they go—there's actually not a ton of research behind the best pillow for neck pain.

What we do know? A  2021 systematic review 1 found moderate evidence to support a few parameters to decrease sleep-related neck pain, including a contoured pillow design, latex material, a cooling surface, and a 7 to 11 centimeter pillow height.

Although the Tempur-Pedic NeckPillow doesn't meet all these requirements, it comes pretty darn close on height and shape. More impressively, it's small enough for travel and less than $80.

The takeaway

You shouldn't have to sacrifice good sleep for travel even if you struggle with neck pain. The Tempur-Pedic NeckPillow allows you to get the cervical spine support you need no matter your location—and you can save $30 per pillow by investing in a 2-pack. This drops the final price to just $49 per pillow, which is far less than you'll spend on massage appointments upon your return. Plus, you'll get the quality sleep that is essential to your overall well-being.

Travel sleep tips – and Tempur travel pillow review

If only you could bottle sleep. There are nights I would have paid very good money for another hour… another minute.

Girl lying on a hotel bed with a hat over her face - my travel sleep tips and Tempur travel pillow review

ad/paid collaboration *

And not just when my daughter was a baby. I remember lying awake in Japan, jetlagged and almost sobbing with frustration in the knowledge I had a busy day exploring ahead.

Or long-haul flights when you just cannot get comfy with those flimsy wafer-thin pillows that the airline gives you. But as with so many thing, practice makes things better, even if not perfect.

I’ve survived countless bouts of jetlag, including my daughter’s jetlag (often worse than my own), I have curled up on flights galore in economy, and I have settled down resolutely to sleep in more strange hotel beds than I can count.

So when you’re desperately trying to sleep on your travels, this is what works for me.

Adjust asap

Whenever I get onto a plane, I change my watch for the new timezone.

Even if it makes no sense – sunlight pouring in when the clock says night, or lunch and wine being served when the time is officially breakfast, the sooner you start thinking of your ultimate time zone, the better.

At the same time, stop thinking of the ‘other’ time zone. My daughter, who has now got the concept of ‘different clocks’ around the world, kept asking what the time was back home while we were in Aruba, or what the time was in Aruba once we returned to the UK.

I flatly refused to tell her, much to her outraged disgust. But if half your brain is thinking that it’s really dawn or the middle of the night, it takes longer to adjust.

Photo of me on a plane with my Tempur Comfort Travel Pillow behind my neck and empty seats in the background - my Tempur travel pillow review

Pack a decent travel pillow

There are so many travel pillows out there – the U-shaped inflatable ones might be easy to pack but I never looked forward to snuggling down into one. The best one I’ve ever used is a Tempur Comfort travel pillow .

Sent to me for review, it’s a mini version of their classic pillow. Not cheap, but it’s more comfortable than a lot of full size pillows I’ve used (including the sadly deflated bargain versions on my bed at home, which I finally replaced after hurting my shoulder in my sleep).

Developed by NASA to cushion astronauts during lift-off, Tempur products (including the range of pillows and mattress) distribute weight and pressure.

In practice, they mould themselves to you, so if you’re squirming and shuffling around in your tiny plane seat (and even at 5 ft 3 and a bit, I wriggle constantly to try to get comfy), they adapt to the shape you need.

I’ve had mine curled around my neck, at an angle supporting bits of my shoulders, propped down my back almost as a bolster.

It’s impressively supportive, with a very soft case that’s machine washable and there’s even a three-year guarantee.

Get some sun

Or rather, find the daylight. There’s nothing quite so good for re-setting your body clock and recharging your batteries than being out in full daylight.

It won’t always work, of course. I downloaded an app called Timeshifter before our latest trip – you tell it where you’re based, where you’re headed, plus when you’re travelling and it plots out a clever timetable of when to drink or avoid caffeine, and when to avoid bright light or to seek it out.

The idea is that this will re-set your body clock all the faster.

Admittedly I fell at the first fence on my trial run, when it told me to avoid caffeine at breakfast before our nine-hour flight and then to find bright daylight in Aruba at around 10pm (there’s a certain logic to the recommendations, but given that sunset is long over, it had some practical drawbacks).

But there’s no doubt that avoiding blue light from phones before bed and flooding your tired brain with sunshine in the day is a good way to improve your sleep when travelling.

My Tempur comfort travel pillow next to a cushion saying beach - my Tempur travel pillow review and jetlag tips

Don’t sit on the hotel bed

When you’re travelling west, you often arrive when your brain thinks it’s night – but the local time is early evening.

So my failsafe is – if possible – a reviving shower, and under no circumstances to sit on the bed. Under no circumstances!

Because if you sit on that temptingly comfortable hotel bed, you’ll want to lie down. And if you lie down, you’ll want to close your eyes… just for a moment.

You can guess what comes next.

And then you inevitably wake up in the early hours, disorientated, hungry and as jetlagged as when you arrived.

Don’t. Sit. On. The. Bed.

Switch your brain off

And if you are lying awake? After years with a small girl, I feel tired enough to sleep almost anywhere… the biggest problem I have in dropping off is switching my busy brain off.

It’s almost as if I wake up at 3am and instead of going, ah you should really get back to sleep, my brain says, ‘aha, while you’re awake, let’s think about ALL THESE THINGS’.

Work, life, worries, shopping lists, things I’ve forgotten – they all crowd in.

Reading a book can help, but I’ve found another bonus to all those audio books I download for my daughter on road trips.

I discovered this on our latest trip to Aruba, when she was wide awake at 2.30am (and then 3.30am the next night).

Searching for something which would keep her quietly entertained (and thereby reduce the times she woke me up sighing VERY loudly that she’d never get back to sleep) but not be so entertaining that she wouldn’t fall asleep, I stuck on a Paddington audiobook.

We know the story well but it never fails to amuse. And while she didn’t doze back off either time, I was asleep again by the end of the first chapter. I took that as a win.

Lavender flowers at Mayfield lavender farm - the scent can help you drop off, one of my travel sleep tips

Find a scent association

There are certain scents, especially lavender, which are supposed to help you fall asleep.

Whether they do or not, there’s nothing as powerful as a scent which your brain associates with falling asleep.

It’s a tip I was given when my daughter was a baby. Drip a bit of lavender oil onto a muslin and leave it by her at bedtime and before long, the scent of lavender will trigger that automatic reaction that it’s time for sleep.

Over the years, we’ve also acquired a couple of pillow sprays which I’m happy to give suitcase room to.

One lives in my daughter’s room at home and if she’s struggling to get to sleep, she squirts a little on her pillow.

In her head, that particular smell helps her drift off to sleep. And when something works, I’m not about to argue why.

Consider melatonin

I first tried melatonin after picking some up in the US – it’s available over the counter there, unlike the UK, and the one pre-baby trip where I forgot to pack it was the Japan trip where I had the worst jetlag of my life.

A natural hormone which rises as you fall asleep, it won’t work like a sleeping pill – not something I’ve tried or fancy trying – but I find that if you’re awake, struggling to sleep but exhausted, it seems to be enough to help me doze off again and give in to that exhaustion.

It does make me feel a bit fuzzy headed the next morning, but certainly less fuzzy headed than lying awake staring at a clock in the wee small hours.

Of course you should always take advice from your doctor and check before taking any medication, natural or otherwise, and it’s not something I’ve ever given to my daughter, so it’s less useful when I travel with her.

Even if I doze happily back to sleep, a penetrating whisper of ‘mummeeeeee, I can’t sleep’ – or even her triumphant announcement towards the end of our week in Aruba that she had slept to 6.11am (still too early) can wake me from the deepest sleep.

Monks processing through the streets of Luang Prabang in Laos at dawn

Embrace the early start

I have never been a lark. I’m not even sure I’m an owl any more (more a permanently exhausted pigeon, as the Facebook meme has it).

I love to sit and watch the sunset. I can probably count the number of sunrises I’ve seen on my fingers.

Most have been while I’ve travelling – getting up early to see the monks processing for alms in the streets of Luang Prabang, or climbing St Catherine’s Mount in Egypt to see the sun rise over the Sinai desert are standout examples.

There’s nothing like travel for persuading me to do something that I’ll only do under extreme protest back home… or for jetlag in giving me a helping hand.

On a visit to Boston , having woken up very bright and early, I went out for a long walk around the city near the hotel (pre-daughter) to explore in the quiet and peace of the morning before arriving back for breakfast feeling like I’d got a head start on the day.

Make it a memorable sleep

Revel in the experience. I love my bed at home, my comfortable mattress, the sheer familiarity – no hotel, however many pillows they pile up, ever comes close.

But I don’t look back and remember a night in my bed at home as something out of the ordinary.

Unlike the night I spent in the desert in Jordan, with stars winking above the Bedouin tent where we were spending the night (I am really not a natural camper but this was something special).

Or the time I slept in a treehouse in Tahiti. Was it as luxurious as many of the South Pacific island hotels? No… But the wooden structure carved into the canopy, the bed carved into the treehouse and mosquito nets wafting around me were unforgettable.

Even our sleepover on the Golden Hinde in London . I wouldn’t call it a good night’s sleep (I wish I’d had my Tempur pillow there….) but how often do you get to time travel to the 16th century and doze off aboard a replica Tudor galleon?

My daughter still talks about the floating tents we slept in in Cambodia . Safari style tents, they’re definitely at the luxurious end of glamping, let alone camping, set in a line along the Tatai river in the Cardamom mountains.

It’s perhaps the most relaxed sleep I’ve ever had.

Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Cloud Pillow Review

Tempur-Pedic is one of the most popular and well-known memory foam mattress brands in the world. You’re probably familiar with the company, even if you don’t spend most of your waking hours thinking about sleep (like I do). But instead of Tempur-Pedic mattresses , today we’ll be taking a look at the most popular Tempur-Pedic pillow , the TEMPUR-Cloud.

Short on time? Skip to the end for a review summary ! Otherwise, let’s dig into the TEMPUR-Cloud pillow and find out if it could be your new pillow .

TEMPUR-Cloud Pillow

TEMPUR-Cloud Pillow

The TEMPUR-Cloud is a super adaptive memory foam pillow that can work for every sleeping position.

Video review: tempur-cloud pillow.

Is TEMPUR-Cloud a Good Pillow for You?

Everyone has different needs from their pillow, depending on sleep position , temperature, and even body size. So here’s who I think should try the TEMPUR-Cloud and who shouldn’t. For more, check out our list of the best pillows for more options.

tempur cloud pillow 2

Who should try the TEMPUR-Cloud pillow

  • The TEMPUR-Cloud is a great pillow for back sleepers . It offers the right level of support and contouring to keep back sleepers comfy.
  • Memory foam lovers will rejoice at the soft, conforming , slow-moving feel of TEMPUR Material foam.
  • Those who love easy cleaning will appreciate the TEMPUR-Cloud’s washable cover .

Who should not try the TEMPUR-Cloud pillow

  • Hot sleepers might find the TEMPUR-Cloud too toasty for their taste. The foam adapts around your head and neck by absorbing your body heat, so this pillow will naturally trap heat.
  • If you’re looking for an ultra- soft pillow , which is what Tempur-Pedic advertises the TEMPUR-Cloud as, you may want to consider another pillow. I found the TEMPUR-Cloud to have more of a medium firmness than ultra-soft .
  • Additionally, if you want a king size or other non-standard size, the TEMPUR-Cloud may not be the best choice, as it only comes in one standard size.

What Does the TEMPUR-Cloud Pillow Feel Like?

I tested the TEMPUR-Cloud pillow to give you an idea of how it feels. Keep in mind that feel is subjective, so you may have a slightly different experience.

TEMPUR-Cloud Pillow Firmness

First, let’s talk about firmness. Each sleeping position does best with a different firmness: side sleepers with a firm feel, back sleepers with a medium feel, and stomach sleepers with a soft feel .

Overall, I thought the TEMPUR-Cloud had a medium firmness . When I first laid on it, I could immediately tell it had that classic “Tempur-Pedic feel.” The foam is super slow-moving and adaptive. The longer you lay on it, the more it conforms around you. Even though I sank into the foam deeply, it’s still dense and supportive , so it still kept my head and neck elevated.

TEMPUR-Cloud Pillow Loft

In addition to firmness, each sleeping position does best with a different loft. Side sleepers  are most comfortable with a higher loft, back sleepers with a medium loft, and stomach sleepers with a lower loft.  The TEMPUR-Cloud’s loft is 5 inches, which is a medium loft.

Let’s go over my experience with the TEMPUR-Cloud in different sleeping positions .

Side — While the TEMPUR-Cloud doesn’t fit the bill for a side sleeper pillow — it has a medium loft and firmness. Still, I found it to be  comfortable for lying on my side . The foam does a nice job of providing neck support while side sleeping . However, if you have a larger frame or broader shoulders, the loft may not be high enough to keep your head and neck aligned.

tempur cloud side sleeping

Back — I loved the TEMPUR-Cloud for sleeping on my back. The medium firmness and medium loft are just perfect for lying on your back. It’s just supportive enough to maintain alignment, while still allowing you to sink in cozily.

tempur cloud back sleeping

Stomach — I was surprised to find the TEMPUR-Cloud actually worked quite well for stomach sleeping. While the loft is higher than I would recommend for stomach sleepers , the foam compresses so much that I didn’t notice any craning . If you’re a full-time stomach sleeper , I’d still recommend something softer or with a lower loft to prevent neck pain. But  if you’re a combo stomach sleeper , the TEMPUR-Cloud could be a great option.

tempur cloud stoamch sleeper

Under the Arm — The TEMPUR-Cloud is a comfortable pillow for sleeping with under the arm. The foam is soft enough to be cozy and huggable.

Between the Legs — I think it could work well for sleeping with it between the legs, as the TEMPUR-Cloud offers such deep contouring that it will adapt around your legs to offer pressure relief and maintain hip alignment.

What is the TEMPUR-Cloud Pillow Made Of?

Now let’s go over what this pillow is made of.

Cover: The TEMPUR-Cloud has a quilted polyester knit cover . It’s hypoallergenic, removable, and machine washable .

tempur cloud pillow 3

Core: The core of the TEMPUR-Cloud is a single block of formed TEMPUR Material , which is Tempur-Pedic’s proprietary memory foam.

tempur cloud memory foam

Is the TEMPUR-Cloud Pillow Good for Hot Sleepers?

The TEMPUR-Cloud is a super adaptive memory foam pillow , so it will naturally trap a bit of heat. Memory foam is able to contour deeply around you by molding with your body heat, so it’s not the best material for hot sleepers .

When I was testing this pillow, I didn’t notice it being exceptionally hot, but it definitely won’t keep you cool. If you are interested in a cooling pillow, I’d recommend taking a look at our best cooling pillows roundup.

TEMPUR-Cloud Pillow Sizes and Prices

Curious how much the TEMPUR-Cloud costs? Here are the prices, broken down by size. All prices are listed before discounts.

My Final Thoughts About the TEMPUR-Cloud Pillow

All in all, I’m a big fan of the Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Cloud pillow . I love the high-quality feel of the TEMPUR Material foam. I’ve tested a lot of different memory foams and I felt that Tempur-Pedic’s foam stood out as especially slow-moving and thick. And it allows for really deep contouring , compared to other foams.

I also love that this pillow is versatile enough to work for every sleeping position — and as a back sleeper , I thought it was exceptionally good for those of us who sleep on our backs! And I also appreciate that the pillow cover is machine washable .

tempur cloud logo

But this pillow isn’t the best choice for hot sleepers , since the memory foam naturally absorbs a lot of body heat. And the TEMPUR-Cloud only comes in one standard size , so if you’re looking for a king size pillow or another non- standard size , it might not be the best option for you.

TEMPUR-Cloud Pillow Policies and FAQs

How does the tempur-cloud pillow ship.

Tempur-Pedic offers free shipping within the contiguous United States. Customers in Hawaii and Alaska will have to pay an additional shipping fee.

Does the TEMPUR-Cloud pillow come with a sleep trial?

No, the TEMPUR-Cloud does not come with a sleep trial period. According to Tempur-Pedic’s return policy, it can only be returned if it is already damaged or defective when it arrives in the mail.

Does the TEMPUR-Cloud pillow come with a warranty?

Yes, the TEMPUR-Cloud pillow comes with a 5-year warranty.

Is the TEMPUR-Cloud pillow machine washable?

The TEMPUR Material core cannot be washed, but the removable cover is machine washable.

Do I need to use a pillowcase with the TEMPUR-Cloud?

Because the pillow cover is removable and washable, you don’t need to use a pillowcase if you don’t want to. However, you certainly can — and using a pillowcase will ensure that your pillow stays even cleaner.

Is the TEMPUR-Cloud too soft?

Tempur-Pedic advertises this pillow as “extra soft,” but after testing it out, I felt it had more of a medium firmness than soft. The foam is very pliable and adaptive, so in that sense it is “soft,” but overall, the pillow is still quite supportive and sturdy.

What is TEMPUR Material?

TEMPUR Material is just Tempur-Pedic’s proprietary memory foam. All memory foam is made from polyurethane with different production methods or chemicals used to change the viscosity and density. Fun fact: Memory foam was invented by NASA to use for aircraft cushions!

TEMPUR-Cloud Pillow Vs

Now let’s compare the TEMPUR-Cloud to another pillow: the Purple Harmony.

TEMPUR-Cloud Pillow vs Purple Harmony Pillow

purple harmony

  • The Purple Harmony pillow has a latex core and utilizes Purple’s proprietary hyper-elastic polymer Purple grid in the form of a Purple Grid Hex gel pad sewn into the cover . Both the latex and the Purple grid make the Purple Harmony a super cooling pillow — it even feels cool to the touch .
  • This pillow is super bouncy, responsive, and supportive, but still allows for enough give that you can sink into it.
  • It’s also available in a l ow, medium, and high loft , making it versatile for different sleepers.
  • If you want to learn more, take a look at our Purple Harmony pillow review .

Top 8 Tempur-Pedic Pillows Review 2024

Tempur-Pedic Symphony Pillow

Tempur-Pedic Symphony Pillow

  • Filling: memory foam
  • Cover: polyester
  • Size: Standard
  • Height: 5 inches
  • Sleep position: all sleepers

More features: dual-sided material, durable, reliable, removable cover, hypoallergenic

The Tempur-Pedic symphony pillow is suitable for all sleepers, so it is one of their most popular products. It has a memory foam filling, and the standard five-inch height is good for virtually anyone.

This product is well-suited to those who suffer from aches and pains. It is arguably the best Tempur-Pedic pillow for shoulder pain as it offers a great level of support and relieves the pressure for both stomach sleepers and side sleepers. It gives the right level of support before bouncing back into shape.

  • We like the fact that this pillow has a removable, hypoallergenic cover so that you can just pop it in the machine when you’re ready. The Tempur material is really impressive, too, and it pops straight back into shape even after you’ve been resting your head on it all night.
  • This is quite a soft pillow which might be exactly what you need, but for some people who are looking for a firm feeling around the head and neck, this could be the ideal option. If you are the sort of person who likes a firm pillow, then it is worth looking at some of the other models on the list.

Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Cloud + Cooling ProHi Pillow

Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Cloud + Cooling ProHi Pillow

  • Cover: not specified
  • Size: Queen or King
  • Height: not specified
  • Feel: medium

More features: available in high or low styles, pressure-relieving, innovative cooling technology, high-stretch cover, 5-year warranty

The Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Cloud + Cooling ProHi Pillow is our premium pick and has earned its place on our list due to the fact that it is so good at keeping you cool.

This is the best contour memory foam pillow Tempur-Pedic offers when it comes to keeping cool, so it is ideal for those who live in hotter climates. The cooling gel layer is a superb addition. If you love the feel of the cold side of the pillow, now you can always enjoy it.

  • We love the fact that this premium pillow comes with an additional gel layer to keep people cool, which is even better when you are living somewhere really hot. It is also very adaptable and comes in Queen and King sizes as well as a high and low profile, so there is something for every style of sleeper. It comes with a five-year warranty to protect your purchase as you know that it is made with quality.
  • This has been described by some as having a doughy texture, being quite soft on the inside, and having a squishy feeling as a result. This is a matter of personal opinion, and we personally like the way it feels, but it is softer and heavier than some competing options, so keep this in mind. It is also one of the more expensive options, mainly due to the gel layer, which makes this a premium pick.

Tempur-Pedic ProForm TEMPUR-Cloud Pillow

Tempur-Pedic ProForm TEMPUR-Cloud Pillow

  • Feel: extra-soft

More features: adapting material, pressure-relieving, durable, washable cover

The Tempur-Pedic ProForm TEMPUR-Cloud Pillow is one of the lightest and softest pillows you could ever wish for. It also represents great value for money.

If you like your pillow to feel light as a cloud when you go to bed at night but to still offer a good level of support, we think this could be one of the very best options you could possibly hope to come across. As well as the adaptive material that shapes around your head, the pillow has a five-inch design and still does a good job of relieving pressure.

  • We love just how soft this feels, but the fact that it still remains one of the best Tempur-Pedic pillows for neck pain and back issues by offering some support to your neck and body is really impressive. For the money, it’s an exceptionally good pillow, and if you are happy to buy something that has a lighter feel, then this could be your option. Naturally, this comes down to your personal preference.
  • The featherlight feel is not ideal for everyone, and if you have a heavier head, then this might not have the spring back that you are hoping for if you are looking for a Tempur-Pedic pillow. There is also a smell when you first buy the pillow and get it out of the packaging, which might take a bit of time to go away.

Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Ergo Neck Pillow

Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Ergo Neck Pillow

  • Height: 4.75 inches
  • Sleep position: back and stomach sleepers

More features: different profiles available, therapeutic support, follows natural body curve, hypoallergenic cover

Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Ergo Neck Pillow is something a little different when compared to some of the other models. This pillow is one of the shorter models on the list as it is less than five inches, quite unusual for a neck pillow such as this.

It’s great for side sleepers and for back sleepers, as it gives therapeutic support for the shape of your body and is even designed for matching the curvature of your body. The fact that it has a firmer feel and is excellent for matching your body means it is a good option for side sleepers.

  • The firm design means not just comfort but support, so if you are the type of person who experiences neck pain or even gets migraines because of your bad posture while sleeping, this can be a real life-saver.
  • The smaller profile of this model means that it is great for smaller and medium frames, but some bigger people might find that this doesn’t really give them the full level of support they are hoping for. luckily there are a few different profiles that you can opt for if you need something to suit larger bodies. It’s also not suitable for stomach sleepers.
  • Our 5 pick for the: best pillow for snoring
  • Our 3 pick for the: best pillows for cpap users

Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Cloud Breeze Dual Cooling Pillow

Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Cloud Breeze Dual Cooling Pillow

  • Filling: memory foam with a gel layer
  • Height: 6.4 inches

More features: cooling, pressure-relieving, adaptive material, breathable cover

The Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Cloud Breeze Dual Cooling Pillow is another cooling pillow that does a brilliant job even in hot situations.

It has a medium feel meaning that it is not too soft, and it is not too hard. The 6.4-inch design is higher than some of the competing models, and it has an adaptive design just like the other models on this list, meaning it is great for those who want something that will bounce straight back and give their head and shoulders enough support.

  • This is a versatile pillow, so people who sleep in all kinds of positions can use the pillow. On top of that, it is great for those who are looking to buy something they can adapt to their preferences as you can use a high, low, and mid-profile model, and you can even choose if you want a king or queen size.
  • The micro-cushions on one side mean that you can only use this in one position. If you're the sort of person who is used to flipping the pillow in the middle of the night, this can actually get frustrating. This pillow has also been known to lose its shape a little over time, which is rare for Tempur-Pedic pillows.

Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Cloud ProMid Pillow

Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Cloud ProMid Pillow

  • Size: Queen and King
  • Height: 6.5 inches

More features: traditional shape, pressure-relief, mid-profile design, supportive technology

This Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Cloud ProMid Pillow is a versatile pillow that can fit those who need King or Queen designs and it is suitable for all different sleepers, and it is one of the best Tempur-Pedic pillows or front sleepers due to the mid-profile design.

This is great for those who don’t want to get hot and sticky at night. It has a gel level on both sides of the pillow so that you can stay cool, and the breathable fabric means it is comfortable all night, even in searing heat.

  • In spite of the fact that this is a light and soft pillow, it has a fantastic level of support, making it one of the best Tempur-Pedic pillows for migraines and those who suffer from headaches in the mornings. We love the fact that this pillow is so very versatile. There aren't many styles of sleeper who would find that this is hard to get on board with, as it pretty much suits everyone, whichever weird positions you end up in during the evening.
  • This is a little bit of a more expensive model for what it is. The cooling features are great, but some people have reviewed this product claiming there are actually some similar models that could be suitable in spite of costing a little bit less. We’re not sure about that, but if you are willing to splash out, this versatile pillow is ideal.

Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Body Pillow

Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Body Pillow

  • Cover: polyester knit
  • Size: Queen
  • Feel: medium-firm
  • Sleep position: side-sleepers or expectant mothers

More features: responsive, adaptable, durable, machine washable cover

Not everyone is looking for a pillow for their head while they sleep, and the  Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Body Pillow is the best Tempur-Pedic cervical pillow and a great contoured Tempur-Pedic pillow that means you can sleep on your side with the comfort of this responsible pillow. This position has been proven to be great for expectant mothers.

We love this product for those who sleep on their sides, so you don’t have to be an expectant mother to get the most out of it. The support this pillow offers means it can be good for your hips and good for your knees.

  • The fact that this pillow is exceptionally good for a variety of ailments makes it one of the best Tempur-Pedic contour pillows on the market overall if you are a side sleeper. It’s also ideal if you are in the market for something to help your hips and knees, and for pregnant women, it can be a fantastic option. It is also responsive and machine washable.
  • This is quite a big, bulky, and heavy pillow. This is pretty much essential when you think of what it is designed to do, this is a full-body pillow rather than just a neck pillow, but it is still frustrating that it is not the most portable, so if you are staying away from home, you might not be able to bring it with you.

Tempur-Pedic All-Purpose Pillow

Tempur-Pedic All-Purpose Pillow

  • Size: 11.5 x 11.5 inches
  • Height: 4.5 inches
  • Feel: not specified
  • Sleep position: not specified

More features: peanut-sized, portable, engineered to relieve pressure, adaptive material

This Tempur-Pedic foam pillow uses the NASA-approved Tempur material in a portable 11.5-inch package that you can take with you wherever you go. It even clips onto your backpack.

This pillow is great for those who are constantly on the road or who need a pillow that can stay with them throughout the day for lumbar support or for neck support while on your travels. The materials are the same as many of the other pillows on the list, and it also has a polyester cover.

  • The lightweight and versatile design that can be taken pretty much anywhere is unique, but it still retains the Tempur-Pedic signature design, and it springs back into shape after use. It has multiple uses, too, and it can even be used as a leg spacer or an extra bit of neck support.
  • This product is really quite small, which means that it is great for throwing in your backpack or taking on a flight, but it might not be big enough for use in bed, especially if you have a fuller frame. It also has a bit of a smell when you first open it, but this is not unusual for pillows.
  • Things to Consider

What are the features you simply must consider when you buy the best Tempur-Pedic pillow for you? Whether you want the best Tempur-Pedic pillow for snoring or you need something to give you some relief from hip and neck pain while pregnant, we explore the benefits and key features of these pillows in our buying guide.

The range is impressively large now, so there are features that you need to think about when you are looking to buy your first pillow or a pillow for a specific use, such as for pregnancy or travel.

All of the Tempur-Pedic models including our editor’s choice, the Tempur-Pedic Symphony Pillow, have a memory foam pillow that is designed to spring back and offer you enough support for your body and neck. If you are the sort of person, who struggles with neck pains or even migraines after sleep this extra support can be ideal for your needs.

Some of the pillows offered under the Tempur-Pedic range also have some additional fillings such as gel cooling layers; we explain more on these styles of the pillow below.

The vast majority of the pillows on the market have a polyester cover. This is ideal for the majority of people. They are washable. If you want a cover that you can just throw in the machine to clean, then this is ideal. Many types of polyester are designed to be breathable, too. The Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Cloud Breeze Dual Cooling Pillow is a great example of a pillow designed to stay cool, even in some of the hotter climates out there. The breathable pillow covers further aids this. Even a great pillow can be uncomfortable with a poor-quality cover.

King or Queen are the two main sizes of pillows that you can buy, they are designed to fit either King- or Queen-sized beds, with two of the pillows side-by-side. There are some different models out there, such as the Tempur-Pedic All-Purpose Pillow , which is more of a travel pillow.

Tempur-Pedic also offers different models such as body pillows, which can be ideal for those who have hip or knee problems, and a comfy way for side-sleepers to get a good night’s sleep.

The height of a Tempur-Pedic pillow can also play a key part in how it feels. Low-profile pillows can be better for your neck and also the best Tempur-Pedic pillows for stomach sleepers as they do not put a strain on your neck when you are sleeping on your front.

If you are looking for something for neck sleepers, then you might want to go for a slightly higher model. Fortunately, all Tempur-Pedic pillows come with their recommendation for which sleep styles are suitable.

Pillows on this list are between 4.75 and 6.7 inches in height, which can make a big difference to the feel under your head. People are likely to have their own element of personal preference when it comes to a pillow and how they want it to feel, and height comes into that.

The feel of a pillow is dictated by a few things, such as density. Some of these pillows have a super light feeling. The Tempur-Pedic ProForm TEMPUR-Cloud Pillow is an example of a model that feels lighter than air to lay on.

Other things that impact the feel include the material on the outside and also whether or not there is any sort of cooling gel. Those people who plan to use their pillow in hotter climates will find that a cooling gel patch is a really excellent feature and something multiple Tempur-Pedic pillows include.

Tempur-Pedic pillows also come with “adaptive” technology. What does this mean? It can be quite an abstract thing to get your head around, but effectively this is what memory foam is all about. It adapts to the shape and size of your head and the way you are sleeping. This means that you can enjoy a more comfortable and supportive night’s sleep.

  • Sleeping position

If you want to match up the ideal pillow for your needs, then you need to think about the position in which you sleep. Some sleeping positions Trusted Source Say “good night” to neck pain - Harvard Health As with so many things, when it comes to neck pain, an ounce of prevention may be worth a pound of cure. For instance, people who sleep on their stomachs usually prefer shorter profile pillows.

Your sleeping position can also impact other things, such as whether or not you snore, so you might want to look for the best Tempur-Pedic pillow for snoring if this is something you have to deal with.

Tempur-Pedic is one of the best brands out there for both mattresses and pillows when it comes to warranties. The pillows all come with a 5-year limited warranty as standard. This is great if you need to make a claim, but it is also a vote of confidence from the brand in their own products. They are extremely durable and hard-wearing and built to last, which the warranties show.

  • Our verdict

The range is huge, and it is essential that you work out which of the products are most suitable for your own needs before taking the plunge and buying your pillow. The Tempur-Pedic Symphony Pillow has reached the top of our list and gets a rating of 9.9/10 for being such a high-quality and versatile pillow, suitable for all sleep positions.

Next on our list of the best Tempur-Pedic pillows is the Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Cloud + Cooling ProHi Pillow , which has medium softness and is also good for a variety of sleeping positions. It also has cooling technology, and you can choose whether to buy a high-profile or low-profile model to suit your own sleeping style. We’ve rated it 9.8/10.

The Tempur-Pedic ProForm TEMPUR-Cloud Pillow is a medium softness product, but in reality, we think this has more of a soft feel to it. It has a lot of the excellent features we love from the other models without costing a huge amount of money. This makes it a great value pick with a 9.6/10 rating.

What's the best pillow for most people? The Coop Home Goods Original Adjustable Pillow is our top-tested recommendation for most sleepers. It kept its shape in our Lab tests and was a reviewer favorite for feeling comfortable and supportive in every sleep position. And because it's adjustable, you can create your perfect height.

You can learn more about how we test pillows and what to consider when you shop at the bottom of this guide, but first, here's everything you need to know about our top-tested pillows.

preview for Top 5 Pillow Picks

This pillow is filled with a blend of memory foam pieces and microfiber clusters to create the perfect balance between plush and firm. We found that it feels surprisingly supportive and cushy at the same time. And though many high-performing pillows can cost over $100, this one offers a good value.

Our analysts highlighted its machine washable care instructions (so you can easily keep it clean) and how it immediately bounced back to shape during our Lab's pressure tests (so you can expect it to hold up to use). Just note that the outer cover showed signs of pilling over time, but that's typical for a poly/rayon fabric blend.

Tester notes: Our panel of at-home testers gave it high scores across the board, unanimously saying it was better than the pillows they had previously used and that it helped improve their sleep quality. One tester described it by saying, "It wraps around my head and I sink into it," while another told us she was "able to comfortably switch from side to back to stomach and still feel supported and comfortable."

an analyst testing the fill of the coop home goods pillow at good housekeeping

This pillow is Amazon's best-seller and after our pros put it to the test, we can confirm that it lives up to its hype. Though it's a basic pillow that may not be quite as luxurious as other models, it performed exceptionally well and costs a fraction of the price of others. And while most inexpensive pillows use entirely synthetic materials, this one uses a 100% cotton outer cover for an elevated look and feel.

Its down alternative fill is plush, making it ideal for those who prefer softer pillows instead of firmer ones. In Lab evaluations, it held up fairly well to machine washing and pressure tests. It also fit into a standard pillowcase beautifully.

Tester notes: Users agreed it was soft and fluffy. They especially liked how well the fill stayed evenly spread out without clumping. The feedback on support was mixed; several testers praised its support, while some said it felt too flat to be supportive enough for their needs. It was more well-liked by combination sleepers — i.e., people who switch between sleeping on their stomachs, backs and sides — than those who are strictly side sleepers.

A game-changer for side sleepers who struggle to find the perfect alignment, this pillow's unique shape doesn't taper off like a traditional pillow and instead fills the gap between your shoulder and neck. The pillow itself is 5 inches tall, which is recommended for those 5'3" to 6'4" in height.

Pillow Cube also sells a stretchy pillowcase made of polyester and spandex that's ultra soft and perfectly fits this pillow. (You can still use a regular pillowcase if you prefer. It just won't fit as well.) And if you're a hot sleeper, check out the Ice Cube version of this pillow , which has an outer cover with a cool-to-the-touch feel.

Tester notes: Our reviewers were amazed by how much the Side Cube improved their alignment. One said, "It perfectly holds up my head," while another said, "My neck is totally supported." It was best suited for true side sleepers in our tests — i.e., not for those that change position while they sleep — because it felt too tall for users when lying on their stomachs or backs.

READ OUR FULL REVIEW: The Pillow Cube Is the Answer for Side Sleepers

We found this pillow to be surprisingly plush yet still supportive, thanks to its innovative blend of shredded memory foam and soft, fluffy kapok (a natural fiber that’s similar to cotton but feels silkier). The fill is also adjustable, so it works for multiple sleep styles or for people who often change positions.

That said, its lower profile and softer feel are best for stomach and back sleepers because a too-firm or too-high pillow can cause the neck to tilt. And even though it's fairly plush, it easily bounced back to shape after we applied weights in our tests to mimic a head lying on it overnight. Just note that because the pillow uses a grey pattern on its outer cover, it may be visible through white pillowcases.

Tester notes: A reviewer favorite, it earned exceptionally high ratings during our sleep tests. Our reviewers gave it perfect scores for comfort, support and overall satisfaction, plus they said it kept its shape and had them waking up without feeling sore. A tester highlighted that she was able to stop using two pillows by switching to this one, while another summarized, "I like the softness, how supportive it feels and how it is moldable."

Tuft & Needle Premium Foam Pillow

Tuft & Needle uses solid foam instead of foam clusters for a more supportive surface, and it has ventilated holes to make it breathable along with graphite and cooling gel to help prevent overheating. The brand describes the feel as "squishy while remaining supportive," and we fully agree based on our evaluations.

In Lab tests, it bounced back to shape immediately after we applied pressure. It fit fairly well into a pillowcase, but it's just a bit smaller than other pillows so the fit was slightly loose. Only the cover is machine washable, but it laundered well without any shrinkage in our tests.

Tester notes: It was a top-rated pillow among our sleep testers, who gave it perfect scores for comfort and keeping its shape. Plus, our reviewers unanimously said it felt like an upgrade from the pillows they had previously used. Its praise included comments like, "This pillow was firm enough that it kept its shape, but felt overall soft," and, "It was comfortable in multiple sleeping positions and the perfect level of firmness."

For those who prefer real down, this indulgent pick outperformed all other down pillows in our test. It was a reviewer favorite, kept its shape well and fit nicely into a pillowcase. And you don't need to worry about special care instructions. We found it held up to repeated washings without showing signs of wear.

The medium-density version was well-loved in our tests, but it's also available in soft and firm. On top of that, we liked its outer cover made of cotton sateen. Double stitching around the hem helps make sure the down doesn't poke through during use.

Tester notes: Testers loved its softness and gave it perfect scores for comfort and overall satisfaction. One even described it as "absolutely dreamy" and feeling "like a marshmallow." They also gave this pillow high marks for support and staying at a comfortable temperature throughout the night.

Tuft & Needle Down Alternative Pillow Set

Tuft & Needle makes our list again, but this time for its synthetic stuffing that's lightweight yet still significantly firmer than other down alternative pillows . It aced all of our Lab's evaluations including pillowcase fit, shrinkage after laundering and how well it kept its shape after we applied weight. This is especially important because it's designed for back and side sleepers who need their pillow to keep its shape all night for proper alignment.

On top of that, it uses a down alternative, which is ideal for easy care and a lower cost. In fact, this set of two pillows costs less than some individual ones we tested from other brands. The fill also prevents it from feeling too dense, which can sometimes be a downside to pillows made for side sleepers.

Tester notes: Our entire tester panel was impressed with how it stood up to pressure, and one user told us it "kept its shape better than any other pillow I've ever used." More importantly, they all rated it as supportive and comfortable to sleep on. One even called out its luxurious attention to detail, saying it had "excellent quality with good materials and stitching."

This down alternative pillow stands out for its temperature-regulating cover. It's made with Outlast viscose which stores and releases body heat to prevent you from overheating while you sleep. Unlike other cooling pillows that feel initially cool to the touch, we found that this one works all night long to help keep you at a comfortable temperature.

This pillow also aced Lab evaluations when we looked at how well it keeps its shape after use, how well it holds up to washing and how well it fits into a pillowcase. Even if you're not a hot sleeper, this one's a great choice because it's proven to be durable and long-lasting.

Tester notes: Our panel unanimously said this pillow kept them at a comfortable body temperature all night. They also gave it high marks for overall comfort while sleeping and keeping its shape during use. One tester told us, "I was very skeptical about the cooling claims of the pillow and was so pleased to find them to be true! The pillow never became hot like my own pillows do."

hands pushing down on a pillow

Not too firm yet not too plush, this pillow has Talalay latex on the inside that's surrounded by Purple's signature elastic grid material, which feels equally soft and supportive. It also comes in three heights to fit a range of body types and sleep positions.

The pillow bounced back to shape perfectly in our Lab evaluations, even after weights were left on top for 8 hours. Only the cover is machine washable, but it held up to our laundering tests. And though it's pricey, the brand offers a 100-night trial so you can sleep on it for a few months to make sure you love it.

Tester notes: Our at-home reviewers praised its support, shape retention and breathability, with each one highlighting the fact that it stayed cool all night long. They also agreed that they wanted to continue using it after the test. One tester summarized it by saying, "I stayed cool all night and the texture of the pillow was very soft and supportive."

If you're looking to spend as little as possible, this Amazon-brand pillow is your best bet. It's sold in pairs and outperformed other styles on the market that cost over triple the price . And even though the polyester down-alternative fill helps it cost less, we found it held up well to washing so you can clean your pillow without worrying that it'll fall apart.

The pillow comes in two firmness levels, and the softer one is more ideal for stomach or back sleepers. It's also perfect for kids who need a lower profile to match their smaller frames. The medium one is designed for side and back sleepers, though it may not feel sturdy enough for larger frames that need more support.

Tester notes: Users told us they especially enjoyed how soft this pillow felt, with one saying, "I like how fluffy this pillow is and how well it maintains shape after continued use." Though some wished it were taller and denser, they gave it good scores for allowing them to wake up without soreness.

Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Neck Pillow

TEMPUR-Neck Pillow

If you need a firmer pillow or a supportive shape to help alleviate neck discomfort, this is the pillow for you. It's been on the market for years and has stood the test of time thanks to its solid memory foam that's ergonomically designed to give back and side sleepers proper alignment. Unlike most other pillows, the shape is contoured to fit the curve of your head, neck and shoulders.

It also has a slimmer profile so it won’t feel too high, though we found that it has a bit of an awkward fit inside a pillowcase. Still, it held up to our pressure tests, and it comes in small, medium and large sizes to properly fit different body types. Its outer cover is removable and can be machine-washed.

Tester notes: Testers who prefer firm pillows told us this one felt supportive and great to lie on. "It fit around my neck and shoulder perfectly," said one. Another tester called out how it sinks in very slowly to mold to individual shapes. Just note that it's much firmer than other pillows on our list, so it's not ideal for everyone.

Naturepedic Organic 2-in-1 Latex Pillow

Organic 2-in-1 Latex Pillow

Latex pillows are ideal for those who prefer organic materials or more bounce (i.e., less sinking in) than memory foam. This one is certified organic by the Global Organic Latex Standard , and its latex fill is shredded so you can add or remove some to find the perfect height. Plus, it's reversible with different fabrics on each side. On one side there's a stretchy, smooth material that's designed to conform to the shape of your head and neck, and the other has a fluffy quilted side filled with PLA batting to make it feel plush.

The best part is that you don't have to sacrifice quality for sustainability. It earned high scores in both Lab and consumer tests. The pillow kept its shape even after pressure was applied, and the outer cover washed well.

Tester notes: Users said this pillow was comfortable, supportive and kept them at a good temperature. They all enjoyed the versatility between its adjustable fill and two-sided design, with one saying, "My initial reaction was just 'Wow!'" Another told us, "This is literally the greatest pillow I have ever slept on."

How we test pillows

Each year, we evaluate dozens of pillows in the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab, where analysts put each one through the wringer. We also send them home with sleep testers to make sure they'll perform in real-life settings. In recent years, we've tested more than 175 different pillows . Our evaluations start in the Lab:

hands putting a pillow in a washing machine to show how good housekeeping tests pillows

Some pillows are not machine washable, so we first check the care labels to make sure the pillows are washable. If they are, we wash them five times to see whether they'll hold up to laundering.

an analyst evaluates pillowcase fit

We also look at how well they fit into a standard pillowcase to check whether they'll work well with most home bedding.

an analyst places weights on a pillow

Finally, we perform support and recovery tests that mimic the pressure from your head lying on it all night. A weight is left on the pillow for an extended period, then we measure how quickly it returns to its original shape.

When our consumer testers try them at home, they sleep on the pillows for at least a month and then fill out an in-depth survey with both scored and open-ended responses. This helps us gain insight into aspects like comfort, support, temperature regulation and more. Testers are assigned a pillow based on a screening survey to make sure they're getting a good match for their sleep styles.

Types of pillows

While there are many types of pillows to choose from, the fill is the most important aspect when it comes to comfort. Here are the key differences between the most common options:

  • Down pillows tend to be the fluffiest, but a combination of down and feathers may be firmer and less expensive.
  • Down alternative pillows can still feel soft and offer good support, and they're usually made with synthetic fill so they're more affordable than down.
  • Memory foam pillows are thicker and often firmer. You can choose from solid memory foam or memory foam clusters, which feel plusher to lie on while still offering the support of foam.
  • Latex pillows feel similar to memory foam, but they have more of a bouncy feel with less contouring. Another difference: Latex foam is typically made from rubber trees, so it's a good option for those who prefer organic materials.
  • Hybrid pillows mix foam and fiberfill so you get the best of both categories – i.e., supportive yet plush.

There are other pillow types on the market, but they aren't as common, and we don't recommend them for most sleepers. For instance, gel pillows are often marketed as cooling because the gel draws away body heat; however, the cooling effect is only temporary and may not last all night. Buckwheat pillows are gaining popularity as an option made of natural materials, but they aren't as durable or comfortable in our tests, and some users said they irritated their skin. Over-the-head pillows are new and said to promote relaxation, but we'd suggest using a weighted eye mask for the same effect.

How to pick your perfect pillow

After picking your favorite fill, before you get shopping for a new pillow , here's what to keep in mind:

✔️ Make sure it's the right height. There's no one-size-fits-all pillow, and "it’s important that your neck stays 'neutral,'" says Niamish Baxi, M.D. , a physiatrist focusing on spine care and musculoskeletal medicine at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York. "It should not be flexed forward, extended back or rotated. Being in these positions will put a strain on the joints in your cervical spine as well as the muscles surrounding it."

According to Dr. Baxi, "Your ears should be aligned with your shoulders and your chin faced forward." To achieve this alignment, you'll need to factor in your body size and how you sleep. Here's how to pick your height:

  • Body type: Larger-framed people should use a taller pillow, whereas smaller bodies need something flatter. Medium frames can use something in between.
  • Sleep position: Side sleepers need a higher and more supportive pillow, while stomach sleepers should opt for a lower and softer style. Back sleepers (or anyone who switches positions through the night) should opt for a pillow that's somewhere in the middle.

✔️ Take a look at special features based on your preferences. You can browse for innovative specifications like cooling pillows with temperature-regulating properties if you tend to overheat or adjustability if you want to personalize firmness level and height.

✔️ Consider allergies. Certain pillow types should be avoided if you have sensitivities to specific materials, such as latex or buckwheat. If you suffer from environmental allergies, opt for a pillow that can be machine-washed in warm water and consider using a pillow protector to prevent dust, pet dander, pollen and other allergens from sinking in.

✔️ Don't overlook care instructions. Before purchasing a pillow, check the care label to make sure you're willing to wash your pillow as recommended. Most are machine washable, but some are dry clean only, have removable covers or only allow spot-treating. Your pillow will last longer if you wash it two to four times a year and if you use a pillow protector to keep it clean and safe from wear.

But shopping for bedding—especially mattresses and pillows—can be confusing. It often means wading through a ton of sleep science jargon and technical-sounding buzzwords designed to dazzle (i.e., confuse ) you. If you're a back sleeper unsure where to start on your personal journey to pillow bliss, we've got you covered! Our team has done the hard work to cut through all the lingo and find the perfect one for you.

What to consider

Shopping for back-sleeper-friendly pillows is like shopping for just about any other type of pillow. The key is to look for a pillow that keeps your back, neck, and shoulders in neutral alignment. Here are the most important considerations.

Pillow height (sometimes referred to as a pillow's "profile" or "loft") is essential to consider when shopping for your personal best pillow. There is no one right pillow height for back sleepers, as it comes down to what's most comfortable for you . As a rule of thumb, most back sleepers will probably want a pillow with a height of four to five inches. Pro tip: A pillow with adjustable foam inserts (like the Sleep Number True Temp Ultimate ) or removable foam fill is a great way to dial in your perfect height without having to buy multiple pillows.

Fill material

The most popular fill materials for back-sleeper-friendly pillows are memory foam (including gel-infused memory foam), latex, and down or down alternatives. Each fill has its pros and cons.

  • Memory foam pillows easily conform to the weight and shape of your head, neck, and shoulders, so it's most likely to keep your body in neutral alignment while you sleep. But the material is notorious for trapping body heat, so we recommend pillows with built-in cooling tech (gel-infused memory foam is a great option).
  • Natural latex provides great support to keep the neck and spine properly aligned while also relieving pressure points. It's also durable, breathable, and excellent at helping dissipate moisture and trapped body heat.
  • Genuine down pillows are usually softer and fluffier than foam pillows, so they can be a good option for back sleepers who don't want something that's too firm. Look for pillows with a high fill count (650 or more) as they're most likely to retain their shape for years.

Most back sleepers do best with a pillow that's soft (a.k.a. "plush") or medium in firmness. But, the "right" firmness is also a matter of your personal sleep style, body size, and weight. In general, back sleepers will want a memory foam, latex, or true down/down alternative pillow with a good blend of support and pressure relief.

Ease of cleaning

Proper care and cleaning of your bedding goes a long way toward extending its shelf life. All of the pillows we recommend feature removable covers that are washable independent of the pillows themselves. But if you live in a household with kids or pets where sometimes spot cleaning just isn't enough, consider pillows with a fill material that can be hand-washed. Almost all pillows, including our recommendations below, require air drying.

Budget is almost always a concern when shopping for bedding (or anything household-related, really). Thankfully, all of the pillows we recommend are reasonably affordable, with most coming in under $125.

How we chose

Every year, our sleep-enthusiast editors vet dozens of pillows, including the best pillows for back sleepers. For this roundup, we examined more than a dozen models—from travel pillows to memory foam pillows —to compare overall quality, long-term durability, fill type, price, ease of care, and, of course, how comfortable each one is for those who tend to sleep flat on their backs. We also consulted with two chiropractors and two sleep specialists on what type of bedding to look for. Ultimately, our team agreed on the seven models below as our picks for the best pillows for back sleepers in 2024.

Combo back sleepers—those who sleep mostly on their backs but transition to their side or stomach during the night—have it rough. It's difficult to find one pillow that supports every position. Sleep Number's True Temp Pillow is just the trick. The Contour version features a uniquely contoured design that's slightly higher on one side. This allows for rotating the pillow during the night, so you're always resting on the edge with the right support for your sleep position.

"This has been my go-to pillow for over a year," said one tester. "I'm primarily a back sleeper, but switch to my side and sometimes my stomach. With a quick rotation (even while I'm half-asleep), the True Temp Pillow allows me to stay comfortable in every position."

It's filled with 100% memory foam, which provides a good mix of "give" and support, more so than most traditional down pillows. The foam actively removes built-up body heat and moisture, and the washable cover is cool to the touch, so you're never left chasing the elusive "cool side." We also love that, while some brands don't offer a sleep trial or easy return/exchange policy on their pillows, Sleep Number delivers a solid 100-night guarantee.

With a premium design, a contoured silhouette, built-in cooling tech, and a money-back guarantee, this was an easy pick for our "Best Overall" pillow for back sleepers in 2024.

(The True Temp Pillow is also available in an upgraded Ultimate version. This flagship model includes three swappable foam inserts, allowing you to dial in your own personal "best" level of comfort and support.)

Nobody likes endlessly searching for the cool side of the pillow, especially in the dark, when you're half-asleep. Slumber Cloud makes some of our favorite cooling sheet sets , and it brings the same temperature-regulating design to its cooling pillows , too. The aptly named UltraCool pillow features a cool-to-the-touch polyester cover infused with Outlast (a fantastic NASA-inspired, stay-cool material used in some of the best bedding). It's also soft and removable for easy machine-washing.

The UltraCool Pillow is available in two firmnesses, though we recommend Soft/Medium for back sleepers and combo sleepers who like to switch between their stomach and back. The profile is perfectly sized for both types of sleepers, although a Medium/Firm option is available for back sleepers looking for even more support with a higher loft. In either profile, the down-alternative polyester fill helps the pillow maintain its shape without premature sagging or developing lumps over time. After more than a year of testing, we were pleasantly surprised to find the pillow still looks brand new.

Even more surprising is the price. It's more affordable than most we tested, and is even cheaper if you buy more than one.

Tempur-Pedic's own memory foam is another go-to favorite of ours. It's pricey, but cools better than almost any other foam on the market. Plus, it's ultra-comfy and ergonomic for any sleep position. It's truly a "you get what you pay for" product, and the Tempur-Neck Pillow is no exception.

This pillow uses the same best-in-class Tempur foam found in the brand's premium mattresses. Like Sleep Number's True Temp Pillow , the contoured design is great for any sleep position, making it a versatile option for combo back sleepers. Our team found that extra-firm memory foam was a bit too firm for our liking. However, that does mean that it retains its shape remarkably well, year after year. If you suffer from back pain or need an extremely supportive pillow, this could be right for you.

We do like that it's available in three distinct sizes—Small, Medium, or Large—so you can snag the best one for your body shape and personal favorite sleep pozish. (Pro tip: Check the chart on Tempur-Pedic's website to confirm the right size before buying!)

Pillow height is almost as—and sometimes more —important as fill material. That's why adjustable pillows are the way to go for most sleepers. This is true for back sleepers and doubly true for combo sleepers who like to switch positions in the night. This two-pack of EverSnug adjustable-layer pillows features multiple polyester inserts that can be added or removed to edit the height/profile.

Our team found the soft, down-alternative fill to be both comfy and supportive in every position. The allergy sufferers in our group of testers especially liked the hypoallergenic, down-free construction. Both pillows come wrapped in a soft, breathable sateen cover that's relatively cool to the touch. On the down side, we found that these pillows are more prone to premature flattening than most on our list. Our samples lost their shape much faster than most others we tested over the last year.

The biggest thing these pillows have going for them is price. They're significantly cheaper than any true down option worth buying. The value alone makes them some of the most affordable back-sleeper-friendly pillows in this year's roundup. Plus, EverSnug promises a 100% money-back guarantee if you're unhappy with them for any reason.

If you're part of the Purple bedding cult, we get it. The brand's mattresses are incredible, but its pillows are every bit as good. We love the Purple Harmony Pillow because it feels like a tiny version of one of its mattresses. It's available in three heights, but we recommend the 5.5-inch tall Low version for back sleepers looking for neutral head/neck/spine alignment.

This pillow combines a Talalay Latex core with Purple's "secret sauce"—its proprietary gel design. The result is a sleep surface that's naturally cooling, pressure-relieving, and perfectly supportive with a "springiness" that's neither too firm nor too soft, making it the perfect option for back sleepers. It's all wrapped in a moisture-wicking stretch knit cover that's machine-washable for easy-peasy maintenance. The back sleepers on our test staff—most of whom are already Purple mattress fans—universally loved the design of this model. William Hatten , DC, a chiropractor and owner of Hatten Family Chiropractic, confirms that the Harmony is his go-to favorite pillow, calling it "the best pillow on the market."

At more than four pounds (five pounds for the Tall version), the Harmony Pillow is by far the heaviest of every model we tested for this roundup. It might not seem heavy , but it certainly feels like it for a bed pillow. That heft makes it great as a weighted therapy pillow for those interested in that sort of thing (we love it!). But it may prove a little too heavy for those who like to frequently move and reposition their pillows in the middle of the night.

On the downside, it's the priciest option on our list of recommendations. But, "if only the best will do ..."

Ostrichpillow doesn't have the brand-name cache of industry giants like TempurPedic and Purple. But its simply named Memory Foam Bed Pillow boasts a premium design and many of the same great specs as pricier labels. The five-inch profile and scalloped design are spot-on for what Dr. Jenkins recommends for back sleepers. Like the True Temp and Tempur-Neck pillows above, this model features a contoured shape that supports any sleep position. Just turn it 45 degrees to switch between side-friendly and back-/stomach-friendly "modes." The medium-density memory foam fill strikes a just-right balance of firmness that works great for back, side, or stomach sleepers.

This pillow is not specifically billed as a "cooling pillow." However, our testers found the memory foam is designed with open channels that promote good air circulation and prevent overheating. We're happy to report that they work very well in all but the hottest ambient temperatures.

One unexpected feature our staff liked about this pillow is its size. It's smaller than a standard pillow—the smallest in this year's roundup, actually—without compromising on comfort. But that compact footprint makes it more travel-friendly than most other pillows for back sleepers. It stuffs down even smaller to a packable, air-travel-friendly size, making this a great option for replacing your bed pillow at home and your favorite t ravel pillow on the go.

For some back sleepers, there's just no substitute for down. DownLinens' flagship Ultimate White Goose Down Pillow "is for people who really like down," says interventional pain specialist Dr. Jacob Hascalovici , MD, PhD. "There's a lot of down fill in this pillow, and it's very supportive." With a 650-fill-power design, it's loftier and slightly taller than most we tested but still low-profile enough to be back-sleeper-friendly. All that fill also makes for a durable design that holds its shape for years without prematurely flattening.

Our testers loved the 400-thread-count sateen cover, which feels buttery soft and slightly cool to the touch. It's also strong enough to hold up to repeated machine washing and drying.

It's one of the few pillows for back sleepers that's available in three sizes—Standard, Queen, and King—so you can perfectly match yours to your personal bedroom setup. On the downside, it's pricier than most, but that's the nature of genuine down pillows, which are always more expensive than both down alternatives and most memory foam options.

What's the best sleeping position?

While there is no one definitive best sleeping position, most of the experts we've spoken with over the years agree that sleeping on your back seems to offer the most benefits. Hatten confirms that humans are designed to sleep on our backs. That's good news if you're already a back sleeper. But, he goes on to say, "if you're in your mid-40s [and sleep on your side or stomach], it's going to be really hard to convince [yourself] to sleep on your back." So, rather than trying to get you to change a 45-year-old pattern, find a pillow that will work with you in this position.

Do different sleep positions (back, stomach, or side) require different pillows?

The sleep experts we spoke with agreed with a resounding yes! Your preferred sleep position—whether primarily on your back, side, or stomach—is key to determining the right type of pillow for you.

“This is because the head and neck are in different positions in each of these different sleeping positions, and the gap between the mattress and the head is different in each sleeping position," says Nalda.

In addition to knowing your most common sleep position, Dr. Jenkins advises that you may want to consider why you're sleeping in that position in the first place. “There are many reasons people sleep in a typical position, ranging from medical conditions (like sleep apnea, spinal problems, thoracic outlet syndrome, sinus infections, among MANY others), to social situations (spouse/co-sleepers/environmental) to personal (weight, body shapes, bed choices, clothing/ sheets ," Dr. Jenkins says. All of these factors play a role in determining the best pillow for you, and some may need to be addressed with the help of your physician before deciding on the best back-sleeper-friendly pillow.

Read our review of the TEMPUR-Neck™ ergonomic pillow.

If you think your current pillow leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to neck support, it’s time to replace it with one made specifically for this purpose. The TEMPUR-Neck™ pillow is an ergonomic pillow made from memory foam, and as the name suggests, it’s designed to support your neck.

Neck support is crucial, especially for side and back sleepers, and it can be valuable to have a pillow made for this. In most cases, memory foam pillows do a good job of keeping the neck aligned, but the TEMPUR-Neck™ pillow takes this an extra step by providing ergonomic support and comfort.

I tested this pillow myself, and in this review, I’ll share with you its design features, pros, cons, and more.

Sleep Advisor’s Testing Methodology

I tested the TEMPUR-Neck™ pillow in various sleeping positions to see how it supports the neck and head. I was also on the lookout for pressure relief and whether the pillow helps relieve pressure or whether it might cause tension.

During my tests, I also paid attention to things like the overall feel, durability, cleaning and care, temperature, and off-gassing to help sleepers decide if this is the right choice for them.

Who Is the TEMPUR-Neck™ Pillow Best for?

Pros: who might like the tempur-neck™ pillow: .

  • Back sleepers – I love this pillow as an option for back sleepers. I think they should appreciate how well it supports the neck and head so that they remain in alignment with the rest of the spine.
  • People who prefer firm pillows – This pillow has a firm feel, and I believe that makes it a good option for anyone who likes feeling on top of a pillow instead of having their head sinking into it.
  • Consumers who want choices – I was thrilled to see that this pillow was offered in three sizes. Sleepers are able to pick a size that best fits their body.

Cons: Who Might Not Like the TEMPUR-Neck™ Pillow :

  • Those who love soft pillows – If you’re a fan of softer pillows that offer more sinkage, I think the TEMPUR-Neck™ pillow may be too firm for you.
  • Hot sleepers – This pillow is made from memory foam, which is known to retain heat, and instead, I would recommend a cooling pillow if you’re a hot sleeper.
  • Stomach sleepers – The TEMPUR-Neck™ pillow is likely too lofty for those who like sleeping on their stomach. A good pillow for stomach sleepers will be flatter to keep the head and neck from arching too far upward.

What is the TEMPUR-Neck Pillow Made of?

This pillow has a hypoallergenic polyester knit cover with a zipper along the edge, allowing you to easily remove it.  The cover is also machine washable which makes it a breeze to keep clean.

The core of the TEMPUR-Neck™ pillow is made from Tempur® foam, a proprietary material molded into an ergonomic shape. The wave of the pillow is created to follow the natural curves of your neck and head, offering an excellent balance of pressure relief and support. There’s also a polyester netting wrapped around the core to further protect it.

TEMPUR-Neck™ Pillow Firmness & Feel

Firmness .

The company claims this pillow is extra firm, but I think it has more of a standard firm feel. It was designed for back and side sleepers, but after testing it, I’d say it is best suited for just back sleepers. With the TEMPUR-Neck™, you’re not going to experience the sinking that you do with other Tempur-Pedic products, which could make it too rigid for side sleepers.

Although the cover is washable and has a soft and gentle feel, I’d still advise using a pillowcase for added comfort and protection. I enjoyed how the memory foam in this pillow molded and contoured around my head and neck.

When I tested this pillow out on my back and my side, I noticed that there was plenty of lift and spine alignment. However, side sleeping felt too rigid and elevated — to the point where I worry that you may not be able to comfortably sleep through the night. It was a different experience for back sleeping, as I felt that it was a spa-like treat.

One of the best things about this pillow is that you can choose between three sizes. The pillow comes in small, medium, and large. Because the pillow is curved, the loft measures from the highest point where your neck is supposed to be. The large model has a loft of 4.75 inches, the medium is 4 inches, and the small is 3.5 inches. You can find a measuring chart on the company’s website if you need more help deciding on a size.

Weight (Density of the Pillow)

This pillow feels solid and well-made, but I didn’t think that it was overly heavy. The actual weight depends on the size that you buy.

Here are the weights by size:

  • Small: 2.2 pounds
  • Medium: 2.8 pounds
  • Large: 3 pounds

Sleeping on the TEMPUR-Neck™ Pillow

Side sleepers.

Although this pillow is designed with side sleepers in mind, I found that it feels overly rigid for side sleeping. Even though the lift under the head and neck is noteworthy, I would venture to say that may be a bit too much. With that in mind, I still think it should be great for alignment, but I am concerned that the lack of cushion will be off-putting for some side sleepers.

Back Sleepers

I love this pillow for back sleeping and think that it is reminiscent of the pillows used at spas or when getting a massage. The amount of lift my head and neck received when I was testing this as a back sleeper felt wonderful. This pillow may feel a little firm for lightweight sleepers, but I think if they purchase the small size, the cranial and cervical support will surpass this slight call out.

Stomach Sleepers

Stomach sleepers are likely to find this pillow too lofty and uncomfortable. Even the small size with the lowest loft didn’t feel right due to the pillow’s ergonomic shape.

This pillow was not designed for stomach sleepers, and I advise not using it if this is your preferred sleeping position. The TEMPUR-Neck™ feels almost like a choking hazard if you’re on your stomach and is too lofty for optimal alignment.

Sleep Advisor’s Performance Ratings for the TEMPUR-Neck™ Pillow”

Temperature.

The TEMPUR-Neck™ pillow is made from memory foam, which may not be the best option for those who sleep hot. The cover also isn’t designed for temperature regulation, so you might feel heat building up around your head. Read more about cooling pillows here .

For back sleepers, there is plenty of spine alignment and support with this pillow. It feels dense and supportive and maintains a firm feel throughout the night. Although this pillow was constructed for side sleepers too, it may be too supportive and firm for these folks to find all-night comfort.

This pillow comes from a high-quality, reputable brand, so you can expect it to be durable. Furthermore, memory foam is a premium material, so the pillow is unlikely to show signs of wear and tear as quickly. In general, I felt that it was well-made and it could handle multiple years of use.

The ergonomic design and supportiveness of this neck pillow offer high-level comfort for back sleepers. The foam molds around the head and neck to prevent pressure from building up when sleeping on your back. Although it wasn’t as comfortable when I tested it on my side, I still gave it kudos because of the superior spinal alignment. However, the fact that it allows heat buildup may be a turn-off for some people.

Off-Gassing

Memory foam is known to have a chemical-like smell known as off-gassing when it is removed from its packaging. However, I didn’t notice any with the TEMPUR-Neck™.

The TEMPUR-Neck™ pillow has a hypoallergenic cover, so it’s a good option for people with allergies. On top of that, the memory foam in this pillow is CertiPUR-US® certified.

Cleaning & Care

You can remove the cover for machine washing. However, the foam core isn’t washable, though you can spot-clean it should you want to freshen it up a little.

Sleep Trial & Warranty

There’s a five-year warranty on this pillow. However, the company has a strict policy in which they don’t offer any trials for their pillows due to the personal nature of the product.

TEMPUR-Neck Pillow Frequently Asked Questions

Are Tempur pillows good for neck pain?

This pillow should do a good job of alleviating neck pain by supporting optimal spinal alignment for the head and neck while sleeping on your back or side, though I personally would have preferred some slightly softer for side sleeping. Plus, the memory foam adapts and molds to the curves, so there are no empty spaces between your neck and the bed. Here you can read more about good pillows for neck pain .

How do you use a TEMPUR-Neck™ pillow?

To use a TEMPUR-Neck™ pillow, place your neck at the tallest part of the pillow, and your head should rest on the lower part of the pillow. The taller part helps fill in the gap between your neck and the mattress.

How long do TEMPUR-Neck™ pillows last?

Tempur-Pedic pillows should last around five years, given how well-made they feel. These pillows are high-quality and have a durable cover, so you shouldn’t have to worry about a new one any time soon.

My Final Thoughts on the TEMPUR-Neck™ Pillow

The TEMPUR-Neck™ is a champion for back sleepers, and I highly recommend it for those looking for a balance of support and pressure relief. It earned an overall score of 4.8 out of 5.

The ergonomic design molds nicely to your head and neck. Additionally, the pillow comes in three sizes, so you should be able to find a great fit for your body.

Although it wasn’t my favorite for side sleepers due to the abundance of firmness, I was still impressed with its spinal alignment capabilities. This pillow was not designed for stomach sleepers, and I recommend that these people just stay away from it.

Tempur-adapt v purple restore mattress: price, trials and warranties.

  • Tempur-Pedic and Purple both have 10 year warranties
  • Sales vary but Purple have evergreen sales
  • Purple offer a longer sleep trial at 100-nights

Tempur-Pedic Tempur-Adapt mattress on a platform bed

The Tempur-Adapt and Purple Restore are both premium mattresses from both brands and that is ultimately reflected in the price. Both mattresses have the same MSRP starting point of $1,999 but whilst the Tempur-Adapt starts at a twin size the starting size for Purple is a Twin XL.

During the current sales you can get a Tempur-Adapt queen size mattress for $2,999 which is a $200 saving. Whilst the Purple Restore is priced at $2,099 for a queen size mattress saving $300. It’s worth noting that the Tempur-Adapt does come in an all foam version which is slightly cheaper with MSRP prices starting from just $1,699 and during the current sales a queen size all foam mattress with medium tension will cost $1,999.

Both mattress brands offer free delivery and have a 10-year warranty. There is a difference in the sleep trial. Purple offer a 100-night sleep trial whilst Tempur-Pedic offer 90 nights.

Tempur-Adapt v Purple Restore mattress: Materials & design

  • The Purple Restore is just 0.5” deeper
  • Purple use a unique GelFlex grid design
  • The Tempur-Adapt has a layer of the famous Tempur-Pedic foam

Both of these mattresses have a similar construction when it comes to design. The Tempur-Adapt has three layers whilst the Purple Restore has an additional  forth layer.

The Tempur-Adapt Hybrid has an 11” profile with a 4cm top comfort layer made from Tempur-Material, there’s then another 4cm support layer before a 3cm layer of over 1,000 premium spring coils. The Tempur-Material is so good for those with joint pain as it has a conforming feel but the slow responsiveness of this foam is off-set by the layer of coils which add a bit of bounce.

The Purple Restore is slightly deeper at 11.5” and the first layer is a GelFlex Grid which is Purples propriety material that offers cushioning comfort and support, followed by a layer of edge support foam, then a layer of comfort foam before a base of responsive coils which work with the GelFlex grid to create a cooler sleep. The Purple Restore has a super responsive feel with some bounce, thanks to the grid and coil system.

Tempur-Adapt v Purple Restore mattress: Comfort & support

  • The Purple has soft or firm options
  • The Tempur-Adapt comes in just medium
  • Both offer superior pressure relief

When it comes to judging which is more supportive between the Tempur-Adapt and the Purple Restore it’s a difficult choice. That’s because both of these mattresses have unique materials that rival even the best memory foam mattresses , that contour to the body keeping the spine in perfect alignment whilst the springs add a layer of responsiveness that make it easy to move around.

The Purple Restore is a great choice for all types of sleeper but side sleepers will find the pressure relief outstanding. The Tempur-Adapt hybrid is also a great choice for all sleepers but this mattress is better suited to back sleepers who need some sturdy support.

Purple does have a choice of soft or firm whilst the Tempur-Pedic comes in just a medium rating. However, it is worth noting that if you’re suffering from joint pain, the soft option won’t help ease that pain. The Tempur-Adapt may also claim that it’s medium but this is more on the firmer side so you will find your curves are hugged but you won’t get that sink-in feel that some memory foam mattresses can cause.

Both of these mattresses also offer excellent motion isolation which is great news for anyone sharing their bed with a restless partner or pets. Both mattresses also do a great job at edge support, so it’s a good option for sleepers who like to lie close to the edge or enjoy sitting on the bed relaxing and don’t want to feel like they’ll fall off.

Tempur-Adapt v Purple Restore mattress: Temperature regulation

  • The inclusion of coils adds to overall breathability
  • The GelFlex grid had 2,800 open cells to help airflow
  • Both beds have a breathable cover

Both beds do a really good job at keeping cool at night. However, the Purple Restore does do a slightly better job at keeping temperatures regulated. The GelFlex grid in the purple Restore dissipates heat and works with the responsive coils to provide additional airflow. The Tempur-Adapt doesn’t have any cooling layers but having the layer of coils does mean that it sleeps considerably less hot than the all-foam model.

Both of these mattresses have a cooling cover. The Tempur-Adapt has a cool-to-the touch SmartClimate® cover is made with cooling fibers. The Purple Restore has a soft flex cover which is made using breathable materials. Both of these covers also add to the overall luxe feel of the mattress.

Tempur-Adapt v Purple Restore mattress: Which should you buy?

Buy the tempur-pedic tempur-adapt hybrid if....

✅ You have a larger budget: Tempur-Pedic mattresses are more expensive than most other brands including Purple. If you are able to spend a little more we recommend opting for the Tempur-Pedic as it has a good reputation for durability.

✅ You want the comfort of memory foam: The Tempur-Material is one of the best memory foam you can get. It offers unmatched pressure relief and adapts to your body weight and body heat for extra comfort.

✅ You like sleeping on the edge of your bed:  If you like to sleep on the edge or the bed or simply like to sit on the edge to chill out this mattress is perfect.

Buy the Purple Restore mattress if...

✅ You’re a side sleeper: This mattress is suited to all kinds of sleeper but side sleepers will find it extremely comfortable. The responsive bounce of the coils combined with the GelFlex grid means you will get all the support you need on your back, knees, hips and shoulders.

✅ You sleep hot: Whilst the Tempur-Adapt does a good job of not getting too hot, the Purple Restore has breathable cover, heat-dissipating GelFlex Grid, and airflow-boosting coils.

✅ You want firmness options: You can choose from two firmness levels, there’s a soft choice for side sleepers and firm for back and stomach sleepers.
