South Lakes Wild Animal Park // Barrow in Furness

An award winning zoo that allows you to get up close to a wide range of animals from across the world.

Located close to Dalton-in-Furness in the Lake District is South Lakes Safari Zoo, an award winning 51 acre zoo that is home to a large collection of animals from all over the world. The zoo has been award the Top Attraction for Excellent in the Lake District in 1999, 2000, 2003, 2005 and 2008 by the Cumbria Tourist Board.

One of its main features is that it is one of the few parks to allow primates to roam free with eight species of Lemurs wandering around the grounds as well as deer, emus, kangaroos and wallabies. The rest of the animal collection is wide ranging from lions, tigers, bears, rhinos, hippos, bats and wolves, to parrots, snakes, tortoises, penguins and condors.

Until recently, it was the only zoo in Britain to hold both Siberian tigers and Sumatran tigers, the largest and smallest species, and at one time had the largest collection of kangaroos outside of Australia.

South Lakes Safari Zoo is renowned as being one of the best conservation zoos in the country and raises money for numerous charities. It has successfully bred the endangered Sumatran tiger and in 2008 two rare white rhinos were born at the zoo. There is a large expansion plan currently underway that will bring African elephants to the zoo for the first time.

There is an on-site café, gifts shop, picnic area and adventure playground.

Parks to Visit

Let's go outside!

South Lakes Safari Zoo, Lindal in Furness, Ulverston

We went to Safari Zoo Cumbria by train. (Get off at Dalton train station, then catch number 6, 6X bus to the Zoo.) I have to say there aren’t too many road signs to help to find the zoo on foot, but eventually we found it! 🙂

It is a safari zoo, so you can walk-in some not too dangerous animal’s enclosures. So you can face parrots, kangaroos, lemurs and others. It is safe, but you have to be cautious. You shouldn’t bring food with you in there, you can eat in the zoo of course, but only in the designated areas. But smoking is not allowed anywhere in the zoo.

It is a special experience, not the same as a “normal” zoo and not as scary as a drive-in safari. Not better or worse, but different.

They have a lot of big cats, but we were not lucky enough to see every of them. The big cats are placed in normal enclosures with electric fences, and all safety measurements. Sumatran tigers, lions, wolfs, jaguars, lynx, and snow leopard can be found in the zoo.

Raccoon and Red Panda are really cute and they are in the neighbouring enclosures. And there were two baby Rhinos, which were very special too see.

You can spend a lovely time in this safari zoo on a sunny day.

I found informations referring to this zoo as Safari Zoo Cumbria and also as South Lakes Safari Zoo.

Nearly 500 Animals Have Died at a British Zoo in the Last 4 Years, Records Show

A general view of South Lakes Safari Zoo, formally known as South Lakes Wild Animal Park, in Cumbria, England on June 6, 2016.

N early 500 animals have died inside a British zoo over the last four years, including a jaguar that chewed off its own paw and a tortoise that was electrocuted, newly released inspection records show .

The South Lakes Safari Zoo in Cumbria is facing calls for its closure Wednesday after the government published inspection reports that highlighted the “appalling” conditions the zoo’s animals have endured.

Inspectors found most of the animals at the zoo suffered from a lack of nutrition, cramped quarters and hypothermia, according to the AFP , which cited an inspection report. “The conditions that these animals are being held in is quite frankly appalling and has led directly to the death of a number of them,” the report said.

The long list of fatalities includes an African spurred tortoise that was electrocuted on an electric fence, a pair of snow leopards that were partially eaten in their exhibit, and at least six lion cubs that were put down because zoo allegedly didn’t have space for them, the AFP and the BBC report.

Karen Brewer, a chief executive of Cumbria Zoo Company Ltd, which operates the South Lakes Safari Zoo, told the Guardian that the company was focused on “the animals’ physical and behavioral needs.”
