Revolutionary tour of Berlin 🚩

Updated: Jun 5, 2022

Berlin is one of the most vibrant, historically significant and interesting cities in Europe for the red tourist. The centre of the iron curtain. This blog is part of a series of our travels around the former DDR in May 2022.

Stalinstadt (Ei senhüttenstadt)

Frankfurt an der Oder

Lebus/Seelow/Schwerin

Karl Marx Stadt

This was not our first trip to Berlin, but for those that have never been a great first stop is the DDR museum . This museum is crammed full of interactive exhibits, fun facts, and the ability to drive a 'Trabi' around a virtual Berlin, which combined create the ideal starting point for this trip. If the weather is good, you can grab yourself a drink and something to eat just above the museum which adorns the river spree.

Marx-Engels-Forum

After a short rest and something to eat, cross the road to grab yourself a selfie with the founding fathers, Karl Marx and Fredrich Engles, at the Marx-Engels-Forum . As of early May 2022, this area was covered by what seemed temporary fencing, the photo below is taken from another trip.

revolutionary berlin walking tour

To maximize your revolutionary history and to ensure you have the best 'Red Tourist' trip of Berlin, we recommend Nathaniel Flakin’s Revolutionary Berlin , a walking guide (Pluto Press, 2022). This cleverly crafted and witty exploration of Berlin, enables the reader to step back into any revolutionary historical period of the city. With so much to choose from and so little time in Berlin, we decided to explore just chapter 7 of this book, The East is Red.

House of ministries

We were lucky that we stayed right by our first stop on our The East is Red tour, the ‘ House of Ministries’ (Wilhelmstrase 97). This huge building was used by NAZI’s and the DDR. To the right of the building further own Wilhemstrase, you will see the stunning murals shown in the pictures below. Currently this building is the seat of the German Finance Ministry.

North Korean embassy

Around the corner from the House of Ministries on Glinkastraße, you will find the impressive Embassy of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea .

Alexander square

Just past Marx-Engels forum is the unmissable is Alexander Square (Alexander Platz). Easy to find thanks to the large TV tower (Fernsehturm), which you can go to the top of. This famous square has played an important role throughout the history of Berlin and continues to don some spectacular DDR period buildings.

Stalinallee

Walking away from Alexanderplatz, you reach the impressive Karl-Marx-Alle . This enormous boulevard was built between 1952 and 1960. Between 1949-1961 this street was known as Stalinallee. Either side of this road, you can see the vast 'workers palaces', the amazing flat blocks built by the DDR. This colossal street was also the venue of many May Day rallies and demonstrations. Whilst you make your way toward your next stop, you will go past the stunning Kino International Cinema . A beautiful building, now protected, hosted many a premiere from DDR state owned film studio (Deutsche Film-Aktiengesellschaft). As you walk further down you can go to 70E and find where the giant Stalin statue once stood. No longer there and replaced by a fountain (pictured below) you can continue to explore the history of this famous road at the Cafe Sibylle . This cafe, as Flakin helpfully points out, includes a bit of the moustache and ear from the former statue of the 'man of steel'. This cafe is a nice place to take in the views of the allee and take a small break on our tour. Inside the cafe there are some small exhibits about the history of the street as well as posters to view.

Lenin Square

Carrying on the walking tour, making your way down Karl Marx Allee, you will need to take a left and walk towards what was known as Lenin Square . Historically, the home of a huge red granite statue of comrade Lenin, today all that remains is the housing blocks around it. After visiting this area, we called it a day and grabbed ourselves a much earned beer. There are many more red sites in this chapter of our walking guide worth exploring, but with a tight schedule and many miles to go, we ended the use of Flakin’s guide here.

Hopfenreich craft beer bar

We have been coming to this place for over 10 years across several trips to Berlin. This must go beer bar is fantastic both in winter and summer. Situated in the very trendy Kreuzberg, this craft beer bar includes some of the best craft beer you will find in the city. Huge workbenches, candle light and murals decorate the interior, whilst outside tables with interesting glass are in the centre, allow you to take in this cool part of Berlin. This bar offers all sorts of beers from IPAs, NEIPAs, Stouts and pilsners/lagers.

We had looked other places to grab some good craft beer in Berlin, next on our journey was BRLO . A brand that has several sites across the city, this venue includes a few places to eat, deck chair seating area, as well as an indoor restaurant/bar. As it got colder in the evening, we opted to go inside to the restaurant to have a few beers. Glad we did, the beer range is much more extensive than the limited the kiosks in the outdoor seating area.

Hohenschönhausen prison memorial

After a good night’s rest, we dedicated day 2 to visiting the Hohenschönhausen prison , before continuing the rest of our adventure around the DDR. We didn’t plan our visit, but it is always worth checking the website. We arrived to be told we had around 40 minute wait for an English tour, which suited us as we were able to sit and enjoy some breakfast in the nice canteen area. The prison site itself is so vast, and starts with a short 15 film that contains a certain view of the developments of World War 2 (WW2) and beyond. Our guide was very good and knowledgeable, engaging different parts of the group. However, as most 'Red Tourists' will be used to included a heavy political bias to discussion, explanations of the development and use of the prison. Originally a site used by the NAZIs to provide meals for the local community during the war, this canteen building was transformed into a prison at the end of WW2 by the Soviet Union. This conversion led to the prison being used to house NAZI war criminals. As the sectors were drawn up across Berlin, this prison was given to the DDR by the Soviet Union. As the prison was not deemed fit for purpose and was old, the DDR added new buildings, healthcare and adapted the prison to one of psychological isolation, rather than physical torture. The tour enables you to view all the historical developments of the site and to better understand how political dissidents of the DDR were treated. After the tour which is around 90 minutes, including both outdoor and indoor stops, you can also walk around a small, but impressive exhibit with more information, we would recommend you do.

Berlin Communist & Socialist Tour

revolutionary berlin walking tour

What comes to your mind when you’re in Berlin and someone says “communism”? The Wall? GDR? Hotspot of the Cold War?

All of these things are an important portion of our tour, but they’re only a part of the topic called “communism & socialism”. So our goal is more ambitious than just showing you the Berlin Wall and mentioning a couple of chapters of the Cold War history. We want to give you a holistic understanding of one of the most revolutionary and controversial ideological movements in world history.

How? By way of having a chronological journey from the 19th to 21st century and covering all the main chapters of the history of German communism. You will learn about the fathers of communist ideas – K. Marx & F. Engels and what they really taught about. You’ll hear the story of R. Luxembourg & K. Liebknecht and understand their role in a political struggle that tore German society apart 100 years ago and thus also helped A. Hitler rise to power. You’ll see and compare the Soviet model of socialism exported to Germany after WWII: you’ll experience it architecturally, grasp it geopolitically and perceive it through people’s life stories. Finally, we’ll talk about leftwing movements today.

After this 3 hours Walkative journey, you’ll form a historical Gestalt of communist & socialist ideas! Both in Germany and Europe (and even beyond). Both before and after WWII. Long before and long after.

You will discover:

• Marx-Engels Forum – a memorial dedicated to the fathers of communist ideas

• Liebknecht balcony – a place of the proclamation of the Free Socialist Republic of Germany

• Volksbühne at the Rosa Luxemburg Platz – formerly the most representative theatre in Berlin

• Karl Marx Allee – the most impressive Stalinist architecture in Germany

• Frankfurter Tor – an example of further development of socialist ideas in East Germany

• The Berlin Wall (East Side Gallery) – the longest remaining part of the notorious border between East and West

Very interesting tour with Will!

We joined the tour by tour guide Will, it was a pleasure listening to his stories (he could do good build-ups 🙂 ) and he was happy to answer our questions.

I did the tour wirh will and is a very intesting tour, he really knows about the topic, explains it really well and is always happy to answer any questions

Brilliant tour!

Will was tremendously informative without being either too highbrow or dumbed down. He had a warm personality, and an engaging and warm manner. Can’t recommend too highly (and that’s on a cold, wet February day!)

Best tour we ever had - thanks to Will!

My husband (American) and I (German) booked the tour – it was incredible. Will is an excellent tour guide, able to answer each and every question and the entire tour is on very high level. I’m a school teacher and teach history myself – I couldn’t have had a better tour guide.

This tour is also available as a Private Tour.

The Berliner - Berlin in English since 2002

Walk don’t burn: Revolutionary walking tours

The riot (read: party) of May Day is over a week away, but on April 27 retrace the anarchy of 1987. RevolutionaryBerlin’s three-hour walking tours centre on the Kreuzberg riots as well as Berlin’s little-known past as a colonial power.

Image for Walk don't burn: Revolutionary walking tours

A regular touristy walking tour through Berlin will take you to the Brandenburg Gate. An ‘alternative’ tour will include some former squats and street art. But what about the violence?

That’s where RevolutionaryBerlin, founded by a young American calling himself Bill, comes in. The group’s three-hour walking tours centre on the riots that broke out in Kreuzberg on May 1, 1987, when a supermarket near Görlitzer Park was burned to the ground. Ever since then, street battles between demonstrators and police have erupted every May Day.

While a visitor might recognize only senseless, nihilistic destruction, a walking tour can provide context and insight into the city’s complicated anarchist/left-wing activist scene. The guides (one German, one American, both serious lefties) tend to be a bit one-sided – “demonstrators good, police bad” is the tenor – but their mischievous fascination can be contagious. The stories are padded out with plenty of entertaining anecdotes about the 1968 student movement, the Berlin Wall and even the occasionally violent clashes between different left-wing groups.

For good measure, they provide tips for would-be demonstrators eager to participate in this ‘extreme sport’. They also offer tours on the November Revolution of 1918-19 and Berlin’s little-known past as a colonial power. This is a much-needed alternative to the bigger companies trying to make a buck off Berlin’s seedy image, and it’s run by people who know their way around the city’s myriad revolutionary groups.

Revolutionary Berlin

Revolutionary Berlin

A walking guide.

by Nathaniel Flakin

An immersive radical walking guide to one of Europe's most popular cities

  • Author Biography
  • Endorsements

Few European cities can boast a history as storied and tumultuous as that of Berlin. For more than 150 years it has been at the centre of revolutionary politics; of era-defining struggles between the Left and the Right. It has been bombed, rebuilt and carved in two.

In Revolutionary Berlin , veteran tour guide Nathaniel Flakin invites you to stand in the places where this history was written, and to follow in the footsteps of those who helped write it. Through nine self-guided tours illustrated with maps and photographs, readers enter the heady world of 19th century anti-colonial struggles, the 1918 November Revolution and the 1987 May Day riots — encountering the city's workers, queer community and radical women along the way.

The first English-language guidebook to tell the story of Berlin's radical history, this is a must-have for Berliners and visitors alike.

Nathaniel Flakin is a freelance journalist and historian based in Berlin. He is the author of Martin Monath: A Jewish Resistance Fighter Among Nazi Soldiers .

'A guide through Berlin's riveting history that is gripping, tragic, triumphant and above all, authentic'

'Fascinating and eclectic. This guidebook illuminates hidden histories with clarity, honesty, wit and irony. Read it and walk it!'

'Inspirational. This collection of walking tours of Red Berlin is full of wonderful tales from a city which has, despite everything, remained experimental and revolutionary while others have become little more than malls or museums, all related with a deliciously bone-dry Berlinische humour'

IT’S been well over 30 years since the reunification of Germany, so this month we decided to explore what is left of the former Deutsche Demokratische Republik (DDR).

Using a mixture of an old blue guide book and the recent volume by Nathaniel Falkin, Revolutionary Tours of Berlin (Pluto Press), we planned our latest “Redcation” around East Germany.

Over the next few weeks, we will be sharing stories from our travels, starting with Berlin. We hope you enjoy the below and will support our new Red Tourists blog and information page available via www.redtourists.com .

A reconstruction of the interior of a DDR flat

Berlin is one of the most vibrant, historically significant and interesting cities in Europe for the red tourist — the centre of the iron curtain.

This was not our first trip to Berlin, but for those who have never been, a great first stop is the DDR museum.

This museum is crammed full of interactive exhibits, fun facts, and the ability to drive a “Trabi” around a virtual Berlin, which combined create the ideal starting point for this trip. If the weather is good, you can grab yourself a drink and something to eat just above the museum which adorns the river Spree.

To maximise your revolutionary history and to ensure you have the best “Red Tourist” trip of Berlin, we recommend Nathaniel Flakin’s Revolutionary Berlin, A Walking Guide (Pluto Press).

This cleverly crafted and witty exploration of Berlin, enables the reader to step back into any revolutionary historical period of the city. With so much to choose from and so little time in Berlin, we decided to explore just chapter 7 of this book, The East is Red.

House of Ministries

We were lucky that we stayed right by our first stop on our The East is Red tour, the House of Ministries (Wilhelmstrase 97).

This huge building was used by Nazis, being the headquarters of the Reich Aviation Ministry, and the DDR where it became known as the House of Ministries.

Since reunification the building has housed the German Finance Ministry.

To the right of the building further down Wilhelmstrasse, you will see the stunning murals pictured here. Currently this building is the seat of the German Finance Ministry.

As you walk further down you can go to 70E and find where the giant Stalin statue once stood. It is no longer there and has been replaced by a fountain but you can continue to explore the history of this famous road at the Cafe Sibylle.

Historically, the home of a huge red granite statue of comrade Lenin, today all that remains is the housing blocks around it.

After visiting this area, we called it a day and grabbed ourselves a much-earned beer.

There are many more red sites in this chapter of our walking guide worth exploring, but with a tight schedule and many miles to go, we ended the use of Flakin’s guide here.

Hohenschonhausen Prison Memorial

After a good night’s rest, we dedicated Day 2 to visiting the Houhenschoenhausen prison, before turning to the rest of our adventure around the DDR.

revolutionary berlin walking tour

We didn’t plan our visit, but it is always worth checking the website. We arrived to be told we had around 40-minute wait for an English tour, which suited us as we were able to sit and enjoy some breakfast in the nice canteen area.

The prison site itself is vast and starts with a short film that contains a certain view of the developments of World War II and beyond.

Our guide was very knowledgeable, engaging different parts of the group and discussing the development and use of the prison.

Originally a site used by the Nazis to provide meals for the local community during the war, this canteen building was transformed into a prison at the end of WWII by the Soviet Union.

This conversion led to the prison being used for Nazi war criminals. As the sectors were drawn up across Berlin, this prison was given to the DDR by the Soviet Union.

The tour enables you to view all the historical developments of the site and to better understand how political dissidents of the DDR were handled.

After the tour which is around 90 minutes and has outdoor as well as indoor stops, you can also walk around a small but impressive exhibit with more information, we would recommend this too.

We hope you have enjoyed reading the first part of our Red Tourists DDR road trip.

We hope you will support this project and keep in touch with us by following us across Facebook, Twitter and Instagram by searching Red Tourists.

Walking Tours: Little Germany and the 48ers: An East Village Walking Tour

As the Ottendorfer Library celebrates its 140 th anniversary this December, we will celebrate the German heritage of the East Village that brought it to fruition. When the revolutions of 1848 throughout Europe failed, a number of young German-speaking revolutionaries fled to the East Village, which became the largest German-language speaking community in the world after Berlin and Vienna. With the freedoms of the New World, Little Germany or Kleindeutschland as it became known was a crucible for their energies and talents. On this tour, we will walk to places where Europe’s failed revolutionaries made their mark and consider their legacy. Bring your walking shoes and a friend! The tour will last approximately one hour and thirty minutes and cover just over a mile. It will end at Tompkins Square Park. Please check in at the front desk at least 15 minutes before the walk is scheduled to begin. This event will be rescheduled in the case of rain.

Tour Leader:

Thomas Enderle was born in Japan to German parents. Trained as a lawyer, he worked for three decades in Hamburg, Germany, as a director and board member of an international company. He is thrilled to now be living in what was once known as Kleindeutschland.
