Glacier Express Scenic Rail Journey 2024/25

A true highlight of a holiday in switzerland.

Scenic views from the Glacier Express

St. Moritz - Chur - Brig - Zermatt

It takes just under 8 hours for the Glacier Express to complete its journey, as you relax in comfort in modern 1st or 2nd class panoramic carriages. The train winds its way up to over 2,000m at the Oberalp Pass, through the unspoilt natural beauty of a landscape of glaciers, ancient forests, rushing mountain streams and valleys, travelling through 91 tunnels and across 291 impressive bridges. The historic section between Thusis and St. Moritz is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Line. You can discover more by clicking here.

The journey can be enjoyed from Zermatt to St. Moritz or vice versa, or you could try the shorter section (4 hours) between Brig and Chur.

Dining on the Glacier Express is a leisurely experience, enjoyed whilst the ever changing scenery slowly passes by the huge windows. Your pre-booked lunch, which is freshly prepared for you in the galley, is served at your seat.

Our suggested two and multi centre itineraries can be changed to fit your requirements with higher grade hotels and upgraded rooms. Other route combinations are also available. Call us on 0800 619 1200 .

Glacier Express in the Rhine Gorge

The Glacier Express can be enjoyed throughout the year. If you would like to travel during the winter and experience the sight of snow on the Alps, we have a few recommendations to help you get the most from your holiday:

*Consider the shorter Brig-Chur journey (or vice versa) during the weeks with the shortest daylight hours. The 4 hour journey takes in fabulous views and lunch is still included. Both resorts are historic towns with plenty of sightseeing.

*Most Zermatt hotels have a 7 night restriction during the winter ski season. If you wish to stay for a shorter period, we can recommend staying in Brig instead.  Zermatt is certainly worth a visit, which you can do as a day trip from Brig, even taking in the Gornergrat railway.

*St. Moritz-Brig is a good option for winter as the whole of the 6½ hour journey is completed in daylight.

*Why not pre-book a Bernina Express day trip during your stay in St. Moritz - you'll enjoy even more spectacular alpine scenery of the UNESCO World Heritage Line.

All panoramic viewing cars in both 1st and 2nd class are air conditioned and offer oversized windows which extend into the roof cove providing all round panoramic views. Along the route, the most important features are described via headphones in English.

First class carriages have 36 places: four-seats or two-seats, with tables either side of a central aisle. Second class carriages have 48 places: four-seats with tables either side of a central aisle.

The Glacier Express is a non-smoking train.

Service staff will take your orders for drinks and lunch, which will all be served to you at your seat. There is also a small bistro with standing tables offering drinks and light snacks. You will find a selection of souvenirs available to buy and you can even send a postcard from the train. Please note that the Glacier Express is now cashless.

You can now enjoy the premium 'Excellence Class' from Glacier Express. With comfortable, guaranteed window seats for the 20 passengers, a dedicated check in desk and a VIP in-carriage bar, this is a fabulous way to enjoy the alpine journey during a special anniversary or birthday celebration. The exclusive carriage has its own concierge, as well as tablets loaded with the Glacier Express 'Bordinfotainment'.

Please take a look at this short video of the Excellence Class experience.

You will be well catered for as you enjoy your scenic journey!

  • Welcome drink from the VIP bar on arrival
  • Superb, seasonal 5 course meal with accompanying wines
  • Tea, coffee and soft drinks throughout the day

Please click here to see the latest Glacier Express timetables.

We will include the cost of the Glacier Express in your tailor-made holiday quotation, including lunch on board and the seat reservation booking fee.

We can create a multi-centre scenic rail holiday which combines the Glacier Express with other famous trains.

From Chur or St. Moritz: travel on the Bernina Express  to Lugano

From Brig: travel on the  Lötschberg Regio Express  to Spiez/Interlaken or regional rail to Domodossola and Centovalli Line  to Locarno

From Zermatt: regional rail to Montreux, with connection on the GoldenPass Express  to Interlaken

Is the Glacier Express worth it? A review!

Wondering if the scenic Swiss train journey, The Glacier Express, is worth it? Looking for an epic experience in Switzerland? The Glacier Express Panorama Train is the most incredible train journey through stunning environments and absolutely worth it!

This blog was in collaboration with Switzerland Tourism and Swiss Travel System. All opinions are our own, we are excited to show you this incredible country!

Where is the Glacier Express Train Switzerland?

The Glacier Express begins in Zermatt and ends in St Moritz! It is an 8 hour, 291km journey if you take the whole trip. You can also choose to get on or off at stops along the way so you do not have to do the whole 8 hours.

How many stops are there on the Glacier Express?

There are approximately 8 stops on the Glacier Express train journey but it does depend on which train you are catching. Below is the time table for 2023

lk tours glacier express

How much does the Glacier Express cost?

We took The Glacier Express from Brig to St Mortiz . We had Swiss Travel Passes and the Glacier Express train is included in them we only had to pay the seat reservation which was 39CHF ($66 AUD) each. Glacier Express seat reservations are mandatory. The price will depend on whether you are on the train for what is considered a long journey like ours or a short journey and the time of year.

Having our Swiss Travel Pass really was fantastic for this trip! The Swiss Travel Pass cost 365 CHF ($626 AUD) for 6 days travel in second class or 580 CHF ($983 AUD) for 6 days travel in first class.

The Glacier Express tickets if travelling from Zermatt to St Moritz would cost 152 CHF ($257 AUD) for second class or 268 CHF ($453AUD) for first class. As the Glacier Express tickets were included in our Swiss Travel Passes we had already paid this amount and also gave us great value for our money! We used our Swiss Travel Passes so much that it really added up to great savings and convenience.

What formats are the seats in?

The seat format varies depending if you are in first or second class.

In second class the seats are in a 4 x 4 format. This means there are 2 bench seats facing a table on each side of the carriage. First class has a 4 x 2 format. A four seat as above and on the other side of the carriage are 2 single seats facing a smaller table. This is where we chose to sit.

How early do you need to book the Glacier Express?

We only booked a week in advance and it was almost sold out on the day we wanted to go. We really wanted to sit in the 2 person seated tables in first class but they were all booked out. Luckily we had some flexibility and booked the last of these type of seats for the following day.

Do you need to purchase food?

There is a food car which has panorama windows if you are looking for a snack. You can purchase a single meal or a 3 course meal which will all be served at your seat.

TRAVEL TIP – we found out that you could take your own food onboard and made ourselves a picnic! More about this below.

Regardless of what you do, you do not have to purchase food if you don’t want it. If you do purchase is at the time of buying the ticket or seat reservation.

lk tours glacier express

What is Excellence Class on the Glacier Express?

The Excellence Class is the best class available on the Glacier Express . It’s a private carriage with 2 x 2 format, only available for the full trip, Zermatt to St Moritz.

The ticket cost (included if you have the Swiss Travel Pass) is 287 CHF. However the mandatory reservation fee for the Excellence Class is much higher at CHF 470 ($794 AUD). This does include some pretty great complementary services such as:

  • Lounge seating with guaranteed window seat
  • Exclusive access to the Glacier Bar
  • Tablet with Board infotainment
  • Concierge as host in the Excellence Class
  • Welcome-Desk & personal check-in on the platform
  • Luggage transport in dedicated lockable sections aboard
  • Coffee, juice, soft drinks
  • Starter plate with Champagne
  • A 5-course regional menu, accompanied by a glass of wine per course
  • Tea Time in the afternoon with goodies
  • Snacks throughout the day available

I really want to do this trip again in Excel l ence Class ! The menu included sounds incredible and I love how each meal is paired with a glass of wine. A meal coming out each hour of the trip is my idea of heaven. Although the seat reservation is more expensive it has gained a place on my bucket list!

Is the Glacier Express worth it?

Yes! The Glacier Express Panorama Train is really really worth it! Although I have heard the point of view-it is expensive, too long and you can just take regular trains. I really don’t agree with this. I mean of course you can…but that isn’t really what it is about.

It is about the experience….

What is the Glacier Express really like?

From the moment the Glacier Express pulls up at the station it feels different, the train itself commands attention. The shiny red exterior with huge panoramic glass windows…you can tell it is not your regular train.

We caught the Gl a cier Express in Brig and although our tickets were for first class we sat in second class. Then we moved to first class in Andermatt as this is where our preferred 2 seat option was available. We were excited to get to see both the second class and first class experience so we could compare!

What is second class like on the Glacier Express?

Second class was great! The carriage was beautiful, with wood panelling and large glass panoramic windows. The seats were comfortable 2 seater bench seats. There was a very upbeat and excited atmosphere. Everyone was chatting happily and taking loads of photos. Meals were delivered, the standard of the service was excellent! Others were opening snacks and food they had brought with them. It was obvious everyone was having a very good time and really enjoying the experience.

Great service on the Glacier Express

What is first class like on the Glacier Express?

At Andermatt we changed to our first class carriage. We could immediately tell the difference. We boarded the first class carriage as lunch was being served. The same level of excellent service that we had seen in second class. Waiters were bringing meals out and serving at the tables in a polite and professional manner. The carriage was as beautiful as the second class. The wooden interior and huge glass windows were the same. The seats were much more comfortable and felt larger. The atmosphere was quite different though. It was quieter and more subdue with only quiet chatter amongst guests.

enjoying the first class carriage on the Glacier Express

To picnic or not to picnic on the Glacier Express!

We sat down and were a little unsure if we had made the right move. Speaking with Swiss Railway we were told it was acceptable to bring our own food onboard. After walking in to the first class carriage we really didn’t feel the same upbeat atmosphere. No one was eating their own food and we did second guess if we should.

Well, sometimes you just have to stick to your plan! We sat down and pulled out our cheeses, proscuitto and wine and settled in for a delicious and fun lunch. A very kind staff member asked if she could help us. We said we were fine we weren’t asked again…I think they could tell we had everything we needed! The staff weren’t worried at all about our picnic, I am so glad we went ahead!

We had our bottle of Australian Penfolds wine, our breads (or gluten free crackers!), cheeses, meats in absolute heaven. A few of the other guests had a little look and honestly I think they were a bit jealous! We had such a great time toasting to the stunning views.

Enjoying Australian Penfolds wine on the Glacier Express

The changing landscapes of the Glacier Express journey

As the Glacier Express travelled along its route we saw beautiful and diverse landscapes from the comfort of our carriage. The journey goes over 219 bridges, 91 tunnels and through everything from lush mountain towns to deep snowy fields.

Of particular note were the Albula Line, the most scenic part of the trip. There are six viaducts, three spiral tunnels and two helical tunnels climbing 400m. Spectacular Landwasser Viaduct, iconic of the Glacier Express, and the Oberalppass climbing to a height of 2033m above sea level!

There are headphones for your use and interesting facts, exciting stories and history are all provided as you pass the locations.

Arriving in St Moritz feels like an achievement! You really do become immersed in the journey and it is sad when it is over.

Beautiful views along the Glacier Express

Would you recommend the Glacier Express Panorama Train/

Yes, we absolutely recommend taking the Glacier Express Train ! It is one of the most beautiful train journeys in the world. It lives up to its reputation easily. If you need any help or have any questions please leave a comment, we are happy to help!

Get active in the adventure capital of Europe - Interlaken

Interlaken sets you up for adventure, walking and sightseeing as you’re at the gateway of the Jungfrau Mountains, surrounded by stunning blue lakes and the impressive snow-capped peaks of the Bernese Oberland. Take a boat cruise on Lake Thun or Brienz, visit the nearby Giessbach waterfalls or head up to the Harder Kulm for the best views over Interlaken and the spectacular mountains in the distance – this is a great spot for sunset.

Our top tips for your time in Interlaken:

Head high into the mountains on the Brienzer Rothorn steam cog railway or take a nostalgic trip up the Schynige Platte (open from 1 July) from Wilderswil for fantastic views and many great walks.

Take a trip to the Top-of-Europe - the Jungfraujoch - for remarkable views of the longest glacier in the Alps, the Aletsch, and surrounding mountains of the Eiger, Jungfrau and Mönch, plus take a trip inside the glacier at the ice palace. Even the journey there is impressive, with routes via either Grindelwald and the Eiger Express cable car, which whizzes you up the mountain beneath the north face of the Eiger. Or travel via Wengen, with spectacular views of the Lauterbrunnen valley – we recommend travelling there one way and back the other to really make the most of the scenery.

Have a prosecco brunch at the Schilthorn above the picturesque car-free town of Mürren – the views up here are really impressive and you can enjoy them from the revolving restaurant, prosecco in-hand. Further down the mountain, the thrill walk at Birg offers the perfect photo opportunity and the quiet villages of Mürren and Gimmelwald are lovely to stroll around.

Adventure lovers will find plenty to do in Interlaken, from speed-boat trips to white water rafting or canyoning. If you’re after a calmer trip out on the water, relax and enjoy a lunchtime boat cruise or hire a paddleboard or kayak for the afternoon.

Find Out More About Interlaken

Visit the Matterhorn village of Zermatt

With nearly 400 kilometres of marked routes, Zermatt’s walking area is huge - opened up by multiple mountain lifts. The pre-bookable Peak Pass gives access to all lifts and opens up the vast walking area above this world-famous town – plus it includes entry to the Glacier Palace and travel on the Gornergrat.

Our top tips for your time in Zermatt:

For the best views of the Matterhorn, a trip up the historic Gornergrat railway is a must. Not far from the top of the lift is the Riffelsee where you can get the ultimate mirror reflection of the Matterhorn on a calm day. There are plenty of lovely walking options up here too.

Head up high to the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise, where you can visit the ice palace, enjoy spectacular views and take a trip on the new Matterhorn Alpine Crossing over into Italy.

There are lots of adventurous activities in Zermatt too – hire a mountain bike for the day and explore on two wheels, or try some via feratta.

If you’re in Zermatt over a Monday or a Friday, why not join one of our Inghams guided walks? Explore some of Zermatt’s best scenery in the company of other Inghams guests and a professional local guide – and the best bit is, there’s no extra cost to join – add the walk to your holiday at the time of booking.

Visit Europe’s highest alpine garden at 2,800 metres altitude. The Alpine Garden is on the Gornergrat, directly below the Rotenboden station and displays around 150 species of plants.

Glacier Express Panoramic Train

Embark on the crowning highlight of your holiday - a full day of travel on board the famous Glacier Express Panoramic Train as you make your way to Filisur (approx. seven to eight hours) where change of train is required for additional 25-minute journey to Davos. This journey on the ‘slowest express train in the world’ takes you past dramatic glaciers, over spectacular viaducts, and through unspoilt mountain forests and valleys to the charming canton of Graubünden.

Hike in the Graubünden region and explore the city of Davos

There are around 700 kilometres of marked walking routes in the beautiful Davos and Klosters region, offering a fantastic range of routes with something to suit everyone. You can also hop on a bike and explore on two wheels or relax in the Davos wellness centre. There’s plenty of culture here too, with museums to visit and various festivals throughout the summer.

Our top tips for your time in Davos:

Discover the picturesque Schlappin valley near Klosters and traditional Berghaus Erika mountain hut which has stunning views from the terrace. Take a stroll along the stream path and spot wild flowers in the most peaceful surroundings.

Take the mountain railway to Schatzalp and visit the Alpinum botanical garden with over 5,000 varieties of plants including a huge collection of Edelweiss.

Visit the Zügenschlucht Gorge, with waterfalls, steep rock faces and impressive bridges, this is a great day out for walkers and rail enthusiasts. While you’re there, why not visit the Graubünden Mining Museum too.

Make your own chocolate at the Confiserie Schneider – Switzerland is famous for its chocolate and here you can learn all about the manufacturing process, and make your own chocolate bar – the ultimate gift to take home.

Take a paddleboard on Lake Davos and enjoy the scenery from the water, or walk the panorama path above Davos – the name gives the game away – you can expect amazing views from this route which goes from the top of the Parsenn lift from Davos to the Gotschna cable-car from Klosters.

The Glacier Express—Switzerland’s most famous train journey—has recently launched Excellence Class, a premium carriage offering the most exclusive way to experience the scenic eight-hour ride between Zermatt and St. Moritz. Travelers in Excellence Class can enjoy a multicourse gourmet meal, a private cocktail bar and views of the breathtaking Alpine landscapes out huge windows.

Rather than covering the whole Glacier Express route in one day, we recommend breaking the journey into a leisurely two-day experience with an overnight in Andermatt. ‘Glacier’s Reds’ explores history of park’s iconic tour bus

A red bus heads into the East Side Tunnel in Glacier National Park. (Hungry Horse News FILE)

Ray Djuff dove into the history of Glacier National Park’s historic red buses and found that their continued existence is owed to determined people who wanted to see the iconic fleet drive the Going-to-the-Sun Road for years to come.

“Something I mentioned throughout the book is that if it weren't for fate and chance, those buses would have been taken off the road numerous times,” Djuff said.

Djuff’s newest book “Glacier’s Reds — The quest to save the park’s historic buses” takes a look at how the bus tours became a staple in Glacier National Park, as well as the many close calls that nearly took them out of commission.

Glacier’s red buses have been cruising roads in the park in some capacity since 1914, when Roe Emery and Walter White of the Cleveland-based White Motor Company began transporting people in the park. The fleet of 33 buses is “widely considered to be the oldest touring fleet of vehicles anywhere in the world,” according to Xanterra’s website, park vendor and current owner of the Red Bus Tours.

Djuff said one of the most important moments in the history of the jammer bus was what he calls “the crisis of 1999.” He is referring to a time when the entire fleet of red buses had to be taken off the road due to safety.

“The safety issues were related to new engines and upgrades that were installed in 1989 and 1990,” Djuff said. “They were poorly engineered, and unfortunately, over a period of a decade came to cause irreparable harm to the buses, particularly the frames and the suspension.”

The question then became “how could they be fixed?” he said. It was another instance of fate throughout the bus's history that led to the eventual solution — a Ford engineer would befriend one of the fleet’s mechanics. Dennis Schwecke was a Great Falls resident who decided to stop by their shop and strike up a conversation about the iconic buses.

“He simply popped in one day to talk about the buses because he was that interested in them, and he started talking to Larry Hegg, a mechanic, and the two became acquainted,” Djuff said.  “Schwecke really helped to bring Ford into the project, which did the rebuild on the buses to get them back on the road.”

He said it was advantageous for Ford to get involved with the project, as the corporation was looking to showcase its new clean burning fuel technology.

It’s one of many moments in “Glacier’s Reds” that tells the tale of red bus lovers fighting to keep the vehicles on the road. During the writing and research process for the book, Djuff encountered many people whose lives were touched in some way by the buses.

Djuff said his primary research started by going to museums and archives to get original documents about the buses, some of which were in St. Paul, Minnesota, where the Great Northern Railway headquarters was based at one time. He also traveled to Wyoming, where he studied the papers of Howard Hays, who became president of the bus company in 1927. He also frequented the Glacier National Park archives office and is a member of the Glacier Park Foundation, a group of former concession workers. He said by talking and forming friendships with former red bus drivers, he was able to glean their stories of their time on the Sun Road.

Djuff is a retired Calgary journalist who is also a co-author of “Glacier’s Historic Hotels and Chalets: View With a Room,” author of “High on a Windy Hill —The Story of the Prince of Wales Hotel,” and co-editor of “Glacier from the Inside Out.”

“Glacier’s Reds — The quest to save the park’s historic buses” is available online on Amazon.com and is at many local bookstores, including park stores operated by the Glacier National Park Conservancy.

FAQ Frequently Asked Questions

Can i book my journey on the glacier express in advance.

Yes and advance booking is highly recommended, especially in the busy summer and winter seasons when demand is particularly high. Packages can easily be booked online or via one of our travel experts.

What is the best time of year to travel on the Glacier Express?

This depends on your personal preferences:

  • Winter (December to March) : Winter journeys offer spectacular views of snow-covered landscapes and mountain peaks. The perfect time of year for winter sports enthusiasts and those that enjoy winter Alpine scenery to travel.
  • Spring (April to June) : Spring sees the snow melt and nature awaken and bloom. Daylight hours increase and views are often clearer.
  • Summer (July to August) : Summer travellers can enjoy warm weather and long days. A great time for hiking and experiencing the green Alpine valleys in all their splendour but also the busiest season for tourists.
  • Autumn (September to November) : Autumn sees the landscape transformed with glorious colours and a tranquil atmosphere.

Each season has its own special charm. While winter offers magical snowy landscapes, summer beckons with green valleys and perfect hiking opportunities. Spring and autumn can be quieter travel periods and each have their own scenic beauty.

Can I eat onboard the Glacier Express?

The Glacier Express offers various catering options, depending on the class of service booked.

First and Second Class : Whether you choose the Menu of the Day or from the A la Carte selection, your freshly prepared meal will be served directly at your seat. Please note that catering is not included in the price of your seat reservation. To ensure that your dining experience is as smooth as your journey, we recommend pre-booking a menu – either the dish of the day or a 3-Course option – when confirming your trip.

Excellence Class : The culinary experience is an integral part of the journey. Here, guests are served a multi-course gourmet meal, included in the price of the reservation. Excellence Class also offers an exclusive fine wine and beverage service.

Can I travel with children on the Glacier Express?

The journey is suitable for passengers of all ages, including families with children but please do note the following important points:

  • Tickets:  Children can benefit from reduced fares, depending on their age. Please contact our travel experts for more specific information about your booking.
  • Entertainment and Activities:  Remember that the journey is up to 8 hours therefore you may wish to bring books or games to keep your children occupied.
  • Snacks and Refreshments: There are catering options provided on the Glacier Express but it is nevertheless a good idea to bring plenty of snacks and drinks for your children.

Is the Glacier Express wheelchair accessible?

Yes, the Glacier Express is wheelchair accessible. The train has designated wheelchair spaces and accessible toilets in certain carriages. Please contact one of our travel consultants directly to organise your journey.

What is the difference between 1st and 2nd class on the Glacier Express?

The main differences between the classes are the comfort level and seating arrangements. In 1st class, passengers enjoy larger, more comfortable seats with more legroom and space for luggage. There are fewer places per row, offering more privacy. The seating arrangement in 1st class is usually 2+1, meaning two seats to one side of the aisle and one on the other. In 2nd class, there are usually two seats on either side of the aisle, offering less space and privacy. Although 2nd class seats are still comfortable, they are not as spacious as those in 1st class. Both classes offer access to the on-board catering service.

Excellence Class is the luxury option, offering the highest level of comfort and service. The seating arrangement is very generous, with only 20 seats in the entire carriage. A gourmet catering service, complete with a multi-course menu, is included, as are access to an exclusive bar-lounge area, a personal concierge service and onboard entertainment.
