WHAT TO EXPECT

Explore Polynesia’s only navigable stream on our fully equipped, stable, comfortable, and quality single, double, and triple kayaks.  On your kayak adventure, you meander 2 miles upstream, where you first pass an old Hawaiian Village. Secure your kayak at an island in the north fork and continue your expedition on foot through the pristine canyons and tropical rainforest of the Wailua River Valley interior to Uluwehi Waterfalls.

No previous experience is necessary. There is usually little or no current occurring. Paddling upstream can actually be easier than downstream as you are assisted by a gentle tradewind blowing mauka (inland) toward the mountains.

Join us for the best-valued activity on one of Kauai’s top attractions. Over a five-hour period, you paddle the placid warm waters of Wailua, hike through a lush rainforest, and swim at a beautiful waterfall. Our family-run business keeps your family in mind with top-quality equipment at affordable prices.

Wailua means spirit. The area where Kayak Wailua is located was once known as Wailua Nui Hoana (Great Sacred Wailua).

OVER 3,100 FIVE-STAR REVIEWS ON TRIPADVISOR

kayak tours in kauai hawaii

The falls were magical, refreshing, and beautiful. We particularly appreciated the off-site parking, the comfortable kayak backrests, and the no-frills (i.e. bring your own) lunch approach. This was an excellent value and great way to appreciate an aspect of the island we hadn't previously seen.

This was the best hike/kayak trip that I have ever attended. Our guide Terada was amazing in showing us everything and explaining everything to us. It was my birthday and she truly made it so much fun. She was also extremely helpful with my entire group during the entire trip. I would recommend her to anyone that comes to this island. Again, this adventure and Terada were both amazing. I definitely plan on doing this again.

This was a memorable day. We had a great guide, who was really knowledgable about the area and fun as well. It's an easy paddle, followed by a pretty long walk with muddy sections, so bring shoes that you don't mind getting dirty. Truly spectacular, and one of the highlights of our trip.

Dan was our very knowledgeable guide and was extremely helpful. He talked about the area history and gave us some interesting information regarding native species, damage from the hurricane and other details. He ensured that we all had a walking stick and made sure we were all safe on the trail. You can tell Dan really cares for the land and its wildlife. I would highly recommend Dan and Kayak Wailua.

We aren't experienced kayakers, but you do not have to be. The kayak was easy and relaxing. The hike had a few slippery places and if you have to watch out or your might twist your ankle. If you have walking issues don't do the hike.

Great company. Owners are very nice and worked with us. Facility and kayaks are in great shape. Definitely recommend and will book again!

This was one of the best experiences we’ve had during our week on Kauai. The hike to the falls was challenging but well worth the effort. Our guide, Lisa, did a great job. She was extremely knowledgeable and it was evident that the safety of her guests was her top priority. We’ll recommend this trip to all our friends.

Customer Feedback

three friends jumping

This excursion was the HIGHLIGHT of our whole trip! Seriously a 'Bucket List" experience! We went to Kauai to specifically kayak this coast line. Annie...Where do I begin? She was the MOST positive, engaging, charismatic host. She truly had our best interest at heart. She was encouraging and compassionate, however she also let us know if we needed to be paired with others, she would over-ride our 'plan' but since we all worked well together, everyone just had the BEST DAY EVER!!

david and eric clevin

A huge mahalo to the group at Napali Kayak! We had a blast but more so gained an experience full of memories and feelings that will last a lifetime. This was such an adventure. The intense challenge was part of the 5 stars for us. We thought the staff did a tremendous job setting us up for expectations and performance out there in the open ocean. Annie's serious pep talk and dire warnings fired me up like I was going into battle, and I guess we sort of did battle our way through the most beautiful coastline in the world.

kelsea D

The whole crew at Napali Kayak are great, they are super friendly even bright and early before a long day on the water. I was lucky enough to have Captain Annie take us on the epic journey down the remarkable Napali Coast. he jewel of the trip of course was Kalalau, aka garden of eden. The most beautiful place i have ever seen. Fully in love and absolutely would paddle with this company again! Very professional, caring and amazing staff!!!!

Paddling through the water near the Na Pali Coast

We did the 17miles kayak day trip and it was worth every cent we spent! Annie and Nick were great guides, taking care of everything and assuring that we had a good time. It is a pretty long day out and be prepared for a sometimes uncomfortable seating position and some waves. But if you make use of the little breaks in between to stretch your legs and jump into the water, you'll be fine! And even if getting back into the kayak seems impossible to do, it is in fact not that hard. It was a great day and the coolest way to see the napali coast, and dolphins, and beautiful beaches! Highly recommended!

The adventure of a lifetime begins at the end of the road.

Napali Kayak invites you to join us for a sea-kayaking adventure along the emerald cliffs of Kauai’s Na Pali Coast.

We use the highest quality sit-on-top tour kayaks with rudders, Werner paddles and cozy seat backs. Most importantly, we specialize in fun! We also have the North Shore’s highest quality, lowest priced kayak rentals.

Paddle and Hike in the Wailua River Area

Ruffin’ It Video!

The first quarter and the last quarter of the hiking trail have uneven surfaces with the challenges of muddy and slippery rocks, and crossing of streams. The new boardwalk covers about 70% of some of the most slippery and difficult parts of the trail.

*This five-hour guided tour is a wonderful waterfall adventure for the active family, combining idyllic paddling on the Wailua River and at times, depending on weather conditions,  a moderate to challenging hike to a remote bridal-veil waterfall.

The Wailua River became the center of activity for early Hawaiians and is known as one of Hawaii’s two most sacred places.

At night, it is said that one can still hear ancient drums thunder in concert with the nearby surf.

The trail leading to our sacred waterfall is a beautiful “greenhouse” where flowers, brooks and ferns abound. Swim by the waterfall.

The early Polynesian culture is represented here, steeped in a colorful past, rich with rock-wall terracing, legends and lore.

The setting for this jaunt is tranquil and tropical, the pace is unhurried. We delight in sharing the peaceful, pastoral existence of ancient Hawaii with you.

Bird watch for a night heron or coot.

Swim in the pools or stream leading from the falls (we don’t recommend swimming actually under Uluwehi waterfall due to falling rocks).

Come share the life and natural history of this mystical land and enjoy its great quiet with us!

Nevertheless, we feel our guides will help you enjoy this tour for the paddle, serenity, and scenery you will stumble upon as you discover and share with many others, one of the best-kept known secrets of Kaua’i!

Embrace the Mud!

Trail can be muddy any time of the year make sure children and adults are up to the challenging potential of a slip and slide on the trail!

The trail can be hazardous for the ill-prepared and insist on clients availing themselves of our walking sticks.

History of the Wailua River

The sacred Wailua was the land of Ali’i (kings) and was the epicenter of royal power on the island. This region hosted the political, religious and social centers of Kauai’s chiefs.  Therefore it was deemed kapu (forbidden) for anyone to enter if they were not of royal descent. The Wailua Complex of Heiaus is a National Historic Landmark, located on the hillside above the Wailua River.

We had a fantastic experience on the kayak trip with our guide Levi. He was very knowledgeable and made it a lot of fun. We had an amazing experience. Levi made us all feel very comfortable and like Ohana. Highly recommend this tour and if you are lucky enough to get Levi that is a huge bonus. The hike was beautiful and the river kayaking was pretty easy.

Ryker was our guide and he was great! Taught us what to do and was very knowledgeable. This is a super fun experience for 2 people or a group! Well worth the cost!

The flyline zipline was amazing. My wife was afraid at first but the guides were amazing and made us feel safe. Cayman did an amazing job. He was very engaging. The other 2 guides were amazing as well. Great history telling of the ranch. Very informative. I would highly recommend this to anyone. Great job guys 👏

It was a nice day. Ryker, the guide, made the trip complete. He was funny, knows a lot of the nature and was a real host. The trip was nice, swimming at the waterfall was great. Just a fantastic day.

We had the BEST ziplining experience with this Outfitters. The ranch was gorgeous!!! Keegan was knowledgeable and shared so much of the history of Kipu Ranch with us. We did the Adrenaline Tour and had a blast! Would definitely recommend.

We experienced a beautiful, peaceful, and informative Hidden Valley Falls kayak adventure with our amazing guide Sarah! I'll be requesting her tours the next time we visit Kauai. She was so much fun to have as a lead, very informative, funny, and kind. Thank you, Sarah! Outfitters Kauai is well organized and professional, with every detail of the trip nailed down to a tee. Mahalo!

Great looong ride, time to look around. Both hosts, Riker and Sareh, were great. The “Superman” rig was a little scary during prep and take off, but really felt like flying on the ride. Now I wish Iʻd done a longer tour!

We were on a cruise and this was by far the best excursion we had the whole 10 days. Even if not on a cruise would be an awesome day. We did five zip lines, the last of which was unreal. Then a chance to cool off in a bamboo pool with zip line and jumping in. We had a great meal at the end. Everyone agreed we would come here again.

Fun kayak activity. Well organized, well led and unusual stops (Pirates of the Caribbean, Raiders of the Lost Ark shooting locations).

Amazing experience! Mitch was a great guide with lots of local knowledge! Our family of five enjoyed the kayaking followed by hiking to a waterfall. The pace was relaxed and enjoyable. Would definitely repeat this adventure!

Definitely worth it! We did the Kipu Safari and My kids haven't stopped talking about how dope it was! The guides were very knowledgeable and fun. At no point during the adventure did I feel like there was anything to worry about. My kids range from 10-15yrs old so it's hard to find something that they all get excited about doing, but this definitely checked all their boxes! If Kayaking, zip lining and swimming at private spots sounds like a great time, this is the tour for you!

This was our 8th zip tour with you and today was the best. Mahalo Kaman and Ben for your amazing hospitality and storytelling. Until next time y'all!

My husband and I experienced Outfitters Kauai over 10 years ago and today we were able to bring our 2 boys to the same adventure. It was amazing now as it was back then. Our guides were knowledgable, fun and always put safety first. Our guide Cannon was great! Thank you for another incredible experience!

Brooks and Mitch were excellent guides! They ordered up rainbows, pods of spinner dolphins, cruising swells to make the paddling easy. They gave us great directions for launching and paddling in. We enjoyed great stories and always felt safe in experienced hands. We loved our kayak trip! Mahalo Na Pali kayak!!

We had such a great day on the water yesterday with Mitch and David (our guides). Incredible scenery, amazing sea cave visits only possible by kayak, nice lunch. Just know that this trip is a very full day (6am-8pm for us), and it's not for the faint-hearted / we had big swells and choppy waters for a big part of the morning. But still a great time and we made friends with the other attendees!

Had a blast. Seas were a bit rough but guides were terrific and had a great time. would 10 / 10 recommend

All day adventure, pretty epic day, but well worth the effort. Aside from padding all day. The historical stories were cool, and kayaking into the caves was amazing. Worth doing, but don't kid yourself this is a big physical effort.

Seems like they delete their 1 star reviews, so I'll try again. I'm sure all the '5 stars' are just friends and family..Ivan was one of the rudest people my family and I have ever had to deal with. Very belittling and impatient and bossy. He rubbed me the wrong way during the check in process in the morning and he just got worse as the day went on. The trip itself is very beautiful but the crew will leave you behind and you're pretty much guaranteed to flip over multiple times along the way. One flip of my uncle and cousin and they lost all their water for the trip because the clips didn't work. The equipment is overly used to say the least and the life jacket smelled of BO which was making me nauseous. On paper, this seemed like the trip of a lifetime, but it was far from it! Save your money and to the tubing in the caves or rum tour or anything but this! You'll thank me later.

Terrible!!!! Haven't had such a bad experience in along time! Our vacation was going amazing! Every tour and place we went to had 5 star customer service and we were really excited for this tour! We arrived early and were filling out the waiver. I filled out one section and my dad went to fill out the bottom. He put cursive where he was supposed to print his name (he's dyslexic and embarrassed of it) the guy in charge (Ivan) yelled at him and crumpled the paper and through it away. Told him he should of brought his reading glasses and to fill it out again. My dad does it right the second time and Ivan yells at him he did it wrong again and crumpled up and threw away the next paper. I go over after seeing my dad struggling and being yelled at and he fills it out the same way and it's all of a sudden ok. So we are off to a rough start but we were still excited for the trip and let it go. We get to the place and unload kayaks and supplies. Everything was rushed and Ivan was back to his snappy, rude ways. We were at this point told that we are guaranteed to flip multiple times and that we have until the first mile stop to decide if we are down for the whole experience. We get a quick crash course on the rules and instructions for the day. The instructors, Annie and Austin were to lead and follow us for the day. They should never allow 'beginner' kayakers let alone people who have kayaked recreationally. I soon realized it was going to be a lot more difficult than planned as my dad and I were sharing a kayak and the instructor took off. The whole first mile I did not feel safe or that if anything were to happen that the instructors would even be able to help us. After the mile 4 of us in our group decided to tap out. Here we meet Ivan again. He doesn't hesitate to belittle us and say he's never had this many people quit and that now our sandwiches will be enough for the people who kept going to have two. We drag our kayaks up and he tells us we need to hurry because he's parked where he isn't supposed to be...he looks up to the lifeguards who had been friendly to us as well and says ' you guys ever seen this many people quit at once?' . I wished at this point that we'd just kept paddling so we didn't have to deal with his rudeness anymore! We go to wash the sand off our feet because he didn't want us 'dirtying' his van. As we walk by we hear 'Mayday!! Mayday!!' Ivan is without his walkie and the crew members were trying to contact him for help. We go and tell him his walkie is going off and they're yelling 'Mayday' he said they don't do that and went to the van and sure enough ... 'mayday!' My uncle and cousin who were pressing on had flipped twice and my cousins water for the day had broke free and my uncle couldn't get back in the kayak on his own. He's in great shape just over 6ft tall so he needed help. He said he was yelling to Austin(one of the guides) to help him and Austin was yelling at him to just get n the boat... he finally realized my uncle wasn't 'pretending' and came over and helped him back in. They begged him to be able to turn around and quit. They paddled back and Ivan say them and started with his rude antics again saying they shouldn't of continued and that they didn't have a clue of what they were doing. They aren't beginners and they allow beginners on this trip... I just don't get it. I'm not sure how this happened 5stars minus for the views and the experience minus the staff. We didn't get our money back or the pictures of us that were part of the tour. The whole drive back Ivan was having road rage with multiple drivers. He recommended us to do easier paddles in the bay for beginners at this point. We were done. My dad was so upset about the experience and my uncle was very disappointed as well. I can't believe they let Ivan stay there and be the 'face' of the company. Would of been nice to get a refund but also we just wanted to not send Ivan over the top anymore than he was. The experience gave us a lot to talk about, but nothing positive. I'm thinking most these posts are their family to help with reviews. Hoping people read this entire review and don't make the same mistake we did! Mahalo!

Props to Ivan, Ahja(sp?), Mitch, and Matty. Was a little nervous going in, but we paddled the coast safely and had plenty of time to take it in and take a dip. Why spend your money on a big boat or copter zipping by when you can immerse yourself in the water and interact with nature. Thanks for a great time, highly recommend if you're on the fence (you can do it)!

Napali Kayak is THE place to go for Na Pali Coast kayaking tours! Seriously: not only do Ivan and Josh care about making your kayak adventure the best experience possible, but they really want to tailor it as much to your needs as plausible (difficult, at best, for a family of four from Chicago!). It's also clear that they really care about Kaua'i, and honoring the beautiful paradise that the Garden Island is. Napoli Kayak has been in business for almost 20 years; through the thick and the thin - they're reliable, responsive and responsible. Napali Kayak should be your first choice for kayaking tours / rental in Kaua'i!

What a wonderful adventure. The weather was perfect and we got to see all the awesome caves. It is a long day, and isn't for the faint of heart.... take anti nausea meds... it helped alot. The crew, I'm not sure if we have ever met better people. They were so helpful nice...and even funny. They made the 17 mile paddle interesting and fun. This was a bucket list item for my husband and me, lifelong kayakers...this was a level up for sure for us. Beautiful scenery and funny Dad Jokes along the way made this a great day. Highly recommend this team if you are choosing to adventure in kayak on the Napali Coast.

Our family of 6 had an amazing time on the Napali Coast Kayak trip. Sadie and Mitch were our guides and Sadie told us all the stories about the various caves, Hawaiian history and made it a fun 17 mi trek. We would highly recommend this experience for any adventurous family/individuals. Memories for a lifetime

Spent the day with Sadie and Mitch from Napali Kayak doing a father and daughter trip. They were awesome guides. Never felt unsafe, both were excellent with the history of the ancient Hawaiians, and both provided an excellent tour of the many caves that we explored. The scenery was spectacular. Definitely recommend it to all who have a love for exploring and a desire for an epic adventure. Mahalo Gene and Gigi Fischer

10 Best Kauai Waterfalls: how to see them & where to swim

The rugged and unspoiled island of Kauai is a paradise for nature lovers. In addition to lush rainforests, sprawling canyons, and jagged coastal cliffs, the island is also home to quite a few dramatic waterfalls.

Some can be easily reached by car (with a convenient parking area), which is great for pit stops and quick visits. However, others require a bit more effort to reach, whether it’s a hike through the jungle, a kayak expedition up a river, or a helicopter ride over the valley.

Whatever you’re looking for, Kauai has a waterfall that is guaranteed to make your trip to the Garden Isle memorable!

Here are our favorite waterfalls and how to see them: We love going to Secret Falls on this Wailua River Kayak tour as this is the best waterfall for swimming! If you’re looking for stunning hikes with waterfall rewards be sure to check out our friend Jeremiah’s hiking tours . He can take you all over the island, including to lesser-known falls! If you do anything while you’re visiting Kauai, make sure you see the Napali Coast by boat . This coastline is breathtaking by itself and it has several waterfalls! To my hardcore waterfall and/or Jurassic Park lovers, hop on this helicopter tour to see the unbelievable 400ft Manawaiopuna Falls (aka Jurassic Falls), and ask about landing at the base!

Kauai Waterfall FAQs

What is the best waterfall for swimming in kauai.

If you want to swim in a waterfall, book a tour to visit Secret Falls (Uluwehi Falls). It’s accessible by a 2-mile kayak trip and a 1.5-mile jungle trek, but the pools are beautiful and worth the effort.

What are the most accessible waterfalls to visit on Kauai?

You don’t have to take a full-day hiking trip to see some of Kauai’s best waterfalls. Wailua Falls, Opaekaa Falls, and Red Dirt Falls are all easily accessible by car. You can park on the side of the road and take a few steps to the waterfall viewpoint. Read on for more details on these three Kauai waterfalls.

What Kauai Waterfalls are accessible only with a tour?

Kauai is a wild and rugged place, with 70% of the island inaccessible by car. Therefore, several waterfalls, including many on the Napali Coast, can only be accessed with a licensed tour guide (either by boat, helicopter, or plane).

Besides the ones along the Napali Coast, several other waterfalls are remote or situated on private lands. For example, Manawaiopuna Falls (Jurassic Falls) can only be reached via helicopter, while Kahili Falls must be visited with a licensed guide.

Swimming Safely at the Best Kauai Waterfalls

Before you make the trip to one of the best Kauai waterfalls, there are a few things to keep in mind. Here are a couple of questions about swimming and exploring waterfalls in Hawaii that we have received over the years.

Leptospirosis in Kauai Waterfalls

Leptospirosis is a rare but serious bacterial disease that can be picked up by swimming in contaminated water in a waterfall. However, we’ve spent years in Hawaii, swimming in different streams and rivers on all the islands, and have never caught anything. We’ve also talked with tour guides, swapped stories with locals, and never heard of anyone having leptospirosis.

But to be on the safe side, you should avoid drinking the water or swimming in waterfalls with open cuts. If you are experiencing symptoms of leptospirosis (muscle aches, fever, jaundice, vomiting, etc.), seek medical care immediately.

Kauai waterfalls warning signs

Waterfall Safety

Swimming in Kauai waterfalls does not come without its risks. Even in busy places where swimming is allowed, you should always exercise extreme caution if you plan to go for a dip.

Here are a couple of safety tips to keep in mind when swimming in a waterfall:

  • Avoid swimming or standing directly under the falling water. While this is the most thrilling part of swimming in a waterfall, there is a risk that rocks and other debris can fall without warning.
  • If you want to jump into the pool, check the swimming hole for any rocks beforehand. If you aren’t sure of where to jump in and land safely, do not risk it.
  • Waterfall conditions can change without warning. Although it may be sunny where you plan to swim, it can storm or rain further up the mountain. This could cause flash floods that can make swimming more dangerous. Therefore, check the weather conditions, especially during the wet season in the winter, before going in. If any flash flood warnings are issued, steer clear.
  • Do not climb up on the rock face or along the ridge of a waterfall, as slipping, tripping, or falling can be very dangerous!

Uluwehi Falls kauai waterfall safety

Visiting other islands, too? Don’t miss those waterfalls: Maui Waterfalls Big Island Waterfalls Oahu Waterfalls

1. Wailua Falls

Kauai Waterfalls Wailua Falls

If you’ve ever seen the TV show Fantasy Island (or at least the opening credits ), you’ll recognize Wailua Falls. It can look strikingly different depending on how much water cascades down when you visit.

This stunning waterfall is located in Wailua River State Park, just a short 4-mile drive up Route 583 from Lihue. And because the overlook is right on the road (no hiking required!), it’s worth the short detour if you’re near Lihue.

The views of the falls are pretty spectacular, although don’t hop over the railing to trek down to the pool. While some people do this to go swimming, trespassing causes erosion, and this is not a safe place to swim. Please respect the closed-off area and the ‘aina (land) by staying at the observation area.

Parking at Wailua Falls is relatively easy, as a medium-sized parking lot is at the end of the road. It can fill up quickly, but as it’s a quick stopover, people don’t usually stay here for too long.

  • Waterfall height: 80 feet (which is heavily debated as some claim its height is 173 feet)
  • Swimming Hole: No
  • Restrooms: No
  • Ease of Access: Easy
  • Distance from the Trailhead: Directly by the road
  • Directions to Parking: Click here

2. Opaekaa Falls near Kapa’a

Kauai Waterfalls - Opaekaa Falls view point.

Opaekaa Falls is one of those things you have to see when visiting Kapa’a and the eastern side of Kauai. You can park at the wayside park and walk to the observation platform for pictures. The park and the observation area make this one of the most accessible waterfalls on the island. On the downside, you’re a reasonable distance from the falls, so this isn’t a spot to hike or swim.

While parked at the wayside park, you can visit the Wailua River Overlook for stunning views of the Wailua River. There are also picnic tables and restrooms so that you can relax here.

Or, drive back down the mountain about a quarter of a mile to the sacred Poliahu Heiau (temple).

Check out the video below for views of this waterfall, and more to do around Kapa’a and things to do in Poipu !

  • Waterfall height: 151 feet
  • Restrooms: Yes
  • Distance from the Trailhead: Directly in the parking lot

3. Secret Falls on Wailua River

Getting to Secret Falls (Uluwehi Falls) can be quite an adventure. It’s located on the Wailua River and only accessible from the water! After a two-mile trek up the Class 0 river, you’ll also need to hike through the jungle for roughly 1.5 miles to reach the falls. It’s a moderate hike, which can be muddy sometimes, but our 4-year-old did it and loved exploring the jungle trail.

While you can rent a kayak for this trip alone, we strongly suggest booking a local guide, as they take care of everything. We did this kayak, hiking, and waterfall swim guided tour and had a blast as it combined three different activities on one trip. You can check out the video of our experience below!

But despite its name, this waterfall is anything but secret. It’s one of the more popular waterfalls on Kauai, so be prepared to share the swimming hole with others. But while it can be crowded, it’s still a beautiful place to swim and cool off after your jungle trek!

After your return, stay for the Smith Family Luau to keep the festivities going! You’ll be treated to a gourmet buffet dinner, an exhilarating show, and a narrated tram ride across the sacred Wailua River Valley.

  • Waterfall height: 120 feet
  • Swimming Hole: Yes
  • Cost: Free to visit, but you must rent kayak equipment or go with a tour
  • Ease of Access: Moderate
  • Distance from the Trailhead: 2-mile kayak and 1.5-mile hike

Uluwehi Falls kauai waterfall hike

4. Hanakapiʻai Falls on the Napali Coast

If you’re up for a challenge, then make sure to add a hike to Hanakapiʻai Falls to your Kauai itinerary! This beautiful 300-foot waterfall is located in Haʻena State Park on the rugged Napali Coast, which is easily one of the most scenic parts of the island. But since it’s part of a state park, a permit is required to visit.

I visited this waterfall in my 20s, doing the entire 22-mile out-and-back Kalalau Trail. However, you can reach the falls with a shorter and more manageable 8-mile hike from the start of the trail. This route takes you past the famous Hanakapiʻai Beach and then inland, where you will hike to the falls.

The trail is somewhat difficult because it crosses unmaintained and rocky terrain. We also don’t suggest hiking in the winter, as falling rocks and flash floods can make the journey dangerous. Being on the beach is also not advised during this time due to the high surf, rogue waves, and strong currents.

  • Waterfall height: 300 feet
  • Cost: $5 (entry permit), $10 (parking), $40 (shuttle + entry)
  • Ease of Access: Difficult
  • Distance from the Trailhead: 2 miles

5. Napali Coast Waterfalls

Kauai Waterfalls along the Napali Coast

In our opinion, the best Kauai waterfalls can be found along the Napali Coast. But as we mentioned earlier, 70% of Kauai is inaccessible by car, so you’ll need to be prepared to do some adventuring if you want to go waterfall chasing in this area.

Hiking the Kalalau Trail can lead to some beautiful falls and pools, but it’s long, steep, and not very beginner—or family-friendly. You can always book a helicopter or airplane tour instead, but these can be quite expensive.

We think the best (and cheapest) way to see the waterfalls on the Napali coast is with a boat tour. The views of the cliffs are jaw-droppingly beautiful from the water, and you’ll be able to get close to many of the falls (some boats will even dip their bow under them so you can get wet!).

Head out on one of our favorite Napali Coast Tours to check out the waterfalls below:

  • Paaiki Falls
  • Ho’ole’a Falls
  • Waiahuakua Fall (although this depends on tide conditions. Access is also possible by booking a rafting tour).
  • Pirates Cave Waterfall (also accessible on a rafting tour)

6. Manawaiopuna Falls (Jurassic Falls)

The 400-foot Manawaiopuna Falls is one of the most stunning sights in Kauai. As its name implies, it was used for several scenes in the Jurassic Park films, making it a must-see for nature lovers and movie buffs alike.

Movie buffs will love these tours: Kauai Movie and TV Tour to Scenic Hanalei Waterfall Triple Trail UTV Expedition (private waterfall) Ultimate Kauai Off-Road Ranch Tour

The only way to visit Manawaiopuna Falls is on a local Kauai helicopter tour , as it’s completely inaccessible by foot. Not only will you get to see the falls from above, but many tours will also land at the base so that you can explore the area up close.

  • Waterfall height: 400 feet
  • Cost: Requires helicopter tour
  • Ease of Access: Difficult (only because you have to book a helicopter tour!)
  • Distance from the Trailhead: Direct access from helicopter

7. Mountain Tubing Adventure Down a Waterfall

kayak tours in kauai hawaii

If you’re looking for a fun way to see Kauai, this mountain tubing experience is it! This adventure includes a ride through the jungle with an entertaining guide and a tube float down a 100-year-old, hand-dug plantation canal system. You’ll navigate through dark tunnels and down little waterfalls, all while seeing the beautiful, lush landscapes of the Kauai countryside.

We loved this tour (check out the video below of our adventure ), because it’s incredibly scenic and a unique way to experience Kauai. But as one of the more popular activities on the island, you’ll want to book far in advance as spots can fill up quickly.

8. Red Dirt Waterfall in Waimea Canyon

At just 6 to 8 feet in height, Red Dirt Waterfall is far from the largest Kauai waterfall. But the vibrant red soil the stream flows down makes it one of the most unique!

Red dirt Kauai waterfalls

The fall is in Waimea Canyon State Park near the mile 23 marker. You can park your car on the side to get a closer look, but you likely won’t be spending too much time here. But it’s worth a quick stop if you’re visiting the park.

  • Waterfall height: 6 to 8 feet
  • Distance from the Trailhead: Directly off the road

9. Waipoo Falls in Waimea Canyon

There are two different ways to see Waipoo Falls in Waimea Canyon . The easiest is from one of the many lookouts along Hawaii 550, like the Waimea Canyon Lookout and the Pu’u Ka Pele Lookout. The falls are off in the distance, but you’ll get to see sprawling views of the entire canyon as well.

Waimea Canyon Kauai waterfalls

Another option is to hike the Waipoo Falls Trail. This 2-mile trail takes you along the canyon rim to the top of the waterfall. You won’t have a direct view because you are technically on top of the falls, but the hike is still lovely and doable for beginners or families! If you want a full view of the waterfall, you’re better off driving to one of the above lookouts.

  • Waterfall height: 800 feet
  • Cost: $5 per person entry and $10 park for Waimea Canyon State Park
  • Ease of Access: Easy to Moderate
  • Directions to Parking: Waimea Canyon Lookout or Pu’u Ka Pele Lookout

10. Ho’opi’i Falls

The hike to Ho’opi’i Falls is a short but scenic adventure for those looking for a fun swimming hole. There are two falls here – the upper and lower falls. The trail takes you to the upper falls first, but you can continue for another 15 to 20 minutes to see the lower falls (although be extra careful as the trek is quite steep and slippery if it has been raining). For this reason, we’d rate this hike as moderate, although we did it with our 3-year-old and were fine.

Once you reach the bottom, you’ll find a nice swimming area! Or if you’d rather stay at the upper falls, you’ll also find a pool for swimming there.

The trailhead can be difficult to find, as parking is in a residential area. Respect the posted signs and do not park in front of a driveway! And don’t forget your eco-friendly bug spray (along with your other travel necessities ), as mosquitos are quite a bit of a problem here.

  • Waterfall height: 30 feet
  • Distance from the Trailhead: 1.8 miles

Kayaking Kauai: Paddling the Garden Island of Hawaii

T he island of Kauai is the only place in the gorgeous state of Hawaii that has navigable rivers besides the Wailuku River in Hilo on the Big Island. In open water, a paddle along the rugged and lush background provides the perfect setting for a day at sea. Turtles, dolphins, and whales may swim alongside you. On land, you have more activities than you can fit on a vacation but having a truly Hawaiian experience may make you want to move here. Kayaking around Kauai is a unique adventure and something to be added to your Kauai vacation!

In this guide to kayaking around Kauai, keep in mind that the rivers and bays can also be wonderful places for stand up paddling (SUP). We’ve even seen people SUP surf on the eastern shore, so have fun with it!

Safety Note:  the Island of Kauai is in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. There are remarkably strong and unpredictable currents. Only experienced kayakers with the appropriate sea kayak and safety gear should be paddling in the open water. When in doubt, sit it out!

Check out our 5 Day Kauai Itinerary here!

Easy Kayaking Spots in Kauai

With so many  activities on the Island of Kauai  geared toward tourists, there are tons of spaces to experience a leisure paddle. Whether you’re a beginner or intermediate kayaker you won’t have any issues finding a place to paddle on an island full of lush rainforest and beautiful beaches. While the paddling in Hawaii may look similar to  kayaking in South Florida , the reefs and rivers are VERY different and extra beautiful in their own ways.

Anahola Beach Park

Anahola Beach Park is another gorgeous spot for kayaking in Kauai. The park is located on the east side of the island and offers beautiful views of the ocean. With a reef protecting the bay this is a great place to explore calm waters and jump in for a snorkel. Paddling will allow you to explore the hidden coves and surrounding beaches. There are also several hiking trails nearby if you want to explore the area further.

Where to launch:  Anahola Beach Park  Anahola, HI 96703 (there are several beach parking areas to launch from)

Huleia River in Lihue (Nawiliwili)

Huleia River is an off-the-beaten-path just outside the Huleia Wildlife Refuge. Located on the island’s eastern portion it’s a popular route for paddlers wanting to experience the natural beauty of Hawaii on the water. Birdwatchers will enjoy the Menehune Fish ponds, a haven for exotic birds.

Where to launch:  Nawiliwili Small Boat Harbor  Nawiliwili, HI 96766

Wailua River in Kapa’a

The opportunity to float past the thick rainforests of Kauai creates a memorable experience. The Wailua River is the island’s longest river starting at Mount Waialeale. The calm waters provide a great paddle for beginner kayakers and take you to the 100-foot Uluwehi Falls.   Paddling Magazine  created a detailed post on your options in Wailua River.

The most popular attraction on the Wailua River is Fern Grotto, a natural lave rock formation that has hanging ferns and lush tropical foliage, watered and cooled by the nearby waterfall. If you kayak here, don’t be surprised if there are tons of tourists as it is a tourist attraction that can be easily accessed by a short boat trip.

Where to launch

  • Wailua River Marina  3-5971 Kuhio Hwy, Kapaʻa, HI 96746
  • Wailua State Park Boat Ramp  161 Wailua Rd, Kapaʻa, HI 96746

Experienced Kayak Spots on Kauai

The Na Pali Coast and South Shore are your best options if you are looking for a challenging open sea paddle. The weather and surf conditions can change quickly and can prove difficult for even the most season paddlers, especially on the long one-day Na Pali Coast trip. Treat kayaking Kauai on the open water as a dangerous paddling area even when it looks wonderfully calm. Similar to kayaking in the  San Juan Islands of Puget Sound , there are strong currents and the proper gear, both proper boat and safety gear, is necessary.

Poipu Beach, South Shore

Poipu Beach is filled with marine life such as turtles. Kauai’s South Shore is a contrast in terms of weather, giving drier conditions on land. A paddle through Poipu Beach allows exploration of sea caves and a dramatic perspective of the cliffs facing the Pacific Ocean. Continue east from Poipu for a long sea kayak trip to Ezra’s Beach at the Makauwahi Cave Preserve. It’s amazing!

Where to launch:

  • Poipu Beach Park , Koloa, HI
  • Shipwrech Beach  at Ainako Street Parking, Koloa, HI just past the Grand Hyatt

Lawai Bay, South Shore

Lawai Bay is a small inlet just west of the Allerton Gardens and has great waters for swimming but getting there can prove challenging. The area is home to mostly private property and the best access seems to be by a paddle. Launching from Kukuiʻula Harbor Beach a mile away you’ll be facing open sea. Check surf and weather conditions if you are going out for a paddle.

To the west of the cove if you launch from the Small Boat Harbor is the Spouting Horn and to the east heads towards Lawai Beach.

Where to launch:  Kukuiʻula Harbor Beach  Koloa, HI 96756

Na Pali Coast

The Napali Coast State Wilderness Park is on the northwest side of Kauai. Known for its dramatic sea cliffs, steep, narrow valleys, and cascading waterfalls this area is rugged. Exploring the 17-mile coast is no easy feat but is considered one of the most rewarding kayak experiences in the entire state of Hawaii. Expect sea sickness, large waves, and difficult wind conditions, and be prepared for a rough 12-14 hour day of intermittent paddling. You’re go-to outfitter will likely be Napali Kayak Tours as it’s not recommended to tackle this paddling journey around Kauai on your own.

Where to launch: Napali Kayak Tours OR  5-5075 Kuhio Hwy , Hanalei, HI 96714

Kipu Kai Beach

Kipu Kai Beach is a large cove on the southeastern coast of Kauai. Tucked in between two ridges that drop straight into the ocean, access is all cut off by land. Most folks explore by private helicopter tours but those willing to paddle out, they’ll have a remote, sandy, Hawaiian paradise all to themselves.

Where to launch:  Nawiliwili Small Boat Harbo r Nawiliwili, HI 96766

State Park Kayaking Spots in Kauai

Kauai also known as the Garden Island has a rich biodiversity. Nature lovers and outdoor recreationists will have a large playground for their next adventure. The state park system is well developed and does a fantastic job protecting the rare beauty of Kauai.

Nu’alolo Kai State Park

Once a fishing village Nu’alolo Kai is now a state park. Nu’alolo Kai State Park is one of the most scenic coastlines in the state and is surrounded by a large barrier reef, perfect for water enthusiasts. The catch to getting here… You’ll have to paddle the Na Pali Coast which can be a challenging 2-3 hour paddle. Once here you’ll enjoy archeological sites, native monk seals (they’re mean, do NOT approach) and breathtaking scenery.

Polihale State Park

Polihale State Park is located on the west side of Kauai and is perfect for a paddle. The park offers stunning views of the ocean, as well as the nearby mountains. The park receives much fewer visitors than others and is a bit remote. Adventurers will be rewarded with a beach characterized by large sand dunes and the dramatic background of rugged green scenery. For a paddle in the area  check out Napali Kayak .

Haena State Park

Haena State Park is tucked away on the north shore of Kauai. Also, known as the “end of the road,” this remote park provides tons of adventure with beaches, trails, and sea caves. This trip can be combined with the long-grueling Na Pali Coast trail should you wish for the ultimate challenge. You MUST have reservations for accessing Haena State Park on land.  MAKE RESERVATIONS HERE

If you want to paddle into Haena State Park, you can launch from Haena Beach Park and head west. Going around the points is a challenging paddle and you need to keep safety in mind AT ALL TIMES. PS: parking at Haena Beach Park can be difficult if you’re not there first thing in the morning.

Where to launch:  Haena Beach Park  HI-560, Kapaʻa, HI 96746

Hanalei Bay, Hanalei National Wildlife Refuge

Kayaking in Hanalei Bay is a must-do while in Kauai. The bay is located on the north shore of the island and is well known for its beauty. Visitors can enjoy stunning views of the mountains and coastline as they paddle around the bay. There are also several beaches to explore and plenty of opportunities to see wildlife. Check out local outfitter  Kayak Hanalei  for detailed information on the area.

Where to launch: Kayak Hanalei or  5-5070A, Kuhio Hwy , Hanalei, HI 96714

When to Visit Kauai

The most recommended time to visit Kauai is in the fall and spring when the weather is most pleasant and the state isn’t completely packed with tourists. The rainy season generally runs from November to March, with January the wettest.

Summer events in Kauai include the Koloa Plantation Days Celebration, the Kauai Marathon, and Kauai Mokihana Festival.

Need to Know for Visiting Kauai

With so much to do you really need a week or two on the island. It’s best to rent a car and do so well in advance. Eat local, the food scene is great. Be sure to be safe and swim on beaches with lifeguards, the water conditions can be rough. If you’re going to do any of the challenging, open sea kayaking, get a reputable outfitter. We recommend a few above. Most importantly, get out there and take the opportunity to paddle this beautiful state.

Kayaking on and around Kauai is an awesome experience to add to your Hawaii vacation. With navigable rivers, bays and epic sea kayaking, we've pick spots for beginners and experienced kayakers visiting Kauai.
