Northern Spain Photo Tour

The Cantabrian Photo Tour , it’s our more complete Spain Photo Tour . Costa Cantábrica has grown to become one of the favorite locations for landscape and seascape photography for landscape photographers. The Northern Spain area and the coast is one of the most amazing places in Spain and even Europe. It’s beautiful beaches, stunning cliffs, and rocky formations , as well as the impressive mountains of Picos de Europa , not too far from the sea, make this area a treasure to any landscape photographer lover.

This photography workshop will take us through the provinces of Basque Country, Cantabria, and Asturias . We will be focusing on many of the beautiful locations of this impressive coast, visiting several locations, like the impressive island of Gaztelugatxe, Barrika, Arnia or El Silencio , or the amazing cliffs and coastline in Costa Quebrada .

At the same time, we will be visiting and capturing some really picturesque villages and small town during our trip, as, Cudillero, San Vicente de la Barquera, Llanes, Lastres, Ribadesella and Luarca . We will also visit the famous city of Bilbao , where we will have a sunrise session by its most iconic building, the Guggenheim Museum .

Apart from these villages and the seascapes, we will be also visiting incredible mountain sceneries and forests. Between these visits, we can remark places like the forests around Vega de Pas or   Picos de Europa National Park.

We will also have at least one post processing session during our trip, in which we will learn tips and techniques to process some of the images we had taken on our photo tour. All these features make this one a really complete photo tour, which will bring you hundreds of photo opportunities and incredible experiences and moments.

Itinerary North Spain Photo Tour

Day 1 & 2 arrive in bilbao.

We’ll be meeting at Bilbao airport at the beginning of the Spain Photo Tour. During the first two days that we will spend in this area, we will visit the beautiful city of Bilbao. There we’ll photograph the incredible Guggenheim Museum.

In addition to the capital, we will visit the amazing nature around Barrika Beach, with its incredible flysch and rocky formations. Moreover San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, a stunning island with a small church over it, world-famous for having appeared in the series of Game of Thrones.

To complete the day, we will visit the beautiful forest of Gorbeia where we can photograph ancient beech trees and some waterfalls.

Days 3 & 4 Asturias

It’s time to go down to the coast again, to photograph the outstanding coast of Asturias, full of wild, stunning beaches and impressive cliffs. We will capture places as ‘El Castro de las Gaviotas’ or Gueirua Beach and El Silencio or Portizuelo Beaches. Some of the most incredible locations for landscape and seascape photography in the whole country and probably Europe.

Luarca and Cudillero have been important fishing ports throughout history and still have fresh seafood and delicious restaurants. Lots of large jagged rock formations and many variations in compositions will be on offer for other key locations like Playa Portizuelo, Playa de Toro, and many other hidden gems.

During the day time, we’ll be able to visit these famous villages in the region and others like Llanes, Ribadesella, and Lastres. These villages will bring us a photography opportunity, but also enjoy the local life and food, including the delicious seafood in the area.

The Silence Beach

Days 5 & 6 Picos de Europa National Park

After all the seascapes, a change of pace and scenery will take us up into the mountain range. Here we will find abandoned villages, waterfalls, and misty mountain views. The lush green forests and flowing streams at old mills will also be worth a morning bush walk.

For the next two days, we will be visiting the spectacular mountain of Picos de Europa National Park. And for the first time on this trip, we will photograph the sunset, of course, but also, we will do a night photography session by Covadonga Lakes. A great opportunity to capture the milky way.

Portizuelo seascape

Day 7 & 8 Cantabria

It is time to drive to the region of Cantabria, where we will stay for the next two days. We will be focusing on seascapes, photographing some of the most beautiful beaches, cliffs and rock formations of this incredible coast.

We are going to visit locations during, sunrise and sunset, as Arnia Beach, La Costa Quebrada, or Los Urros. During the day, we will visit and photograph some of the villages in the region, such as Comillas, Suances, or San Vicente de la Barquera.

Photographic Tour Cantabrian Sea North of Spain

Day 9 End of the trip

Today, we’ll drive back to Bilbao, where this Spain Photo Tour will come to the end. During our drive and if we have time, we will be able to stop in some other locations to make the trip more enjoyable.

Jabi Sanz Photographer Guide

I have been fascinated by the possibilities of photography since my trip to Iceland in Aug 2017. I grew up in Pamplona, a small city in the North of Spain. My parents always used to take me to explore nature, not far from my city. We have the incredible Pyrenees just an hour from home. But I never had a camera or a passion for photography till that trip to Iceland, where I bought my current camera. That country blew my mind and now I can’t live without photography. I think photography makes me connect to nature different from what I have ever experienced before. Nature is my inspiration, with all the beauty, variety of colors, sounds and compositions. Nature has made me travel and get to know places that I didn’t think before I would go.

The trip was very well organized, ran very smoothly, communication with both Eduardo Fuster and Jabi Sanz was immpecable, they are both very reliable. All our questions were answered without any delay. Jabi Sanz, our photographer leader, created a whatsapp group 3 months before the trip started allowing our interaction way before the trip startted Jabi is an amazing photographer with very broad experience, extremely enthusiastic, fun and reliable, who provided guidance and photography discussions. The choice of places based on weather conditions optimized the chances for the best photographies. Thanks a lot to both of you, it was a great trip, I learn a lot and had lots of fun. I certainly recommend PhotoWorldTours, specially Jabi Sanz, and I would be happy to join another of your trips in the future. Thanks a lot for organizing such a great trip!!

I am a Landscape and Cityscape photographer from New Delhi, India. I had lived the North-Spain dream for quite some time now. When PhotoWorldTours announced their North-Spain tour and especially with Javier Sanz as the tour leader, I signed up immediately. Since I had been following Jabi for a few years now, I knew more or less what to expect and the reality did not disappoint. The trip was action packed from the very start scouting locations, shooting sunsets late into the night and then up almost every early morning to shoot the sunrise, post-processing sessions and great choices for restaurants and wine after a hard photography session ! If you are considering a photography trip to Spain, then PhotoWorldTours are the obvious choice !

Northern Spain Photo Tour

Join us on an unforgettable photo tour where we immerse ourselves in the unique landscapes of Northern Spain.

This Northern Spain Photo Tour is for those who want to immerse themselves in some of the most beautiful landscapes of the country. From rugged coastlines to world-class mountains, ancient forests, and unique small scenes, this region is a dream for landscape photographers.

For many, Spain is most known for its wine, tapas, and sandy beaches, but there’s much more to it.

During our Northern Spain photo tour we travel through the three provinces of Viscaya, Cantabria, and Asturias. Each province slightly different from the other but highlights include otherwordly forests, majestic seascapes, and picturesque mountains.

Who is the Northern Spain Photo Tour for?

This trip is designed for lovers of landscape photography that want to enjoy the incredible landscapes in Northern Spain . Whether you’ve just purchased your first camera or have years of experience, we welcome you with open arms. All we ask is that you have a passion for photography and want to share this experience with a small group of like-minded people.

During the week-long Northern Spain Photo Tour, we will introduce you to some of the most incredible places on the region. Alternating between sunrise, daytime and sunset, you get the opportunity to see and photograph these unique places in all types of light and conditions.

While we visit all sorts of landscapes during the trip, we will be spending a lot of time focusing on the stunning coastal scenes of the region. From down low immersed in the action of the waves, to the cliffs above, we find all sorts of opportunities to create amazing photos.

image tours spain

Note: We are working with a semi-fixed itinerary on this Northern Spain photo tour. That means we have set days in certain regions but the exact locations we visit during these days will be determined based on the weather conditions. The key to good photos is to stay flexible and adapt to any situation in order to give you the best possible experience.

The Northern Spain Photo Tour begins upon your arrival at Bilbao Airport no later than 4 PM. We will wait for you outside the airport with our van, ready to drive to our hotel in Bilbao. After checking in and briefly introducing what you can expect throughout the week, we prepare to head out for our first sunset photography session.

We leave the hotel early to photograph sunrise in the beautiful Otzaretta forest located about a 45-minute drive from our hotel. If we’re lucky, we get treated with some fog to really set the atmosphere.

After our morning session we head back to our hotel for a late breakfast/early lunch. We can combine this with a walk through the old town where you get a chance to do some street photography.

In the evening we head out to Gaztelugatxe to photograph sunrise. This tiny chapel scenically located on top of an island is as made for photography and became famous from the Game of Thrones TV series.

For our morning session we go back to the Otzaretta forest for another chance to catch the atmosphere.

Back in Bilbao, we enjoy a late breakfast before we check out from the hotel and begin our drive towards Liencres. We make one or two stops along the way to places such as Cala de Mioño and Castro Urdiales .

After a couple stops, we check in to our hotel in Liencres and have a quick rest before headed out to our sunset location on the amazing Costa Quebrada . More specifically, we’ll shoot the sunset at Los Urros . We will get to know this place a lot better in the coming day.

Day four of the Northern Spain Photo Tour begins with sunrise at the beautiful La Arnia beach and viewpoint. We can photograph from both high and low and take our time exploring its beauty. After sunrise we drive back to the hotel for breakfast.

During the daytime we visit a nearby forest, drive to the nearby village of Santillana del Mar, or enjoy some downtime around the hotel area.

For sunset we will photograph another angle from Costa Quebrada .

We start the day with visiting the forest of Pinares de Liencres located just 10 minutes from the hotel. After exploring the forest, we move down to Playa Valdearenas before heading back to the hotel.

After a late breakfast and little rest, we check out from the hotel and start making our way to our accommodation in Cudillero (2h 10 min drive + stops). On the way, we make a detour and stop by the amazing Picos de Europa  to get a break from seascapes and enjoy some mountains.

For our evening session we will photographing the amazing Playa del Silencio beach. Here we can explore both high and low as the beach has a lot of different subjects to photograph.

The day begins with a sunrise session at the unique Gueriua beach . To get there we need to go for a small walk from a nearby village and follow a steep flight of stairs down to the beach. Once there, you’ll find a huge variety of compositional elements for us to work with.

During the daytime we will head into the fishing village of Cudillero where we can enjoy a few scenic viewpoints and lunch in one of the cozy harbor restaurants.

Our evening session will be at the amazing Portizuelo Beach . This is perhaps one of the most impressive sea stacks in Northern Spain.

The final day of our Northern Spain photo tour begins at the beautiful Aguilar Beach located just a few minutes’ drive from our accommodation, leaving us time to enjoy breakfast at the hotel in the early morning.

After a morning session we head back to our hotel and get ready to check out. On our drive back to the hotel we will make some stops and have lunch in a village between Cudillero and the airport.

Possible sunset by the Guggenheim Museum if we want. Otherwise, we’ll end the day with dinner at the hotel.

Departure from Bilbao Airport.

Additional Information

While our hotels have breakfast included, we might not always be able to align it with our sunrise sessions. In those cases, I suggest bringing a snack in the morning and we will stop at a café for a late breakfast when we are done shooting.

We will eat lunch and dinners at restaurants near the hotel or in the towns we stay in. On some occasions, you might want to have lunch on your own during our midday break.

The food in Spain is quite good and we have plenty of restaurants to choose between, especially when staying in Bilbao and Liencres. The options are slightly more limited in Cudillero but we have one restaurant in walking distance and a few more within a short drive).

Photography holidays | our speciality

An English run company on location in Morocco, we run photography holidays and photography tours throughout the year covering a variety of genres from street photography to landscapes.   Our all inclusive week long photography courses are based in the UNESCO medina port town Essaouira on the Atlantic coast whilst our photography tours cover the Moroccan desert and dunes and the verdant forests and river valleys of Spain.  With hands-on teaching at carefully chosen locations from a published photographer, the fantastic opportunities available in Spain and Morocco can be seen at Darren Lewey’s portfolio .

Learning made simple Develop your style

We simplify teaching so if you’re arriving as a beginner for the week, you’ll get the essentials quickly. We work with your camera’s individual settings and general photographic theory, improving your composition as we go. As a more advanced photographer you’ll benefit from having your photos reviewed on a daily basis, and with 1 to 1 tuition you’ll be pushed in new directions. Check out our raft of excellent student portfolios via our galleries page. Our photo tours are about location and light and are tailored for intermediate level photographers.   Our guests have also produced some competition winning photographs.

Small group sizes | one 2 one tuition

We specialise in small group photography holidays and tours up to a maximum of 6 people and no more.   We’ve been running these since 2010 and it works. As a result we like to think compact group holidays and photography tours run more smoothly.   We offer better value than many competitors and for the Essaouira experience, uniquely offer a gallery of your photos from the week which remains online after the holiday. With good accommodation on offer and evening meals taken à la carte at different restaurants, it’s more than simply learning; it’s a cultural holiday. Email me to find out more about how your photography will benefit.

DAY 1 - Overnight Flight to Europe.

The Trip Documents will provide guidance for airport check-in. Relax on your transatlantic flight with the assurance that Image Tours has taken care of all the details.

DAY 2 - PORTUGAL . . Arrival at Lisbon Airport.

Upon arrival, clear passport control and collect your luggage. Refer to the “Arrival Instructions” in the Trip Documents for directions on where and when to meet your tour manager. Transfer to your Lisbon hotel to check in and freshen up. An afternoon walk is an excellent way to form first impressions of this vibrant city with its pastel-colored houses, brightly-painted boats, broad boulevards and mosaic sidewalks. This evening, meet your fellow tour members during the “Welcome to Europe” dinner. (Dinner)

DAY 3 - PORTUGAL . . Lisbon.

This morning, get to know Lisbon during the city tour. Highlights include Belem Tower and the Monument to the Discoveries honoring Prince Henry the Navigator. A great way to spend your afternoon is to ride a street car up to São Jorge Castle and to walk the narrow, winding alleys of the Moorish Alfama District. The alluring shops offer fine Portuguese products such as hand painted ceramic tiles, pottery and figurines. Another consideration is to join the optional Cascais & Cape Roca excursion (see Optional Excursions). Return to your Lisbon hotel for an included dinner. (Breakfast, Dinner)

DAY 4 - PORTUGAL . . Algarve Region & SPAIN . . Seville.

During your travels today, keep in mind that more than fifty percent of the world’s cork is supplied by Portugal’s forests. Cross the Sado River at Alcácer do Sal and make a mid-day stop in the Algarve Region. Continue through southwestern Spain, also known as Andalusia, and travel through the province of Huelva. It is from the nearby port of Palos de la Frontera that Christopher Columbus sailed to the Americas in 1492. Your hotel for the next two nights is located in Seville, one of the largest historic Old Towns of Europe. (Breakfast, Dinner)

DAY 5 - SPAIN . . Seville.

During the city tour of Seville, a local guide will introduce you to the Plaza de España, the cathedral housing Columbus’ tomb, Giralda Tower, City Hall, and the tobacco factory of “Carmen” fame. The afternoon allows time to pursue your personal interests. Explore the Alcazar Palace (approximately €10), the Flamenco Museum (approximately €10), or the intriguing alleys and courtyards in the former Jewish Quarter of Barrio de Santa Cruz. Seville’s gardens provide a lovely setting for a picnic lunch. Of particular beauty is the Maria Luisa Park on the Guadalquivir River banks. The friendly neighborhoods and lively cafés of this delightful city invite people to relax and socialize outdoors well into the evening. Tonight, dinner is on your own to experience the regional specialties, or join the optional Flamenco Show with Tapas excursion (see Optional Excursions). (Breakfast)

DAY 6 - SPAIN . . Ronda - Costa del Sol.

Wind your way past thrilling mountain vistas to Ronda, a village whose unique location creates dramatic views over the Tajo Ravine. After an independent lunch, a local guide will share the history of this special place and point out photo opportunities. Today’s final destination is Spain’s Sun Coast, the Costa del Sol, in the province of Malaga. Your seaside resort, in the town of Torremolinos, awaits you with an included dinner upon arrival. (Breakfast, Dinner)

DAY 7 - SPAIN . . Costa del Sol.

Spend the first day of a five-night stay becoming familiar with your Andalusian paradise along the Mediterranean coast. If you join the optional morning Malaga excursion (see Optional Excursions), a local guide will introduce you to the port, castle and city center of the provincial capital, concluding with a tasting of the regional wine. For those desiring additional exploration of the Andalusian countryside, your tour manager will also offer an evening optional Mijas & Country Dinner excursion (see Optional Excursions). (Breakfast)

DAY 8 - SPAIN . . Granada - Costa del Sol.

This day focuses on the city of Granada, elegantly enrobed by the surrounding Sierra Navada mountains and crowned by the astounding Alhambra. In Arabic, Alhambra means “Red Castle.” Granada’s Alhambra was in fact a fortified compound, complete with protective walls, lookout towers, two palaces, a garden, and a village for the families of the nobles. Your local guide will share the fascinating stories of this area and reveal the history leading to the interwoven Arabic and Christian influences. After exploring the center of Granada, return to your Torremolinos hotel for an included dinner. (Breakfast, Dinner)

DAY 9 - SPAIN . . Costa del Sol.

A day for relaxation! Walk the beach, swim in the Mediterranean, or lounge at the hotel pool. The airy boutiques along the winding streets leading up to the hilltop village are a shopper’s paradise, selling Mallorca pearls, gold jewelry, cork products and Lladro figurines. Other options include the Botanical Gardens, Butterfly Park and Aquarium. Or perhaps, prior to tour departure, you reserved a full-day optional  Morocco excursion for this day (Note: Due to the uncertainty of availability and pricing for your departure, the most current information on independent Morocco excursion providers will be included in the Trip Documents.)  For your independent lunch or dinner in Torremolinos, numerous sidewalk cafés offer fresh seafood, paella and tapas. (Breakfast)

DAY 10 - SPAIN . . Costa del Sol.

Enjoy another full day at your resort location along the Mediterranean Coast, with options for swimming, sunbathing, shopping, sampling local cuisine, and exploring one of the neighboring towns. Or, join the full day optional Gibraltar excursion (see Optional Excursions) to visit the caves and meet the Barbary Apes on “The Rock” in the British Overseas Territory. After an included dinner, celebrate your last evening in Torremolinos with tranquil views from the hotel’s rooftop bar or amid the festive atmosphere of the beach boulevard. (Breakfast, Dinner)

DAY 11 - SPAIN . . Córdoba - Baeza.

Travel to Córdoba, where a local guide will explain the cultural landmarks, including the Old Jewish Quarter, La Mezquita (built as an immense mosque in the eighth century and currently used as a cathedral), Viana Palace and the Roman bridge. Take a stroll through the Old Town where splashing fountains decorate the patios and floral aromas fill the air. Depart Córdoba to travel among the infinite olive groves and rolling mountains of Jaén Province. You will overnight in Baeza, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The town is situated on a hill, and a small open-top tram will take you up to the hotel. (Breakfast, Dinner)

DAY 12 - SPAIN . . La Mancha - Madrid.

After learning more about this region during a morning tour at the Museum of Olive Tree Culture, head north through the region of La Mancha, the Arabic name for “parched earth.” Along the way, catch a glimpse of the windmills made famous by Cervantes’ story of Don Quixote. Ahead lies the fascinating city of Madrid, Spain’s modern capital and your final tour destination. Visit the Prado Art Museum with commentary from a local guide before transferring to your Madrid hotel for check-in and dinner. (Breakfast, Dinner)

DAY 13 - SPAIN . . Madrid.

You have a full day in Madrid to pursue your personal interests. Those who prefer more structured sightseeing might consider joining the local guide for an optional Madrid Royal Palace excursion (see Optional Excursions). Three popular choices for your afternoon exploration are the Old Town of Madrid (referred to as Puerta del Sol), EI Retiro Park (where you can rent a row boat on its Great Lake), or the Reina Sofía Museum (home to Picasso’s Guernica). Tonight’s independent dinner allows you to choose between the hotel, an outdoor café, or the optional Madrid Dinner excursion (see Optional Excursions). (Breakfast)

DAY 14 - SPAIN . . Madrid.

For your final tour day in Madrid, choose the Plaza Mayor, in the heart of the city. This lively square attracts a variety of street entertainers and is a favorite spot to finish souvenir shopping. Another possibility for today is the optional Toledo excursion (see Optional Excursions) to experience one of Europe’s most ancient cities. An included “Farewell Dinner” provides a final opportunity to enjoy the company of your fellow tour participants. (Breakfast, Dinner)
