Giant Rooks has announced details of a 2024 North American headline tour, which will kick off in April and follow a European run of dates.

The German band will begin the North American leg of the How Have You Been? tour in Toronto, ON, on April 8 and will travel across the US and Canada for one month. The run will see it perform at iconic venues like Washington D.C.’s 9:30 Club and Portland, OR’s Wonder Ballroom before the tour wraps up in Dallas, TX, on May 5.

The band will kick off 2024 on the road in Europe, opening in Barcelona on January 5. That leg of the tour will take them across the continent and over to the UK, where it will headline London’s O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire, among other venues.

The tour will be in support of Giant Rooks’ upcoming new album, How Have You Been? The record will arrive on February 2 via Mercury/Republic Records and will feature the recent single “For You.” Speaking about the track, the band said: “This song holds a special place in our hearts.

“It marks the opening track of our second album, and it’s the very first one we wrote for it. We’ve been performing it live for quite some time now, and we’re genuinely surprised by how deeply our fans have connected with it. We’re ecstatic that it’s finally out in the world!”

Show Review: Giant Rooks returns to Phoenix on the How Have You Been? Tour

The best Berlin boys in Giant Rooks returned to Phoenix last week to check in on the How Have You Been? Tour. An ecstatic crowd filled Crescent Ballroom and the band soaked it all in for one of the last stops of their North American run.

All five members and their plethora of instruments squeezed onto Crescent’s stage but the band still filled the room like an arena with their contagiously positive energy. Singer Fred Rabe had a permanent smile on his face, shaking the tassels on his jacket in time with the tambourine that played like an extension of his arm. By the time we hit “Bright Lies”, the fans were warmed up and ready to party, singing every word in harmony.

The production also took center stage, bathing the room in cool blues and warm oranges to fit the vibe of each track and send the sequined flowers on Rabe’s outfit glittering. Much of the setlist was drawn from the band’s new album and the response visibly blew them away. “Pink Skies” was a fan favorite, as was “Fight Club” and “Bedroom Exile”.

Giant Rooks has crafted a sound that encompasses both danceable pop-rock and the yearning reach of anthems that will absolutely fill stadiums one day. This latest album translated beautifully live and the band mentioned several times how much they love playing for the fans in Phoenix.

After over an hour of perfection, the set came to a close with “Morning Blue” and “Somebody Like You” before the band re-emerged for a thrilling encore. Being from overseas means we don’t see Giant Rooks nearly as often as we’d like but the band has already promised to return soon- undoubtedly to larger venues, bigger crowds and all the love the band deserves.

Just came from my first encounter with this delightfully exciting group as they performed at the historic Great American Music Hall in San Francisco. I love discovering new bands. And I have to say, the audience went wild and seemed to know every song. Personally, I wished that they'd slip in a song or two in German. Americans have to become more cosmopolitan. The Giant Rooks were so genuinely humbled and appreciative of the reception they received at this last stop on their 2022 American tour.

Giant rooks band aus hamm freut sich auf nordamerika-tour.

Sie gehören zu den deutschen Bands, die auch international begeistern können: Nach einer erfolgreichen Nordamerika- und Europa-Tour mit vielen ausverkauften Shows entern die Giant Rooks mit ihren Indie-Hymnen aktuell die Festival-Bühnen. Mitte Juli spielte die Band zudem ihre erste eigene Open-Air-Show - in Dortmund, nah an ihrer Heimatstadt Hamm .

"Wir sind seit drei Monaten auf Tour, waren in Deutschland, Österreich, Schweiz und haben in Amerika gespielt. Wir haben 50, 60 Konzerte hinter uns, und doch war ich aufgeregt wie vor einem ersten Konzert", erzählt Sänger Fred Rabe (26) über den Auftritt im Doppel-Interview mit seinem Cousin und Gitarristen der Band, Finn Schwieters. "Wenn man weiß, dass die eigenen Eltern, die Familie und die Freunde von früher da sind, will man auch beweisen, dass man es kann", fügt der Sänger im Gespräch mit spot on news an.

Familie als "schönster Ausgleich"

Viele Fans hielten bei dem Open Air Schilder mit der Aufschrift "We are proud of you" (zu Deutsch: "Wir sind stolz auf euch") hoch. "Da habe ich fast den Text vergessen, als ich das gelesen habe, ich war sehr gerührt", sagt Rabe. Mittlerweile habe die aufstrebende Band eine richtige Fan-Community in Deutschland , die sich viele Aktionen ausdenke und untereinander vernetzt sei. Auch Freundschaften seien dadurch entstanden. "Teilweise reisen sie uns sogar hinterher durch alle Länder. Das ist wirklich wunderbar", erzählt Rabe.

Ihr engstes Umfeld zeige sich, zum Glück, weniger euphorisch. "Die freuen sich alle schon sehr über den Erfolg, aber eigentlich ist es nicht so wichtig. Da stehen andere Dinge im Vordergrund und das ist schön", erklärt der Sänger. Er sei mit seiner Familie vor Kurzem im Urlaub gewesen und "wir haben überhaupt nicht über Musik gesprochen. Wenn man sich drei Monate lang in so einem Touri-Kosmos bewegt, Songs schreibt und Konzerte gibt, ist dieser krasse Kontrast sehr gut. Dieser Ausgleich, den man dadurch erfährt, das ist das Schönste."

"Surrealer" Festival-Auftritt

Die Festival -Saison hat die Band derzeit fest im Griff. "Vor allem das Southside- und Hurricane-Wochenende war wirklich surreal und überwältigend. Ich persönlich war noch nie auf so einem großen Festival, habe noch nie so viele Menschen auf einmal gesehen", erklärt Finn Schwieters. Nach dem mit Abstand größten Konzert ihrer Karriere mit rund 60.000 Menschen habe die Band den Auftritt gar nicht richtig für sich fassen können. "Es war wie ein Rausch. Wir haben dann dieses Mitschnitt-Video im Tourbus auf dem Weg zum Southside angeguckt und da ist uns klar geworden, wie toll das eigentlich war", fügt Rabe an. "Dort angekommen, konnten wir unseren Auftritt dann relaxter angehen und ihn genießen."

Die Corona-Pandemie und die Auswirkungen auf die Kultur- und Festivalbranche bekommt die Band neben den unvergesslichen Auftritten jedoch auch zu spüren. "Es ist eine sehr schwierige Situation nach wie vor für alle Leute im Live-Bereich", sagt Schwieters. "Zum Beispiel die Technik, die du normal einfach anmietest, bekommst du nicht und wenn du sie bekommst, dann kostet die das Doppelte oder Dreifache und das kannst du eigentlich gar nicht bezahlen." Hinzu komme natürlich das ständige Risiko, sich anzustecken. "Dann stehst du da mit deiner Crew mit 40 Leuten und kannst dich gegen Covid nur zu horrenden Preisen versichern." Es sei absurd, dass Festivals wie das Puls Open Air wegen Personalmangel kurzfristig abgesagt werden müssten. "Mich hat geärgert, dass gleich die wutentbrannten Reaktionen und Kommentare bei Instagram kamen", sagt der Gitarrist. "Die Leute müssen doch sehen, was die Veranstalter durchgemacht haben. Die hatten auch Lust, dieses Festival, das sie zwei Jahre lang verschieben mussten, zu machen und haben da wahnsinnig viel Arbeit reingesteckt. Da wünsche ich mir mehr Empathie."

Die Giant Rooks haben "noch nie so gut funktioniert wie jetzt"

Die Band aus Hamm hat 2015 ganz klassisch im familiären Keller ihre ersten Musikschritte gemacht. "Es gab von Anfang an das sehr ambitionierte Ziel, ohne Plan B das wirklich wissen zu wollen", erzählt Rabe. "Wir haben uns nach dem Abi gesagt, wir stürzen uns da jetzt voll rein und machen alle nichts anderes." Die Band habe sich gleich zu Anfang fast jeden Tag getroffen, Konzerte gespielt und versucht, die nächsten Türen zu öffnen, ergänzt Schwieters. "Richtig überambitioniert", kommentiert sein Cousin lachend. "Dann haben wir Jahr um Jahr drangehängt und heute steht das für niemanden mehr zur Debatte, zum Glück", sagt Rabe.

Über die Jahre habe sich die Dynamik der Band auf jeden Fall verändert, erzählt er weiter. "Ich glaube, dass wir noch nie so gut als Gruppe funktioniert haben wie jetzt gerade." Von vielen Bands höre man, "dass sie am Anfang beste Freunde oder beste Freundinnen sind und dann gibt es nach drei Jahren den großen Crash und sie lösen sich auf", weiß Rabe. "Bei uns war das eher so, dass wir, mit Ausnahme von uns beiden, nie so richtig befreundet waren." Erst durch die Musik und durch die gemeinsamen Erlebnisse seien sie ein richtiges Team und beste Freunde geworden. Kommt es doch mal zu Streitereien in der Gruppe, dann gehe es um "Kleinigkeiten. Streit gehört auch dazu. Aber insgesamt ist es schon erschreckend, dass wir uns so gut verstehen, weil wir wirklich jeden Tag aufeinander rumhängen", sagt der Sänger.

Neue Musik?

Ihr Debütalbum "Rookery" hat die Gruppe 2020 veröffentlicht. Zu ihrem aktuellen Titel "Morning Blue" haben die Giant Rooks einen Instagram-Post veröffentlicht, in dem sie vom Druck erzählen, neue Songs zu veröffentlichen. "Ich glaube, der stärkste Druck, den man spüren kann, ist immer der, den man sich selber macht", sagt Rabe. "Und den haben wir uns in den letzten zwei Jahren auf jeden Fall gemacht. Einfach, weil wir nicht so ein klares Ziel vor Augen hatten, wir hatten keine Deadlines für ein Album oder Tour, es hat sich wie im luftleeren Raum angefühlt."

Während der zwei Jahre habe die Band wahnsinnig viele Songs geschrieben und sei auf der Suche nach dem einen Song wie "Morning Blue" gewesen, den sie herausbringen wollte, um das nächste Kapitel einzuleiten. "Jetzt verspüre ich nicht mehr so den Druck, auf den Song können wir jetzt aufbauen und ein bisschen gelassener an die Sache rangehen." Zu der Frage, ob sich Fans bald auf neue Musik freuen dürften, bleibt Schwieters zurückhaltend: "Wir sind eher Freunde davon zu sagen: Lass uns Sachen fertig machen und sie dann ankündigen. Wir haben zwar unglaublich viele Skizzen gesammelt und die Songs müssen nur fertig gemacht werden. Aber vor August, September werden wir gar nicht so viel Zeit dafür haben. Aber wir haben total Lust darauf, neue Musik rauszubringen und werden mit Sicherheit auch noch ganz viel schreiben dieses Jahr."

Viel entgegengebrachte Liebe im Ausland

Ende des Jahres tourt die Band erneut durch Nordamerika. "Vor der ersten Amerika-Tour waren wir total nervös und hatten großen Respekt", erzählt Schwieters. "Aber die Leute haben uns total warm aufgenommen. Es war total schön zu erleben, dass sie das Album kannten, Songs mitsingen konnten und uns total viel Liebe entgegengebracht haben." Die Gruppe habe "richtig viele ganz tolle und gastfreundliche Menschen kennengelernt". "Es kommen auch einfach Menschen auf dich zu, fragen, wie es dir geht oder machen Komplimente, das kennen wir so aus Deutschland eher nicht", sagt Rabe.

Die Band freue sich bei der kommenden Tour besonders auf Kanada und auch Los Angeles mit seinem ganz eigenen Charme. "Wir spielen aber auch in für uns noch unbekannten Gegenden wie Texas, das wird spannend", sagt der Sänger. Apropos außerhalb Deutschlands: Mit welchem internationalen Musikact würde sich die Band nach Kollaborationen mit deutschen Bands wie AnnenMayKantereit eine Zusammenarbeit wünschen? "Wir haben H.E.R. im Vorprogramm von Coldplay gehört", erzählt Rabe. "Das war so gut, das geht wahrscheinlich in die Top Fünf meiner Konzerte ein - sie steht also momentan ganz oben auf der Liste."

Review & Press Interview: ‘How Have You Been?’ by Giant Rooks

Giant Rooks is a rare phenomena. They used to be a German band with a UK sound and English lyrics, but now, they’re expanding. How Have You Been? sees their sonic palette matching some of the greatest bands in the world. Their sound have drastically matured since the angsty debut album, ROOKERY. stadium-filling, celebrating and atmospheric, they sound like Red Hot Chili Peppers meet Foo Fighters while having an unbending indie edge that continues to shine no matter how big they’ve gotten.

While Giant Rooks might have risen to fame in a relative short time, the band has existed for ten years. From the initial stage where they knew nothing about songwriting to the rock n roll experts with endless bangers, only the band knows about the journey they’ve gone through. From around 115 tracks, Giant Rooks narrow down to 14 songs— How Have You Been? has the best of them. The album is a well-balanced, carefully curated guided sonic journey that explores our kaleidoscopic life.

“Pink Skies” is an instant hit. With mouthwatering guitar riffs, action packed progressions, and laid-back surf rock groove, the song evokes an unmistaken American coastal vibe. “Somebody Like You” is fierce. Luscious soundscapes in the backdrop of escalating vocals. Hopeless and hopeful at the same time, the track tells a love story that has a touch of destiny—it talks about getting under each other’s skin, feelings being reciprocated. It’s fast and dazzling, but romance is magic in rosy color. “Somebody Like You” tastes like sunset and sunrise at the same time. A little innocent, inexperienced, but courageous and intense.

”Under Your Wings” tackles around the same topic in “Somebody Like You,” but from a more vulnerable aspect. “You gave it up too many times/Under your wings, I’m feelin’ alright/My heart is racin’, my legs are shakin’/Stay by my side/Just stay by my side.” With killer lyrics that get under your skin, Giant Rooks deliver lines that hit hard when you’re dealing with some heavy stuff in your life. You can easily lose yourself in their music, being taken by the groove and the rhythm, letting the sonic warm brew fills up your heart.

Giant Rooks’ music is very healing in nature “Flashlights” again dives into the deeply personal subject. “The more I think, the less I seem to know/This is where I wanna go/Don’t take it away from me.” “Winter passed, flowers grew/What am I supposed to do?/I’m still caught up in-between.” Slow-burn anxiety, chaotic drastic feelings that can’t seem to be communicated clearly comes to life in “Flashlights”—the song creates a safe space for these indescribable feelings. “Brave New World” is about venturing into the unknown. Fear, solitude, and excitement melt into an adrenaline-infused sonic storm.

Press Q&A with Giant Rooks

Q:  Are there any songs from your last album that didn’t make the cut, and why?

Giant Rooks: Definitely. We wrote around 115 songs for the album, so there are plenty, enough for a third or fourth album. We’ve started to work on them again and had the realization that these songs are actually quite good. It’s a very nice adventure to always work on music, especially when you’re on the road. We’re in Boston right now, on our US tour. It’s really fun to be on tour and at the same time work on songs and to get some inspiration from all these people you meet on tour, all these places you see.

Q: How do you feel your music and approach to making music have evolved since you first started as a band? Are there any challenges or highlights that have shaped your journey?

Giant Rooks : When we started this band, we had absolutely no idea how to write a song. We were just looking up rehearsal space and would just play anything. We did that for a year—that was 10 years ago. It took us two years before we had a finished song, but we got more confident the more we were doing it. We developed our skills as songwriters. Now, we have an idea how to approach songwriting, which we didn’t have when we first started.

Q: Is there a song you have released that you have grown particularly fond of over the years?

Giant Rooks : I think the song that’s still very special to me is “Quicksand.” It’s what we perform at every show. You don’t really listen back to your music after the release. You only play it live, so you only get the feeling of playing it live. It’s growing. It never stays the same.

Q: What’s the piece of advice you ever received?

Giant Rooks : I’ve saved many good instagram quotes… I don’t know, to be honest. Not try to be anyone, anybody else, to be in sync with yourself. That’s probably an advice that really helped me a few years ago. Now, it’s not that important for me, but when you’re trying to find your identity and who you are, it’s nice to have someone saying something like ‘you’re just enough, and you’re good as you are. You don’t need to try to be more and anybody else.’

Q: While being on tour, what is something you always have to do before going on stage?

Giant Rooks : To be in the right mood for the show is very important. To have a day before the show, going out and exploring the city. This actually becomes very important for me to have a free mind and to play a show with full energy.

Q: What is your long term goal as a band?

Giant Rooks : Back in the days, when we got asked the question, we were always like, we would like to play at that festival or play a tour, here and there. We’ve changed in the way. The most important thing is that the five of us are happy with what we’re doing, and we’re still able to write music we like and be on tour and have a great time. If we can keep that, that’s the biggest goal and my aim for a future. It shouldn’t really be about achieving this or that. It would come naturally then.
