Brindisi, italy.

Known as the “Gateway to the East,” Brindisi is one of the largest cities in Italy’s Apulia region and one of the most active trading hubs in the country. Located on the Adriatic coast of Southern Italy, Brindisi will greet you with its crystal-clear waters and historic city views. After the bombings of World War II, the city spent many years rebuilding and now hosts a unique mix of historic and contemporary architecture, including churches and castles like Castello Alfonsino, the Church of Santa Maria del Casale, Santa Maria del Casale, and the Forte a Mare Castle. Beautiful beaches, like Lido Azzurro and Torre Guaceto, are also close by and will offer you a great place to relax.

Bordeaux (Pauillac), France

A destination for wine-lovers, food-lovers, and city ramblers, southern French city and wine region Bordeaux will offer you much more than only its famous red wine. With stunning classical, neo-classical, and urban architecture, historical monuments, incredible art museums, and a buzzing dining and drinking scene, this port city and UNESCO World Heritage site rivals the likes of Paris.

Kavala, Greece

Tucked into the northeastern coast of mainland Greece, just below the Bulgarian border, the hillside city of Kavala overlooks the Aegean Sea and is the main seaport of eastern Macedonia. Kavala will offer you a surprising mix of history, culture, and architecture—archeological sites, monuments, cobblestone streets, wooden balconies lined with flowers, colorful palaces, and hilltop fortresses—as well as diverse landscapes like lush wetlands, lagoons, inland lakes, beaches, and diverse flora and fauna.

Trieste, Italy

Old-World Trieste—a city that draws attention from travelers around the world—sits at a northeastern corner of Italy and brings together the Latin, Slavic, and Germanic cultures of the Adriatic Sea. You can experience so many different countries on your European cruise, such as Belgium , The Netherlands , France , Portugal , Spain and the British Isles . Let’s start in the British Isles, which include UK and Ireland among others. In Dover, discover the majestic chalk cliffs that line the British coast to the mainland. Experience the happy traditional dance performance of Irish Riverdance in Dublin's pubs and historic remains in Southampton. Also a trip to England's capital, London, is worth it. Packed with history and many sightseeing opportunities such as Buckingham Palace, The London Eye and the Thames.

Next stop: Amsterdam ! The capital of the Netherlands is known for its artistic heritage. The Dutch city is one of the most popular in Europe, yet it is versatile and at the same time compact. So you can collect many different experiences in a short time. If you love museums, this is the place for you. First, there is the world-famous Van Gogh Museum , which brings you closer to the different creative phases of the world-famous, Dutch painter. In the Anne Frank house experience the story of the Jewish girl who hid with her family in this house from the Nazis and wrote a diary. Lighter fare can be found in the numerous coffee shops selling not only cannabis but also normal drinks and snacks. For a little romance take a canal cruise on the small canals - especially in the evening - an unforgettable experience!

The second largest city in the Netherlands, Rotterdam , is also thrilling. In addition to the largest seaport in Europe, it is also the most important commercial and industrial city. The diversity of the city has contributed to the popularity of the city. Fans of art and architecture will be particularly happy. Just look at the Erasmus Bridge , a cable-stayed bridge reminiscent of an oversized harp - WOW! The Markthal Rotterdam is also an experience. The first fully covered market hall in the Netherlands not only awaits you with great delicacies, but also fascinates you with its glass facade from the outside. If you would like to discover the maritime vein of the city, then head over the ornate, white bridges to the Old harbour . Here, small sailboats, one-masts and barges are shallow in the gentle waves. Experience the cozy atmosphere at night with its colourful lights.

Continue to Belgium, to Zeebrugge , to be exact. The small port city belongs to the city ​​of Bruges and is only about 20 kilometres from the centre. In no other European city will you feel so much moved to the Middle Ages as in the Belgian town. Stroll through the narrow streets, along the canals and watch how carriages make the spectacle perfect. Highly recommended is the view from the Belfry , a medieval bell tower. The Holy Blood Basilica is worth a visit, as it is the oldest sacred building in the city. The most famous and popular photo opportunity of the city can be found at Rozenhoedkaai. From here you have a wonderful view of the canals and the back of the Holy Blood Basilica.

The next stop takes you to another country at the same time: Le Havre in France. Le Havre is the largest city in Normandy and the second largest seaport in France. Since about 80% of the city was destroyed in World War II, today you will find a modern city centre, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2005 due to the extraordinary postwar architecture.

Lisbon is also a popular city on a Western Europe cruise. The Portuguese capital scores with year-round average temperatures of over 20 degrees. In addition, the melancholy, slightly dilapidated city exudes an unforgettable charm. The city is located on seven hills, but with the historic tram , these are easily manageable. Catch a ride on number 28 to experience a spectacular ride through the narrow streets. Get off at the Castelo stop and walk a few minutes directly to Sao Jorge Castle . A wonderful view of the old town and the red bridge Ponte 25 de Abril and the famous statue Cristo do Rei awaits you. You should not miss the architecturally impressive Jeronimos Monastery with its beautiful courtyard. The building, which was almost completely preserved in the 1755 earthquake, is today a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Let’s not forget the fantastic beaches on offer! Visit the beach Carcavelos, where not only swimmers but also surfers get their money's worth.

Culinary highlights

A Western European cruise offers a range of culinary highlights.. In Belgium try the famous Belgian fries and the delicious waffles with toppings like cream and strawberries - just delicious! In Portugal, fresh fish, especially sardines, are often served. Stews, meat dishes and grilled chicken (Frango Piri-Piri) are very popular. Equal parts beachy hotspot and cultural hub, this historic city located on the Galician Coast is famous for its freshly-caught seafood, buzzing nightlife, and the oldest working lighthouse in the world.

Halfway between Genoa and Pisa is La Spezia — the perfect hub for you to discover the countryside of Liguria and Tuscany. With Cinque Terre being on most travelers’ bucket lists, a quick train ride will get you to the five towns overland, or you can hitch a ride (book a Shore Thing) by sea.

Le Verdon (Bordeaux)

A port city that opens up to one of the most famous places on Earth, La Verdon is a stunning entryway to arguably the most iconic wine country in the world – Bordeaux.

The only town on the archipelago of Shetland, Lerwick is a beacon of nature. Visit one of Shetland’s amazing beaches, kayak, explore the labyrinth of sea caves and witness a broad spectrum of wildlife,  from Orca whales to Shetland ponies.

Livorno (Florence/Pisa)

E urope is a continent built on its rivers, with many having played a vital role in the formation and development of its most important cities . From the Thames to the Tiber , they are an ever-flowing reminder of the continent’s long and varied history.

The opportunity to sail along these rivers, among the world’s most beautiful and peaceful waterways, is a temptation that’s easily given in to. Of course, a river cruise is about more than just spending time floating on the water (although that option is available, should you wish). It’s about the towns, cities and landmarks along the way.

These trips will take you on a relaxing and slow-paced journey to vineyards and valleys, tours and excursions, returning each night to your own floating hotel. Each day offers quick stops to discover some of the continent’s most important cultures at your own pace.

The Independent has rounded up eight of the best Europe river cruise packages, from epic continental crossing and to the finest Christmas markets to explore.

Capitals of Eastern Europe, Viking River Cruises

Viking River Cruises’ Capitals of Eastern Europe itinerary is a 16-night trip covering the main cities on the Danube. It sets sail from Vienna, the elegant and sophisticated Austrian capital, and it finishes in Constanta, Romania, before a quick final journey overland to Bucharest to end your trip with a two-night stay.

On the way you’ll visit a host of towns in Hungary, Serbia and even Bulgaria, but on this trip the bigger cities are the main attraction. Vienna is followed by Bratislava – where Baroque palaces meet a typically Eastern European Old Town – and then Budapest . The Hungarian capital is a highlight: from festooned “ruin bars” and thermal baths to a spectacular neo-Gothic parliament building, the city has a wide variety of architecture, activities and things to do.

North Rhine & The Netherlands, TUI

Alongside the Danube, the Rhine is one of Europe’s main cruise rivers. Many operators have several Rhine packages; TUI’s offering covers a stellar range of cities for a very affordable price. Its ships have two dining options (a bistro and a more formal restaurant) with al fresco seating, as well as a wellness and activity area on the top deck. No excursions are included, but this does give you free rein to choose whatever activities you like.

The first two days are spent in Amsterdam , where you’ll have ample time to wander its canals and green spaces, such as the Vondelpark, or visit attractions such as the Anne Frank Museum, Van Gogh Museum and Rijksmuseum.

Days three and four bring you to Rotterdam and Dusseldorf. You can enjoy the port area in the Netherlands ’ second city or simply marvel at its dramatically different modern architecture, while Dusseldorf provides a variety of museums and concerts alongside a lively Old Town. On days five to seven, you’ll visit four picturesque riverside cities and towns: Bonn, Koblenz, Boppard and Oberwesel. There are waterfront bars and restaurants galore, and each has its own slice of history (think of a Beethoven museum in Bonn and a memorial to the ruler who united Germany in Koblenz).

The Douro, Riviera Travel

A trip along the northern Douro River can offer views to rival even the most idyllic of Algarve beaches. This trip starts in Porto , where bars and restaurants line the banks in the Ribeira (Riverside) district, but it is worth climbing the various hills to see other areas and sites, such as the cathedral and Dom Luis I Bridge.

After setting off along the Douro, your first two stops are Pinhao – a picturesque wine town, famous for being at the heart of the Port-producing region of the country – and Castelo Rodrigo, a 12th-century walled village located in the highlands. Day four will see you visit Salamanca, the Spanish sandstone city famous for its cathedrals and university.

The next two days are spent in Peso da Régua and Lamego – two small hillside towns – before returning to Porto on day seven. The cruise ends here, but the holiday doesn’t; this package also contains a three-night stay in Lisbon . After travelling to the capital by coach, you’ll visit the nearby towns of Coimbra (day eight) and Sintra (day 10), while you’ll have a day in the capital sandwiched in between; while in Lisbon, take in the city’s unique Manueline and Pombaline architecture while wandering through its grand squares, and visit Sao Jorge castle or the city’s famous Time Out Market.

Idyllic Rhône, Scenic Cruises

Your first trip will take you north along the Saone River to Macon, a famous wine region in Burgundy.

The next two towns, Vienne and Viviers, offer spectacular views of the Rhone before you arrive in Avignon. Day six will take you to Rotterdam before you head back to the Dutch capital.

The Greek islands are known for famous foods like feta cheese, but the location is also home to a slew of other delicacies. Olive oil plays a big part in the local cuisine, as does local produce such as tomatoes and other Mediterranean vegetables. Feast on feta me meli, baked feta wrapped in filo, or choriatiki, greek salad with tons of vegetables. While meat such as lamb, pork and veal are found everywhere, especially in gyros or keftethes (meatballs), fish and seafood are the undisputed stars, due to proximity to the sea.

SAY CHEESE!

Kefalonia is home to the legendary tiropita cheese puff, which is basically cheese baked in cheese, although you'll also find puffs filled with vegetables, particularly spinach, and even sometimes meat. You can also find local cheeses like feta, manuri or kefalotiri everywhere.

EYES ON THE PIES

Meat pies filled with lamb, veal or sometimes pork are called kreatopita, and they are cooked with wine and tomatoes, garlic, cinnamon and nutmeg, creating a medley of flavors. There's also a variety called pastitsio that combines pasta and meat.

Your choices are endless when it comes to fresh seafood prepared according to local tradition. Try a simple shrimp and pasta dish, or go wild with octapodi kokkinisto, octopus in tomato sauce during your Greece cruise.

Croatia has steadily grown in popularity as a tourist hotspot, offering everything from crystal clear bays to cities crammed full of history dating back to medieval times. But with so much culture and coastline to choose from, it can be hard to decide which part of Croatia to visit first.

While Dubrovnik ’s Roman ampitheatres and Fort Bokar have gained fame from their appearances in Game of Thrones , the island of Hvar combines turquoise waters with a party scene to rival Mykonos or St Tropez. Meanwhile, foodies have a lot to say about Zagreb , which blends Eastern and Western European cooking styles with Mediterranean ingredients like olive oil and rosemary, as well as root vegetables and dumplings.

Cruising around the Adriatic sea is a great way to experience ancient walled cities filled with medieval architecture along with lush island gems like Mljet, Korcula, and Vis. All without having to pack and unpack or browse ferry timetables to travel between islands.

You’ll start and finish in Trogir, with stops including the islands of Brac, Hvar and Vis as well as the historical city of Dubrovnik.

There are no tour guides so you have the freedom to explore or relax depending on how the children feel that day. It’s a convenient way to island hop, without dragging everyone’s suitcases around.

Much-loved European destination reveals plans to ban cruise ships from city centre

A MUCH loved European holiday destination has revealed plans to stop cruise ships from sailing into the city centre.

The tourist hotspot is expected to impose a blanket ban on the boats entering the area within the decade.

Amsterdam confirmed yesterday that it will be moving the passenger terminal away from the city centre by 2035.

It will also half the number of vessels allowed to dock at the terminal from 2026.

Yesterday a meeting was held where the decision was made by the City of Amsterdam’s Executive Board.

It is a measure to combat overtourism and improve the quality of life for residents, according to the report in the  NL Times.

The report follows the full City Council adopting a motion from the socially progressive D66 party last year, calling for cruise ships to be banned from the centre and the cruise terminal to be relocated.

In April, the Board also announced its intention to also halve the number of river cruises in the city.

The Board is comprised of the mayor, and elected aldermen from the local coalition parties.

The Cruise Line International Association has said a “ban” was a misinterpretation of the long-term future of the port.

CLIA said in a statement: "Amsterdam is and will remain a popular cruise destination, and cruise tourism will continue delivering important economic benefits to the city – to the tune of around 105 million Euros annually.

"That economic contribution is particularly significant when you consider that of the more than 21 million visitors to Amsterdam each year, only around 1 per cent arrive by cruise ship.”

Last year, Ilana Rooderkerk, the leader of D66 said “polluting cruise [ships] is not in line with Amsterdam’s sustainable ambitions”.

She also claimed that cruise ships run against the city’s “task of combating mass tourism”.

According to a BBC news report, Rooderkerk also compared cruise tourists to a type of “plague of locusts” descending all at once on the city.

At the moment 190 cruises are allowed to dock annually at the PTA near Amsterdam Central Station.

This number will be limited to a maximum of 100 18 months from now.

Those ships that do arrive in the city centre will also be required to use shore power , starting in 2027, to lower on diesel emissions and reduce noise.
