GPS-guided tour

As you drive in your car or travel by train or bus, Just Ahead takes you on a guided tour. It uses GPS to know exactly where you are and what to say. Imagine you’re cresting a hill and in front of you is a beautiful sight. You’re wondering what it is. That’s when Just Ahead shares with you an exciting story about what you’re looking at.

Works offline

Many of the most beautiful places in the world don’t have mobile phone service. Just Ahead is designed to work wherever you are, even without WiFi or a cell signal. Just be sure to download your guide before you go on your trip.

Built-in maps

Don’t you hate it when you try to use the maps on your smartphone and they don’t work because there’s no mobile phone service? No worries. Each Just Ahead guide comes bundled with an offline version of the maps you need, even without Internet access.

Great stories

Just Ahead guides are written by expert authors and filled with fascinating stories of history, geology, and wildlife. You can’t read and drive. It’s crazy, illegal, and will probably make you sick. Let us guide and inform you as you drive.

stories

Suggested directions

Just Ahead can also help you avoid getting lost by suggesting directions. Just Ahead tells you why you should turn or not, what you should do after a turn, and recommends the best direction to take if there are multiple route options. It’s like having a professional tour guide in the car with you.

Trip-planning resources

Every time we go on a trip, we stress out about when to go, where to stay, what to see, etc. Wouldn’t it be great if you had someone with you who had been on that exact trip countless times? Sharing tips and tricks before you even leave your house? Just Ahead does exactly that.

We get you there and back

Just Ahead tells you everything you need to know about your destination. But we also know that there are a lot of miles between home and the park, or between this park and the next. That’s why we cover all the common routes to and from your destination. No matter which route you choose, we’re with you, telling you stories along the way.

Where next?

We at Just Ahead are working to build the most comprehensive series of audio guides for the whole world. Wherever you’re traveling, we want to be there.

What people are saying.

“I really like how we didn't need a signal since we were out of range, and also how it knew where we were and gave us info for the things right in our view!”

— Laurie G.

“Holy cow! Just got back from my Death Valley trip and I can't believe how great the app was along the journey. Not only did it guide us to hikes and places we might have (easily) overlooked, but gave us perspective of the park that allowed us to appreciate it on a whole new level (history, points of interest, flora/fauna, etc.).”

— Jesse Forest

★★★★★ “…great on-demand tour information about the park and really opened up the experience….”

— iTunes Reviewer

★★★★★ “This is one of the best apps I've ever used. Exploring Joshua Tree Park with this app was excellent. It even distinguished between the direction of driving and told different information for each direction.”

“I never knew the desert was so alive!”

- JillianPress

“Great! Local travel info & stories. I love this app. I learned a lot about the Jackson, Wyoming area & Grant Teton Nat’l Park. I have already recommended it to folk who connect with my own local Jackson based business, xcDogs. Everyone I speak to about it loves the idea…”

“Excellent adventure stories for the Grand Tetons”

- Rick Aune

"For new visitors paddling on a sunny day, the new TravelStorys app is an opportunity to understand the ecological and culture significance of the area. At home or in the classroom, the voice narration coupled with photos can entice and enhance the experience before a canoe even launches."

- NewJersey.com

"Great app for visitors & locals - This app rocks. Learned so much about Jackson Hole and the surrounding areas just by having my phone on me. Anyone who is adventuring in the wild Wild West should consider having this app on their phone. You’ll be surprised with how much you can learn on your trip!"

- Austin Hopkins

Neat app! Great for a frequent traveler or history buff! Very interesting stories about pikes peak! Can't wait for the Garden of the gods tour!

We decided to skip the big bus tour and drive our rental car on the Road to Hana in Maui. The app was very accurate and informative! Great music, stories and history too! Would definitely recommend this app. 10/10!

Finebotyom 18 hours ago

We have been on many different driving tours across the state and unfortunately this is the first time we have used the Shaka guide. It’s is really awesome and make the drive much more interesting. I really recommend it!

So glad I this app made our trip great saw things we wouldn’t have seen and learned about the areas and history. Even got to see sea turtles on the beach due to the information on the tour and such easy directions to follow. Looking forward to some of other tours they have now that we are back on the main land. It’s like having your own personal tour guide and flexibility.

The best one so far! I highly recommend it! This app made our experience 100 times better! Loved it!

Honest Risa 4 days ago

I have never written a review on an app and this app made the trip unforgettable! The best part is it works on airplane mode and still navigating. Loved how each speaker explained each area of each park as well as the history. Loved how it navigated you through all areas of each park, had us doing things we didn’t even think of! I have been recommending to all my pears that travel and explore nature.

Absolutely a must have guide! Fascinating sites, history and music. Different information on the way back along the Highway to Hana! So incredibly useful as we rented a car and turned on the Shaka Guide and had the best day ever on the Road to Hana!!!

We learned, laughed, enjoyed all the history and legends, plus really enjoyed the food recommendations! The tour was easy and on point! Can’t wait to do Road to Hana tomorrow! Thank you ♥️♥️🌺🌺🌺

What a great app and tour. Excellent narrator and great job all around. I heavily recommend it.

Stews58 1 week ago

We just finished 2 weeks in Hawaii and we used the Shaka Guide almost every day, with excellent results. The guiding was almost perfect and we were really happy we bought it. Pros - the app gave a nice balance of: - great narration - routes choose interesting locations to visit - well-timed directions that made it easy to get the correct turn - stories of history local to where we were driving (family-friendly, without talking down to us) - humor - music Cons: - Sometimes we missed what the narrator was saying, but we found if we backed up 30 seconds, the directions would get out of sync to where we were. When that happened, the narrator might start a story, which got cut off to tell to turn or it missed giving the turn. - It sometimes got confused if we started a route in the middle, even if we followed all the steps (use Google/Apple Maps to get on-route).

This is cool!

Tutto bene!  (SelfTour’s Translation: “All’s Good”)

“Best buy for the money. I took the tour half way in two leisurely days. Perfect.”

I found this tour to be an excellent mixture of ancient history and contemporary commentary.  I was most amazed at the number size of the palaces along your well-selected route.

I really enjoyed the SelfTour GPS guide app of the historic area of Philadelphia.  I was very impressed with how easy it was to follow along.  And I like the way various founding fathers were brought to life through hearing them speak their famous lines.  Wonderfully entertaining and a great learning experience.

Mind blowing

I’ve learned so much about historic Philadelphia on your tour.  I am a Quaker so to know Benjamin Franklin was a Quaker, among other facts was mind blowing.   Just seeing the original cobblestone and original materials they used was amazing as well.

The Best Way to See a City? Audio Guides

While nothing screams “tourist” like a guidebook, nothing says “local” like a pair of headphones.

Audio-Guides-2-Gear-Patrol-Full-Lead

By Emily Singer

Consider the tourist. The oft-stigmatized identity is more a temporary mindset than it is a permanent condition, assumed with the intent of experiencing foreign cultures and ideas. Yet while many strive to discover something new when traveling, few desire to be flagged as an outsider. The easiest way to adopt the guise of a local is to don the one accessory that pervades every major city across the globe and grants instant insouciance: headphones .

Because while nothing screams “tourist” like a guidebook , nothing says “local” like a pair of earbuds — and no one has to know that it’s a pre-recorded tour, not music, flowing through them. Better yet, today’s most worthwhile tours are more akin to conversations than dry textbook excerpts, laden with insider tips and personal narratives that take you off the main square and down streets where only a local would know to go. Here are four worth plugging in to.

Detour-Gear-Patrol

Best for Staycationers. Taking the form of personal narratives, Detour brings you off the beaten path, through up-and-coming neighborhoods and inside noteworthy buildings. Using location-aware GPS tracking, the app modifies audio scripts in order to speak to whatever site is in your line of vision, or lies just ahead. Most tours will recommend food and drink stops, and all can be synced across multiple devices to allow for makeshift group tours.

Locations: San Francisco, Chicago, New York and Los Angeles, with six more major cities on the way GPS Integration? yes Price per Tour: $4.99+

Just-Ahead-Gear-Patrol

Best for Roadtripping. Given that each U.S. National Park can span thousands upon thousands of acres, driving is often the best way to see as much as possible. But gawking at a stunning geologic formation with zero knowledge of what you’re looking at, exactly, can feel like a fruitless venture. With location-aware, GPS-based narratives, Just Ahead solves that issue, auto-playing stories as you approach particular sites and suggesting nearby hikes and turns to make on roadways.

Locations: virtually every major U.S. National Park GPS Integration? yes Price per Tour: $14.99+

Trip-Scout-Gear-Patrol

Best for Seeing a City Like a Local. With GPS-guided and offline audio tours (for those without international data plans), TripScout ’s tours meander through both main squares and quiet side streets, recommending local restaurants and shops, and allowing users to flag specific sites and locations for future reference.

Locations: more than three dozen cities across the globe GPS Integration? yes Price per Tour: $2.99+

Rick Steves Audio Europe

Rick-Steves-Audio-Tour-Gear-Patrol

Best for the Old-School Tourist. What Rick Steves’s self-guided walking tours lack in 21st-century technology, they make up for in scope. Pulling from its namesake travel expert’s decades of television and radio programming, Audio Europe houses an ever-growing roster of city walks, museum tours and interviews with notable residents in both major and minor cities. While there’s no GPS integration, a map accompanies each tour for directional guidance.

Locations: an ever-growing list of major (and minor) cities spanning Europe GPS Integration? no Price per Tour: free

If you’re headed out on a great American road trip, flip on Autio, an audio entertainment app that tells the stories, secrets, and lesser-known histories of the people and places you pass on the highway. We love how Autio’s audio stories (read by a cast of narrators including John Lithgow, Phil Jackson, and the app’s cofounder Kevin Costner) dig deep into major destinations and landmarks as well as often forgotten stories.

I am a startup lawyer and I help a ton of app developers. I have pitched this exact app to a bunch of them because I wanted to see an app like this made. The teams all concluded the same thing: it would take a Herculean effort before any revenues would come. This would be a passion project more than a simple utility application. I believe that is correct but I think the team at here hear have found the right people who are passionate about learning and sharing because this app is excellent. The experience is great and the content is solid. This is a perfect application for someone who travels a lot and tends to have their nose buried in a guidebook or loves reading the plaques at historic sites. I’m so excited this app is here.

Inaccurate and with bugs

I’d love to give this a 5 star and review and maybe in time once the bugs are works out I will. However, the information on many “stories” is rather inaccurate. I will give one as example here. The story on East Stroudsburg, PA states it was originally named “Danville” when it was actually named “Dansbury”. Danville is a completely different town in PA. Also, you reference the historic train depot in East Stroudsburg which is a rather significant piece of their history. You also wrongly named that as the Pocono Depot I believe. The train depot is actually Dansbury Depot, always was and still is as it ran its last route through there in 1970. Some very large inaccuracies on this topic here. Lastly, once you complete one story it automatically feeds into the next and you get “charged” for a second story which was not the intended. Some large bugs and inaccuracies to work through before I can rate this higher. I give two stars because the idea of it is great, but it needs to be factual.
