Puerto del Rosario has been the capital of Fuerteventura since 1860 and it was previously called "Puerto de las cabras" (Port of the goats). The city is the largest on the island, with a population of around 30,000 people according to Wikipedia and it's the main port in Fuerteventura, with many big ships coming here every day.

Puerto del Rosario is not considered a popular tourist attraction in Fuerteventura , but if you decide to visit, here's a list of things to do and see. However, in recent years, the city has seen a lot of changes and the beach has improved a lot and it is now a really pretty place to take a walk or spend the day.

Many cruise ships now make a stop in Puerto del Rosario during the winter season, so the city becomes more lively due to the larger number of tourists. Also, many visitors from nearby resorts come to Puerto del Rosario just to see the big ships when they arrive at the harbour.

If you plan on doing some shopping while on holiday, then Las Rotondas is probably the best place on the island. It has a great number of shops, like Zara, Bershka, C&A, H&M and some other local brands. There is also a big Hiperdino supermarket on the ground floor and some buffet restaurants, with Indian and Chinese food, on the top floor.

Depending on where you are staying on the island, you may want to read more about shopping in Fuerteventura in order to get more information about other towns and resorts.

The entire town of Puerto del Rosario is an Outdoor Sculpture Park, with over 50 pieces of art scattered all over the city. The sculptures were designed by different artists as part of an annual contest called The International Symposium of Sculpture.

You can just take a walk through the pedestrian city center, or the ocean promenade and you will find these pieces of art at every corner, each different from the other. Some of the big pieces are placed in the roundabouts or intersections and you will be surprised at the creativity demonstrated by the artists.

It seems like the town of Puerto del Rosario loves art and aims to bring it to the streets, both with the sculpture park and now with the mural paintings. The initiative has started in 2011 and by now there are over 400 mural paintings in the city.

Some of the local brands have sponsored the project and the talented artists, among which there are names like Dailos Paniagua, Luis of God, Juan Pedro Mendoza, Sophia and Lorenzo Mederos and Martinsolar Deva.

While you take a walk to discover the sculptures, look out for the paintings too, since you will find them in the most surprising places, not only in the town center, but all over Puerto del Rosario, making the place more beautiful.

Playa Chica is a town beach and it is situated close to the harbor where some of the big ships arrive, so it is not as popular for swimming among tourists. The beach in Puerto del Rosario has been updated and now it looks really good and it's also bigger than before, so maybe the name Playa Chica (the small beach) isn't so appropriate anymore.   The water here is usually calm and you can find many beautiful seashells if you walk on the shore.

Playa Chica has many facilities like beach showers, lifeguards and changing rooms.

Close to Puerto del Rosario, you will find another large beach called Playa Blanca.

This beach has facilities like sunbeds and umbrellas, plus there usually is a lifeguard on site.

Playa Blanca is one of the Blue Flag beaches in Fuerteventura , so it well maintained and it is also popular for surfing.

On the beach, you can find a small chiringuito (beach bar), where you can serve a cold cocktail or a beer and they also serve sandwiches for a quick lunch on the beach.

Since Puerto del Rosario is the island's capital, each year it organizes its own carnival , which is very popular, especially among locals and residents.

This event usually lasts for 2 weeks, sometimes between February and March and it has a different theme every year.

If you're passionate about karting, then come to Puerto del Rosario and try the Gran Karting in town. It's a great way to spend time with family and friends, especially on a cloudy day, when you're looking for something to do away from the beach.

10 Things Do in Puerto del Rosario, Fuerteventura + MAP

Home | Travel | Europe | Spain | Canary Islands | Fuerteventura | 10 Things Do in Puerto del Rosario, Fuerteventura + MAP

Puerto del Rosario is one of those places that surprises you. Personally, I didn’t know much about the capital of Fuerteventura until we visited it a few years ago, and the truth is that I loved it. Also, there are many things to do in Puerto del Rosario , so we stayed for a few days to explore this city.

Puerto del Rosario used to be a small fishing village until it became the capital of the island in 1860. Since then, its reputation began to grow, drawing more tourists and becoming one of the places to see in Fuerteventura , where you will find beautiful beaches, valuable historical heritage, nightlife, and much more.

In addition, many of the government institutions work here, so the city does not thrive solely on tourism. Here you will be able to appreciate a bit of everyday life, but Puerto del Rosario, Canary Islands does not lose the charm of what has been known to be a small and cozy town.

In this guide, I will tell you everything about what to see in Puerto del Rosario . I have selected activities and sites of all kinds, so I’m sure you’ll find something you’ll like.

1. Iglesia Nuestra Señora del Rosario, an essential place to visit in Puerto del Rosario

The Iglesia Nuestra Señora del Rosario (Our Lady of the Rosary Church) is a must-see in Puerto del Rosario . This church is an icon of the city, and it’s located in the center of the historic quarter, where you will find other important buildings such as the Cabildo de Fuerteventura and the government office, so you will easily get lost among its little streets.

Iglesia Nuestra Señora del Rosario, is puerto del rosario worth visiting

This neoclassical church was declared an Asset of Cultural Interest, and in addition to its exquisite architecture, you will be able to appreciate other details that are worth seeing with your own eyes. For example, in the central part, there is a sculpture of the Virgen del Rosario from the 19th century.

In addition, it has some red stonework windows that are quite a relic of the past, and a large bell tower that has been preserved since its foundation.

So, if you are looking for things to see in Puerto del Rosario in one day , you have to add this church to your itinerary.

2. Lime Kilns, the most curious thing to see in Puerto del Rosario

The lime kilns are incredible things to see in Puerto del Rosario , so you cannot miss them. There are several of them distributed throughout the city, and their presence tells a bit about the history of the town’s economy.

Limestone can be found in various places in Fuerteventura, which is why, for many years, kilns were built to burn this stone and obtain lime for selling. This was done in the coastal areas mostly, to facilitate the shipment of the merchandise. In fact, the port of Puerto del Rosario became known as the “Puerto de la Cal,” (Lime Port) since this activity quickly became the mainstay of their economy.

Lime kilns, things to do in puerto del rosario fuerteventura

If you want to visit them, you can choose between several. If you are looking for an option close to Puerto del Rosario’s town center , you can go to the Hornos de Cal D. Carlos Suarez, located 0.5 miles away. In addition, a few feet away you will find the Centro de Interpretación Los Hornos de Cal de El Charco , which offers explanations and relevant information to complement your visit.

On the other hand, the Hornos de Callao de Los Pozos are located about 1.2 miles south of the center and are some of the oldest to see in Puerto del Rosario. Another option is the ones in La Hondura, located 1.9 miles away, but to the north.

3. Sculpture Park, an interesting place to see in Puerto del Rosario, Fuerteventura

The unique Sculpture Park (Parque escultórico) is among the best things to see in Puerto del Rosario . This set of more than 100 statues is scattered throughout the city, and it is worth searching for these artistic works while walking through its streets.

Sculpture Park, puerto del rosario canary islands

Puerto del Rosario works like an open-air museum, and you will find sculptures by different artists with different meanings in all its corners. You will be able to appreciate representations of historical figures, animals, or abstract figures, but I assure you that all of them have a particular charm.

The first creation was La Fuente de la Explanada , a sculpture located on the seafront, at the intersection of Castillo y León Street where the historic center begins. Other famous works are las Caracolas , located on the main pier, and the Pescador de Viejas , next to the promenade.

4. Visit the promenade, the best thing to do in Puerto del Rosario at sunset

The promenade is one of the liveliest areas to see in Puerto del Rosario . Here, several of the main avenues of the city converge, such as León y Castillo and Calle Juan de Betancourt, and you will find yourself very close to the ferry and cruise terminals, so there are always quite a few people.

Taking a walk along the promenade is one of the best things to do in Puerto del Rosario , especially at sunset. In addition to the wonderful views of the sun reflecting off the ocean, you will enjoy the essence of the city to the fullest.

Waterfront promenade, puerto del rosario marina

There are cafes, restaurants, shops, several of Fuerteventura’s nightclubs , and some green spaces with beautiful sculptures, so you will always find something to do here. A part of the pier is reserved exclusively for sports and fishing boats, so you can spend some time there and appreciate another type of landscape.

However, the most interesting thing is the skeleton of a 33-foot-long rorqual tropical whale that you will find near Playa Chica . This incredible sculpture is part of the Senda de los Cetáceos project , an initiative that seeks to raise awareness about the need to protect the natural environment for the local whale population.

For this project, the skeletons of stranded cetaceans in the Canary Islands have been recovered, either for natural reasons or by human action, and they are exposed in different areas of the Fuerteventura coast.

5. Unamuno House Museum, a traditional place to visit in Puerto del Rosario, Spain

The Unamuno House Museum (Casa Museo de Unamuno) is another great place to visit in Puerto del Rosario, Spain while you make your way through the city. This museum is located in the old Fuerteventura hotel, an emblematic place where Miguel de Unamuno spent a few months of his life while taking refuge from the Primo de Rivera dictatorship. Also, the story says that he wrote his poems there while watching everything from the roof, naked.

Unamuno House Museum, puerto del rosario spain

Here, you will be able to take a trip back in time and discover everything about the traditions of the time, but, above all, you will be able to feel the love that Unamuno developed for the Majorera island throughout that time, up close.

The house has original objects, photos, and texts that retell his entire journey visiting the inland towns of Fuerteventura, and his walks along the beaches appreciating the beauty of its nature and tranquility. At the entrance, you will find a large statue as a tribute, making this place in Puerto del Rosario worth visiting .

6. Playa Blanca, the best beach in Puerto del Rosario, Fuerteventura

If you’re a beach lover, there are several things to do in Puerto del Rosario , although visiting Playa Blanca is my favorite one. It is less than 1.2 miles to the south of the city and has 1,640 feet of golden sand where you can lie in the sun.

Playa Blanca, visit Puerto del Rosario fuerteventura

Unlike the beaches closest to the pier, this one is not overrun with tourists, so it has a quiet environment where you can relax and rest away from the crowds. However, it has all the services you need to spend a long day by the sea, such as restrooms, showers, and parking, making this beach in Puerto del Rosario a good place to visit with family.

In addition, it has a children’s playground and a restaurant, so if you want, you can easily spend the whole day enjoying the beach and its surroundings.

7. Playa Chica, an urban beach you can visit in Puerto del Rosario

Playa Chica , also known as Playa de los Pozos, is one of the most beautiful beaches in Puerto del Rosario . This beach is located at the end of Primero de Mayo street, right next to the Palacio de Congresos , so it won’t take you long to get there from the center of Puerto del Rosario’s old town .

Playa Chica, puerto del rosario marina

It is only 328 feet long and is protected by 2 dikes on either side, so it may be a good option if you’re looking for a beach with calm waters or you’re on a vacation with small children.

Here there are almost no waves, and you can easily access it on foot. In addition, there are restrooms, hotels, and restaurants in the area, so you don’t need to go far to enjoy a day at the beach with modern comforts.

8. Playa Lajas, another beach where you can relax in Puerto del Rosario

Playa Lajas is another beach to visit in Puerto del Rosario . This beach has volcanic sand and a different landscape than the previous ones, so it is worth a visit. Of course, it is 3.7 miles away from Puerto del Rosario , so you will need a car to get here, but I assure you that it’s worth it for the tranquility and sparse crowds.

Playa Lajas, best puerto del rosario beach

In addition to lounging or lying in the sun, this beach is the perfect place to practice some water sports, so if you’re thinking about trying something new or practicing your skills, here you can sign up for surfing, windsurfing, and kitesurfing lessons.

A perfect plan to end the day at the beach is to go to the town Puerto Lajas , which still preserves its fishing spirit and where you will find different traditional restaurants so you can try some fresh fish and shellfish. Overall, if you’re looking for a quiet place to visit in Puerto del Rosario , this is one of the best options.

9. Admire the murals and street art in Puerto del Rosario

Another thing to see in Puerto del Rosario is its street art. In 2011, the government launched a plan to beautify its streets, so it called on different local artists to paint their works in different parts of the city.

Street art, puerto del rosario port

While the project is still in progress, there will be about 400 murals in total that will fill the streets of Puerto del Rosario with life and color. A great plan to tour the city is to look for these murals, which represent themes of Spanish culture, cartoons, and much more.

If you prefer to organize your visit, you can ask for a map with all the mural locations at the Tourist Information Center to find them more easily.

Lastly, the murals are usually loved by children, so if you are traveling with little ones, it’s something fun to visit in Puerto del Rosario .

10. Ecomuseo de La Alcogida, a historical place to visit in Puerto del Rosario

The Ecomuseo de La Alcogida is located in the town of Tefía , within the Municipality of Puerto del Rosario, about 12.4 miles away from the city center. Although it’s located on the outskirts, it’s an interesting thing to do in Puerto del Rosario, Spain if you want to know more about the traditional rural life of Fuerteventura.

This museum is made up of Majorera houses from the 19th century, which were restored by the Cabildo. Here, you will see representations of various aspects of daily life at the time and, among other things, you will be able to understand how an alcogida works. An alcogida is a typical water collection system that stores water in large cisterns.

Ecomuseo de La Alcogida, puerto del rosario fuerteventura

In addition, there are exhibits that will provide you with information about the different trades that were practiced during this time, such as baking, goldsmithing, and stone carving, and other displays about livestock, including camels, goats, and donkeys.

Visiting this museum is something different to do in Puerto del Rosario , and one of the things you can enjoy with the whole family.

Where to stay in Puerto del Rosario, Fuerteventura

There are many places to stay in Fuerteventura , but if you want to get the most out of your visit to Puerto del Rosario , I recommend spending 1 or 2 nights in this city. You can choose between several accommodations and there are options for each type of budget. These are my suggestions:

  • High budget: Hotel el Mirador de Fuerteventura is one of the best hotels in Fuerteventura and has simple rooms with a balcony and views of the ocean.
  • Medium budget: JM Puerto Rosario is a very good option for couples, and the hotel we stayed in during our trip.
  • Low budget: Hotel Tamasite is a nice, cheap hotel right on the beach.

On the other hand, if you like nature, you can also go camping in Fuerteventura and spend the night on Playa Blanca in your tent.

Best restaurants in Puerto del Rosario, Fuerteventura

After visiting so many places in Puerto del Rosario , you’ll surely want to refuel yourself by enjoying some typical food in the Canary Islands . Although you will find all kinds of restaurants here, these are my top recommendations that I am sure you will love.

The first is the Restaurante La Jaira de Demian , which specializes in Mediterranean and Spanish cuisine in general. I like it because it has a very relaxed atmosphere without neglecting the details in each of its dishes.

On the other hand, Casa Toño is located a few feet from the port and Casa Unamano, so if you are in that area, you can have lunch here and then continue your sightseeing tour. This is a more traditional restaurant where you can enjoy the flavors of the Canary Islands, and the prices are cheap.

Finally, El Bounty , is one of the top restaurants in Fuerteventura . They serve seafood, Italian, and Mediterranean cuisine, so you will have an option for every palate. It is a cheap place to eat, so if you are in a large group, I recommend you take a look.

Puerto del Rosario map

Below, you will find a map of Puerto del Rosario, Fuerteventura that will help you organize your itinerary. It includes all the best things to see in Puerto del Rosario that I mentioned.

And that’s all for now. I hope this guide was helpful and encouraged you to visit Puerto del Rosario, Fuerteventura . It’s certainly worth adding to your visit to one of the best Canary Islands , so let me know what you thought of it. You can also leave me a comment with your questions, and I’ll be happy to help.

What to do puerto del Rosario see visit Fuerteventura

This opinion is completely independent , based on our experiences. We visited the region anonymously, making our own choices and paying our bills in full.

Is Puerto del Rosario worth a visit? Best thigns to do?

If you have less than 5 days on the island, we don’t think Puerto del Rosario is a priority, unless you’re a fan of street art. But if you have more, it’s an interesting city to contrast with the island’s other hypertouristic towns.

We enjoyed discovering this city, rich in artistic works and with a very relaxed atmosphere.

1. Discover the statue park

Statue in Puerto del Rosario

Puerto del Rosario is an open-air museum. This is the city of sculptures. Indeed, you won’t be able to miss them, as there are around 150 on almost every street.

These works of art are in completely different styles. Some have explanatory panels, others don’t. Some are highly representative of reality, while others are more abstract or fairytale-like.

Sculpture in Puerto del Rosario

If you take the walk around the beach and harbour, you’ll see quite a few. And if not, around the church and in the pedestrianized main street you’ll find other important works. Outside the center of town, the conductor’s house on the square in front of UNED is just as intriguing. We won’t show you the photo, so you may be surprised.

2. Visit Our Lady of the Rosary Church

Puerto del Rosario church

In the heart of the town, slightly set back from the seafront promenade, stands the pretty church of Notre-Dame du Rosaire. It’s a modest-sized Catholic church. It was built in the 19th century and is still in use today. We like its elegant simplicity, with its white and gray hues. The bell tower dates back to 1888, when the regional council purchased 2 bells from Marseille.

inside the Puerto del Rosario church

Inside, the decor remains minimalist, but the altar is magnificent, framed by a grey arch.

In the square, don’t miss the explanatory panel on the church, with drawings and photos of the building’s various evolutions.

OUR TIPS FOR RENTING A CAR IN Fuerteventura

  • Compare prices on our preferred platform: DiscoverCars – one of the best rated sites.
  • A small car is all you need.
  • But you can also choose a larger one if you wish, as the parking spaces are rather large.
  • There’s a lot of demand and it’s an island, so book early .

3. Visit the Miguel de Unamuno Museum

Unamuno Museum Puerto del Rosario

Next to the church is a small museum. There aren’t many in Fuerteventura, so it’s worth mentioning (see our list of museums ).

Miguel de Unamuno is one of the most illustrious people associated with Fuerteventura. He was an eminent Spanish writer, poet and philosopher who spent six months on the island following his exile. He fell in love with the island, and it influenced his writing.

His residence has been transformed into a museum dedicated to his life as a rebellious intellectual in Spain.

We can’t give you the museum’s opening time, as 3 signs around the door indicated different times. And even though everyone said the museum should be open by the time we got to the door, it was closed… But it’s sure to be closed on Saturdays and Sundays.

4. Admire street art

Street art in Puerto del Rosario

Puerto del Rosario is also a colorful town. Most of the buildings have white walls, but they are dotted with murals (and floor paintings too). The artworks vary enormously in theme: quotations, superheroes, Spanish culture… If you love street art, plan a full day to see it all!

5. Enjoy the beach in the heart of the city: Playa Chica

Playa Chica

Right in the center of town, Playa Chica beach offers fine sand and clear, calm waters, perfect for swimming. As we strolled along in the morning, we saw locals doing their daily swim.

It’s rather sheltered from the waves, which can be nice for relaxing in the water after a day’s exploring.

It is supervised during certain vacation seasons. There’s a shower and toilet. We found it particularly pleasant.

6. Feeling small in front of a whale skeleton

Skeleton of Puerto del Rosario

To the left of the beach, you’ll find the skeleton of a Bryde’s whale (Balaenoptera edeni). It overlooks the water between the beach and the port.

The skeleton is one of four on display on the island to highlight these marine animals. This one is 9m long. It belonged to a young female weighing 6,000 kilos. She was discovered floating dead in 2006. This species has a very sharp head, as you can see, and is capable of descending to a depth of 200m and staying underwater for more than 20 minutes.

7. Walk along the promenade

Paso Maritimo Puerto del Rosario

From the beach, you can head back towards town along the seafront promenade, or continue south to head out of town. The promenade is very well laid out and pleasant. It leads to lime kilns and the Playa Blanca beach, which we present in the following sections.

It’s something we love about the Canary Islands. Many towns have lovely, long seafront promenades, where you can enjoy a good walk.

9. Stop at the lime kilns

Los Hornos de la Familia Morales

Along this walk, you’ll discover two structures. The first is just off Playa Chica. It’s Los Hornos de la Familia Morales. The second is halfway to Playa Blanca. This is Los Hornos de Callao de los Pozos.

These are former lime kilns. And they’re very well maintained. They were once essential to the island’s economy. Lime was used to whitewash the island’s houses. This process gave the dwellings antibacterial properties, even neutralizing aggressive pathogens such as bubonic plague.

They were used until around 1970.

7. Discover the wild side of Playa Blanca

Playa Blanca

Continuing on foot (or by car), you leave the town and discover the wilder Playa Blanca beach. Beware, the road along the beach from the town is unpaved (but not difficult).

It’s a long beach with different shades of sand and stones. It’s less protected than Playa Chica, so you can enjoy some great waves.

Showers and toilets are available in the south end parking lot (next to the hotel). It is supervised during busy periods.

10. Excursions to see the island, if you arrive by cruise ship

Corralejo dunes

If you’re prepared to spend a slightly longer day on the road, we highly recommend taking the time to explore the northern half of the island with:

  • The famous Corralejo dunes : This is a fascinating protected natural park with sand dunes right next to the beach. Contrary to popular belief, sand does not come from the Sahara desert. It formed naturally on the island.
  • The village of La Oliva
  • The panoramic mountain road with its superb views
  • The ancient capital of Betancuria

Please note that for cruise ships, the program is often more limited without the mountain section.

See options and book.

11. Observing the locals in this non-touristy capital

Urban life in Puerto del Rosario

One of the things we liked most about the capital is that it’s not at all touristy (except when there’s a cruise ship). So it’s interesting to see the contrast with other tourist-filled cities. We enjoyed watching the locals chatting and enjoying their coffee on the terrace. We enjoyed the gentle pace of life.

12. Lunch in Huga, gastrotapas

Restaurant Huga

If you’re in Puerto del Rosario at lunchtime, we recommend the Huga restaurant on the pedestrian street, with its Gastrotaps. It’s a great way to take a break before exploring again!

Puerto del Rosario is Fuerteventura’s Capital and largest town, housing its main port as well as the island’s commercial and administrative centres. The town was known as Puerto de Cabras (‘Goat’s Port’) until 1956, when officials decided that this factual title sounded a little unflattering. Though it has been a municipality since 1834 and the island’s capital since 1860, its beginnings were rather humble, and for a long time consisted of little more than a few locals raising goats around a watering hole. The town’s big asset is its sheltered natural harbour, which has continued to play a large part in its growth over the centuries.

The old Parador Hotel and Puerto del Rosario

The harbour is the oldest area of town with small streets of traditional Canarian houses and a recently-upgraded promenade. Puerto del Rosario is the main entry and exit point on the island for both people and goods, with the airport located nearby at El Matorral and the large port that receives both commercial and leisure traffic. Cruise ships dock here regularly along with ferry services to Las Palmas and Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

To the south of town is El Matorral, home to a huge army barracks and base, originally built for the returning Spanish Foreign Legion following the Spanish withdrawal from the Western Sahara in 1975. The influx of nearly 5000 soldiers (many of whom were foreign mercenaries) effectively doubled the town’s population overnight and was not a particularly welcome development in a sleepy and remote backwater that was only beginning to open to tourism. Many serious incidents were attributed to Legionnaires stationed there, including several murders, an attempt to blow up a disco and even a plane hijacking! The Legion eventually moved to Almeria in 1996, though their presence was an important factor in the growth of Puerto del Rosario.

Superheroes Mural in Puerto del Rosario, Fuerteventura

‘Puerto’ isn’t known for being the prettiest place in Fuerteventura and looks a little scruffy and rundown in places. However, many improvements have been made to the town in recent years, such as the pedestrianising of streets, an improved harbour area and the addition of over 100 sculptures, statues and street art. Although Puerto del Rosario has improved dramatically in recent years (it still felt downright ‘dodgy’ when I first visited some 15 years ago), some areas such as the now-pedestrianised Calle Primero de Mayo, are now a little sterile and empty. No doubt this will change given time.

Church of Nuestra Señora del Rosario, Puerto del Rosario, Fuerteventura

The large church in the centre of town is dedicated to the patron, ‘Virgin del Rosario’, who is celebrated on the 7th of October every year during the fiesta de Nuestra Señora del Rosario. The church was built in 1824 with the addition of a tower in 1930 and is actually an extension of the original chapel, built in 1812.

Another place of interest is the Casa Mueso Unamuno, a historic house-museum of the old “Hotel Fuerteventura”, where the Basque Writer and Philosopher, Miguel de Unamuno, stayed during his exile on the island.

If none of that takes your fancy why not try a little retail therapy? Take a wander around town, stop for a coffee, shop in the high street or head to the large Las Rotondas Shopping Centre (the biggest on the island). Many high street shops close for siesta in the afternoon, but most in Las Rotondas stay open all-day. There is also free parking in the basement – which is very welcome if you are not familiar with Puerto del Rosario’s one-way traffic system.

The two main beaches near the town are Playa Chica, which has seen recent improvements and had its size increased by almost three times. Improvements have also been made to the promenade along with the addition of beach-side showers and toilets. Playa Blanca to the south of town tends to be visited by locals and, if the conditions are right, surfers. The former Parador Hotel at the south end of Playa Blanca has been closed for many years, though it is due to open again in April 2017 (under new ownership).

Along with other great improvements to the town, a large bus station opened in 2008 (Estación de Guaguas) which serves as hub between the north and south of the island.

All in all, although Puerto del Rosario is changing for the better, from a tourists perspective, there are many other great places to see and I wouldn’t put this at the top of my list.

Understand [ edit ]

The city was founded around 1795. At that time, the town of Puerto de Cabras was called "Goat Harbor". This very prosaic name was laid in 1957 in favor of the better-sounding Puerto del Rosario, "Port of the Rosary Madonna", which refers to a church in the center of the city. In the 19th century, the port was an important hub for burned lime and, in particular, the "Karmin" dye, which was extracted in the vicinity of the town. Puerto del Rosario became the largest island on the island and in 1860 finally the island capital.

The municipal area of Puerto is almost 300 km² and extends from the east coast of the island to the west coast.

Visit Puerto del Rosario, Spain; a travel guide to the town of Puerto del Rosario, Fuerteventura

Photo of Puerto del Rosario

Visit Puerto del Rosario

Puerto del Rosario is the capital of the island of Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands .

Explore Puerto-del-Rosario

Puerto del Rosario is the capital of Fuerteventura and is a working fishing town and port. It has not traditionally been a tourist town though cruise ships do dock here for visits to Fuerteventura as do the inter-island ferries. The town is however undergoing something of a facelift in the hope of attracting more tourists in the future.

The sea front area in particular has been developed and improved and the two town beaches have both been enlarged. The harbour is the oldest part of the town and has narrow streets lined with typical Canaries-style buildings.

Puerto del Rosario is perhaps the best town for shopping on Fuerteventura and is expanding all the time.

Puerto-del-Rosario used to be called Puerto de Cabras, or Port of Goats, after the herds of goats that lived on the island. The name was changed in 1956 as islanders felt it opened them up to mockery, though there are still residents who would like to see the old name taken up again.

Puerto del Rosario means Port of the Rosary and the main church in the centre is dedicated to the Patron Saint, the Virgin del Rosario.

Worth a visit is the home of the poet Miguel de Unamuno which has been opened as a museum. The museum is free to visit and has been decorated as a typical Fuerteventura house of the 19th century. This is the house Miguel de Unamuno lived in for a few years when he was exiled from mainland Spain for criticizing the dictator Primo-de Rivera in the 1920s.

Puerto del Rosario has a town beach, the Playa Chica, which is a pleasant sandy beach with wooden walkways for wheelchair and pushchair access. The promenade which runs along the edge has had a lot of money spent upon it to make the beach area more attractive than it used to be.

A short distance to the south and with plenty of parking is the Playa Blanca which is a nice sandy beach and has a beach bar and showers, toilets and lifeguard.

Places to visit nearby

The attractive seaside resort of Corralejo is to the north of Puerto-del-Rosario. With beaches looking out over the island of Los Lobos and miles of protected sand dunes this is a lovely part of the island of Fuerteventura.

You can also catch a ferry to Lanzarote from Corralejo and explore the live volcanoes on the island.

To the south is the resort of Caleta de Fuste, also known as Castillo. This is one of the main resorts of Fuerteventura.

You can find more local travel ideas in the Eastern Canary Islands guide .

Fuerteventura

Lying just 100km from the African coast, Fuerteventura recalls its neighbour Lanzarote, only with more colour. Resembling shallow piles of saffron, chilli and coriander, there are none of the mist-wreathed pines or cooling, hilly microclimates of Gran Canaria. Blown by the wind and baked by the sun, the island is truly an arresting spectacle: for the full-on, wide-angle perspective of the Martian-like landscape, climb up to the Mirador Astronómico de Sicasumbre and take it all in.

On the other hand, Lanzarote is captivating with its unique volcanic landscape and a broader cultural offer , thanks to the influence of the artist César Manrique.

In terms of cost of living , although Fuerteventura may be slightly more affordable in terms of rent and services, Lanzarote has a wider variety of dining and leisure options. Travel connections are another aspect to consider, as Fuerteventura offers less mass tourism, while Lanzarote has a more developed tourist infrastructure, which translates into greater ease of travel around the rest of the archipelago and Europe.
