Synth-pop sensation a-ha from Oslo, Norway formed in 1982 by Morten Harket (vocals), Magne Furuholmen (keys) and Paul Waaktaar-Savoy (guitar) became a global success with the smash hit single “Take On Me”.

Long before the major success that was “Take on Me” the trio formed in Oslo, Norway in 1982 and later moved to London, England to take their career to new heights. It was there they sourced their name taking inspiration from a typical English exclamation. It was also around this time that the trio were introduced to their future manager John Ratcliff.

In 1985 a-ha released their debut album “Hunting High and Low” which officially put them on the map and catapulted into international stardom. Peaking at number one in the Norwegian charts and number two in the UK, the album featured the tracks “Torn”, “The Sun Always Shines on T.V.” and of course the smash hit single “Take On Me”. You’ll hear renditions of the popular track all over the world, whether it’s in karaoke bars or covered by artists such as a1, Tori Amos and ska-punk band Reel Big Fish. The success of the album earned the band a Grammy nomination for Best New Band. The following year the album was also named the best-selling album of the year.

a-ha were invited to play at the 1998 Nobel Peace Prize ceremony held in Oslo performing alongside Shania Twain, Elton John and Enrique Iglesias. At the end of “Foot of the Mountain” tour cycle, in 2010 the band announced that they would be calling it a day.

To mark 30 years of band history, in 2015 a-ha reunited to perform at Rock in Rio festival held in Brazil. In that remarkable length of time, the band have managed to amass a sale of over 80 million records worldwide, released nine studio albums, and inspired a multitude of bands such as Coldplay and Keane while remaining in the top list of highest grossing musicians in the world.

Live reviews

So, A-ha return after a five year "farewell" to promote a new album, "Cast In Steel". Well, promote it, I'm not sure, since they played only two songs from it (compared with nine from the first two albums!). A real shame that, as the two they played, the title track and "Under the Makeup" were excellent.

That was one of a few gripes, the second being the lack of songs from later albums, notably Analogue and Memorial Beach, where "Celice" and "Dark is the Night" were omissions. Including those, and a couple more from the latest album would have addressed my third complaint, that the show was criminally short, at 1:45 mins. my final bugbear was one that I have with a lot of bands, that they save all of their 'big' songs for the encores - just wish they would spread them around, and leave the encores as they should be, for bonus songs.

Anyway, that aside, it was a great set, with all (except the two above) key songs represented, most notably in the three song mini-set, where Morten left the stage, for his place on vocals to be taken, in turn, by Pal, Magne and the support act/background vocalist Anni, on three fabulous numbers: "Velvet", "Lifelines" and "Here I Stand and Face The Rain." Then there were the classics, "Hunting High and Low" was awesome as always, as was "Take on Me" to close the encores.

A great show, and it's great to have them back. Hope it won't be long until the next gig.

Norwegian new-wave/synth pop outfit A-Ha were a staple addition to the European airwaves throughout the 1980s having scored numerous hit singles. Despite having disbanded and reunited many times, the group is well and truly back in the musical zone and are planning to release a new album towards the end of 2015. The current setlist though is all about the pop classics of their heyday and it is these vintage gems that keeps fans old and new continuing to attend the tours in high numbers.

The fact the original trio remains in tact helps with the fantastic showmanship they attain as they not only have a natural rapport with each other, but they also convey this rapport to the crowds for are so enthusiastic throughout the show. This is mainly due to the pace never dropping off as the gig is constantly propped up by the appearance of mega hits such as 'The Sun Always Shines on T.V.' and 'Cry Wolf'. These sound as shimmering and shining as ever, yet it is perhaps the encore of 'Take On Me' that receives the largest singalong of the evening. From the deafening final applause, it is no wonder the group have reformed so many times.

I’ve always been a fan of A-Ha. Being an 80s child I listened to them growing up and well into the 1990s. I admit I still listened to them even after most had moved on. Their eclectic music beats and lyrics makes giving them up hard to do. They’re just an 80s band that keeps coming back and back.

Anyway, I saw them live back in 2009. It was my first time too. So after listening to them for nearly 20 years, I finally got to see them alive. Was I disappointed? Not at all! They were flipping amazing.

Their stage setup was quintessentially 1980s but with a modern flair There were no outlandish costumes, but just a fun business casual look. The crowd was cheering in delight and some older members of the crowd had taken out their lighters and stared swinging them side to side. Just like they do in movies. The experience made me feel amazing and it was an auditory experience I’ll never forget in my life.

There are few 1980s bands I’ll bother watching live, but A-Ha is one I’ll buy another ticket for if they’re ever playing live close by. There’s no way I would give up a chance to listen to them again.

When you mention a Norwegian born band that formed in 1982 and that specialise in synth pop, you would probably be at a loose end to conjure up an accompanying name. But then you recall the song ‘Take on me’ and it all begins to ring a bell. I give you… a-ha. The musical trio from Oslo. With over 80 million albums sold worldwide, and having inspired such bands as Coldplay and Keane, the band is one of the most commercially successful bands in the world. They have produced an incredible nine studio albums and have even performed at the Nobel Peace Prize Ceremony in 1998, alongside such global superstars as Elton John and Shania Twain. The band have reassembled after their split to tour once more and you would be a fool to deny yourself this one chance to see the band reformed in all their former glory. The band performs all their greatest 80s and 90s hits for the crowd, allowing everyone to sing along to each beloved classic. 'The Sun Always Shines on T.V.' and 'Cry Wolf’ take precedence but it is, of course, ‘Take on me’ that ends the night on a climactic high.

The show was excellent. The boys have definitely not lost their touch. Morten´svoice is still young and able to hit the high notes. A good mic of the old hits and some (not very) new material. The arrangements were mostly new and some songs were just unbelievable. As always, the show ended with "Take on me" - this time in an acoustic version with only the 3 guys. Excellent.

The O2 arena is, in my opinion, very good for this kind of music. We were in section 108 so rather far from the stage but with the good acoustics and some help from the screen, it was just great.

What was not so good (and this hurts to say) was the audience around us. 1,5 hours after the show should have started, loads of people with loads of beer were still pouring in. During the show, many seemingly ignored the music, had loud conversations during the show and went in and out for more beer. Very disturbing for us who went there to listen to music. Manners?

I was a little disappointed with A Ha. I didn't feel much energy coming from the stage. The music was great. At one stage Mags commented about the audience being a little flat. But the energy of a gig comes from the stage, feeds the audience, which feeds back to the stage. So it could have been better.

I was not impressed with the venue at all. My wife is in a wheelchair. We were stuck at the side and could only see half the screens at the back of the stage. The downstairs gents toilet had one of only 2 cubicles blocked. One other 2 disabled toilets was blocked. And the bar was rubbish. Poor choice. Poor service. We were at Royal Concert Hall the previous night. A full bar with slick service. Get your act together Armadillo. The audience deserves better.

This was the first time ever I saw A-ha! I grew up with the music because my mom is a big fan of them.

Also, this was the first time I went to HMH (Heineken Music Hall). Most of the time I go to 'metal' concerts and most of the time they preform in 013 Tilburg. So I was pretty excited to go HMH.

I'm disabled and need to sit in a wheelchair, I was really shocked there was no office box or something else. I had to 'stand' in the regular line. People were pushing me and I didn't feel safe.

The show was great and I was shocked Mortan could still sing the high notes! I got goose bumps when they played Hunting high and low!

I had a great time and made my mom very happy with the tickets!

A great evening, eventually, with a well thought out selection of songs from a-ha's 30yr back catalogue along with a good light show. The evening was almost spoilt by Morten seemingly having serious issues with his earpiece which made him appear serious and grumpy for the first half a dozen or so songs. He then explained that due to travel issues from Glasgow the band were unable to soundcheck and so were doing it as they went along. The second half of the concert was far better once he had engaged with the audience. A final encore including The Sun Always Shines on TV, Living Daylights and Take on Me rounded of a thoroughly enjoyable experience.

Absolutely splendid evening.

It was a shaky start with Morten's microphone not working, but it soon improved. All their biggest hits plus a demo version of Train of Thought that was very interesting. The guys still have it...and are looking great.

Highlights were Sun always Shines on TV, I've Been Losing You and Analogue, which they do not sing often enough. I think this was the 13th time I have seen the band, the frst being in 1985, and they certainly did not disappoint.

Amazing! Morten's vocals and the sound was excellent. Would definitely see A-ha again as they are absolutely brilliant live. Played all the classics and some newer tunes too. Would loved to hear more from their Minor Earth, Major Sky or Lifelines albums but ran out of time...too many great songs to fit into one gig!

A nice intimate venue with great acoustics, the Oslo Spektrum was convenient to get to with decent facilities.

Norwegian new-wavers a-ha have achieved remarkable worldwide fame over four decades, and for good reason. Not only are they one of the most influential synth-pop acts to come out of the early '80s, but they set a major precedent for music video innovation with their partially animated "Take On Me" visual, an MTV mainstay at the time.

The trio initially formed in the early 1980s when guitarist Pål Waaktaar-Savoy and keyboardist Magne Furuholmen, formerly of Bridges, teamed up with vocalist Morten Harket. Together, the trio left for London and signed to WEA. Their debut single, "Take On Me," became a smash hit in the United Kingdom, thanks in part to Harket's octave-climbing falsetto. Over in the States, the song's rotoscoping video, which blended pencil-sketch animation with live action, earned heavy rotation on the still relatively young MTV.

A-ha circled back to the charts with their second single, "The Sun Always Shines on T.V.," which went to No. 1 in the UK and peaked at No. 20 on the Billboard Hot 100. In 1986, a-ha's success culminated in a Grammy nomination in the Best New Artist category, though they lost out to Sade.

Meanwhile, a-ha's debut album, Hunting High and Low, was a bestseller, going triple platinum in the UK and platinum in the U.S. To date, it has sold 11 million copies worldwide.

In 1986, a-ha released their sophomore album, Scoundrel Days, featuring the singles "I've Been Losing You," "Cry Wolf," "Maybe, Maybe," and "Manhattan Skyline." It sold more than six million copies worldwide and peaked at No. 2 on the European Top 100 Albums chart.

A-ha followed up with their third studio album, Stay on These Roads, released in 1988. It featured the title track to the 1987 James Bond film The Living Daylights and has sold more than 4.2 million copies worldwide.

The band's fourth studio album, East of the Sun, West of the Moon, came out in 1990 and featured a cover of the Everly Brothers' "Crying in the Rain." In 1991, the band hit a Guinness World Record for biggest rock audience attendance at the Rock in Rio II festival, which drew a crowd of 198,000.

A-ha released their fifth album, Memorial Beach, in 1993, featuring the single "Dark is the Night for All," which peaked at No. 19 in the UK. At the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, a-ha performed two concerts and wrote a song for the games: "Shapes That Go Together." That same year, a-ha went on hiatus, and the band members pursued individual projects.

In 1998, a-ha reunited for the Nobel Peace Prize Concert. Their reunion eventually led to the recording of a new album, 2000's Minor Earth Major Sky, plus an international tour. In 2003, a-ha released a live album from their 2002 tour, titled How Can I Sleep with Your Voice in My Head. This was followed by a 2005 album, Analogue, which earned the band their first Top 10 hit in the UK since 1988.

After 2005's Analogue, a-ha released three more albums: 2009's Foot of the Mountain, 2015's Cast in Steel, and 2022's True North (coming in October 2022). In 2021, the documentary a-ha: The Movie premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York.

Though a-ha remain best known in the U.S. for their first-ever single, the trio is by far the most successful pop act to come from their home country of Norway. They have influenced numerous contemporary pop performers, most notably Chris Martin of Coldplay and Pitbull, the latter who featured a sampling of "Take On Me" in his 2013 single with Christina Aguilera, "Feel This Moment."

I’m 8 and I love all your songs especially take me on

Most awesome band & great music!!!

I went to a-ha's concerts in NYC & Napa; both were very memorable & I had a great time. I love love love a-ha for their superb music, performances, and who they are, how wonderful human beings; also how they are twrds fans are kind, fantastic, & really appreciative. a-ha fans were very amicable & well-mannered to each other, too at these venues; what a bonus! Beautiful lighting & sound qualities at both venues, especially NYC Radio City Music Hall was excellent. I can't wait for their next concerts. Their latest album, True North, is moving, exciting, and beautiful.

Spectacular!

They band is as lively and sharp as ever. Fantastic show and musicianship. Intimate venue made for an up close and personal performance that I'll remember for the rest of my days. The set focused on their earlier work, which is always a treat to hear live. Can't wait for the next tour and new album.

I would go again and again and again

a-ha had 6 shows in the US in 2022 I went to 5 of them and I would do it all over again

Great Show!!

Not sure what to expect as I have never seen a-ha and I was pleasantly surprised. They were amazing, great musicians and Morten still has a great presence. Made me a bigger fan than I was before and made me regret never seeing them in the past. But will never miss a Bay Area show again when they come back.

Long walk to get in the venue

This venue is great except that it's a pretty long walk to get in. You have to walk down from the street under the bridge and around. I brought my mother who has trouble walking for too long and it would have been a lot better if they had an entrance up at the street level. This was my first time there, I asked staff if they had a "handicap" entrance and they said no. Other then that we had a great time! Drinks we're priced ok (not too high) and there we're plenty of toilets. The lawn was great to dance around (for me). Seeing A-ha was my little girls dream!

A-ha at Oxbow RiverStage

Great show from A-Ha in a nice summer outdoors venue. Morten still has a great voice and the sound system brought out the band's sound clearly. Good view from our section Bronze section in the back without anybody blocking the views of the stage. Nice to also have some food and drinks available for purchase.

It was like a dream...

One of the best bands in the world. Their passion for music can be seen and heard! 11 albums later and they still blow me away. I hope they tour again in the USA. Not to be missed.

fun, self-aware artists

I was surprised at how many people attended who were BIG fans and knew all the songs. I personally only knew two songs but still had a great time. Even though I didn't know the specific songs, I knew the sound and got a good 80s fix. Very personable with the audience and poked fun at their one-hit-wonder status.

Great show, great band

The music and performance were amazing. The band had really good energy, and played a bunch of classics in addition to one of their new songs. Venue was easy to access and a great place for a show.

The first part of a new Fan Q&A with Paul was posted on a-ha.com this week.

In it, he reveals that Savoy’s Under will be getting a CD release next month. Originally the album was only released physically on vinyl, but many fans have requested it on CD as well.

The CD can now be pre-ordered from edda.tigernet.no , with a March 15th release date.

Paul also shared exciting plans for the Savoy back-catalogue: “With SAVOY we have remastered the back-catalogue of albums yet to be digitally released which we’ll get to after ‘Under’. Vinyl & CD could happen too. We’ll also be going back to the master tapes for hi-res versions of all our videos and documentaries so they can be added to our YouTube Savoy channel.”

There is work being done on the a-ha back-catalogue as well: “a-ha are in the process of making sure all the albums are available on all the platforms in extended deluxe versions, and I’m sure there will be vinyl/CD’s available at times too.”

And he says his Waaktaar solo album will finally be released later this year: “At this point it can venture off in different directions but I’m pretty happy with the material.”

There is also a new interview with Paul on the Norwegian music site Popklikk .

Paul and Lauren on BBC radio

aha tour 2024

On stage with Savoy

Paul and Lauren were interviewed by Richard Green on BBC Radio Devon on Saturday, February 10th. The whole 14-minute interview is available at bbc.co.uk .

Lauren on the reception the album is getting: “[We’re] super proud and very excited. It’s such a good feeling when you work so hard – just the two of us, working away – that when it goes out there, some people do recognize it and like it.”

Paul on possible Savoy concerts: “We’d love to, it would really be nice. Lauren is the only one I know that hasn’t had Covid yet, so she’s very careful and that might present some challenge to travel around a lot. But we would absolutely love to play live, so we’re looking into it.”

Paul was also asked if there is any possibility of a-ha getting together again: “[True North] was a strange period, because we were in the middle of the Hunting High and Low Tour – and that got postponed so many times – so we never got around to actually touring the True North album. We sort of ran out of time.

And with a-ha, we’ve always done things in an ebb and flow sort of style. We do one thing, then we retract and then we come back and do something else. There’s always things being discussed. I think our fans know us. We come back when we feel “OK, now we’re gonna do something”. It could definitely happen.”

Paul was also interviewed on the radio show Kveldsåpent on NRK P1 earlier this week, but the audio is unfortunately not available online . Update (21/2): The interview is now available.

And although Under is the first Savoy album that has failed to enter the official Norwegian Top 40 album chart, it continues to garner positive feedback from fans and critics.

Puls ‘ reviewer describes the album as really excellent pop/rock, and that “Coming Down” sounds like something Paul McCartney would wish he’d written. He also praises Waaktaar’s ability to come up with “quirky chord progressions” in his songs: “The ones that turn up unexpectedly, outside the box – but still slide into the ear canal like cream on strawberries. Listen to the opening track “Lonely Surfer”, and I’m sure you’ll understand what I mean”.

Popklikk gives special mention to the album’s production and vocal deliveries: “The music has been placed inside a modern and meticulously crafted production, where a vital and playful soundscape adds a fine mixture of pleasure and energy to the songs. A production that has room for both string arrangements and electronic equipment. One of the best things about ‘Under’ is how the couple Paul and Lauren sing so beautifully throughout the album, both individually and together. While the frequent backing vocals add freshness to the music and acts like a melodic supplement.”

Norway Rock ‘s album review (in English) is more lukewarm, but does highlight the production and other high-quality elements: “The title track has an excellent Bowie-esque chorus (and there are echoes of his work and sound throughout, along with Beatles and Beck), “Life and Times of a Wannabe” has some first-rate guitar work on it, edgy riffs and some good textures. Likewise, “Coming Down”, which also exemplifies Frode Unneland’s drumming on the record, which is generally prominent in the mix, and with good reason, as it carries the record along well.”

Frode: “We are very satisfied with the album”

Frode Unneland

Savoy drummer Frode Unneland was the main guest on the Norwegian radio show Stjernepose on NRK P13 this week, to talk about the new Savoy album Under .

Below are some translated quotes from the conversation.

On the album: “We are very satisfied with it. It was an easy recording process and it’s a very structured and cohesive album. To us there’s a common thread throughout the concept that is ‘Under’. Paul has said that many of the songs were written during Covid lockdowns. His lyrics are personal, but I can relate to the loneliness that he describes. Walking down empty streets and so on.”

Starting the recording process: “a-ha had finished their [2022] tour and Paul was staying for a week in Oslo, alone in their house. He called me up and asked if I wanted to come over, drink some wine and listen to some new songs he’d made.

When I entered his home studio he had put up a large sheet of paper with 13 songs on it, and we just started at the top of the list. He had already recorded some rough demos that I played along to, and then I was able to add my own drumming style to that. It was really fun to play on this album, because things started to gel really fast. We did all the songs in around three days.”

Old and new: “On this album there’s one song that we’ve recorded a few times before, but never made the cut because we weren’t quite happy with it. But this time we suddenly figured it out. But Paul is constantly writing new material, and sometimes he’s amassed a lot of songs that he needs to release – or at least record.”

Across the Atlantic: “So we did the initial recordings very quickly, but then he went home to the US and continued working from there. He’s in California, I’m in Norway, but he’ll send me video clips from the studio of things he’s working on, like a new keyboard part or guitar part. And he’s eager to get my feedback.”

Recording his own vocals: “All my own vocal tracks were recorded in the bedroom of our house [in Bergen], and that worked really well. It’s the first time that I’ve recorded something without Paul being present. But I don’t know much about using computers to record things, so I enlisted the help of my youngest son Filip. So on the cover it says “engineered by Filip Unneland” and that’s really cool. And Paul really loved how it sounded, so he gifted him a black Ludwig drum kit and lots of compressors and microphones.”

Why Savoy rarely play live: “The [2018] concert [in Oslo] was incredibly fun. After the show everyone were like “we need to do this again!”. But then another a-ha tour got in the way. That’s what happens. (…) There’s also the challenge of hiring new backing musicians and rehearsing extensively – yet again. Although Paul knows that I’d do it in a heartbeat. But we do get lots of offers to play live, here and there. Paul’s latest suggestion was that perhaps I could put together a Savoy cover band, that would have been much easier! [laughs]”

New Savoy album Under out now

aha tour 2024

This is the Transparent Orange version of the vinyl. Transparent Lime and Black are also available.

Savoy’s seventh studio album Under is released on their own label Eleventeen Records today. Available now digitally on streaming , or physically on vinyl . It doesn’t seem like there will be a CD version this time.

The 10-track album has been produced and arranged by Savoy, mixed by Simon Vinestock and mastered by Joe Lambert. It features contributions from familiar names such as Hågen Rørmark, Per Hillestad, Joe Mardin and True August. Frode Unneland’s son Filip is credited as one of the engineers.

The music video for latest single “Coming Down” has also premiered today and can be seen on YouTube . Directed by Jason Brandenberg.

The newspaper Dagsavisen gives the album 5/6 in its review (paywall), highlighting the title track: ” “Under” is a guitar-driven song where the chorus sounds like something David Bowie could have made after his late comeback, a melancholic pop song kept in a psychedelic drive and with large contrasts in both the vocals and arrangements. This is Savoy at their most experimental, but also at their most accessible. Some of the same Bowie-esque way of singing can be heard in “Lonesome Alone”, while the production on the album consistently builds intricate layers of atmosphere, sounds and nice details, especially in the guitar playing and some of the string arrangements.”

Dagsavisen’s reviewer also mentions “Camden Palace Chronicles” as another highlight on the album, calling it “a pop-aesthetic jewel of a song, with beautiful vocals from Lauren” . He concludes that “Under is more proof that some of the best and most ambitious music Paul Waaktaar-Savoy has written (with Lauren), he’s kept for himself and for Savoy”.

Another positive review of Under comes from Dagens Næringsliv (paywall): “Their seventh studio album Under sounds quite inspired. This is their best album in a long time, featuring ten well-written quality songs. (…) It’s a consistent record, but check out songs like “Digital River” and “Pure as Driven Snow” as examples of excellent, mature pop.”

Two-page interview with Lauren and Paul in Klassekampen, 2 February.

Meanwhile, Klassekampen has interviewed Paul and Lauren across two pages in today’s paper issue (paywall).

“The move [to LA] has given us new impulses and influenced the finished result quite a lot” , Paul says of the new album.

“We have also found inspiration from musicians who have worked here, like the Laurel Canyon-scene in the 1960s and 70s” , Lauren adds. “A song like “Station” is somewhat inspired by The Mamas & the Papas, with its layered vocals”.

They both mention Frode as being a very important part of the band: “Frode spreads a lot of good energy around. His vocal parts are also an integral part of our sound, as on the new song “Pure as Driven Snow”” , Paul says.

They refer to each song on Under as its own journey and what Paul calls pieces of the big puzzle: “At the same time we’re chasing that feeling of goosebumps. Most of the songs have been through many versions, and in the end you just have to trust your gut feeling” .

“With this trio of ours we don’t have to think about ticket sales, endless touring and all that. In Savoy we’re doing this out of love for the music and because we want to create something we’re proud of” , Paul says.

New Savoy single “Coming Down”

aha tour 2024

Single cover (photo by Paul)

“Coming Down” is the fourth single off Savoy’s upcoming album Under , and is released today. The song is available on Spotify , Apple Music etc, and has also been posted on YouTube . A music video is on the way, according to Paul .

VG has reviewed “Coming Down”, giving it 4/6: “Even 28 years into their career, it’s fair to describe the collaboration between the married couple Waaktaar-Savoy and Bergen drum genius Frode Unneland as a “con amore” project. As with any labour of love, [Savoy] just keep getting better and better as the years go by. “Coming Down” is a soft reflection about places you’ve been and places where others are. A simple tune, really. But then Paul Waaktaar-Savoy sings so softly and beautifully that you just have to adore it.”

A-ha (usually stylized as a-ha; Norwegian pronunciation: [ɑˈhɑː]) is a Norwegian band formed in Oslo in 1982. Founded by Morten Harket (vocals, guitars), Magne Furuholmen (keyboards, guitars) and Paul Waaktaar-Savoy (guitars), the band rose to fame during the mid-1980s after being discovered by musician and producer John Ratcliff, and continued its global success in the 1990s and 2000s. A-ha achieved their biggest success with their debut album Hunting High and Low in 1985. That album peaked at number one in their native Norway, number 2 in the UK, and number 15 on the US Billboard album chart; yielded two international number-one singles: ""Take On Me"" and ""The Sun Always Shines on TV""; and earned the band a Grammy Award nomination as Best New Artist. In the UK, Hunting High and Low continued its chart success into the following year, becoming one of the best-selling albums of 1986. In 1994, after their fifth studio album, Memorial Beach, failed to achieve the commercial success of their previous albums, the band went on a hiatus. Following a performance at the Nobel Peace Prize Concert in 1998, the band returned to the studio and recorded their sixth album, 2000's Minor Earth Major Sky, which was another number-one hit in Norway and resulted in a new tour. A seventh studio album, Lifelines, was released in 2002, and an eighth album, Analogue, in 2005, was certified Silver in the UK – their most successful album there since 1990's East of the Sun, West of the Moon. Their ninth album, Foot of the Mountain, was first released on 19 June 2009 and returned the band to the UK top 5 for the first time since 1988, being certified Silver there and Platinum in Germany. The album peaked at number 2 in Norway (their first release not to reach number one in their home territory). On 15 October 2009, the band announced they would split after a worldwide tour in 2010, the Ending on a High Note Tour. Thousands of fans from at least 40 different countries on six continents congregated to see A-ha for the last leg of the tour. On 4 December 2014, A-ha officially announced its participation at Rock In Rio 2015 which celebrated 30 years for both the band and the event. In 2015, it was announced that A-ha would re-unite for two years. Their tenth studio album, Cast in Steel, was released on 4 September 2015. A tour, named for the album, in support of the album happened in autumn 2015 and March–May 2016. The band has released ten studio albums, several compilations and four live albums. In less than a year, during 2010, the band earned an estimated 500 million Norwegian Kroner from concert tickets, merchandise and the release of a greatest hits album, making them one of the 40–50 largest grossing bands in the world. The band were listed in the Guinness World Records book for having the biggest rock concert attendance; they drew an audience of 198,000 at Maracanã Stadium during Rock in Rio festival. Another record for the band is for singer Morten Harket, who was (and is still) listed in the Guinness World Records book in 2001 for the longest live note held; he held a note in ""Summer Moved On"" for 20.2 seconds. According to their label, Rhino, they have sold 55 million records.

a-ha is a norwegian new wave band that has been globally successful since the 1980s. The trio, composed of lead vocalist Morten Harket, guitarist Paul Waaktaar-Savoy and keyboardist Magne Furuholmen, formed in 1982 and left Norway for London in order to make a career in the music business. The origin of the name a-ha comes from the lyric of an early song. After checking dictionaries in several languages, they found out that \'a-ha\' was an international way of expressing recognition, with positive connotations. It was short, a-ha was easy to say and somewhat unusual.

Alex Cuba Embraces His Original Sound

aha tour 2024

Alex Cuba , born Alexis Puentes, thrives on a free-flowing creative process. The Cuban-Canadian singer-songwriter “receives” his inspiration in moments when music is the last thing on his mind. If he’s on a plane and an idea strikes, he’ll retreat to the bathroom and record the melody. “Way up in the sky, you know,” he laughed. “Close to God, I guess.”

Cuba’s commitment to artistic freedom has fueled a remarkable career with nearly 100 million streams and a shelf overflowing with accolades — a Grammy, four Latin Grammys, and two JUNO Awards. A talented songwriter, he is also the creative force behind half of Canadian icon Nelly Furtado’s acclaimed Spanish album, Mi Plan . Currently on his national 17-date Paralelo Tour, the singer will perform at SOhO Restaurant & Music Club on Wednesday, May 8. He hopes to share new music while on tour and is excited about his stop in Santa Barbara — a place he’s never been.

The 50-year-old is calling in from Canada, where he’s lived since 1999. Originally from Artemisa, Cuba, he shared that music comes from his father’s side. His father, Valentin Puentes, was a music educator in Cuba and taught him how to play guitar when he was 6. He locked himself in his room practicing for so long that his parents sometimes had to remind him to eat. Cuba shared that by the time he was 16, he was the best bass player in his town.

When I asked him to describe his sound, he said that he loves when people ask him that question because it gives him trouble. Sure, he grew up listening to Cuban music and is heavily influenced by it, but his goal as an artist is to explore all sounds. You can’t confine him to a box, nor does he want that. He hopes everyone, Latin or not, can relate to his music. “If I was inside a box, you would have to be a fan of Latin music to understand,” he said. Drawing influence from many different genres of music, he’s formed a sound that “transcends culture.” Even if you can’t understand what he says, you can feel the beat — find meaning in the melody.

He taps into his Cuban roots through percussion instruments like the Afro-Cuban shekere. “There is no Cuban music without those instruments,” he said. Cuba sings in both Spanish and English and incorporates the sounds of jazz, folk, and funk, making for very groovy melodies.

Authenticity is very important to him. Who is he, if not his true self? “I’m not afraid of sounding original,” he said. “I’m not afraid of sounding different.” He feels most like himself when playing solo shows around Canada. He has immersed himself in Canadian culture and said he feels comfortable playing for an English-speaking audience and being an ambassador of Latin and Cuban culture in Canada.

aha tour 2024

Cuba’s laughter was contagious throughout our conversation. His positive energy is palpable. While his music is filled with uplifting messages, he readily admits that even positive people get down sometimes, and when that happens, he’s not interested in making music. “But when I’m at peace, when I’m happy, I tell you, it’s like a river coming on me.”

When inspiration does strike, he acts immediately. When the pandemic hit, he turned his living room into a recording studio. The album he recorded there, Mendó , won a Grammy in 2022 for Best Latin Pop as a producer, artist, and engineer. He assures me that he does have a proper studio now.

With a discography of nine albums, Cuba isn’t slowing down anytime soon. “They have been having a hard time keeping me down,” said Cuba on his work ethic. He is releasing a new album on May 31 called Voices of My Family . This collection of songs is unique from his previous works in that it includes the voice of his aunt from Cuba, who has dementia. During the pandemic, his cousin sent him recordings of her singing a capella. He heard a “beautiful voice that no one in the family knew she had.” He received more recordings and added backing vocals, sound, and harmony. “This album has a strong feeling of love and unity,” he said.

An Evening with Alex Cuba takes place at SOhO on Wednesday, May 8. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., with his performance scheduled for 8 p.m. To purchase tickets, see sohosb.com .

Ann & Nancy Wilson Set to Reunite in 2024 Heart Tour

T he rock band Heart , best known for their songs “Barracuda,” “Crazy on You” and “These Dreams” has been on and off since they started in 1973. Sisters and bandmates Ann and Nancy Wilson have had their share of ups and downs together but now they are back with a new tour. The Royal Flush Tour is going to be the first time they have toured together since 2019 and to prepare for the tour, the sisters had to have some true heart-to-hearts.

Ann admitted , “We’re talking. We’re fine together. We just felt it, so why not? The common ground is that we both want it to be excellent and we both want it to be absolutely Heart. We just basically put it together and said, ‘Let’s go!’” The sisters revealed that their first band breakup came in 1977 when there was a legal fight between two record companies that halted their music releases. Then in 1995, Nancy wanted to take a break from music to raise her family.

In 2016, things got worse for the sisters when Ann’s husband was arrested for allegedly striking one of Nancy’s children. Of course, this caused some issues between the sisters and threatened the ongoing music creation and touring for the band. While they toured again in 2019, things were reportedly still very tense.

Nancy said, “There’s so many things, circumstantially, since 2019. A lot of it’s just family drama and unavoidable, and just other stuff people wanted to do besides Heart. So we were off doing our own things for a little while, and there was also this little interruption called the pandemic.” Both sisters released solo music in recent years but now they are back at it, visiting cities around the country such as Detroit, New Orleans, and San Antonio.

TobyMac remembers Mandisa after Christian singer's death, 'I know her battle is over ...'

aha tour 2024

Many in the Christian music industry and beyond have posted on social media to celebrate the life of and mourn the loss of singer Mandisa Hundley who was found dead last week at the age of 47.

Amy Grant said in an Instagram post that "Mandisa's smile was like turning on sunshine." Matthew West said he will "always cherish the memories of times we spent together hosting awards shows, going on tour and most of all helping tell her story in the songwriting room."

But few worked as closely with Mandisa as friend and frequent collaborator TobyMac (Toby McKeehan), who posted over the weekend that we "lost a beautiful soul."

McKeehan and Hundley collaborated on songs such as "Lose My Soul," "Good Mornin'" and "Bleed the Same."

"I have never met an artist who is more encouraging and supportive to other artists than Mandisa," McKeehan said on social media

"She was honest and authentic but I always left her side feeling better. She watched every act, every night on every tour singing along with a smile that made you feel alive... I was honored to call her friend. She was honest about her struggles and viewed her breakthroughs as an opportunity to let others know that they can experience victories just like her. She saw us as a family. God’s family. In all our diversity. All flawed. And all in need of the love of a Good Father, a Heavenly Father. I know her battle is over but I will always treasure her memory and that smile and infectious laugh that I had the pleasure of experiencing."

Hundley was found dead in her Franklin home on April 18. An active death investigation is underway by the Franklin Police Department.

After growing up in California, Hundley attended Fisk University in Nashville and was a member of the famed Fisk University Jubilee singers. She graduated from Fisk in 2000 with a bachelor's degree in music, according to the university.

In 2005, Hundley auditioned for "American Idol" in Chicago, where she went on to finish in the final nine.

Highlighting the impact of Texas Tech’s Innovation Hub at Research Park

The Hub plays a significant role in entrepreneur Abigail Rosilier’s company.

On the corner of Fourth Street and Texas Tech Parkway is a 44,000-square-foot pillar of light for West Texas entrepreneurs. Texas Tech University 's Innovation Hub at Research Park signifies that the future is more attainable today than ever before.

The Hub has 15 entrepreneurial programs to assist startups, including seed funding. These are tools that aid new entrepreneurs of the Hub to outline progress and obtain their goals.

In 2023, the Innovation Hub startup companies raised $8 million in capital investments and were awarded 68 new trademarks, patents, and/or copyrights. The Hub has 60 industry mentors supporting startups with over 7,000 volunteer mentor hours logged last year.

Abby and her brother Zach

“We're all about economic development -- we want students at Texas Tech to learn here, grow their company here and stay in West Texas,” said Taysha Williams managing director at the Innovation Hub.

The Hub has multiple startup initiatives such as its Texas Tech Accelerator Program that supports entrepreneurs launching innovative startups. This is a year-long program that includes $25,000 in funding, mentors, monthly business bootcamps and additional resources. The Hub is a space for collaboration and ideation, providing entrepreneurial minds with all the resources and connections needed to be successful.

The Accelerator program is on its seventh cohort of entrepreneurs, comprising eight startups. One of those is abbyrose , a phone case company started by current Jerry S. Rawls College of Business student Abigail Rosilier. She is set to graduate in May with a bachelor's in business management and several years of business experience.

Being a college student is difficult enough, but Rosilier has managed to juggle school and a successful business throughout her college career.

“I struggle with that. I would love to feel like I have it all down, but I don't,” Rosilier said humbly. “It's definitely hard, but I find the more I have on my plate the more scheduled I become. Some advice I would give is make your schedule and hold yourself accountable. You'll find a groove.”

Rosilier always has had an entrepreneurial spirit. She had a few stints with small businesses, beginning in the fifth grade, that she'd start and end often within a few months.

Rosilier began abbyrose as a 16-year-old in her parents' garage during her junior year of high school. She transitioned to homeschooling due to the demanding training schedule of competing in acrobatic gymnastics. She credits acro with shaping her into the person she is today, beginning the sport at age 5. Turns out acro gymnastics also helped with abbyrose because of the connections it afforded her.

“I had so many connections and friends from different states because I was constantly competing,” Rosilier said. “That was a lot of help when I first started abbyrose because I started selling to people in Maryland and California. It was good to have a ton of friends in different states.”

Rosilier explained she had a phone case business in years prior to starting abbyrose, but like before, ended it within a few months.

“Theres no ‘aha moment' that was like, let me do cases. It'll do so well,” said Rosilier. “It was kind of just like, I have the stuff. I haven't done a business in a while and I'm homeschooled now for my sport, so might as well try it again.”

When she tried again, she was met with a resounding response as abbyrose has amassed nearly 500 thousand followers and over 15 million likes across social media platforms. Rosilier runs the company with the help of her three siblings and her mother.

The family-owned and operated business continues to flourish with the support of The Hub.

“I started with their iLaunch Competition, their version of ‘Shark Tank,' and then the Texas Tech Accelerator, and then I got an office,” said Rosilier. “It all just kind of fell into place – opened so many doors that you didn't even know could be opened.

“We got into the TTU Accelerator Program a year ago. I've never had mentors before; they helped us focus on the important things. We were trying to launch five products at once, and they were like, ‘You need to scale.'”

abbyrose logo

Taking one glance at Rosilier's office space at the Hub, her room or even her company's logo you may notice a common theme: pink, and lots of it. Her favorite color covers her well-organized office floor to wall. The office is filled with equipment she uses to promote her products on social media like ring lights, phone stands and bins filled with phone cases.

“I'm there every day,” said Rosilier. “It's such a good environment there, you'll want to go and stay because there's such good energy. The Hub has so many opportunities constantly. They've helped literally in every way possible.”
