1. Is it safe to travel to Iceland?
Iceland is a very safe place to visit. You’ll find it’s a peaceful country with one of the lowest crime rates in the world. And it’s good to know that Iceland has excellent, modern healthcare services.
As you may already know, Iceland does have active volcanoes but eruptions occur once every 4 years on average. There’s also minor seismic activity on the island, but noticeable earthquakes are rare and the Icelandic Met Office keeps a good eye on these.
Your dedicated, Iceland-based travel consultant will stay on top of these matters, as well as changing weather reports, to keep you safe on your journey. Don’t hesitate to ask the locals for directions or advice either, as Icelanders are used to travellers and tend to be helpful.
For the latest visitor guidance, you can check this Iceland travel update or read our blog: Is Iceland safe to visit ?
2. What language do people speak in Iceland?
Icelandic is the official language of Iceland . It derives from a North Germanic language similar to Old Norse that has changed little since the Viking times. You’ll get by very easily with English in Iceland though, as most locals speak it. Many are multilingual in other Nordic or European languages as well.
If you want to learn some local lingo, then here are some basic words and phrases to practise:
- Já = Yes
- Góðan daginn / Góðan dag = Good day
- Gott kvöld = Good evening
- Hæ / Halló = Hi / Hello
- Bless = Goodbye
- Takk = Thank you
3. What is the best time of year to go to Iceland?
The best time to visit Iceland depends on the attractions, regions and activities you want to experience.
For instance, you’ll have milder temperatures and longer daylight hours in the summer compared to the winter, which means more opportunities to explore.
With better weather, you can access remote regions – like the Westfjords and central highlands – between May and September. The mountain roads here close in winter as driving conditions are too difficult.
This makes Iceland summer tours ideal if you’d like to spend lots of time outdoors, discovering the island’s many natural wonders. It’s also the best time to see wildlife, like puffins and whales, and to enjoy activities like hiking.
On the other hand, if you’re keen to chase the northern lights, you’ll have a better chance of seeing them if you visit Iceland in winter . The reason is that the nights are long between October and April, so you’ll have more hours of darkness to spot the colours of the aurora.
Time your Iceland trip for the winter months, and you’ll also get to soak up landscapes draped in frost and snow. You may wish to discover Iceland at Christmas or New Year to revel in the festive atmosphere.
For more advice on when to go, check out these guides:
- Best time to visit Iceland
- Iceland in summer
- Iceland in winter
4. When and where can you see the northern lights in Iceland?
The best time to take a northern lights tour in Iceland is during the winter season, between October and April. At this time of year, you have a higher chance of spotting the aurora borealis because the nights are dark enough to see the lights shine and flicker.
For the best chance of viewing the aurora borealis, visit secluded areas away from the light pollution of towns and cities. The darker conditions will allow you to make out the colours of the northern lights more vividly.
Read these guides for more information about the aurora borealis:
- What are the northern lights?
- How to see the aurora borealis

5. How many days do I need to visit Iceland?
There is so much to see and do in Iceland that you should decide your trip duration according to how many days or weeks you have to spare.
For a short break in Iceland, your best bet is to explore Reykjavík and the surroundings. Within 4 days you could visit the capital’s many museums, shops, galleries and restaurants. There are thermal pools to swim in and festive markets at Christmastime.
You could also see top sights like Gullfoss waterfall, Þingvellir National Park, and the Geysir geothermal area, which includes the hot spring Strokkur. These are all part of the Golden Circle driving route in the south. You can experience the Golden Circle on a day trip from the capital, or over the course of a few days.
Or extend your itinerary and see more of South Iceland . In 7 days you’d get to visit black sand beaches, glaciers, and other breathtaking natural attractions that Iceland’s south coast is known for. Don’t miss the chance to bathe in the mineral-rich waters of the Blue Lagoon, an inviting geothermal pool.
Another great option is to visit West Iceland . Enjoy a northern lights adventure in the remote Westfjords, or head to the Snæfellsnes peninsula.
Called “Iceland in miniature”, the Snæfellsnes peninsula is just 90 kilometres (56 miles) long and has a bit of everything. Discover volcanoes, lava fields, waterfalls, hot springs and fishing villages here.
If you have between 10 days and 2 weeks to spare, then you’ll get to see the many beautiful corners of Iceland. As well as the southern and western regions, you can explore East Iceland and visit North Iceland too by travelling the country’s Ring Road.
Venture east to admire fjords and gaze upon the mighty Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, where icebergs float on the blue waters. Continue north to Akureyri and the Lake Mývatn area to marvel at the Krafla volcano, mud pools and craters. You can warm up with a dip in the Mývatn Nature Baths.
Essentially, the more days you have to spend in Iceland then the more you will get to experience. In winter you’ll also increase your chances of spotting the northern lights!
Check out our blog for inspiration on how many days to spend in Iceland .
6. What are the best things to do in Iceland?
Iceland may be small, but it packs a punch with its wild scenery, intriguing culture and mind-boggling natural wonders. Here are some of the top things to do in Iceland :
- Marvel at waterfalls
- Hike in national parks
- Dip in hot springs and pools
- Hunt for the northern lights
- Walk along black sand beaches
- Taste Icelandic cuisine
- Admire glacier lagoons
- Venture into ice caves or lava tunnels
- Learn about Icelandic legends
- Look for whales and puffins
- See geothermal wonders and volcanoes
- Go horse riding
Read more on our blog about the best Iceland tours to add to your itinerary .
7. What’s the best way to travel in Iceland?
The best way to explore Iceland depends on what you wish to do and how flexible you’d like the tours to be.
Iceland self-drive packages are ideal if you want to set the pace and travel independently. On a road trip, you can take your time discovering top sights and explore off the beaten track. You also have more flexible timings and the freedom to go further afield for excursions and restaurants.
Another excellent way to travel is with a knowledgeable guide and a small group of fellow travellers. Nordic Visitor’s escorted group tours of Iceland give you the opportunity to learn from a local. They’ll take you to each attraction and share their knowledge and favourite spots.
Nordic Visitor only organises small minibus tours with a maximum of 16 people. This ensures you have a more relaxed and personal experience compared to large coach trips. This is a popular choice for our many solo guests and for those who don’t feel comfortable driving.
If you want something exclusive and would prefer to travel alone or with friends or family members, then choose from our privately guided tours of Iceland . You’ll have a local guide all to yourselves for a more personal experience.
Or you could pick an Iceland multi-day package : a city stay with quality-tested accommodation and activities arranged each day. You’ll get to enjoy guided excursions with local experts, but then have free days to explore on your own.
If you want more information, contact our Iceland team and they will help you decide which travel style would suit you best.
8. Who are Nordic Visitor’s Iceland travel experts?
Nordic Visitor is proud to be a local tour operator in Iceland. Reykjavík – the capital city – is where we are headquartered, and it is where the company was founded in 2002. Our Iceland travel agents are based here and have extensively explored the country.
You’ll be assigned a dedicated travel consultant who will use their in-depth knowledge to arrange your Iceland tour for you. They’ll share personal recommendations and can customise your itinerary to match your particular interests.
Find out more about Nordic Visitor and our passionate travel experts.

11. Why use Nordic Visitor instead of booking everything myself?
At Nordic Visitor, we’ll save you time and effort by planning your getaway for you, based on your needs and requests.
When you arrange your trip yourself, you have to carry out all the research and book all parts of your tour separately. If you need to make changes to your itinerary, you have to do all the legwork yourself.
Nordic Visitor takes care of everything on your behalf so you can relax and look forward to your trip.
Our travel experts will design your route, planned in a way that’s both comfortable and convenient. For example, they’ll ensure you don’t cover the same stretch of road twice unnecessarily. They’ll also book you into high-quality accommodation, and share all their insider tips with you.
This means you can leave all the hassle of trip-planning to the experts, who are based in Iceland. They know the country inside out, so you can rely on them to incorporate the best sights and hidden gems that you wouldn’t otherwise know about.
What’s more, you get access to our 24/7 helpline during your trip. Should you need any support, we are only a call away. And if you need to make changes to your itinerary for any reason, you can leave all of that to us as well.
12. Do I need a visa to go to Iceland?
Fortunately, if you’re arriving from Canada, the United States, United Kingdom, Australia or New Zealand, you will not need a visa to visit Iceland. You must have a valid passport with at least 3 months left before it expires.
If you’re visiting from outside of these countries, you will need to apply for a Schengen visa to enter Iceland. This is a short-stay visa that permits you to travel to Schengen Area member countries for up to 90 days.
Read more about getting to Iceland on our travel guide.
13. What sort of accommodation will I stay in?
Having a clean, comfortable and friendly place to lay your head after an exciting day of exploring Iceland is really important. That’s why we use our in-depth local knowledge to handpick the most suitable accommodation in Iceland for you.
The hotels and guesthouses you will experience on your Iceland tour are all highly rated by visitors. Our local experts have carefully selected each accommodation partner for their exceptional standards of quality, location and character.
As our Iceland travel team is based locally, we have close connections with our suppliers and we visit them regularly. This is why we are confident that the accommodation on your trip with us will meet or even exceed your expectations.
14. Will Nordic Visitor customise my Iceland tour?
Yes, it’s easy to make customisations to your tour online. Add extra nights, upgrades and day trips to your liking as you go through the booking steps. If you’d like to personalise your itinerary further, be sure to ask your dedicated travel consultant.
They will happily tailor your tour to suit your tastes and preferences. You may have particular interests, such as northern lights, hiking, photography or wildlife. Perhaps there are certain places that hold special significance to you.
If you’re visiting Iceland with kids , your personal consultant will make sure every part of your itinerary is suitable for the whole family. Or if you’re on a honeymoon or anniversary trip in Iceland , they’ll gladly add romantic touches to make your couples break extra special.
Most of our travel styles are flexible. But bear in mind that small group packages are a little different, as you are on a fixed itinerary for the duration of the guided tour. However, you can add extra nights to the beginning or end of your trip.
15. Can I choose the arrival date?
You can choose from a wide range of arrival dates depending on the package and season you are interested in. All of our tours are available to purchase online, so pick the best date for you from the availability calendar.
If your travel plans have changed and you want to amend your arrival date, contact your travel consultant to rearrange your booking.
16. Will Nordic Visitor book my flights to Iceland?
Your flights to Iceland are not included in our packages. This gives you greater flexibility and allows you to save money by using your airline miles or taking advantage of airfare sales.
17. When should I book my flight tickets?
We recommend that you check flights for timings and dates, but do not purchase them until you’ve booked your Nordic Visitor tour. Once you’ve had a confirmation email from your personal travel consultant, you should then choose and pay for your flights.
Nordic Visitor packages come with daily itineraries and all of your accommodation organised for you. So once you have all of the arrangements confirmed, you can make an informed choice on your flight times. If you have any questions, you can always contact your consultant for advice.
18. What to pack for Iceland?
Due to its northerly location, Iceland’s climate is cool. And as you’ll probably want to spend time outdoors on your trip, it’s best to be prepared for all kinds of weather.
Here’s our recommended packing list for Iceland :
- Walking boots or shoes with good grip
- Waterproof jacket and trousers
- Insulated jacket
- Woollen or fleece jumpers
- Thermal base layers
- Warm hat, scarf and gloves
- Warm hiking socks
- Quick-drying travel towel
You can read more about what to wear in Iceland on our experts’ blog.

Discover the Amazing Northern lights
From September through April, the Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights can be seen in all parts of Iceland so long as the sky is clear and it is dark. Areas that are not subject to "light pollution" are the best places to watch for the lights. Areas in the Icelandic countryside tend to be best. Researchers have discovered that auroral activity is cyclic, peaking roughly every 11 years.

Why Iceland?
Is Iceland one of the most beautiful countries on Earth ? Well, it's for you to find out.
"Every turn of the highway or hiking path brought a spectacular new vista that was even better than the last... We spent the entire trip in jaw-dropping disbelief, and frequently wiped away tears of joy over the shear beauty of it all." (Carol, one of our clients)
Iceland's only 360 thousand small nation has a rich cultural life, rooted in its Viking history and saga literature, and in the unique often isolated experience with nature. From the ancient sagas to award-winning films, Icelanders are a generally writing, acting, composing, designing, painting, sculpting, and all-round creating bunch.
The interior Highlands of Iceland are considered one of the last great wildernesses of Europe. There are not many places were you can be on your own with nature, and experience the uniqueness and tranquility of this waste unique area. For many it is a life changing spiritual experience.

Our tours are for adventurous travelers who are not only interested in standard sightseeing. We keep it casual and design Iceland holidays that we would like to send our friends on! The partners we choose are hand selected, so you can experience Iceland as authentically as possible.
We currently offer guided vacation packages in our Guided Tours category, as well as Self-Drive Tours (“Roadtrips”) . We can also arrange for private tours for you and your friends or family!
On a Guided Tour you will be travelling in a small group of like-minded explorers and be led by expert, friendly guides. On a Roadtrip you will travel by yourself in a rental car and be able to design your own adventure in Iceland, equipped with our detailed itinerary.
Again, this is pretty much up to you and your plans. If you only have a weekend, we recommend discovering Reykjavík and maybe visiting the active volcano! If you have between 5 and 7 days, you should focus on the regions in the South and West. The minimum time to do the Ring Road, in our humble opinion, is 8 days. If you want to include Snæfellsnes or the Westfjords, add 2-3 days per region.
Yes, we do. Please find out more about this excellent option in our Terms and Conditions .
Yes, there is one ferry connection that departs from Denmark (Hirtshals) and lands in Seyðisfjörður, a beautiful town in the Eastfjords. Please note that we do not offer tours that start in Seyðisfjörður (8-hour drive from Reykjavík), and that our Roadtrips are not available with accommodation only. But we can of course help you arrange a customized Roadtrip if you come without your car, or recommend tours in the area!

Amazing and unique experience, brilliantly planned and executed
March, 2024
Deluxe Iceland planned and executed one of the best trips we've ever taken--and we've been everywhere! Each day was packed with utterly unique and wonderful experiences--waterfalls, ice caves, snowmobiling on glaciers, ATV rides through geothermal fields, flying over volcanic eruptions, incredible food and wine tours, and more. Each and every aspect of the trip was perfectly planned and seamlessly executed. I can't think of a thing I would improve upon. Iceland is unlike anyplace I've ever been, and Deluxe did an amazing job of putting together a portfolio experiences. HIGHLY... Read more
World Class planning and execution. Absolutely amazing service in a wonderful country.
February 14, 2024
Deluxe Iceland is 1st class, and they made this the most perfect vacation ever. Every detail was attended to. From the minute the arrangements we made with Anna, who worked to make sure we hit every spot to the driving with Unnar, we made sure everything executed flawlessly. I would give them 10 stars if the system allowed. We have traveled the world but never had a better trip than this one. We will definitely be back! I recommend anyone to book with this world-class... Awesome solo trip

Unexpectedly had a solo trip to Iceland (my daughter got sick and couldn't go) and Deluxe Iceland made my trip absolutely amazing. Unnar was an amazing guide, he went above and beyond to make sure my trip was nothing short of spectacular. I didn't have to worry about a thing, they took care of everything and customized my trip perfectly. I'm going back in Oct with my daughter, and I can't wait to see what they plan for us. Iceland Adventure
Deluxe Iceland took the guess work out of planning an adventurous vacation for my family with 3 children, aged 11, 11, 9. They carefully crafted an itinerary that was exciting, educational and took into consideration that we were traveling with children. The hotel suites were phenomenal with friendly staff that were willing to answer questions and make every accommodation to our requests. The activities, which included ATVs, waterfalls, snowmobiling, geothermal spa, farm visits, lava center, park hikes, geysirs, etc. were carefully mapped out to maximize our 6 day trip. Deluxe Iceland staff were available in the days leading up to our arrival and promptly answered any/all questions while we were in Iceland. I would highly recommend using them to plan your... Icelandic Dream Vacation
November 24, 2023
Our family of three just returned after an amazing 4 day trip to Iceland. The trip was wildly successful - despite an impending volcanic eruption and hurricane-force winds - due to the incredible staff at Deluxe Iceland (Arney with planning and Unnar as our driver/guide). The team at Deluxe Iceland was able to preemptively identify potential issues due to weather and adapt our itinerary accordingly - something we could never manage on our own without that same level of knowledge. We also avoided large tourist groups and were able to optimize sightseeing according to weather - ultimately seeing and learning so much more than we could have accomplished on our own. We highly recommend planning your Icelandic vacation with Deluxe... Read more

Perfect mix of events and sites.
We had an awesome time in Iceland! Our tour guide, Herdis, was very kind and helpful! The tour allowed us to visit national parks, rural farms, craters, explore lava caves, see the beaches, visit waterfalls and more! We learned a lot about Iceland, got to explore the city of Reykjavík, and met great people. Herdis taught us about the culture and history of Iceland and gave us opportunities to try local bakeries, restaurants, and smaller markets to try Icelandic foods and cuisine. We were even lucky enough to catch the Northern Lights on our last day there! Loved it, can't wait to go back!

Overall, everything was good.
The venues selected for the tour were nteresting. This is a good self guiding tour as we had plenty of driving time (hours and hours each day) where the guide didn't speak. No music either, just silence. That left us researching Iceland history and stories online. The hotel selected and owned by the tour company was comfortable. It was far from any other business so you have to eat your dinner there. Good news is dinner was very good.
Arctic Adventures
- Excellent - 1,350 reviews for Iceland tours
The tour was very nice and the guide, very nice, would stop to give detailed explanations . The only real problem was the waiting time on the way back. First we encountered a car from their company stuck in the mud and they made us wait in the rain to lend a helping hand which we later did not have to give. Also, when we arrived at the bus we waited for another group before leaving despite being soaked with water . I recommend more care as people have schedules to keep and long waits are unpleasant especially if you are wet
An amazing tour with a brilliant driver and guide. Every experience was unforgettable.

Active and was able to see many sites on the tour. Our guide Lana from insight was amazing.
We really enjoyed 10 days and met very nice people in the tour group. This was our first rip to Iceland. We would like to come back again to visit missed places. Very good experiences to learn history, culture, and see people, unique landscape, powerful waterfalls, hot springs, even horses and sheep. Iceland is simply great nature.

My friend and I just got back from a fly/drive five day trip in Iceland. We had a fabulous time. All the tours and hotels were all nicely arranged and everything ran on time, which was awesome. There was one hotel that wasn't as nice as the others, but all in all, a wonderful adventure
Tour is very good. Great guides. I would have liked Snafelness tour included in this trip. Golden Circle tour was rushed a bit. Need to give us more time.

The glacier hike was such a great experience! Heimir was an excellent guide and gave us many fun facts about the rich history and culture of Iceland! If you are short on time, this is a great way to see the iconic treasures of the south! Highly recommend!
Absolutely a fantastic trip on every way. Great trip leader. Stefan!

Excellent but it was full on.
To start off with when I arrived at the hotel they could not find my reservation. I had a voucher with the correct information but somehow there was a miscommunication between the hotel and the tour agency. Secondly I went to go to the meeting place at the time that was stated on my paperwork, and no one showed up. I called the travel agency and they sent me to a bus stop. Eventually I was picked up.
Iceland Travel

Everything in the booking process went smoothly. They were very helpful answering questions and checking-in to hotels and picking up our car was a breeze. The app that was used as our guide was just points of interest on a map, I think it would have been helpful if you could put in a final destination and select points along the away, rather than just be able to choose one point of interest and have it navigate you there. It would also be helpful if the app had descriptions of what each point of interest was in addition to the name, so you didn’t have to look it up separately. We ended up building our own itinerary and used google maps to navigate because it was easier and made more sense to us. Still, having everything booked and a general outline for the trip was very helpful and convenient and I would definitely recommend.
Really professional tour guide/driver (BG) who made the tour run smoothly and provided lots of local insight and information. All hotels and meals were well arranged.

Emilie was a great guide. The scenery and experiences were wonderful. Recommend you don't offer ice cave excursions in the dinner months.
Still waiting for any response and refund since we unfortunately had to cancel the trip which we had insurance on and with more than 24 hrs notice. It was not because we didn’t want to go, we were checked in at airport with boarding passes ready to go
Troll Expeditions
The tour was excellent. The guide, John ( Ionut ) was awesome and took us to the most interesting places. He knew the business well and is a skilled driver. My only gripe is that the first two nights we stayed in a semi-decent hotel, apparently owned by Troll Expeditions. It was great that we had a bathroom in the room, but the rooms were small and poorly ventilated. Great location, though. All in all, I recommend this tour if you're an active person and able to hike a little bit. Make sure you take the extra activities package as they were extremely awesome!
Good tour to get an overview of Iceland. Besides the sights, the standout activities were the glacier hike, Katla Ice Cave and whale watching. The appropriate attire and equipment were provided which made the activities safe and enjoyable.
- Excellent - 1,652 reviews for Iceland tours
Everything was really good! The flight with Islandair was very good. The hotel location was great, the staff were great. The breakfast and area was just okay. The front desk gal made fresh croissants and coffee for an early flight which was very much appreciated. The tours were great and easy instructions to follow. I would recommend Wingbuddy for tours and travel.

The Real Iceland
Reviewed on Tripadvisor
I was introduced to VIlli by a large, global business network which has the highest standards and has access to the greatest guides around the world. Villi has been the best guide we have used... He instantly understood us, was incredibly engaged and engaging with the kids, taught us a great deal about Iceland and astounding topography... thoughtful, consummate professional, down-to-earth... We will always use him again when blessed to return.
3 days of amazing!
Villi is one of the best guides I have ever had on a trip. He is not only knowledge of all aspects of Iceland, but he lays out all the information (he doesn't sugarcoat everything) so everyone enjoys getting the full experience. He ended up being more of a part of our group instead of being just our guide. Truly enjoyed his company and the overall experience of the places we visited in Iceland.
Tightly-coordinated, but not over-programmed
Villi somehow achieved that rare balance: he helped develop a program that dazzled our group of difficult-to-impress couples, without feeling over-programmed -- we saw both "standard agenda" sites in Iceland, but also some off-the-beaten-path opportunities. Plus Villi himself acted as guide, with useful and interesting color commentary every step of the way.

Lava Formations
Explore Iceland’s astonishing lava formations on our tours
On our tours of Iceland, you’ll see an ever-changing country packed with breathtaking geological marvels, including beautiful basalt columns, jagged pinnacles, and jet-black lava flows. Home to some of the fiercest volcanoes ever known, more than a third of the world’s recorded lava since the Middle Ages has poured across Iceland! On our Ring Road and South Coast tours , you’ll see how lava has shaped the country into what it is today, where more than 30 active volcano systems have created astonishing sights like Stuðlagil Canyon , the Eldhraun lava field, and the black sand beach at Reynisfjara .
See the “Arch with a Hole” summer home to Puffins
Offering some of the best views on the South Coast, Dyrhólaey (Door Hill Island) is a spectacular promontory rising more than a hundred meters high above the Atlantic. Close to the most southerly point in Iceland, fierce waves pound the shores below. You’ll enjoy phenomenal panoramic views of towering stone arches, gleaming glaciers, brooding volcanoes, and Iceland’s famous black sand beach, Reynisfjara . If you look closely, you’ll see the Reynisdrangar too! In the summer, thousands of puffins and other seabirds flock here, so it’s an excellent spot for bird watching!
Blue Lagoon
Take a dip at Iceland’s famous Geothermal SPA
Experience a spa day like no other with a trip to Iceland’s iconic Blue Lagoon . This geothermal paradise guarantees relaxation and rejuvenation after a day of exploring. Some of our Golden Circle & Ring Road tours include an option to visit here, where you can lie back in the warming waters, admire the astonishing views of the jet-black lava fields, exfoliate, and enjoy a drink at the swim-up bar. Close to the airport and the city, the Blue Lagoon is the perfect place to sample the best of Iceland’s famous hot pots, where the mineral-rich healing waters will send you to heaven!
Whale Watching
Enjoy an unforgettable whale watching tour in Iceland!
With more than twenty types of whales visiting Iceland every year, it’s one of the best places in the world to take a whale watching tour. When we visit Akureyri in North Iceland on our Ring Road tours , get ready to spot humpbacks, minke whales, orcas, dolphins, and porpoise s . If you’re lucky, you might see a Blue whale, the most enormous creature ever known! Whales and other cetaceans come to Iceland to feed in the nutrient-rich waters, and some stay all year round now. Imagine the joy of seeing whales and dolphins in the wild – you can do that when you visit Iceland!
Explore the land of ten thousand waterfalls on our tours!
Iceland is covered by glaciers and snow-capped mountains, so that means there’s a lot of crystal-clear meltwater tumbling over cliffs and rushing to the sea. Some say there are over 10,000 waterfalls in Iceland, and you’ll see some of the most famous falls on our Golden Circle , South Coast , and Ring Road tours . There are hidden waterfalls, multi-tiered falls, widescreen cascades where rainbows dance on sunny days, and even waterfalls where you can walk behind the waters! We’ll show you some of the best fosses in Iceland – and they’re all easy to reach too!
Volcanic Craters
See Iceland’s spectacular volcanic craters on our tours!
Iceland is less than 20 million years old, created by underwater volcanoes rising up along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge with a pipeline of molten magma straight from the Earth’s burning core. Dozens of volcanoes dot the country, and many are still active, which means you can explore fascinating volcanic formations at different geological stages! On our Golden Circle tours, you’ll see the multicolored crater at Kerið. Grábrok Craters are included in itineraries for our Westfjords Tours . There are countless more craters to be seen on our Ring Road and Silver Circle tours!
Seal Watching
Go seal spotting while you’re on tour in Iceland!
Iceland is a haven for several seal species, with little colonies of these captivating creatures dotted around the country. On our South Coast & Glacier Lagoon and Ring Road tours , you’ll have a chance to spot them at Jökulsárlón, where seals are often seen basking on the floating icebergs. Iceland’s coastline features golden sandy beaches where Harbor and Gray seals make their home, including Ytri-Tunga , a stop on our Snaefellsnes tour in West Iceland.
Notably the highest chances to see them is when taking one of Westfjords Tours . It’s your best chance to see these gorgeous creatures in their natural habitat!
River Rafting
Take a ride on a thrilling river rafting tour experience!
Iceland’s fast-flowing glacial rivers offer you a fantastic adventure experience when you join one of our adrenaline-pumping river rafting tours. Jump on sturdy rafts not far from Gullfoss waterfall on the Golden Circle , and paddle through the twisting turns of the Brúarhlöð volcanic rock canyon on the White River! Soak up the stunning scenery as you float downstream, safe in the hands of expert guides, with all the equipment you’ll need provided. It’s one of the most exciting adventure activities you can take in Iceland!
Northern Lights
Want to see the Northern Lights? Then book an Multi-Day Tour during winter time!
Seeing a display of the magical Northern Lights is an unforgettable experience, and Iceland is one of the most beautiful places in the world to witness this colorful cosmic spectacle. Clear, dark skies are needed to see the Northern Lights at their best, far away from streetlights. So when you book a winter multi-day tour , you’ll have the best chance to see the Northern Lights when you stay overnight in the remote Icelandic countryside. The darker the nights get, the brighter the lights can be seen. Choose one of our winter tours for an experience you’ll never forget!
Explore Iceland’s unique ice caves on our exciting tours!
More than a tenth of Iceland is covered by glaciers, making it the perfect place to get a close look at these astonishing frozen wonders. On our South Coast tours , you can opt for an unforgettable Ice Cave experience at Vatnajökull . Iceland’s glaciers are constantly changing, so your ice cave trip will be unique – nobody else will see the same sight again! Strap on some crampons and discover fascinating ice formations, including stalagmites, stalactites, and spectacular blue ice caves, safe in the hands of our experienced glacier guides. Tours operate between late October to April.
Lava Caving
Iceland is a hotbed of volcanic activity formed by superheated lava and molten rock from countless eruptions over millions of years. When the lava stops flowing, the top crust cools more quickly, leaving hollow caves and tunnels behind. You can explore these incredible underground spaces when our Silver Circle tours visit The Cave at Víðgelmir in West Iceland. Enjoy a 90-minute expedition on well-lit walkways with expert guides and learn about stalagmites and stalactites in colorful caverns. Viking outlaws used these places as hideouts – now you can explore here too!
Golden Circle
See Iceland’s most famous sights
Tour the Golden Circle to see the glittering jewels in Iceland’s crown. In one convenient day trip from the capital, you’ll see the magnificent Gullfoss waterfall, the geothermal wonders of Geysir , and the spectacular rift valley at Þingvellir National Park . The Golden Circle offers you the best of Iceland’s natural beauty and history, where you can walk in Viking footsteps between two continents! Stand back as a geyser erupts at Haukadalur Geothermal Area every few minutes and admire the view at Gullfoss, a tremendous two-tiered waterfall fed by glacial meltwater.
Hot Spring Bathing
Take a dip in Iceland’s famous geothermal spas on our tours
Enjoying a dip in a geothermal hot spring spa or pool is a daily ritual for Icelanders, like going to a coffee shop or a bar. There are dozens of natural hot spring spas, swimming pools, and outdoor hot pots all over the country, waiting for you to jump in and relax! Our Golden Circle tours include options to visit the Blue Lagoon or Sky Lagoon near Reykjavík, while our Silver Circle tours include an authentic stone-walled hot pot in a remote canyon! Our Ring Road tours also feature several geothermal swimming pools around the country, where the locals love to relax too.
Take our tours of Iceland to admire its gorgeous glaciers
Close to the Arctic Circle and just 300 miles wide, Iceland is the perfect place to explore glaciers and ice caps. These frozen blue wonders can be seen easily as you explore Iceland on our Ring Road tours . That’s because outlet glaciers and glacier tongues reach down from Sólheimajökull on the South Coast and from Vatnajökull in the East right down to the coast, making it easy to get up close to these majestic sights. Centuries of snow and ice have created these incredible glaciers, but they are retreating now due to climate change. Don’t miss your chance to see these marvels while you can!
Glacier Hike
Experience an adventure like no other on a Glacier Hike tour
Did you know that a tenth of Iceland is covered in glaciers and that 269 of them have been named? Iceland is the ideal place to come if you want to explore these natural wonders at close quarters. That’s because our South Coast tours visit Sólheimajökull in South Iceland, where you can strap on crampons and take an unforgettable stroll across this ever-changing environment. Gaze at incredible ice formations, crossing crevasses, and exploring ice caves, all in the hands of knowledgeable expert guides. Note : Our Glacier Hike tours operate between April and October.
Iceland is a country filled with incredible water features, including hot springs, waterfalls, and glacial rivers. But did you know that the word “geyser” comes from here? On our Golden Circle tours , you’ll see the “OG” of geysers everywhere at the Haukadalur Geothermal area. While Geysir has fallen silent recently, nearby Strokkur erupts in steam explosions and spray every few minutes, sending superheated water flying high into the sky. Geysir means “gush” in Icelandic, and that’s where the name comes from! If you book a package with stay in Hveragerði you can also admire smaller cousin of Strokkur that erupts every 15-20 minutes.
Geothermal Areas
Discover Iceland’s active geothermal areas on our tours
Iceland’s fiery volcanic origins mean it’s a hothouse of geothermal activity with several colorful geothermal areas you can explore on our tours. The Blue Lagoon is the most famous, close to the airport, and you can visit the Haukadalur Geothermal Area on our Golden Circle tours . On our Silver Circle tours , you can see the most powerful hot spring in Europe at Deildartunguhver . And if you choose one of our Ring Road tours , you’ll see the almost alien landscapes at Hverir , where fumaroles fizz and hot pools bubble and boil! Feel the ground tremble and smell the sulfur!
Iceland is a “country in the making” formed by volcanoes and earthquakes and sculpted by gigantic glaciers.
That offers you a variety of breathtaking and unique landscapes, such as Stuðlagil and Fjaðrárgljúfur , two of the most stunning places in Iceland! At Stuðlagil, you’ll see twisting basalt columns line a gorgeous glacial river canyon, a magnificent location that has only recently been discovered. Fjaðrárgljúfur (Feather River Canyon) is a surreal sight – a marvelous sheer-walled river canyon covered in blankets of velvet-green moss.
Our tours will take you straight to the most spectacular sights in Iceland, but there are ways of getting even closer if you want to! At the Glacier Lagoon (Jökulsárlón), you can jump into an amphibious vehicle for an unforgettable tour around the lagoon, sailing amongst the glittering giants.
Imagine the thrill of seeing these gigantic chunks of multi-coloured ice from just a few feet away! Where else will you get a chance to cruise between towering icebergs as they sway around the spectacular lagoon? Don’t miss this magical experience! Note: Boat tours are available from May to October.
Bird Watching
Everyone wants to see Iceland’s famous puffins when they visit in the summer months (late May until mid-August) . Iceland is also home to countless more species of birds, some of which stay all year round.
On our South Coast and Ring Road tours, you’ll also have a chance to see Arctic terns, kittiwakes, guillemots, and razorbills. Lake Mývatn in North Iceland attracts thousands of ducks each summer, making it a bird watcher’s paradise! Look out for the Barrow’s Goldeneye, Harlequin ducks, gyrfalcons, gannets, and ptarmigans! Our Westfjords and Snæfellsnes tours also include visits to bird-filled cliffs along the route.
Visit the “original” Geyser on our Golden Circle tours
Iceland’s fierce volcanic activity fuels gushing geysers all around the country, and the most famous hot spring is Geysir , one of the highlights of our Golden Circle tours . Geysir was the first erupting hot spring discovered by Europeans, and its name is the Icelandic word for “gush”, giving its name to all hot springs worldwide. Geysir is quiet these days, but Strokkur sends hot water and vapor high into the sky every few minutes! You won’t have to wait long to see it blow sky-high. So get your camera ready – this will be one of the best photo opportunities you’ll have in Iceland!
Gullfoss Waterfall
Discover the glorious Gullfoss on our Golden Circle tours
One of the highlights of the famous Golden Circle route , Gullfoss is a thundering two-tier waterfall fueled by Langjökull , the “Long Glacier”, which you’ll see far inland if it’s a clear day. Tumbling more than thirty meters into a dramatic rock canyon, Gullfoss is one of the most thrilling waterfalls in the country, and you can see the falls from several viewing platforms. Watch out for rainbows on sunny days, and wear waterproofs – millions of gallons of water crashing over the cascade creates lots of spray!
Traditional Architecture
See the famous turf-roofed buildings!
Traditional Icelandic architecture is characterized by its simplicity, functionality, and integration with the natural environment. During our tours you will be able to see couple of its examples.
Enjoy an evening and overnight stay in the capital of the North
Akureyri is the unofficial “second city” of Iceland, located in the far north about six hours from Reykjavik, nestling at the end of the longest fjord in the country.
Sólheimajökull Glacier & Lagoon
See the slowly disappearing glacier and a glacial lake forming in front!
Sólheimajökull is a magnificent glacier located on the South Coast of Iceland. It is an outlet glacier that descends from the larger Mýrdalsjökull ice cap. Sólheimajökull is famous for its breathtaking ice formations, including deep crevasses, ice caves, and dramatic ice ridges.
The glacial environment of Sólheimajökull provides a unique opportunity to witness the effects of climate change, as the glacier has been receding in recent years. This caused new Glacial Lagoon to appear on the map of Iceland, where huge chunks of ice slowly float on its surface.
Húsafell Canyon Baths
Bathe like Icelanders did in the old days!
This place offers a unique and natural relaxation experience, nestled within a stunning canyon surrounded by lush greenery. This is a spellbinding place that has to be seen to be believed, with three geothermally-heated pools of varying temperatures (30-41°C or 86-105°F), a cold-water pot and a cooling waterfall, all designed to blend seamlessly into the natural environment.
These are traditional and authentic Icelandic bathing pools , inspired by the age-old ways used by the locals in this area for a thousand years. Sustainably built in the traditional stone-bath style in an off-grid location, it’s a unique combination.
Rauðisandur Red Beach
Find yourself on the Westernmost Beach in Europe!
Rauðisandur is a stunning golden sandy beach located in the Westfjords region of Iceland. Its name translates to “Red Sand,” but the beach is actually a unique blend of golden, beige, and reddish hues . The vast expanse of Rauðisandur stretches for nearly 10 kilometers and is backed by stunning cliffs and mountains. The beach is known for its tranquil beauty and peaceful atmosphere, making it a perfect spot for solitude and relaxation.
Bolafjall Sky Walk
Take a walk on top of one of the most beautiful summits in Iceland!
Bolafjall is a prominent mountain located in the Westfjords region of Iceland. Rising up to an elevation of 638 meters , it offers stunning panoramic views of the surrounding fjords and coastal landscape.
In the recent year, on the summit of Bolafjall impressing viewing platform with sky walk was constructed, just right next to old American radar station. It allows you to witness the beauty of the rugged terrain and the vast ocean beyond. The road leading to the top is very steep and narrow, but no worries! You will be taken there by our experienced drivers.
See the most powerful waterfall in the whole of Europe!
Dettifoss is a mighty and powerful waterfall located in Northeast Iceland. It is known for being the most powerful waterfall in Europe , with a massive volume of water cascading over its rocky edge.
The sheer force and thundering sound of Dettifoss are awe-inspiring, creating a mesmerizing spectacle for visitors. The waterfall is situated in the Vatnajökull National Park, surrounded by rugged landscapes and dramatic cliffs.
Discover the hidden gem of the South Coast with us!
Gljúfrabúi is a hidden gem located in Iceland, near the popular tourist attraction, Seljalandsfoss waterfall.
It is often referred to as the “Secret Waterfall” or “Cave Watefall” due to its concealed location and the fact, that is very often missed by many !
Diamond Beach
Take a walk among the “Diamonds”!
The beach gets its name from the sparkling icebergs that wash up on the black sand , resembling diamonds on the shore. The contrast between the glistening ice and the dark volcanic sand creates a breathtaking sight. Diamond Beach is a photographer’s paradise, offering stunning opportunities to capture the beauty of nature.
Walk on a lava arch and see many stunning sights!
Arnastapi is a small village located on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula in Iceland. The village offers a peaceful and tranquil atmosphere, making it a popular destination for nature lovers and hikers. One of the main attractions in Arnarstapi is the famous Gatklettur, a natural arch rock formation that stands tall against the crashing waves of the Atlantic Ocean. There, you can also take a walk on the Lava Bridge and pose for a unique picture.
Enjoy an evening and overnight stay in the capital of the West
Borgarnes bubbles with life, packed into a picturesque promontory overlooking the broad waters of Borgarfjörður, the “City Fjord”.
Enjoy an afternoon and overnight stay in the charming, geothermal village
Hveragerði catches your attention with steam vents billowing vapor into the air everywhere you look. You’ll be amazed by the endless rows of geothermally-heated greenhouses, where bananas and other fruits are grown all year round!
Hraunfossar Lava Waterfalls
See a unique waterfall when you book a Silver Circle tour
Iceland is filled with unique sights, and one of the most mesmerizing is the “Lava Waterfalls” at Hraunfossar . Part of the Silver Circle tour route, glacial meltwater gently cascades down a series of steps from the middle of moss-covered lava cliffs, with the falls stretching for hundreds of meters. The waters seep through the Hallmundarhraun lava field until reaching the White River before tumbling gracefully below. You can enjoy the Lava Waterfall from different perspectives at several viewing platforms. It’s an extraordinary sight!
Explore Iceland’s wildest region
If you want to see Iceland at its wildest, the Westfjords await you! Lonely Planet picked the Westfjords as its No.1 place to go – here’s your chance to see it!
Vik í Myrdal
Charming, southernmost village in Iceland
The picturesque village of Vik í Myrdal is perfect for a photo stop on our South Coast and Ring Road tours. Atlantic waves roll in with full force at the most southerly point on Iceland’s mainland, pounding the black sand beaches. Vík is the warmest coastal town in the country, and the summer air is filled with migrating birds. Walk its pretty streets and admire the gorgeous hilltop church atop the town’s highest point! Enjoy another view of the Reynisdrangar from there!
Þingvellir National Park
Where two continents split apart
A place of outstanding natural beauty, Þingvellir National Park offers you a unique opportunity to walk in Viking footsteps between two continents. The tectonic plates of North America and Europe are pulling apart along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge here, increasing Iceland’s size every day! The early Viking settlers held their parliaments (the Alþingi) here for a thousand years, and Iceland declared its independence from this stunning location in 1944, so this is a sacred place for all Icelanders! It’s now a UNESCO World Heritage Site , making it a must-see stop on our Golden Circle tours .
South Coast
See the best of Iceland’s stunning South Coast
Explore the treasures of the South Coast on our tours, discovering stunning landscapes lined with thundering waterfalls, immense glaciers, towering volcanoes, and dramatic black sand beaches! Easily reached from the city, the South Coast is an unforgettable dreamland of astonishing natural wonders. Hike across a glacier at Sólheimajökull , or maybe discover a hidden waterfall? Walk on an endless black sand beach at Reynisfjara or enjoy a thrilling walk behind a waterfall at Seljalandsfoss ? These are just some of the magical experiences you can enjoy on a tour of the sensational South Coast!
Snæfellsnes
See the “Iceland in Miniature”
Close to the capital and easily reached, the Snæfellsnes Peninsula is an ideal tour to discover all of Iceland’s best features in just one day! The “Snow Mountain Peninsula” is often called “ Iceland in Miniature ” because you can find photogenic mountains (including Kirkjufell ), beautiful beaches, plunging waterfalls, seal colonies, ancient lava fields, and a towering stratovolcano in one place! Some say the peninsula has mystical qualities as one of the planet’s many “chakra” centers. It also inspired Jules Verne when he wrote “ Journey to the Center of the Earth ”!
Soothe yourself after a day on tour with a dip at Sky Lagoon
One of Iceland’s newest and most impressive geothermal spa experiences, Sky Lagoon offers you a memorable experience with astonishing views of the Atlantic. Relax in the perfectly regulated waters surrounded by volcanic rocks and a turf-roofed visitor center. Enjoy the 75-meter infinity pool, and order a drink at the swim-up bar! You can opt for an authentic Icelandic bathing experience with the Seven-Step Ritual , including saunas, cold mist showers, and exfoliating scrubs. It’s one of the most spectacular geothermal spa experiences in the world!
Seljalandsfoss
Take a walk behind a waterfall on our South Coast tours
Seljalandsfoss is a graceful waterfall that tumbles over 60 meters from Eyjafjallajökull , a volcano on Iceland’s stunning South Coast . It has a special feature that makes it even more exciting – there’s a path you can take all the way around the cascade! It can be slippery, but the views are unforgettable if you don’t mind getting wet! The chute is fueled by glacial meltwater from the volcano that stopped air traffic in 2010, putting Iceland on the map! A “secret” waterfall called Gljúfrabúi is nearby, hidden in a little green rock canyon – we’ll show you where to find it!
Reynisfjara Black Beach
See one of the most famous beaches in the world
If National Geographic and TripAdvisor both say Reynisfjara is one of the best beaches in the world, then you have to add it to your list of “must-see” places to visit when you’re in Iceland. With miles of jet-black volcanic sands stretching into the distance and fierce Atlantic waves pounding the shoreline, it’s one of the most dramatic coastlines you’ll ever see! Lined with beautiful basalt columns, the Reynisdrangar completes the cinematic scene, towering sea stacks looming offshore! Some say these were trolls trying to catch a ship, frozen in time when the sun rose!
Jökulsárlon Glacier Lagoon
Explore Iceland’s spectacular Glacier Lagoon on our tours
Where else can you get up close to immense icebergs in a glacial meltwater lagoon? On our South Coast Multi-Day and Ring Road tours , you can visit the astonishing Glacier Lagoon at Jökulsárlón , where you’ll see gigantic icebergs floating serenely around a spectacular lake, which only formed about 80 years ago. As the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier retreats, giant pieces break off the edge and sail out to sea. The Glacier Lagoon is the “waiting room” on the journey! Come and see these multicolored icy marvels for yourself at this bucket-list location, and look out for seals basking on the bergs too!
Seljalandsfoss Waterfall
Walk into the cave hidden behind the falls!
Hveragerði has several fine restaurants and cafés, and some offer unique dishes that use the underground heat! For example, Ölverk Pizza & Brewery specialize in wood-fired pizzas while using geothermal heat to brew their high-quality craft ales. You can also have a snack inside the greenhouse at Rósa Kaffi . Nearby, The Greenhouse Hotel is also home to a food hall with several options, including tacos, burgers, fried chicken and Asian cuisine. More options are available here, so you’re guaranteed a great meal, whatever you’re in the mood for.

Hi Priscilla!
We got back to the States last Saturday night and meant to send you an email over the weekend. First of all, THANK YOU so much for the best organized trip to Iceland ever! I love your country and its natural beauty! We truly appreciated the TRAVEL BOOK and the REGION BOOK that was prepared for us because it served as our main guide for the whole trip. There was so much to see in every part of the region that we had to pick and choose. We were able to go to Secret Lagoon and Myvatn Natural Baths and enjoyed it so much. We walked the trails leading to the Blue Lagoon on our first day and saw so many tourists, that we appreciated the less touristic lagoons that we experienced.
Because our time was only 8 days around the Ring Road, we were mostly limited in visiting Myvatn and Akuyeryi where would could have stayed at least 2 days exploring in each city. We did not let the rain bother us on our Glacier Hike and the Whale Watching which was magical.
The accommodations were very good especially the Fosshotels that we stayed at. The breakfast prepared for us were substantial. I was surprised that some served “grilled horse” which I had to taste just for the heck of it. We loved the Icelandic horses that we said hello to on the way to Blondous. I was also very pleased that tourists were respectful of not littering the sites too much.
On our next trip to Iceland, we would like to explore the Western Fjords which we were told are also beautiful. The Snafellsness Peninsula and hope to see more birds and wildlife on our next trip.
I have already told my co-workers and friends that if they ever consider traveling to Iceland to come see me to get the best travel organizer for Iceland!
Again, thank you for everything!

Sea kayaking, one of the most exhilarating ways to experience antarctica, the arctic and beyond..
Sea kayaking holidays in the humbling wilderness of Antarctica , the Arctic , and some of the world’s most biodiverse regions, are guaranteed to stir your soul. Paddle between brash ice and icebergs of all shapes and sizes, absorbing the majestic scenery as it unfolds before you.
In Antarctica, keep your camera on-hand for unforgettable encounters with penguins, seals and whales, and occasionally leopard seals or orcas. In the Arctic, prepare to paddle under nesting bird colonies, past massive glaciers and around large iceberg.
Led by experienced guides , you and your small group of like-minded adventurers will paddle between ice floes, brash ice and icebergs of all shapes and sizes. Paddling is one of the best ways to access and intimately explore the beautiful coastlines we visit and therefore make the most of your time in the wild and remote destinations we visit .
‘Getting out amongst it’ is our philosophy, and that is exactly what we do. Weather permitting, the sea kayaking activity is normally available anytime the other expeditioners go out. Rather than travelling large distances, our aim is to ensure you see as much as possible. We paddle between 5 to 15 kilometres (2 to 4 hours) per outing, often taking a snack and a flask of hot chocolate to enjoy on our excursion.
Each small group of kayakers (up to 10 per guide) will have their own intimate exploration of the small hidden bays and coasts that are inaccessible to Zodiacs. Of course, we also make time for your own shore excursions and wildlife encounters.
The elements play an important role in our sea kayaking program. It is important that you have an adventurous attitude and understand that the weather can impact our kayaking time.
For all of our trips, you must be active in the outdoors and have an adventurous spirit. The level of experience differs slightly depending on the region you are visiting.
For most temperate and polar you should be an intermediate paddler. In South Georgia however, conditions can be more varied and you require solid paddling experience in ocean swell and wind.
For our tropical trips some prior paddling experience is needed. We may encounter wind on these trips, however the water is fairly protected.
You do not need to be an expert or know how to roll. However, you must be able to swim and you should have experience in a wet exit and assisted re-entry. You should also be proficient at putting on a spray skirt by yourself and be comfortable paddling on seas with up to half a metre swell. It is also important that you gain some practice getting into a kayak from a pier, wharf, or deep shoreline where you can’t step into the kayak from standing position. You can easily practice all of this at home, plus paddling in a variety of weather conditions, before your trip.
What about beginners up to the challenge?
Our guides do not offer instructional classes for beginners. Therefore, the sea kayaking option is unsuitable for complete novices. However, there is often ample time to gain the required experience before you depart. We may be able to recommend a reputable sea kayak operator in your area for some tuition prior to the trip.
Your guide will assess your ability on the initial paddle, and if you have insufficient experience, he or she reserves the right to restrict your participation in rougher conditions.
You should be fit enough to paddle for up to three hours and climb between moving Zodiacs on the water. Regular exercise is recommended, because the fitter you are the more you will enjoy the experience. The more paddles you can do before the trip, the better. We recommend at least three outings prior to your voyage.
Polar regions
During summer the air temperature in the Antarctic Peninsula, Greenland and Spitsbergen are generally above freezing but can range from -4°C to +5°C / 24.8°F to 41°F. The water temperature in the polar regions is close to freezing and winds sweep off the glaciers, making paddling a chilling experience. In South Georgia, there are stronger winds and swells than in Antarctica. Scotland, Iceland, Norwegian coasts are warmer with water temperatures of around 12 °C/ 53.6°F.
Temperate regions
The northern waters are warmer than the polar regions but water temperatures of around 12 °C/ 53.6°F mean you may opt to wear your paddle jacket on a warm, sunny day or our dry suits on a cool day. Surf landings are not likely, but you must be capable of paddling in a small swell or wind chop, with winds up to 20 knots. With that being said, we will not paddle if wind conditions are too strong and there is no sheltered area for paddling.
Tropical regions
In Costa Rica and Panama, April is the end of the dry season. The shoulder season begins in May, bringing increased humidity. Afternoon rain showers are possible in May with temperatures ranging from 26-36 °C (80- 96 °F). Winds are generally light at this time of year. The water temperature ranges from 27 -29 °C. Surf landings are not likely, but be prepared to paddle in a small swell or wind chop, with winds up to 15 knots. Again, we will not paddle if wind conditions are too strong and there is no sheltered area for paddling.
The Sea Kayaking activity is available for an additional surcharge and includes guided excursions and kayaking equipment. Fares for this activity start from US$900, AU$1,250, £460 or €550.
Prices are indicative only and are variable. They are calculated based on the days of voyage, ability to carry out the activity and exchange rates.

Laugavegur Trek with glacier hike - 7 Day (Huts)
6-Day Iceland Grand Adventure: Ring Road, Golden Circle, Mývatn, Hot Springs, Waterfalls & Glacier Lagoon
5-Day Snæfellsnes & South Iceland Expedition
5-Day South Coast & Northern Lights Adventure
Our guide to paddler ratio is 1:10 and we provide an accompanying safety Zodiac. There are 26 places available in Antarctica and tropical voyages, 20 in temperate regions, South Georgia and all Arctic trips except in Franz Josef Land where the maximum is 16 kayakers.
Kayakers must be 14 or over.
Sea kayaking is offered in place of regular shore excursions. We aim to paddle as often as possible. Depending on the voyage, we generally aim to paddle twice per day.
We will give you a drybag for extra clothing, binoculars and anything that needs to be kept dry. You should also carry a water bottle. We recommend bringing a waterproof camera or phone, or ensuring you have a good quality waterproof case.
If the weather changes during our outing we will head back to the ship and perhaps join a shore excursion. The ship’s captain, expedition leader and kayak guide always maintain close contact to ensure a safe paddling experience. We do not attempt to paddle too far away from the ship. The emphasis is on experiencing the destination rather than travelling long distances.
The kayaks are made with a hard plastic and are easily paddled in swell and conducting shore landings, and through small patches of brash ice. We manoeuvre around the larger ice chunks and floes.
Kayaking in the poles offers a unique wildlife viewing experience. In Antarctica, we have many opportunities to encounter penguins, seals and whales, and occasionally we may even spot leopard seals or orcas. In the Arctic, we’ll paddle under nesting bird colonies, past massive glaciers and around large icebergs, however we maintain a safe distance from polar bears and walruses. Our guides carry rifles and flare guns in the Arctic to ensure your safety against polar bears.
Kayakers in wild temperate regions will have a unique wildlife experience, with possible encounters with seals and basking sharks. You will have the opportunity to view some of the largest sea bird colonies in the northern hemisphere.
The superb wildlife-viewing opportunities are endless in the astonishingly biodiverse nature reserves we visit. Kayaks offer a unique opportunity to view marine and land mammals, coral reefs, tropical fish, sea birds and an astonishing range of rainforest birds. We will bring our snorkelling gear with us during our paddles and take advantage of any opportunities to view marine life up close.
In the unlikely event of a capsize, your experienced guide will assist by righting the kayak, stabilising it then pumping it out. Paddlers will re-enter with the guide’s help, or with a support Zodiac. With drysuits and warm clothing underneath you will be comfortable in cold water for up to half an hour. Note that the kayaks have separate compartments with bulkheads, which means they will float after a capsize.
No. Each kayaking place is for one person only. Passengers are unable to share a kayaking place as we customise the kayaks and dry suits for each individual kayaker at the beginning of each voyage.

I just got a call from my client, he said it was
He said all activities have been absolutely amazing – especially the helicopter tour, the pilot has been absolutely outstanding!
Thank you soo much again for everything and for making this client very happy!
Travel Advisor, Germany
Back to our week in Iceland, everything was perfect. Our client was happy with her rooms, the programs, guide, everything run smoothly and I was really impressed that all of her allergies were noticed even in the restaurant bookings. As I told Audur the other day, it’s been one of the best DMC experiences I have had in a very long time.
Travel Advisor, Brazil
I would like to share some feedback with you about the trip of the clients. The excursions were great. They enjoyed every moment of it and had a great time. They wished they could have stayed longer in Iceland. It was great working with you!
Travel Advisor, June 2023, Netherlands
Thank you for the follow up. I wanted to share that my clients had an amazing experience with you guys – and, as an advisor, I was extremely happy with your partnered services and can’t wait to use you for my future Iceland requests.
My clients described their experience as “a 10 out of 10 vacation” – they specifically said the guide in Iceland was incredible and tried very hard to make it memorable. Their favorite accommodations were by far Torfhaus House and Blue Lagoon – but they did see the most vivid Lights at Skalakot.

1. Which destinations can I explore with Nordic Visitor?
Nordic Visitor can plan your trip to the following countries in Europe:
- • Iceland
- • Scotland
- • Ireland
- • The UK
- • Norway
- • Switzerland
- • Sweden
- • Finland
- • Denmark
- • Greenland
We also offer Northern Europe packages in the following destinations:
- • Scandinavia – a group of countries, comprising Norway, Sweden and Denmark
- • The Alps – visit Austria, Germany and Switzerland on an Alpine getaway
- • Lapland – a region spanning the northern reaches of Sweden and Finland
- • Svalbard – a remote Norwegian archipelago located in the Arctic Circle
2. What is the difference between Scandinavia and the Nordics?
The term "Scandinavia" commonly refers to Norway, Sweden and Denmark. " Nordic countries " is used definitively for Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Iceland. This also includes their associated territories of: Svalbard, Greenland, the Faroe Islands, and the Åland Islands.
You may have guessed from our name that we originated as a Nordic travel agency. We now also specialise in Scotland and Ireland, two Celtic countries that are close to the Nordics.
3. Which Nordic country should I visit?
All of the Nordic countries are worth visiting at least once in your lifetime! Essentially, where to go in the Nordics depends on the sort of sights and experiences you’re looking for on your next getaway.
If it’s volcanoes and glaciers you seek, opt for a trip to Iceland. This island country will mesmerise you with its geysers, ice caves, black sand beaches, waterfalls, and so much more.
In Norway, the country with the longest coastline in Europe, you can expect a land of majestic mountains and fjords. Meanwhile, Denmark flaunts one of the world’s coolest capitals, Copenhagen, awash with cobblestone streets and first-class restaurants.
As for Sweden, you could soak up trendy cities, picturesque countryside and sandy beaches in the south of the country. Or head north during the winter months to experience the snow-laden scenery of Lapland, a region that Sweden shares with Finland.
For a Nordic aurora borealis tour , the top places to go are Iceland, Northern Norway, Lapland, and Svalbard. They are all located within or very close to the Arctic Circle, near the North Pole, where northern lights activity occurs. Here you have the best chances of witnessing this natural phenomenon in the Nordics.
Read this guide to the Nordic countries to help you choose where to visit.
4. How do you travel between Nordic countries?
As the Nordics are neighbouring countries, situated in Northern Europe, you can travel easily between them.
The Scandinavian nations, in particular, are very well connected with rail, road, sea and air links. You could drive, fly or take the train between Sweden, Denmark and Norway, and travel by ferry between the latter two countries. There’s also a Baltic cruise connection between Helsinki, Finland and Stockholm, Sweden.
Iceland, on the other hand, is located further away from the other Nordic nations. So if you want to explore Scandinavia and Iceland on a Nordic combination trip , the most convenient way to travel between them is by flying. The flight time from Bergen, Norway to Reykjavík, Iceland is 2 hours 15 minutes.
5. What is the best month to visit the Nordics?
The best month to explore the Nordics varies based on what you want to see and do. As these countries are located in the Northern Hemisphere, summer is from April to September, and winter is between October and March. Each season has its own appeal and reasons to visit.
For mild temperatures, long daylight hours, and green scenery, opt for a summer tour in the Nordics . This time of year is best for enjoying the outdoors and activities like hiking. Plus, if you travel to the northernmost parts of the Nordics, you’ll witness the midnight sun phenomenon.
The months of June, July and August are the most popular, as it’s when you get the best weather and summer holidays. April, May and September make up the “shoulder season”, and it’s an ideal time to travel in the Nordics if you’d prefer to be around fewer visitors.
A winter Nordic tour , on the other hand, offers different kinds of experiences. Think landscapes draped in frost, activities in the snow, and festive vibes. What’s more, as the night skies are darker for longer in winter, you have better chances of seeing the northern lights.
6. Who are Nordic Visitor’s travel experts?
Nordic Visitor is proud to be a local tour operator in Northern Europe, with offices in the capital cities of Iceland, Scotland and Sweden. Our travel experts are based in these countries and have extensively explored the regions they specialise in.
You’ll be assigned a dedicated travel consultant who will use their in-depth knowledge to arrange your tour for you. They’ll share personal recommendations and can customise your itinerary to match your particular interests.
Find out more about Nordic Visitor and our passionate travel experts.
7. What is included in a Nordic Visitor tour?

8. Does Nordic Visitor have a flexible booking policy?

Or if you need to change your travel dates, we'll rearrange all your tour details in one place, so you have a hassle-free experience.
Read our Book With Confidence terms to find out how you can have peace of mind with risk-free, flexible booking.
If you do not have Cancellation Protection with us, normal booking terms apply and we recommend you check with your private travel insurance provider.
Nordic Visitor takes care of everything on your behalf, based on your needs and requests, so you can relax and look forward to your trip.
Our travel experts will design your route, planned in a way that’s both comfortable and convenient. For example, they’ll ensure you don’t cover the same stretch of road twice unnecessarily. They’ll also book you into high-quality accommodation, and share all their insider tips with you.
This means you can leave all the hassle of trip-planning to the experts, who are based in Iceland, Scotland and Sweden. They know our destinations inside out, so you can rely on them to incorporate the best sights and hidden gems that you wouldn’t otherwise know about.
What’s more, you get access to our 24/7 helpline during your trip. Should you need any support, we are only a call away. And if you need to make changes to your itinerary for any reason, you can leave all of that to us as well.
10. What sort of accommodation will I stay in?
We understand the importance of having a clean, comfortable and friendly place to lay your head after an exciting day of exploring. To ensure you get the best experience, we use our in-depth local knowledge to handpick the most suitable accommodation for you.
The hotels and guesthouses we feature in our tours are all highly rated by visitors. Our local experts have carefully selected each accommodation partner for their exceptional standards of quality, location and character.
As we have regional offices across the destinations we specialise in, we have close connections with our suppliers and we visit them regularly. This is why we are confident that the accommodation on your trip with us will meet or even exceed your expectations.
11. Will Nordic Visitor customise my tour?
Yes, you can easily customise your tour online. Add extra nights, upgrades and day trips to your liking as you go through the booking steps. If you’d like to make your itinerary more bespoke, don’t hesitate to speak to your dedicated travel consultant.
They will gladly tailor your tour to suit your tastes and preferences. You may have particular interests in mind, such as northern lights, hiking, photography or history. Perhaps there are certain places that hold special significance to you.
If you’re travelling to Europe with kids , your personal consultant will make sure every part of your itinerary is suitable for the whole family. Or if you’re on a honeymoon or anniversary trip in Europe , they’ll happily add romantic touches to make your couples break extra special.
Most of our travel styles are flexible. But bear in mind that small group packages are a little different, as you are on a fixed itinerary for the duration of the guided tour. However, you can add extra nights to the beginning or end of your trip.
13. Will Nordic Visitor book my flights?
Return flights to your destination are not included in our packages. This gives you greater flexibility and allows you to save money by using your airline miles or taking advantage of airfare sales.
14. When should I book my flight tickets?
We’d advise that you look over flights for timings and dates, but hold off purchasing until you’ve booked your preferred tour.
15. What should I pack for my trip?
During your time in Northern Europe, you’ll be discovering new cities, towns and countryside. And with time spent outdoors, it’s best to be prepared for all kinds of weather.
Here’s our recommended packing list for visiting Northern Europe:

Trip overview
Our best 4-star accommodation and the highest level of service
All must-see locations plus authentic experiences exclusive to Premium
Trips led by our most experienced and highest-rated local leaders
- Experience the breadth of Iceland's incredible natural phenomena, including ancient volcanic rock formations, black pebble beaches, glacial lakes and geothermal lagoons.
- Take part in two incredible Exclusive Experiences – a home cooked dinner on a local farm and a relaxing dip in the wonderfully scenic Krauma thermal pools.
- Stay in the stylish Fosshotel for your Feature Stay, offering up priceless views of the surrounding landscape, modern comforts and an excellent restaurant that uses the freshest Icelandic produce.
- Travel with an experienced local leader who will explain geographic features, share stories of Iceland’s history and folklore and narrate your nightly sky watching with the science behind aurora borealis.
- Get the best chance at seeing the spectacular dancing lights of the aurora borealis in the northern sky.
- By travelling on this trip, you’ll directly support our Intrepid Foundation partner, Eden Reforestation Projects. Donations help them provide local employment opportunities and tackle climate change one tree at a time as they restore forests across 10 different countries.
- The northern lights are most visible during the colder months, when temperatures can reach -15C or below and snow is very likely. It's important to bring appropriate clothing such as a down jacket, thermals layers, gloves and suitable footwear.
- Many locations on this itinerary are remote, which means a few long drives. This is a great opportunity to enjoy the scenery and spend some time getting to know your fellow travellers.
- While there is a strong chance of seeing the northern lights in all their colourful glory (thanks to the high latitude, time of year and itinerary), nature makes no guarantees. On the rare occasion that your leader must alter the itinerary due to adverse weather, alternative activities will be offered.

Velkommin! Welcome to Reykjavik – the world’s most northerly capital and the starting point of your adventure. You'll be met at the airport and transferred to your hotel. You’ll then have a welcome meeting at 6 pm tonight to meet your group and local leader. If you arrive early, maybe take a trip to the National Museum to see the permanent exhibition of Iceland’s history. After the welcome meeting, celebrate the start of a new adventure at dinner with your group, where your leader will introduce you to Icelandic cuisine.
- Hotel Reykjavik Centrum or similar (1 night)
- Reykjavik - Welcome Dinner
- Complimentary Arrival Transfer
It’s very important that you attend the welcome meeting as we will be collecting insurance and emergency contact details at this time. If you are going to be late, please let your travel agent or hotel reception know. Ask reception or look for a note in the lobby for more information on where the meeting will take place.
If you’re interested in visiting the Blue Lagoon at the end of the trip and haven’t already booked yourself a slot, it’s best to mention this to your local leader at the welcome meeting so they can attempt to arrange tickets.
This morning, head to the geologically and historically important Thingvellir National Park. The national park may seem to be just a natural wonder, but your leader will be on hand to provide historical context and explain that this was the original site of Iceland’s old parliament from AD 930. Visit the spouting hot springs of Geysir and Strokkur before driving to the spectacular Gullfoss – Iceland’s largest waterfall. After your visit, head to your base for the evening in Fludir. This afternoon, maybe visit the Secret Lagoon – a natural geothermal pool warmed by the nearby hot springs. This evening will be a good opportunity to turn your head to the skies in search of the Northern Lights.

- Aurora Spotting (weather dependent)
- Fludir - Secret Lagoon - ISK3600

While there is a good chance of seeing the lights of the aurora this far north, there is no guarantee, as they are a natural phenomenon and weather conditions can affect visibility. There are a number of apps you can download that show current and forecast activity of the aurora around the world. Some of these apps have a function that allow you to be alerted at night when the aurora becomes visible in your current location. Remember to pack warm clothes, as temperatures can drop to below –5°C.
Start the day by travelling through the lava fields of the Laki volcanic eruption in 1783, as your leader explains how this devasting event shaped not only Iceland’s landscape, but also its culture. Next is Skaftafell National Park, where you’ll come face-to-face with Vatnajokull – Europe's biggest glacier. Carry on to some of the country’s most impressive, uninterrupted scenery and wander past the enormous basalt sea stacks at Reynisdrangar. Later, head to the Fosshotel Glacier Lagoon – your Feature Stay for the night. This modern and contemporary hotel carefully considers its surroundings as spacious rooms with huge windows show off views of the mountains and sea, while the interiors reflect the colours of the world outside. This evening, you’ll have dinner at the on-site restaurant that serves up a creative list of dishes made with local Icelandic produce.
- Fosshotel Glacier Lagoon (feature stay) or similar (1 night)
- Skaftafell - National Park
- South Coast - Laki Lava Fields
Your travel time today will be approximately 4.5 hours.
Start the day with a short drive on to Jokulsarlon, also known as the Glacier Lagoon. Take a walk around the glacial lake and learn a little more about its history. Continue through the beautiful scenery of Iceland’s South Shore and admire the spectacular Skogafoss – a waterfall on the Skoga River. At 60 m high and 25 m wide, it's one of the largest and most impressive waterfalls in Iceland. Your leader will be on hand to explain how these geographical wonders came to be. Continue to Seljalandsfoss waterfall, where you can walk right behind the stream of rushing water to see it from another angle. Next, return to Reykjavik for a free evening. Perhaps head to the Old Harbour to try the famous lobster soup, or if you’re feeling brave, the infamous fermented shark washed down with a shot of Brennivin (Icelandic Schnapps).
- South Coast - Reynisdrangar & Solheimajokull Glacier
- South Coast - Seljalandsfoss & Skogafoss Waterfalls

Visit the Hallgrimskirkja church and the dome-shaped Pearl, then head to the remote and geographically fascinating Snaefellsnes Peninsula – your home for the next two nights. On your way visit the Borgarfjordur area, you’ll pass waterfalls Hraunfossar and Barnafossar, then continue to Deildartunguhver – Europe’s most powerful hot spring. Take a relaxing dip in the Krauma thermal pools, where waters from the hot spring mix with glacial waters to create the perfect temperature. Tonight, have dinner at your accommodation before looking to the skies in search of dancing lights.
- Hotel Snaefellsnes or similar (1 night)
- Krauma - Geothermal Baths Visit

Today, you’ll explore the Snaefellsnes Peninsula, beginning with the Snaefellsjokull glacier – an icecap that covers a dormant volcano. Travel to the small fishing village of Arnarstapi, where a short stroll along the coastal cliffs will reveal rich birdlife. Stop by Djupalonssandur – a basaltic pebble beach framed by strange lava formations – then visit the village of Grundarfjordur, famous for its views of Mt Kirkjufell. Travel to the horse farm of Lysuholl, where a local will welcome you for a home-made dinner. Head back to your accommodation, and depending on the weather, rug up in warm clothing and head out in search of the northern lights.
- Snaefellsnes Peninsula - Snaefellsjokull, Arnarstapi & Stykkisholmur
- Snaefellsnes Peninsula - Liston's Stone Carving Workshop
- Snaefellsnes Peninsula – Homemade Farmhouse Dinner
Today, you’ll return to Reykjavik. On the drive, your leader may share some stories of Norse mythology, so keep an eye out for elves and fairies along the way! Iceland's capital has an eclectic art and music scene, and this afternoon you may like to browse some of the city's excellent galleries and museums. If you feel like something more active, you can take a ride on an Icelandic horse, or see killer whales just offshore on a whale watching expedition. If you are after another look at the Northern Lights, you can head out of town to chase them again this evening. Ask your leader for more information on these activities.

Fora’s Take
Iceland is a destination that promises an awe-inspiring adventure, with its breathtaking landscapes ranging from glaciers and waterfalls to volcanoes and geothermal pools. While visiting in the spring offers its own unique charm, we recommend summer for most travelers. The weather is more favorable, and the landscapes are lush and vibrant, though you may miss out on the northern lights.
It’s important to note that Iceland can be pricey, with higher costs for meals and gas. However, the experiences are well worth it. Imagine the thrill of a snowmobile ride on Langjökull glacier or the striking beauty of Vestrahorn. While the ice cave tour might not have lived up to expectations, these highlights more than made up for it.
For those looking to fully immerse themselves in Iceland's wonders, we suggest dedicating 10-12 days to explore the entire ring road. This will give you a more comprehensive Icelandic adventure, far beyond the limited experience of just Hofn and back.
