This terrifying game will show you what drowning feels like

If Candy Crush isn't nearly morbid enough to get your adrenaline going, then we've got a game for you. Sortie En Mer , which translates to "a trip out to sea" in English, is a drowning simulator in which players "swim" for their lives by scrolling up repeatedly to stay afloat on a choppy virtual ocean. The simulator was made by French sea-safety equipment company Guy Cotten as part of a campaign encouraging boaters to wear their life jackets.
The simulation , which uses a first-person view, starts off with the subject falling off his sailboat. Very quickly, the boat drifts away, and the man must swim for his life. While repeatedly scrolling up may seem easy at first, I can assure you that doing it for a few minutes without stopping quickly gets tiring. The game then eventually adds more true-to-life obstacles — the man kicks off his shoes to swim better, and he ends up losing his fingernails due to prolonged exposure to the water's freezing temperatures. No matter what, the man eventually drowns. "At sea you tire faster than you think," warns the post-simulation message. "Whenever you go out to sea, wear your life jacket."
It's chilling stuff, but it's a pretty effective reminder. Play the game here .

Sortie En Mer: This Drowning Simulator Will Make You Put On A Life Jacket Next Time You're Out On The Water
Ready to play a game that's terrifying, impossible to win and no fun at all? Great! Check out " Sortie En Mer ." If you have a fear of the open ocean, do not play this game. Seriously. It's a drowning simulator.
The simulator puts you in the shoes of Julien, a French leisure sailor out for a sail with his extremely incompetent friend Charles. After you give Charles the rudder (mistake number one), a swinging boom knocks you off the boat and Charles, of course, can’t turn it around.
Charles' second mistake was to not wear a life jacket. In order to tread water, you have to continuously scroll up, but (SPOILER ALERT!) you drown at the end anyway.
If you hold out for a few minutes, you see Julien struggling to stay afloat. He takes his shoes off to swim better, which doesn’t work out well when his feet go numb. The cold temperatures get to his fingers too; his fingernails come off with ease in the freezing ocean water.
As you continue to scroll and scroll, Julien begins to hallucinate rescue teams and Charles coming to his rescue. Unfortunately, there’s no way out for Julien in "Sortie En Mer." The game ends with a flashback to someone we can assume is Julien’s wife, and then you get a final POV view of the bottom of the ocean, where Julien lies dead.
All in all it’s a terrible experience. But that’s the point.
The ad is by CLM BBDO for the French nautical outfitters Guy Cotten, who sell, amongst other things, life jackets. The simulator ends with a simple message:
“At sea, you tire faster than you think. Whenever you go out to sea, wear your life jacket.”
Message received. In that respect, it has to be one of the most effective interactive ads on the Internet. There’s something about the simplicity of it that sucks you into the primal state of mind Julien enters when he finds himself struggling in the middle of the ocean.
The dark, infinite ocean. The flashbacks and hallucinations. The discomforting screams of Julien as time slips past him. All add up to a harrowing experience that you’re sure to remember next time you get on a boat (along with your life jacket).
That is, if you ever get on a boat again.

Terrifying Drowning Simulation Lets You 'Experience What It Feels Like to Drown
"realistically reproduces this life and death experience.".
As spring heats up into summer and those lucky enough to have boats bring them out for the season, a marine clothing maker has put together an interactive tool to show why it's so important to wear a life jacket.
Guy Cotten, the "foul weather" and safety clothing brand , created "A Trip Out to Sea," which is an online simulator that shows just a fraction of the terror of what it would be like to drown.
The simulator tells a story of two men sailing when one of them -- the one whose point of view the user shares, making them feel like they are this character -- is knocked off the boat, while an inexperienced sailor is left on board, unable to circle back to save this person.
"[It] makes people sense and experience what it feels like to drown, in the hope of making life jackets a natural reflex," the teaser video for the simulator read.
Watch this teaser for the simulator (Content warning: strong language) :
Guy Cotten's website for the simulation , which also includes some strong language, requires the user to scroll without stopping in order to keep their character above the surface of the water.
"Scrolling continuously, however, is physically and psychologically exhausting. Quickly, tired of scrolling, you give up and drown, revealing the following message: At sea, you tire faster than you think," the description states.
The clothing manufacturer pointed out that many people choose not to wear a life jacket, thinking they don't need one because they know how to swim.
"No matter, whether you merely enjoy water activities, are a boating enthusiast or a genuine professional, in the case of an accident, the chances of surviving without a life jacket are unlikely," Guy Cotten said in its video description.
Test out the simulator for yourself on Guy Cotten's website (it does take a moment for the page to load).

What was the original brief for Guy Cotten interactive website, Sortie en Mer , and how did you evolve that?
It started off as more of a format than a narrative – the beginning in the boat and the final drowning sequence bookmark the experience and the viewer dictates whatever happens in between by scrolling as hard as they can. I collaborated closely with the creative’s from the agency, CLM BBDO Paris, who had done extensive research into the various stages of drowning. My challenge was to devise nuances and details to make the experience compelling and realistic. The piece is told from a first person perspective (inhabited by the viewer). Therefore we wanted to create a sympathetic character that the viewer could literally inhabit. We created flashbacks and surreal moments from this character’s past to add to the intensity of the drowning sequences. The more it feels like you, the more horrific and traumatic the experience.
How did the creative process differ from your usual linear commercials and music videos?
Unlike commercials or music videos I’ve done before, here I had to consider the viewers active role in the film or narrative and create the most thrilling and immersive experience possible.
To a certain extent the technique dictates the narrative. I worked closely with Wanda’s digital team and the agency to create a seamless structure that reacts to the viewer’s decisions. I had to come up with an infinite number of transitions that would satisfy the variables allowing us to transition to the final drowning sequence at any stage of the story.
Developing the idea itself was fairly unnerving. I had to try and imagine what it’s like to drown and die. I wanted to tap into people’s worst fears and create the most evocative experience possible.
What were the main challenges of the shoot and how did you resolve them? On water, underwater – was it shot in the summer time in warm climes?
This was pretty much the toughest shoot I’ve ever done. The challenge was to imitate a real person’s POV. The camera had to be light, easily maneuverable and close to the face so as to be able to get the protagonist’s hands in. Generally I’m not a fan of shooting on digital SLR’s, but after months of testing underwater we opted for the 5D. What followed was a construction of a bespoke underwater helmet cam rig that could hold the underwater housing (see pic).
We shot in Marseille in the first week of January so it was freezing cold and we were restricted by the number of hours of daylight during the two days that were available to us. People were being seasick right left and centre, but that didn’t stop us. The operator was a hero. He pretty much spent eight hours both days in the water with a heavy camera-helmet-rig strapped to his head. Imagine trying to communicate with someone constantly half submerged under water.
Due to the rough conditions on the second day we had to abandon using a live feed due to the danger of the cable forming a noose and strangling the operator, so we had to keep checking after each take. It doesn’t sound like a lot of fun, but overall it was one of the most exciting filmic adventures I’ve ever had the honour of being a part of. We were forced to watch playback when your rocking back and forth on what felt like two meter waves. We came away absolutely soaked. The point is we achieved it and it is proving to be a success, so all the hard work is starting to pay off. The sight of dawn breaking over the ocean was also a bit of a perk!

4. Go skydiving…at sea?
5. surf and slide—12m surf simulators and 3-storey slides, 6. how do i save money on cruises.
You probably already know that, just like anything else you shop for online, you should look out for flash deals when booking a cruise. But other than these limited-time offers, how else can you save money?
We've found that you can get the cheapest cruise fares if you:
- Book well in advance: We're talking about departure dates a year or more in advance.
- Be flexible with dates: Not all dates are equal. Even during the holidays, prices can vary tremendously. If you can, avoid the school holidays or you'll end up paying through the nose.
- Check out the competition: Royal Caribbean may be one of the most well-known cruise operators, but don't forget that there are others too. It doesn't hurt to check the competitor for packages for the dates you want.
Want to save even more money? For one-off expenses like cruises and holidays, we recommend using a no-minimum-spend credit card like these for basic cashback with no hoops to jump through:

7. Which cruise insurance should you buy?
A trip on a cruise is still travel, and travel insurance is still a good idea. You’ll want to make sure you can get emergency evacuation if you need it and compensation for trip cancellation.
However, make sure to check with the insurer whether the policy specifically covers you for cruises.
Most insurers are tight-lipped on their policies regarding cruises, but we found that Allianz travel insurance explicitly cover cruises .
[ms-inline-widget provider_slugs="allianz-travel" insurance_type="travel-insurance" duration="3" category_slug="single-trip" adults="1" children="0" locale="en" country_code="sg" channel="travel-insurance" product_slug="allianz-bronze" ]

Your cruise package may also have insurance bundled in too, but you may want to get it a la carte for more customisability and value-for-money.

Nebraska - lincoln & omaha.
Today, we are happy to share with you a look at two of the biggest cities (by population) that will be featured in our upcoming Nebraska DLC for American Truck Simulator . While both of them share some similarities, each are unique in their own way. Let's take a closer look, shall we?
Omaha Welcome to Omaha, Nebraska, a bustling city with a variety of industries, landmarks, and sights waiting to be explored by truck drivers traversing America's heartland. Situated at the crossroads of major highways and surrounded by key industries, Omaha offers a unique blend of urban excitement and Midwestern charm for drivers passing through or making a stop.
As the largest city in the State, Omaha will offer drivers a range of depots to deliver to and from. You'll find several different industries such as a large Cement Plant south of the city and a mill which may be a little tricky for some truckers to find. You'll also find a lovely view of the Missouri River & Omaha's Zoo from the Train Yard, which is located in the urban area of the city, where several other in-game depots and companies are based.
Drivers navigating around the city will be able to travel on some pretty major Interstate and Highway routes including the I-80, I-680 and US-75. An AI-powered fighter jet took the Air Force’s leader for a historic ride. What that means for war

With the midday sun blazing, an experimental orange-and-white F-16 fighter jet launched with a familiar roar that is a hallmark of U.S. air power. But the aerial combat that followed was unlike any other: This F-16 was controlled by artificial intelligence, not a human pilot. And riding in the front seat was Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall.
AI marks one of the biggest advances in military aviation since the introduction of stealth in the early 1990s, and the Air Force has aggressively leaned in. Even though the technology is not fully developed, the service is planning for an AI-enabled fleet of more than 1,000 unmanned planes, the first of them operating by 2028.
It was fitting that the dogfight took place at Edwards Air Force Base, a vast desert facility where Chuck Yeager broke the speed of sound and the military has incubated its most secret aerospace advances. Inside classified simulators and buildings with layers of shielding against surveillance, a new test-pilot generation is training AI agents to fly in war. Kendall traveled here to see AI fly in real time and make a public statement of confidence in its future role in air combat.
“It’s a security risk not to have it. At this point, we have to have it,” Kendall said in an interview after he landed. The Associated Press, along with NBC, was granted permission to witness the secret flight on condition that it would not be reported until it was complete because of operational security concerns.
The AI-controlled F-16, called Vista, flew Kendall in lightning-fast maneuvers at more than 550 mph that put pressure on his body at five times the force of gravity. It went nearly nose to nose with a second human-piloted F-16 as both aircraft raced within 1,000 feet of each other, twisting and looping to try to force their opponent into vulnerable positions.

This 5-year-old from Gaza is learning to live with one leg and untold loss
Israel-Hamas war: In Qatar’s capital, a compound housing Palestinian medical evacuees from Gaza is a living catalog of what war does to the human body.
April 24, 2024
At the end of the hourlong flight, Kendall climbed out of the cockpit grinning. He said he’d seen enough during his flight that he’d trust this still-learning AI with the ability to decide whether to launch weapons in war.
There’s a lot of opposition to that idea. Arms control experts and humanitarian groups are deeply concerned that AI one day might be able to autonomously drop bombs that kill people without further human consultation, and they are seeking greater restrictions on its use.
“There are widespread and serious concerns about ceding life-and-death decisions to sensors and software,” the International Committee of the Red Cross has warned. Autonomous weapons “are an immediate cause of concern and demand an urgent, international political response.”
Kendall said there will always be human oversight in the system when weapons are used.
As tensions grow, more Americans see China as an enemy
A growing number of Americans consider China an enemy whose influence should be contained, a Pew Research study finds
May 1, 2024
The military’s shift to AI-enabled planes is driven by security, cost and strategic capability. If the U.S. and China should end up in conflict, for example, today’s Air Force fleet of expensive, manned fighters will be vulnerable because of gains on both sides in electronic warfare, space and air defense systems. China’s air force is on pace to outnumber the U.S. and it is also amassing a fleet of flying unmanned weapons.
Future war scenarios envision swarms of American unmanned aircraft providing an advance attack on enemy defenses to give the U.S. the ability to penetrate an airspace without high risk to pilot lives. But the shift is also driven by money. The Air Force is still hampered by production delays and cost overruns in the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, which will cost an estimated $1.7 trillion. Smaller and cheaper AI-controlled unmanned jets are the way ahead, Kendall said.

Vista’s military operators say no other country in the world has an AI jet like it, where the software first learns on millions of data points in a simulator, then tests its conclusions during actual flights. That real-world performance data are then put back into the simulator where the AI then processes it to learn more.
China has AI, but there’s no indication it has found a way to run tests outside a simulator. And, like a junior officer first learning tactics, some lessons can be learned only in the air, Vista’s test pilots said.

Vista flew its first AI-controlled dogfight in September 2023, and there have been only about two dozen similar flights since. But the programs are learning so quickly from each engagement that some AI versions getting tested on Vista are already beating human pilots in air-to-air combat.
The pilots at this base are aware that, in some respects, they may be training their replacements or shaping a future construct where fewer of them are needed.
But they also say they would not want to be up in the sky against an adversary that has AI-controlled aircraft if the U.S. does not also have its own fleet.
Copp writes for the Associated Press.
