What is a tour itinerary?

A well-crafted tour itinerary provides your guests with clear expectations, ensuring that they make the most of their time during the tour.

At its simplest, it is a detailed plan outlining the events, activities, and locations included in a tour. It serves as a roadmap for the entire trip, providing a step-by-step guide for visitors.

Tour itineraries typically include information such as:

  • Dates and times
  • Destinations/stops
  • Activities and events
  • Accommodations and transportation (if included)

8 steps to create a tour itinerary

Whether your tour features historical landmarks, culinary experiences, or adventure activities, these are the steps to craft an itinerary that your guests rave about .

1. Define the tour objectives and theme

The first step in creating a tour itinerary is to outline the purpose of the experience. 

Are you educating your guests or entertaining them? 

Is your tour an outdoor adventure meant to thrill visitors, or a cultural immersion meant to inspire?

Next, you’ll want to conduct market research to answer the following questions:

  • Who are your competitors?
  • Who is your target audience?
  • What are the unique selling points of my tour?

The theme of your tour will guide the entire itinerary. It’ll ensure the experience remains coherent and is tailored to your specific audience. For example, if you’re running a historical walking tour in London, objectives might include providing in-depth insights into key historical periods and attracting history enthusiasts.

2. Research and select the destinations/stops of your tour

Identify and choose the specific locations and/or attractions to be included in the tour. Of course, this will depend on the nature of your tour. A multi-day tour operator will need to research multiple destinations, while someone who runs a walking tour will focus on specific sites within a particular city.

Don’t forget to consider factors like accessibility, popularity, and the overall flow of the itinerary. The destinations/stops on your tour should align with the overall theme defined in step one.

In our historical tour example, stops might include London’s most famous sites like the Tower of London and Buckingham Palace.

3. Determine the tour duration and dates

Now it’s time to decide the length of the tour and the specific dates it will take place. 

Consider the time needed to cover selected destinations/stops and the preferences of your target audience. You’ll also want to think about seasonal factors that might affect the tour, including weather and peak visitor months.

When you present guests with an itinerary, one of the first things they’ll look for is the tour duration and dates that it takes place. This allows them to plan ahead and commit to the experience.

Let’s say the historical walking tour in London lasts three hours and happens every Thursday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the summer, taking advantage of the warm weather and daylight.

For a multi-day tour across the U.K., you’d likely use a combination of high-speed trains and comfortable coaches. A walking tour, on the other hand, would get around by foot. However, if there’s a portion of the tour that requires taking public transportation, make sure to specify that in your itinerary.

7. Explain the meals and dining experiences included

Specify where and what participants will eat throughout the tour. Plan meals, considering local cuisines and popular eateries.

Sharing a meal not only makes a tour more fun but also gives the group space to connect. For tours that involve exploring a new destination, giving guests a taste of the local cuisine will make the experience even more memorable.

Carefully consider the time it takes to commute between one place and another. If you’re rushing, guests may feel stressed and might miss out on the essence of each destination/stop.

Ignoring audience preferences

There’s nothing worse than noticing that your guests are disconnected and disengaged from your tour. The President and Dr. Biden are delighted to welcome members of the public to tour the White House. Public tour requests are scheduled through your Member of Congress and their Congressional Tour Coordinator. Constituents may reach your Member of Congress and Congressional Tour Coordinator through the U.S. House of Representatives Switchboard at 202-225-3121, the U.S. Senate Switchboard at 202-224-3121, or online at  www.congress.gov/members .

Consistent with prior practices, public White House tour requests must be submitted a minimum of 21 days in advance and no more than 90 days in advance of the requested tour date(s). Reservations cannot be accepted for tour dates outside this 21 – 90-day window.  

Public tours are typically available from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, excluding Federal holidays or unless otherwise noted. If your tour is confirmed, please note that you will be assigned a specific time.  All White House tours are free of charge. The White House tour schedule is subject to change, with little notice, based on inclement weather or official use.

If you are a citizen of a foreign country, please contact your embassy in Washington, D.C. for assistance in submitting a tour request.

Identification Requirements

All U.S. citizens ages 18 and older, and foreign nationals of all ages (including children), must present a valid, government-issued photo ID upon arrival for their tour. Acceptable forms of identification are below.

  • U.S. State Department Issued Diplomatic ID Card

A U.S. driver’s license is not an acceptable form of identification for foreign nationals. No foreign-issued state IDs, foreign-issued driver’s licenses, expired passports, photocopies, other transmissions of these documents, or other forms of identification will be accepted. Individuals without acceptable identification, or whose identification does not exactly match the information previously registered, may be denied entry.

Getting Here

Use of public transportation is strongly encouraged, as there is no parking available on the White House complex and street parking is limited. The closest Metrorail stations to the White House are Federal Triangle (blue and orange lines), Metro Center (blue, orange, silver, and red lines), and McPherson Square (blue, orange, and silver lines).

The White House Tour entrance is located in Sherman Park at 15th Street NW and Alexander Hamilton Place NW. If arriving by rideshare, use the White House Visitor Center (WHVC) as the drop-off address. The WHVC is located at 1450 Pennsylvania Avenue NW, Washington, D.C. 20230, which is one block from the White House.

Restrooms are located at the White House Visitors Center, located at 1450 Pennsylvania Avenue NW, Washington, D.C. 20230. There are no restrooms available once you arrive for your tour.

Accessibility

The White House tour route is wheelchair accessible. Visitors who wish to use a White House wheelchair should notify a U.S. Secret Service officer upon arrival.

Guide animals are permitted in the White House.

Health and Safety Guidance

Guests who receive a confirmed tour reservation will be issued a White House Tour Pass ahead of their tour date containing pertinent health and safety guidance.

Know Before You Go

  • Tours are self-guided and last approximately 45 minutes
  • Eat a snack and stay hydrated prior to arrival.
  • Dress for the weather, knowing you will be outside before your tour.
  • Arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled tour time.
  • No late arrivals are accepted.
  • All guests must be previously registered via the RSVP link provided by the White House.
  • Please silence your cell phone and refrain from phone calls during the tour.
  • No flash photography or video recording is permitted during your tour.

Kygo is embarking on his first extensive global tour in six years. As part of his self-titled Kygo World Tour, the EDM phenomenon from Norway will shortly launch a brand-new live tour across North America and Europe. "Kygo's signature piano, as well as strings, singers, and drummers, will be featured throughout the concert," a press statement read.

Special guests Gryffin, Sofi Tukker, Sam Feldt, Zara Larsson, Klangkarussell, Hayla, Victoria Nadine, and Vandelux are coming along on his global rampage. Numerous prestigious venues and amphitheaters, like the O2 in London, the Barclays Centre in Brooklyn, the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, and the Ziggo Dome in Amsterdam, will host some tour venues.

Fans should be aware that the official flyer for the tour says Part 1, which means other dates will likely be added in the coming weeks. Meanwhile, DICK'S Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colorado, will host the opening ceremony on September 7, 2024.

There is much to discover and enjoy in the 2024/25 season. Chief conductor Kirill Petrenko interprets the great symphonic repertoire and opens up new perspectives with music of our time. In addition, our partnerships with two artists who have a special connection to the Berliner Philharmoniker will be intensified: Pianist Seong-Jin Cho as Artist in Residence and Wolfgang Rihm as Composer in Residence. In February 2025, our biennial entitled Paradise Lost? will focus on our environment – both its beauty and its destruction. What Does a Tour Guide Do Before the Tour Starts?

On the outside, tour guiding might look like a fun and easy job. You get to show visitors around the world’s coolest destinations. The attractions practically do the work for you. What traveler wouldn’t walk away happy after seeing the Eiffel Tower for the first time?

But that’s not true at all. There’s a lot more that goes into leading tours than most travelers realize. It’s sort of like being a restaurant server. While they don’t make the delicious food (props to the cook), they’re the ones who must flawlessly serve up the dining experience. 

If the meal is good, but the service, blah, it’s no surprise that some guests will forgo the tip and leave a review along the lines of “we wanted more drinks, but our server was MIA. Thankfully, the food saved it for us.”

The same goes for tour guiding. 

It’s a tour guide job responsibility to entertain guests, interpret the sights, and facilitate the activities — all at the same time. With so many details that come into play, the bulk of making sure everything goes swimmingly happens at the very start. 

So, to avoid guests saying, “the Eiffel Tower saved it for us,” here’s what tour guides should do before the tour: 

Plan the tour to a tee

Winging it does not fly for tour guides — guests notice right away if you’re scrambling to get your act together. Of course, your tour director should already have the itinerary and schedule mapped out, but you can go above and beyond by planning your talking points and other ways to enhance the tour experience.  

1. Know your stuff

Some tour operators have a clear outline for tour guides to follow. They will provide scripts and a binder full of key information as part of their tour guide training . Other tour operators are more flexible and trust their tour guides to run with it. 

Either way, you should know your stuff. That’s rule #1. Before you even start guiding, it’s best to research as much as you can about a destination. While scripts come in handy when introducing a new site, guests will likely throw random questions at you left and right.

And if you’re able to swing back answers instantly, they’ll undoubtedly be impressed. It’s one of the top 10 characteristics of a great tour guide and the most common review you’ll see on Tripadvisor. “Eric was the best guide! He was so knowledgeable about the history of Paris. He could answer all of our questions (and there were many).” 

2. Craft personal stories

It’s not all about the destination; it’s also about you. If a traveler just wants to see the top-rated attractions, they could easily explore on their own. But truthfully, it’s the tour guide who makes the tour worth booking. 

Because for most travelers, a tour guide will be the only authentic interaction they have with a local — as said by tour guide trainer, Nikki Padilla Rivera . And since tourists are often far removed from the local culture, you can help bridge the gap by putting more of yourself into the tour content. 

What do I mean by that? Well, you can provide recommendations about the best places to eat, where to stay, and fun things to do around town. Hands down, your guests will appreciate the local intel. But even better, you can share personal stories of your experience living there. 

Not only will it give them more insight into local life, but it will also help them connect with you better as they get to know you on a personal level. Plus, stories have a magical way of bringing people together. Tour guests will likely pipe up, ask follow-up questions, or bounce off with a story of their own. 

That said, consider crafting your personal stories like factual stories. You know how awkward it can be when you start trailing on and people react with a blank stare, or worse, stop listening altogether. By rehearsing your stories ahead of time, it’ll be much easier to work them naturally into the tour and deliver the punchlines with confidence.

3. Have games in your back pocket

A tour’s momentum can quickly die down during the in-between moments — like on the tour bus, walking from point A to point B, waiting in line, bathroom breaks, etc. While it’s unnecessary to talk the entire time, you can prevent your guests from getting bored by playing a few tour games .

Think Trivia , Two Truths and a Lie , Name that Tune , anything that’s easy to play as a group, but still relates to the tour experience. Basically, whatever you think is fun, go with that, because if you’re excited to play, your guests will feed off your enthusiasm.

Of course, some in the group might not be receptive to the idea, whereas others will enjoy the active participation element of the tour, besides listening to you ramble for two-plus hours. So, make sure to pack what you need for the games just in case, but don’t push anyone into joining. 

4. Keep a list of conversation starters

You might be a natural talker, which is why you got into guiding in the first place. But even the most extroverted people struggle to engage in back-and-forth dialogue. And you can easily make a tour go from good to great by getting to know your guests as they get to know your destination. 

So, here are some handy conversation starters to have ready:

  • How long are you going to be here?
  • Is it your first time visiting?
  • What’s your favourite thing you’ve done so far? 
  • What’s been the coolest thing you’ve seen?
  • What’s the strangest thing you’ve eaten here?
  • What else do you have planned during your stay?
  • Where would you most like to live in the world?
  • How was the trip out here?
  • How did you hear about this tour?

Make your guests feel welcome

One time, I was extremely late for a free walking tour in London. I frantically ran through the streets, texting my friend to see where the group was currently at so I could catch up. When I got there, it’s like I wasn’t even missing. The tour guide didn’t care who came and went, just so long as enough people stuck around to tip at the end. 

For free walking tours, it doesn’t make sense to get to know every single guest when tour groups usually have twenty or more people. It’s impossible to remember that many names and faces from one tour to the next. 

But paid tours are totally different. Guests expect a little more personalization than a quick headcount. So there are two options. You can either have everyone awkwardly introduce themselves at the start of the tour. OR do a roll call while pointing out interesting things about them. 

What’s the difference? With the former, it seems more like your guests are random strangers you’re meeting for the first time (which is essentially true), whereas the latter shows that you’ve been expecting and looking forward to seeing them.

Here are two examples. What do you think sounds better?

  • “Let’s quickly go around the circle, say our names and where we’re from. I’ll go first.
  • “Let’s see if everyone is here. Camila, Laura and Victor? Hi, thanks so much for joining us today! I hear you’re visiting all the way from Argentina. How was that long-haul flight for you? Doug and Mary-Anne? Hello! Happy 35 years of marriage! You’re in the right place: Paris, city of love.”

Trust me; doing your homework and paying attention to the details goes a long, long way in making your guests feel valued. 

But where do you get this information?

Checkfront’s Daily Manifest breaks down who and how many guests are going on each tour in one easy-to-read spreadsheet. Pulling details from the booking form and Guest Form , you can get a quick overview of whatever you need to know about each guest — not just the primary booker.

For example, a tour operator who uses Checkfront as their online booking system (they can try it out for 21-days , if not) can add specific fields to the Guest Form for everyone to fill out before check-in. Such as address, age, email, dietary restrictions (for food tours), reason for visiting, special requests, etc. 

Most of this information is best for marketing purposes or knowing what extra things to prepare for individual guests, like visual aids, audio guides, or pesca-pescatarian food options. But you can still print it off, study the guest list quickly, and hide it on your clipboard as a cheat sheet for introductions. I won’t tell if you won’t. 

Give a detailed tour briefing

Okay, your guests have arrived, checked-in, and you feel confident about leading the tour after all that preparation. It’s go-time!

Hold your horses. Just because you’re ready, it doesn’t mean that your guests are too — they’re going to need a little preparation as well. 

A few years back, I did a divemaster course and had to give many dive briefings as part of the training. I always rushed through them because I just wanted to get in the water and thought everyone else did, too. But I soon realized how important these briefings are once I started diving in other places as a customer. 

New experiences can be a little nerve-racking. While you may know what to expect, your guests do not, other than what they’ve read in the tour description when they first booked. So, you can ease their minds by going over a few things before heading off on the tour:

1. Do a run-through of the route

Start the brief off with a bang by quickly reviewing the itinerary while emphasizing the tour’s major highlights. Whenever I hear what kinds of fish we’ll likely encounter, it gets me so excited to suit up. But more so, it confirms that I booked an awesome dive. Everyone loves a reminder that they made the right choice.

This is also an excellent opportunity to let your guests know about any changes to the tour. “I’m so sorry; we can’t visit the Luxembourg Gardens today. The grounds are closed for maintenance, but that’s okay because I’m going to take you to Parc des Buttes Chaumont, which is one of the most notorious sites of medieval Paris.” 

Your guests will be less disappointed if you’re upfront from the beginning — no bad surprises. 

2. Go over rules and guidelines

Scuba diving can be dangerous, so I never feel comfortable going down until it becomes clear the divemaster puts safety first. I want to know what the conditions are like, what we do if someone separates from the group, how the divemaster will get our attention, what hand signals everyone should use, etc.

While your tours might not be as extreme as scuba diving and other adventure activities, it’s still highly important to let your guests know what rules and guidelines you have in place so that everyone has a safe and enjoyable time. Here are a few things to cover:

  • How you’ll let them know to stop, listen, and give you their full attention — like raising your hand or blowing a whistle (maybe a bit aggressive) 
  • What they should do if they somehow get lost and what you’ll do to make sure no one’s left behind
  • When it’s okay for them to ask questions, and how they can respectfully communicate with other members of the tour group
  • How to be responsible tourists, like re-filling water bottles, using the proper recycling and compost bins, not taking photos of the locals, etc.
  • Specific rules and safety guidelines there might be for your stops, like being quiet in a cathedral, or not sitting on the ledge of the Pont Neuf bridge for a better Instagram photo
  • Your tour company’s COVID-related practices that you expect them to abide by, aka social distancing, hand sanitizing before and after every stop, etc.

3. Leave room for questions

Your tour brief doesn’t have to be a long, drawn-out lecture — hence the name brief. You can’t possibly go over every detail. It’ll take up way too much time, and your guests didn’t pay for a play-by-play. Get the most important information out of the way, and then allow your guests to ask anything gnawing at their mind that wasn’t covered. 

4. Break the ice

Most of the time, a round of introductions isn’t enough to get a tour group of strangers to mix and mingle. A first name and country isn’t a lot for them to work with, and your guests won’t have conversation starters at the ready like you do. 

So instead, it might be a good idea to play an icebreaker that brings out fun and interesting facts about everyone. That way, your guests can discover things they have in common with others in the group, giving them compelling topics to build a connection from there.

I love finding out more about my fellow dive buddies before going underwater, where we aren’t able to talk. It helps us build a fast bond and often leads to meeting up for post-dive drinks. In other words, you get to create new memories for people as a tour guide and potentially new friendships, too — the best part of the job. 

Final thoughts

What tour guides do before the tour has a significant impact on the experience. By putting in the work ahead of time and ensuring everyone in the group knows what to expect, you can start the tour off right.

Stagecoach guest predictions: From Thomas Rhett to Beyoncé, here's who we're hoping for

When you've got musicians like Willie Nelson, Miranda Lambert, Jelly Roll, Leon Bridges, Morgan Wallen and so many others on the Stagecoach country music festival lineup, what more could you ask for? Well, we're asking for some equally as amazing special guests.

Hot off of two weekends at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, the Empire Polo Club grounds have seen and heard a couple of cool surprise acts, including Kesha, Will Smith, Billie Eilish and many others. With Stagecoach closing out the Coachella Valley's spring music festival season, we hope the country artists on the lineup go out with a bang and treat their fans to some mind-blowing collaborations.

Here are some surprise guests we're hoping dust off their cowboy hats and make their way to Stagecoach this weekend.

As far fetched as this one might seem, the clues for a special Beyoncé appearance have never been more clear. During the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, a "Cowboy Carter" sky banner and semi-truck were seen around the Empire Polo Club grounds, making us think Beyoncé would guest during that festival. But because her latest album is country inspired, and the fact that many of the artists on the Stagecoach lineup are featured on it, all signs seem to point to the surprise guest to end all surprise guests this weekend. Her "Cowboy Carter" collaborators include Tanner Adell and Brittney Spencer on "Blackbiird," Post Malone on "Levii's Jeans," Willie Jones on "Just For Fun" and Willie Nelson, who is featured on the album's "Smoke Hour" interludes. Specifically, Nelson's set is billed as "Willie Nelson & Family," so who knows, maybe Dolly Parton or Miley Cyrus also join in for "Tyrant," "Jolene" or "II Most Wanted." Any one of these would be incredible to see live, so here's hoping that at least one happens.

Carrie Underwood

From one female Stagecoach headliner to another, Miranda Lambert and Carrie Underwood would be a powerhouse duet to witness in person. They teamed up on Lambert's "Thelma and Louise"-inspired song "Somethin' Bad" a decade ago, and these two have the potential to bring the house down at Stagecoach. We've already seen what an Underwood headlining set does to a crowd — everyone was singing, dancing and having the time of their life with the "American Idol" winner in 2022 — so we can only imagine how rowdy the place would get with her as a surprise guest.

Dierks Bentley, Diplo

Elle King will be hitting the Mane Stage once again this year and has the potential to be joined by a few guests. She has a collaboration with Dierks Bentley on "Worth a Shot" off of her 2023 album "Come Get Your Wife." The pop-country song can instantly put anyone in a good mood, as if Stagecoach attendees could get even more excited. Diplo has also become a main feature at the festival — he'll be doing a Late Night in Palomino set on Saturday night and he's still got a HonkyTonk on the grounds named after him — so it would only make sense for him to join King for their song "Without You."

Thomas Rhett

From Florida Georgia Line to rapper Lil Durk to Chris Stapleton, Morgan Wallen has no shortage of big name collaborators. But when it comes to Stagecoach, we're pretty sure he'll bring up Eric Church (or vice versa) to perform "God Made a Bar," although that could get slightly awkward given that Wallen was just arrested for throwing a chair out the window of Church's Nashville bar earlier this month.

But if we had to pick a second guest for country's resident bad boy (and who knows, maybe he'll want one to help reduce the spotlight on himself), we'd go with 2022 headliner Rhett given that their song "Mamaw's House" has become a fixture on country radio since it was released last fall.

This is all assuming, of course, that respectable artists like Church and Rhett even still want to be associated with Wallen after his most recent burst of impropriety, although his many issues have seemingly not stopped artists from wanting to work with him in the past.

Bruce Springsteen

OK, this may feel even more farfetched than a Beyoncé appearance. But just go with us here for a minute. What's Eric Church's most famous song? "Springsteen," of course. So wouldn't it be cool if the New Jersey legend joined Church (who apparently loves The Boss so much he wrote his greatest hit as tribute to him) on stage to sing a few songs?

Lo and behold, there is even proof of concept here as Church and Springsteen performed Springsteen's "Working on a Highway" together at a charity benefit for current and former members of the military in New York back in 2018. With Church headlining and the 74-year-old Springsteen not getting any younger, it seems like this would be the perfect time to take their shows to one of the biggest stages in country music.

Dolly Parton

While we're already thinking big, why not go even bolder. Parton is perhaps the most famous living country artist to never play Stagecoach. But we can hardly think of a better way to make her debut than performing with a 91-year-old Willie Nelson. After all, the pair have a long history of both performing and creating songs together.

Other artists not on the lineup who could surprise us:

  • Florida Georgia Line (they're featured on Morgan Wallen's "Up Down")
  • Chris Stapleton (he's featured on Morgan Wallen's "Only Thing That’s Gone")
  • Maren Morris (she's featured on Miranda Lambert's "Way Too Pretty for Prison")
  • Little Big Town (they're featured on Miranda Lambert's "Smokin' and Drinkin'")
  • The Pistol Annies (Miranda Lambert's trio with Ashley Monroe and Angaleena Presley)

Artists on the lineup who we suspect will special guest for each other:

  • Elle King to come out during Miranda Lambert's headlining set for "Drunk (And I Don't Wanna Go Home)"
  • Ben Burgess to come out during Morgan Wallen's headlining set for "Outlaw"
  • ERNEST to come out during Morgan Wallen's headlining set for "Cowgirls" and/or "Flower Shops"
  • HARDY to come out during Morgan Wallen's headlining set for "In The Bible"

Artists we originally suspected but, sadly, will be on a tour stop in another city during Stagecoach:

  • Luke Combs (unless he wanted to fly here from Pennsylvania on Sunday and squeeze in an evening set ...)
  • Lainey Wilson (and she's not only on tour, but on tour in Europe, so she definitely won't be there)

E-bike tour guide pedals Yellowstone, Gardiner rides

BILLINGS – In the winter, Jay O’Connor used to feed 55 horses that in the summer provided horseback rides for fishing or hunting guests.

Now O’Connor owns 40 e-bikes that he parks in the garage for the winter and ignores.

As the owner of Big Sky Ebike Tours and Rentals in Gardiner since 2020, O’Connor said he’s “living the dream” guiding cycling tours in and around Yellowstone National Park. After all, where else can cyclists possibly see bison, elk, bighorn sheep, bears, foxes, coyotes, deer and a variety of hot pools, fumaroles and geysers in one trip, not to mention spectacular views of the surrounding mountains?

O’Connor’s guided rides inside Yellowstone include a 17-mile trip around the base of Bunsen Peak on a gravel service road closed to public vehicles. From Old Faithful, his Geyser Basin Tour pedals to Morning Glory Pool along the Firehole River and then on to Biscuit Basin. Shuttling the bikes he can then skip on to Firehole Lake Drive and ride Fountain Freight Road to Grand Prismatic Spring.

“I don’t do anything on the roads at all,” he said, instead focusing on getting his guests away from crowds.

Last weekend, with the 50 miles of highway from Mammoth Hot Springs to West Yellowstone open to bicycle traffic only, O’Connor was leading tours from Mammoth to Norris Geyser Basin, a 38-mile round trip.

Outside the park, one of his most popular tours travels down the Old Yellowstone Trail to the red-colored rock uplift of Devils Slide and on to Yankee Jim Canyon where the Yellowstone River is forced into a narrow gorge. The return ride stops at Yellowstone Hot Springs for a soothing soak.

“That’s a really popular ride for us because there is so much wildlife in the basin,” O’Connor said.

Costs range from $175 for the Bunsen Peak ride to $275 for the Geyser Basin tour. Four people is the minimum for a tour, otherwise an additional fee is tacked on. Bike rentals are $50 an hour to $100 for a full day.

Up and down

Much like the trails and roads he rides, O’Connor’s business has seen some ups and downs since it was launched.

Opening during the COVID pandemic was a “kick in the teeth,” but then participation in outdoor activities grew because indoor venues were closed. That inaugural year was followed by a solid summer of growth before the historic 2022 flood. The raging waters of the Gardner and Yellowstone rivers washed out the nearby North Entrance road to Yellowstone. Gardiner businesses were suddenly isolated at a dead end. Last year, tours rebounded after the route was reopened, and so far this year O’Connor is quickly filling his summer tours.

“My primary demographic is families and people over the age of 40,” he said.

Feeling young again

E-bikes are also a personal choice for O’Connor. He had a hip replacement last year and was still able to pedal 20 miles a day with the motorized assistance the cycles provide. His first ride on an e-bike made him feel like he was 20 again, propelling him to start the tour and rental service.

“This business wouldn’t work with a traditional bike,” he said.

That’s because when touring, he uses a microphone that connects to earbuds each rider wears. This way he can tell his tour group what power level of assistance he’s at and what gear the cycle is in, so everyone stays at relatively the same pace.

On traditional bicycles, the group would likely be more spread out depending on the rider’s ability, or lack thereof.

Most of O’Connor’s tours are under 25 miles, so the bikes’ batteries last for the entire ride. On longer trips, like in the spring when he goes from Mammoth to Norris and back, he carries an extra battery.

On one of those spring rides into the park, O’Connor came around a corner to find a newly awakened black bear only 10 feet off the road.

“He was groggy,” he said. “He must have just crawled out of hibernation.”

Rather than fleeing from the pack of riders, the bear ambled over to a boulder and curled up for a nap. That’s not something most bike riders will encounter, providing a charge unlike the one e-bikers may typically need.
