Located on the outskirts of Varkala, Anjengo Fort was built in the 17th century by the British East India Company when it chose Anjengo to make its first trade settlement in Kerala. The word 'Anjuthengu' means five coconut palms and legend has it that a small area of five coconut trees was given to the British on rent by the Queen of Attingal and that is how the fort got its name. The fort served as the first signaling station for ships arriving from Britain.   The construction of the fort was commenced in the year 1696, and was completed in 1699. While construction was ongoing the Dutch lobbied the Rani against the fort's construction, as it would impact adversely on their trade on the Malabar coast. She ordered Brabourne to stop building but he ignored her orders. The Rani then tried to starve out the British by cutting off supplies; but as they could be supplied from the sea, the land blockade proved ineffectual. She then sent an armed force against Brabourne but he defeated it and peace was arranged. The fort played an important role in the Anglo-Mysore ...

8. Kumarakom Boat Race

At a distance of 1 km from Kumarakom Bus Station, Kumarakom Boat Race, also known as Sree Narayana Jayanthi Boat Race is held in Vembanad Lake, one of the prime places of Kerala Backwaters . The race is held in September every year during Onam festival. More than 20 boats of different sizes and shapes participate in this event. At a distance of 49 km from Alappuzha, the Krishnapuram Palace is a palace and museum located in Kayamkulam near Alappuzha in Kerala. It is believed that Mother Mary appeared to a few children in this area and asked them to build a church at the place from where a miraculous spring emerged, which exists even today. The church was built and a statue of the Virgin Mary carved from granite is installed here. A 48 feet single block granite cross is located in front of the church, which was erected around 1597. 17. Pazhassi Raja's Tomb

At a distance of 30 Kms from Kalpetta, Pazhassi Raja's Tomb is located in Mananthavady. This tomb is the memorial of the 'Lion of Kerala' Veera Pazhassi Raja, a descendent of Kottayam Royal family. Pazhassi Raja organized guerilla warfare against the British around the year of 1800 AD and he is remembered for his bravery. Pulpally Cave near by is the place where the Pazhassi Raja took refuge until he was captured by the British in 1805. The tomb marks the point where he was cremated after being shot by the British. Sulthan Bathery

This is the biggest town in the Wayanad district. This place got the name from the great hero Tipu Sultan when he evaded the Jain temples here. This place has a great historical significance.

It is an ancient St. Sebastian Church known as the St. Andrews Church also built by the Portuguese in the year 1851. It is located 22 Km north of Alleppey. The feast of St. Sebastian is held every year in the month of January.

Sree Peralassery Temple

The Peralassery Sree Subrahmanya Temple is situated around 16 km south of Kannur city on the Kannur-Kuthuparamba road. Considered as an old temple, it is thought that this spot of worship was constructed by Lord Rama himself. The god of the temple is the serpent form of Lord Subrahmanya thus when inside the temple, one can see many idols of the King Cobra.

The Napier Museum

It got its name from the former governor of Madras, General John Napier. The structure with its abundance of gables and turrets are delightful and the result of the creative ideas of the English designer Chisholm. It is a result of eclectic thoughts and merges different building styles. It is inside the historical center compound and near the notable Kanakakunnu (golden hill) Palace. A vault of fine masterpieces, it shows uncommon archaeological and authentic artifacts including ivory carvings, bronze idols, Stone sculptures and adornments dating from the eleventh century to the eighteenth century.

The main attraction here is the 250-year-old temple car of Lord Vishnu (Padmanabha), which shows amazing creativity. Other than this, objects carved out of wood, antique jewelry, models of temple, and so forth, make the museum worth a visit. The museum also has the name Thiruvananthapuram Art museum. Since it was there from 1855. it is the oldest in Kerala.

Kanakakunnu Palace

The red and white colored Palace is one of the major tourist attractions of the state. Located beside the Napier Museum, it is an architecture classic and is often the venue for cultural programs and exhibitions. It was initially built by the then King of Travancore, Moolam Thirunal on the peak of a little hill encompassed by meadows and grooves, it was utilized to hold royal banquets.

Halcyon Palace

Halcyon Palace or Kovalam Palace was a palace that is now a luxury hotel in Kovalam. One of only a handful of attractions apart from the beaches in this interesting little beach town, Halcyon mansion is a monumental structure with a solid, colonial touch to the design. The design is really an intriguing mix of traditional Kerala architecture blended with the colonial style. Constructed by Rama Varma, Halcyon Palace was at first intended to be a retreat home for Raja’s family. After fulfilling that need for a couple of years, the government of Kerala bought it in 1964 and then it became a lavish hotel.

Anjengo Fort or Anchuthengu Fort

Kuthira Malika or Puthenmalika Palace

The museum has artifacts, wood carvings, paintings, huge chandeliers, marble sculptures, Belgian glass mirrors, weapons, paintings of the kings and also their thrones. Matri Dei Cathedral

Matri Dei Cathedral, constructed in the Roman architecture style, is one of the oldest churches in the Malabar region. It has a 200-year old St. Mary Portrait. It has got the name Mother of God Cathedral.

Angelo’s Fort

It was constructed by Dom Francisco de Almeida in 1505, He was the first Portuguese Viceroy of India. This fort is close to the Arabian Sea around 3 km west from Kannur town in Northern Kerala. It is a huge triangular laterite fort with flanking bastions and also has a canal to shield it from animosities. It has an ocean wall projecting from the fort separating the rough sea and inland water.

Punnathurkotta Elephant Palace

This Elephant palace is one-of-its-kind in the world and is one of the biggest elephant-havens. The 10-acre palace was previously the land of the Kings of Punnathur and it houses more than 60 elephants.

Also known as the Kannur Fort, this spectacular fort was built as early as 1505 under the leadership of Francesco de Almada (Portuguese viceroy). The interesting history which led to its construction states that when Vasco De Gama had visited India for the first time, he received a piece of land from the local king. When De Gama decided that he wanted to build a settlement over it, he handed over the construction responsibilities to Francesco De Almada. The Kannur Fort is an important tourist destination in Kannur attracting several visitors each year.

Famous all over India as the ‘Dutch Palace’ due to being built by the Portuguese in 1555, this Palace is now turned into a museum. The architecture of the Palace is mostly inspired by the Nalukettu architecture ( traditional architecture of Kerala ) with just a tint of European influence. This Palace, although was originally constructed by the Portuguese, was presented as a gift to the then king of Cochin. Visit the Palace to have a closer peek into the lives of the Cochin Rajas.

Located in the Wayanad district of Kerala, these caves are the broken fragments of our ancestors. They consist of wall paintings from the Neolithic Age and the paintings which are deemed to be from the Stone Age are said to be the only ones in all of South India . The structure of the caves suggests that they are more of a cleft; they were formed by a gigantic split in a comparatively larger rock. The Edakkal Caves are a great way to learn about the way the early man lived and behaved. A must-see spot!

Fun Fact: Bekal Fort happens to be the largest Fort in Kerala in terms of area. This incredible fort is made up of laterite stones and is situated on the shores of the Arabian Sea. Many people suggest that it was built by Shivappa Nayaka, and has been under the dominance of several rulers from the Sultans to the British Raj. Originally, the Bekal Fort wasn’t meant to house any administrative activities, therefore does not contain any mansions within. However, being a fort primarily built for defense purposes the Fort does exhibit several features for the same. Also visit the Observing Tower and Bekal Beach situated near the Fort, while you’re still there!

Getting its name when Tipu Sultan took over the region and utilized the Jain Temple there as a ‘battery’, this peaceful town yells historic significance. It is situated in Wayanad and was earlier called Ganapathivattom. Upon its invasion, Tipu Sultan had also built a fort in the region. Sadly, this fort now remains in ruins and unavailable for the public eye. The splendid natural bounty of the town, along with its historical heritage is what drives its tourism. Kerala is extensively known for its immense faith and pilgrimage centers. It is extremely famous and the main deity in this temple here is Lord Subramanya. It was Lord Ram who wanted to consecrate the Lord Subramanya idol in his place. Therefore, he sent Hanuman to find an idol for the same. However, when he failed to arrive at the correct time, Lord Ram consecrated his Peruvala, eventually gaining the name Peralassery. Erstwhile declared as an important trading center under the Europeans, this ancient fort was constructed by the initiative of the East India Company. Bastion Bungalow

This is a very ancient bungalow, which is situated at fort of Kochi. Fort Kochi is one of the very popular tourist places of Kerala state . Currently this Bastion bungalow is a residential house of the area’s sub collector. If you are interested in watching the Indo-European architecture, then you have to visit Kerala’s monument; because the architectural style of this Bastion bungalow displays the Indo European pattern of architecture which also has the Dutch pattern of architecture. During the year of 1667, this historical monument was constructed. This bungalow is called as Bastion, because this monument is located on Stromsburg Baston’s site; this site is of the fort of Dutch. The structural shape of this monument is round ; and the roof of the bungalow is made of tiles. When you go to the first floor of the bungalow, you will get to see the different and interesting wooden portion, on the front side. Fort’s Bastion bungalow was RDO’s residential place and also the camp office. This monument is in safe hand, that’s why this monument is in good condition, because many years before, Bastion bungalow was handed over to the Archeological department of the state.

Because of the great architecture and attractive features of the bungalow, this monument was also used for film shooting from a long time; this place became a favorite spot for  the film industry. There is a belief that this monument has some hidden underground tunnels; but still they are not reveled. This ancient monument is located within Kochi’s center .You will get to see the influence of different empires such as Dutch, Portuguese, and also British in Kochi. There are historical heritage that displays the blend of Indian and European style of architecture. You must visit the whole of Kochi; because you will get to see many ancient things which were witness to important events and occasions. As Kerala is blessed by natural beauty; Kochi also has many attractive natural characteristic. Chittur Garumadam

This monument is made in memory of the ancient thunchath Ezhuthachan. He was a great poet of the earlier times, and had written many literatures, Adhyatma Ramayana is one of his literature art. This great poet had spent his last days in the monument. In this memorial monument, there are some things which Thunchath Ezhuthachan used such as wooden slippers, some idols of God like Srichakra, which he used to worship and also some of his oldest manuscripts and literature.

Chittur Garumadam is very beautiful and elegant because an artistic person lived here. You can see many ancient artifacts which you haven’t seen ever, because all the things which are preserved are used by the great artists. That’s why it has a touch of a great poet’s ambience. Jewish Synagogue

This Kerala’s historical monument is situated in Kerala’s famous district called Kochi. During the 1568, this monument was constructed. This is very much elderly monument of the Cochin city. This is a very historical structure within the world’s common wealth nations. This monument is believed to be proof of mutual harmony of the Kerala state from many centuries. This Jewish monument is still having the earlier testament and it also has the copper plates, which contains the privilege and grants record and intrusted over the Kochi’s rulers. This marvelous religious monument of Kerala state is wrapped by the very attractive and attention creator Chinese tiles, with variety of colors. The very interesting and unique fact about these tiles is not a single tile is similar to another tile. This synagogue’s interior is very nicely decorated by using the huge lighting and Belgian chandeliers. This prayer place contains the memorial which used to present to the Kochi region’s king; this was symbol of affection and love.

This memorial consists very rich and royal crown, which is very delicately carved in the silver and gold, which was gifted by the many guardian, who had been visited this synagogue. This spiritual place is very essential symbol of cultural and religious monument of Jew religion people. You can come to this religious place at any time but not on Saturday and also on holidays of Jewish religion. Reaching at this Kerala’s spiritual monument is not a difficult thing, because it is located in very developed district. Come by air and land on the international airport of Cochin, from here you can easily reach at this Jewish synagogue. Cochin is very systematically connected by roads, so you can come by road also. If you are comfortable in rail then get down at Ernakulam railway station, this is closest railway station, which is about ten kilometers away from this monument.

Koyikkal Palace

This is one of the ancient palace of the Kerala state, which is situated about eighteen kilometers from one of the district of Kerala state Thiruvananthapuram, this monument comes on the way of very popular hill station known as Ponmudi. This historical monument is very much old about fifteenth century. this Kerala’s monument is very much popular within the Kerala state’s history because this palace was the official house of the Perakom Thavazhi. Majorly this palace is of Umayamma Rani. She was belongs to the royal family called Venad. She ruled over this place during the century of 1677 and 1684.

There is a building of 2 storeyed, which has the slanting roof which is known and popular by the Nalukettu. The architecture style of this monument is very traditional type. Within the Koyikkal palace, the Archeological department settled the 2 museums; the names of these museums are Numismatics and Folklore. During the year of 1992, the folklore museum was established; this museum has preserved the various instruments which create the music, household material, material of occupation and folk art models. During the year of 1555, Mattancherry palace was built; the historical story behind this monument is hat this architectural structure was gifted to Kochi region’s Raja, his name was Kerala Varma. After some time, the Dutch empire did some renovation in this Mattancherry palace, in 1663; from that time this palace is called by the name of Dutch palace. Because this monument was used by the Kochi’s king; that why the look of this palace is very much rich and loyal. When you will enter inside the palace, the first characteristic which will capture your attention will be surely palace’s designed ceiling and also mural paintings.

The shape of this historical monument is rectangle which had been made in the style of the Nalukettu. This is very traditional types of architectural style. This Mattancherry palace’s roof is colored in brown and walls by white colors. At the center of this palace, there is a huge courtyard. There is a temple of Pazhayannur Bhagavathy which is placed in the courtyard; royal families used to worship this goddess in earlier time. There are a couple of temples on two sides of the Mattancherry palace; one is of Lord Krishna and Lord Shiva. On the architectural design of this palace is very much dominated by the European types of architecture; it is much detailed, in the chambers and arches. The whole attractive design and architecture is a fine blend of Kerala and colonial architecture.

There are 2 arches, which are placed on the palace’s compound; it has been built in the Portuguese style. The ceiling of the Mattancherry palace is designed by using the brass cups. The flooring of this palace is decorated by using the blend of lime, egg whites, shell of coconut, plant juices and charcoal. The flooring looks similar to the black color marble; this type of flooring is a traditional style. Mural work has been used to design the walls of the palace. This type of art is used in the Hindu religion’s shrine; this mural art has modern art and also spirituality. This art is actually very interesting and amazing, it has different shades of color. After entering inside the Mattancherry palace, one must see the King’s bedroom, it is actually marvelous; you will be shocked, by seeing such a beautiful bedroom; this bedroom is known as Palliyara in the ancient time. The ceiling area of this room is made of wood.

The walls of the room are wrapped by the colorful and eye catching paintings, there are almost forty eight paintings in the King’s bedroom. These paintings look like, they are expressing the story of historical Ramayana. The paintings are in such a good condition that they look like they are new but these paintings are very much old, these paintings are belongs to the sixteenth century. There are also some paintings which are depicting Lord Krishna’s Lila. Some part of the palace which has been renovated by the Dutch empire such as hall and upper side rooms also include the paintings of mural art, these painting has pictures of Lord Vishnu, Lakshmi, Lord Shiva and Parvathi. After seeing each and every aspect of the palace, which still look like new, you will definitely feel how carefully, these old but valuable things are preserved. The walls of the Mattancherry Palace are decorated with various murals that depict portraits and exhibits of the kings of Kochi and are painted in warm colors to lend a homely feel to the palace.

The palace is constructed in a quadrangular shape and has a distinct Nalukettu style of architecture. Nalukettu is the traditional style of architecture in Kerala. There is also a hint of European architecture in the way the chambers and arches of the palace are constructed.

There are actually three temples inside the Mattancherry Palace, dedicated to Lord Krishna, Lord Shiva, and Pazhayannur Bhagavati, who is the protective goddess of the Kochi royal family for decades.

To reach the Mattancherry Palace, you can easily hire a cab or taxi, or auto rickshaws. It is also easy to rent a bicycle in Kochi and enjoy the ride down to the palace. Many tourists also enjoy the half an hour walk down the busy Bazaar Road to reach the Mattancherry Palace.

2. Bekal Fort

The beautiful walkway of the historical Bekal fort and the illuminated beach have made the Bekal Fort a very popular tourist attraction, and it is also a favorite walking spot for the locals. Many Bollywood songs, including A. R. Rahman’s famous song ‘Tu Hi Re,’ have been filmed at this picturesque fort.

The Bekal Fort is constructed in a keyhole-shape, and it stands proud and majestic against the rocky shores of the Arabian Sea. The Bekal Fort was built by Shivappa Nayaka of Bednore in 1650 with the purpose of defending the coastline.

The historical fort is spread over an area of 40 acres, making it the largest fort in Kerala. In 1992, the Government of India declared the Bekal Fort as a special tourism area.

There are many modes of transportation available to take you to the Bekal Fort. You can take a bus ride, which takes about an hour, or you can hire a cab or autorickshaw. There is also a railway station located just about 2 kilometers from the fort.

3. Edakkal Caves

Edakkal caves of Kerala are both historically and archaeologically significant owing to the carvings inside the cave that date back to the late Stone Age, or the Neolithic Era.

In fact, the stonework that has been done in the interiors of the cave is estimated to be as old as 5000 BC to 1000 BC.

The term Edikkal means ‘a stone in between’, and the caves are so named as the term best describes their natural formation. This is because there is a smaller rock that has been wedged between two bigger ones to form a natural cave. In fact, if you look at the caves, they are not a cave but a natural fissure in the rock that has a heavy boulder placed on top. The Edakkal cave is therefore formed on two levels. You can explore the first level of the cave through a small opening. Opposite to this opening is a passage that will take you to another opening, which is located on the roof. This will take you to the second level of the cave, which is much bigger.

To explore the Edakkal Caves, you will need to pass several uneven boulders, an iron ladder, and rock walls that are covered in fungi. The walls are covered with various carvings of human and animal figures. The clarity of these carvings even after so many hundreds of years is surprising and makes these caves even more important.

The months of November to March are the best time to visit the historical Edakkal Caves in Kerala.

4. Thalassery Fort

The Thalasseryfort was constructed with the purpose of getting a firm hold in the Malabar Coast. The fort played a prominent role in the rebellion of the Pazhassi Raja by Lord Wellesley and remained an important military center for the British Army for many years. There is a legend that there is a secret tunnel that leads to the sea and is used as an escape route whenever needed.

The Thalasseryfort comprises of a massive gateway and a lighthouse near the rocky cliff on the beach. This historical fort is constructed in a square shape with massive walls and doors that have many beautiful carvings on them. The fort is built from laterite blocks.

All About Kerala's Popular Kanakakkunnu Palace

The palace is situated on top of a hill. Earlier, this palace was a guest house built in the 19th century during the reign of King Moolam Thirunal of Travancore. Later, it was renovated into a palace, and a tennis court was also built in the courtyard.

The bricks of the wall of the palace are covered in red, and the floors have white stones, giving them a royal yet rusty touch. The palace has Gothic-style architecture, a circular hall, and a neoclassical entrance portico. Inside the building, tourists can also see royal-style furniture. Another highlight of the palace is that it has India’s first digital garden. Any plant in the garden can be scanned with a QR code to know its botanical name, species, nativity details, etc.

The tourists start coming to the palace in the morning. Over the years, many people have visited the Kanakakkunnu palace premises. Even people from distant places come to witness the arts and sports events held at the palace every year. The palace is also the venue for the My Kerala Celebration organised by the Kerala government every year.
