HBO has released the first image of Oscar winner Kate Winslet in The Palace (wt) its upcoming limited series from Succession  duo Will Tracy and Frank Rich and  The Queen  director  Stephen Frears . Production is currently underway in Austria and will continue in the United Kingdom.

No theme is more frequent in movies than very different people taking a journey together. They're initially antagonistic, but they find a growing appreciation for one another throughout the story. Usually, one is careful and reserved, while the other is an impulsive and free spirit. The reason for the enduring appeal of these stories is the eternal human struggle between the ego and the superego. There's something funny but also satisfying about seeing reconciliation, even the integration of the two. The set-up immediately connects to us; all we need is some worthy details, vivid supporting characters, and, if possible, some nice scenery.   

And that is what we get in the watchable French film “Two Tickets to Greece,” the story of two middle-aged women who have not seen each other since their early teens and find themselves traveling together to the Greek Isles. As a character points out to Blandine ( Olivia Côte ), even her name sounds boring. Blandine’s husband left her two years earlier and is about to have a baby with his new, young wife. Magalie ( Laure Calamy ) lives for fun, excitement, and the triumph of petty cons like keeping the tags on an expensive shirt so she can wear it once and then return it. In a brief flashback as the movie begins, we see them as middle schoolers getting into trouble and laughing about it. 

When Blandine and her college student son are going through boxes of things that have been packed away for decades, she tells him about her old friend, and he surprises her by tracking down Magalie and inviting her to meet Blandine for dinner. She does not tell him it did not go well, so he surprises her again by inviting Magalie to accompany Blandine on the trip to Greece. When she tells him they cannot get along, he loses patience. “You have two weeks to kill each other or patch things up. I don’t care which.”

Blandine has planned a stay in a luxurious hotel on the island of Amorgos, where she and Magalie once dreamed of visiting together, inspired by a film they had never watched, Luc Besson ’s “The Big Blue.” But Magalie is a chaos agent. The careful, precise itinerary Blandine had in mind, with a notebook and glue stick to document every step, is jettisoned. Others might make Magalie’s choices because they cannot imagine the consequences. But Magalie is so determined to enjoy every possible outcome that she welcomes the consequences. So what if they get kicked off the ferry boat on a different island than the one with the fancy hotel? No problem! “We’ll sleep under the stars!” 

They end up at a small, rustic inn. Happy wherever she is, Magalie dances joyfully on the patio (and on a tabletop), where the other guests are having dinner. In a very sweet moment, as Blandine watches, she sees Magalie not as she is now but as she was when they were friends, imagining dancing with her as they did in middle school.

What elevates this film above the usual trip-gone-wrong storyline is its gentle exploration of what links the two women beyond their history. This is a movie about processing grief: Blandine over the loss of her husband and the life she thought she would have; Magalie over early trauma briefly touched on as the women finally talk about what drove them apart. There is an element of frantic denial in Magalie’s ebullience and prolonged self-pity in Blandine’s unwillingness to move forward. This comes together with the introduction of a third character, who goes by the chosen name Bijou (jewel), played by the British actress Kristin Scott Thomas (“Four Weddings and a Funeral”). 

Bijou is Magalie’s friend. When the travelers find themselves stuck on yet another island that is not Amorgos, Bijou welcomes them into the beautiful home she shares with a Greek artist named Dimitris ( Panos Koronis ). She shares Magalie’s view that every minute of life should be fun, but in a quieter moment, Blandine learns that there is loss and worry underneath Bijou’s embrace of pleasure. And there is compassion as well. Scott Thomas does wonders with this role, creating a full, complex character and adding depth to the storyline. It is as much due to what she sees in Bijou as in the accumulated frustrations of the trip that lead Blandine (significantly re-named by Bijou) to begin to be honest about her feelings toward Magalie. Three times in the film, we see how uncomfortable Blandine is with nudity, her own and anyone else’s. But she learns that refusing to look left her missing important information and an opportunity for intimacy, not romantic or sexual, just a shared understanding with another person. Magalie learns there is value in slowing down to pay attention to someone else. In these gorgeous settings, away from home, they show us that a journey filled with unexpected detours can end up in a destination better than the one we plan.

Hallmark’s An Ice Palace Romance: Exploring the Filming Details and Cast

‘An Ice Palace Romance’ helmed by director Shawna Steele is a romantic holiday movie that follows Lori Marshal, a former ice skater and dancer who had a terrible fall in the Olympics and had to leave her passion for news reporting. About to crack a promotion at work, she is sent to report on a skating rink being torn down in her hometown of Greenhill, Michigan. The establishment in question is the Ice Palace, a historical training center for winter sports athletes, one that Lori had trained at herself. She hesitantly accepts the assignment to earn her promotion and heads back to her town.

While working on her story, she runs into a dashing man, Mark, and his daughter Zoe, who is an aspiring skater. Given her past, she can’t help but offer to teach Zoe a few lessons in skating. Little did she know that Mark was the owner of the Ice Palace, and as she rediscovers her love for figure skating while teaching his daughter, a new love burgeons between them. Torn between her work and preventing the fall of something so important for her and the community, Lori makes a difficult choice. As the couple explores the town and the enchanting venue of the Ice Palace, you might ask yourself if the movie’s filming really took place in Michigan, and if not, where is the real-life Ice Palace located?

Where Was An Ice Palace Romance Filmed?

‘An Ice Palace Romance,’ was filmed entirely in the city of Ottawa, Ontario, as opposed to its canonical destination of Greenhill. Principal photography began in late May of 2022 and was wrapped up by early June of the same year. Let’s take a look at the specific locals used to set the scenes for the Hallmark romance.

Ottawa, Ontario

The capital city was used to comprehensively lens all the scenes for ‘An Ice Palace Romance.’ Located in southern Ontario, the metropolis possesses a blend of historic and modern architecture with quaint outcrops in its fringe territories, allowing the filmmakers to find all the locations they needed to tell their tale within the local area. The One 60 business center on 160 Elgin Street, in downtown Ottawa, is featured in the film as a big city backdrop representing the workplace of Lori.

The extremely wide structure rises 94 meters above the ground as the 12th tallest building in the city, kept under that height so as to not overshadow the Peace Tower. Right beside the building, filming took place on 150 Elgin Street and its commercial complex as well. The film crew headed further downtown to the ByWard Market and filmed scenes along 61 York Street. The area is known for its specialty food stores, stylish outlets, and street art, in addition to the Ottawa sign.

The Ice Palace itself was created using the Fred Barrett Arena on 3280 Leitrim Road in Gloucester, just south of the city. Most of the film’s shooting was conducted in the sports facility, which remains pivotal to the movie and its story. The government-owned ice skating rink is usually open for public skating and can be rented for its hall and rink. The arena is named after Frederick William Barrett, a national ice hockey defenceman who played with the Minnesota North Stars and Los Angeles Kings between 1970 and 1984.

An Ice Palace Romance Cast

The holiday romance is headlined by Celeste Desjardins and Marcus Rosner. Marcus is from Edmonton, Alberta, and had previously expressed an interest in working with Desjardins as he considers her an adopted Edmontonian, given that her boyfriend, Leon Draisaitl, is a renowned ice hockey player for the Edmonton Oilers, a team Marcus passionately supports. Marcus Rosner is an actor and producer you may have seen starring in ‘UnREAL’ as Warren Johnson, ‘Arrow’ as Max Fuller, ‘Christmas in Maple Hills’ as Walker Jennings, ‘Coupled Up for Christmas’ as Peter Brooks, and ‘Infidelity in Suburbia’ as Elliot Graverston.

Celeste Desjardins is an actress you may recognize essaying the roles of Avery Gilligan in ‘Fashionably in Love,’ Georgia Jackson in ‘Christmas with the Knightlys,’ Zoey in ‘Picture Perfect Romance,’ and Cali Mills in the TV series, ‘Taken.’ The supporting cast for the movie includes Joey Coleman as Chad Reynolds, Julia Dyan as Susan, Jennie Esnard as Dance Instructor, and Kiril Mitev as Ken.

Field Trips at the Palace

 We are happy to offer field trips to school groups at more than a 50% discount from our normal prices, but we understand that not knowing what will be playing in 2 months can make scheduling a trip difficult. This blog should explain the WHY behind some of the things that cause you frustration.

 WHY WE DO NOT KNOW MONTHS/WEEKS IN ADVANCE WHAT MOVIE WILL BE SHOWING. o We typically get our confirmation for the week (Friday-Thursday) on the Wednesday before. We might have some idea on the Monday before, but this isn’t always the case. To illustrate: on Wednesday the 29th, we get the confirmation for Friday the 31st. o The studios make decisions about what comes/goes based on performance and upcoming releases. This can vary widely from week to week, so they often cannot decide far in advance. We only have 5 screens, so we cannot use a small screen to hold movies for weeks like some of the bigger theaters. o If the date is near (within 2-3 weeks) the release of a kid’s movie, we should still have it. Most movies are required to stay at least 2 weeks, but kids movies are usually pretty successful and can stay as many as 7-8 depending on what else comes out. o IMDB.com can give you lots of information about a movie including why it obtained a particular rating. Many movies include parental notes on all of the specific “incidents.” o G rated movies are incredibly rare these days. If you require a G rated movie, your only option may be to show an older movie. o If you need to know the movie title before you can book the trip, we can arrange to show an older film.  WHY WE NEED A DRINK REQUEST: o We prepare your drinks/popcorn before you arrive. This helps speed up your trip. We want this to be as stress free as possible for you. When we have the drinks/popcorn ready, you can enter with your kids and go straight into the theater. We can have your movie playing in 10-15 minutes if all goes smoothly. We discussed this with many teachers and the consensus was that filling their own drinks was generally a disaster. We also use this drink request to make sure you are put in an appropriately sized auditorium. o Our biggest cost is in the concession items so we don’t want to prepare for kids that aren’t coming. o We also use the drink order as a confirmation that you are coming. We’ve had groups in the past just show up for a trip they never confirmed. This is bad for everyone.

 WHY WE ASK YOU TO BRING IN YOUR KIDS BY DRINK or KEEP A LIST OF DRINK REQUESTS o When we prepare the drinks, we typically separate them by drink type “cokes on one table, sprite on another, etc.” It goes much faster when everyone knows where they are going. We also prepare the numbers you send us. We know it’s not a perfect system and kids will change their minds as they come through the line. If you have a list, you can help them remember what they requested. We charge you for the number of drinks we prepare.  WHY WE REQUIRE THE FIELD TRIP REQUEST FORM EVEN IF YOU EMAIL US EXPRESSING INTEREST o This form keeps everything uniform and comes from you. It helps us keep the details straight so that we can make sure we have room for you. It also officially reserves your spot. We have many people ask if a certain date is available but never follow up. We’ve even had people who ask about a specific date show up for a trip without giving us any details about coming. This form just helps us be on the same page.  WHY WE NEED YOU TO COME AT YOUR SCHEDULED TIME o When a trip is scheduled outside of our regular schedule, we have staff come in just for this trip. We typically do not make much, if any, money on these trips and the longer our staff is there, the higher our costs. o If we have public shows scheduled after your trip, your movie will have to be stopped in order for us to get the public in on time. o If we have other trips scheduled for the same day, they have a specific time scheduled to come and if you arrive early/late, we may not be able to get to your group quickly.  WHY WE CAN’T GIVE YOU A DISCOUNT o It costs us several hundred dollars to run the theater, even if are just showing the movie. We are already providing the trip option as a service to the community because it is important to us for kids to have this opportunity. Most of our staff comes from the local school system and understand the difficulty these schools experience when it comes to money. We do have some ways we can help so if cost is the only issue, send us an email and we can discuss some options.  WHY WE NEED TO KNOW IF PARENTS ARE COMING: o We operate with a small staff to keep field trips affordable. It can still cost us several hundred dollars to have a trip because of the basic operating costs affiliated with running the movie. It isn’t just turning on a tv and pushing play. If we know that you have parents coming, we know that we need to have additional staff on hand to process their transactions.

After the last movie theater in McMinn County closed in early 2013, local businessman, Sekhar Reddy, decided to bring a new state of the art theater to the town he’s called home for most of his life.

The theater also has a room for parties and events. In addition to first run movies, Athens Movie Palace offers special events to bring the community together and classic films to give old movies a new audience."

Season 2 – EPISODE 28

It is Bluey’s first trip to the cinema, but she’s worried that the movie will be too scary. When Bingo starts running amok in the theatre, she must conquer her fear and help Dad out.

It’s Bluey’s first trip to the cinema and she is determined she is ready for movies like her friends. But when she hears there’s a big thunderstorm in the movie, she worries she is going to get scared. 

When they get into the theatre, Bingo, who is too young to sit still, spills her popcorn and starts to run amok, and Dad gives chase just when the big scary thunderstorm scene starts. Bluey is too scared to open her eyes, but Dad needs her help to catch Bingo and just when Chunky Chimp overcomes his fear in the movie, Bluey bravely opens her eyes to catch Bingo just in time.
