As a part of Capricornia Cays National Park, there is  camping on the island  for most of the year.

Lady Musgrave Island cruises are one of the best ways to pack in as much action as possible into a day trip to the island. Cruise boats moor alongside afloating pontoon known as ‘Reef Santuary’, a stone’s throw from the island. Cruises include such great activities as snorkelling in the lagoon, glass-bottom boat trips, guided walks, turtle and manta ray discovery, reef fishing and much more.

Playing host to an awesome variety of birdlife is a central forest of Pisonia trees, Lady Musgrave Island’s primary vegetation, with She-Oaks and Pandanus trees also featuring prominently in the island’s makeup.

White-capped Noddy Terns can be found nesting in the Pisonia Trees while the Silver Gulls, Bridled Terns, and Black-naped Terns nest nearer the beach on more open ground areas. Wedge-tailed shearwaters (Mutton Birds) also call the interior of the island home during the summer months, nesting in burrows.

Wading birds can be seen foraging on the reef from September to March. These migratory shorebirds include Ruddy Turnstones, Mongolian Plovers, Bar-tailed Godwits, Whimbrels, and Grey-tailed Tattlers to name but a few.

Most notable of the non-birdlife are the Green and Loggerhead turtles, which nest on Lady Musgrave Island between November and February. The island is closed to campers from February to March to protect turtle hatchlings.

Leopard sharks and Whitetip Reef sharks hunt in the shallows around the island but aren’t a danger to humans.

Snorkelling enthusiasts will find Lady Musgrave Island one of the most rewarding destinations in the Great Barrier Reef, with a diverse variety of fish and coral species creating the perfect underwater setting.

  • A_TAdvisor_Member 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles The trip was ok at best All seemed rather disorganised and rushed. Started with inefficient check in: long, long queue. Commentary was inaudible - could not hear anything. Sitting upstairs we were not aware food had been served downstairs. Drinking water dispenser was often empty as was the hot water flask. The island tour was very rushed and did not allow time to take photos. Scuba diving was not offered/available. Only one very tiny platform available for entering sea for snorkelling which meant a long queue - this prevented the less able or extremely anxious to have the time they needed. Sadly, this spoiled what should have been a memorable experience / bucket list. Full marks for attention to health and safety. Crew were very friendly. Whilst we understand the need to watch tide times - we were not out for 9 hours. Read more Written January 4, 2024
  • Steven D 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Excellent Musgrave Small group and intimate experience made for a memorable day. They had us swimming straight out from the back of the boat to coral, fish and turtles. The staff were attentive and welcoming. The food was good and plenty of it. The glass bottom boat was used to transport us to the island for a guided walk, on the way back to the main boat we travelled over coral and were educated on the size, colour and age of the coral. Staff were happy to answer questions about the reef. It was obvious the staff worked well together as a team which made the day very enjoyable. Read more Written November 21, 2023

Snorkeling was a hit with us all, the water was so clear and the marine life was amazing. The guide on the island talked to the history of how it was formed and was very informative of the bird life. We were lucky enough to see turtles and learn about the coral whilst on the glass bottom boat. A great experience Read more Written September 23, 2023

  • DroopDraws 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Perfect Day on the Reef This was our second time doing this tour. There were only 45 passengers aboard which made the trip feel more relaxed than when the boat is full, obviously we had no complaints about how the tour on a full boat was run though. We again chose to snorkle for the whole day rather than do the island walk & glass bottom boat (sorry again Barry, maybe next time?) Whilst all the other passengers were doing the island visit we had the snorkel area to ourselves which was just perfect. All the crew were happy & friendly & made for a fun day. Food was plentiful as well as being fresh & tasty. We got to see Dolphins on the way out many many fish whilst snorkelling & just as we were about to go back a Turtle decided to stop off for a quick clean & then let us follow her around the cleaning station before disappearing into the Coral. All in all another perfect day spent with 1770 Reef. Read more Written October 15, 2022

The day out these guys provide is extremely enjoyable. The snorkelling is incredible, with accessible bommies straight off the boat for those uncomfortable with straying too far, but a mentionable distance to explore as well. The island tour is a nice experience to relax and learn more about the local bird species. And the glass bottom boat ride was beautiful, the guide knows his stuff too (snapped the pictures of the turtle on it). With drink options (both warm and cold), some nice food and lovely staff, couldn’t recommend a better tour! They did great considering the cloudy conditions we were in. Thank you all! Isaac made us feel welcome and did a great job as skipper. All the staff were super friendly, helpful and fun. Barry the glass bottom boat driver was a wealth of knowledge about the fish and habitat. We saw a turtle and some cool fish and reef under the glass bottom boat. We had a lovely tour of the island and found out about the quirky local bird life (great work staffer!) The snorkelling was amazing - we saw rainbow parrot fish, a groper, turtles, a reef shark, and colourful coral bombies. Perfect weather, an incredible day we will never forget. Beach on Lady Musgrave Island from 1770 Agnes Water

This stunning island is located off the coast of Queensland. It’s part of the Southern Great Barrier reef, therefore, rich in Underwater life and a highlight to tourists. But todays post will explain how to get to Lady Musgrave Island from 1770/Agnes Water, plus my personal experience of the day trip tour.

Probably the biggest drawcard for anyone wanting to visit the Island is for some of snorkelling. This is a brilliant chance to see Turtles up close and experience a vast array of underwater life. Not only that, but you can’t go by the beautiful turquoise waters and an island made completely out of Coral.

Read on to find out what you can expect, what you’re going to see, and whether it’s suitable for you to visit.

How to Get to Lady Musgrave Island from 1770/Agnes Water?

Lady Musgrave Island is 59km east-north-east of Seventeen Sevent y (1770) or Agnes Water, in the southern Great Barrier Reef (or 96km north-east of Bundaberg).

Key Takeaways: Day trip tours are run by 1770Reef from the Town of 1770 (near Agnes Water ) and the boat trip take roughly 1 hour, 45 minutes to get there. Tours consist of snorkelling, Glass Bottom boat and a land tour and your separated into smaller groups to complete each experience.

Alternatively, day trip tours will also leave from Bundaberg and take 2.5 hours one way to get there. There is about 35 kilometres difference between traveling times, which makes 1770 a shorter boat ride. However, the Bundaberg boat arrives at the fixed Pontoon with more available options for Diving and accommodation.

➡  Book your tour to Lady Musgrave Island HERE for Get your Guide

Consequently, we opted for the shorter boat ride this trip but would love to try out the diving one day, along with the “Reef Sleep” accommodation on the top deck.

Lady Musgrave Island, Queensland - Australia

My Review and Overall experience!

The snorkelling alone was worth the trip, with an array of colourful marine life to admire. However, I will admit that the tour did feel a bit rushed at times, with limited time between activities and lunch (one couple that didn’t have time to eat lunch). Therefore, if relaxation is what you’re after, consider the overnight tours from Bundaberg.

Overall, the tour is a brilliant day trip option and provides access to the Great Barrier Reef.

Snorkelling in the Lagoon

As soon as you jump off the boat, you’re amazed by the coral bommies and the amazing fish life available. See anything from Sting rays, fish, corals, mollusks, echinoderms, jellyfish. Additionally, you have reef sharks, sea snakes, marine turtles, and plenty of sponges. Feel free to click and watch my You Tube HERE on my experience snorkelling.

Swimming with Turtles is a big drawcard for any visitor, and there are plenty of them around. I saw at least three different ones in the 1 hour we were in the water. For this reason, I think it’s one of the best snorkelling areas in Queensland .

Snorkelling with Turtles

Explore the Island on a Land tour

The land tour was an easy 45-minute walk through the middle of the island and around one of the sides. There are a massive amount of Birds around nesting. So definitely no looking up in amazement with your mouth open. Don’t be too surprised if you get something dropped on you too….LOL.

Lady Musgrave Island - Land Tour

It was a lower tide at the time, so when we finally made it to the other side of the island, we ended up finding this turtle stuck on low tide. It was just waiting for the tide to turn and head back out.

Turtle Stuck on low tide

➡  Book your tour to the Island HERE for Get your Guide

It’s also a huge turtle nesting area, so you might find several tracks coming up to the beach. Could be something you could see here in person if you’re camping overnight on the Island.

Turtle nesting tracks on the Island

This is something I’ve never seen before but seems to be a common occurrence. Reef sharks swim to the shores of the shallow, looking for small fish to feed on. There had to be around 10 or so sharks around, but most of them were further out. The one photographed below came really close to the shore.

Reef Shark feeding in the shallow waters

Glass Bottom Boat Ride

Glass bottom boat rides are not one of my favourite things to do – I think I would rather be in the water. However, they are a great option for those not getting in the water or small children.

This is a way to experience the reef and listen to the guide at the same time. You can be lucky enough to pass over Stingrays, Turtles, and other larger creatures. Additionally, learning about the bommies, cleaning stations, and the conservation programs in place.

Food, Snacks and Drinks

You can always bring any food or snacks along for the journey, especially for the kids. However, 1770Reef tours do provide lunch, along with morning and afternoon tea snacks.

If at any time you need something more, they have a small canteen available with chips, chocolates, and drinks that can be purchased on board. Tabs are organised, and you will pay the total to reception when you return to 1770.

About the Island

The Island is named after Lady Lucinda Musgrave, who was the colonial governor’s wife of Anthony Musgrave. It’s part of the Capricorn Coral cays National Park and a protected bird habitat.

This is similar to its neighbour, Lady Elliot Island. You have 1192 hectares of reef surrounding the Island and the second most southern chain of Islands in the Great Barrier Reef.

Where to Stay?

If you’re planning a visit, the good news is you’ll have plenty of accommodation options to choose from. I’ve had the pleasure of staying at a few different places, including the NRMA Caravan Park and Sandcastles Resort.

➡  Compare prices for 1770 Hotels HERE , or Agnes Water Hotels HERE with Booking.com

But here’s the thing: whether you pick 1770 or Agnes as your home base, getting to the marina for the boat is a breeze because they’re both just a quick five-minute drive away.

The boat is anchored up near the beach for the day

Did you want to Stay on the Pontoon?

If you leave from Bundaberg and visit the Pontoon, you have the option to stay overnight at the lagoon. This gives you the choice between glamping tents, or bunk beds, and can be booked through the Bundaberg office.

The Glamping option have you sleeping on the top floor of the pontoon overnight and very much a romantic couple staycation. Although, the pontoons also have simple bunk bed dorms that are slightly cheaper than the glamping and more for the budget friendly or singles.

Note: There is Camping option on the Island, completely off-grid, and you must be self-sufficient. They have a composting toilet, but you need to bring all your food, water, and supplies .

Pontoon for Bundaberg lady Musgrave Island Tours

Lady Elliot Island Vs Lady Musgrave

Matt and I have experienced both Lady Musgrave Island and Lady Elliot Island in the last couple years. And it my opinion that your choice between visiting one or the other, will come down to cost.

Lady Elliot Island is only accessed by plane with flights leaving from Hervey Bay , Bundaberg, Redcliffe in Brisbane, and Coolangatta on the Gold Coast . Obviously, the travel time is shorter, but the chartered airplane is more expensive to run and cost more to get there.

The boat ride to Lady Musgrave is longer from both Bundaberg and 1770 but a little more cost-efficient when you have a whole family traveling.

As for the Island itself, I’m not sure there was much difference between the snorkelling and the creatures you were able to see. However, Lady Elliot Island does have an Eco Resort & a restaurant, a much bigger Manta Season and everything run off the Island. Whereas Musgrave is organised from the boats or pontoon.

Great Barrier Reef Snorkelling Tours

Learn more about what you might see.

You can go snorkelling around the large bommies adjacent to the Reef Empress, but you’ll really get the most out of your snorkelling experience by following the edge of the reef. It’s on the Great Barrier Reef edge and around the bommies where you will encounter the greatest diversity of marine life and pristine corals.

While approaching the reef edge and coral bommies you will see large sea cucumbers laying on the lagoon floors. A part of the starfish family, sea cucumbers are known as the vacuum cleaners of the roof because of the way they clean the sand of fish waste and bacteria. The lagoon has large formations of staghorn coral. These are normally very brightly coloured however some only have colouration only on the tips. The blue blanket coral is commonly found growing up the reef edges.

Mushroom corals are the only corals that will move with the tide or current looking like a grooved frisbee. When the feeding tentacles are extended they resemble small anemones. Close to the boat on the reef edge there are some giant clams. The clam’s hard shell is open when they are in feeding mode and will gently close as its primitive eye detects any changes in light.

Another type of clam can also be seen amongst the coral, the burrowing clam which buries itself in the coral.

In strategic positions around the lagoon are ‘cleaning stations’, managed by the cleaner wrasse, a small blue and white fish. The cleaner wrasse waits for the other fish to pass through this area, when they do they will pause while the cleaner wrasse passes over their body eating ectoparasites and mucus off of the fish. The cleaner wrasse will actually enter the mouse and gill cavities of some of the larger fish to complete a more thorough job.

Our snorkelling experience is like no other – all year round it’s safe, no stinger suits are needed and only pristine corals and abundant marine life to see. You can organise your time to spend as much as you want snorkelling in the lagoon and reef. There are exciting outer reef snorkelling options for a handful of experienced and fit snorkelers….hand selected opportunities that will leave you speechless.

FAQ’s – Snorkelling

Do You Provide Snorkelling Gear?

We provide high quality Mares masks, snorkel and fins. We also have optical masks and wetsuits for hire.

Do you have childrens snorkelling equipment?

On board we have plenty of high quality Mares sharky jr masks and snorkels suited for children aged 4-7 and junior fins.

Can I still snorkel if i don’t know how to swim?

Regardless of swimming ability we recommend guests to swim in buddy pairs. However if you are not a confident swimmer our in water snorkel guide will be able to assist by providing additional floatation and reassurance in the water. Life vests, pool noodles and wetsuits are available.

How long do we get to snorkel?

To ensure guests experience the most from their trip to Lady Musgrave the day is divided into activities. Grouping will coordinate snorkelling times for guests and designate time to partake in the island activities including the glass bottom boat and guided island tour. However if guests do not want to participate in the island activities an all day snorkel option is available.

Guests will enjoy up to 2 hours of snorkelling if choosing to participate in all activities, and if snorkelling all day, up to 4 hours.

Are there jellyfish?

In an open ocean environment, we cannot guarantee there will be no jellyfish, however we have never had any harmful stingers, and do not experience a “stinger season” (as is the case further north). The sheltered lagoon prevents large jellyfish blooms in the snorkel area. For guest comfort, wetsuits are available for hire.

Is there any age limit for snorkelling?

No, anyone can snorkel! The entry and exit points to the water are very easy and we make every effort to ensure the safety of all guests. Swim jackets, noodles and in-water assistance from our wonderful, fully qualified and experienced staff is provided. We recommend that children be supervised by an adult at all times. Please note that it is Queensland regulations that any medical conditions which may affect your ability to snorkel safely must be disclosed to our staff. By informing us, we will be able to ensure your safety and make sure you have the best experience possible!

Is snorkelling possible all year round? Is it cold?

Yes, it is possible to snorkel all year round! The water temperature varies from 21 in winter (July/August) to 29 degrees in summer (December/January). Wetsuits are available for hire on board all year round.

Can I touch the reef coral or wildlife?

We are in a UNESCO World Heritage Listed Site and a dedicated Marine Park Green Zone. Under no circumstances must we touch the coral, wildlife or any other naturally occurring part of the Great Barrier Reef. This protects the Great Barrier Reef for the enjoyment of today’s and future generations as well as protecting yourself from potential infection or damage from the coral and wildlife.
