Tour Big Island of Hawaii From Maui

Fly from Maui to the Big Island of Hawaii for a full day tour. Your flight will depart Maui at 7:00 am from the Kahului Airport.  Upon arrival, you will board a comfortable van.  Then get ready for some unbelievable sights as your venture into the world of volcanos.  This is a full day ground tour and a once in a life time experience.

The Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and Kilauea Iki Crater is located 30 miles southwest of Hilo.  Kilauea volcano is one of the most active volcanoes on earth.  You will have the chance to witness the primal process of creation and destruction. The lava is currently traveling from Pu’u O’o to the ocean in a labyrinth of lava tubes much like the tube you will be walking through.  This makes the park one of the most popular visitor attraction in Hawaii and a sacred place for Native Hawaiians.

Big Island Tour Thurston Lava Tube

As you drive the 1/2 mile from the Kīlauea Iki Overlook to the Thurston Lava Tube, the forest becomes increasingly lush.   You will take a walk in the dark through Nahuku, known as the Thurston Lava Tube, a 500-year old lava cave located within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

You will also experience Lava fields from extinct flows and active lava flows & other unique lava tubes.  This tour will also take you through Historic Hilo town, Kuhio Bay, Liliuokalani Gardens, and Wailuku River State Park.

It will be a long day as you have plenty of stops and a lot to see.

We will promise an incredible volcano experience but unfortunately cannot control the weather. Guests will be charged 100% of the tour price for cancellations made within 24 hours of the scheduled tour.

A combined minimum of 4 guests is required for a tour to operate. Should a tour not meet the tour minimum, customers will have the option to reschedule or receive a full refund. Advance notice will be provided at least 12 hours before the start time.

How large will my tour be? We operate Mercedes Sprinter mini-coaches with a maximum capacity of 14 passengers. If you’re looking for a private, romantic getaway for two, a small group of just a few, a large corporate event or wedding, we can handle up to 80 passengers at one time!

How comfy are the vehicles? Very! Our guides want to work for us because we pamper the guests AND the guides! Having driven low-roof, hard-seated, worn-out vans in the past, we understand the importance of being comfortable on the ride to the volcano (or around the island!)

Maintaining a fleet of Mercedes Benz passenger vans is more expensive than using inferior vehicles, but we never cut corners on safety or customer service – ever.

Our brand new vehicle even has reclining leather seats! Our vans have high roofs to maneuver through the cabin, adjustable air conditioning, seatbelt extensions, cup holders, and large windows for the best views. Our audio/visual package is top-of-the-line with a large flip-down monitor and separate speakers for video and guide headset. This technology allows for the driver/guide to show video while narrating; it’s the ultimate way to cruise the Big Island!

Where do the tours start? Free front door pick-ups at all major West Hawaii hotels and resorts. We also offer the option to meet at a central meeting point to accommodate a busy vacation schedule, if you prefer. For bed and breakfasts or smaller resorts, we’re happy to work with you. Leave the driving to us!

Can you accommodate wheelchairs? Our vans are equipped to handle the easy storage of a collapsible wheelchair or other medical equipment. We do not have a wheelchair lift, however. We have also installed an extra hydraulic side step for extra easy on and off for all riders.

How much walking or hiking will I be doing? Nearly all tours include the opportunity for a few short walks. However, none of them include any walking longer than 20 minutes with the exemption of the Kona Coffee, Cloud Forest, and Brewery Experience. Should guests choose to skip any of our short walks, guides are happy to make further accommodations.

For guests wanting to do extensive hiking, we are glad to customize a private tour to cover as much as much ground as you like. Our hiking guides are in excellent shape and will be excited to show off some of the many beautiful hiking trails here on the Big Island.

Passengers traveling with a collapsible wheelchair or walker are more than welcome. Please note, our mini-coaches are equipped to handle easy storage of a wheelchair or other medical equipment. We do not have a wheelchair lift on our vehicles at this time.

What should I wear? What should I bring? Although Hawaii is home to the endless summer, there are places and times when the temperature can drop substantially. Temperatures at the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park can range from 50 to 75 degrees F. Saddle Road temperatures can get even chillier, to perhaps 40 degrees F. recommends wearing comfortable footwear, a hat and sunglasses, and shorts or long pants. Most guests wear a light jacket or bring long pants for after sunset. You have plenty of opportunities to change as the weather changes frequently. Oh, don’t forget your camera!

Are snacks, meals, and tips included in tour prices? We’ve chosen to work with the best restaurants and caterers on the Big Island to bring our guests an experience of all five senses. We like to eat well and our guests do too!

Tipping is, of course, at the discretion of the tour guest but is customary when great service has been provided. We think our professional tour guides are the very best on the planet and we know they appreciate receiving acknowledgments for their expertise, humor, and ability to make your tour memorable!

Will my cell phone work during my tour? Although some cell phone carriers have spotty coverage on the Big Island, we’ll be within cell phone range for most of the tours. Private or charter tours to Waipio Valley will have very limited cell phone coverage. Locals seem to prefer it that way, too. We have a charger on board in case your battery runs low, but some guests bring their own mobile battery charger. Then again, it might actually be nice to set down your phone for a while, too. We also rely on “The Coconut Wireless” or shouting across canyons to communicate.

Do you operate tours on holidays? On most holidays, we do operate. However, we do not operate our regular tour on the Ironman World Championships in October, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day. Our suppliers don’t operate on those days, so we’ve elected to do the same. Our guides have to get to the beach sometimes, right? If you or your group do wish to tour on a holiday, call us and we will be happy to make arrangements with other restaurants that may be operating that day.

I can not even describe my favorite part because everything was awesome to see and eat at. Thomas made sure we had the best experience. And did not miss a thing. We visited black sand beach. • Shandent 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Great Trip but DON'T sit in the last row of the van. We had a wonderful trip, however, we regret being the last family to be picked up because the only seats left were at the back of the van. Sitting in the back of a 15 seater van wasn't the best on a road filled with one switchback after another. My husband, daughter and I were nauseous for much of the trip:( Other than that the driver of our tour did a fantastic job of explaining the history of the areas we stopped at, chose all the best stop sites (with actual plumbed restrooms not the porta potty's) and knew all of the vendor sites we would enjoy (coconut ice cream, banana bread, chocolate, etc.). Having a driver allowed us to all see the sites instead of one of us keeping our eyes on the road. That was nice...just get picked up first. If you are adventurous, however, you can easily do the trip on your own and save $300 Can per person. It was quite a costly 8 hour trip. Yes it would have felt more "worth it" if we hadn't been so nauseous. Read more Written March 22, 2024

Volcano Explorer Waikoloa Departure

Volcano explorer tour from waikoloa, visit the world's most active volcanoes.

You’re standing on what feels like the top of the world as a surreal landscape engulfs you. Here, at the top of the Kilauea volcano, a patchwork of jagged rocks, boulders, and craggy outcroppings are the result of ancient volcanic eruptions. Renowned scientists and scholars have stood in your footsteps before, studying this active volcano said to be governed by the Hawaiian Goddess of fire, Pele. It is a humbling experience that fills you with a deep sense of respect for the power and unpredictability of nature. This is the heart of Hawaiʻi — its volcanoes — and you are feeling its pulse in the company of your small group of friends or family for a memory that will last a lifetime.

Day Time Tour:

This 8-hour Volcano Explorer tour takes you through the spectacular Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park to the Kilauea Volcano, with minimal stops along the way. Admire the scenery that makes Hawaiʻi so special. Designed for visitors short on time, while leaving you free to explore the most amazing natural landscapes of Hawaiʻi Island without the usual tourist stresses. The Explorer tour includes: beverages, snack baskets, lunch or dinner, park fees, and transportation.

Tour pickup: Begin your tour at the centralized destination at Starbucks in the Queens Marketplace in Waikoloa Village. Relax in comfort en route to Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park which is considered to be one of Hawaii’s top natural attractions. Leave your vehicle in peace knowing it is in a well-lit and monitored lot.

Rainbow Falls/Hilo Town: The scenery on this side of the island is the postcard-perfect example of Hawai’i – a lush rainforest that is home to the 80-foot-tall Rainbow Falls. The waterfall plunges over a natural lava cave and into the Wailuku River below. It is said that the Hawaiian goddess Hina, mother of the storied demigod Maui, dwells in the lava cave behind Rainbow Falls. On a sunny day, rainbows reflect off the mist of the falls, and it is perfectly magical.

Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park: The crown jewel of the Big Island contains two of the world’s most active volcanoes – Kilauea and Mauna Loa. We explore the Visitor’s Center, feel the heat from the steam vents, and venture to the Kilauea and Kilauea Iki craters. It is then a short 20-minute hike through a 500-year-old cave called “Nahuku” or the Thurston Lava Tube. This cave sits at 3,900 feet elevation, which is only a fraction of the Mauna Loa peak at 13,679 feet elevation. The visitors’ center hosts interesting and interactive displays. Please note: In the event of an active lava flow or an eruption that poses a threat, we will not be able to access certain parts of the park for safety reasons.

Treat yourself to Big Island Candies: The delicious smell of freshly baked shortbread welcomes you in the parking lot, enticing you to enter the showroom. The showroom is air-conditioned and filled with their famous cookies, fudge, and chocolates. You can sample, and buy these delicious treats as souvenirs (at your own expense).

Tour drop-off: When your tour comes to an end, return in comfort to the drop-off point at Starbucks in the Queens Marketplace in Waikoloa Village where your adventure began.

What is the group size of a Volcano Explorer Tour? Kailani Tours prefers small-group experiences, generally booking no more than 12 guests per vehicle. The Mercedes fleet consists of 15 passenger vehicles. If you’re looking for something even more intimate, private tours can also be arranged.

How crowded does it get at the stops on a Volcano Explorer Tour? While we cannot predict the crowds at popular destinations, we can assure you that our tours have itineraries best suited to avoid the most popular windows of time at specific destinations. We also have daily standing reservations with the Winery to ensure our groups are shown priority attention.

Can you accommodate wheelchairs? Though we have a compact collapsible wheelchair available for guests, our guides cannot push/assist with wheelchair mobility. Our tours are active and require some physical exertion. While on tour guests may experience some or all of the following: a large step up into the van, tight aisles, steep hills in either direction, stairs, uneven surfaces, wet surfaces, and loose sand. If you have any questions or would like to know more details about the physical aspects of your specific tour, please contact Kailani Tours staff at 808-938-4057 or [email protected] .

What should I bring on a Volcano Explorer Tour? Kailani Tours Hawaii will provide your meals, snack baskets, beverages, hiking gear, jackets, parkas, umbrellas, flashlights, other related gear for all weather conditions, and items to help with car sickness/nausea. Please come prepared with close-toed shoes, a hat, sunscreen, and a camera.

Since gathering these details is time sensitive, we look forward to hearing from you soon.

Who is this tour suitable for? This is the ideal Big Island tour for families, couples, friends, and solo travelers who want to see what the Big Island has to offer in a shorter amount of time. We achieve this schedule by picking up at one centralized location in Kailua-Kona. We welcome ages 5 and up on this public Volcano Explorer Tour. Choosing a private tour option is required for children under 5 years of age.

I’m traveling with children, what should I know? Infants, toddlers, or children under 5 years of age are not permitted on public tours, a private tour will need to be secured for families traveling with small children. To abide by Hawaiʻi State Law all children 3 years and younger must be in a proper safety seat. Children ages 4 to 7 who weigh between 40 and 80 pounds and are less than 57 inches tall must be in a booster seat. We have all child seat options available upon request. Is alcohol allowed on tour? Hawai’i laws do not permit the consumption of or an open container of alcohol in any vehicle. There are stops on the tours that offer adult beverages that you are able to purchase specifically. We ask you to remember restrooms are not always readily available and motion sickness is already a common occurrence on island roads. We ask that you drink responsibly while in our care. Kailani Tours reserves the right to ask a guest to disembark if necessary.

What locations do you pick up from? In order to keep our driving time to a minimum for the Volcano Explorer Tour we offer only one centralized location for this tour. You will meet your guide at the Kailua-Kona Target parking lot near McDonald’s on Makala Boulevard.

Are tips or gratuities required? Tips and gratuities are not required, they are greatly appreciated though. Your guide works hard to keep you safe, entertained, and satisfied for 11+ hours. The wealth of information you’ll be exposed to is impressive. The guides spend a lot of time training and perfecting their skills for you. So, if you enjoy yourself, if your guide gives impeccable attention to your needs, and if you feel safe in their care, then show them your appreciation for a job well done! Of course, this is only a recommendation but common tipping for full-day excursions ranges between $20-$40 per person.

What are the benefits of a Private tour? The most common reasons for guests to choose a private tour over a public tour include: the ability to go at your own pace, a customizable itinerary with tour flexibility, customizable timing, customizable pickup/drop off locations, upgraded meals/snack baskets/beverages, no other personalities/strangers, not waiting on rouge public participants, more intimate, any age is permitted, and you’ll be placed with a tenured guide. We have luxury SUVs available for smaller parties (1-5 passengers) and Mercedes Sprinter or Streamliner Vans for larger parties (5-12 passengers).

Introduction

Are you visiting the beautiful island of Maui and want to explore the neighboring Big Island for a day trip? You’re in luck! Hawaii offers a diverse range of stunning islands, each with its own unique attractions and experiences. The Big Island, also known as Hawaii Island, is the largest of the Hawaiian islands and offers breathtaking landscapes, active volcanoes, and rich cultural heritage.

Getting from Maui to the Big Island for a day trip may seem like a logistical challenge, but there are several options available to make your journey seamless and enjoyable. Whether you prefer the convenience of a short flight, the scenic route by ferry, the guidance of a tour, or the freedom of a private boat, you can easily make the trip and explore the wonders of the Big Island in just one day.

In this article, we will explore the various options for traveling from Maui to the Big Island for a day trip. Each option has its own advantages and considerations, so you can choose the one that best fits your preferences and schedule. So, let’s dive in and discover how you can embark on an unforgettable adventure to the Big Island from the shores of Maui.

Option 1: Inter-Island Flights

One of the quickest and most convenient ways to get from Maui to the Big Island for a day trip is by taking an inter-island flight. There are several airlines that offer regular flights between the islands, providing you with the opportunity to maximize your time and explore the Big Island’s wonders at your own pace.

Maui’s main airport, Kahului Airport (OGG), offers numerous daily flights to the Big Island’s two major airports, Hilo International Airport (ITO) and Kona International Airport (KOA). The flight duration between Maui and the Big Island is approximately 30-45 minutes, making it a convenient option for day trippers.

When considering inter-island flights, it’s important to do some research and compare prices and schedules to find the best option for you. Some popular airlines that operate inter-island flights include Hawaiian Airlines, Mokulele Airlines, and Southwest Airlines. These airlines offer competitive rates and convenient flight times, allowing you to plan your day trip efficiently.

Once you arrive at either Hilo or Kona airport, you can rent a car or hire a taxi to explore the Big Island’s attractions. Hilo, located on the eastern side of the island, offers access to stunning waterfalls, lush rainforests, and the famous Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Kona, on the western side, is known for its beautiful beaches, world-class resorts, and vibrant cultural sites.

Keep in mind that inter-island flights require some planning in terms of booking in advance and being mindful of flight availability. It’s recommended to book your flights well ahead of time, especially during peak travel seasons, to secure your preferred flight times and avoid any last-minute hassles.

Another advantage of taking an inter-island flight is the opportunity to enjoy spectacular aerial views of the Hawaiian islands. As you soar through the sky, be sure to have your camera ready to capture the breathtaking landscapes, volcanic formations, and crystal-clear waters that make Hawaii a true paradise.

Overall, opting for an inter-island flight from Maui to the Big Island for a day trip provides you with the convenience and flexibility to explore the various attractions and natural wonders that the Big Island has to offer. It’s a great choice for those looking to make the most of their time and experience the highlights of the island in a single day.

Option 2: Ferry Services

If you prefer a more leisurely and scenic route, taking a ferry from Maui to the Big Island is a fantastic option. Although it takes longer compared to an inter-island flight, the ferry ride offers a unique experience and allows you to soak in the beauty of the Pacific Ocean as you journey from one island to another.

Currently, there is one ferry company that operates regular service between Maui and the Big Island: the Expeditions Maui-Lahaina to Lanai Ferry. The ferry departs from Lahaina Harbor in Maui and arrives at Manele Harbor in Lanai. From Lanai, you can catch another ferry that will take you to the Big Island’s Kaunakakai Harbor in Molokai.

Once you reach Molokai, you can rent a car or take a taxi to explore the island’s magnificent sights, such as the towering sea cliffs of Kalaupapa National Historical Park or the beautiful Papohaku Beach. From Molokai, you can catch a shuttle or hire a taxi to travel to the Big Island’s nearby airport, where you can continue your day trip adventure.

It’s important to note that ferry schedules and availability may vary, so it’s essential to check the Expeditions website or contact them directly to confirm the departure times and make reservations in advance. Planning ahead will ensure you have a smooth and enjoyable journey to the Big Island.

While the ferry ride may take longer than a flight, it offers stunning ocean views and the chance to spot marine life, such as dolphins or even whales during the winter months. The gentle sway of the boat combined with the fresh ocean breeze creates a tranquil and relaxing atmosphere that allows you to truly immerse yourself in the beauty of Hawaii’s waters.

Keep in mind that the ferry service between Maui and the Big Island is subject to weather and sea conditions. Therefore, it’s advisable to check for any updates or potential cancellations due to adverse weather before embarking on your day trip.

Opting for a ferry service from Maui to the Big Island is an excellent choice for those who want to enjoy a scenic journey and experience the peacefulness of the ocean. It allows you to appreciate the natural beauty of the Hawaiian islands and create unforgettable memories along the way.

Option 3: Guided Tours

If you prefer a hassle-free and informative way to explore the Big Island from Maui, joining a guided tour is a great option. Guided tours offer the advantage of having an experienced and knowledgeable guide who can enhance your day trip by providing insights, historical context, and insider tips about the Big Island’s attractions.

There are various boat rental companies in Maui that offer a range of vessels, from small motorboats to luxury yachts, depending on your preferences and group size. Renting a boat gives you the flexibility to plan your own route and visit the attractions that interest you the most.

Before embarking on your private boat adventure, it’s important to familiarize yourself with the regulations and guidelines for boating in Hawaiian waters. Ensure that you have the necessary boating licenses or certifications if required and that you are aware of any restricted areas or protected marine environments.

It’s important to plan your boat rental in advance to secure your preferred vessel and ensure availability. Check with rental companies for any additional services they may offer, such as guided tours or the option to hire a captain or crew to navigate and enhance your experience.

US senator tours Hilo, visiting hula hālau, small businesses and $4.8M paving project

volcano tours from maui to the big island

Senator Mazie K. Hirono (D-HI) recently spent a day in Hilo where she met with Lahainaluna students participating in the 61st Annual Merrie Monarch Festival, toured small businesses participating in this year’s 8th Hawai‘i on the Hill and viewed the Puainako Paving Project at Waiākea Intermediate School.

Sen. Hirono started the day meeting with 15 students from Lahainaluna High School on Maui who are participating in the Merrie Monarch Festival. The students are members of the Papa Hula O Lahainaluna hālau and are being hosted by the YMCA of Hawai‘i Island during their visit to Hilo.

Sen. Hirono had brunch with the students and spoke with them about how she and the rest of the Hawai‘i congressional delegation will continue working to make sure the Lahaina community has the necessary resources to heal and recover. This year’s Merrie Monarch Festival honors the people of Maui, in the wake of last year’s devastating wildfires.

Sen. Hirono then visited Big Island Coffee Roasters and Creative Arts Hawai‘i, where she met with business owners and employees and spoke with them about how they started, grew their businesses and what they expect for the future. Following these visits, Sen. Hirono, a member of the Senate Small Business and Entrepreneurship Committee, visited craft fair vendors at the Merrie Monarch Festival.

Following the small business visits, Sen. Hirono ended her day viewing the Puainako Street paving project near Waiākea Elementary and Intermediate schools in Hilo with representatives from the Hawaii Department of Transportation. The paving project was funded by the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, bipartisan legislation that Sen. Hirono voted to pass in 2021.

The $4.8 million project will reconstruct the lower portion of the road, improve the connections between the elementary and intermediate school parking areas, and help reduce traffic back-ups during school drop-off and pick-up times.

(BIVN) – U.S. Senator Mazie Hirono (D, Hawaiʻi) was in Hilo on Thursday, making various stops while in town.

“During my visit to Hilo, I spent the day meeting with students and businessowners, and viewed a local infrastructure project funded by the federal government,” said Senator Hirono in a news release. “As we continue our support for Maui’s recovery from last year’s wildfires, it was great to see Lahainaluna students—honored guests of this year’s Merrie Monarch Festival—while they were being hosted by the YMCA of Hawaii Island, as they prepared to perform later in the evening.”

From the office of Senator Hirono:

Hirono started the day meeting with 15 students from Lahainaluna High School on Maui who are participating in the Merrie Monarch Festival. The students are members of the Papa Hula O Lahainaluna halau and are being hosted by the YMCA of Hawaii Island during their visit to Hilo. Senator Hirono had brunch with the students and spoke with them about how she and the rest of the Hawaii congressional delegation will continue working to make sure the Lahaina community has the necessary resources to heal and recover. This year’s Merrie Monarch Festival honors the people of Maui, in the wake of last year’s devastating wildfires.

Senator Hirono then visited Big Island Coffee Roasters and Creative Arts Hawaii, where she met with businessowners and employees and spoke with them about how they started, grew their businesses, and what they expect for the future. Following these visits, Senator Hirono, a member of the Senate Small Business and Entrepreneurship Committee, visited craft fair vendors at the Merrie Monarch Festival.

“Hawaii Island is also home to many successful local businesses, and as we get ready to welcome some of these businesses to Washington, D.C. for Hawaii on the Hill, I enjoyed connecting with these entrepreneurs and learning more about their work,” Sen. Hirono added.

Following the small business visits, Senator Hirono ended her day viewing the Puainako Street paving project near Waiakea Elementary and Intermediate schools in Hilo with representatives from the Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT). The paving project was funded by the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), bipartisan legislation that Senator Hirono voted to pass in 2021. The $4.8 million project will reconstruct the lower portion of the road, improve the connections between the elementary and intermediate school parking areas, and help reduce traffic back-ups during school drop-off and pick-up times.

Sen. Hirono added that the project “will provide much needed repairs to improve road safety for students and the Hilo community.”

Discover Hawaii's Best Kept Secrets With These Top 10 Bucket List Tours

T here isn't another place in the world that holds the same charm that Hawaii does. Comprised of 8 major islands, and 130 lesser islets, the 50th state is a unique tropical paradise filled with good people, good food, and beautiful landscapes. From the delightful simpleness of a Loco Moco in Maui to catching waves in Lanikai Beach , there's always something to do in Hawaii.

But there's way much more beauty and excitement hidden underneath the island's surface, and it's available for everyone who chooses to explore it with the help of day-long tours that focus on the best of the best.

Molokini Crater And Turtle Town Snorkeling

The Molokini Crater is a perfect example of Hawaii's beautifully unique landscapes. The crescent-shaped piece of land is a crater formed by a partially submerged extinct volcano, and the side opening is more than enough for boats to enter and spend some time inside.

But the best part of touring here is what's under the surface, as the coral gardens that surround the crater are known as Turtle Town . Snorkeling within the Molokini Crater ensures a great view of the underwater plants, the huge variety of fish, and, of course, the sea turtles that inhabit the place.

  • Starting point: 300 Maalaea Road, Wailuku
  • Price: $150 per adult, $110 per child

Circle Island Tour

As one of Hawaii's main islands, Oahu has a plethora of sightseeing spots and available activities . And the Circle Island Tour mixes the most picturesque and historical highlights of Oahu along Kamehameha Highway, like Hanauma Bay Lookout and Diamond Head . It also includes a visit to the Polynesian Cultural Center , voted Hawaii’s #1 visitor attraction by USA Today, to learn about the state's history and enjoy its culture.

  • Starting point: Waikiki
  • Price: $145 per person

Kauai ATV Tour

Another of the big ones in the state, Kauai Island's scenery is a bit more peculiar than the rest. Sure, it still has amazing beaches and tropical landscapes , but perhaps its most outstanding feature is the island's mountains and rustic driveways. Which, for people who don't mind getting splashed with a bit of mud, is best explored in Kauai's ATV Tour .

The tour takes people through valleys, canyons, and plantations while learning about local history from the designated guide.

  • Starting point: 3477A Weliweli Road, Koloa
  • Price: $380 for 2 people

Kaumana Caves State Park Tours

Not every adventure has to be in the outdoors while under the sun, and the Kaumana Caves State Park is perfect for spelunkers (and vampires). The Kaumana is a massive system of caves created by the eruption and lava flow of the Mauna Loa volcano in 1881, forming a 25-mile-long tube, and time has made it into a whole underground ecosystem.

Although the travel from the entrance of the park to the caves is more like a hike than a tour, and entry to the caves is almost immediately cut off due to entering into private property, the Kaumana park still makes for a quick activity that showcases Hawaii's volcanic past.

  • Location: 1492 Kaumana Drive, Hilo
  • Price: No admission fee

Volcano Safari

Speaking of volcanoes, for people who want more "active" entertainment, the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park , and the Volcano Safari Tour flies travelers high above one of the most breathtaking destinations on The Big Island.

The main focus point of the whole park are the Mauna Loa and KÄ«lauea volcanoes , which are both the largest and most active ones in the state. Mauna Loa is the largest active volcano on the planet today. The helicopters fly well above the "splash zone," so there's no need to worry about being in any real danger.

  • Starting point: Hilo Airport
  • Price: $320 per person

Manta Ray Night Snorkeling

Most people think about going to the ocean in the middle of the night and immediately go "NOPE," but that's because they haven't lived the ethereal-like experience that is being surrounded by alien-like creatures where the only light source is the moon and the suits' equipment.

Sailing from the shores of Kona, a group of instructors first give a quick training session before getting geared and peacefully sharing the manta rays' spotlight. The tour also offers an alternative for people who want to tag along on the trip without leaving the boat.

  • Starting point: 74-425 Kealakehe Parkway
  • Price: $138 per person ($94 for only the boat ride)

Waikiki Atlantis Submarine Adventure

Still want to experience what's underneath the surface, but aren't quite sure about getting wet or having to get too close to the animals? Atlantis Adventures offers a unique way of exploring Hawaii's reefs, fauna, and sunken structures that adorn this treasured site.

Apart from Waikiki, the Atlantis also holds tours along the Kona and Maui areas to show more about the state's underwater history.

  • Starting point: Hilton Hawaiian Village Waikiki Beach Resort
  • Price: $180 per adult, $80 per child

The Waikiki Atlantis Submarine does NOT have restrooms installed, so be sure to tag along with an empty tank.

Mauna Kea Summit Tour

Just like Hawaii has beauty under its blue waters, it also has unbelievable views high above the clouds. Now a dormant volcano with a height of 13,800 feet above sea level, Mauna Kea is Hawaii's tallest mountain, and its summit is entirely available for tourists to walk along the strange sight of snow in Hawaii.

At night, Mauna Kea becomes the perfect stargazing place , which is mainly the reason why it hosts the world's largest astronomical observatory.

  • Starting point: Several pickup points along Waikoloa Road
  • Price: $280 per person

Pipiwai Trail

Much smaller but still beautiful places are only accessible by foot, needing to take short hikes through Hawaii's scenic trails . Also known as the Hana Highway Bamboo Trail , for obvious reasons, the Pipiwai trail differs from every other trail in the state due to going through a forest made entirely out of bamboo.

Along the 4-mile-long trip , visitors can enjoy unique sights, such as passing by Makahiku and Waimoku falls and going through the banyan tree forest .

  • Starting point: Hana Highway
  • Price: $15 entrance fee

Bishop Museum

A great part of Hawaii's beauty comes from its Polynesian culture and rich history, which can be relived at Bishop Museum in Honolulu.

The museum houses the largest collection of Hawaiian and Pacific cultural artifacts and natural specimens in the world. Although it doesn't really have tours included, a visit lets outsiders get a glimpse of how such a marvelous land started. And, for only $3 extra, the J. Watumull Planetarium gives a show that's (quite literally) out of this world.

  • Location: 1525 Bernice Street, Honolulu
  • Price: $27 entry fee for adults, $19 entry fee for children

The museum also offers special prices for senior citizens, members of the military, and island natives.
