Guangzhou is a busy trade center with hundreds of thousands of visitors from all over the world (pre-COVID-19), and it is perhaps China's most multi-national city. Though this makes it more complex to control than other cities in China, in comparison with cities of a similar size in the world, the safety of Guangzhou must be among the top .

China is a country with strict gun controls and penalties for crime, and, now CCTV is everywhere on the streets, crime has decreased even more. Though pickpocketing and theft can still happen occasionally, Guangzhou is a heaven for tourists in terms of general safety.

However, in recent decades, with large numbers of migrants settling and increasing nationalization, Mandarin has become more and more popular in Guangzhou.

English is the "first foreign language" and a required core subject in China's schools and universities, so young people should be able to communicate in simple English.

As Guangzhou is an international metropolis, the accommodation costs are generally higher than in more provincial areas, however visitors can select from a huge range of options : from high-grade star hotels to all kinds of chain hotels, youth hostels, etc.

The high-end hotels include many internationally famous 5-star or even "super-5-star" hotel brands, e.g. The Ritz-Carlton and Four Seasons Hotel. Most of these hotels are located in the most prosperous business districts of Guangzhou: Tianhe and Haizhu. These hotels' management level and service quality maintain a leading position in China.

In recent years, various budget chain hotels have developed rapidly in Guangzhou. Among them, Home Inns, Hanting, Motel, Jinjiang Star, and 7 Days are all well-known hotel brands in China, with moderate rates (standard rooms are usually under 300 yuan). They offer comfortable and safe stays and are widely distributed across Guangzhou's districts.

The best place to stay in Guangzhou depends on who you are and why you're visiting:

  • If you are paying your first visit to Guangzhou: Yuexiu District is attraction packed.
  • If you are traveling with your family: Liwan District is quieter.
  • If you want a metropolis atmosphere: head for Tianhe District, especially Zhujiang New Town.
  • If you are traveling with the one you love: relax on Shamian Island.
  • If you are visiting Guangzhou for the Canton Fair: stay near the site or in Haizhu District.
  • If you only have a one-night layover: stay near Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport

Itinerary Day by Day

Néih hóu! Welcome to Guangzhou , a vibrant city that seamlessly blends modernity with tradition. As you step out of the Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport, our dedicated guide will be there to greet you.

Before we start, our guide will briefly discuss the itinerary with you. Depending on your layover duration, we've tailored two exciting routes for you. But remember, this tour is all about you. Want to tweak the plan? Just let us know. We aim to make the most of your Guangzhou layover and maximize opportunity to discover the city's highlights. Learn the local culture, history, life and sites from your local knowledgeable guide. Afterwards you will be transferred back to Guangzhou airport where the trip concludes.

Recommendation Route: 5-6 Hours Stopover Time

During the layover time, your guide will take you to visit the highlights of Guangzhou. Firstly, you will visit Chen Clan Ancestral Hall(陈家祠) , a representation of the traditional Lingnan architecture and culture. The clan concept in the Lingnan region (which covers Guangdong and Guangxi provinces, and parts of Fujian) is very strong, and people attach great importance to the worship and memorial of their ancestors. The ancestral hall is the place where people worship their ancestors and the carrier of the clan culture. The Chen Clan Ancestral Hal l stands as the largest, best-preserved, and most exquisitely decorated ancestral hall-style architecture in China, earning it the title of the " Jewel of Lingnan Architectural Art ". This majestic hall was collectively financed and constructed by the Chen clans from all 72 counties of Guangdong province and was fully completed in 1894. Spanning an impressive 15,000 square meters, it showcases the grandeur and prominence of Guangdong's predominant surname, Chen. However, the true marvel that has etched the hall's name in the annals of architectural history is its unparalleled decorative artistry. The hall showcases the " Three Carvings " (San Diao) - stone, brick, and wood carvings; the " Two Moldings " (Liang Su) – ceramic and lime sculptures; and additionally, the intricate cast ironwork and exquisite color paintings, together recognized as the " Seven Wonders " (Qi Jue). Each element, be it a wooden panel, a brick wall, or a stone pathway, is embellished with designs and motifs teeming with symbolism and folklore. Additionally, the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall houses the Guangdong Folk Art Museum , where you can witness traditional Guangdong crafts such as ivory carvings, jade sculptures, Guangdong embroidery, and Guangdong colored ceramics, etc.

Afterward, your guide will accompany you to the Zhujiang New Town(珠江新城) , which is Guangzhou's central business district and the symbol of its modern skyline. Home to towering skyscrapers: the sleek Guangzhou IFC Tower and the majestic CTF Finance Center. Looming in the distance is the iconic Canton Tower, an astonishing feat of engineering soaring to 600 meters. Locally, these three titans are affectionately dubbed "广州三件套" or "Guangzhou Three Piece Set."

The heart of the New Central Axis, Huacheng Square (花城广场) , is a sprawling green urban park and public space surrounded by landmarks like the Guangzhou Opera House , designed by the famous architect Zaha Hadid, and the new Guangzhou Library, the Guangdong Provincial Museum . Most importantly, appreciate the slim outline of the iconic Canton Tower (广州塔) on the opposite bank of the Pearl River. The tower boasts a unique, slender, and curvaceous design, inspired by the idea of a twisting female figure. The tower is often referred to as "Xiao Man Yao," which means "young lady with a tight waist" in Chinese.

Lastly, don't miss a stroll along the Pearl River(珠江) , especially during the evening. With the city lights reflecting on the water, and the famous Pearl River Cruise passing by, it's a picturesque scene blending the old and new worlds of Guangzhou.

As our tour concludes, we'll ensure a smooth return to Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport, giving you ample time for your next flight.

Recommendation Route: 7-8 Hours Stopover Time

Then follow in the footsteps of the local “Old Guang” residents, and take a leisurely walking along scenic Lychee Bay (荔枝湾) . Its name was derived from the abundant lychee trees that once lined its banks, bearing sweet fruit each summer. Once the backyard garden of wealthy merchants in Xiguan, the bay is now a serene water town in the heart of the city. As you meander along the bay, you will soak in the surroundings with age-old banyan trees lining its shores and rickety wooden boats gently drifting on its calm waters, bordered by aged buildings and temples. You will also encounter several historical bridges, each with its unique architecture and backstory, and come across the quintessential "Xiguan Big Houses" and other traditional Cantonese architectures, showcasing the opulence of Guangzhou's bygone era.

When in Xiguan, how can one miss the Cantonese dim sum ? You can take a break at one of the many traditional teahouses. Sip on a freshly brewed cup of local tea selections like Tieguanyin (铁观音), Pu'er (普洱), Chrysanthemum (菊花茶), Jasmine (茉莉), etc. As you relish the aroma and flavor of the tea, indulge in genuine dim sum (small dishes) such as red rice sausage (红米肠), shrimp dumplings (虾饺), and barbecue pork buns (叉烧包), Egg Tarts (蛋挞), Phoenix Talons (凤爪), etc. Locals often refer to the morning tea (Yum Cha) custom as "一盅两件", which translates to " one cup, two pieces ". This phrase originates from the longstanding tradition of retired residents who would spend their mornings at teahouses. They would typically order a pot of tea and two baskets of dim sum, leisurely reading a newspaper to pass the time.

After enjoying Guangdong yum cha, your next destination should be the Lychee Bay Grand Theater (荔枝湾大戏台) . This theater serves as a venue for public benefit performances, to promote and preserve traditional Cantonese opera art forms. If your timing is right, you might be fortunate enough to catch a live performance. Nestled alongside Lychee Bay, the theater exudes a unique charm where the melodious chirping of birds harmoniously intertwines with the soulful rhythms of Cantonese opera echoing from the stage. Just a short distance away is the Lychee Bay Museum (荔枝湾博物馆) , which showcases the unique cultural landscapes, folk customs, and historical narratives of Lychee Bay. Within its confines are three major exhibition areas. Notably, the Xiguan Folklore Hall is transformed from a quintessential Xiguan grand mansion . Through authentic household furnishings and scene displays, it partially recreates the traditional archetype of a Xiguan house, offering a close glimpse into the lifestyle, cultural ambiance, and daily scenarios of Xiguan residents of yesteryears.

Afterward, make your way to Yongqing Fang. Yongqing Fang(永庆坊) is located on the historically rich Enning Road (恩宁路) , which boasts the longest and most intact qilou (骑楼) street in Guangzhou. The qilou, a hallmark of Guangzhou architecture, features a continuous covered walkway on the ground level with residential spaces above. This design, combining shopping and sheltered pedestrian access, epitomizes the city's blend of commerce and community. Post-renovation, Yongqing Fang manages to retain the vintage charm of old Guangzhou's Xiguan flavor, all the while infusing modern commercial artistry into its fabric. Strolling down Yongqing Fang, you're immediately embraced by a confluence of the old and the new. Rows of well-preserved, traditional Xiguan-style houses line the street, their facades exuding old-world charm, while their interiors house a myriad of trendy boutiques, art galleries, craft shops, and coffee joints, bringing a touch of contemporary urban chic to the historic surroundings.

Lastly, your guide will accompany you to the Huacheng Square(花城广场) , is a sprawling green urban park and public space surrounded by landmarks like the Guangzhou Opera House , designed by the famous architect Zaha Hadid, and the new Guangzhou Library, the Guangdong Provincial Museum .

More Ideas for Layover Exploration:

If you have more than 8 hours for your layover in Guangzhou, there are several options you can consider. Our suggestion is to visit Beijing Road (1 hour), Yuexiu Park ( 1 hour), Shamian Island (50 minutes), Museum of the Tomb of the Nanyue King (1.5 hours), Dr Sunyat-sen Memorial Hall (40 minutes), Qingping Medicine Market (40 minutes),etc. However, if you would like to customize your trip based on your preferences, interests, and the amount of time available, we can provide some recommendations and help you create a personalized itinerary.

U.S. Department of the Treasury

Remarks by secretary of the treasury janet l. yellen at american chamber of commerce event in guangzhou, the people’s republic of china.

As Prepared for Delivery

Thank you to the American Chamber of Commerce for hosting this event. I’m glad to have this opportunity to speak to American businesses here in Guangzhou at the start of my visit.

This city holds a unique position in Chinese economic history. It was key to Chinese trade for centuries, and in fact to the start of U.S.-China trade, with the first ship from the newly independent United States docking at Guangzhou in 1784. Then Guangzhou was at the heart of the market-oriented reforms and industrial development that drove China’s tremendous growth. And it was a key stop on Deng Xiaoping’s 1992 Southern Tour, when he renewed China’s commitment to these reforms. Today, as all of you know well, Guangzhou remains the top destination for foreign investment in China, including from Fortune Global 500 companies.

It’s a fitting place for me to emphasize the strong economic ties between the United States and China, and the benefits these ties can bring for both the U.S. and Chinese economies. I’d also like to touch on concerns that I’ve heard from American businesses, which I intend to discuss with my Chinese counterparts this week.

A Healthy U.S.-China Economic Relationship

Let me start with the importance of the U.S.-China economic relationship.

One year ago, I laid out our Administration’s approach to China, outlining three key objectives. The United States will pursue a healthy economic relationship with China. We will seek to cooperate with China on global challenges. And we will deploy our economic tools when needed and in a narrowly targeted manner to protect our national security and that of our allies, as well as human rights.

President Biden and I firmly reject the idea that the United States should decouple from China. A full economic separation is neither practical nor desirable, as both the U.S. and China have affirmed in public statements following our high-level bilateral meetings.

Indeed, America’s economic strategy is centered around investing in our economic strength. Over the past three years, our Administration’s policies have helped drive a historic economic recovery and laid the foundation for long-term economic growth. We are also deepening our ties with allies and partners around the world, while continuing to pursue the broad swathe of economic activities between the U.S. and China that can benefit both countries.

Our conviction in the importance of a healthy economic relationship is rooted in an understanding of the roles that the United States and China play in the global economy. Together, the U.S. and China represent 40 percent of global GDP. We have the world’s largest financial systems. Countries around the world watch both of our economies, but also our interactions, as they are crucial to global growth.

The U.S. is China’s largest trading partner, and China is the United States’ third-largest trading partner, following Canada and Mexico. With a large and growing middle class, China represents a huge market for American manufacturers and other firms, including those represented in this room. Exports to China—from transportation equipment to integrated circuits—support over 700,000 American jobs, and Chinese companies employ additional American workers.

Put simply, the U.S.-China bilateral economic relationship is among the most important in the world. Responsibly managing it is essential.

At President Biden’s direction, we’ve taken steps over the last two years that have put the U.S.-China economic relationship on much surer footing. One of my key priorities has been to establish resilient communication channels between the U.S. and China—which I’ve done through engagements with my counterparts at home and in China. We launched and held regular meetings of the Economic and Financial Working Groups, bringing together policy teams from both our countries to discuss key aspects of our relationship, from monitoring economic and financial risks to identifying and pursuing areas of potential cooperation. For areas where we disagree, communication helps prevent misunderstanding from leading to unintended escalation and allows us to frankly convey concerns.

It is in this spirt of continuing to move the U.S.-China relationship in a constructive direction that I’d like to share my concerns about the business environment in China and the ability of American firms to compete on a level playing field.

I’ve heard from many American business executives that operating in China can be challenging. I understand that the Chamber’s recent survey found that one third of American firms in China report experiencing unfair treatment compared to local competitors. We’ve seen the PRC pursue unfair economic practices, including imposing barriers to access for foreign firms and taking coercive actions against American companies. I strongly believe that this doesn’t only hurt these American firms: ending these unfair practices would benefit China by improving the business climate here. I intend to raise these issues in meetings this week.

I know that American businesses are also concerned about the impacts of China’s shift away from a market approach on the U.S. and global economy. I’m especially concerned about overcapacity, which members of the Chamber identified as a concern in the Chamber’s recent survey as well. Overcapacity isn’t a new problem, but it has intensified, and we’re seeing emerging risks in new sectors.

Specifically, direct and indirect government support is currently leading to production capacity that significantly exceeds China’s domestic demand, as well as what the global market can bear. I understand these policies may be driven by domestic development objectives. But overcapacity can lead to large volumes of exports at depressed prices. This can undercut the business of American firms and workers, as well as of firms around the world, including in India and Mexico. And it can lead to overconcentration of supply chains, posing a risk to global economic resilience. This will be a key topic in discussions with counterparts in the coming days.

Overcapacity also poses challenges for Chinese firms and industries and can impact China’s productivity and growth. I believe addressing overcapacity—and more generally considering market-based reforms—is in China’s interest. As I’ve said before, China is too large to export its way to rapid growth.  And if policies are oriented only at generating supply and not also at generating demand, global spillovers will result.

China’s implementation of market reforms generated one of the most significant economic success stories of our lifetimes, lifting hundreds of millions of people from poverty. There’s potential for significant gains from reform now as well.

I see today’s event as an opportunity to deepen my understanding of what’s needed by hearing from you—American businesses—about the successes you’ve had and the challenges you face.

Throughout this week, I intend to communicate our commitment to a healthy U.S.-China economic relationship. I’ll also raise concerns—as part of further stabilizing the relationship and in order to realize greater benefits for the United States, for China, and for the global economy.

The Biden Administration’s efforts over the past year to build a resilient foundation for the U.S.-China economic relationship have made the constructive exchanges I hope to have possible. As I said when I spoke at the U.S.-China Business Council in December, I am convinced that the course we are charting is not just pragmatic. It will lead to building a healthy economic relationship that benefits American firms and workers. And it’s what’s required of the world’s two largest economies if we hope to achieve the best outcomes for our people and for people around the world.

Thank you for being here today, and I look forward to the discussion.
