Traveling to the Maldives – A Month-by-Month Guide to the Best Times to Go

The Maldives is hot and sunny all year, with average temperatures of between 23ºC / 74ºF and 31ºC / 88 ºF, making it an ideal year-round destination for some fun in the sun. There are, however, better times of the year to travel to the Maldives, as some months see higher rainfall and winds than others. The island nation enjoys the best weather between November and April with full days of sunshine, warm air and sea temperatures, and very little rainfall. The monsoon season runs between May and October, peaking around June, with the northern atolls seeing the highest rainfall between May and November, and the southern atolls between November and March.

Dry Season and Wet Season

The dry season in the Maldives typically runs from around mid-December through early May, but these tend to change each year. The Northeast Monsoon season, which is most prevalent in the northern atolls, actually occurs between November and March, but due to being the dry season, it rarely amounts to anything more than a quick downpour or shower,  a couple times a week. The rainy season in the Maldives runs from early May through mid-December, with the Southwest Monsoon season (in the southern atolls) officially being in July and August.

Cloudbursts and Sunshine

Typical of the tropics, when it rains in the Maldives, it pours down heavily for a short time and then clears up just as quickly. Even during the dry season, it is not unusual to have a brief, torrential downpour in the afternoon, followed by a beautifully clear and balmy evening. During the rainy season, it tends to rain more at night, so days are sunny and bright with just a few interspersed clouds and some light rainfall. It’s rare to have more than a few cloudy days per week with sunny days in between.

maldives travel in july

It is relatively humid all year round in the Maldives with a typically muggy tropical feel, which takes a few days to become acclimatized to. The temperature, however, rarely peaks much above the averages, so even the high humidity is never unbearable like it can be in Mediterranean Europe during the hottest summer months.

Being an archipelagic island nation strung through a vast portion of the Indian Ocean, steady winds cross through the Maldives throughout the year, bringing cool breezes to the islands. During the Southern Hemisphere winter, which lasts from March until October, the North-East and South-West monsoons bring off-shore winds that create beautiful, peaking surfing waves for those who are there to surf.

  • The Maldives in March

March in the Maldives sees temperatures rising to an average of 30°C / 88°F which are great for long, lazy days on the beach, sunbathing, snorkeling and swimming. There might be a few possible short bursts of rain, which offer relief from the steaming temperatures, and visibility is excellent for snorkeling and scuba-diving . March is also the beginning of the surfing season in the Maldives, which brings beautiful waves and last until October. During this ‘surfing season,’ the biggest waves are most likely to occur between June and August, caused by storms in the Roaring Forties bringing big swells to the archipelago.

High: 31°C/88°F

Rain: 74 mm/2.9″

  • The Maldives in April

This is another gorgeously hot month in the Maldives with temperatures reaching into the mid-30s / 80s. • The Maldives in May

May is officially the beginning of the wet season with hot, muggy days, average temperatures of 31°C / 88°F, and a high risk of heavy rainfall and storms during the day. Due to the heavy rainfall and higher levels of plankton in the water, visibility for snorkeling and scuba-diving is slightly reduced, but still enjoyable. Be aware that if there are thunderstorms in the area, it’s not a good idea to be in the water, so head down to the beach for some water-based activities. May also sees the start of the holy month of Ramadan (known as Ramazan in the Maldives), bringing some restrictions to local islands.

The Maldives in May: Average Temperatures and Rainfall

High: 31°C/87°F

Rain: 216 mm/8.5″

  • The Maldives in June

While June has a high chance of rainfall and reduced visibility due to the plankton in the water, this is a fantastic time to dive with manta rays and whale sharks that come to feed on the vast amounts of plankton in the water. This month sees many of the resorts offering special deals where visitors can enjoy the plethora of non-beach and water-based amenities that they have to offer. The holy month of Ramadan (Ramazan) continues into June.

The Maldives in June: Average Temperatures and Rainfall

Rain: 173 mm/6.8″

  • The Maldives in July

The Maldives’ weather in July is hot and humid, with short heavy downpours. This is a particularly good time of the year for surfers with the largest waves stemming from the storms in the Roaring Forties bringing big swells to the archipelago. Swell is amazingly consistent during this time of the year, with the average wave measuring two to eight-foot in height. It is also still a great time to dive with manta rays and whale sharks that come to feed on the enormous amounts of plankton in the water. The 26th July is the Maldivian Independence Day and sees parades and public celebrations on most of the resort islands.

Rain: 147 mm/5.8″

The Maldives in September: Average Temperatures and Rainfall

Rain: 244 mm/9.6″

  • The Maldives in October

October is the Maldives’ wettest month, with high humidity and full days of rain. This is the last month of the Maldives’ surfing season, with the South-West monsoons, which occur between May and October, providing outstanding surfing the Northern and Central Atolls. Due to the heavy rainfall and higher levels of plankton in the water, visibility for snorkeling and scuba-diving is slightly reduced, but still, a great time to dive with manta rays and whale sharks.

Weather in the Maldives

Best time to visit for scuba diving, best time to visit to save on flights and accommodations.

  • Month-by-Month Breakdown
  • Frequently Asked Questions

The Maldives is one of the world's most picture-perfect luxury travel destinations. To experience the idyllic tropical scenes you've no doubt admired, the best time to visit the Maldives is in the "dry season" from December to April. Not surprisingly, this is also peak season when rates skyrocket. Therefore, if budget is an issue, traveling at a different time may be preferable. You should plan your visit according to the various things to do in the Maldives . Most people are willing to pay the higher prices for good weather, as outdoor activities are limited when it rains. However, one of the benefits of visiting the Maldives during the wet season are the dramatic sunsets after the rain clears.

The weather in the Maldives is split into two distinct seasons by two monsoons, in which the wind changes to the opposite direction.

  • The dry northeast monsoon from January to March. This is labeled the "dry season" but it doesn't mean it won't rain. The reality is that the weather is more stable and there's less chance of it raining. Short afternoon and evening showers are frequent in the southern atolls. If you really want to avoid the rain, your best bet is February and March in the northern atolls. December and April are considered transitional months between the monsoons.
  • The windy, wet southwest monsoon from mid-May to November. This monsoon is characterized by intense stormy periods that can be brief or last for a few days followed by perfect sunny spells. The weather is unpredictable and the conditions can alter at any minute, although it tends to rain more at night during the wet season. The transitional months from October to early December can be particularly unsettled, with quite a few bursts of rain, before the season transforms completely.

However, it's important to keep in mind that the islands in the Maldives are situated over a considerable distance of more than 800 kilometers (almost 500 miles) from north to south. This means that the weather will vary across the country, and even from island to island in the same area. The southern atolls receive more annual rain than the northern atolls. Yet, rain tends to be less frequent in the southern atolls during the wet season, as they're less exposed to the southwest monsoon. As a result, they're sunnier and not as windy.

What doesn't vary much is the temperature in the Maldives, due to the country's location right on the equator. It stays warm throughout the year, with average temperatures rarely dropping below 77 degrees Fahrenheit (25 degrees Celsius) at night or rising above 88 degrees Fahrenheit (31 degrees Celsius) in the day.

The level of humidity also remains constant, and high, at about 80 percent. The water is warm too, with an average temperature of about 82 degrees F (28 degrees C).

Find out more in our detailed guide to the weather and climate in the Maldives .

There are some extra things to consider if you're planning on scuba diving in the Maldives , which has some of the most remarkable dive sites in the world. In particular, visibility and marine life change according to the season.

Visibility is generally superior in the dry season , and is especially good along the northeastern atolls during that time. February is the pick of the months for diving there. However, the wet season is a better time to see sharks and manta rays, especially on the southwestern side of the Maldives (around South Ari Atoll) from May to October. The manta rays are attracted by the plentiful availability of plankton to feed on.

If you're lucky, you might get to see a whale shark. The Maldives is one of the few places on earth where this is possible. These massive sharks are mostly found on the western side of the Maldives from May to December, and on the eastern side up until April. The protected area off the coast of Maamigili Island in South Ari Atoll has whale shark sightings year-round.

Unfortunately, getting to the Maldives from the U.S. is quite an ordeal as there are no direct flights. Be prepared for travel to take a considerable amount of time (up to 30 hours) and money (from about $1,200 if you fly out of a major international hub such as New York, Boston, or Los Angeles). If you have limited funds, you may want to think about going to the Maldives for a couple of weeks during the cheaper, wet season rather than going for just a week during peak season.

Prices for accommodations in the Maldives generally drop substantially at the start of May, on the fringe of the low season. It's often the case that the weather is still decent then, as the wet season doesn't set in until the second half of May. Plus, if you have your heart set on a certain resort in the Maldives, the low season will make it more affordable.

May and June tend to be the cheapest months, with deals for over-water bungalows at top-rated resorts running up to 50 percent off high season prices. Do compare prices (including flight prices) though, as they rise during summer break.

The most popular islands in the Maldives book up well in advance during the high season. While flash sales and last-minute offers come up throughout the year, these are more common for the commercial mass-market resorts. Of course, this isn't an issue if you're flexible in regards to your accommodations and travel dates. If you can drop everything and book within six weeks of travel, you may be able to score yourself a super deal as resorts (even the top-end ones) constantly adjust their prices to maximize occupancy levels. So, make a note of a handful of resorts you're interested in (here are some really beautiful hotels or take a look at the Maldives Tourism website for inspiration) and monitor them.

The fact that accommodations are spread over many islands in the Maldives means that it never feels too crowded there, even during peak season.

January is a very popular time to visit the Maldives, as people want to escape the winter at home. Prices are especially high over the New Year period. Make sure you book well in advance. The weather stabilizes in January, resulting in mostly calm and clear sunny days. While you can expect about three rainy days during the month in the north, this increases up to 10 days in the south.

Events to check out:

  • Huravee Day is a tribute to Sultan Hussain Izzuddin, who freed the Maldives from brief South Indian occupation in 1752. It features traditional music, food, and dance. The date is based on the Islamic calendar and varies each year, but it's always celebrated on the third day of the sixth month which generally falls in late December or early January.

February is regarded as the driest and least humid month to visit the Maldives. Statistically, the north only experiences a couple of rainy days during the month. The number of rainy days in the south also drops to about five, and these are usually short showers in the southeast part. Prices are high, reflecting the fact that it's peak tourist season.

  • Valentines Day: Many resorts offer special (and costly!) romantic packages for Valentine's Day.

The number of rainy days remains pretty constant in the north but starts to rise to an average of eight in the south. Again, the rain is usually restricted to short bursts that bring relief from the heat, rather than lengthy downpours. The surfing season gets underway in the Maldives in March. Some resorts offer special deals, as peak season winds down later in the month.

The temperature and humidity are slightly higher in April, as the transition from the dry northeast monsoon to the wet southwest monsoon commences. This produces a lot more rain, consisting of afternoon showers that increase in frequency from mid-month. The number of rainy days per month averages about six in the north and 12 in the south. Keep an eye out for additional special deals, as long as you avoid traveling around Easter.

  • Ramadan: The Maldives is an Islamic country and the holy month of Ramadan begins early April in 2022 (the exact date varies each year according to the Islamic calendar). Resort islands aren't affected but restaurants will be closed on local islands, as Muslims fast all day.

Resorts drop their prices in early May. The southwest monsoon usually arrives in the Maldives during the second half of the month. It reaches the southern part of the country first and proceeds north. The second half of May can be particularly wet, with high possibility of storms and whole days of rain. Diving visibility is reduced. Ramadan concludes on Eid in early May 2022, with families gathering to feast.

The southwest monsoon covers the whole country by early June. Expect quite a lot of clouds, morning and evening drizzle, and some torrential downpours. Resorts continue to offer discounted rates to entice guests. If you're planning to visit the Maldives in June, the southern atolls are preferable. The number of rainy days per month jumps to as many as 18 in the north, compared to only 10 or so in the south. Sharks and manta rays are a draw for scuba divers in the south.

The rain continues similar to June but eases off slightly in the north during July, bringing the number of rainy days down to about 15 or 16. The south experiences a couple of extra rainy days throughout the month though, averaging around 12. Rates can be higher in July, as families go on summer vacation. This month is great for surfing, as the storms produce reliable big swells.

  • Independence Day (July 26) marks the day the Maldives gained independence from the British in 1965, after 77 years of protection. Cultural events take place across the country.

August is another popular off-season month for summer vacation in the Maldives, which may result in fewer discounted deals. The number of rainy days continues to reduce slightly in the north, especially towards the end of August. However, it remains constant at about 12 in the south. Downpours are short and heavy.

The weather in the Maldives is quite unpredictable in September. It can rain heavily, or alternatively you may get only an hour of rain some days. There are less tourists, and this is reflected in discounted rates for accommodations. The number of rainy days is about the same in the north and south, averaging around 13 during the month.

  • National Day celebrates the end of 15 years of Portuguese occupation in the Maldives, in 1573. The date is set according to the Islamic calendar and varies each year. In 2022, it falls on Sept. 27. There are patriotic parades and marches throughout the Maldives, especially in the capital city Male.

The wet southwest monsoon begins to withdraw in October, producing unsettled weather. The number of rainy days jumps to an average of 15 in the south, exceeding that in the north. The surfing season draws to a close in October. It's also the final month for good sharks and manta ray sightings in the south. Expect rates at top resorts to rise towards the end of October.

The swap in wind direction, associated with the transition from southwest monsoon to northeast monsoon in November, reduces the number of rainy days in the north to about eight. It remains high, at about 15, in the south though. There are heavy downpours that tend to pass quickly in the afternoons. This is the last month to find a cheap deal (if you're lucky) before peak season really kicks in.

Events to check out :

  • Victory Day (Nov. 3) commemorates the defeat of an attempted coup by a terrorist group from Sri Lanka in 1988. A military march, drills, traditional dances, and processions are held in Male.
  • Republic Day (Nov. 11) marks the day Sultanate rule was replaced with a republic government in 1968. Marching bands and vibrant parades are highlights in Male.

December is the start of the "dry," peak season in the Maldives. You'll still get some rain at the beginning of the month (and it can be heavy at times) before the weather transforms completely. However, it lessens in the north as the month goes on. Many tourists visit the Maldives for the Christmas-New Year period. The resorts hold special buffets and gala dinners for these occasions. In addition to super high prices, it's common for resorts to have minimum stay length requirements.

  • Fishermen’s Day (Dec. 10) honors the country's fishermen, who contribute greatly to the economy. Educational and fun events about traditional fishing are organized. You'll be able to devour delicious seafood too!

If you want good weather, visit during the dry season from December to April. However, prices are at their highest during these months.

The Maldives are expensive year-round, but September is the best time to find deals on flights and hotels. However, it's also the peak of the rainy season and the weather can be unpredictable.

The monsoon season begins mid-May and lasts until November. During these months, rainstorms are frequent and can last a couple of minutes or a couple of days, but the weather during these months is sporadic.

A caveat to the best time to visit the Maldives

When you’re weighing up the best time to visit the Maldives, it’s important to remember that all weather data is based on past conditions, and it’s impossible to predict the future. So while the wet season months of May to November typically see more unsettled weather with higher rainfall, you could have back-to-back days of sunshine. Equally, you could experience grey skies and showers in the dry season – there’s no way to know for sure what will happen.

Bear in mind that the Maldives is a long, thin chain of islands spanning more than 500 miles from north to south. Just as you’d expect different cities to have different weather, the same is true from one atoll to another and even neighbouring islands!

Finally, don’t forget that weather averages usually take account of the whole country and that regional variations, for example, higher rainfall in the southern atolls, may slightly skew the overall picture. Use the weather data as a guide, but don’t rely on it in absolute terms.

And, as always, if you need help planning any aspect of your Maldives holiday, feel free to get in touch .

The Maldives is a destination that has a starring role in many vacationers’ dreams. White sand, crystal clear water, and a remote location make it an exotic playground that many of us have at the top of our bucket lists.

When planning a trip to the Maldives, there are a lot of things to take into consideration, including what resort you’ll stay at, how you’ll get there, how much money you plan on spending, and of course, what time of year you want to visit.

While the Maldives is a year-round destination, there are 2 distinct seasons that offer different benefits and drawbacks. In this guide, we’ll explore the best times to visit the Maldives, both by season and by interest. So, if you’re wondering about the best time to visit the Maldives for snorkeling or the best time to visit the Maldives to save money, we’ve got you covered.

Let’s get to it and start exploring the best (and worst) times to visit the Maldives.

The Maldives is an archipelago made up of over 1,000 islands located in the Indian Ocean southwest of Sri Lanka and India. Since it’s situated just north of the equator, the temperature stays relatively constant throughout the year with high temperatures in the mid-80s and low temperatures in the mid- to high 70s.

Maldives location on a map

Of all the islands in the Maldives, only about 200 are inhabited. These islands are separated into 26 atolls — ring-shaped islands or chains of islands — spread out over 500 miles north to south and 80 miles east to west.

The Maldives is the lowest lying country in the world , with not a single island sitting higher than 6 feet above sea level. The capital, Malé, is only 3.2 square miles and is home to over 250,000 people, making it one of the most densely populated cities in the world.

Hot Tip: Learn about the best ways to fly and stay in the Maldives with points and miles in our detailed guide!

The Best Times To Visit The Maldives by Season

The Maldives is a bit unique because it doesn’t experience 4 seasons like many places around the world. Instead, it has 2 — a dry season and a wet season.

Let’s take a look at the difference between these 2 seasons, as well as the weather in the Maldives each month. Keep in mind that the islands and atolls are spread out over about 500 miles north to south, so the weather can vary throughout the country.

Maldives in rainy season

The wet ( southwest monsoon) season in the Maldives is from May to October . Each island can see up to 9.5 inches of rain in a single month, making it a less popular time to visit for many tourists. However, just because it’s the wet season doesn’t mean there aren’t any sunny days. The weather during this time period is unpredictable and can include a combination of massive rainstorms with multiple sunny days.

The southern atolls see more yearly rainfall overall than the northern atolls, but storms are less frequent there and it’s less windy and sunnier overall.

Palm tree in the Maldives

The dry (northeast monsoon) season in the Maldives is from November to April . This is generally thought of as the best time to visit. While this is considered the dry season, it can still rain during this time period. November and December can actually see quite a bit of rain, mostly in the form of brief afternoon or evening thunderstorms, so keep that in mind when planning your trip to the Maldives. For the best chance of dry weather, plan your vacation for February or March.

Overwater bungalows in the Maldives

The Maldives in January

January is a peak time to visit the Maldives. Temperatures range between 77 and 84 degrees. The days are mostly sunny with an average rainfall of about 2.95 inches. Prices can be high, especially at the beginning of the month around New Year’s Day.

The Maldives in February

February is one of the best months to visit the Maldives. With less than 2 inches of rain, it’s also the driest month of the year . The temperature ranges from 79 to 84 degrees and the warm waters are crystal clear. February is prime time for romantic getaways, so expect high prices, especially around Valentine’s Day.

The Maldives in March

March is also a popular month to visit the Maldives. Temperatures range from 81 to 86 degrees and rainfall is at a minimum. It’s a great time for snorkeling and scuba diving since the waters are still calm and clear during this time. Prices can still be pretty high during March, especially when Easter falls during the month.

Hot Tip: The Maldives lies just north of the equator, so the sun can be intense. If you plan to spend lots of time outside, be sure to protect your skin with a rash guard and lots of sunscreen.

The Maldives in April

April is a transition month in the Maldives. This time between the dry and wet seasons can see unpredictable weather, including frequent afternoon storms, although there are still plenty of sunny days to be had. Water temperatures are at the highest of the year, averaging 86 degrees, so it’s a great time for activities like scuba diving and snorkeling. Air temperatures are also at the highest of the year , ranging from 81 to 88 degrees.

The Maldives in May

May marks the beginning of the wet season in the Maldives. This means there will be fewer crowds and lower prices, but also a higher chance of a lot of rain. Water visibility reduces and sea conditions can become a bit rougher. While that’s not great for scuba diving and snorkeling, it’s perfect for surfing. The temperatures in May drop from their April peak but are still warm with averages between 79 and 86 degrees. May can be quite a wet month, averaging over 8 inches of rain.

The Maldives in June

June can be very rainy in the Maldives which often receives almost 7 inches of rain, leading resorts to offer lower prices . This is great if you’re trying to save money, but set your expectations to include the possibility of some massive storms. While it can be wet anywhere in the country in June, the southern islands and atolls tend to be a little drier than the northern ones. Temperatures range from 79 to 84 degrees.

Paddle board in Maldives

The Maldives in July

While July is a rainy month in the Maldives, prices can increase slightly due to summer vacations. Temperatures remain steady between 79 and 84 degrees. July is a great time for surfing in the Maldives .

The Maldives in August

While still part of the wet season, August is a popular time to visit the Maldives due to school vacations. Temperatures are similar to June and July, ranging from 79 to 84 degrees. Rainfall can be a little less in the north than in the south, with the country seeing about 7.5 inches of rain in August.

The Maldives in September

September is the wettest month in the Maldives and the peak of the low season. Rainfall averages about 9.5 inches and downpours can be heavy. While this can be a good time to visit for surfers or those looking for low rates, it’s not ideal if you want to soak up the sun or float in calm waters outside of your overwater bungalow. Temperatures are still warm though, ranging from 77 to 84 degrees.

The Maldives in October

October is another transition month in the Maldives, with the wet season coming to an end and the dry season emerging toward the end of the month. Rainfall averages between 8.5 inches and 9 inches in October. There’s still great surfing during this month and temperatures remain steady between 77 and 84 degrees. Prices should still be relatively low since the weather can be unpredictable .

The Maldives in November

November is the coolest month in the Maldives , although it’s far from cold with temperatures ranging from 75 to 84 degrees. It’s the end of the surf season and the beginning of the peak season in the Maldives. Average rainfall drops below 8 inches but heavy downpours can still be common. Resort prices start to creep back up this month.

The Maldives in December

December is the beginning of peak travel times in the Maldives, although it’s actually one of the wettest months! December can see over 9 inches of rain, but it tends to happen at the beginning of the month. Temperatures remain balmy, fluctuating between 77 and 84 degrees. The Christmas and New Year holidays at the end of the month are popular times to visit the Maldives and therefore prices can be sky high. Some resorts may even have minimum stay requirements if you’re visiting during the holidays.

Bottom Line: The temperature is fairly consistent year-round in the Maldives, so you’ll want to pay attention to the wet and dry seasons when choosing when to plan your trip. The most popular time to visit the Maldives is during the dry season from November to April. If you’re trying to save some money, aim to visit during the wet season from May to October, but be prepared for some potentially wet days.

The Best Times To Visit The Maldives by Interests

Manta Rays in Maldives

The Maldives is a great location for scuba diving and snorkeling. While these are year-round activities, the water tends to be calmer, making the visibility better, from January through April . However, some wildlife, like manta rays and whale sharks, make more frequent appearances during the wet season.

Water temperatures are nice and warm throughout the year, ranging from about 80 to 86 degrees. The warmest water temperatures in the Maldives occur between March and June.

Hot Tip: Even in warm water like you’ll find in the Maldives, it’s always a good idea to wear a wetsuit if you plan to scuba dive. Make sure to check out our guide to the best snorkels, masks, fins, and snorkel sets if you prefer to travel with your own gear.

Did you know that bioluminescent plankton can make the nighttime sea glow in the Maldives? This phenomenon occurs when these microorganisms emit a blue light underwater. This beautiful display is actually thought to be a defense mechanism. Whatever it is, count yourself lucky if you get to witness it.

While it’s hard to predict when bioluminescence will be visible in the Maldives, your best chances of seeing it are between June and November when the skies are darkest and there is the largest amount of plankton in the sea. The hotspot to see bioluminescence in the Maldives is the “Sea of Stars” on Vaadhoo Island in Raa Atoll.

Surfing in Maldives

The best time for surfing in the Maldives is from February through November . While many tourists want to avoid the wet season from May to October in the Maldives, it’s actually a popular time to visit among surfers since the waves and swells can be bigger during this time.

If you’re lucky enough to be planning your honeymoon in the Maldives, you’ll want to put some thought into when you’ll be visiting. For the best weather, shoot for a trip between January and April. February and March are the months that tend to be the driest. However, if you are trying to save some money, consider visiting during the wet season from May to October. While you may have some rainy days, resort prices will be cheaper. And relaxing in an overwater bungalow with your new spouse during a tropical rainstorm can be a romantic way to spend the afternoon!

Let’s be clear — it’s never really “cheap” to go to the Maldives. However, you can save a little money by visiting during the wet season from May to October.

According to Google Travel, hotels are the most expensive in December and January, so avoid those months if you’re trying to save money. April through October will have the lowest hotel prices of the year .

Another great way to save money on your trip to the Maldives is to use points and miles for your hotel and flights .

The Maldives is a tropical destination at the center of many travelers’ vacation dreams. It’s exotic, remote, and picture-perfect. However, there are things to consider when planning a trip to the Maldives, like the different seasons and the high prices.

The best time to visit the Maldives depends on what you’re looking for and what your budget is. For the best weather, visit during the dry season from November to April. If you want to save some money, aim for the wet season from May to October.

Best Time to Visit the Maldives: Month by Month Breakdown

The Maldives is renowned for its spectacular diving, serene white sand beaches, and paradisiacal island idylls, but knowing the best time to visit Maldives can really affect the experience you’ll have in this unique island nation.

Broadly speaking, the Maldives has two distinct seasons – a wet season and a dry season. The Maldives also has two distinct tourist seasons; peak season coincides with the dry season and low season with the wet season.

Throughout the year, there are other considerations to take into account, such as the manta ray season, the best time for diving, or when you can get the cheapest deals for your honeymoon!

In this article, we take a look at the best time to visit Maldives.

Don’t leave home without: Lonely Planet Maldives (Travel Guide)

Table of Contents

Dry Season in the Maldives

Resort island in the Maldives.

The Maldives has an incredibly tropical climate, which means that while there’s a wet and dry season, temperatures remain fairly constant throughout the year.

Even in ‘winter,’ temperatures average around 30 degrees Celsius.

The dry season is from November to April, and the peak of tourist season will often run from December through to March. Prices are higher in the dry season, and availability is lower, but the weather will be perfect.

If you’re scuba diving, the water is perfectly clear through the dry season.

Find great flight deals to the Maldives: Priceline or Skyscanner

November in the Maldives

Lina Stock of Divergent Travelers Adventure Travel Blog on a luxury liveaboard cruise in the Maldives.

November is the start of dry season, but it can be the best time to visit Maldives if you’re looking for bargains. The peak tourist season has yet to begin, but there’s little chance of rain, and plenty of deals to draw in the travelers!

You might be able to catch the last whale sharks around the Maldives before they start heading elsewhere in search of food. The manta rays are still in town, too.

Diving coral reefs still isn’t great, because the water has yet to clear up, but it’s definitely much better than previous months.

Resorts we love in the Maldives:

  • Milaidhoo Island Maldives
  • AYADA Maldives
  • Baros Maldives

December in the Maldives

Maldives beach island with umbrellas on it only accessible by a liveabord.

In December, you can expect the tourist season to begin in earnest as the countdown to Christmas holidays begins.

While the Maldives is a Muslim nation, a majority of their visitors are often from Western countries, and they make use of their Christmas holidays to visit.

The weather is lovely in December. The rains are over, and there are bright skies and sunshine almost every day of the week. Take some time off, book into a luxury resort, and enjoy the beautiful weather.

Prices are definitely on the high side through December, and you’ll need to book your flights and hotels in advance, as the best resorts can often sell out over the holiday period.

These are our recommended cruise options in for a Maldives trip:

  • Maldives Dhoni Explorer 7 days, Male to Male
  • Maldives Island Hopping 8 days, Hulhumale to Hulhumale

January in the Maldives

Luxury resort in the Maldives.

Prices remain exceptionally high as we enter the New Year; this is not the best time to visit Maldives if you’re looking for a bargain!

Tourist numbers are high, but the Maldives is never a destination that’s packed. Hotels, islands, and resorts all focus on sustainability, so even in peak season, you’ll never feel too overwhelmed.

This can be a great place to spend the New Year if you’re not on a budget and you’re looking for solitude or a romantic getaway with your partner.

Book out a private retreat and see the New Year in as you overlook the spectacular climes of the Indian Ocean from the comfort of an Overwater Bungalow!

February in the Maldives

February can often be the driest month of the year, but you won’t have as high a price to pay for your hotels and flights as you would over December and January!

It’s a wonderful time to be here, with warm weather, clear skies, and zero chance of rain. You can enjoy super-clear diving and snorkeling in the Indian Ocean’s calm waters, and there is plenty of marine life around to keep you enthralled!

March in the Maldives

March can be the best time to visit Maldives too because the weather is excellent. It’s lovely and warm, wonderfully clear, and perfectly dry!

You can lounge on white-sand beaches, snorkel among the coral reefs, or simply relax, unwind, and enjoy the famously good service at luxury resorts across the Maldives.

April in the Maldives

David Stock Jr of the Divergent Travelers Adventure Travel Blog scuba diving in the Maldives.

April is the last month of dry season, and it’s a great time to visit the Maldives. The weather is warm, and the skies are still clear, although you might have the odd rain shower towards the end of April.

Enjoy some excellent diving before the water starts to get murkier when the rains arrive, and explore the best white sand beaches in the Maldives and glorious island living that the islands are so loved for.

The top surf resorts in the Maldives :

  • Hudhuranfushi Surf Resort – Lohis
  • The Perfect Wave Cokes Surf Camp
  • Six Senses – Laamu Atoll

Wet Season in the Maldives

Island beach in the Maldives.

The wet season runs from May through to October. This is the low season when it comes to tourist numbers. The Maldives gets hit by monsoon-like weather throughout the wet season, but actual conditions can vary.

You can risk the rain and get a really fantastic deal on luxury accommodations and cheap flights. It’s worth the risk for the savings, in our opinion, as there’s always plenty of time to relax in your luxury hotel!

While Scuba diving isn’t necessarily good for visibility, the vast amounts of plankton and algae in the water attract some pretty incredible creatures.

The wet season is the best time to visit the Maldives if you’re looking to swim with whale sharks or giant manta rays, as they are here to feed!

The best overwater bungalows in the Maldives are found either at the  Park Hyatt Maldives , or the  Four Seasons Maldives .

May in the Maldives

Beach with umbrellas in the Maldives.

May is the start of the rainy season, but the reality is that you’d be pretty unlucky to get caught in a monsoon deluge straight away!

May is more of a transition month; you can still expect to see lots of sunshine and dry weather, mixed in with the odd thunderstorm and rain shower.

The water definitely starts to get choppier, but experienced divers will still have a great time enjoying the dive sites, as the water is still exceptionally clear.

You can start to pick up a few good deals in May, so it’s an excellent time for anyone looking for a cheaper holiday.

Thinadhoo Island is another top island in the Maldives. Top places to stay on Thinadhoo Island:

  • Plumeria Maldives
  • Casa Barabaru
  • Hudhu Raakani Lodge

June in the Maldives

Remote island beach in the Maldives.

In June, the weather starts to take a turn for the worse, but it’s not all rain and monsoons.

The weather is wonderfully warm, but still not too humid; you will have a few days of sunshine and clear skies if you booked a getaway in June.

It’s a good time for a deal as hotels and resorts try to draw in tourists. Even if it does rain, you can simply enjoy the luxury facilities at your resort.

Relax with a massage, enjoy a few cocktails, or make the most of the wind and choppy seas for some action-packed water sports.

The best adults only resorts in the Maldives:

  • Komandoo Maldives Island Resort
  • Centara Ras Fushi Resort & Spa Maldives

July  in the Maldives

Scuba diving with sharks in the Maldives - A Divergent Travelers must do adventure!

In July, the weather gets worse. This isn’t the best time to visit Maldives if it’s clear skies and sparkling sunshine that you’re looking for.

Expect heavy thunderstorms and lots of rain. Scuba diving is challenging because of the rough seas and lack of visibility, but you will be able to spot whale sharks and manta rays as they start to appear to feed on the ever-growing mass of plankton in the waters.

Prices are reasonable in July, and 26th July is Independence Day; you can participate in nation-wide festivities and cultural events!

The best family-friendly resorts in the Maldives:

  • Constance Moofushi Maldives
  • Amari Havodda Maldives
  • Lily Beach Resort and Spa

August in the Maldives

Heart in the sand around a umbrella on a remote beach in the Maldives.

August sees a bit of a respite from the rain and the monsoon, although the weather can still be quite rough.

As it’s the school holidays in many parts of the world, tourist numbers start to pick up in August, so prices can begin to climb, despite this being the rainy season.

Unless you can only travel in August, though, there’s no real benefit to visiting the Maldives right now. You’re better off waiting for the drier weather or scoring a few bargains in earlier months of the wet season.

The best honeymoon resorts in the Maldives:

  • Baros Maldives
  • Six Senses Laamu
  • Hurawalhi Island Resort

September can be the rainiest month of the year, so it’s not the best time to visit Maldives if you prefer to stay dry!

It can be wet, windy, and monsoony all through the month. Resorts stay open, though, and you can get some great deals. It’s a really good time for surfing in the Maldives, because the waves can be enormous!

If you are just here to relax and unwind, there’s no reason not to visit in September.

Enjoy the facilities at your resort, try some exceptional island-style dining, and enjoy the hot temperatures!

October in the Maldives

Lina Stock of Divergent Travelers Adventure Travel Blog on a luxury liveaboard cruise in the Maldives.

The weather continues to get worse; October can be rainier than September. Don’t expect too many dry days, especially at the start of the month.

If you can, aim to arrive towards the end of the month, when the weather starts to dry up quickly as the dry season approaches.

This might be your last chance to see whale sharks and manta rays, as they tend to disappear at the end of October (at least in large numbers). You can also take advantage of the big waves to enjoy the fledgling surf scene in the Maldives.

For many people, October can be a great time to visit to save money, as prices are often at their lowest.

We spent 7 days sailing, scuba diving, and enjoying some of the best beaches in the Maldives on a liveaboard cruise on the Maldives Dhoni Explore.

From sunset cruises to local island visits and desert-island picnics, there are lots of activities that you can arrange once you’ve arrived at your chosen island.

Diving in the Maldives

These idyllic coral islands rank amongst the best dive destinations in the world. When conditions are good, the underwater visibility is at the highest level – sometimes exceeding 50 metres – and the warm water temperatures year-round make diving in the Maldives a pleasure. The North Malé Atoll is home to the Lion’s Head and Wattaru Kandu dive sites, both of which are frequented by reef sharks. Wattaru Kandu is also home to stingrays and garden eels whilst Lankanfinokhu, or Manta Point as it’s known locally, is a great place to see manta rays being cleaned by local colonies of cleaner fish.

In the South Malé Atoll, Hukrueli is another place to see rays and cleaner fish, and Maaya Thila, a protected marine area, is home to white-tip sharks, turtles, zebra morays and the elusive guitar shark. Hanifaru lagoon in the Baa Atoll is one of the best places to see whale sharks and manta rays – June to September being the best time as this is during the monsoon season and equinox when the lagoon is filled with plankton.

The Scuba Diver course provides pre-entry level certification in three days and on completion you can then upgrade to an Open Water Diver qualification by taking the additional five day course. Our Ten Dives and Six Consecutive Days diving allow qualified divers to make the most of their time in these beautiful islands. Courses are available at Kurumba Maldives, Dhigali Maldives, Velidhu and Meeru.

Best time to visit Maldives

Temperatures in the Maldives stay at a wonderfully warm 25-30°Cyear-round and only drop a few degrees at night. There’s an average of 8 hours of sunshine every day and the water temperature barely falls below 25°C. There are distinct wet (south-west monsoon) and dry (north-east monsoon) seasons; peak season for the Maldives is between December and April when the climate is drier, it’s less windy and the weather is hotter. Most travellers see this as the best time to go, but there are other factors to consider when choosing the time of year to travel here – like when to see specific marine life and when you’ll find the best value offers. Each island in the archipelago has its own microclimate, but there are general patterns that occur throughout the year.

Maldives Weather

Maldives weather by month.

The Maldives in January The Maldives’ weather in January is hot, with low humidity and plenty of sunshine. There may be some rain, but at this time of year it passes very quickly. It’s a great month to visit the Maldives and booking in advance is advised. There’s also great visibility for diving and snorkelling.

The Maldives in February February is an excellent time to travel to the Maldives. It’s the Maldives’ driest month, with less than 70mm of monthly rainfall, average maximum temperatures of 30°C and around 10 hours of sunshine each day. Visibility for diving and snorkelling is excellent.

The Maldives in March In March, temperatures in the Maldives rise to an average maximum of 31°C – great for long days on the beach. Possible short bursts of rain offer relief from the hot temperatures. Visibility for diving and snorkelling is excellent and March also sees the start of the surfing season in the Maldives.

The Maldives in April April is another wonderfully hot month in the Maldives. This is the end of the Maldives’ official dry season and there are often showers mid-month. It’s also a little more humid. Water visibility for diving and snorkelling is still very good.

The Maldives in May May is hot, with average maximum temperatures of 31°C, but is the start of the Maldives’ official wet season and comes with risks of storms and possible whole days of rain. Diving visibility is slightly reduced due to the plankton in the water.

The Maldives in June June is another month in the Maldives with a high chance of rainfall. It’s a good time to take advantage of the best value offers if you’re willing to spend as much time enjoying your resort’s facilities as on the beach. Diving visibility is slightly reduced due to the plankton in the water, however there’s a huge advantage for divers as manta rays and whale sharks come to feed on the plankton.

The Maldives in July The Maldives’ weather in July is hot and humid, with short heavy downpours. This is another time to check for great value offers and is particularly good for surfers. Water visibility for diving is slightly reduced due to the plankton in the water, but the big draw underwater is the presence of manta rays and whale sharks. 26July is Independence Day and you may see small parades and public celebrations on resort islands.

The Maldives in August August in the Maldives is hot and humid, with an average 7 hours of sunshine each day and short heavy downpours. Diving visibility is slightly reduced due to the plankton in the water, but enticing offers mean this is still a popular time to visit.

The Maldives in September September is one of the Maldives’ wettest months. It sees average maximum temperatures of 30°C, and there’s still an average 7 hours of sunshine each day. Diving visibility is slightly reduced due to the plankton in the water, but there are great opportunities to spot whale sharks and manta rays feeding on the plankton.

The Maldives in October October is the Maldives’ wettest month, with high humidity and with possible whole days of rain. It’s a good time to take advantage of the best value offers if you’re willing to spend as much time enjoying your resort’s facilities as on the beach. October is the last month of the Maldives’ surfing season and the last month of the year for good sightings of whale sharks and manta rays.

The Maldives in November In November, temperatures in the Maldives are an average maximum of 30°C. The official wet season is finishing and although there are showers, the rain passes quickly.

The Maldives in December The climate for the Maldives in December is largely hot and dry, though mid-month showers are likely. It’s an excellent choice for some winter sun. Christmas and New Year are particularly popular and may include minimum stays.

A note on Ramadam The exact date of the holy month of Ramadan (known as Ramazan in the Maldives) changes each year. Guests visiting Maldives’ resorts during the holy month are unlikely to notice anything different to any other month – meals and alcohol are served as usual. If you’re visiting a local island, there will be some restrictions that you’ll understandably be asked to respect.

FAQs of Maldives in July

July can be a great time to visit the Maldives for a honeymoon. While it is technically considered the rainy season, there is still plenty of sunshine and warm temperatures. The water is also crystal clear for snorkelling and diving. Plus, with fewer visitors during this time, it may be easier to find a secluded spot on the beach or a private villa. How to choose the best Maldives island for your travel style

Mar 4, 2024 • 7 min read

Maldives, Island on sunny day

There are thousands of sun-drenched islands in the Maldives, and finding the right one is all part of the fun ©seanscott/Getty Images

Let’s get one thing straight: Not all atolls were created equal. But on the plus side, the  Maldives  has thousands of sun-drenched islands, and discovering the perfect one for your trip is all part of the fun.

Every resort in Maldives is its own private island but choosing the right one for you can be difficult. Want to kick off your Indian Ocean holiday in style? Our guide will help you know what to look for in the hunt for your ideal island, whether you’re searching for affordable options or five-star resorts with brilliant dive schools.

Standup paddleboarder in the turquoise waters off the shore of the Patina Maldives resort

The distance dilemma

Yes, your sun-kissed island resort might be wonderfully secluded with no other atoll in sight, but remote locations inevitably crank up the price – not simply because there are higher costs to cover (like getting supplies to the resort in question) but because it’s likely you’ll need to pay for a short domestic flight or a seaplane flight to get there. Seaplane transfers are the most expensive option (expect to pay anywhere from US$300 to US$900 for a round trip), while domestic flights to one of the Maldives’ smaller airports (followed by a boat transfer) will be slightly cheaper.

The good news? Some of the best Maldives resorts are just a boat ride from Male’s Velana International Airport, so don’t write off properties simply because of their close proximity.

We recommend: Patina Maldives, the Fari Islands

Located on the Fari Islands development, Patina Maldives, the Fari Islands is only a 45-minute speedboat transfer from the international airport. Fancy a spot of island-hopping? Traveling between islands in the Maldives can be expensive, but Patina Maldives is just a short shuttle-boat service from the Fari Islands’ Ritz-Carlton resort, so there’s no chance of claustrophobia setting in. The Capella Maldives , which will be the third and final Fari Islands resort, is due to open in 2025.

Where to stay for the best food

It may sound self-indulgent, but trust us – knowing your culinary criteria can make or break a holiday. That tiny, exclusive island you’ve got your eye on might well have a Michelin-starred chef, but even the most delicious dishes can look rather plain after you’ve eaten your way through the restaurant’s menu in the space of two days. In summary, bigger is often better if food is a priority. Our top tip? Don’t miss Maldivian Night – most resorts will offer these culinary extravaganzas, typically held in the main buffet restaurant. Chefs will go all out to champion local cuisine, and they’re great opportunities to try local seafood like the Maldivian snapper.

We recommend: Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi

You’ll never go hungry at the South Male Atoll’s Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi resort, which has a staggering 11 restaurants, including ones specializing in Levantine and garden-to-table cuisine. There are regular food-themed events, too – our favorites include Arabian Night and the Twilight Seafood Barbecue, held on the beach.

Where to go for downtime

Why are you going on holiday to the Maldives? If you’re dreaming of lazy sunbathing sessions on the country’s best beaches, your priorities will be different than those of the adrenaline-fueled traveler keen to try every high-octane activity available, whether it’s swimming with manta rays or skydiving (as of 2023, the Maldives now has a skydiving school, which you’ll find on Ifuru Island ). As a rule, smaller resorts are great for crowd-free downtime, while larger ones are best suited to families and active types.

We recommend: Coco Palm Dhuni Kolhu

For the best of both worlds, consider Coco Palm Dhuni Kolhu  on Baa Atoll – regarded as one of the best spots in the Maldives . There’s a wide range of activities and experiences on offer, but where you can also escape your fellow vacationers by signing up for a night on a nearby deserted island.

A couple on a dock watching a colorful sunset at Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Kuda Huraa

Money talks

It’s a myth that you have to be a millionaire to holiday in the Maldives, although without a little research, costs can easily spiral out of control. Travelers keen to make the most of their hard-earned cash should familiarize themselves with the packages on offer to make sure they’re getting the best value for money. Options can range from bed-and-breakfast-only packages to to ones that include all meals and drinks, along with certain activities.

We recommend: Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Kuda Huraa

A private island in North Male Atoll considered one of the best spots in the Maldives for honeymoons, the Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Kuda Huraa  has a huge range of room categories and offers a brilliant selection of packages, including Island Romance packages that feature fantastic extras designed with couples in mind. Planning on tying the knot? You can get married here, too.

And if you have more questions about budget-planning for a Maldives adventure, take a look at our top 8 ways to save money in the Maldives .

What to look for in sustainability

Taking a second to consider your destination’s sustainability credentials won’t just benefit Mother Nature, it could also save you serious amounts of cash. If an island is producing its own drinking water, growing its own vegetables and transporting guests by boat rather than gas-guzzling seaplane, there will be lower outgoings, which means less costs to cover – all of which translates into lower room rates.

We recommend: Fairmont Maldives - Sirru Fen Fushi

There are numerous reasons to visit the Shaviyani Atoll’s Fairmont Maldives - Sirru Fen Fushi resort, including the fact that it’s tucked inside one of the Maldives’ largest lagoons. But it’s also a great place to learn about sustainability, whether it’s at the Sustainability Lab, where guests can turn discarded plastic bottles into jewelry (waste plastic has also been transformed into various pieces of furniture you’ll see throughout the resort) or during excursions with marine biologists from the Olive Ridley Project , a charity created to protect sea turtles that has a partnership with the property. There’s also the fantastic Coralarium, a semi-submerged structure just off the beach designed by British sculptor Jason de Caires Taylor, who specializes in underwater installations. It doubles as a coral propagation project, and guests can snorkel inside it to admire the tropical fish and brightly-colored corals.

Where to get a culture fix

A growing number of resorts are honoring the region by offering experiences that provide a deeper insight into the Maldives and prove that there are endless reasons to venture beyond your villa. Many now offer trips to local community islands, for example, and in recent years several have opened small museums. At Cora Cora resort’s Dutch Onion Museum (named after the onion-shaped vessels found on the island, several of which are on display), visitors can check out over 400 ancient artifacts found on nearby islands.

We recommend: Heritance Aarah

Heritance Aarah , a beautiful resort on the stunning Raa Atoll, recently unveiled its Live Maldivian Village Museum, which focuses on 4,000 years of Maldivian history. Guests can sample local delicacies at a traditional open kitchen, learn about the art of coral stone carving and find out why locals are known as some of the world’s best boat builders.

Snorkelers filming and swimming near a manta ray in Hanifaru Bay, Maldives

Timing is everything

Let’s get one thing straight: there’s no such thing as a bad time to visit the Maldives . But considering the season is important if you’ve got your heart set on certain activities. If you’re planning on swimming with mantas, for example, a stay on a Baa Atoll resort between May and November is your best bet, although July to October is a great time for manta sightings elsewhere. If you’re planning on a surf session, you’ll need to visit between April and October.

We recommend: frequent holidays

To ensure you experience the Maldives’ best bits, schedule a holiday every month without fail. We’re joking, but you get the point: think what you want to see and do, and brush up on the different areas’ seasonal selling points.

This is the perfect weather for a relaxing day out on the beach, or perhaps a day of snorkeling. When packing for a trip to the Maldives in July, it’s important to remember to bring sun protection, such as sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses.

Additionally, beach safety is always important, so be sure to bring plenty of water and snacks to remain hydrated and energized throughout the day. Considering the warm temperatures and the sunny days, July is an ideal time to visit the Maldives.

There are plenty of activities to enjoy and sites to explore, and the weather is perfect for a fun-filled holiday.

Humidity Levels

With balmy temperatures, the humidity levels in July can be stifling. The high levels of humidity make it difficult to be outside for any extended period of time, which can put a damper on outdoor activities in the Maldives.

Luckily, there are several steps that can be taken to remain comfortable in the heat and humidity. Utilizing sun protection, such as a wide-brimmed hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses, is essential for anyone spending time in the sun.

Wearing the right clothing can also make a big difference. Lightweight fabrics are best for staying cool, and selecting beachwear with breathable materials is also important.

Lastly, keeping hydrated is vital for keeping cool and avoiding dehydration. Visitors to the Maldives in July should be mindful of the humidity levels and take steps to remain comfortable.

By utilizing sun protection, wearing the right clothing, and keeping hydrated, travelers can enjoy their trip and make the most of their beach getaways.

You’ll want to be prepared for rain if you’re visiting the area in July, so don’t forget to bring an umbrella and a rain jacket! The Maldives is known for its beautiful, year-round warm weather, but that doesn’t mean it’s immune to rain.

The monsoons bring heavy rains to the area from May to October, so if you’re planning to visit in July, you should expect to see some rain during your stay. The amount of rainfall will depend on the season in which you visit. During the southwest monsoon season, which runs from May to October, rainfall can be quite heavy.

In July, you can expect to see an average of 250mm of rain, spread out over an average of 18 days. This is slightly higher than the amount of rain during the northeast monsoon season , which usually runs from November to April. The rain won’t stop you from enjoying the beaches and other activities that make the Maldives a popular ecotourism destination.

However, you can expect to see more rain in July than in other months, so it’s important to be prepared. Make sure to bring a raincoat and umbrella if you’re planning a trip to the Maldives in July.

Sea Breezes

Feel the refreshing sea breezes caress your face as you explore the tropical paradise of the Maldives in July.

While the temperatures in the Maldives remain consistent year-round, the sea breezes can be a welcome respite from the heat of the day. Whether you’re taking a snorkeling trip to one of the many pristine snorkeling spots or spending the day lounging on the beach, the sea breezes will keep you cool and comfortable.

The sea breezes of the Maldives in July are often caused by the monsoon season that runs from May to October. During the summer months, the wind direction is generally from the east and northeast, bringing moist air from the Indian Ocean. These winds are generally light and pleasant, with average wind speeds between 8 and 12 mph. The sea breezes are especially welcomed during the hottest part of the day, as they can reduce the temperature by several degrees.

Given the typically balmy and humid climate of the Maldives, the sea breezes are a welcome relief. They can add a cooling effect and can make the days more pleasant and comfortable. Furthermore, the cooler temperatures can make it more enjoyable to explore the stunning beaches and coral reefs of the Maldives in July.

Weather in the Resorts

Enjoy the perfect climate of the resorts in the Maldives no matter the time of year! In July, the average temperature in the resorts is 27°C (80°F), with temperatures ranging from 24°C (75°F) to 29°C (84°F). The humidity levels are quite low, creating a pleasant, comfortable atmosphere.

Muizzu’s balancing act in the Maldives

Muizzu’s balancing act in the Maldives

Smruti S Pattanaik

The Maldives held its much-awaited parliamentary election on April 17. Not surprisingly, the People’s National Congress (PNC), along with its coalition parties, won 75 seats in total while the Maldives Democratic Party (MDP), the erstwhile ruling party’s strength in the Parliament, dwindled to only 12 seats from 65 seats previously held. The PNC alone won 66 seats, showing that the other parties in the coalition would play a marginal role.

This ‘supermajority’, as described by Maldivian media, will strengthen President Muizzu’s hand in charting policies without being obstructed by the opposition in Parliament. Meanwhile, his alliance partner, the People's National Front (PNF) president and former president of the Maldives, Abdullah Yameen, was freed from jail just two days before this election. Muizzu's victory would have several geopolitical implications as he charts his ultranationalist foreign policy.

Fallout with former ally

Muizzu’s fallout with Abdullah Yameen may not threaten his political sustenance; rather, the divided opposition is not in a position to pose much challenge to his policies. Though Muizzu was the contingency presidential candidate in case Yameen failed to contest due to his conviction, the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM)-PNC coalition’s senate rallied behind Muizzu’s candidacy and rejected Yameen’s proposal to boycott the election. Since he was elected president, Muizzu has tried to sideline Yameen and has appointed a cabinet without consulting him, which deepened the rift between the two. Yameen’s loyalists accuse Muizzu of refusing to take phone calls from Yameen after his election.

After Muizzu was elected President, Yameen was transferred from the jail where he spent his days after being convicted of corruption charges to house arrest. However, his newly created party PNF, Democrats and Adhaalath Party (AP), could not win any seats in the parliamentary election. This is a serious blow to Yameen’s political aspirations.

Economic downturn

The debt situation has worsened in the country even though it has not reached the stage of bankruptcy. Muizzu has asked for development funds from China to anchor a pro-China foreign policy while requesting India to restructure debt repayment and stagger it to help the Maldives to repay commensurating with its economic ability and at the same time to continue with projects that have already been sanctioned by the government. Muizzu also wants to bolster the free trade agreement with China without assessing the impact on its economy in its bid to reaffirm the previous policy charted by former President Abdullah Yameen. This clearly shows that Muizzu would have to balance the country’s economic situation while looking for more loans to develop infrastructure projects essential for its economic growth.

China’s share of the Maldives’ debt is 37 percent. The International Monetary Fund has categorised the Maldives as a high-risk debt-distressed country. The World Bank has predicted 5.4 percent growth from 2024 to 2025. The country's debt vulnerability is pegged at 115 percent of the GDP , and its external and internal borrowing would make it financially vulnerable .

The Maldives imports essential commodities from India. Both countries are discussing introducing trade in local currency to address the dollar shortage. In July 2023, the Reserve Bank of India permitted the Maldives to open Special Rupee Vostro Accounts (SRVAs) to facilitate trade in local currencies . In April of this year, India’s Directorate General of Foreign Trade also removed the export curbs on onion, rice, sugar, wheat flour and stone aggregate for the country .

Like other South Asian countries, the Maldives’ tax revenue is very low. It depends on imports to sustain. According to the Asian Development Bank’s report, the outgoing Solih government's decision to increase the Goods and Services Tax rate by 40.0 percent for the general sector and 33.3 percent for the tourism sector has increased the price of essential commodities . Foreign exchange reserves have slumped. Subsidies have increased to provide economic relief.

Tourism booms

The tourism industry has grown significantly even though Indian tourist arrivals have declined. According to reports, Indians travel to the Maldives during the summer, which is a fill-up to the off-season tourism, as most Western tourists prefer to travel in winter . Indian tourists were the largest in 2023. The government has set the goal of achieving over 2 million tourist arrivals and 14.3 million bed nights for 2024 to generate revenue. This also requires huge investments and facilities to accommodate tourists and boost the local economy. In this context, reducing the number of Indian tourists arriving in the Maldives would be a major concern for the Maldivian government. Some estimate the loss to the Maldivian economy to be around $2.5-5.5 million after India dropped to fifth place in the Maldivian tourism chart.

In recent years, the Maldives has seen growth in the tourism sector, which is likely to generate revenue for the cash-strapped economy, boost GDP growth and create employment opportunities for the locals.

Geopolitical balancing

In the past few months after his election, Muizzu has also successfully replaced Indian military trainers with civilian trainers, which he can boast of as his foreign policy success. He has also managed to elevate the Maldives’ relations with China to a strategic level by signing the China-Maldives Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership (2024-28 ). They signed 20 agreements, some focusing on the defense sector. The political ecosystem would be conducive to Chinese investment as Beijing aspires to have a foothold in the Western Indian Ocean.

Several powers have hotly contested for influence in the Indian Ocean countries. However, this contest is seen as a binary in the Maldives—India vs China. Muizzu’s task will be to balance the interests of both countries and extract benefits for the Maldives. Given the economic situation of India and China and their investment in the Maldives, it would be difficult for Muizzu to play one against the other. Given the Maldives’ proclivity to play the China card as it did when Muizzu allowed the docking of Chinese Xiang Yang Hong 03 ‘research vessel’ ostensibly for replenishment, India has decided to build its own Naval base in Lakshadweep. Cooperation between India and the Maldives continues, as the trilateral India-Maldives-Sri Lanka trilateral Dosti-16 exercise took place in February.
