Recap/Review: ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Pulls It All Together For “Life, Itself”

It was awesome! Love that this season is a kinda sequel to TNGs The Chase. So many great Easter eggs. Loved the Soong type android… and the Roman ship… and did anyone else notice the tribble in the hall of Disco? Such fun.

You’re spoiling a lot here. Please don’t be this specific.

You can watch it for free, so spoilers are fine. If you are worried about them, why are you here? I’m here to hear a discussion on the episode.

The season preview shown at the end of the first episode had a quick shot of what looked like a constitution class starship. I’m actually excited to see how this season plays out.

Legacy ships.

Silly me for giving Discovery credit for being the only show not to rely on nostalgia-bait.

Any excuse to trot out the same tired complaint, huh?

When Trek stops troting out the same, tired nostalgia-bait, I’ll stop complaining. I wouldn’t get your hopes up.

For the love of God what exactly is wrong with building off previous canon from within a franchise? It’s not that they are playing off general interest nostalgia like pogo sticks and oldies music. And you know what? I love nostalga? Life is to short and painful at times. Let us be serviced

In 50 years people will look back at all of Star Trek as Nostalgic. So does it really matter in the long run?

You’re absolutely right.

PUSH THE FRANCHISE *FORWARD* AND BUILD NEW CANON AND LORE THAT PEOPLE IN 50 YEARS WILL BE NOSTALGIC ABOUT.

You have GOT to stop gatekeeping the right way to handle references in this franchise and dictating an end to pulling anything from previous canon.

I keep telling you this is not a normal franchise – it has 58 years of stories it can interconnect with and reference and build from. That’s a rare privilege for the writers and the fans, long term or no. There is no precedent for our situation beyond Doctor Who and Star Wars, really, and I’d say by telling stories that span 1000 years of continuity, Star Trek has done better than Star Wars which until Dawn of the Jedi has been hyper focused on a small sliver of time and space.

OMG did you see what register number that was??? #nospoilers

Calm down. It was in a preview for the season, and it was a blink and you’ll miss it shot.

I saw that too. And it reminds me that (I can talk about spoilers of this ep now right?)

The Progenitors or the idea of them did not originate on TNG’s the Chase. They were a theory of Spock as to why so many species across the galaxy are humanoid and that an ancient race must have populated several worlds across the Galaxy.

Why is the old guy in the ep keep referring to the Projenitors of a 1000’s of year old secret? The very notion that they are responsible for humanity makes them millions if not billions years old.

I took that as it’s the secret of their existence that a thousand years old- not the race themselves.

Ahhh gotcha.

Has anyone ever noticed that The female Progenitor not only looks like a changeling but is also played by Salome Jens? HMMMM…..

I’ve always noticed that… and always hoped that it was just a coincidence. “The Chase” was strong enough on its own without Changeling conspiracy theories throw in.

Plus, the Changelings only adopted their “solid faces” to mimic Odo’s poor shifting abilities and make him feel more comfortable with his own people.

Here's our Star Trek streaming guide, so you know where to go boldly where you've never gone before... Without leaving your sofa. We've come up with this Star Trek streaming guide because since the first ever episode aired back in 1966, there's been  a huge number of additions into the franchise.

Star Trek is currently in a bit of a purple patch for content as Paramount Plus , which is the home of all things Star Trek, is responsible for several new shows in recent years. But, it's not just new content, you'll also find where to stream the classics both movies and TV series below.

Before, Star Trek content was scattered all around different streaming services and searching for what you wanted to watch could feel like hunting for a cloaked Bird of Prey. However, these days you're able to stream all Star Trek content out there on Paramount Plus. However, we do have round-ups of the best sci-fi movies and TV shows on Netflix , Disney Plus and Amazon if you want to check them out.

You can also check out our take on the Star Trek movies, ranked so you know which movies to beam up onto your device. While Paramount Plus has everything Star Trek out there, you can find the odd bit of content on other platforms. So, below you'll find where you can watch what, regardless of where you're based, in our Star Trek streaming guide.

Walter Koenig, Leonard Nimoy, William Shatner, James Doohan, DeForest Kelley, George Takei, and Nichelle Nichols in Star Trek IV The Voyage Home (1986)_Paramount Pictures

The Star Trek movies can be divided into three tidy groups: the original cast, the Next Generation cast, and the reboot cast. All of them can be found on Paramount+. However, Paramount+ isn't the only place you can stream the movies and in some cases you can rent or buy from places such as Amazon .

Here’s how to stream the Star Trek movies in the U.S., in order of release:

Star Trek: The Motion Picture — Paramount+ Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan — Paramount+ Star Trek III: The Search for Spock — Paramount+ Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home — Paramount+ Star Trek V: The Final Frontier — Paramount+ Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country — Paramount+ Star Trek: Generations — Paramount+ Star Trek: First Contact — Paramount+ Star Trek: Insurrection — Paramount+ , Spectrum Star Trek: Nemesis — Paramount+   Star Trek (2009) — Paramount+ , Pluto TV Star Trek Into Darkness — Paramount+ , Pluto TV Star Trek Beyond — Paramount+ , DIRECTV , Freevee

When it comes to Star Trek on the small screen, you can find them all in one place. Paramount+ not only has every episode of every legacy Trek show, it’s also the home of all the new Star Trek programming, such as Picard and Strange New Worlds. If you’re a Trekkie, you absolutely want to have Paramount+ to keep up with the object of your affection. A word of warning though, other streaming platforms may only have select episodes or series to stream.

Star Trek: The Original Series — Paramount+ , Pluto TV Star Trek: The Next Generation — Paramount+ , Pluto TV Star Trek: Deep Space Nine  — Paramount+ , Sling , Spectrum Star Trek: Voyager — Paramount+ , Pluto TV Star Trek: Enterprise — Paramount+ Star Trek: Discovery — Paramount+ , DIRECTV Star Trek: Picard — Paramount+ Star Trek: Short Treks — Paramount+ Star Trek: Lower Decks — Paramount+ Star Trek: Prodigy — Paramount+ ,   DIRECTV , FuboTV , Spectrum Star Trek: The Animated Series — Paramount+ Star Trek: Strange New Worlds — Paramount+

Now that Paramount+ has arrived in the U.K, streaming Star Trek is a lot easier. You can view most of the movies on the streaming platform. Star Trek Beyond is the exception but that can be found on Amazon Prime. If you're not prepared to subscribe to Paramount+, the movies are available to rent or buy from a number of different platforms.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture — Paramount+ Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan — Paramount+ Star Trek III: The Search for Spock — Paramount+ Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home — Paramount+ Star Trek V: The Final Frontier — Paramount+ Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country — Paramount+ Star Trek: Generations — Paramount+ Star Trek: First Contact — Paramount+ Star Trek: Insurrection — Paramount+ Star Trek: Nemesis — Paramount+ Star Trek (2009) — Paramount+ , Amazon Prime Star Trek Into Darkness — Paramount+ , Amazon Prime Star Trek Beyond — Amazon Prime

Star Trek: The Next Generation - Picard, Ryker, and Troi

Now that Paramount+ has reached those across the pond, the U.K. can enjoy streaming Star Trek shows as well. Netflix is also another great option to fulfil your Trekkie viewing needs, especially if you're interested in checking out Star Trek: The Animated Series, which is exclusive to Netflix.

However, for the likes of Picard and Lower Decks, you’ll have to hop on over to Amazon Prime. It's worth noting that platforms such as SkyGo may only have a select number of episodes or series to stream.

For quite a long time, Star Trek fans were left in the dark, drifting through the cold vacuum of television with not a single new Star Trek show in sight. After three fantastic movies, Trek finally returned to the small screen in 2017 with Star Trek: Discovery .

Well, sort of. Star Trek: Discovery hit the CBS streaming service, so only serious Trekkies got to delight to the adventures of Michael Burnam and Captain Lorca on the Federation starship Discovery. Set a decade before the start of the original series, Discovery reminds sci-fi fans of the potential of the genre. And the show will finally be available on CBS starting in late September.

Here’s everything you need to know to stream Star Trek: Discovery.

Star Trek: Discovery Reviews

  • Rotten Tomatoes score : 81%
  • Metacritic score : 72

What the critics are saying:

  • “It’s even more beautiful watching two women of color, black and Asian, navigate a realm that traditionally hasn’t included them. It honors sci-fi’s history while giving it a bold new future to stake claim in, making Star Trek essential television for the first time in decades.” – Ira Madison III, Daily Beast
  • “You respect the ambition of unspooling this story gradually, but the third episode also retroactively makes the two-part prologue feel even more overextended. This feels like a show struggling to find its heart. But at least Martin-Green gives it a pulse.” – Darren Franich, Entertainment Weekly

How to stream Star Trek: Discovery

CBS is available on a few of the major live TV streaming services. When trying to decide which one is best for you, you’ll want to weigh the cost, the other channels you’ll receive, and the compatible devices for streaming. At the moment, only season one will be available on CBS. New seasons are still exclusive to CBS All Access.

Star Trek: Discovery on Hulu with Live TV

Hulu Live TV is a great way to stream live TV, as it comes with access to Hulu ’s massive library of on-demand content. You’ll be able to choose from movies , shows , and Hulu’s original programming , and keep up with what’s new each month. Hulu plans even include a bundle option where you can access Disney+ and ESPN+ along with Hulu.

Hulu Live TV sets you up with local channels and has a broad spectrum of entertainment and sports channels to review, including the full suite of ESPN channels, Cartoon Network , FX , HGTV, and even deep cuts like National Geographic and Syfy , and of course, CBS, where you can stream Star Trek: Discovery.

Hulu Live TV Logo

Star Trek: Discovery on FuboTV

FuboTV started as a streaming service geared toward sports fans, but it’s evolved into a broadly-appealing option with entertainment and news options alongside its robust sports choices. Depending on the package, you can access as many as 180+ FuboTV channels . If you’re looking to be entertained, Bravo , IFC , MTV , and VH1 are options even at Fubo’s most basic tier . The Fubo channel list still includes plenty of sports, including the Fubo Sports Network, which has original programming mixing sports and humor. The FuboTV cost starts at $54.99 a month, and with Disney Media favorites like ABC , ESPN , and the Disney Channel now on board, some who were on the fence about Fubo are giving it another look.

To watch Star Trek: Discovery , you’ll want to dock in at the FuboTV Standard level.

In Body Image

Star Trek: Discovery on Sling TV

For a more à la carte service, look to Sling TV. It offers two cable packages, Sling Orange and Sling Blue , both of which cost $30 per month. If you grab them both ( Sling Orange + Blue ) you can save $10 per month. Sling Blue offers more bang for your buck with over 40 channels, including sports necessities like FS1 , NBCSN , and NFL Network . You’ll also gain access to the usual cable mainstays like Food Network , Discovery , Cartoon Network , SYFY , and FXX . Here’s the complete guide to Sling TV channels .

Sling TV

How to use AirTV with Sling

CBS is not available on any Sling TV package. However, there is an easy workaround. By purchasing a basic AirTV for $79.99 or the AirTV Player for $119.99, you can gain access to local channels in your Sling TV package. As the Daily Dot wrote in its AirTV review , “It’s practically magic.”

The basic AirTV is a dual-tuner streaming device, while the AirTV Player is basically an upgraded Chromecast that has Netflix preinstalled. You’ll still need to own an HD antenna because even though AirTV gets you access to your local channels, it doesn’t actually physically show them to you.

But AirTV—which has no monthly fee—serves to strengthen one of Sling’s biggest weaknesses compared to other live streaming services. It’s the only way to watch Star Trek: Discovery using Sling TV.

Star Trek: Discovery on AT&T TV Now

If you’re already looking to AT&T for your wireless needs, you might consider AT&T TV Now to cover streaming for you. AT&T TV Now channels start with Plus and Max, which even include HBO. Then, AT&T plans expand from there, approaching cable selection and pricing with AT&T TV Now’s biggest packages. AT&T streaming also comes with Cloud DVR , letting you record up to 20 hours of TV per month. If you’re looking for CBS , get in at the AT&T TV Now Plus tier to stream it.

DirecTV Stream logo

Star Trek: Discovery on Paramount+

New episodes of Star Trek: Discovery are only available on Paramount Plus. Season 3 premiers Thursday, October 15, at 9pm and will be available exclusively on the CBS streaming platform.

“ Star Trek: Discovery ” is back for a fifth and final season, with a two-episode season premiere on Thursday, April 4 (4/4/2024) to kick off a 10-episode season that will bring the U.S.S. Discovery and Captain Michael Burnham’s franchise-reigniting story to a close.

New episodes of “Star Trek: Discovery” release every Thursday on Paramount+ (free trial) , with the first two episodes, “Red Directive” and “Under The Twin Moons,” dropping this week.

STREAM: “Star Trek: Discovery” new episodes on Paramount+ (free trial) .

“Star Trek: Discovery” first premiered in 2017, and kicked off a wave of new “Star Trek” storytelling that helped drive new subscribers to CBS All Access, which was still finding its footing in the streaming service wars, and was later rebranded as Paramount+. It was the first new “Star Trek” TV series since 2005′s “Enterprise,” and since then, the franchise has debuted five new Original Series, including “Short Treks,” “Picard,” “Lower Decks,” “Prodigy” and “Brand New Worlds.”

Here’s everything you need to know about Star Trek: Discovery Season 5.

When does ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Season 5 premiere?

The first two episodes, “Red Directive” and “Under The Twin Moons,” will be available to stream, on demand, starting Thursday, April 4. An official release time hasn’t been announced, but Paramount+ is known to release new episodes at 3 a.m. ET/12 a.m. PT.

Check out the trailer:

How can I watch ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Season 5 for FREE?

Sign up for Paramount+ and enjoy a 1-week free trial that includes both new episodes of ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ as well as all four earlier seasons on demand. After your free trial, Paramount+ costs $5.99/month or $59.99 per year, or $11.99/month or $119.99/year for an ad-free experience that also includes Showtime.

Paramount Plus  is an on-demand, over-the-top streaming service from Paramount, which includes content from Paramount-owned brands like CBS, Comedy Central, Nickelodeon, MTV and more. Many Paramount-owned TV shows appear the day after broadcast on the service, and it is the exclusive home of Paramount Plus originals, like Yellowstone spinoff “1883″ or Star Trek spinoff “Picard.” It also airs live NFL and UEFA Champions League games, plus live, 24/7 news from CBS News.

Who is in the ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Season 5 cast?

Familiar faces, recurring guest stars and even a few new faces are in the cast this season, including:

  • Sonequa Martin-Green as Captain Michael Burnham
  • Doug Jones as Saru
  • Anthony Rapp as Paul Stamets
  • Mary Wiseman as Sylvia Tilly
  • Wilson Cruz as Dr. Hugh Culber
  • David Ajala as Cleveland “Book” Booker
  • Blu del Barrio as Adira
  • Callum Keith Rennie as Rayner.
  • Elias Toufexis as L’ak
  • Eve Harlow as Moll

How many episodes are in ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Season 5?

Season 5 includes 10 episodes. That starts with a two-episode premiere, followed by eight weeks of one episode per week.

What happened last time on ‘Discovery’?

The crew of the U.S.S. Discovery is still in the far flung future — as far forward in the canon “Star Trek” timeline as any series has gone, in fact. Last season, the crew was up against another cataclysmic threat, the Dark Matter Anomaly (DMA), capable of destroying entire worlds. The DMA was caused by an extra-galactic race known as the Ten-C, and Discovery was able to solve the problem with successful first contact before it wiped out Earth and Ni’Var, the rechristened home world of the united Vulcan and Romulan people.

What is ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ about?

According to a description from Paramount+, “The fifth and final season will find Captain Burnham and the crew of the U.S.S. Discovery uncovering a mystery that will send them on an epic adventure across the galaxy to find an ancient power whose very existence has been deliberately hidden for centuries. But there are others on the hunt as well…dangerous foes who are desperate to claim the prize for themselves and will stop at nothing to get it.”

How to Watch Star Trek: Discovery With a VPN

A VPN will mask your real IP and assign you one that belongs to a different country, which in this case would be one where Netflix has Star Trek: Discovery in its library. If you’ve never used a VPN, we’ll walk you through setting one up in three easy steps.

First, you’ll need to download and install a VPN on your device. Sign up for a VPN service — we recommend ExpressVPN — and download its application for the relevant device to install it.

download-expressvpn

Once you’ve installed a VPN, you’ll see that the interface has a list of server locations to choose from. For Netflix , look for and connect to a U.K. server to assign a U.K. IP address to your system. For Paramount Plus , choose a U.S. server to use a U.S. IP address.

getting a uk ip address expressvpn servers

Once you’re connected to a U.K. server, try to access the streaming service. You’ll automatically get access to the library and be able to stream Star Trek: Discovery . If you have any issues with the streaming service detecting the VPN, try a different server location.

Season 2 concluded with the Enterprise, Captain Pike, and Spock being left behind in the ‘present’, as the Discovery nosedived into the 32nd century to outrun an artificial intelligence program called ‘Control’. Projecting the action further into the future than any instalment of Star Trek yet, showrunners Alex Kurtzman and Michelle Paradise emancipated themselves from the constraints of existing Star Trek timelines, opening up Season 3 to the exploration of whole new worlds.

Reunited in the year 3188 are the fearless Michael Burnham; Saru, first officer of USS Discovery; science officer Paul Stamets and his husband, Dr Hugh Culber, and the ambitious Sylvia Tilly. New to the show, however, are Blu de Barrio as Adira, Ian Alexander as Gray, and David Ajala as Cleveland “Book” Booker. The latter forebodingly alludes to an event called The Burn, described as “the day the galaxy took a hard left”. How did the past play out? And what has become of the Federation, whose diminished flag we see?

It looks to be a thrillingly dramatic season, but equally, heart-warming and hopeful. So, hold on as we detail how to watch Star Trek: Discovery season 3 online, and prepare to boldly go where no one has gone before.

Where To Watch Every Star Trek TV Show and Movie in Order

Published on.

Rachel Ulatowski

Official JustWatch writer

Paramount has ushered in a new era of Star Trek. Following the conclusion of Star Trek: Discovery , the studio ordered multiple new series and began developing the TV movie Star Trek: Chapter 31 , which will star Academy Award-winning actress Michelle Yeoh. Given its revitalization, now is the perfect time to delve into the franchise. This guide will demonstrate where and how to watch every Star Trek movie and TV show in order.

The Star Trek franchise began in 1966 with the premiere of Star Trek , also known as Star Trek: The Original Series. Created by Gene Roddenberry, the sci-fi series follows Captain Kirk (William Shatner) and First Officer Spock (Leonard Nimoy) as they guide the Enterprise on a mission of intergalactic space exploration. While the show received poor ratings during its three-season run, broadcast syndication and reruns breathed new life into the franchise, garnering it a cult following after its 1969 cancelation.

Following the show’s re-evaluation, Roddenberry convinced Paramount to continue the original series on the big screen with Star Trek: The Motion Picture . Although it wasn’t a huge box-office hit, it did well enough to earn five more sequels, for which Roddenberry was a consultant.

As Star Trek: The Original Series remained one of the most popular syndicated TV shows years after its release, Paramount and Gene Roddenberry began working on another live-action series: Star Trek: The Next Generation . The series takes place aboard a new Enterprise one century after the events of the original series, with Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) at the helm. Along with his crew, Captain Picard carries on his predecessors' mission of exploring new worlds.

Star Trek: The Next Generation also continued on the big screen after its conclusion, receiving four feature films. While films like Star Trek: First Contact were well-received, Star Trek: Nemesis was a critical and financial failure. The failure of Star Trek: Nemesis was followed by another blow as the prequel series Star Trek: Enterprise was canceled amid low ratings.

Paramount switched directions on the big screen and released what many consider a “reboot” trilogy. However, the films aren’t an official reboot as they merely explore an alternate timeline known as the Kelvin Timeline and see Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto take over as Captain Kirk and Spock, respectively.

While the Kelvin Timeline film series played out, Star Trek went on a hiatus on the small screen. After a 12-year break, Paramount revived the franchise, aiming to create Star Trek shows specifically for its streaming service, CBS All Access (now Paramount+). In 2017, it released Star Trek: Discovery, followed by a new round of shows, including Star Trek: Picard , which continued Captain Picard’s story after Star Trek: The Next Generation.

There are no signs of the franchise slowing down, with the first TV movie, Star Trek: Chapter 31, on the way and Paramount showing interest in further Star Trek TV films, theatrical films, and shows.

How to watch the Star Trek franchise in order

Viewers can watch the Star Trek franchise either by release date order or chronologically. Those hoping to watch chronologically should know that the Kelvin Timeline trilogy takes place outside of the timeline of the other shows and movies, so they can technically be watched at any point. Star Trek: Short Treks also does not fit in the chronological order as it is an anthology series. Additionally, viewers may have to jump between shows occasionally due to time jumps in series like Star Trek: Discovery.

See below for the chronological order of every Star Trek show and movie:

Netflix

Star Trek is an American science fiction television series created by Gene Roddenberry that follows the adventures of the starship USS Enterprise and its crew. The show is set in the Milky Way galaxy, roughly during the 2260s. The crew is headed by Captain James T. Kirk, first officer Spock, and chief medical officer Leonard McCoy. Shatner's voice-over introduction during each episode's opening credits stated the starship's purpose: The series was produced from 1966-67 by Desilu Productions, and by Paramount Television from 1968-69. Star Trek aired on NBC from September 8, 1966 to June 3, 1969. Although this television series had the title of Star Trek, it later acquired the retronym of Star Trek: The Original Series to distinguish the show within the media franchise that it began. Star Trek's Nielsen ratings while on NBC were low, and the network canceled it after three seasons and 79 episodes. Nevertheless, the show had a major influence on popular culture and it became a cult classic in broadcast syndication during the 1970s. The show eventually spawned a franchise, consisting of five additional television series, 12 theatrical films, and numerous books, games, toys, and other products.

As my Star Trek character commanded the weight of a starship, I was hours away from becoming a father

This First Person column is the experience of Patrick Kwok-Choon, who was born and raised in Montreal. For more information about CBC's First Person stories, please see the FAQ .

I was on the set of Star Trek: Discovery and my character Gen Rhys had been thrust into the captain's chair, burdened with making life-and-death decisions for himself and his crew.

I can't believe this was happening to me.

It was a milestone for my character — the first time as acting captain on the Starship Discovery — but also an important moment for me as a lifelong fan of the franchise.

Sitting in that chair, I couldn't help but think of the iconic performances by Patrick Stewart, Kate Mulgrew and Avery Brooks. The weight of their legacy was palpable, and being part of that tradition felt incredibly significant.

But my real concern wasn't the scene; it was the crisis unfolding at home.

At 3 a.m., my wife went into labour. When her contractions increased, we called our midwife at 9 a.m. Despite the unpredictability of childbirth, she assured me, based on her extensive experience, that it was OK for me to go to work. She mentioned that while it's not guaranteed, deliveries typically occur at night, offering me some peace of mind.

A screenshot of CBS/Paramount+ show Star Trek: Discovery.

I was contractually obligated to go into work that day and my wife reassured me that her contractions were only uncomfortable, not painful. She insisted I go.

With a heavy heart, I asked my neighbour to watch over my wife and to call me if there was any emergency. I would come home immediately, regardless of the consequences.

When I arrived at work, my castmates greeted me with joy. The higher-ups were quickly informed and a production head came down to assure me that everything was being done to expedite my departure. The shooting schedule was rearranged so all my scenes would be filmed first. I immediately called my wife to share the news.

As I spoke with her, another production head approached, offering congratulations and reiterating the plan. But he added, "If things get too crazy at home and we haven't finished, just bail." I told him my wife felt we were still in the early phases of labour, and we should still have time. He leaned in, gave me a hug, and whispered in my ear, "Just bail."

A man takes a photo of him sitting in a hair styling chair.

All hands on deck

I was at a loss for words — studios aren't obligated to accommodate actors in such situations. I've heard terrible stories of actors unable to attend births, weddings and even funerals due to rigid shooting schedules. Yet here, amid the bustling set of a multimillion-dollar shoot, this person was giving me permission to prioritize my family. It was a heartfelt gesture that I'll never forget.

Returning to the chair, it felt like an actual "all hands on deck" moment straight out of Star Trek. Each department rallied together with precision and urgency, and I could feel their support willing me forward. Together, we navigated the challenges of the day, ensuring I could fulfill my duty as both actor and father-to-be.

After what felt like an eternity, the first assistant director called out, "That's a wrap on Patrick. He's free to leave."

The cast and crew of Star-Trek: Discovery behind the scenes with the director.

I leaped out of my chair and shouted, "I'm going to have a baby!" to the applause of the cast and crew.

At this point, I had been at work for nine hours and it was 8 p.m. I rocketed out of that studio at warp speed. When I got home, my wife's contractions had reached the point where the midwife advised it was time to go to the hospital. I couldn't believe my luck. Despite the chaos of the day, I had made it just in time for the delivery.

Five hours later, as I held my newborn in my arms, I was overwhelmed with a sense of relief and profound joy. The juxtaposition of the day's events felt surreal — acting out life-and-death stakes on set only to experience the miracle of life in reality.

Patrick pictured with his baby in a sling around his front.

My child is now 20 months old. Just this weekend, I had the luxury of taking my child out for a morning stroll, pushing them for what felt like an eternity on the swings, and sitting in silence together on a park bench as I watched them slowly gobble up a muffin, basking in the absolute wonder of this little miracle. A gift. My gift.

Patrick's baby pictured from the chin down wearing a yellow Star-Trek shirt.

I am miles away from the fearful day on set and have come safely to the other side of things – just as I'm light-years from my youth when I feared becoming a parent because, in my naive mind, it meant getting trapped into something or sacrificing my career, time and energy.

But I think most parents would agree: what you gain is absolutely priceless. No longer do I find myself consumed with work or clinging desperately to career aspirations. I have reshaped my understanding of what's really important to me and my life is immensely richer for it.

The day I spent in the captain's chair on Discovery will forever be etched in my memory, not just for the professional milestone it represented but for the personal journey it paralleled. The lines between fiction and reality blurred, the weight of commanding a starship colliding with the anticipation of welcoming new life into the world.

It was a stark reminder of the beautiful, unpredictable nature of life, where our most significant moments often unfold in the most unexpected ways.
