New zealand north island travel faqs, do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

How do I get to the North Island

Auckland is the major international airport for New Zealand's North Island. If you are flying to the North Island from the South Island or vice versa, there are flights between different North Island and South Island airports. 

Car rental desks are available at Auckland Airport and many companies also have an office in the North Island's towns.

Vehicle ferry services which also take foot passengers travel between Wellington in the North Island and Picton in the South Island daily.

The trip across the Cook Strait takes three-and-a-half hours. 

Getting around the North Island

Most people travel by car or join a tour to get around the North Island of New Zealand. Buses travel between some towns but schedules can be limited. 

When should I visit the North Island?

The North Island's weather is changeable. You could feel like you're freezing in summer or find yourself strolling around in shorts and a t-shirt in winter. Or piling on warm clothes because the temperature has dipped towards zero degrees at pretty much any time of year. The North Island is generally busier during the Australian and New Zealand school holidays but not excessively so. 

What should I pack for the North Island?

In short, pretty much everything. Bring clothes you can layer plus a jumper or jacket, wet weather gear, a hat and a beanie. And don't be surprised if you end up wearing all these things on the same day.

If you're dining out or hitting the bars in Wellington or Auckland, some smart casual clothes are a must. 

What should I wear in the North Island?

The North Island is a fairly casual place, especially if you're basing yourself in one of the smaller regional areas like   Hawke's Bay . 

People tend to dress up if they are 'hitting the town' at night in Auckland and the New Zealand capital.  Smart casual is the norm at most restaurants, aside from the signature 'date night' ones like Hippopotamus in   Wellington   where people tend to dress-up more.

There is good WiFi coverage in all of the North Island's major towns. If you are visiting some of the more remote locations in the North Island, coverage can be patchy at times.

Upon arrival in Auckland, you will be welcomed by one of our representatives and transferred by private vehicle to your accommodation in the central city.

Today you join an excursion that takes you to the hidden spots of Auckland city, the rugged Waitakere Ranges, just outside of Auckland, and then on to the beautiful black sand beaches of the western shores. Your Māori guide will explain the area's cultural significance on this fascinating day out.

You collect a hire car from the downtown depot this morning and travel to the Coromandel Peninsula. You can either take the more direct route through the mountain ranges of the Coromandel Peninsula, which takes around two and a half hours, or drive the longer coastal road to see the stunning coastline and stop in at the Coromandel Mussel Kitchen for lunch, then visit Stuart and his wild pigs on the 309 road. The coastal drive takes around five hours but is not to be missed.

You have today at leisure to enjoy the Coromandel area. Don't miss Hot Water Beach and Cathedral Cove. We suggest exploring the coastal road today if you took the direct road over yesterday.

Make your way along the Bay of Plenty to Whakatane where you will spend the day exploring the town.

Today, spend the day exploring Whakatane, which is known for its fishing, walking trails and hot springs.

Today, you make your way through scenic Waioeka Gorge to the southern coast and the laid-back town of Gisborne.

Enjoy a day at leisure exploring some of the beautiful white sand beaches along the eastern coast. This is a great place to try your hand at surfing.

Make your way along the coast to Hastings in the Hawke's Bay wine region today. This evening, you will enjoy the best wine tour in the area, where you will visit several wineries. You will be served a tasting menu dinner throughout the evening, with one course accompanied by beautifully paired wines at each location.

A day at leisure to enjoy the Art Deco city of Napier and the surrounding vineyards of Hawke's Bay. You may like to join an Art Deco tour of the town or visit the gannet colony at Cape Kidnappers.

Today, you head inland to the volcanic interior of the North Island and the three peaks of Tongariro, Ngauruhoe, and Ruapehu that make up Tongariro National Park.

You have a day at leisure and, weather permitting, may like to try the famous Tongariro Alpine Crossing walk today. For something less strenuous take a more leisurely stroll in the National Park or ride the chair-lift up to the top for some spectacular views.

You journey along the 'Forgotten World Highway' today, a scenic drive through some very rural landscapes which bring you out on the eastern side of Taranaki (Egmont) National Park.

Enjoy a day exploring the slopes of Mount Taranaki, or enjoying views of the volcano from the beaches around New Plymouth.

Today you make your way to Waitomo, and take a tour around the famous Glowworm Caves.

Make your way to Auckland Airport today and return your hire car as you join your international flight.

This drive will take you through the thermal region just south of Rotorua. Home to a plethora of unique geothermal attractions including boiling mud pits, natural hot springs and steaming geysers, this area is a must do before you move on to Napier. Notable attractions are Wai-O-Tapu , Waimangu and Craters of the Moon . Continue on to Taupo and marvel at the lake, a giant crater formed following a volcanic eruption in the year 180 CE. As you approach the city, be sure to stop at Huka Falls to view the spectacular sight of hundreds of cubic metres of water spilling every second down the narrow 11 metre drop. For an extra thrill take a jet-boat ride to the base of the falls. Leaving Taupo, follow the road as it climbs the rugged Ahimanawa Range before descending back down the Pacific Coast to art deco Napier.

Day 1 – Arrive Auckland and explore Waiomu Kauri Grove

Welcome to the New Zealand's North Island, New Zealand's beating cultural heart. A vibrant and diverse landscape made up of active geothermal areas, dormant volcanoes, pristine beaches, immense forests and subterranean wonders. After meeting your guide and fellow travellers in Auckland, we’ll head east to the Kauri forests of the Coromandel region. 

Waiomu Kauri Grove

One of the largest and longest-living trees in the world, the New Zealand Kauri forests are an impressive site to behold. Kauri trees can live for over 1000 years and reach heights of 60-70 metres. This morning we'll explore the Waiomu Kauri Grove and get up close to these giants of the forest. This afternoon we'll head further east to the golden sand beaches of the Coromandel. We'll spend the night in the coastal resort town of Whitianga.

Day 2 – Kayak Cathedral Cove & Explore Hot Water Beach

This morning we’ll travel the short distance along the Coromandel coastline to Hahei and get ready to paddle through tantalisingly turquoise waters out to Cathedral Cove. We’ll then take some time to explore the world-famous Hot Water Beach. Later this afternoon we'll make our way down to Rotorua, a rich cultural hub and geothermal wonderland where we'll spend the night.

We’ll paddle our way through the Te Whanganui-A-Hei Marine Reserve exploring ancient sea caves and rock gardens along the way. Our destination is Cathedral Cove, accessible only by foot, boat or kayak, this natural rock archway joins two secluded coves shaded by magnificent pohutukawa trees.  

Explore Hot Water Beach

This afternoon we head to world-renowned Hot Water Beach, famous for the warm geothermal waters that sit just under the sand. Enjoy a stroll along this gorgeous coastline and dip your toes in the turquoise waters of the Pacific Ocean. If the tides are right, you can experience the natural hot springs bubbling up through the sand, a true-blue Kiwi experience.

Rotorua Maori Culture & Huka Falls

Day 3 – Maori Culture, Geothermal Wonderland and Redwoods Hike

Set in a ‘land of lakes’, the bubbling mud pools, spewing geysers and rising steam give Rotorua an otherworldly quality. This morning we'll visit the Whakarewarewa M ā ori Village where we will see the M ā ori values of manaakitanga (hospitality) and kaitiakitanga (guardianship) on display. We'll also get to witness the geothermal wonderland that the Te Whakarewarewa valley is famous for and enjoy a hāngi (a traditional Māori feast) together. Before travelling south to Taupō, we’ll pop our hiking boots on and walk amongst the jaw-dropping Redwood forest on the outskirts of Rotorua. We’ll be staying in Taup ō for the next two nights.

Geothermal Wonderland & Maori Culture Experience

Whakarewarewa is the legacy and home of the Tūhourangi Ngāti Wāhiao people, who have been sharing their unique way of life with visitors from all around the world for over two hundred years. See the boiling hot pools and bubbling mud, and learn how the Maori residents utilise and respect the ever-changing forces beneath their land.

Redwoods Hike & Huka Falls

Before leaving Rotorua we’ll stop by the Whakarewarewa forest to walk amongst the magnificent Redwoods. It’s an easy walk alongside these gentle giants that originate from California! After travelling south towards Taupo we’ll stop by the legendary Huka Falls and you’ll get to witness first hand the phenomenal power of this 11 metre high waterfall.

Day 4 – Explore Tongariro National Park

Tongariro is New Zealand’s oldest national park and boasts dual World Heritage site status, acknowledged for both its cultural and natural significance. Today you'll explore this moonlike landscape and discover the beauty and wonder of this incredible National Park. 

We'll spend the morning on one of our favourite sections of the Tongariro Crossing before exploring the heart of the National Park itself. You'll experience the diverse landscape, have options to explore other short walks and learn of the park's history and cultural significance from your expert local guides. This afternoon you'll have the option to walk to Taranaki Falls or enjoy some free time to explore the National Park and Whakapapa Village.

Day 5 –Waitomo Caves & Finish in Auckland

It may be the last day of your Sweet North trip, but it’ll be one to remember as we explore the hidden depths of Waitomo, marvelling at the limestone formations, crystal tapestries and thousands of glowworms that illuminate the cave system. We’ll then make our way back to Auckland where we’ll say our farewells. If you’re heading down to the South Island to join us on another trip, we’ll help with a smooth transition.

Spellbound Waitomo Caves

The last activity of our trip is a truly magical one! We’ll visit two vastly different caves and learn all about their formation. Stepping onto a raft, you’ll be transported into a unique environment where it seems the night sky is always shining. With glow worms galore you will marvel at the constellations they seem to create! In the next cave you will slowly wander through whilst gazing at these wonderful creatures that are only found here in New Zealand!

Finish in Auckland

After emerging from underground, we’ll enjoy our last lunch together before hitting the road back to Auckland, allowing plenty of time to happily reminisce about the last five days. New friends and wonderful experiences have had their share in creating a tonne of memories to last you all the way home and beyond.

We’re happy to drop you at the airport or at your Auckland accommodation. We recommend that you combine this trip with one of our South Island itineraries to enjoy the complete New Zealand experience. The Sweet North trip works particularly well in conjunction with the Pure South, if you're short on time, or any of our longer South Island trips if you really want to leave no stone unturned.

How fit do I need to be for the Sweet North?

The Sweet North trip is designed for people who enjoy being active in the outdoors, but you don't need to be super-fit or an outdoor expert in any way. On the Sweet North trip you will walk between 3 to 5 hours each day on well-formed tracks. The average distance walked is 9km/5.6mi.  If you enjoy hiking and exploring then you will enjoy this trip.

What is the accommodation like on the Sweet North?

What time does the Sweet North trip start and finish?

New Zealand is not a tipping culture. If you'd like to show your appreciation to your guides with a tip it is very much appreciated but not an expectation on our trips.

Will I have WiFi or internet access throughout the trip?

Yes – we are well connected in New Zealand! You will have access to the internet, at your accommodation whether free or for a small fee, every night on your trip. While New Zealand is quite tech savvy the wifi at some accommodation may not be of the speed you are used to back home.

Is there electricity at all of the places we stay on the Sweet North trip?

Yes, all of the places we stay on the Sweet North trip have electricity.

Tell me about your safety standards

Safety is always our top priority. We take great pride in our impeccable safety record and our safety management plans. Your New Zealand Trails Guides are highly experienced outdoors professionals who are first aid qualified and fully equipped with a satellite phone, personal locator beacon and first aid kit. Our trips have direct access to our highly experienced operations team and other outside services 24 hours a day.

What kind of people will be on my Sweet North trip?

Our guests are like-minded people from Australia, the UK, Canada and America, and come from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences. On average, we have a 50/50 split between men and women, with several single travellers on each trip as well as couples and friends travelling together.

Do you need any outdoors experience for the Sweet North trip?

You certainly don’t need any technical outdoors experience to enjoy your New Zealand Trails trip. If you enjoy being out and about in the outdoors and are a generally active person who enjoys hobbies like walking, cycling, golf, tennis or dancing then you will have no problems at all with the walks and activities on your trip.

The kayaking activity on your trip is suitable for beginners and is in a calm cove. There’s no need for you to have ever been kayaking before. You will be in double sea kayaks, which are very stable. A specialist kayak guide will teach you everything you need to know before you head out and will be with you out on the water.

How many people will be on my trip?

We run small-group tours, so along with your guides, there are typically 14 guests in your group. We have found keeping our group sizes small is the perfect way to make sure everyone has the best time.

Why do you run the Sweet North in two different directions?

Our Sweet North trip is very popular and we often run two trips departing on the same date, with no more than 14 guests on any one trip. This trip has been carefully crafted to give you exclusive access to New Zealand's best walks, activities, and accommodations. By running one trip eastbound and the other westbound we are able to give every guest this exclusive experience. The published itinerary is the westbound trip, though it doesn't matter which direction you go as both trips start and finish in Auckland and the itineraries are identical, they just run in opposite directions. If for any reason you would like to be on a particular departure direction then just let us know.

How do I get between the North and South Island if I'm joining you on a Sweet North and a South Island trip?

If you are joining us on both a Sweet North and a South Island trip then  it’s very easy to transition between the South and North Islands. Our national airline  Air New Zealand operates several flights a day between Auckland and Queenstown or Christchurch. We leave the flights for you to organise so that you can choose where you would like to spend any extra time between your trips and the time that suits your plans. 

What does going on a guided trip entail?

Coming on a guided trip with us means we take care of everything! Our small group tours have a maximum of 14 guests per trip along with your local, New Zealand guide and are designed to make it easy, fun and safe for you to explore on your New Zealand trip of a lifetime.

Before your trip: You’ll have a dedicated guest service team member to assist you every step of the way. From advising what you should pack to choosing the best flights to arrive for your trip on time and helping organize pre and post-trip accommodation. No matter when you book or how far in advance you plan your travel, our team is here to help.

During your trip: On your trip, your dedicated local New Zealand guide  will take care of everything. They provide food, snacks and safety information, as well as arrange all of your activities and make sure you get where you need to be safely and on time. They’ll also share their extensive knowledge of our country and culture and provide flexibility so you can enjoy New Zealand at the pace that’s right for you.

After your trip: Your dedicated guest service team member will be there to support you. From helping book accommodation and advising on the best flights to sharing local knowledge on other activities you might enjoy or the best places to eat. You’ll also receive all the photos from your trip that your guides have collected along the way so you can cherish the memories of your adventure.

Can you help with pre/post-trip accommodation and flights?

Yes, we can! Our dedicated Guest Services team member Becky will be here to help every step of the way. She can advise you on which flights you should book to ensure you arrive for your trip on time, the best accommodation for you pre and post-trip and everything in between. She’s here to make sure your travel experience is seamless and stress-free.

How do we get around New Zealand? What happens with my luggage?

On day one of your trip, your guides will pick you up from either our joining hotel or the airport in a late-model Mercedes Benz Sprinter. This will be your vehicle for the duration of the trip and your luggage will travel with you in the luggage compartment. Each day we'll drive between 0.5 and 3 hours to reach our next destination. Our trips are carefully planned to give you the most time exploring the outdoors and any travel is always broken up with hikes, activities and coffee/bathroom breaks. You'll bring your small day pack with you inside the vehicle, with just your hiking essentials (jacket, water bottle, sun hat etc) and will be all you will need to carry with you when you are out exploring. Your luggage will stay in the vehicle until we reach our accommodation for the evening. 

If you are joining us on both a Sweet North and a South Island trip,  it is a very easy to transition between the South and North Islands. Activity Level

The Sweet North is an activity level 2 to 3.  Designed for you to have maximum flexibility. You can scale your activity level up to a 3 or down to a 2 every day so you can enjoy New Zealand at a pace that's right for you. Walk on well-formed tracks and enjoy a mixture of day walks and activities that showcase the best of New Zealand.

Wellington Arrival

Guided: Upon arrival at Wellington Airport, a shuttle driver will be waiting for you as you clear customs. This driver will be holding a signboard with your name on it and will take you to your accommodation in the city. The day and night are free to spend at your leisure and your guide will meet you tomorrow morning.

Self Drive: Upon arrival at Wellington Airport you will collect your rental vehicle within the airport terminal. Make your way to your inner city accommodation where the day and night are free to spend at your leisure and prepare for the adventure ahead.

Today is your day to explore the Coolest Little Capital in the World! This morning you will take the Cable Car from the city up to Kelburn, where you will be able to wander the beautiful Botanical Gardens. Next, hop on the free shuttle to Zealandia, the world’s first fully-fenced urban ecosanctuary, with an extraordinary 500-year vision to restore a Wellington valley’s forest and freshwater ecosystems as closely as possible to their pre-human state. The 225 hectare ecosanctuary is a ground+breaking conservation project that has reintroduced 18 species of native wildlife back into the area, 6 of which were previously absent from mainland New Zealand for over 100 years. Tonight why not enjoy one of the delicious restaurants the city has to offer?

Wellington to Tongariro National Park (Ohakune)

This morning you depart Wellington and continue North to the beautiful Tongariro National Park. In the afternoon you’ll arrive in the beautiful ski resort of Ohakune where you may wish to take a hike in the National Park itself. Enjoy a night at the Powderhorn Chateau where the cast of Lord of the Rings stayed during filming in the area!

Tongariro National Park (Ohakune) to Rotorua

En route today we recommend taking a short detour to the village of Whakapapa and the Chateau Tongariro in the Tongariro National Park where you may wish to enjoy a hike. One of The Road Trip’s favourites is 2 hours long featuring native bush, volcanic views and stunning waterfalls. In clear weather you will spot 3 of New Zealand’s most active volcanoes – Tongariro, Ruapehu and Ngaurauhoe (also known as Mt Doom). Heading North today, you will reach Lake Taupō, New Zealand’s largest lake. Winding your way around the lake, you will reach the lakeside holiday town of Taupo.

Further down the road, stop at the mighty Huka Falls where you could take a spin in the Huka Falls Jet and experience the thrill from beneath (optional). Continuing on the ‘Thermal Explorer Highway,’ you will arrive at Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland- a Wonderland of Stunning Geothermal Activity. You will visit New Zealand’s largest thermal mud pool, sinter terraces and stunning hot and cold pools of many different colours. You will arrive in Rotorua late afternoon where you could have a walk through the wonderful redwood forests or a look at Rotorua’s lovely Government Gardens and lakefront. Tonight perhaps enjoy a soak in the natural hot springs of Polynesian Spa.

This morning you will enjoy the Ultimate Canopy Tour with Rotorua Canopy Tours. This is an unforgettable 3.5-hour Canopy Tour journey. Venture deep into the wilderness to experience prehistoric New Zealand forest at its best. Following this, today is free for leisure activities. Options include: Rotorua Gondola and Luge, zorbing, or the spectacular Treewalk of the redwood forest. This evening you will enjoy an authentic cultural experience at Te Pā Tū (formerly Tamaki Māori Village). Te Pā Tū offers seasonal celebration experiences. “Tū Te Rā.” Tū Te Rā is a summer celebration, aligned with the maramataka – the Māori lunar calendar. This is a time when the sun expresses optimal energy, the days are longer, and light nourishes the natural world. Tū Te Rā celebrates the abundant harvest of this season, and explores concepts, rituals, and stories of ancient Māori warfare and peace in a feast of culture and cuisine.

Rotorua to Whitianga via Hobbiton

Today you will head towards the sunny Coromandel Peninsula. En route you will visit Hobbiton and The Shire’s Rest, the only remaining film set from The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit Trilogies. You’ll also enjoy a buffet style feast in the festive marquee next to the Green Dragon! Following this, drive through lush native forest and end up in Whitianga, where the afternoon/evening is free to enjoy this beachside paradise.

Whitianga and Surrounds

This morning you will enjoy a glass bottom boat cruise from Whitianga. You’ll see Cathedral Cove and its fabulous white sandy beaches, iconic native New Zealand trees and incredible rock formations. Stunning volcanic coastline including sheer cliffs, towering pinnacles, blowholes and sea caves such as Orua Sea cave. Look through the glass panels to see a diverse amount of marine life including red snapper, red moki, leatherjackets and schools of demoiselles and blue mau mau. Look closely through the kelp forest to spot stingrays, crayfish and octopus. On the surface keep your eyes peeled for blue penguins, sea birds and marine mammals such as dolphins, orca and seals.

The rest of the day is free to explore the beauty of The Coromandel Peninsula. Perhaps take a walk to one of New Zealand’s most stunning beaches; Cathedral Cove where you wander through ancient native forest to the pristine beach that houses this striking rock formation. Other options for the day include a glass-bottom boat trip to a marine reserve, bathing at The Lost Spring, a visit to New Chum’s Beach (self-drive only), horse-riding at a local farm or kayaking to the idyllic other worldly paradise of Whenuakura/Donut Island (self-drive only) – (all optional – extra cost).

Please note that if you choose a guided tour, your tour guide will have a full day off guiding and driving today.

Whitianga to Auckland via Coromandel

This morning you depart Whitianga and head to NZ’s largest city, Auckland. There may be time for a walk through one the region’s many Kauri Tree forests, where you will encounter the flora and fauna of New Zealand’s North Island at its best. You follow the coast road to the town of Coromandel, where you will take a trip on ‘The Driving Creek Railway’- New Zealand’s only narrow-gauge mountain railway, with a working pottery and wild life sanctuary. From here continue on to Auckland where you will spend the next 2 nights.

Auckland Sightseeing

Today you have a full day to explore Auckland, with sights including a visit to one of Auckland’s inner city beaches; Mission Bay, where it is possible to see stunning Pohutukawa trees. The trip could also take in sights such as Mt Eden, a stunning viewpoint and one of Auckland’s most famous volcanic craters, and perhaps a gander at one of The Road Trip’s favourite look out spots that boasts great views of both Rangitoto Island and Waiheke Island. Perhaps venture out to Muriwai Beach to visit a large Gannet colony on the seaside cliffs and experience the Kauri forests of the Waitakere Ranges.

Today you will transfer to Auckland Airport for your onward travel arrangements. We trust that you’ve had an excellent time in New Zealand and wish you safe travels to your next destination.

3. Walk the Pouakai Crossing

The  Pouakai Crossing (opens in new window)  is a 19-kilometre trail that takes in the highlights of  Egmont National Park . Winding across the slopes of the mighty Taranaki Maunga, this track is one of the best full-day hikes in the North Island. You'll get spectacular views, particularly at the picturesque Pouakai tarns. On a clear, calm day, these small alpine pools reflect the mountain perfectly, offering unmissable photo opportunities.

Beneath the water around the Poor Knights Islands lie caves, arches, cliffs and tunnels, creating a submarine playground to explore. 10. Chase waterfalls in Taupō

Fed by the mighty Waikato River, Lake Taupō and  the Taupō region is abundant with water and waterfalls.

Huka Falls is a thunderous fall where nearly a quarter of a million litres of water bursts through a natural gorge. You can visit Huka Falls via a short walking track to a viewing platform, or for an added thrill take a jet boat ride up the river, close enough to the base of the falls that you will feel spray on your face.

Other spectacular falls in Taupō include Otupoto Falls, where the water comes out of a cliff and falls straight into Lake Taupō, and Tieke Falls, which you can reach via the popular Waihaha River Cycle Trail (opens in new window) .

Milford Sound, Fiordland National Park

The awe-inspiring proportions of Milford Sound are difficult to grasp. Its sheer mountainsides, ravines and precipitous waterfalls dwarf the cruise liners that come to visit this watery wonderland at the edge of the Southern Alps. Novelist Rudyard Kipling was so struck by the fiords, he described them as the eighth wonder of the world, and no trip to New Zealand’s South Island would be complete without taking a tour here. The fiord is best seen by boat, or scenic flights offer a bird's-eye view.

Franz Josef Glacier, West Coast

Flowing thousands of feet down from mountain peaks all the way to the ocean, the sheer scale of Franz Josef Glacier isn’t fully apparent until you come face-to-face with its base. The temperate New Zealand climate, low altitude, and proximity to the town of the same name make this frozen landscape of compacted blue ice easily accessible too – you can hike around its base and come within 2,460 feet of its terminal face, opt for a guided ice walk or sign up for some aerial sightseeing with a helicopter tour. 

Abel Tasman National Park, Golden Bay

Abel Tasman National Park is a lush coastal paradise near the top of South Island, indented with platinum bays and turquoise waters, with quirky geologic features like Split Apple Rock – which scientists believe was split by a natural phenomenon known as ‘ice wedging’ during an ice age more than 120 million years ago – sited just offshore. The park's bounty of unspoiled beaches include Torrent Bay and Kaiteriteri Beach, voted one of the top five in the world. Kayaking tours are a popular way to appreciate the area’s immense scenic beauty, or to explore on foot, you can follow the Abel Tasman track along the coast.

Blue Pools, Mount Aspiring National Park

The stunning aquamarine Blue Pools in Unesco-listed Mount Aspiring National Park are one of South Island’s scenic masterpieces. Sited at the point where the glacial Makarora River flows into Lake Wanaka, you can follow the beautiful forest trail of Blue Pools Track at Haast Pass to a suspension bridge crossing the pools, where the clear, cool water tempts swimmers, especially on sunny days. 

Orakei Korako, Waikato

To admire the seismic energy of Mother Nature without the crowds, take the ferry across Lake Ohakuri to the hidden valley of Orakei Korako Geothermal Park. Just as spectacular as Rotorua’s fizzing landscapes, the park’s gigantic, technicolor hot springs, geysers, and mud pools are a bubbling hot soup of geothermal activity. Lake Tekapo, Canterbury

Lake Tekapo is a sight to behold. This turquoise lake in the Southern Alps, fringed by bright pink and purple lupins between November and February each year and surrounded by snow-capped peaks, is truly picturesque. The lake gets its intense color from glacier-grounded minerals suspended in the water. Part of a Unesco Dark Sky Reserve, turn your eyes skywards as night falls for some of the best views of space from Earth.

Elephant Rocks, North Otago

Part of a Unesco-listed geopark, New Zealand’s coast around North Otago is strewn with weird and wonderful geologic marvels that are well worth a stop at for a photo opp. Aptly-named for their smooth, gray humps and curves, Elephant Rocks appear like a herd of fossilized elephants grazing on the green hillsides, close to the Island Cliff-Duntroon road. The strange, weathered stones even formed the backdrop for scenes in the first The Chronicles of Narnia film.

Fox Glacier, West Coast

Another of New Zealand’s most spectacular and accessible icy wonders, the 13km-long Fox Glacier slopes down from 8,530 feet high in the Southern Alps into the ocean, close to the Franz Josef Glacier on the country’s west coast. At Fox Glacier Village, join guided tours and stay in accommodation that provides easy access to an Ice Age wilderness of frozen valleys, tunnels, and caves surrounded by forest. Ambitious explorers can even arrange a heli-hike to the peak of the glacier, or take in the magnificent view from the ground at Cook Flat Road, en route to Lake Matheson.

Huka Falls, Waikato

Natural hydro-power at its most impressive, Huka Falls funnels New Zealand’s longest river, the Waikato, into a steep and narrow ravine with more than 4,840 gallons of icy-blue water per second roaring over the edge. Right at the top of the falls, a footbridge above the spray offers magnificent views, while walking tracks lead to great vantage points along the river. To feel the sheer force of the falls from the water, board a cruise or take a jet boat tour.

Lake Taupo, Waikato

This sparkling freshwater-filled crater is New Zealand’s largest lake, measuring half the size of London and rimmed by epic scenery including stratovolcano Mount Ruapehu and Tongariro National Park. While there are boundless outdoor activities available at Taupo, kayaking to see the Maori rock carvings at Mine Bay is an absolute must. The spectacular Orakei Korako geothermal park and thundering Huka Falls are both close by too.

Kaitoke Regional Park, Greater Wellington

The bewitching beauty of Kaitoke Regional Park’s crystalline rivers and rainforests won it a part in the Lord of the Rings films, doubling as the elvish realm of Rivendell. Its untouched verdant valleys rushing with water are a natural haven that’s easy to explore on foot via the well-worn walking tracks that snake between ancient native trees. The forest canopy is home to a number of rare birds, including endemic kaka parrots and New Zealand falcons.

Moeraki boulders, Otago coast

These huge, bulbous anomalies scattering the sand of Koekohe Beach, between the towns of Moeraki and Hampden, add a different dimension to South Island’s scenic North Otago coast. Appearing like giant cannonballs up to 6.5 feet high, the geologic wonders look as though they were carved by human hands, but in fact they are made of calcified rock concreted together 65 million years ago and slowly released from the soft seabed by coastal erosion. Similar Koutu Boulders can be found around Hokianga Harbour on North Island.

Mount Cook, Christchurch-Canterbury

No list of New Zealand’s natural wonders would be complete without mentioning the country’s tallest mountain, Mount Cook, also commonly called Aoraki. A pure alpine wilderness of snowfields, glaciers, and vanishing peaks more than 9,840 feet high make up Mount Cook, which is surprisingly accessible to visitors. Walking trails fan out from the village, including a one-hour hike to view the spectacular Tasman Glacier. You may even encounter cheeky kea (mountain parrots) along the way.

Ninety Mile Beach, Northland

The iconic Ninety Mile Beach at the far northern tip of North Island is a wide band of seemingly endless golden sand, which, contrary to its name, is in fact 55 miles long. The beach is used as an official road at low tide, with buses offering tours along the beach. Boasting one of the best left-hand surf breaks in the world, the beach is a haven for surfers, while beach activities also include bodyboarding down the sand dunes. The beach is also renowned for its stunning sunsets.

New Zealand Christmas Trees, Northland

The native Pohutukawa tree, also known as New Zealand’s Christmas Tree, is a unique natural feature common in the north of North Island but found all across the country. The wide-canopied trees burst into a profusion of scarlet blossoms every December around Christmas time, and have become synonymous with the festive period. The hardy evergreen is notable for growing in inhospitable spots too, clinging to cliffsides or transforming barren lava fields into a garden of life.

Pancake Rocks, West Coast

This stunning natural attraction at Dolomite Point near the village of Punakaiki on the South Island’s West Coast offers elemental entertainment at its best. Part of Paparoa National Park, named for its flat-packed layers of rock that look like stacks of giant pancakes teetering over the frothing ocean, the geology itself is awe-inspiring. But the power of its air and water vents, exploding suddenly into the sky, offers all the thrill of a fireworks display.

Pohutu Geyser, Rotorua

The Rotorua area is jam-packed with geologic marvels, but Pohutu Geyser towers above the rest – suddenly erupting boiling water 98 feet into the air at least once every hour to the delight of onlookers. The largest active geyser in the southern hemisphere, Pohutu is part of Te Puia’s Te Whakarewarewa Geothermal Valley, full of bubbling pools and coursing elemental energy. Look out for the nearby Prince of Wales Feathers geyser, which always shoots water just before its bigger neighbor erupts.

Lake Matheson, West Coast

In Lake Matheson, nature has created a perfect mirror of South Island’s immense ancient forests and towering Southern Alps that form the island’s backbone. Also known as Reflection Lake, its serene, dark waters are a looking glass for two of New Zealand’s mightiest peaks – Mount Cook (Aoraki) and Mount Tasman – positioned just to the east. The lake was made when nearby Fox Glacier retreated and makes for an ideal stop on an itinerary mapping southern New Zealand’s natural wonders.

Sinbad Gully, Fiordland National Park

A lost world flanked by mountains and carved out by glaciers in Fiordland National Park, Sinbad Gully’s rivers and forests lay hidden for centuries. Hemmed in by the famous Mitre Peak on one side and Llawrenny Peaks on the other, the gully opens out into the jaw-dropping fiords of Milford Sound. Cut off from the world, nature has gone her own way here, creating strange species found nowhere else. The gully was the last mainland stronghold for the critically endangered Kakapo (pictured), a huge, cuddly, flightless parrot now only found on Codfish Island.

Aurora Australis, Queenstown

The South’s answer to the Northern Lights, the Aurora Australis is less well-known but its lime green and rosy light show is just as spectacular. One of the top places to view the curtain of electro-charged lights is around Queenstown on New Zealand’s South Island, but the closer you can get to the South Pole, the better. Most Southern Lights shows occur during the Southern Hemisphere’s autumn and winter months, from March to September.

Sutherland Falls, Fiordland National Park

Fiordland National Park is one of the world’s largest protected areas, covering more than 5,000 square miles of pristine wilderness and harboring more than just a few spectacular sights. They include Sutherland Falls – the country’s highest waterfall – overflowing down steep cliffs from a lake more than half a kilometer above the valley floor. There are two ways to see the falls up close – hiking the renowned Milford Track or taking a scenic flight from nearby hubs such as Milford and Te Anau.

Snares Islands, Southern Ocean

Penguins are the chief inhabitants of the wild and untamed sub-Antarctic Snares, part of a protected World Heritage area that’s the last frontier between South Island and Antarctica. Here, yellow-eyed penguins run tracks through pristine forests and line the steep seaside cliffs alongside seals and seabirds. The remote, uninhabited islands are reachable by expedition cruises that take in the other islands and wildlife.

Waipoua Forest, Bay of Islands

This primordial world of towering ancient trees on the northern tip of New Zealand is the largest remaining tract of native forest in Northland. It's home to Tane Mahuta – the Lord of the Forest – a 2,000-year-old sacred kauri tree that measures 14 feet around its trunk and almost 59 feet up to its first branch. That's young compared to another giant kauri tree found here: Te Matua Ngahere, meaning Father of the Forest, is estimated to be between 2,500 and 3,000 years old.

Te Waikoropupu Springs, Nelson Tasman

Te Waikoropupu Springs contain some of the clearest water ever measured and they are the largest cold freshwater springs in the southern hemisphere, releasing a staggering 3,000 gallons of water per second. Close to the town of Tanaka, a 1km-loop trail threads through the forest and across streams to a platform suspended above the still, crystalline water, where you gaze down into a blue-tinged underwater forest. Please note that swimming is forbidden here due to the springs’ spiritual significance to the Maori people.

Tongariro National Park, Manawatu-Whanganui

The epicenter of New Zealand’s volcanic wonders, Tongariro was the country’s first national park and won Unesco World Heritage status several decades ago. Crowned by three mighty volcanoes – Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe, and Tongariro, which are part of the Pacific Ocean's Ring of Fire – the park encompasses a phenomenal landscape of craters, old lava flows, strange emerald lakes, and steaming vents. New Zealand’s best day hike – the Tongariro Alpine Crossing – takes travelers to the highlights.

Tree Church, Waikato

Hidden among bucolic country gardens in the little hamlet of Ohaupo on New Zealand's North Island is a natural chapel formed from entwined trees guided by human hands. This living, breathing church is a monument to nature surrounded by mature oak and maple trees. It is open to visitors and can even host weddings of up to 100 people. The surrounding gardens include a hedge labyrinth and Monet-inspired pond.

Waitomo Caves, Waikato

A network of subterranean caves and rivers snakes beneath Waitomo’s verdant hills in New Zealand’s north-east, harbouring magical, glowing caverns. Tours by boat and on foot take visitors deep underground to witness the phenomena, with thousands of glow worms lighting the cave ceiling like a sea of white-blue stars. Above ground, the area has more not-to-be-missed natural marvels, including the beautiful Marokopa Falls and limestone Mangapohue Natural Bridge.

White Island, Bay of Plenty

New Zealand’s most active cone volcano, the imposing White Island (also known as Whakaari) forms part of the Pacific Ring of Fire and sits 30 miles offshore from North Island’s east coast. A sudden, explosive eruption in 2019 effectively ended guided tours to the island, but scenic flights over its steaming crater, sulfurous vents, and acid lakes are still available, taking off from nearby Whakatane, Rotorua, or Tauranga.

Bridal Veil Falls, Waikato

Picture-perfect Bridal Veil Falls is ensconced in a region of the North Island known for its natural attractions, including the must-see Waitomo Caves. A classic beauty dropping 180 feet over a hard volcanic lip into a deep pool framed by lush greenery, the falls are the perfect place to immerse in nature, with walkways leading through the forest and along the Pakoka River to viewing points at its top and base.

Waiotapu, Rotorua

This geothermal wonderland powered by Earth’s core was dubbed ‘Hellsgate’ by famous playwright George Bernard Shaw, due to its steaming landscape of colorful sulfurous springs. The highlight – Champagne Pool – appears like a giant artist’s palette of electric blue, orange and yellow. Surrounded by bubbling mud cauldrons, neon-green ponds, and spraying pools, visitors can lose themselves in the surreal scene by following the secure tracks around the site. Arrive before 10:15am to catch Lady Knox Geyser’s dramatic daily eruption.
