What happens if my cruise line changes my itinerary or ship?

Ashley Kosciolek

Imagine that Caribbean cruise you've been looking forward to suddenly becomes a voyage to Canada and New England instead, or that the ship you booked isn't the one on which you'll actually be sailing. It's not common, but it's possible for a cruise line to make changes to your sailing after you've booked or even after you've set sail -- which is why it's so important to be flexible when you're a passenger.

Here, I'll walk you through what happens when a cruise line alters itineraries or shuffles vessels to new locations, what you're owed if changes occur and some steps you can take to protect your booking.

My cruise line changed my itinerary

disney cruise line itinerary changes

Why it could happen

There are many reasons why a cruise itinerary might change. They include inclement weather that forces a ship to avoid dangerous conditions, medical emergencies that require your vessel to divert to the nearest port of call, port closures, ship mechanical issues, scheduling conflicts and a host of other causes.

What to expect if it does

Because itinerary changes often involve time, money and a big logistical and customer service nightmare, cruise lines will do all they can to avoid making alterations on a whim. If major tweaks are necessary due to foreseen events, they're usually made well in advance, allowing passengers to change their plans if they wish.

In those cases, passengers can expect to receive notice through their travel agents or via correspondence (likely email) from the cruise line.

In cases where last-minute changes are necessary, passengers will either be notified through one of the methods mentioned above or through public address announcements or in-cabin letters if the sailing is already underway.

Itinerary changes can range from minor to sweeping. If it's the former, you might see the ports from your original itinerary show up in a different order. You could also see one port skipped and replaced with another or with a sea day.

In the most extreme cases — particularly those involving tropical storms during hurricane season — I've seen entire regions scrapped and replaced with something else. An example is when a Canada and New England voyage replaces one that had been scheduled to visit the Caribbean.

What am I owed?

Per the terms of the cruise contract to which you consent before sailing, cruise lines do not owe you compensation if they alter your itinerary. If changes are made, you will be refunded for any shore excursions you booked through the cruise line that were to take place in the ports you're skipping. (Check with your tour provider directly if you've booked a third-party excursion.)

In most cases, you will also be refunded for the taxes and fees levied by the missed ports. However, if alternative ports are substituted, you might not get your money back.

Cruise lines sometimes offer compensation as a goodwill gesture, but you shouldn't expect it. I've seen it range from a small amount of onboard credit or partial future cruise credits to full refunds and, in extreme cases, full refunds plus free future cruises.

If the itinerary change is major and announced prior to your sailing, a cruise line might give booked passengers the opportunity to cancel or reschedule their cruise without incurring the usual penalties.

My cruise line changed my ship

disney cruise line itinerary changes

As with itinerary changes, ship changes can be made for a number of reasons. However, they're most common when a cruise line releases new deployments for its vessels, causing several of them to shift to new home ports or regions.

The swapping of a ship can also be necessary at times when a vessel is scheduled to go in for routine dry-dock maintenance or if it experiences major mechanical malfunctions that prevent it from sailing safely or at a speed that allows it to complete its scheduled itineraries with regularity.

Cruise lines don't take the switching of hardware lightly and will avoid it whenever possible. Because the reasons for ship changes are generally more widespread, sometimes causing a ripple throughout the entire fleet, they're more rare than itinerary changes.

Because dry-docks and redeployments are almost always planned events, passengers usually receive plenty of notice. If this happens to you, you should be notified by your travel agent or the cruise line.

Vessel changes will almost never take place after a cruise has begun unless there are major mechanical problems or some sort of evacuation is needed.

Although some cruise lines might owe you compensation if a ship swap takes place due to a mechanical breakdown where the line is found to be at fault, it's unlikely that you'll be compensated for a vessel change prior to your scheduled voyage.

Again, cruise lines might choose to compensate passengers in a number of ways, ranging from onboard credit to free cruises, but it shouldn't be an expectation.

The chance of your receiving something for your troubles is dependent on several factors, including how far in advance the changes were made, the reasons they were made and the ship to which your booking is being moved. (If, for example, you were booked on the line's newest vessel, and suddenly you find yourself on its oldest, the line is more likely to offer you something to offset the lack of onboard amenities for which you originally paid.)

How can I protect my booking?

disney cruise line itinerary changes

Stay informed

For starters, it's a good idea to book your sailing through a travel agent , who will serve as a point of contact between you and the cruise line if something goes wrong during your trip. The agent can advocate on your behalf so you don't have to deal with the headache yourself, and will be able to relay information from the cruise line to you if alterations are made to your ship or the places you'll visit.

The best way to know what your options are when you book any cruise is to read the fine print. It's available in your cruise contract, which you can access during the pre-cruise online check-in process. It's tedious, but the contract outlines what your rights are and the conditions under which you are owed a refund by your cruise line in the event of changes to the voyage you booked.

Another excellent source of information is your cruise line's cancellation policy. The rules for what happens when a cruise line cancels a sailing are often different from those that apply if you, the passenger, opt to cancel . Familiarizing yourself with both of these will help you to better understand your options and entitlements.

Consider travel insurance

Travel insurance is another way to protect your vacation investment. I recommend a policy that's purchased from a third party (not the cruise line) and includes "cancel for any reason," trip interruption and trip cancellation coverage.

If your cruise line changes something about your sailing and you no longer wish to go, a "cancel for any reason" travel insurance policy can help you to recoup any costs that can't be fully refunded by your cruise line when you cancel. A regular insurance policy would not cover costs for a trip you choose to cancel because you don't like the ship or itinerary changes.

However, most insurance plans can help you to be reimbursed for all or part of what you paid if changes to your sailing result in delays.

Note that you will also have to insure other travel arrangements linked to the trip, such as pre- or post-cruise flights and hotel stays, if you want them to be covered.

Bottom line

The best approach to take with any cruise is to know that, although it's unlikely, anything can change at any time, and you generally won't be compensated.

If you have your heart set on visiting a particular place, it's best to plan a land-based trip to that location. Also make sure that you understand the cancellation policies and fine print for the cruise you're booking, as well as those for any third-party excursions you're booking, in case your sailing is altered.

Above all, try to make the most of your sailing, whether it's the one you expected or something a bit different. Remember: You're still on a cruise.

Disney Fantasy Itinerary Change and Mechanical Issues; Guests Offered Full Refunds

Disney Fantasy Port Canaveral

The Disney Fantasy cruise on September 9, 2023, has changed its itinerary due to Tropical Storm Lee. Disney sent out letters to the affected passengers.

We have been closely monitoring Tropical Storm Lee, which is currently moving through the Atlantic Ocean and is predicted to become a hurricane later this week. Based on the storm’s current forecast track, Bermuda and the seas around Bermuda will be potentially impacted over the next week and a half, making it unsuitable for cruise travel. As a result, we have made modifications to the itinerary that bypass Bermuda, but adds Cozumel, Mexico, and George Town, Grand Cayman, as well as a second visit to Castaway Cay. The revised itinerary is below: Saturday, September 9, Port Canaveral, Florida Sunday, September 10: Day at Sea Monday, September 11, Cozumel, Mexico (previously Day at Sea) Tuesday, September 12, George Town, Grand Cayman (previously Bermuda) Wednesday, September 13, Day at Sea (previously Bermuda) Thursday, September 14, Disney Castaway Cay (previously Day at Sea) Friday, September 15, Disney Castaway Cay Saturday, September 16, Nassau, The Bahamas Sunday, September 17, Port Canaveral, Florida To show our appreciation, we will be providing an onboard credit of up to $200 for each stateroom to use during this sailing. This credit will automatically appear on the stateroom account and can be used onboard towards the purchase of shipboard services, merchandise, food and beverages, or Port Adventures. Additionally, each reservation will receive a 20% discount* on a future cruise reservation taken prior to September 9, 2025.

Last night, the guests on the current sailing were informed that the Disney Fantasy had a technical challenge and they would miss their stop at Castaway Cay. Guests received $250 OBC and 25% off a future sailing taken before September 2, 2025.

I apologize for such a late message; however, I have some important information to share with you. Earlier this evening we experienced an engine technical challenge. This has resulted in a loss of speed. There is no cause for any concern and our safety is in no way compromised. Due to our loss of speed, we will not be able to make our call at Castaway Cay and we will proceed directly to Port Canaveral to arrive as per our original schedule. A letter detailing more information will be delivered to your stateroom overnight. Please continue to enjoy your evening. Thank you for your understanding.

Disney Fantasy Castaway Cay

Dear Valued Guests, As we shared earlier, due to a technical issue with the ship’s propulsion system, the Disney Fantasy is sailing at a reduced rate of speed. Regrettably, it is necessary to adjust our itinerary and we will no longer be able to visit Castaway Cay on Friday. We know that this is disappointing news and apologize for the modification to our itinerary. To show our appreciation for your understanding, we will be providing an onboard credit of $250 for each stateroom to use during this sailing. This credit will automatically appear on the stateroom account and can be used onboard towards the purchase of shipboard services, merchandise, food and beverages, or Port Adventures. Additionally, each reservation will receive a 25% discount* on a future cruise taken prior to September 2, 2025. Port fees for Castaway Cay will be refunded to your original form of payment, as well as any pre-reserved Port Adventures at Castaway Cay. We appreciate your understanding and are dedicated to ensuring that you and your family have an enjoyable rest of your vacation onboard the Disney Fantasy. Sincerely, Cast & Crew Disney Cruise Line * To redeem the 25% future cruise discount, please contact us at 407-566-3457 or 800-951-3532 or your travel agent after September 21, 2023, and reference your current reservation number to receive the discount on a future cruise; the future cruise must commence within 24 months of September 2, 2023. This offer is non-transferable, has no cash value, and is valid for only those Guests who are on this September 2, 2023, voyage. Future cruise discount is subiect to blackout dates and is not valid for and excludes holiday and maiden voyage sailings. Contact us or our travel agent for blackout dates and other restrictions. All reservations are subject to Disney Cruise Line terms and conditions.

Loungers Castaway Cay

Tonight, the guests sailing on September 9, 2023, received emails informing them that their cruise may have additional changes to the itinerary, and they have been offered a full refund. Disney will provide an update as soon as possible, but that may not be until guests board the ship tomorrow.

We are writing to provide additional information regarding your September 9, 2023, sailing aboard the Disney Fantasy. Earlier this week, we communicated a necessary modification to your original itinerary as a result of potential impacts from Hurricane Lee. Yesterday evening, the Disney Fantasy experienced a technical issue with the propulsion system that is causing the ship to sail at a reduced rate of speed. There is no impact on the maneuverability of the ship, or on the safety of our Guests and Crew. Until the ship arrives to Port Canaveral and repairs can be completed, we are uncertain if there will be additional impacts to your itinerary. We will provide you an update as soon as we can, but that may not be until after you board the ship tomorrow. Should you have questions or wish to cancel your sailing before boarding for a full refund, please contact your travel agent.

Disney Dream 4-night Itinerary Change Sailings: 9/13, 9/20, 9/27, 10/4

Dear Guest,

All of us at Disney Cruise Line hope you and your family are staying well. We are reaching out with important information about your upcoming 4-night sailing aboard the Disney Dream.

As you may know, the health and safety of our Guests, Cast Members and Crew Members is a top priority. We are resuming sailing in a gradual, phased approach that emphasizes multiple layers of health and safety measures, developed in consideration of guidance from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other medical experts.

As part of our phased approach, we have temporarily modified the itineraries of select Disney Dream sailings to include an additional day at our private island, Castaway Cay instead of visiting Nassau, The Bahamas. Your revised sailing itinerary is below.

Monday – Port Canaveral, Florida Tuesday – Day At Sea Wednesday – Disney Castaway Cay Thursday – Disney Castaway Cay Friday – Port Canaveral, Florida

For sailings to the Bahamas beginning September 3 until November 1, 2021, The Bahamas will require that all cruise ship passengers ages 12 and older be fully vaccinated in order for a ship to be allowed entry into any of its cruise ports, including private islands like Disney Castaway Cay. To comply with this new requirement, all Guests ages 12 and older on your sailing must be fully vaccinated to board the ship.

Guests must provide proof of vaccination by uploading their vaccination card to the  Safe Passage by Inspire website  no later than 24 hours before their sailing. Guests under the age of 12 must still provide proof of a negative lab-based COVID-19 PCR test taken between 5 days and 24 hours prior to the sail date by uploading their test results to the  Safe Passage by Inspire website . They will also be required to undergo a second COVID-19 PCR test administered by Inspire Diagnostics at the terminal prior to boarding.

If you have not done so already, please download the  Disney Cruise Line Navigator app  or go online to make advance reservations that are necessary for participating in youth activities or reserve premium experiences like beverage tastings and dinner at Palo. At this time, we are still finalizing some of the onboard activity offerings and Port Adventures for your sailing and encourage you to continue checking back as new inventory becomes available.

We look forward to welcoming you aboard soon!

Don’t Be Blindsided By These Disney Cruise Line Changes

By Sara McOmber Leave a Comment

If you’re going on a Disney Cruise soon, you might have noticed that there have been LOTS of changes over the past year or so.

disney cruise line itinerary changes

Disney Dream

Policies for health and safety , ship itineraries , activities on board , and more have changed a few different times. So we can understand if you’re a little unsure of what to expect on your next cruise. To help out, we pulled together all the recent changes so that you’re prepared for your upcoming vacation on the sea.

First, we’re going to look at each Disney cruise ship and where it’s currently going . Then we’ll see what the current schedule is for reservations and bookings — AKA what you need to do and when you need to do it before you set sail. We’ll check out the current policies in relation to COVID-19 and other health and safety rules. And finally, we’ll round up all the other changes (big or small) that weren’t included in one of those categories. That’s a lot to cover, so let’s get started!

Disney Cruise Ships (And Where They Sail)

All four of Disney’s existing cruise ships are currently sailing, and a brand new one ( the Disney  Wish ) is going to set sail starting this summer. Its official debut will be on July 14th, 2022 .

Disney Magic

The Disney Magic is currently sailing out of Miami and New Orleans , and it’s heading to the Bahamas, Western Caribbean, and Mexico for 4-, 5-, 6-, and 7-night cruises .

disney cruise line itinerary changes

4-night Cruises to the Bahamas include stops in Nassau, Bahamas, and Castaway Cay (Disney’s private island). On the Western Caribbean itineraries, there are stops in Cozumel and Progreso, Mexico, and Castaway Cay . One 6-night cruise to the Western Caribbean also stops in Costa Maya, Mexico .

disney cruise line itinerary changes

A couple of the cruises to the Western Caribbean stop in George Town, Grand Cayman , instead of Cozumel. The Disney  Magic has also started sailing out of Galveston, TX , on some Western Caribbean cruises.

Later this year (beginning in July), the  Magic will sail in Europe out of Barcelona, Dover, Copenhagen, and other European cities.

Disney Fantasy

The Disney  Fantasy sails out of Port Canaveral, FL , on 4- to 9-night cruises to Castaway Cay or the Caribbean.

7-night Western Caribbean cruises onboard the Fantasy also stop in Falmouth, Jamaica . This ship will also have a few special events, like Pixar Day at Sea or Halloween on the High Seas.

Disney Wonder

The Disney  Wonder has a lot of different cruises, including some out of San Diego, CA, or Vancouver, Canada .

disney cruise line itinerary changes

The longest season of San Diego sailings yet  has also been announced for the Disney Wonder!  3-, 4-, 5-, and 7-day cruises  to  Baja, Mexico, and the Mexican Riviera  will begin in the  fall of 2022 and will extend into early 2023.  Ports will include  Mazatlan, Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta, and Ensenada, as well as Catalina Island.

Beginning in May of this year, the Wonder will take guests on Alaskan cruises , which depart from Vancouver and stop at Dawes Glacier, Alaska; Skagway, Alaska; Juneau, Alaska; and Ketchikan, Alaska.

The Disney  Dream sails out of Port Canaveral, FL , on 3- and 4-night cruises with stops in Castaway Cay and Nassau, Bahamas .

Ready to Get Cruising?

Beginning this year, the Dream will also sail out of Miami for Western Caribbean cruises with stops in Cozumel, Mexico, and possibly George Town, Grand Cayman (depending on the length of the cruise).

Disney Wish

The Disney  Wish is a brand new cruise ship. This ship’s maiden voyage will take place on July 14th, 2022 . You can already book your spot on this cruise ship for sailings this year.

disney cruise line itinerary changes

The  Wish will sail on 3- and 4-night cruises to the Bahamas , stopping at Nassau and Castaway Cay .

disney cruise line itinerary changes

This new ship has all kinds of exciting new features, like new dining experiences , activities , and the first-ever Disney attraction at sea — the AquaMouse.

What to do before you set sail.

As soon as you’ve booked your cruise, take a look at the online checklist that can be found on the Disney Cruise website . This checklist is a good reminder of what you need to do before your trip, as well as requirements for embarkation day. Also, remember to download the Disney Cruise Line Navigator app on your smartphone.

Click Here to Learn How to Use the Disney Cruise Checklist

Up to 120 days before your cruise (depending on your Castaway Cay membership, if you have one), you can make reservations for certain activities on board the ship.  First-time guests can make these reservations 75 days before they set sail.

disney cruise line itinerary changes

©Disney Cruise Line

Spa appointments, some character meet and greets, babysitting, and other activities can be reserved at this time. You can also make reservations for restaurants besides the ones that are already scheduled in your itinerary (like adults-only dining).

disney cruise line itinerary changes

Activities that require reservations on board ©Disney Cruise Line

You can do this online by signing into your account, finding the “My Plans” section, and choosing activities for each day .

disney cruise line itinerary changes

Or you can also make reservations once you’re on board , but the earlier you make reservations, the more likely you are to get the time and activity you want most.

disney cruise line itinerary changes

You will need to check in to your cruise online before you embark . (This isn’t new — just a reminder.) You can check in beginning 30 days before your trip . Part of the check-in process is choosing a port time , which is when you’ll be able to board the ship on the day you set sail.

disney cruise line itinerary changes

Disney Cruise Line Terminal

You’ll want to check in as soon as you can , because then you can choose the earliest possible port time . An earlier port time means more time to enjoy on the cruise ship! And of course, make sure to double check your packing list to be certain you’re prepared for your voyage.

COVID-19 Guidelines and Changes

Some of the biggest changes are the new health and safety measures on board all the ships. This is an overview of all the adjustments that you’ll need to know about:

Guests 5 years and older must be vaccinated . These guests must provide proof of vaccination. Note that “fully vaccinated” in this case means that someone has received all necessary doses of the vaccine at least two weeks before they arrive at the cruise ship.

disney cruise line itinerary changes

Guests 4 years and younger (or others not eligible for a COVID-19 vaccine) must provide a negative COVID-19 test taken between 3 days and 24 hours of sailing. Proof of vaccination or of a negative test must be uploaded to the Safe Passage website before you’ll be allowed to embark.

disney cruise line itinerary changes

Everyone (vaccinated or not) must take a COVID-19 test at the terminal before they board the ship . If anyone in a party tests positive for COVID, no one in the party may board the ship. Guests will also be required to take a COVID-19 test on the day before disembarking the ship. There is an exception to the testing rules for those who have recently recovered from COVID-19.

Learn about the exception to the COVID-19 testing requirements here.

disney cruise line itinerary changes

Recent policy changes make face masks optional on most DCL sailings.

For sailings out of US ports after March 10th, 2022, face masks will be optional at most indoor locations on Disney cruise ships.

disney cruise line itinerary changes

Masks also will not be required outdoors or on Castaway Cay.

Read more about the changing face mask requirements here.

What else is different.

The changes to itineraries and health and safety measures are the biggest differences. But you’ll see a few more changes before and during your trip. Here are some of the ones you’ll see.

There will only be one party per table during dining . Previously, parties would sometimes share tables and rotate through the restaurants together. Now, servers will still rotate with their groups, but different parties will not be seated at the same table together.

disney cruise line itinerary changes

Tiana’s Place on Disney Wonder

Self-serve food may instead be served by Cast Members . Although self-serve buffets have returned to the Disney parks , as of writing there will not be self-serve station on board the cruise ships.

disney cruise line itinerary changes

Slushy on a Cruise

Princess Tea Parties are available on the cruise ships , but guests will be seated one party per table and the princesses will be physically distanced throughout the experience.

Activities and Entertainment

And speaking of those modified character experiences , Disney has said that the up-close meet and greets will not resume, but you will still get to see characters in a physically distanced way . Based on some of the pictures, it seems like you can get fairly close to them sometimes, but you can’t touch or ask for autographs.

disney cruise line itinerary changes

Pluto on the Disney Wonder

Characters will also sometimes appear during meals, on the decks, or at Castaway Cay.

disney cruise line itinerary changes

Inside theaters (like the Buena Vista Theater and Funnel Vision), guests will be seated with physical distancing measures . There will also not be deck parties on board the cruise ships.

disney cruise line itinerary changes

Fireworks will be available on two different nights, and guests will be assigned a night to watch the show . (You’ll be able to see which night is your fireworks night before you set sail.)

disney cruise line itinerary changes

Pools, water slides, and other activities will operate at limited capacity and have specific queue locations.

disney cruise line itinerary changes

Ahhh those pools!

Most itineraries on a Disney cruise ship offer one Broadway-style show. This show is repeated during the cruise with limited capacity, and seating will be physically distanced (like at the movie theaters). Like the fireworks show, guests will be assigned one time to watch this show.

disney cruise line itinerary changes

The “it’s a small world” Nursery is unavailable at this time . Some other activities are also unavailable, like ping pong, shuffleboard, and basketball . Parents will need to register their kids for activities at places like the  Oceaneer Club and Lab . Teen and tween clubs are available with no reservations.

A virtual queue will be used for debarkation at all ports of call. This queue operates on the Disney Cruise Line Navigator app. This includes at all ports of call and at the end of your trip.

More Health and Safety Measures

At Castaway Cay, masks are not required at any outdoor locations . For some indoor areas (on trams, in restrooms, and inside gift shops) masks will be required. Also, there’s a new cavalcade of Disney characters on the island!

disney cruise line itinerary changes

Castaway Cay in 2020

Any children who are not vaccinated (4 years old and younger) must have a reserved Port Adventure in order to disembark at ports of call. Port Adventures include scheduled excursions through the Disney Cruise Line, and you can reserve these before you set sail or by talking to a Cast Member once you’re on board .

And that’s it for our review of the Disney Cruise Line changes that you’ll need to be aware of before you set sail! Keep following DFB for more updates, because these policies have changed a lot in the past and are still subject to change.

You won't be bored on a party cruise.

The magic of a cruise vacation is created with culinary delights, exotic ports of call, comfortable accommodations, carefully curated spaces and, of course, parties. These onboard celebrations can take many forms: large dance parties and quiet lounges, family-friendly and adults-only, adrenaline-pumping and relaxing activities, elegant and come-as-you-are events, and entire ships transformed into themed cruises .

Prepare for fun times on the following ships hosting the best party cruises at sea.

Royal Caribbean: Oasis of the Seas

Explore the eastern and western Caribbean aboard Oasis of the Seas , one of the largest cruise ships in the world. On this 6,771-passenger vessel, 18 decks of fun and 2,109 crew members await your next voyage.

  • Bionic Bar: For late-night parties where "mixology meets technology," order cocktails from unexpected bartenders: robots! These two specialized tech creations are well-versed in classic alcoholic and nonalcoholic cocktails, and they can also mix a bespoke drink designed by you.
  • Adrenaline-pumping amenities: Get ready for day and night thrills at four separate venues. Ripcord by iFly is billed as the only skydiving simulator at sea; North Star allows cruisers to snap stunning photos from the tallest viewing deck found on any cruise ship; Sky Pad provides a virtual reality experience while patrons jump on a bungee trampoline; and the Ultimate Abyss, named the tallest slide at sea, plunges 10 stories down.
  • Surprise events: Scattered throughout the ship are several surprise activities that pop up among the scheduled itinerary of events. Join a toga party; boogie at a disco brigade; dress for a masquerade party; or transport back in time at an '80s-inspired extravaganza.

Then, see everyone again at the open-air Mega Deck Party under the stars on the Lido Deck, complete with more dancing, games and giveaways.
  • RedFrog Rum Bar and BlueIguana Tequila Bar: Taste the flavors of the tropics at these two popular venues for drinks, music and good times. Choose from a chill menu of cocktails and specialty beer while you stay cool by the pool.
  • Fun and games: If parties with your friends include spirited competition, this is your ship. In addition to showing off your skills on the basketball court and obstacle-filled mini golf course, play cornhole, sign up for the scavenger hunt and compete in art games. Then, try your luck gambling in the casino, playing bingo, and joining the "Deal or No Deal" onboard game show.
