Tokyo to Sendai: The Fastest and Cheapest Ways of Getting There

Situated about 350km northeast of Tokyo, Sendai is the capital of Miyagi Prefecture and the gateway to the Tohoku region .

Sendai Pageant of Starlight winter illumination

Though over a million people call Sendai home, the city is one of the most under-appreciated in Japan. It’s known as the transit point for trips to Matsushima—the famous bay of pines, as well as many other scenic spots. However, Sendai itself has plenty to offer travelers, including giant Buddhist statues , shrines, temples, shopping, historical sites, museums and more. The summer Tanabata festival is one of the best nationwide, and the way the zelkova-lined boulevards  light up in winter is metcha magical. Here’s how to get from Tokyo to Sendai to see all the things for yourself.

Note:  If this is not your only domestic trip while you’re here, buying a  Japan Rail Pass  (JR Pass) will probably work out to be the most economical way to get from A to B and then Y and Z. This discount rail ticket gives you virtually unlimited bullet train rides for 7, 14 or 21 days. If you’re taking a quick jaunt from Tokyo to Sendai, then zooming down to Kyoto or  Hiroshima , for example, the pass will more than pay for itself.

Just doing the Tokyo to Sendai route? One-way Shinkansen tickets are available. So are buses and other cheapo options. Details follow!

Shinkansen (bullet trains)

tokyo to sendai bullet train

The ride from Tokyo to Sendai is a short one on the Tohoku Shinkansen —you’re looking at 90-120 minutes, no transfers required. The Hayabusa and Komachi bullet trains are the fastest options, with the Yamabiko on the slower side. All of the models can be taken with the JR Pass  and most regional rail passes too. There are a couple of trains every hour, making for easy travel planning.

Anpanman Station at Sendai Station

In peak season, which includes spring and summer vac, Golden Week and the New Year holidays, a regular one-way ticket costs about ¥ 11,400 on the Hayabusa and Komachi. It’s a few hundred yen cheaper on the Yamabiko, or if you go in the off season.

You can save around ¥ 700 yen by opting for unreserved seating ( jiyuuseki ), but this might see you standing for the entire journey—especially during peak season. If you are traveling with kids, are carting around a ton of baggage or just aren’t into that vertical vibe, you’re better off booking a reserved seat ( shiteiseki ) rather. You can reserve seats easily in advance, both online and at JR ticket offices.

Discount options

The best way to lower the cost of a bullet train ride is to buy a  Japan Rail Pass  (if you’re a short-term visitor), or one of the regional rail passes aimed at tourists. As mentioned above, it’s also cheaper to travel outside of peak season, and to risk unreserved seating.

Domestic airlines

Observation deck at the Sendai International Airport

It is possible to jet over from Tokyo to Sendai—the airport is a simple 25-minute ride from Sendai Station. There are two direct flights a day from Tokyo, taking just 1 hour and 15 minutes from takeoff to landing. Sometimes you can scoop bargain tickets, but before booking, it’s best to work out how much of a schlep getting from your accommodation to Narita Airport (your departure point) will be. Sometimes the airport transfers can add up–in terms of time and money—to make flying a real hassle. Other times, it’s a breeze.

Highway buses

An expressway bus departing from Shinjuku Expressway bus terminal in the rain

Perhaps the cheapest way of getting from Tokyo to Sendai is taking a highway bus—you can snag a one-way ticket for as low as ¥ 2,000 . Most buses leave Tokyo late at night, rolling into Sendai around 5 or 6am the next morning. Have a look at Kosoku Bus  to see what’s available from Tokyo to Sendai on your travel dates.

Local trains

train that goes from Sendai Airport to Sendai City

A fun (read: really slow) alternative for those who are in Japan during  Seishun 18 ticket  season is to take only regular JR trains from Tokyo to Sendai. Timed to coincide with the spring, summer and winter holidays of universities in Japan, this super-cheap seasonal pass allows five days (consecutive or not) of unlimited travel on local and rapid JR trains for ¥ 11,850 . It’s perfectly permissible to share the pass among two to five people; this means that, in theory anyway, five people could get all the way to Sendai for the sum total of ¥ 2,370 each.

Of course, taking only slow trains does complicate the route, so before grabbing your Seishun pass and hopping aboard the next train east, it’s a good idea to go through the transfers and times on  Hyperdia  (deselect everything but Japan Railways and local). When we looked it up, the Tokyo to Sendai route seemed to require roughly six hours and five transfers. Not too bad, actually!

Summary of transport options from Tokyo to Sendai

The  fastest, easiest and most convenient option   is the Shinkansen, especially if you have a  Japan Rail Pass  or are in a rush. The cheapest option  is a highway bus, followed by local trains—but these take a lot more time!

If highway tolls don’t give you the heebie-jeebies, you could also  rent a car  and drive from Tokyo to Sendai. However, unless you’re traveling in a large group, this is not a very economical way of shuttling between the two cities. Trains or buses are recommended.

Pro tip:  Once you’re in Sendai, pick up a one-day Sendai Area Pass or two-day Sendai Marugoto Pass for discounts on trains and buses in and between Sendai, Matsushima and Yamadera .

Getting around

The most convenient way for tourists to travel around Sendai is by Loople Sendai, a loop bus connecting most of the city's sites of interest. Sendai also has some JR train lines, two subway lines and a bus network (operated by Sendai City and Miyagi Kotsu).

The Loople Sendai is a bus service for tourists that runs in a one-hour, clockwise loop around the city. It stops at Zuihoden , Sendai City Museum, Aoba Castle and other sightseeing spots and departs from Sendai Station every 20-30 minutes from 9:00 to 16:00. The fare is 260 yen per ride or 630 yen for a 1-day pass, which is not valid on other buses in the city. A 1-day pass for the Loople and the city's two subway lines is available for 920 yen.

Sendai has two subway lines, the Namboku Line (running north-south) and the Tozai Line (running east-west) that meet each other at Sendai Station. The Tozai Line offers access to the base of Aoba Castle , but otherwise the subway lines are not particularly useful for tourists.

From Sendai Station, the JR Senzan Line runs north of the city center and provides access to Rinnoji Temple , while the JR Senseki Line runs to Matsushima , 35 kilometers northeast of the city center. The one way trip to Matsushima takes 40 minutes and costs 420 yen.

Sendai Airport is located about 20 kilometers southeast of the city center and can be accessed directly by train (15-25 minutes, 660 yen) from Sendai Station.

Sendai's local IC card, the Icsca card, as well as Suica and nine other IC cards can be used on virtually all means of public transportation in the Greater Sendai area, including subways, buses, the Loople Sendai bus, JR trains and the trains to Sendai Airport.

Both of them provide unlimited use of the Loople bus, the subway, most Sendai City buses, certain Miyagi Kotsu buses and JR trains in and around Sendai, including the trains to Matsushima , Yamadera and the airport , and the buses to nearby hot spring resorts:

  • Sendai Area Pass (1 day, 1320 yen) The Sendai Area Pass is valid on one calendar day and can be used only by foreign tourists, but not by residents of Japan. The pass can be purchased at JR Sendai Station.

How far is it from Tokyo to Sendai?

Travelling by train, the distance from Tokyo to Sendai is 72 miles. Before setting on for a train journey, have a look at the map to find out what tourist spots or landmarks you will pass by – maybe they are worth a quick stop?

How long does it take to get from Tokyo to Sendai by Train?

Travel time from Tokyo to Sendai is estimated to be about 2h 18m. Trains ensure the fastest time to travel by land. As normally there is no congestion, the speed of travel is more or less constant and stops at train stations are rather short, train is almost always one of the quickest and safest ways to get from Tokyo and Sendai.

The most important thing that may affect train travel time is the type of train. Ordinary trains travel at a speed of about 40 mph or 65 km/h to 65 mph or 105 km/h. Some intercity trains with shorter distances between stations run slower than 40 mph. Even with these low speeds, it can still be faster than commuting by car, bus or taxi.

The speed of express trains can reach up to 100 mph or 160 km/h. Modern high-speed trains can run at speeds exceeding 250 mph or 400 km/h.

These speeds of travel together with relatively short stops between stations can greatly shorten the duration of your trip.

How much does it cost to get from Tokyo to Sendai by Train?

Some trains feature different types of carriages, seats and berths offering various amenities and level of comfort.

Basic passenger trains which are often non-air-conditioned and have wooden, hard or old seats are normally cheap. Premium or luxury trains and coaches have a higher ticket price but are equipped with air-conditioning, toilets, and large soft seats with sufficient legroom to make train rides comfortable.

Best-Rated Companies for this Route

Unlike buses or taxis which have numerous companies offering their services, train service is usually offered by just one major company in each country. As railway service requires a large amount of infrastructure, most railway companies are government-owned and are a part of the national transport system.

One of the best advantages of travelling by train is that railway stations are often conveniently located within or very near major cities and urban areas. Immediately on arrival to their destination, travellers find themselves in close proximity to important facilities like hotels, supermarkets, and hospitals.

If you travel with a lot of bags and luggage, trains are your best option. Luggage weight limits on trains are rather flexible and allow you to carry multiple bags with you.

Special or luxury trains feature sufficient legroom which allows you to stretch your legs and relax. In comfort and space these train seats can be compared to business class airplane seats.

Similar to buses, trains can provide a variety of amenities to make your travel more comfortable and enjoyable. Modern trains have WIFI service, a snack counter and a drinking bar. Onboard toilets can be a life saver for travellers with queasy stomachs.

Lastly, unlike buses and other overland means of transport, trains are very rarely involved in accidents.
