Borrowing its name from Edgar G. Ulmer’s low-budget hard-boiled classic and a key plot device from one of Hitchcock’s finest, Detour is a movie built from unabashed nods toward a thriller lexicon. But even with three of the big screen’s most dynamic up-and-comers at its center, there’s no flesh and blood beneath all the posturing. Christopher Smith’s self-consciously stylish genre homage finally feels like a baby film noir, playacting without the requisite bone-deep dread.

British writer-director Smith ( Creep ) uses a  Strangers on a Train riff to set the dark and twisty road trip in motion. In the moody neon light of a bar, Los Angeles law student Harper ( Tye Sheridan, Mud ) meets loudmouthed criminal Johnny (Emory Cohen, Brooklyn ), and the conversation drifts to Harper’s desire to teach a lesson to his despised stepfather, Vincent (Stephen Moyer). While Harper’s mother lies in a coma in a hospital bed, Vincent is about to leave for one of his frequent flights to Las Vegas to visit a girlfriend.

Release date: Jan 20, 2017

Unlike the eager killer in the Highsmith /Hitchcock story, Johnny isn’t offering to trade murders with his new acquaintance. He’s in it for the cold hard cash, and he names his price. But while Harper believes — or professes to believe — that their talk of solutions to the stepfather problem is theoretical, Johnny shows up at his door the next morning, ready to hit Sin City. For reasons that are gradually revealed, Harper eventually agrees to the trip, insisting they take Vincent’s Mustang.

With Johnny at the wheel of the muscle car, they head into the noir terrain of the California/Nevada desert — with DP Christopher Ross subbing Cape Town, South Africa, locations to striking effect. Less successful is the indulgence in skewed angles and overuse of split screens, the visual tricks more of a distraction than an expression of theme or character.

Riding shotgun, in more ways than one, is Cherry ( Bel Powley , The Diary of a Teenage Girl ), a sullen and mostly silent strip-club dancer who’s Johnny’s reluctant companion. The question of whether she’s his girlfriend, his partner in crime, the hooker to his pimp, or all three, is left open to interpretation for much of the film, as are the details surrounding the knife slash across her cheek. But she makes it clear that she views Harper as a naïve kid who’s in over his head, and when they’re alone, she warns him to leave.

Harper’s friend back home (Jared Abrahamson ) provides a bit of comic relief as things get more complicated on the road, the chief complication being a CHP officer ( Gbenga Akinnagbe ) who threatens the Vegas-bound trio’s headway. If the movie’s title refers to anything other than Ulmer’s 1945 flick — which is glimpsed on a TV screen — it’s the requisite side trip to a criminal sociopath (John Lynch, of the BBC series The Fall ). His name is Frank, he’s a creditor and abusive mentor of sorts to Johnny, and though he’s an American psycho, he uses the British pronunciation of “cretin.”

The drama grows less stilted as it proceeds, if only because Powley gets to flex some acting muscles that lend a bit of human intrigue. There’s compelling subtlety in the way Cherry sizes up every situation. Weighing the danger, she plays soft and sweet when she has to, and she watches Harper closely after discovering the secret he’s keeping from the mercurial Johnny.

But notwithstanding the performers’ attempts to stir up some grit, the good-looking film is mostly a matter of two-dimensional gestures, like the poster for detective drama Harper in the bedroom of Sheridan’s conflicted character. The references may be clear, but a sense of why any of this matters is nowhere to be found.

d tour film

Now streaming on:

This movie begins with a wide-angle shot of a stripper on the stage of a club, stretching out at the pole as a song by a Cowboy Junkies soundalike band plays. (Turns out the track is by Goldfrapp, whose sound is not normally as such, but for the purposes of this review that’s not a distinction worth torturing.) Openings such as these happen for two reasons: the filmmaker has either seen too few or two many movies that open in pretty much the same way. At this point in time, there’s simply no way the idea occurred to him (it’s always a him) independent of a movie. So already we’re in potentially dicey territory.

We then cut to a college campus, where Harper ( Tye Sheridan ), a seeming straight-arrow law student, is leaving a scintillating lecture relating to Criminal Behavior and Reduced Charges Because Mexico, and patiently indulging the ravings of his knucklehead motormouth druggie pal Paul (Jared Abramson). Harper cuts Paul off by complaining of both his mother’s comatose state and his hatred of his stepfather, whom he believes is going to euthanize said mother and take off with all of said mother’s money and go live with some chippie in Vegas. Paul commiserates but, being a knucklehead motormouth druggie can’t really be of service, or can he?

Soon, Harper is in a seedy bar, drowning sorrows in whiskey and overhearing the braggadocio of criminal Johnny Ray, played by Emory Cohen , here taking a step back from his excellent work in “ Brooklyn ” and landing in the swamp of damaged masculinity from which he first emerged in “ The Place Beyond the Pines ,” a terrible movie that nevertheless looks like “East of Eden” next to this one. Here we realize the movie takes place in a not too distant suburb of Tarantinoville, a magical place where a movie heavy can tell his stripper/maybe prostitute girlfriend Cherry ( Bel Powley ) to “f**k off” while taking a swipe at her, and no feminist movie critic will raise a ruckus about it, because no feminist movie critic would be stupid enough to sit through more than ten minutes of this, and the menacing happens fifteen minutes in. In addition to all this delight, Harper drunkenly solicits Johnny Ray’s assistance in getting rid of the evil stepfather.

It’s at this point that the movie, perhaps suspecting it’s worn out its welcome with anyone who’s sick of this kind of played-out contemporary genre nonsense, says “But wait! Can I interest you in a TRICKY STRUCTURAL DEVICE?” When Johnny Ray and Cherry show up at Harper and stepdad’s nifty mansion the next morning to initiate Operation Vegas Road Trip, writer/director Christopher Smith , who’s been laying it on with the wide-angle shots and split-screen stuff throughout, splinters the movie into two narratives, just like, um, “Sliding Doors?” Yeah, I guess so.  In one narrative, Harper goes with Johnny Ray and Cherry, and in the other, he stays at the mansion and confronts his stepdad (who’s named “Victor,” of all things) with less than optimum results. He also spends some time, because he’s a film buff, watching “ Detour ,” the grimy 1945 no-budget noir directed by Edgar G. Ulmer . Smith draws a direct connection between the hard-edged sexiness of that film’s star Ann Savage and the Offbeat Good Looks of Powley, whose hair here is platinumized, and who would look drawn even if the side of her face wasn’t sporting a fresh scar.

Neither narrative is particularly compelling, but the road trip one has an edge, because travel’s always fun. There’s a diner scene and a scene in which they’re pulled over by a state trooper whom they subsequently turn the tables on and stow in their trunk. (Director Smith demonstrates just how much of a you-know-what he doesn’t give about YOUR politically correct pieties by casting an African-American ( Gbenga Akinnagbe ) as the humiliated cop.) There’s also a lot of Johnny Boy demonstrating his severe ambivalence over the state of his relationship with Cherry. This dilemma grows more fraught on a visit to one Frank (played by John Lynch , who here looks so much like former Mothers of Invention sax played Bunk Gardner that I wanted to maybe crowdfund a biopic around the actor), to whom Johnny Ray is in heavy debt. Frank will accept Cherry as payment, but Johnny just Can’t Let Go.

Here I must issue a spoiler alert. The tricky structural device turns out to not be two alternate storylines. There’s just one storyline, and Smith has chopped it up and parceled it out in alternating timelines that eventually catch up with one another. After which the movie settled in for the Vegas climax, featuring, among other things, a battle of wits between men in which the ultimate prize is the prostitute. Which you may remember from “ True Romance ” or “ Killing Zoe ” or both. Since the final shots of this remarkably pointless movie (a real waste of Bel Powley, among other things) are set on a beach, I’m gonna go ahead and put my money on “True Romance” as the dominant influence. That movie was almost 25 years ago. I have a feeling that criminals, prostitutes and even resentful stepsons do things a little differently nowadays, even in their fantasy realms. It’d be nice if a filmmaker were to go out and find out how, and report back.

Concert films are more popular than they have been in a long time, thanks in part to superstars like Taylor Swift and Beyoncé, who scored box office wins in 2023 with filmed performances. BTS singer Suga is the latest musical favorite who has found success in cinemas across the U.S. with his first theatrically-released film.

SUGA | Agust D TOUR 'D-DAY' THE MOVIE finished the weekend as one of the top-grossing films in America. The title lands at No. 10 on the list of the highest-grossing releases in theaters across the U.S. from April 12 through 14.

According to Box Office Mojo , Suga’s movie pulled in just under $1 million at the U.S. box office. The film racked up a total of $990,000 in ticket sales, but that’s not the full story of the title’s performance.

SUGA | Agust D TOUR 'D-DAY' THE MOVIE is one of four titles that debut inside the top 10 as this past weekend finished. Civil War opens at No. 1, with more than $25 million domestically. Just ahead of Suga come both The Long Game at No. 8 ($1.39 million) and the re-release of Shrek 2 at No. 9 ($1.35 million).

The BTS singer’s concert film actually opened on Wednesday (April 10), so it made money before this weekend. In the U.S. alone, Suga’s movie has now earned $2.2 million domestically.

SUGA | Agust D TOUR 'D-DAY' THE MOVIE is Suga’s first theatrically released concert film. Suga claims a huge fan base in the country, and even though he’s on a career hiatus as he fulfills his military duties in his home nation of South Korea, clearly interest is still high in everything he does. He has previously found success at the box office in America with some of BTS’ projects.

Suga’s concert film—distributed by Trafalgar Releasing, which is known for its music-related movies—features footage from his recent global tour, known simply as the Suga Agust D Tour. The BTS singer and rapper traveled the world throughout several months in 2023, hitting the stage in the U.S., Japan, Singapore, Indonesia, and, of course, South Korea.

Four Years Ago, Multihyphenate Entertainer Teyana Taylor Retired. She’s Never Been Busier

When the musician, actor, and choreographer stepped away from the music industry, the rest of her world opened up.

It comes as no surprise that when I catch up with Teyana Taylor, she is multitasking. She’s in a gray T-shirt and bandana, hooked up to an IV drip (full of “all the things that are needed for me to continue to do amazing work”), and speaking to me over Zoom on a rare day off in Los Angeles, where she’s shooting an untitled Paul Thomas Anderson film. Even through a computer screen, Taylor’s star power is unmistakable—she has the glow of fame around her, and it’s not just the hydration drip.

I rattle off the top notes in her long list of accomplishments: three studio albums and collaborations with the likes of Missy Elliott, Kanye West , and Lauryn Hill; choreography for Beyoncé and appearances in Jay-Z music videos; a monumental entrée into leading dramatic roles with  A Thousand and One (2023); and a directorial debut slated to release before she turns 35. Taylor smiles patiently, unfazed. “I’m a Renaissance woman. A lot of people tell me that, and I love it,” she says.

Teyana-Taylor-Portrait

Like many people, my first encounter with Taylor was through her appearance on MTV’s early-aughts reality series  My Super Sweet 16 . Taylor, who describes herself early in the episode as the uncontested “Queen of New York,” pulls up to her birthday extravaganza dressed as a Barbie in a box, accepting a brand-new Range Rover and custom bike with the regal serenity befitting her station. The party was so buzzy that Pharrell , who had signed Taylor to his Star Trak label earlier that year, crashed it. The year prior, Beyoncé tapped her to choreograph the “ Ring the Alarm ” music video. Taylor, now 33, shrugs these early exploits off as no big thing: “I was already popular in the neighborhood for dancing.”

She credits Harlem for laying the foundation for her many creative inclinations. “It’s very small and very family-oriented. A$AP Rocky, A$AP Ferg, Young B—these were the people I came up with. It’s dope to see all of us doing our thing,” she says. The city played its part, but so did life at home. “I was always a character. I dressed in my mom’s clothes, and I loved movies. When me and my friends would play in the hallway and my mom would put on her great  ’90s records , I stood ear-to-the-door singing my heart out,” she recalls with a laugh. “Like I knew what those words meant.” (Taylor still has a place in New York not far from her native Harlem, although these days she spends most of her time in  Atlanta and Miami.)

Throughout our conversation, Taylor keeps looping back to “the power of go, the power of faith, and the power of prayer.” These tenets might seem cribbed from a self-help book, but they illustrate three qualities that have helped the star prime the world for her ascendance: timing, instinct, and self-belief. Her overachieving mindset doesn’t come from a fear of not being good enough at any one thing, but rather a deep-rooted assurance that she can be great at many.

The 21st century has witnessed the rise of Build-A-Bear-like patchworks of vocations that beg the question, “What do you really do ?” At the same time, the moment’s receptiveness to nonlinear career paths has also reminded us that few culture-shifters ever allowed themselves to be confined to a “day job.” As Taylor cements herself as a household name from Harlem to Hollywood, she’s expanding our idea of who she is—and our expectations of what an artist can be. And although she knows the cost of curtailing her own ambitions, she’s also willing to walk away when the work starts to feel uninspiring.

teyana-taylor-actor

In fact, in 2020, Taylor did just that. “I retired,” she says, pithily, of her decision to leave the music industry. The move didn’t go over well, but she held strong. "The day before my announcement, all my people backed me into a corner and told me what a mistake it would be. If I hadn’t followed my heart, we probably wouldn’t be here talking today."

It wasn’t long before opportunity knocked. Last year, Taylor made her feature film debut in  A Thousand and One , A.V. Rockwell’s Sundance Grand Jury Prize-winning drama. She plays Inez, a single mom struggling to raise her son while navigating everything from the New York carceral system to foster care to gentrification. Taylor had dabbled in comic roles before, but nothing as deep as this. “Inez is so many of the women in my life. She’s my mom, who was a single parent,” Taylor says, referencing her mother turned manager, Nikki. “Our stories may be different, but she’s even within me.” When the reviews praising Taylor’s performance flowed in, the budding actor took it as confirmation of what she already knew: “I am ready for the world to take me seriously.”

More dreams are coming true each day. Earlier this year, she announced  she’d be playing the singer Dionne Warwick, a lifelong idol of hers, in a forthcoming biopic. “I am excited to spend time with her, to study her,” Taylor says. “It’s the opportunity of a lifetime.” She’s also getting to work on her directorial debut.  Get Lite —the story of a bookish New York teen who is tempted to forego his academic promise when a mesmerizing young woman offers him the chance to return to his roots as a dancer—is currently in development with Paramount Pictures.

Then there’s the role she plays daily: mother to two young daughters who are already gearing up to follow in her footsteps. “I have two mini-me’s,” she notes. “Wish me luck.” On Taylor’s last tour in 2022, Junie, her oldest, came along for the ride. “And my three-year-old recently told me, ‘Mommy, on your next tour, I need the microphone and two dancers,’” she says.

But how does she see herself, beyond the titles bestowed upon her? “I don’t have to do anything,” she says adamantly. "I would never trap myself in a box. You just have to follow your heart."

50 Cent Launches G-Unit Studios in Louisiana: ‘I’m Ready to Work’

The media mogul is building his television and film empire in downtown Shreveport.

50 Cent will surely make Shreveport, Louisiana a media enclave with the unveiling of G-Unit Studios.

On Wednesday, the rapper and business mogul shared the news on Instagram with a clip of a report from KSLA News 12 about the production studios' development. G-Unit Studios, which launched as a company in 2005, will be built in the city's downtown area and will house a range of projects that the Queens native will be working on. Currently, Fifty has several shows on STARZ, including the Power franchise and BMF , and he'll next be working on a docuseries project focused on Diddy .

“As someone who has always believed in the transformative power of music, film, and television, I’m beyond excited to introduce the expansion of my G-Unit Film & Television through the launch of G-Unit Studios right here in Shreveport," Fifty stated to Billboard . "From the gritty narratives of the streets to the compelling stories that define our era, G-Unit has always been more than just entertainment; it’s a platform for voices that need to be heard, stories that need to be told. Bringing G-Unit Studios to Shreveport is not just a business decision; it’s a commitment to fostering talent, creating opportunities, and building a community that thrives through creativity and innovation. We see Shreveport as a beacon of inspiration and creativity."

The Grammy Award winner could have some competition with media entrepreneur Tyler Perry , whose 330-acre studios are in Atlanta, but Fifty's talents in entertainment are singular, and the Bayou State seems ready to welcome him with open arms.

"We are thrilled that G-Unit Studios will plant its roots in Shreveport,” Mayor Arceneaux said in a statement, per KSLA News 12 . “This city’s rich culture and talent provides the perfect backdrop for this endeavor. We are eager to collaborate with Mr. Jackson and G-Unit Film & Television to bring captivating movies and entertainment to Shreveport and Caddo Parish."

A press conference for the formal launch of G-Unit Studios will be held on Thursday April 18 at 4 p.m. CT at Government Plaza in Shreveport.
