Tour Activity Level

The activity level for this tour:

You’re a leisurely traveler. You typically take it easy and discover the energy of a new place by people-watching or soaking in the atmosphere at a local café. You can climb at least one flight of stairs, board a coach, and walk unassisted at a relaxed pace for up to 60 minutes without difficulty. You can easily handle altitudes up to 5,000 feet.

You like a balanced approach to travel. Walking two to three miles over the course of a day is no problem for you. You can partake in a two-hour leisurely walking tour, covering up to two miles (with included breaks). You can handle a variety of terrains, from cobblestone streets to moderate hills with relative ease and without assistance. You can climb two flights of stairs with ease. There may be 1 to 2 days on this tour when walking tours can cover 3 to 4 miles over uneven terrain. You can handle altitudes up to 6,000 feet.

You’re an on-the-go traveler. You don’t want to miss a thing, so walking and standing for longer periods of time (2-3 hours) isn’t a big deal. A moderately paced two-and-a-half-hour walking tour, covering several miles, hills, and uneven surfaces, is no problem for you. Walking four miles over the course of a day is very doable, as is climbing into and out of various modes of transportation (tuk-tuk, cable car, zodiac, etc.). You can climb three flights of stairs easily and handle altitudes between 6,000 and 9,000 feet. Expect some longer days balanced with free time to recharge or set out on your own adventure. This level is not a fit for travelers who require mobility assistance devices.

You’re ready to seize the day, whatever it may bring. You lead an active life at home (walking, biking, and half or full day hikes are things you may enjoy) and 10,000 steps a day is normal for you. You can handle longer walking tours (more than 3 hours covering 3+ miles at a steady clip) and activities that involve traversing uneven terrain, steep slopes, standing for periods of time, and varying altitudes and temperatures. You don’t mind being on the go with some early starts, late-nights, and full days. You can handle altitudes of 9,000 feet or higher with little to no issue. This level is not appropriate for travelers who use wheelchairs, walkers, and other mobility assistance devices.

What to visit while in Mostar Mostar has architecturally noteworthy buildings in a wide range of styles that are a mixture of indigenous and foreign styles. Such styles are visible in Mostar’s Franciscan church, the Ottoman MuslibegovićaHouse, the Dalmatian Ćorović House and the Old Gymnasium, which features Andalusian and Mamluk elements and is the result of the Austro-Hungarian desire to promote Bosnian national identity. Several Ottoman inns have also survived, along with other buildings from this period of Mostar’s history, such as fountains and schools. There are number of surviving late Ottoman houses in the old city centre that demonstrate the component features of this form of domestic architecture: upper storey for residential use, hall, paved courtyard, and verandah on one or two storeys. The Cejvan Cehaj Mosque, dating back to 1552, is the oldest mosque in Mostar and later it became a madrasa or Islamic school. The Old Bazaar called the Kujundziluk is named after the goldsmiths who traditionally created and sold their wares on this street, and still sells authentic paintings and copper or bronze carvings of the Stari Most, pomegranates, which are the natural symbol of Herzegovina, or the stećaks, medieval tombstones that are found in Bosnia and in Croatia.

Croatia Small Group Tour Overview:

Bosnia  has a long and rich history with many diverse influences. Slavic peoples settled here in the centuries after the fall of the Roman Empire. Bosnia became a kingdom in the 14th century, then passed 400 years as a province of the Ottoman Empire. Austria-Hungary annexed the two provinces of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1908, shortly before the start of World War I.  Bosnia became an autonomous republic under the Yugoslav Federation before declaring independence in 1992. We’ll spend two days in   fascinating Sarajevo  and meet its the wonderful people.

Croatia has a spectacular 1100 mile long coastline on the Adriatic Sea with 1246 islands. We will begin our explorations in the south at Dubrovnik , a one-time Mediterranean sea power called the Pearl of the Adriatic. Mostar  is the main city of the southern part of Bosnia-Herzegovina, on the banks of the Neretva river. Under the Ottoman Empire, Mostar became an important trading hub, where Jews, Christians and Muslims traded and lived side by side. The result was that Mostar became a melting pot of cultures and nationalities.

The centerpiece of Mostar is the Old Bridge, commissioned by the Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent in the 16th century. Destroyed during the war in 1993 the bridge was rebuilt using the original materials and reopened in 2004.

Diocletian  was emperor of Rome from 284 – 305 AD. The only emperor to voluntarily abdicate, he had constructed a massive retirement palace covering 10 acres in his homeland of Dalmatia. Having survived centuries of refugees and squatters, core elements of the palace are still prominent today, including all of the ground floor rooms and corridors. We’ll begin the day with a fascinating guided tour of the palace and the historic center of Split.

Evening free to have an aperitif or dinner inside the splendidly illuminated remains of Diocletian’s Palace.

Zadar  is one of the Adriatic’s most interesting historical (and beautiful) towns, dating back some 3,000 years. Lying on a peninsula, it rose to prominence in Antiquity with a seafaring and merchant people known as Liburnians and then as a Roman province from the time of Augustus. After the Fall power changed hands numerous times over 1600 years with the longest periods of domination by Byzantines, Venetians and Austrians. The urban grid of Zadar was laid out by the Romans but its aspect remains decidedly medieval.  Our local guide will illuminate all and you’ll have time for your own explorations afterwards.

Transfer to the  Plitvice Lakes , Croatia’s most popular attraction, where we’ll be staying just outside the National Park at the Hotel Degenija . Included dinner.

Our happy travellers rave about Croatia

Local restaurants were highly appreciated.

We loved the free time available at each city. This allowed us time to explore further areas of interest. Visits to Dubrovnik, Kotor, Plitvice, and Ljubljana were highlights. Also the selection of local restaurants were highly appreciated!

Too many wonderful sights and experiences!

Our highlights were Lake Bled, the outstanding hotel at Opatija, the trip to Havar island, walking along the wall at Dubrovnik…Too many wonderful sights and experiences! There was not a single day that did not have a memorable sight.

Highly recommend

Just returned from an incredible trip to Croatia with Approach. The destinations were breathtaking! From the charming coastal towns to the ancient city walls of Dubrovnik, every view was mesmerizing. The Plitvice Lakes National Park was a nature lover’s paradise. The tour guides were knowledgeable, and the food was delicious. Highly recommend traveling with Approach tours for an unforgettable Croatian adventure!

Thank you for a great vacation

The whole Approach team that we interacted with before the tour gets a gold star for its communication and responsiveness.  Everyone was friendly and prompt in their response. Loved the Tunnel of Hope excursion in Sarajevo, the climb of the Great Wall of Ston Fortress, the lunch tapas and wine tasting at the winery, the hike in the Plitvice National Park and the caves and Lake Bled excursions in Slovenia. Thank you for a great vacation…thoroughly enjoyed the majority of the tour.

You are filling the gap!

Super satisfied – we have seen & done wonderful sights & had experiences beyond our expectations. The special event things (truffles, chocolate, champagne-persecco party, etc) were the cherry on top! And we are not novice travellers. A friend in “the business” prides herself on tours for travellers not tourists. She is now retired. You are filling the gap!

Can’t wait to travel with you again!

Approach tours did an amazing job with our trip to Croatia and the Balkans. Incredible food, beautiful hotels and helpful staff and guides along the way made for a great experience! Can’t wait to travel with you again!

All in all a great adventure!

I toured with Approach to Croatia and the Balkans and thoroughly enjoyed it! I was picked up by Lincoln Town car at my door and taken to the airport and picked up and driven home on arrival back in my city. We flew from Ottawa to the take-off city of Toronto for $100. The tour was thorough, covering 4 countries, plus a few islands. An excellent guide accompanied us all the way. She was very knowledgeable and spoke good English. All in all a great adventure!

We may see you next year.

Back a few weeks ago from Croatia. What a wonderful trip! As travel kits, we got nice backpacks filled with little gifts needed for such a trip. The book informed us of everything we needed to know regarding weather, itinerary, travel tips, etc. I’m still bragging about it to friends who may just experience it for themselves. Chauffeured to and from the airport and best of all, they paid the tips everywhere which is a great relief for all travellers. Hotels, especially food, excellent. Good job Approach! We may see you next year.

Croatia To Bosnia and Herzegovina, Make Your Vacation Go Further!

Croatia to Bosnia and Herzegovina

Croatia shares a border with five countries and the Adriatic Sea, meaning there are plenty of opportunities to make your vacation go further than Croatia. One of the most interesting of these bordering countries is Bosnia and Herzegovina. In this guide, we’ll be highlighting the most compelling parts of this country (which you have to see in person) as well as how to easily get from Croatia to Bosnia in a round trip.

Where is Bosnia and Herzegovina?

Located on the southeastern side of Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina is becoming a more and more popular European destination. There are many countries tourists can visit on day trips from Croatia , but what makes Bosnia and Herzegovina so special is its diverse culture, rich history and the way it can spark an interest for a wide variety of travelers. From the nature seekers to the city trippers, Bosnia and Herzegovina has it all.

We recommend driving from Croatia to Bosnia or booking a private tour that includes transport rather than using public transport. Driving is a lot simpler than using public transport and can save travelers a chunk of time that is better spent exploring!

For help on how to rent a car whilst traveling around Croatia, or for more information on our private tours which include Bosnia and Herzegovina in their itineraries, contact us today.

Croatia to Bosnia and Herzegovina

What to see in Bosnia and Herzegovina?

Bosnia and Herzegovina thrives in terms of entertainment, culture and scenic views. The geography and the long history which has resulted in the country’s independence have made for some unique geographic wonders, architecture, and places to visit .

Here are some of our highlights to add to your travel plans:

When traveling from Croatia to Bosnia and Herzegovina, no trip is complete without a stop-off at the famous town of Mostar . Approximately 2 hours by car, Mostar is incredibly easy to get to from both Dubrovnik and Split.

The city itself is known for its spectacularly unique architecture, the most famous of which is the Stari Most Bridge which many tourists travel far and wide to see. If you’re lucky, you may even get a chance to witness the brave Mostar Diving Club as they jump 24 meters into the Neretva River.

No trip to Mostar is complete without a wander around its historic town. Bask in the panoramic views of the old city from the Koski Mehmed Pasha Mosque or spend hours browsing the many stalls and bustling shops at the Old Bazaar. The perfect end to a trip in Mostar is taking a sunset stroll along the cobblestone streets of the Old Town as the bustling evening energy comes to life around you.

Croatia to Bosnia and Herzegovina - mostar

Una National Park

Just on the edge of Croatia’s border is Una National Park. The park is fairly new in terms of its establishment, having only received its title back in 2008 to protect the rivers and wildlife in the area. There is plenty to see in the diverse landscape from crystal clear waters to historic buildings that include an old mosque and monastery.

For most, the main highlight of Una National Park is Štrbački buk, a terraced waterfall that is 25 meters high. Although, there are many waterfalls littered throughout the park for tourists to see, most of which line the hiking trails and offer viewing platforms for traveler’s to soak up the calming sight.

If you enjoy getting lost in nature, make sure you include some of Croatia’s national parks in your travel plans also. For guidance on how to curate the perfect nature-themed tour around Croatia, get in touch with our specialists who can create a custom tour tailored completely to your needs.

Food in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Much like its neighboring country of Croatia, traditional Bosnian food is a mix-match of dishes which are often boiled and flavored using sauces made naturally from vegetables and fruits. Often you find that recipes have been passed down through generations and have remained relatively unchanged.

Bosnian cuisine has a range of influences from the west and east and is closely related to Turkish and Mediterranean cuisines. You will often find a lot of vegetables such as potatoes, cabbage, onion and mushroom within Bosnian dishes as well as a range of meats, the most common of which are beef, lamb, and poultry.

If you’re looking to try some authentic Bosnian cuisine on your travels, then you can’t go wrong with the national dish of the country: Bosanski Lonac. Also known as Bosnian pot, this popular dish is a vegetable stew beloved by the nation.

True to its Bosnian roots, the dish is made up of a variety of vegetables and chunks of meat. The most common ingredients found in this dish are: potatoes, carrots, bell peppers, cabbage, tomatoes, garlic, and parsley with beef, lamb, and veal being the most common choice of meats used.

How long should you spend in Bosnia and Herzegovina?

Considering a small part of Bosnia divides Croatia in half (which has only recently been joined once again through the opening of Pelješac Bridge ) many tourists travel from Croatia to Bosnia on a day trip. If you are staying in the Southern part of Croatia, it is fairly easy to travel from Split to Bosnia, as well as Dubrovnik to Bosnia on a day trip.

We would recommend visiting Bosnia and Herzegovina for a day at the very least whilst visiting Croatia, but 2-3 days is the perfect amount of time to truly immerse yourself in this wonderful country. If you need help planning a day trip or are considering a longer stay in Bosnia and Herzegovina, speak to our Croatia travel experts .

Before traveling from Croatia to Bosnia and Herzegovina

Something to remember before traveling from Croatia to Bosnia and Herzegovina is that these two countries do not share the same currency. 2023 saw Croatia move from the Croatian Kuna over to the Euro whilst Bosnia uses the Bosnian Mark. Some Euro notes may be accepted within Bosnia and Herzegovina, but most Euro coins aren’t.

To ensure you are fully prepared for your trip and always up-to-date with the latest travel news, we would recommend speaking to one of our travel experts .

Book your travel today

Some of our bespoke tours already visit Bosnia and Herzegovina . However, if you would like to include a personalized day trip or a longer stay in Bosnia and Herzegovina speak to our Croatia travel specialists who are here to help.

Our travel experts can help curate the perfect itinerary for your Croatia vacation. Including customizing a tour that includes all your must-see destinations. Get in touch today to start planning your dream vacation.

Croatia, Montenegro and Bosnia – 10-Day Balkan Peninsula Itinerary

The Balkan Peninsula, or simply the Balkans, is still somewhat of the hidden gem of Europe. The natural beauty is unexpectedly stunning, the people are friendly, the food is absolutely delicious and abundant, it still has not been as explored as other parts of Europe. Some of it has to do with civil unrest in the region in the last few decades and some with accessibility.

In this 10-day Balkan Peninsula Itinerary we visit Croatia, Montenegro and Bosnia. The itinerary is designed as a road trip that begins and ends in Dubrovnik and renting a car is necessary. Hiking, boating, wine tasting, and many other adventures are included in this itinerary.

Best Time to Visit Balkans

The summer is the most popular time to visit the Balkans – mid-June to the end of August. During this time you can expect longer border crossing, much bigger crowds and prices for attractions to go up. My favorite time to visit is early June or September. The weather is still really nice but it is much less crowded.

Be aware that September is a harvest season in Croatia, and a lot of wineries may be completely closed or require booking for wine tasting and tours.

Croatia, Montenegro and Bosnia – 10-Day Balkan Peninsula Itinerary

  • Day 1 & 2: Dubrovnik, Croatia
  • Day 3: Pelješac, Croatia
  • Day 4: Korčula, Croatia
  • Days 5&6: Kotor, Montenegro
  • Day 7&8: Žabljak
  • Day 9: Trebinje or Mostar
  • Day 10: Fly Out

Tips for the Best Experience in the Balkans

Day 1 & 2: dubrovnik, croatia .

Dubrovnik is the most popular tourist destination in Croatia . The city is stunning, beaches are beautiful and there is a lot of history here, but it can get overwhelmingly crowded.

Upon your arrival, take a cable car to Panorama Restaurant and Bar for a bird’s eye view of the city and neighboring islands. Afterward, you can explore the Old Town and walk the City Walls. Or just hide in secluded Sveti Jakov beach to catch some sun rays and refresh in the amazing Adriatic Sea.

Croatia, Montenegro and Bosnia – 10-Day Balkan Peninsula Itinerary

The following day, I recommend kayaking around Lokrum Island which gives you unique views of the Dubrovnik City Walls as well. If kayaking is not your thing, you can take a 15-minute ferry ride to Lokrum Island and spend a day exploring and swimming.

There are many beaches in and around Dubrovnik to enjoy the pristine Adriatic seaside or short one-day excursions to explore other areas in the region.

Where Did We Stay: Hotel Kompas Dubrovnik – we stayed in the Lapad neighborhood. It is a short walk or bus drive from the Old Town. There are a lot of restaurants and bars in Lapad if you want to stay away from the crowds.

Where Did We Eat: Lady Pi-Pi, Taverna Loggia and Nautika .

Day 3: Pelješac, Croatia

Pelješac, a peninsula, only 34 miles north of Dubrovnik is where some of Croatia’s best wine is produced. Plavac Mali (Little Blue), ancestral Zinfandel, is the main grape that grows in Pelješac and Dingač region, the most prestigious wine-making region, on the South side of the peninsula.

Recently one of the big attractions that brings a lot of tourists to Pelješac is Edivo Winery. The first underwater winery where bottles and clay jugs are stored underwater is Mali Ston Bay. Here you can enjoy a traditional winery tour and tasting or join the divers on a tour of a submerged sunken ship and the wine stored around it.

Some other more popular wineries from the peninsula are Grgich Winery, Korta Katarina and Matuško Winery. But the beauty of this peninsula is that in recent years a lot of smaller family-owned wineries are popping up – Winery Bezek being a perfect example of that.

Outside of amazing wine, the peninsula is known for pristine pebble beaches, kite surfing and delicious oysters, mussels, squid, and fresh fish.

Croatia, Montenegro and Bosnia – 10-Day Balkan Peninsula Itinerary

Orebić is the biggest town on the peninsula with all the amenities and easy ferry access to surrounding islands. Viganj is a great town to visit if you are interested in kite surfing, located at the vortex of the wind tunnel halfway along the Korčula channel. Drače and Janjina are two sleepy little villages next to each other. Drače has direct access to water and is where Edivo Winery is located, and just a few minutes north is Janjina with endless vineyards and olive trees. Divan, Duba and on the other side of the peninsula Željana are great locations for pristine white pebble beaches and crystal-clear water.

Visit to Trstenik, where the Grgich Winery is located, is a must with a stop at Vitaceae where they serve freshly caught seafood and local wines.

Where Did We Stay: Apartmani Branka in Drače  with amazing views of neighboring islands and the bay. However, since the next day’s adventure takes us to Korčula and the ferry leaves from Orebić you may want to stay there. It’s a 30-minute drive from Drače to Orebić.

Where Did We Eat: Vitaceae and Konoba Dalmatinska Kuca

Day 4: Korčula, Croatia

Korčula is easily accessible for a day from Orebić via car ferry. Grab an early morning ferry and plan to spend a full day here. Pick one of the many amazing beaches to spend the morning at in Korčula, we went to Žitna. The town of Brna is a good choice too.

Croatia, Montenegro and Bosnia – 10-Day Balkan Peninsula Itinerary

After the beach, we suggest a delicious lunch at Konoba Albert and a visit to a winery or two. Pošip (white varietal grape) is everything on Korčula. You will see signs everywhere. Even if you are not a wine drinker a lot of wineries also make olive oil you can taste and buy. The town of Smokvica is where a lot of wineries are located around.

For the afternoon I would recommend heading back toward the old town and spending the rest of the time exploring Korčula old town. Or if you are a wine lover stop in Lumbarda to taste Grk wine. Unique white wine to Korčula.

In the old town, you can climb the bell tower for amazing views of the port and neighboring Pelješac. Visit Marco Polo’s house, he is rumored to be from Korčula. Or just sit at one of the bars and restaurants by the water.

Return the same night and spend a night in Pelješac before heading to Kotor the next day.

Days 5&6: Kotor, Montenegro

The drive from Pelješac to Kotor is about 3.5 hours, maybe longer depending on where in Pelješac you are staying. You will be crossing a country border so the exact time may vary. The drive to Kotor is along the beautiful Adriatic coastline and the Bay of Kotor with endless views. It is one of the most beautiful drives in the region.

Before you get to Kotor, make a stop in Perast for coffee or lunch. Perast is a town of less than 300 people and 19 churches, beautifully situated between Sv. Ilija hill and Bay of Kotor. Two islets in the bay, that feel hand reach away from Perast, are the main attraction. You will have an opportunity to visit them from Kotor, the next day.

After the stop in Perast, continue your drive to Kotor. Spend the afternoon/evening exploring the old town, possibly even walking the city walls and enjoying entertainment and delicious food in the old town.

For the next day, you can fit both of my suggested adventures or just pick one if it’s too much. I recommend starting the day early and hiking the Ladder of Kotor. It is a 6.1 mile relatively easy hike above the old city and city walls with amazing views of the bay. Less crowded way to enjoy the view than city walls.

Day Trips from Dubrovnik

After the hike, jump on a speed boat and visit the Church of Our Lady of the Rocks (one of the islets, the other one is privately owned) and then go for a dip in a blue cave. You will need it after the hike. The tour is 3 hours long.

It is a packed day, full of adventure but definitely worth your time and effort.

Where Did We Stay:   Solaris Lux Apartments – the cleanest place we ever stayed at.

Where Did We Eat: Marenda Steakhouse and Konoba Scala Santa

Day 7&8: Žabljak

Žabljak is less than 3 hours away from Kotor and a base for exploring Durmitor National Park. Durmitor is part of the Dinarica Mountain Range and is a paradise worth exploring for hikers. On your way to Žabljak, you will drive through Nikšic, where Nikšićko beer is made, and you can stop here for lunch.

Once in Žabljak, I would suggest driving past the town to Durmitor National Park to the trailhead for Tara Canyon Viewpoint. The hike is only 1.9 miles but very steep and offers amazing views of the Tara Canyon from the Montenegro side.

Croatia, Montenegro and Bosnia – 10-Day Balkan Peninsula Itinerary

After the hike, I would suggest coming back to Žabljak and visiting Black Lake. You can walk around the lake or even go for a swim. There is a restaurant at the lake where you can enjoy dinner afterward.

The next day starts early, and we recommend hiking to Bobotov Kuk , the highest peak in Durmitor National Park – 2,523 meters (8,278 ft.). There are multiple ways to attempt this hike and none of them are easy. The trailhead is in Sedlo and the most common way this hike is done is in and out of Sedlo. However, it can be done in and out of Žabljak or as a loop that starts in Sedlo and finishes in Žabljak.

We did the loop, Sedlo to Žabljak and it was a very tough hike. The Žabljak part of the hike must have had a recent rockfall and the trail was completely wiped out. It was close to 10 miles total with 3400 ft. ascent and 4900 ft. descent. Knees were not happy.

Croatia, Montenegro and Bosnia – 10-Day Balkan Peninsula Itinerary

If we were to do it again, we would stick to the common way in and out of Sedlo. The hike is not easy and gets a little sketchy to make it to the peak but the views will leave you in awe. You will hike through green pastures, with limestone dolomite-looking peaks, alpine lakes, and vast mountain views all around. It is one of the most picturesque day hikes we ever did.

For those that are not interested in hiking, you can drive a Durmitor Ring – a 76 km drive around the Durmitor National Park with breathtaking views or go whitewater rafting in Tara River or zipline over the canyon.

Where Did We Stay: Peak of Durmitor Panorama

Where Did We Eat: Restaurant Or’O

Day 9: Trebinje or Mostar

Today you can choose where in Bosnia to stop and explore. Mostar and its Old Bridge (Stari Most) over the River Neretva attract many tourists. On the other hand, Trebinje is much quieter and quaint with a lot of historical monuments to visit and delicious wine to try. Trebinje is also much closer to Dubrovnik and will significantly cut back on driving.

If you decide to visit Mostar, I suggest spending the morning exploring the city, walking through city bazaars, eating delicious food, walking across the Old Bridge and watching young guys jump off the bridge. In the afternoon, you can drive to Kravica Waterfalls to refresh or just enjoy this natural beauty.

Day Trips from Dubrovnik

If you decide to visit Trebinje, it will feel a lot more authentic and off-the-beaten-path experience than Mostar. I would suggest getting to Hercegovacka Gračanica Monastery for panoramic views of Trebinje, walking by Trebišnjica River while admiring views and old buildings, exploring the old town, visiting wineries and indulging in delicious food. Trebinje has a bridge from the Ottoman Empire as well. Not as popular as the one in Mostar but stunning, nonetheless.

Where Did We Stay: We spent a day exploring and a night back in Dubrovnik

Where Did We Eat: Mostar – Restoran Sadrvan; Trebinje – Restaurant “Humsko”

Day 10: Fly Out

Depending on where you are flying out to, you still may have a morning to explore Dubrovnik. Most flights to the US are very early in the morning.

Flying in and out of Sarajevo is also an option, sometimes a cheaper option.

The best way to enjoy this itinerary is to rent a car and drive yourself. With that, make sure that the rental company allows you to take the car to these three countries. Sometimes there are restrictions. If driving off the beaten path, you may run into narrow and unpaved roads, especially in Bosnia.

Croatia is in the European Union, meanwhile, Montenegro and Bosnia are not, which means you will have to cross international borders. Make sure you have your passport and car documents handy. Most of the time, crossing the borders is seamless for tourists.

All three countries speak the same language with different dialects, even though they call it different names. It is not an easy language to pick up, but knowing a few basic words goes a long way.

The currency in Croatia and Montenegro is the Euro, while the currency in Bosnia is the Bosnian Marks. Credit cards are widely accepted and ATMs are the best way to get the cash if needed.

People in the Balkans are very welcoming and love to share their culture and food with visitors.

Best of Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro Tour

This option is for the ones that have limited time.

Day 1  Zagreb – airport pick up & city tour

The first day is dedicated to Zagreb, the Croatian capital. After our driver picks you up at the airport you can get some rest and then do the walking tour of the city. Zagreb is known as a central European city with a Mediterranean soul. It means that you will see the architecture you can usually see in other European capitals, but the vibe that you can feel in the city is more typical for the cities on the coast. The coffee drinking culture on open terraces is really typical for Zagreb. You will visit all the most popular spots like the Main ban Jelačić square, Cathedral, Dolac Market, Stone gate, Sta Mark’s church, Zagreb funicular and Zrinjevac park.

Overnight Zagreb.

Day 2 Slovenia Tour – Bled, Postojna & Ljubljana

On the second day the plan is to spend the whole day in Slovenia, visiting the three most popular destinations: Postojna cave, Bled lake and Ljubljana, the Slovenian capital. Postojna cave is a natural gem, a cave system of 25 kilometres. The visit to the cave is fully organized with an official cave guide. Next destination is Bled Lake where you have many options to choose from: you can take the pletna boat to Bled island, you can taste the Bled cream cake or visit the Bled castle with the most beautiful view of the surroundings. We end the tour with Ljubljana, the Slovenian capital. You will take a walk through the city center and enjoy the city.

Day 3 Istria Tour – 3 cities

The third day is dedicated to Istria. Many times people have referred to Istria as the Croatian Tuscany. In Istria the hilly green inland with medieval cities joins the blue coastline with Roman heritage and architecture. On this day you can choose the three cities you wish to visit, depending what is in the center of you interest. Usually we recommend Pula, because of the best preserved amphitheater in the world, Hum, the smallest city in the world and Rovinj, the gorgeous coastal city with colorful buildings and narrow streets.

Overnight Plitvice lakes.

Day 4 Plitvice – Bihać – Sarajevo

The forth day starts with sightseeing of Plitvice Lakes national park. Plitvice are listed as UNESCO heritage and the stunning 16 lakes in the park and the waterfalls connecting them will leave you speechless. After the park, you will continue to the city of Bihać – a very important city in the terms of it’s significance in the wars led in this area. After a short sightseeing of the city you will continue your route to Sarajevo, the Bosnian capital.

Overnight Sarajevo.

Day 5 Sarajevo – Mostar – Počitelj – Split

The day will start with a short walking tour of the Sarajevo city center. Sarajevo is often called the ”Jerusalem of Europe” because of it’s cultural and religious diversity. It is also the city with a long history and with the recent Balkan war which left a strong mark on the city itself.

After the tour and some time in the city, you will continue with a transfer to Split. It won’t be just a transfer because you will make a few stops along the way. You will stop in Mostar to see the famous bridge also listed as UNESCO heritage, the bridge that connects the East and the West. There are also two more destinations, Počitelj – the city of stunning architecture and Blagaj, with the spring of Buna river and the traditional tekke.

Overnight in Split.

Day 6 Split – Dubrovnik

Split is the biggest city in Dalmatia and a city with an overwhelming heritage. It was developed around a summer palace of the Roman emperor Diocletian. The king chose this spot as his summer residence and the palace, now listed as UNESCO heritage, is still a ”living part” of the city. You will take a walking tour and get to know the city and it’s history.

After spending some time in Split, you will continue the tour with a transfer to Dubrovnik.

In Dubrovnik we will organize a walking tour for you to get familiar with the city (if you are a GOT fan we can organize a specialized tour).

Overnight Dubrovnik.

Day 7 Montenegro Tour

On the 7th day you will take a day tour to Montenegro from Dubrovnik getting to know the cities like Perast, Kotor and Budva.

Day 8 Airport transfer

Airport transfer will be organized for you.

Best of Croatia, Slovenia, Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina Tour

The tour starts with us greeting you on the Zagreb airport. A transfer is organized for you to your accommodation in the city center. When you decide, a city walking tour will be organized for you. You will get to know the capital of Croatia, the history of the city, but also the way of life you can experience in the city now. Places you will see: ban Jelačić square, Dolac Market, Cathedral, Tkalčićeva street, Stone gate, St Mark’s church and square, Zagreb funicular and Zrinjevac park.

In a day tour you will spend in Slovenia, you will explore the most popular Slovenian attractions. First you will take a walk in Ljubljana city center and hear about Slovenian and the capital’s history, then you will be off to Bled Lake. Bled lake was nominated as a wonder of the world so just imagine the beauty hidden between the Alps. The last destination of the day is Postojna cave.

Overnight Postojna.

Day 3 Postojna – Istria Tour

The day starts with an organized tour of Postojna cave. Postojna cave is the most visited cave in Europe and the only one that you enter with a train. The visit is fully organized with the licensed cave guide.

The tour continues by visiting Poreč city in Istria county, in Croatia. Poreč is famous by the Euphrasian basilica, a UNESCO site. The basilica complex is the Byzantine heritage in Croatia.

The tour continues to Rovinj city, often called the  pearl of the Adriatic.

Overnight in Rovinj.

Day 4 Istria – Plitvice lakes national park

We are still on the Istrian peninsula on the 4th day. You will visit Pula to see Arena, the best preserved amphitheater in the world and see a bit of the Roman architecture remains. On the way to Plitvice Lakes national park, which is our next destination, you will visit the city of Hum. Hum is, unofficially, the smallest city in the world with a lot of traditional food and beverages to taste. You can also visit Opatija, the first tourist destination in Croatia.

Overnight Plitvice.

Day 5 Plitvice – Zadar – Split

The day starts with sightseeing of Plitvice lakes National park. This park has 16 lakes which are connected with waterfalls. It is listed as UNESCO heritage and a wealth of the world. It is the biggest, the most visited and the oldest Croatian national park.

The tour continues towards Split but with a stop in the city of Zadar. Zadar is a city on the Croatian coast, with beautiful architecture and two unique things to see: Greeting to the Sun and Sea Organ.

Overnight Split.

Split is the second biggest city in Croatia and we are sure when we say that the people there love their city above all other things. It is a city built around the Roman emperor Diocletian’s palace which is in a way still functional because it’s the only palace in the world where people still live in it.

After sightseeing of Split the route continues to Dubrovnik.

Day 7 Dubrovnik

With the significance of this city, the importance and the rich history we reserved a whole day for it. The day will start with a walking tour and in the afternoon you are free to explore the City on your own.

Day 8 Montenegro Tour

Day tour from Dubrovnik into Montenegro. You will visit Kotor, Perast and Budva and learn all about the history of the cities and the country itself.

Day 9 Dubrovnik – Mostar – Sarajevo

On this day we start the return towards Zagreb but we are doing it by getting to know Bosnia and Herzegovina. First is Mostar, the city where the East meets the West. It is famous by the bridge across the Neretva river which is listed as UNESCO heritage. Other than Mostar you will visit Počitelj and Blagaj too.

Day 10 Sarajevo – Travnik – Bihać

The second day in Bosnia and Herzegovina is reserved for Sarajevo, the capital and the small cities like Jajce, Travnik and Bihać. After the morning walking tour of Sarajevo city you will continue towards Bihać with interesting stops along the way.

Overnight Bihać.

Day 11 Airport transfer

Transfer from Bihać to Zagreb airport.

*Note – we can add 2 more days to visit Belgrade. Then the tour would go:

Day 10 Sarajevo – Višegrad – Belgrade

Day 11 belgrade – zagreb, places you will visit on the best of croatia, slovenia, bosnia and herzegovina and montenegro tour, croatia – slovenia – bosnia & herzegovina – montenegro tour.

“With this trip, my expectations were not only met, they were exceeded in many instances. It was a memorable trip and the beauty of Croatia will stay with me for a very long time. I have been to 56 countries on five continents and so I speak from experience. Both Croatia and Bosnia have been through so much. The people there are to be commended for their courage and endurance. It was inspiring to see how warm and friendly the people are despite all the adversity they have been through. The dinner we attended hosted by a family in Sarajevo was an absolute highlight. There are not enough superlatives to describe the level of excellence that our Tour Director, Kassie Jones provided. Her attentiveness to details is remarkable. She anticipated needs even before we knew we had them. Everyday, she brought something new and delightful to the experience from fun games we played on the coach to tasty treats to "hidden treasures" .... I could go on and on! She is articulate and her knowledge of the countries we visited was deep and insightful. Her explanation of the Balkan War was especially helpful. Her genuine caring for us made us feel like her personal guests. and not just paying clients. She gave us many suggestions for things to do in our free time, places to have lunch, where to shop. etc. The local specialists she lined up were all excellent. The optional tours added immensely to the whole experience as well. Especially Montenegro - not to be missed. The hotels all provided very good value for the money with the exception of the hotel in Split which I understand will not be used in future. It wasn't that bad ..it just was a disappointment after the others. I highly recommend this trip. This was my first Costsaver trip and I like the concept.. I have been on five full Trafalgar Tours and would have no hesitation in going with Costsaver again. Especially if Kassie Jones is the Tour Director!” - Hazel ( read more reviews )

This tour is great for all ages, including families. The accommodation is a mix of good quality hotels and meals to suit almost all dietary requirements.

Country Roads of Croatia (Classic, 14 Days)

We were treated like royalty from the very beginning. Travelling with Insight offered a truly seamless experience and everything was taken care of for us, from hotel room keys being available as soon as we got off the coach, not a single instance of touching our luggage to and from the coach, personalized birthday celebrations, Insight Flourishes as local treats and more. We learned and saw so much more of Croatia than an individual traveller would have. At every instance throughout the journey, Karin (our Travel Director) added significant context to the places we were visiting - both from a historical and cultural perspective which added so much meaning to the journey. I particularly liked visiting the lesser known areas of Croatia (Trogir, Ston), combined with the main cities (Split, Dubrovnik) on this Country Roads itinerary that Insight Vacations offers for guests to explore these off-the-beaten-path destinations. Travelling with Insight offers an elevated experience to the entire journey, with a true touch of magic.

The entire experience was terrific and Kassie is the absolute best. We have taken five tours with Trafalgar and one with another company and while we enjoyed each one no other tour director made the trip so enjoyable as Kassie did. She was always thoroughly prepared, always with a happy and positive attitude and always added that personal touch. Made you feel like a friend, not just a customer on a trip. Wish I could have her on every trip.

Budapest to Split Group Rail Tour (18-35)

I’ve had the best two weeks on the Eastern European/Balkans tour with David. From initially booking with the company, I had a great help from Richard. He answered all my questions and eased my nerves as it was my first time backpacking as well as staying in hostels. They have honestly been brilliant and I haven’t been nervous at all. I felt very welcomed into the group when I started my tour and have loved the freedom to explore different countries. David has been great with organising activities and making sure the group is happy as well as giving advice on places to visit in your free time. He’s also great at picking out bars! The places that I’ve been have been amazing. After this trip, I’m sure to book another one soon as I’ve had the best time ever!

One Journey Four (5) Countries 2024 - from Zagreb Tour

One Journey Four (5) Countries 2024 - from Zagreb

This tour with Elite Travels was busy - so much to see in so little time. Hotels and food were great. Best part was Damir, our guide for the entire trip. I've taken many tours and he stands out as the best of them all. He was excellent in every way - in giving us clear instructions, telling us what to expect for the day, very patient, answered all out questions, and was very knowledgeable of the places we visited, including their histories. Our driver, Tatiana, was not just an expert driver, but very helpful and kind. Our English speaking local guides were all good, but I would point out Kristina as the best. She had all kinds of surprises for us, including giving me a dance lesson on a local dance and writing my name in cyrilic alphabet. Scars and stories from the war of the 1990s are heartbreaking but I deeply appreciated seeing and hearing them firsthand. Travel must be an educational experience of both the good and bad. So thank you, Elite Travels for a wonderful 10 day journey!

Discover Croatia & Slovenia (Multi country) Tour

Discover Croatia & Slovenia (Multi country)

I (34F) took this tour with my parents (65) and we loved it! Their initial plan was to take a roadtrip through Slovenia, Croatia, and Montenegro, but doing it by themselves without speaking the language seemed like it could be problematic, and this turned out to be so much better. Everything exceeded my expectations, including accommodation and meals. The local tour guides in each city were great, most were upbeat, insightful, and patiently answered ALL questions with a great attitude. Most of all, Blanš (hope I'm spelling it right), our main guide throughout the whole trip, was incredibly helpful and added significant value with her local and archeological knowledge (her tour of Diocletian's Palace was definitely a highlight). The only issue I can point out is a small detail with the tour description. I booked this tour instead of others because it said the max group size was 36, which was not the case. However, I don't feel like it ended up being a problem at all and the group was managed well, so although the information was incorrect, I'm glad I booked this one instead of others. Overall, I would definitely recommend it!

What people love about Croatia And Slovenia Tours

Fantastic tour from beginning to end! Our Tour Director, Hannah, was awesome! She was fun, very knowledgeable about all the areas we visited and went out of her way to add special things to our itinerary that made the trip extra memorable. Highly recommend this tour (beautiful countries!) and Trafalgar!
Amazing trip! Everything was well planned and taken care of. Our travel director, Karin, blew me away with her attention to detail, knowledge of each place we visited and how well informed she kept the group throughout. Coach is VERY comfortable and always kept clean. The scenery throughout the entire country is breathtaking, I couldn't even take my eyes off the views from the coach while on route to the next stop. The history we learnt from our guide and local experts made it even more beautiful. Restaurants and hotels were all well chosen and did not disappoint. This is my first Insight Vacations trip and definitely will not be my last!
