Life Changing

To be able to follow in the footsteps of Jesus from His birth, life, death and resurrection is truly a life changing experience.

We visited the ancient and Holy Lands of Bethlehem and Jerusalem. I can’t describe the feeling of being able to touch, smell and feel the ground that Jesus walked on, and to visit the sites where He performed his miracles and where our most beloved Bible stories took place.

This pilgrimage will open you up to a deeper connection and appreciation for your faith than you've ever experienced before.

RIVER OF TRADITION,

Fortresses of faith, an 11-day pilgrimage cruise.

This unique Danube pilgrimage begins in magical Munich, the capital of Bavaria. Then we will travel to the nearby Dachau concentration camp and remember the more than 2,000 heroic Catholic priests who refused to go along with Nazi tyranny. After a visit to Germany’s most historic Marian Shrine, we’ll board our elegant cruise ship for an enchanting cruise down the Danube docking in the imperial cities of Vienna and Budapest. Our pilgrimage themes: – Finding God in the beauty of His creation – How the Catholic Church built Western civilization – and How the greatest fortresses of Europe have been its saints and Catholic heroes

Our voyage on the Danube, one of the most historic rivers in the world, we’ll explore how the Catholic Tradition is like a river of living water , flowing from Christ in the apostles to us and carrying us forward into new adventures. As we sail along, we’ll also be admiring the many picturesque castles and vineyards that dot the riverbanks and be visiting some of the most impressive of European abbeys. So don’t miss this once in a lifetime opportunity to experience saints, castles, and cathedrals, quaint towns and delectable food, all aboard a ship that will be entirely reserved for us. And yes, our Eucharist each day will be celebrated in some of the most stunning churches of Europe.

And don’t miss out on the optional post-cruise extension – four glorious days in one of the hidden gems of Europe, Krakow, made famous by its most illustrious archbishop, St. John Paul II. We will visit Czestochowa, shrine of the famous Black Madonna, and Wadowice, where Karol Wojtyla spent his childhood. At Divine Mercy Shrine we will honor St Faustina Kowalska who died in Krakow and venerate the Divine Mercy image, copies of which have gone all over the world from the Shrine in Krakow.

In the afternoon, we have a one-hour walking tour of the Munich City Center followed by a welcome dinner in a local restaurant. Overnight in Munich. (B. Special dinner)

October 23, Wednesday, DAY 4: ALTOTTING – MARIAN SHRINE – PASSAU CRUISE EMBARKATION

Following breakfast, we board our bus and drive through the beautiful Bavarian countryside to Altotting, often called “The Lourdes of Germany” due to the thousands of pilgrims coming here every year for healing. Today the shrine attracts over one million pilgrims each year. Many crutches and other votives on display here testify to the healings attributed to the intercession of Our Lady of Altotting. In 1980 Pope John Paul II made a pilgrimage here. A young Joseph Ratzinger came here with his father when growing up, and it is known to be one of his favorite shrines long before he became Pope or even a Cardinal. Many young people from Germany make pilgrimages here in the summertime, often walking for 50 miles or more on their journey. Here we see the “Black Madonna,” a wooden statue of the Virgin Mary. Opposite the altar, the hearts of the Bavarian Dukes, Kings, and Electors are stored in richly decorated silver urns as a special sign of their deep loyalty to the Bavarian National Shrine. Among them is also the heart of the fairy tale King Ludwig II. We also visit the Basilica of St. Anna, the Holy Chapel, the Collegiate Church, and the treasury, housing the gifts donated to the Basilica. Celebrate Mass at St. Konrad Monastery. Following time for an independent lunch, we depart for Passau, where we embark on the cruise ship, our comfortable home for the next seven nights. Settle into our luxurious cabins, and enjoy a welcome cocktail and dinner on the ship. Overnight Cruise. (B.L.D)

Visit St. Peter′s Cathedral for a guided tour of one of Germany’s most prominent examples of Gothic architecture. We celebrate Mass in Regensburg before returning to the ship for lunch (included) or have an independent lunch (at leisure) on land. This afternoon there is an Optional Tour to Weltenburg Abbey* , the oldest beer-producing Abbey in Germany, or you may choose to stay on the ship and relax. Dubrovnik,    Medjugorje and little bit of Relaxation

Join Mater Dei ®  as they team up with "On Mission" , from the Diocese of Green Bay, Wisconsin ,  on a wonderful pilgrimage to  Croatia and Bosnia & Herzegovina . We will visit the gorgeous and historic city on the blue Adriatic Sea coast,  Dubrovnik , the "Pearl of the Adriatic". Stay at a small resort in a quaint village of  Mlini , just outside of Dubrovnik. Witness the beauty of  Kravica Falls , and relax at the coastal town of  Neum . The main purpose of our  Marian  Pilgrimage  is to have a spiritual retreat at  Medjugorje , in Bosnia & Herzegovina. The Vatican has cleared the way for True Catholic Pilgrimages to visit Medjugorje, and Mater Dei is answering the call! Since we love Mary, we will stay near Apparition Mountain at the peaceful and humble pilgrim accommodations served by Mirjana , one of the visionaries of Medjugorje. As with all  Mater Dei  pilgrimages, a solid spiritual program accompanies the pilgrimage. Daily Mass, Daily Rosary, Daily Chaplet, Daily Meditations/Talks, and more.

Day 1: Depart for Rome

Make your way to your local airport, where you will board your overnight flight(s). Your meals will be served on board.

Day 2: Arrival in Rome

Welcome to Rome, also known as, “The Eternal City”. Upon arrival at Rome airport, collect your luggage in the baggage claim area, and continue to the Arrivals Hall, where you will be greeted by a tour escort and/or driver. You will make your way to the bus and transfer to your hotel. Following check-in, you will have free time to unpack and relax, or explore Rome on your own. Your tour escort may suggest places to visit. Later in the afternoon, your group will meet in the hotel lobby for a “Meet and Greet” with your fellow pilgrims and depart for Mass. Following Mass, you will attend a welcome dinner. After dinner, you will have the opportunity to walk to St. Peter’s Square as a group, for the Rosary (optional).

Day 3: Rome: Papal Audience - Trevi Fountain – Pantheon - Basilica of St. John the Lateran – Holy Stairs - Basilica of St. Mary Major

This morning we attend the Papal Audience in St. Peter’s Square or at the Audience Hall. The Audience is celebrated each Wednesday by His Holiness, Pope Francis (pending the papal schedule). Next Trevi Fountain area for some free time and lunch (on own). This afternoon, visit the oldest of the four major Basilicas in Rome, the Archbasilica of St. John the Lateran, the cathedral church and seat of the Bishop of Rome. Cross the street to the very steps that lead up to the praetorium of Pontius Pilate in Jerusalem which Jesus climbed on His way to trial during his Passion. Holy Mass will be celebrated by our priest at the Basilica of St. Mary Major, dedicated to Our Blessed Mother. This Basilica contains a relic from the manger of the infant Jesus. Dinner and overnight.

Day 4: Rome: St. Peter's Basilica - Vatican Museum - Appian Way - Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls - Catacombs

Today we tour St. Peter’s Basilica, built on the site where St. Peter the Apostle was martyred. Here, you’ll have the opportunity to view Michelangelo’s Pieta sculpture, pray at the tombs of Pope Benedict XVI and St. John Paul II. Next you will visit the Vatican Museum, where you can see the Tapestry Gallery, Raphael Rooms, and Sistine Chapel. After lunch, continue down the Appian Way, one of the earliest roads built in ancient Rome to the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls and the Catacombs. Dinner and overnight in Rome.

Day 5: Rome – Pantheon – Colosseum – Roman Forum

This morning after breakfast we will celebrate Mass. Following Mass we will visit the Pantheon, an ancient Roman building, that is renowned for its large concrete dome.  After lunch,  visit the Colosseum, also known as the Flavian Amphitheatre, was built in the first century AD and was the largest amphitheater in the Roman Empire. Christians were often persecuted in the Roman Empire, and many of them were martyred in the Colosseum. Some of the most famous Christian martyrs who died in the Colosseum include Saint Ignatius of Antioch, Saint Polycarp, and Saint Perpetua and Saint Felicitas. The Colosseum is a reminder of the persecution that early Christians faced, and it is also a symbol of their faith and courage. The Roman Forum was the heart of ancient Rome, and it was the site of many important government buildings, temples, and shops. It was also the place where public meetings were held and where the laws were debated and passed. The Roman Forum was a busy and bustling place. It was home to a wide variety of people, from wealthy aristocrats to poor laborers, and it was a place where people from all walks of life came together. Return to hotel for dinner and overnight.

Day 6: Rome – Orvieto – Bolsena - Assisi

We leave Rome and travel North through the Umbrian Hills to Orvieto. This incredible town sits on a volcanic high rock formation. Here we visit one of the most beautiful and most renowned Cathedrals in Italy. Because of its strategic location, it’s Christian history officially started in 1004, but, Orvieto was built over preexisting Etruscan era cave tunnels dating back 2,500 years, which some historians believe Christians used to celebrate Mass when Christianity was forbidden.  Next we visit nearby town of Bolsena and Cathedral housing the corporeal of the Miracle of the Eucharist which took place in 1262. Here we celebrate Mass. Continue to Assisi he hometown of St. Francis and St. Clare. Upon arriving check-in to your hotel. Dinner and overnight. Retire to your room for a restful night’s sleep.

Day 7: Assisi – Bevagna – Assisi

After breakfast, travel to Bevagna, a charming town in the heart of Umbria. Bevagna is not only a treasure of historical and artistic gems, but also a place of profound religious significance. Its rich Catholic heritage is evident in its numerous churches, monasteries, and religious institutions, each bearing witness to the town’s deep-rooted faith and devotion. Visit the Church of San Francesco which is located in Bevagna’s historic center. The Church of San Francesco is a haven for Franciscan spirituality. It’s simple yet elegant architecture reflects the Franciscan Order’s values of humility and simplicity. Inside, the church houses a beautiful fresco depicting the life of Saint Francis of Assisi. Continue to the Monastery of San Silvestro, on a hilltop overlooking Bevagna. The Monastery of San Silvestro offers a tranquil retreat for those seeking spiritual solace. Founded in the 13th century, the monastery has been a center of religious life for centuries. Its serene atmosphere and panoramic views of the surrounding countryside provide an ideal setting for contemplation and prayer. After lunch visit the Sanctuary of Madonna delle Grazie. This is a beloved pilgrimage site for Catholics in the region. The sanctuary, dating back to the 15th century, is home to a venerated statue of the Virgin Mary, believed to possess miraculous powers. Visitors come from far and wide to seek blessings and pray for intercession. Return to Assisi for dinner and overnight.

Day 8: Assisi (St. Francis)

As you visit the birthplace of St. Francis, you will become captivated as the atmosphere has not changed since St. Francis began his ministry, in the early 13th-century. You will start your tour at the St. Francis Basilica, visit his tomb of St. Francis, and have the opportunity to view a series of frescoes depicting his life, along with a few of the saint’s possessions. Followed by a visit to the Santuario Della Spogliazione where Blessed Carlo Acutis’ tomb is placed. Carlo is the first millennial to be declared Blessed who loved the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. From there, you will continue on a walking tour through this picturesque town, including the birthplace of St. Francis, and end with a tour of the Church that honors St. Clare, the foundress of the Poor Clare Sisters. This Saint followed the teachings of St. Francis very closely by also living a life of poverty and humility. Enjoy some free time on your own – you may take this time for additional prayer, shop in the many gift shops or enjoy a nice lunch. After lunch, you will board the bus, which will take you outside of the walls of Assisi, to the Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels. This is where St. Francis spent most of life. This Basilica is made up of two structures, both of which you will visit. The first structure, is the “Porziuncola”, which is where St. Francis founded his order of the Friar Minor (Franciscans). The second, is the “Capella del Transito”, which is the place of St. Francis’ death. During your time here, you will have the opportunity to visit the beautiful Rose Garden where St. Francis and other friars lived, as well as the cave where the Saint retired to pray. Return to the hotel for dinner and an overnight.

Day 9: Assisi - Gubbio - La Verna - Assisi

After breakfast, you will drive through the beautiful Umbrian mountains to Gubbio. Enjoy this medieval town with a visit of St. Francis Church, where you will be celebrating Mass. After Mass, visit a town that seems painted onto the hill, a succession of backdrops against which towers and houses stand out, all embraced by walls. The town had been freed by St. Francis from a terrible and fierce wolf who afflicted it. After lunch on your own, continue to La Verna, the place where St. Francis, over the years, had been seven times, the last time in 1224 where he received the stigmata. Here you will be able to pray in the Chapel of the Stigmata, the Basilica and the Chapel of Saint Mary of the Angels. You will also be able to admire the beautiful artworks of Andrea della Robbia. Return to Assisi for dinner and your last overnight.

Day 10: Return Home

After an early breakfast and heartfelt farewells, your group will leave by motor coach and transfer to the Rome Fiumicino airport for return flights home.

Daily Itinerary

Day 1 usa to the holy land.

Your spiritual pilgrimage begins as you depart the USA on an overnight flight.

Day 2 Welcome to the Holy Land

You will be welcomed to the Holy Land by our airport representative and transferred to your Bethlehem hotel. Enjoy dinner before retiring for the night.

Day 3 Bethlehem, Bethany & Ein Karem

In Bethlehem, visit the cave revered as Jesus’ birthplace, which now resides in the world’s oldest functioning church (Luke 2:1-7). Celebrate Mass in Bethlehem and then gaze out over Shepherds’ Field, where the angels first proclaimed the Good News. Visit Bethany, the home of Lazarus, Mary and Martha.  Here, Jesus visited on several occasions and raised Lazarus from the dead (John 11). Travel to Ein Karem, the village where John the Baptist was born and the Virgin Mary visited Elizabeth prior to our Lord’s birth (Luke 1:26-40). Visit the Church of St. John, the birthplace of John the Baptist.

Day 4 Qasr El Yehud, Wadi Qelt, Jericho, Qumran & Dead Sea

Visit and renew your baptismal vows at the baptismal site of Qasr el Yahud, where tradition says Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist. Just off the Roman road that Jesus “walked” is the Wadi Qelt gorge, the site of the Monastery of St. George. Journey to Jericho (considered the oldest city in the world) to visit the ruins of the ancient city conquered by Joshua (Josh. 6:1). From Jericho, in the distance, you can see the traditional site of the Temptation of Jesus (Matt. 4:1). Celebrate Mass in the Church of the Good Shepherd in Jericho near a sycamore tree and remember Zacchaeus, who climbed a sycamore to see Jesus (Luke 18-19). Travel to Qumran, where the Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered in 1947. End your day with the opportunity to take a dip in the mineral-laden waters of the Dead Sea.

Day 5 Cana, Nazareth & Mount of Precipice

Visit the Franciscan Wedding Church at Cana, the site of Jesus’ first miracle, where He changed water into wine (John 2). Continue on to Nazareth, Jesus’ boyhood home (Matthew 2:23), and celebrate Mass in the Basilica of the Annunciation. You will also see the House of the Holy Family, St. Joseph’s Workshop and St. Joseph’s Church (Luke 2:41-52; Matt. 2:19-23). Stand atop the Mount Precipice, where Luke describes how Jesus was rejected by those in the synagogue after He taught them. Filled with anger, they “led Him unto the brow of the hill whereon their city was built, that they might cast Him down headlong” (Luke 4: 29).

Day 6 The Galilee

Enjoy beautiful Capernaum, the center of Jesus’ ministry, and visit the synagogue located on the site where Jesus taught (Matt. 4:13, 23). Sail across the Sea of Galilee, reflecting on the gospel stories of Jesus calming the storm. Listen to Jesus’ words from His Sermon on the Mount at the Mount of Beatitudes (Matt. 5-7) and celebrate Mass at the Church of the Beatitudes. At Tabgha, the traditional location of the feeding of the 5,000, explore the Church of the Loaves and Fish (Luke 9:10-17). Take a moment to reflect and pray in the Chapel of the Primacy, where Peter professed his devotion to the risen Christ (John 21). In Magdala, once home to Mary Magdalene, visit a recently discovered first-century synagogue.

Day 7 Mount Tabor, Mount Carmel & Emmaus

As you stand on Mount Tabor, contemplate what it must have been like for Saints Peter, James and John to behold the glory of the Transfigured Christ (Matt. 17:2). Celebrate Mass at the Church of the Transfiguration. Continue on your journey to Mount Carmel, where Elijah defeated the prophets of Baal (1 Kings 18). Biblically, Mount Carmel is referenced most often as a symbol of beauty and fertility.  To be given the “splendor of Carmel” was to be blessed indeed (Isa 35:2). In Emmaus, you’ll see the traditional site where Jesus appeared to two disciples after His resurrection.

Day 8 Jerusalem

Be inspired by the breathtaking beauty of Jerusalem (“the Golden City”) as you stand on the Mount of Olives, the place from which Jesus ascended into heaven forty days after His resurrection (Acts 1:9-12). Visit the Church of Pater Noster, walk the Palm Sunday Road, stopping briefly at the tear-shaped Dominus Flevit Church, where Jesus wept over Jerusalem.  Celebrate Mass in the Garden of Gethsemane, where Jesus prayed before His crucifixion (Matt. 26:36-44). On Mount Zion, see the House of the High Priest Caiaphas, where Jesus was imprisoned the night of His arrest (Matt. 26:57-65). Nearby is the Upper Room, revered as the location of the Last Supper (Mark 14:12-26). Conclude your day by visiting the Church of the Dormition of Mary.

Day 9 Jerusalem & the Old City

Take time to pray at the Western Wall, which is all that remains of Herod’s Temple. Sit on the Teaching Steps where Jesus once taught. Take a leisurely stroll down the Cardo, the main street of the Old City, where modern shops stand between ancient ones.  View the Pool of Bethesda, where Jesus performed the Sabbath miracle of healing (John 5:1-31), and sing a hymn in the Church of St. Anne, renowned for its beautiful acoustics. At Herod’s Antonia Fortress, see where Jesus was brought before Pontius Pilate (Luke 23:1-11). Walk the Via Dolorosa, “the Way of the Cross,” and celebrate the Mass of the Resurrection at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.

Walk to Mary pilgrimage brings thousands to ‘grounds where Mary appeared’

Walk to Mary

By Francesca Pollio Fenton

CNA Staff, May 2, 2024 / 07:00 am

Thousands of pilgrims come together each year to take part in the annual Walk to Mary , which takes place on the first Saturday of May in Wisconsin. The 21-mile pilgrimage starts at the National Shrine of St. Joseph in De Pere, Wisconsin, and ends at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Champion in Champion , Wisconsin.

The Walk to Mary will take place on May 4 this year and includes several “join in” points along the route that offer participants unable to walk the entire distance to participate. These locations shorten the pilgrimage length, allowing pilgrims of all ages to take part in what is a spiritual and physical test in perseverance.

This year’s pilgrimage is particularly special as the participants will be walking similar stretches that the perpetual pilgrims and Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament on the Marian Route will be walking during the National Eucharistic Pilgrimage this June.

The National Eucharistic Pilgrimage will be making a stop at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Champion on June 16, where there will be a Mass celebrated and a large Eucharistic rosary procession.

Father Joseph Aytona, CPM, rector of the National Shrine of Our Lady of Champion, told CNA in an interview that the Marian Route of the National Eucharistic Pilgrimage was actually named in honor of Our Lady of Champion.

“It is an honor to pray over this path during the Walk to Mary and, in a real way, ‘prepare the way of the Lord and make straight his paths’ for when he arrives in June through the National Eucharistic Pilgrimage,” he said.

Since 2023, a segment of the Walk to Mary has been designed to accommodate children, families, and anyone who wants to participate in the pilgrimage but is challenged by the longer distances. This 1.7-mile route, called “The Walk With the Children,” merges into the last half a mile of the longer route.

Aytona shared that they are expecting more than 6,000 pilgrims from around the world to attend this year’s Walk to Mary.

“Participants walk down everyday streets and trails through the Green Bay area, led by a carried statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary,” he explained. “They pray the rosary, sing hymns, and silently reflect on the intentions they are walking for. It’s always a beautiful display of faith for the world to see.”

Aytona compared the walk to a “mini-version of the Camino de Santiago in Europe,” adding that “the Walk to Mary draws people to the heart of pilgrimage — the opportunity for one to draw closer to the Lord and for him to draw closer to you — but all through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. Joseph.”

The final destination of the walk is also particularly special as the Shrine of Our Lady of Champion is the first and only approved Marian apparition in the United States.

On Oct. 9, 1859, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to a young Belgian woman named Adele Brise in the woods near present-day Champion, Wisconsin. Seeing the beautiful lady dressed in dazzling white with a crown of stars around her head, Brise asked the woman who she was.

The lady replied: “I am the Queen of Heaven who prays for the conversion of sinners, and I wish you to do the same.”

The Blessed Mother then told the young girl to “gather the children in this wild country and teach them what they should know for salvation. Teach them their catechism, how to sign themselves with the sign of the cross, and how to approach the sacraments; that is what I wish you to do.”

The apparition was approved by Bishop David Ricken of the Diocese of Green Bay in 2010.

Karmen Lemke, executive director of Catholic Charities at the Diocese of Green Bay, called the 21-mile pilgrimage “absolutely life-changing.”

This year marks Lemke’s third time participating in the Walk to Mary; however, her first two experiences hold a special place in her heart.

“My first walk, the full 21 miles, was in 2022, and my inspiration for participating was to join my friend Doris Lamers, who was diagnosed with glioblastoma brain cancer,” Lemke shared with CNA in an interview.

“The Blessed Mother has been an important person in her life and the Walk to Mary was something she really wanted to do. A few days before I asked again if she wanted to walk, even if we did the short version, and she quickly replied: ‘I want to walk and I want to do the whole thing,’” she recalled.

Lemke said that will be a day she will “forever treasure.”

“The weather was perfect, but our conversations along the walk were priceless,” she said. “We prayed the rosary and talked about life in general. We met so many wonderful people along the way, sharing stories of why they walk.”

In 2023, Lemke and Lamers participated in the walk again, along with Lamers’ sister and niece; however, due to the progression of the cancer, Lemke pushed Lamers in a wheelchair for the last seven miles of the walk.

“Upon our arrival at the shrine, Doris received a special blessing from Father Joseph [Aytona]. It was wonderful. I know that Doris knew exactly what was going on and was grateful for the day.”

Lamers passed away on Sept. 20, 2023.

“This year will hold a different meaning for us,” Lemke said. “We know that Doris will be with us and she’ll be saying, ‘Come on girls, you can do the whole route!’”

As for what Lemke has taken away from participating in the Walk to Mary, she said she has come to see “that anyone can do it with a little encouragement and not a lot of necessary training. I was moved by the number of people and their love for Mary and the love for their faith. It was a true sense of community.”

Aytona said he hopes that participants “are led to a deeper devotion to Our Lord Jesus.”

“True devotion to Mary always brings us to Jesus, and when people step foot on the grounds where Mary appeared, I hope they have an encounter with her that ultimately leads them to profound encounters with the merciful and divine love of Christ,” he added.

News | Long line forms at first Orange County stop in tour of St. Jude relic

catholic pilgrimage tours 2024

The relic is a bone fragment that is encased in a wooden reliquary carved in the form of an arm appearing to give a blessing; Catholic Church officials say the bone piece was separated several centuries ago from St. Jude Thaddeus’ remains laid to rest at St. Peter’s Basilica.

St. Jude the Apostle, a cousin of Jesus, is one of the most venerated of the saints and is one “people turn to when desperate, having tried everything else, feeling lost or hopeless,” church officials said.

And in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, officials hope the relic’s pilgrimage to the United States will offer comfort, Fr. Carlos Martins, who organized the tour that is passing through more than 100 American cities, said in a statement.

“Many still grieve a loved one claimed by the virus, numerous folks suffer the effects of long COVID and other pandemic-related medical conditions. Long-term isolation has led to depression for many and deterioration in mental health,” he said. “The Apostle’s visit is an effort by the Catholic Church to give comfort and hope to all who need it.”

A large crowd is expected at the Christ Cathedral on Tuesday, April 30, where the relic will be on display from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m., Diocese of Orange officials said. On Wednesday, May 1, it will be on display at Sts. Simon & Jude Catholic Church in Huntington Beach from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m., and on Thursday at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in La Habra, during the same hours.

During Monday’s visit to Santiago de Compostela Catholic Church in Lake Forest, Fr. Al Baca, director of the diocese’s Office of Ecumenism and Inter-religion, which is sponsoring the event, said he saw people of all ages in the long line that had formed as people waited their turn to stand before the large glass case holding the wooden reliquary.

Many bowed their foreheads toward the relic, placing their hands to the glass. They held prayer cards, rosaries, photos of loved ones and other items to the glass to receive a blessing.

“It is really quite beautiful,” Baca said. “It is really inspiring.

“When you are talking about a saint like St. Jude, people know this is the cousin of Jesus,” he added. “That just brings it home, because it is what they know from the Bible.”

The relic will also visit an Armenian orthodox church while in Orange County, Baca said. Sharing the opportunity was another reason he said he asked for permission to invite the tour to stop here.

“Like us, they venerate the saints and they believe that relics are a tangible channel of God’s grace and healing,” he said.

Melannie Rivamonte said she couldn’t afford to travel to visit holy sites, but this brought an opportunity closer to home. As she bowed her head in veneration before the display, she held several photographs in her hand.

“I thought of a lot of people I wanted to pray for,” she said. “A lot of people in my family, a lot of people who passed away already, and also for myself.”

Steve Rapp visited the Lake Forest church from Hemet.

“I’ve worn St. Jude medals almost all my life,” he said, his voice catching as he described how “very special” the visit had been for him. “This is as close on this earth I’m ever going to get to Jesus. It’s very, very moving and very important to us.”

Relic of St. Jude makes a stop at cathedral in Garden Grove during SoCal tour

Thousands of the faithful made their way to Orange County to experience an opportunity of many lifetimes.

For the first, and likely only time in history, the relic of St. Jude was taken out of Rome and has been touring the United States since September.

Several thousand people are expected to venerate the relic where it is on display at the Christ Cathedral in Garden Grove.

This is the first time the relic of St. Jude has left Rome in 1,700 years according to the director of the Vatican Pilgrimage.

Antoinette Chirgwin waited three hours before the doors opened Tuesday afternoon and said the reason for her visit was her mother who is battling cancer.

“When else am I going to do that?” said Chirgwin. “St. Jude is the saint of the impossible. My mom is battling cancer.”

This is her mother’s fourth cancer diagnosis and for believers like Chirgwin, St. Jude represents hope.

“For the peace in the whole world, pray for the people who pass away,” wished Huntington Park resident, Mary Gray, who was visiting the Christ Cathedral.

The wooden carving that holds a bone fragment of St. Jude’s arm is displayed in a glass case in front of the Christ Cathedral. Each person in line is given ten seconds in front of the relic.

Those few moments are said to have brought miracles in the relic’s tour across the United States according to Carlos Martins, the director of Vatican Pilgrimage of the major relics of St. Jude.

“Her spine took a took a twist right in between her shoulder blades,” said Martins of a woman he met on the tour. “She came to the event and the next day she woke up and her brace wouldn’t fit her. Her spine is perfectly straight.”

Martins explained why many faithful hold such an infinity to St. Jude.

“He [St. Jude] being such a hero to people. It is very meaningful to people to encounter his relics. It facilitates an intimacy,” said Martins. “This arm, many times embraced the body of the world's savior. This is how close we are to Jesus to this moment”

The relic of St. Jude will be at the Christ Cathedral in California until the end of May.
