In total Brussels has 19 tram lines. You obviously won't take them all. Three lines are interesting and deserve to be known to all tourists because they are very practical:
- 5 online – If you are thinking of going to Brupark, visit the Heizel, the Atomium ou Mini Europe , this line is an alternative to Metro 6
- Lines 92/94 : it crosses the top of Brussels. You can use it to go from the Royal Palace and Brussels Park to the Courthouse and Avenue Louise (passing through the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium, the Notre-Dame du Sablon church)

3. Brussels Tram Map
If you travel by public transport, it is better to look at the network plan in advance. There are great possibilities for getting around with the STIB in Brussels: bus, tram, metro… Here is the map of the STIB network
2. How do I pay for the tram in Brussels?
Now that you know where the trams go and their map, find out how to pay. Be aware that checks are sometimes frequent on certain lines. An oversight can cost you dearly…. It's easy to pay. Inside each vehicle: bus, tram or metro station there is a contactless ticket validator. Thanks to this, you can pay with your contactless card: Bancontact, Mastercard, visa, smartwatch and Smartphone with Google Pay, Apple Pay, Fitbit Pay and Garmin Pay etc… The red validator also reads MOBIB cards. If you do not want to pay “contactless”, the Mobib card can be purchased in advance.
How to pay with your bank card for the tram or bus?
If you want to pay with your contactless card, it's easy. All you need is a bank card (debit or credit). This contactless payment is a quick & easy way to pay. No more queues at the machine to buy a tram ticket.
If, after your journey, you wish to consult the amount paid, all you have to do is go to the website www.stib.be and create an account. You will then be able to see how much your journey cost you.
Where can I buy a Brussels MOBIB tram card?
If you don't have contactless payment or a bank card, to buy a ticket or a mobib card, all you have to do is go to a "GO machine" or STIB point of sale. Also some partner bookstores and supermarkets sell MOBIB cards
Barely a foot in the Belgian capital, Pierre launched “InsideBrussels.be” more than 10 years ago, the idea is simple: “What to do? Where to go to eat or have a drink? “. Entrepreneur at heart, this is not his first project! Far from there. EatLocal.io; KingCard.be, Bricabrac.be … Like wine, with time the project improves! Pierre does not hesitate to share his favorites and his best addresses of Brussels restaurants that he could recommend to you with his eyes closed.

Trams in Brussels
With tens of lines which take you to even the furthest reaches of the town, the Brussels tram network is one of the most extensive in the world .
The tram system in Brussels is one of the largest in the world and trams run both underground and above ground, which can confuse visitors thinking that the underground tram lines are the Brussels Metro , especially lines 3 and 4.
Currently, Brussels has 17 tram lines that run from the city centre to the outskirts. Some lines are worth highlighting as they pass through some of the capital’s top attractions:
- Lines 92 and 94 : Tram 92 runs from Schaerbeek to Fort-Jaco and tram 94 runs from Avenue Louise to the Tram Museum. Both lines run on the upper part of town and stop in the Parc de Bruxelles (Brussels Park), the Royal Palace of Brussels , Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium , Église Notre Dame du Sablon , le Palais de Justice and Avenue Louise.
- Lines 32 and 33 : Although trams 32 and 33 only run from 8 pm onwards, both lines are very similar to the premetro lines 3 and 4. They both link the Gare du Midi with the city center, passing by Boulevard Anspach, home to numerous monuments and top things to see like the Grand Place and La Bourse.
- Line 51 : Stops at Brupark ( Atomium and Mini Europe ). It is a good alternative to the metro line 6.
Timetable and frequency
The tram system timetable is very similar to the Brussels Metro . However, it depends on each line. Most open at 6 am and run until midnight.

The tram in brussels.
Brussels has 19 tram lines operated by the STIB. Some of them run mainly on dedicated lanes and even underground (such as the "north-south" axis served by lines 3 and 4 or the "middle ring" served by lines 7 and 25).
They mainly cover the Brussels region, but some lines also serve outlying municipalities (such as Tervueren).
Numerous projects to extend the network are underway or under study.
The improvement of passenger comfort and safety is also taken into account through the redevelopment of certain stops in this perspective.
The latest news from the STIB, as well as information on the networks, timetables and transport conditions can be found on the stib.be website

Connecting to the Tram and Metro at Bruxelles-Midi station
How to make the transfer to the tram stops and Metro station when arriving by train at Bruxelles-Midi/Brussel-Zuid station
The general guide to using Bruxelles-Mdi (French spelling) / Brussel-Zuid (Dutch spelling).
SMTJ has learnt from experience that if you are not familiar with the labyrinth that is Bruxelles-Midi/Brussel-Zuid station, making the transfer to the tram and metro there can be easier said than done. Hence this guide to arriving by train at Bruxelles-Midi and connecting to the tram and Metro services at the station.
Bruxelles-Midi/Brussel-Zuid station lives up to the English translation of its name, Brussels South, with a location some distance from the city centre, but it has excellent connections to the heart of Bruxelles, so we can help with pointing you in the right direction.
Before transferring to the Metro or Tram at Bruxelles-Midi, check whether other mainline stations in the cental area are convenient for your final destination in Bruxelles/Brussels city centre. Brussel-Centraal station is as convenient for 'Le Grand Place as any of the Metro and tram stops.
If you're heading for the area around The Council of European Union offices take a train (and not the metro) to Bruxelles-Schuman station. OR If you're heading for the area around The European Parliament building take a train (and not the metro) to Bruxelles-Luxembourg station.
Taking the Metro:
The signs pointing the way to the Metro are much more subtle than can be typically found at other major stations with metro links. We had used Bruxelles-Midi several times without realising it had a Metro station.
When navigating the station look out for the capital 'M' on the signs - you probably had to look twice, but on the above image it is the symbol at the far left on the second row.
When entering the le ‘Couloir Principal'/'Hoofdgang' from any high speed train arrival, turn to the right and then look for this sign shown above. It will be on the left of this main passage way (note the easy to miss 'M'.)
Though if you have arrived by train at voies/sporen/platforms tracks 9-22, then when you walk down the main passage way, this entrance to the Metro will be over to the right.
Note that the style of the letter 'M' has changed and this sign is also pointing the way to Metro lines 2 and 6 - these are the only Metro lines which serve Bruxelles-Midi/Brussel Zuid.
When you have descended to the Metro station concourse - what you will see ahead of you is actually one of the tram stops (see the tram notes below). Don't confuse this access to the trams with the access to the Metro. The Metro has its own ticket gates and on the other side of these you will have to descend to another level below, in order to access the Metro trains.
The tourist sites most easily accessed by Metro when arriving at Bruxelles-Midi by train:
(1) For the Atomium take Metro Line 6 (direction Roi Baudouin) to Heysel station.
(2) For the museum complex at Parc du Cinquantenaire take either Metro Line 2 or Line 6 (direction Simomis Elisabeth) to Arts-Loi/Kunst Wet station. Transfer there to Metro Line 1 (direction Stockel) or Metro Line 5 (direction Hermann Debroux) and leave these trains at Merode station.
The Metro lines 2 and 6 don't connect Bruxelles-Midi station to the heart of the city, but tram lines 3 and 4 do - with stops at Anneessens , Bourse , De Brouckere and Rogier . Ignore tram line 51 if you're heading to the city centre as it doesn't call at those stops.
To access tram lines 3 and 4 follow the same signs above which lead to the Metro. Tram lines 3 and 4 are underground in Bruxelles-city centre - which is why they're often referred to a tad confusingly as 'Pre-Metro' When you have descended from the le ‘Couloir Principal'/'Hoofdgang by escalator and turned to the right the pre-metro tram stops will be ahead of you.
*Tram line 32 serves the same city centre stops as lines 3 and 4, but it only operates after 8pm.
This map (PDF) shows the Metro routes across the city and the 'pre-metro' tram lines 3 and 4.
This map (large PDF) is of the full public transport network in Bruxelles/Brussels.

Getting around
Brussels is very simple to navigate and easily accessible. If you want to travel around the capital, it’s better to choose soft mobility and public transport.
Brussels is a "30 city" . This means that the speed limit in the capital is 30 km/h for all road users. Exceptions to this rule are certain major roads (where the speed limit could be 50 or 70 km/h, look out for speed limit signs) and residential areas, where the speed limit is 20 km/h. These speed limits apply to all road users (cars, vans, trucks, motorbikes, mopeds, buses, bicycles, scooters, etc.). Only trams, emergency services and snowploughs are not subject to the new speed limits.
The entire Brussels-Capital Region is a low emission zone . This means that the most polluting vehicles are not allowed to drive here. The regulations apply to passenger cars, vans up to 3.5 tonnes, buses and coaches. Whether they are registered in Belgium or not. Not sure if you can enter Brussels with your vehicle? Check it out on lez.brussels .
