Amazon FAQs
Thinking about an Amazon trip? Here’s a list of frequently asked questions we often hear from our guests. Visit our Amazon Vacation Planning page for in-depth Amazon travel tips.
For many reasons, the best time to visit the Amazon is from June – November. During this time, the Amazon Rainforest experiences its dry season – meaning the water levels are lower, allowing access to forested areas and greater opportunities for land-based exploration excursions. However, it’s important to note that as the largest rainforest in the world, the Amazon experiences approximately 250 days of rain a year, spanning all months. Despite having varying seasons, like the “wet” season (December – May), travelers should expect a few hours of light rain at any point in the year. The rain is what continues to keep the rainforests and its rare flora and fauna alive.
Yes, traveling to the Amazon Rainforest is safe! In Brazil’s main center for visiting the Amazon – Manaus, you’ll always have guided activities with expert naturalist guides to help you navigate the jungle. Outside of town make sure you have all recommended vaccinations, according to your doctor and that you take a Malaria prophylaxis. Although along the Rio Negro, where most travelers go, there are very few mosquitoes!
All Amazon lodges and cruises offer jungle walks guided by local professionals to get to know the vegetation. Discover the importance of medicinal plants, spot vibrant macaws and parrots, and learn to identify the calls of rare animals. While listening to the sounds of the animals in the jungle is a common experience, actually spotting the fauna can be difficult. Travelers may consider the Pantanal wetlands for wildlife spotting, as it is less dense than the Amazon. Piranha fishing is also very popular. Local guides can also take you to different areas where other animal species can be seen, such as the pink river dolphins or macaws. Alligator (jacare) spotting at night is one of the most fascinating activities.
In general, the Amazon Jungle is not dangerous for travelers! Animals in the Amazon are not aggressive, as there is plenty of food available. Even the aforementioned “alligator” is a “caiman,” the peaceful cousin of the crocodiles you have heard about from Australia and the Florida Everglades. Your guide will always make you aware of toxic plants or spiders. Most guides are from the local communities, knowing well the healing properties of the plants that surround you. The one element to be aware of is Malaria: there is no vaccination, rather prophylaxis you take before traveling to the Amazon and stop taking as soon as you depart.
If visiting the Amazon in Brazil, you’ll get to the Amazon rainforest mostly by flying into Manaus, or for a more remote experience, by flying into Alta Floresta, with its luxurious lodge, or into Tefé for the most remote experience possible. In Peru, the main access points are Puerto Maldonado, Manu and Iquitos. In Bolivia, it is Rurrenabaque, Coca in Ecuador and Leticia in Colombia.
No – There are different areas with different flora and fauna. The main difference is caused by the altitude. Most of the Brazilian part is at sea-level or only slightly above it, whereas in Peru, Ecuador, and Bolivia, the rainforest sits on higher ground. The higher, the less dense the fauna is. Therefore, for example, if you are interested in birding, you would prefer the Peruvian Rainforest, as, due to the fauna being less dense, it is easier to spot birds. The Peruvian Amazon also offers some of the most luxurious river cruise ships such as the Aria. The Brazilian Amazon Rainforest offers travelers a wide range of lodges and cruises. Embark on a large cruise ship such as Hurtigruten or Iberostar, or a small, intimate cruise such as the Tucano. The Ecuadorian Amazon boasts Yasuni National Park, home to millions of species of plants, birds, insects, and mammals.
Typically, you would stay at a lodge or cruise along the river. It depends on what kind of experience interests the traveler(s). The advantage of a lodge is that your stay in the Amazon Rainforest can begin at any time, whereas cruises have set departure dates. While cruises offer plenty of departure dates, it can be challenging to be on a strict schedule. On the other hand, the advantage of a river cruise is that you see a vast extent of the rainforest, with different animals and vegetation, without needing to turn back after each excursion. Cruises also tend to include a stop at local communities where you can experience and learn about the lives of Amazonian locals. Whether you experience the Amazon on a cruise ship or nestled in a lodge, you’re sure to have a once-in-a-lifetime adventure.

Puerto Maldonado
Puerto Maldonado is the heartland for Peruvian Amazon Rainforest tours. Its location in the south-eastern region of Peru makes it strategic to add to a visit to Machu Picchu or Cusco. A boat ride will take you from Puerto Maldonado down the Madre de Dios river to a comfortable jungle lodge. Here you can spot all kinds of unique wildlife, visit the Tambopata National Reserve, or the world's largest macaw clay lick, the Chuncho claylick.
Iquitos is the gateway to Amazon River exploration in the Peruvian Amazon. Lodges tend to be more rustic, but Iquitos is where the most luxurious Amazon River cruises embark. Iquitos city has a fascinating history, while just beyond the buildings, the dense rainforest seems to go on forever. River cruises sail around the Pacaya Samiria Reserve where you'll have ample opportunities for bird watching, sporting pink river dolphins, and maybe an elusive jaguar.
Manu National Park
Manu National Park is for off-the-beaten-path Amazon touring. This UNESCO World Heritage site spans an astonishing 1.5 million hectares of highly protected Peruvian Rainforest and is not easily accessible. Expect long car and boat rides through the jungles to get to your lodge, all the makings for a wild adventure!
Tambopata Research Center
The Tambopata Research Center is an eco-friendly lodge in the Peruvian Amazon near Puerto Maldonado. This research center is the only lodge within the Tambopata National Reserve, giving you prime opportunities for wildlife spotting. Ongoing research for the Macaw Project continues onsite.
Peru Highlights
Peru is filled with archaeological ruins, scenic landscapes, and delicious flavors. Must-see places in Peru include:
Hike the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu in four or two days. The Inca Trail is a 500-year old pathway where the elite Incas once entered into the “Lost City of the Incas”. Plan with your Peru for Less travel advisor in advance, Inca Trail permits tend to sell out even 6-months in advance.
Amazon Rainforest
Step into the lush Peruvian Amazon Rainforest and witness a spectacular array of wildlife in its natural habitat. Lodges in Puerto Maldonado are ideal for excursions and daily activities. Those looking for a more luxurious Amazon experience would love an Iquitos Amazon River cruise. Colorful macaws, giant tarantulas, and playful river otters are among the sights you’ll behold.
Cusco city has it all, archaeological ruins, colonial buildings, top-rated restaurants, and countless places to explore. Your Cusco City Tour will take you to the top highlights like Sacsayhuaman, Q’enko, the Cusco Cathedral, and more.
Arequipa is a picturesque town and also the second-largest city in Peru. Local markets, beautifully built colonial architecture, and El Misti volcano are among the things you’ll see while walking the cobblestone streets of the white city.
Lake Titicaca
Sail on the deep blue waters of Lake Titicaca and step on the reed Uros and Taquile floating islands. Some of the best weavers are found in this area so pick up some Peruvian textiles here for unique souvenirs.
Nazca Lines
The Nazca Lines are mysterious geoglyphs and geometric shapes drawn onto the desert floor hundreds of years ago by the Nazca culture. Little is known about them nevertheless, the Nazca Lines inspire awe in those who take a flight over them.
Lima is a mixture of modern city living and historical significance. Here you’ll find Central restaurant (ranked #6 by 50 Worlds Best), UNESCO World Heritage sites like Historic City Center with the San Francisco Convent, and the best shopping in Peru.

When is the best time to travel to the Amazon Rainforest?
The best time to visit the Amazon Rainforest in Peru is dependent on which region of the Amazon you prefer to experience. In the Northern Amazon, like Iquitos, the best time to visit is during the wet season or high water season from December-May in order to take advantage of boat excursions that elevate you closer up to the animals. In the Southern Amazon, like Puerto Maldonado, the best time to visit is during the dry season from May-September which conveniently correlates with the best time to visit Machu Picchu.
What are the best places to visit in the Peruvian Amazon Rainforest?
Do i need vaccinations for an amazon rainforest tour.
The CDC recommends yellow fever, hepatitis A, typhoid, and measles vaccines for traveling to Peru, though they are not required for entry. Malaria medication is recommended for remote parts of the jungle. All travelers should consult with their doctor before traveling.
How can I protect myself from mosquitoes in the Amazon Rainforest?
The best way to protect yourself from mosquito bites while on an Amazon Rainforest tour is to wear protective clothing and insect repellant. Clothing such as light-weight long sleeved shirts and long pants that cover exposed skin on legs can then be sprayed with insect repellant. Regularly reapply repellent to your skin and clothes as rain and sweat can reduce its efficacy.
What should I pack for an Amazon Rainforest tour?
The following are good things to pack for your visit to the Amazon Rainforest:
- Sturdy hiking shoes
- Waterproof case for phone/camera
- Waterproof sandals or flip flops
- Fast-dry clothing
- Personal medications
- Journal for jotting your thoughts and observations
- Water bottle
- Water-resistant jacket that is lightweight and easy to put in your day pack.
- Rain poncho
- Two bathing suits/swimming trunks
- Sweater or hoodie for the evening.
- One or two pairs of hiking pants for rugged rainforest walks
- One or two pairs of shorts
- One or two long sleeve shirts (100% cotton is great for the jungle)
- Three pairs of cotton socks
- Two to three short sleeve shirts
- Insect repellant with DEET
- Hand sanitizer
- Sunblock of at least 15 SPF
- Toiletries like toothbrush, toothpaste, face wash etc
- First aid kit with bandages, aloe, antibiotics, pain reliever, etc.
- Contact lenses and extra pair of eye-glasses if you wear glasses.
- Flashlight or headlamp with extra batteries
- Sun/rain hat
- Plastic bags (zip lock bags and a larger trash bag)
- Swiss army style knife
What is the ideal amount of time for an Amazon Rainforest tour?
The ideal amount of time for an Amazon Rainforest tour is 4-days and 3-nights. With both Amazon lodge and Amazon River Cruise itineraries using the first and last dates as respective arrival and departure days, the 4-day/3-night program includes 2 full days of jungle tours and maximizes your time in the Amazon.
Should I choose an Amazon jungle lodge or an Amazon river cruise?
If you want a luxury Amazon Rainforest experience, opt for high-end cruise options in Iquitos like Delfin. Amazon River Cruises feature amenities like air-conditioning and floor-to-ceiling windows with panoramic views of the jungle as you pass by in comfort.
Lodge experiences range from rustic to resplendent and can cater to many different price ranges. Lodges allow you to explore their expansive properties and provide special opportunities to spot animals.
Both experiences are unique and include daily excursions into the Amazon Rainforest with naturalist guides.
Is the Peruvian Amazon safe?
The Peruvian Amazon is a safe place to travel to, especially the areas visited on an organized tour arranged by Inca Expert. With violent crime virtually unheard of in touristic areas, the greatest safety concern comes from insect bites carrying yellow fever or malaria, or improperly handled food. You can protect yourself by having all recommended vaccinations, wearing insect repellent, and by eating at reputable restaurants. Travelers should avoid remote parts of the Peruvian Amazon where illegal mining and logging are prevalent.
How do I get to the Amazon Rainforest from Lima or Cusco?
Flights operate directly from Lima to Iquitos and Puerto Maldonado with daily schedules. Flights operate from Cusco to Iquitos three times a week, while daily flights fly from Cusco to Puerto Maldonado.
The bus journey from Cusco to Puerto Maldonado is 11-12 hours. Iquitos is not accessible by road and can only be easily accessed via flight.

Faq’s About Amazon Tours
How to choose an Amazon vacation
While planning trips to the rainforest, we often ask our travelers what kind of Amazon journey they’d like to embark on: Based at a lodge or on a riverboat cruise? Both great options, but have their unique characteristics. While planning trips to the rainforest, we often ask our travelers what kind of Amazon journey they’d like to embark on: Based at a lodge or on a riverboat cruise? Both great options, but have their unique characteristics.
- More flexibility , given there are no set departure dates
- A more in-depth experience , as you’ll be staying in the rainforest itself, where creatures of the jungle – including birds and monkeys – will be your neighbors
- More room for free-time roaming , as you’ll be free to explore nearby paths early in the morning or late in the afternoon, before and after your day’s activities
- The rustic elegance of your accommodations — with natural surroundings, thatched roofs and materials native to the region—giving travelers the feeling of really being in the rainforest
However, the tradeoffs of a lodge-based stay include occasional glitches like the electricity going out for short periods, supplies delayed from upriver, unstable or non-existent Wi-Fi, etc.
- First-Class Amenities: luxury riverboats are often considered “floating boutique hotels,” attended to by fully-trained staff and crew members, enjoying excellent food, air-conditioned rooms, regular access to hot water, and comfortable lounge areas and balconies.
- Covering more ground during short trips, allowing embarkations for day trips at a number of destinations along the river
- Trips to pristine locations: A cruise can allow you to discover places largely untouched by tourism, whereas the trails at most lodges are more well-trodden
- Easier excursions: With less hiking involved, excursions from cruises tend to be a bit easier, which is especially great for older or younger guests
What you’ll experience on a vacation in the Amazon
Explore the Amazon, one of the planet’s most diverse ecosystems, teeming with exotic flora and fauna. Witness the electrifying calls of howler monkeys in the treetops, spot the gleaming eyes of caimans during nighttime jungle safaris, and observe families of Giant otters on serene lakes. The Amazon also offers a unique cultural experience, with indigenous communities. Participate in mesmerizing ceremonies led by traditional shamans and capture the beauty of the rainforest and its rivers through your lens. Immerse yourself in the Amazon’s natural wonders and rich indigenous traditions
Is it safe to visit Amazon
While Amazon rainforest visits are generally safe, it’s crucial to be aware of potential risks, especially when delving deep into the jungle. Surtrek prioritizes your safety during Amazonian tours, whether on riverboat cruises or at luxury jungle lodges. We select top-rated accommodations with CPR-trained staff, first-aid supplies, and close communication with local health and security professionals. These accommodations serve fresh, properly prepared food and purified bottled water, while experienced local guides accompany you throughout your Amazonian journey. To further ensure a safe adventure, travelers can also follow some common-sense steps:
- Getting the appropriate vaccinations and medications before you go to the Amazon
- Protecting yourself from mosquito bites (using insect repellant, wearing long sleeve shirts…)
- Keeping a safe distance from wild animals and NOT provoking them
- Not drinking tap water or using ice cubes
- Rinsing fruit in purified water
- Keeping an eye on your luggage and take practical steps to avoid pick-pocketing in tourist areas
Best Time to experience the Amazon
The Amazon experiences distinct seasons, often referred to as the “low water” and “high water” seasons due to frequent rainfall. The ideal time to explore the Amazon basin, especially for rainforest hiking, is during the low-water season from June to November. Fewer daily showers, lower rivers, and accessible hiking trails make it easier to explore deeper parts of the jungle on foot. Additionally, the low-water season means fewer mosquitoes, and wildlife gathers around remaining wet areas, enhancing your chances of wildlife encounters. In contrast, the high-water season from December to May brings rising rivers, which facilitate waterway navigation but may flood some jungle trails
What to pack for the Amazon
Packing for an Amazonian rainforest adventure is a unique challenge. While the jungle heat is expected, travelers often overlook frequent heavy rains, jungle critters, weight limits on flights, and high humidity. Beyond the conditions, you’ll encounter extraordinary activities like piranha fishing, nocturnal river safaris, wildlife treks, and kayaking on the Amazon River. To ensure you’re well-prepared, Surtrek provides a detailed packing list after booking your unforgettable rainforest adventure. In general, we recommend including the following types of clothing and gear:

Getting to the Amazon
The Amazon region is vast, covering around 40% of all South America and spans into eight countries. Below, Surtrek has selected three of the most popular countries for accessing and experiencing the mysteries of the Amazonian rainforest:
- Ecuador: Access to the Ecuadorian Amazon is easy. After landing in the capital city of Quito, Surtrek guides will meet you and assist you with making a short 45-minute flight to the Amazon. Landing at a local airport, you will be transferred to a world-class eco-lodge or Amazonian riverboat via a 4×4 vehicle or a motorized canoe to begin an unforgettable adventure.
- Peru: Home to the second largest area of the Amazon, the Peruvian Amazon is also the most wildlife-rich. When you touch down in Lima, Surtrek partners will be there to welcome and accompany you throughout your lodge-based tour or Peru riverboat adventure . You will fly to one of two areas in Peru to experience for your Amazonian tour. Spend time in either in the northern Peruvian Amazon outside the city of Iquitos or in the southeastern Peruvian Amazon, where the most visited areas are the Tambopata National Reserve and Manu National Park (Manu is assessable via Cusco, so can be more easily combined with a Machu Picchu tour ).
- Bolivia: The Bolivian Amazon is just as biologically diverse as Brazil’s yet visited by fewer tourists. To begin your once-in-a-lifetime adventure here, upon your arrival in the Bolivian capital of La Paz, you will be assisted in flying to the town of Rurrenabaque – the gateway to the Bolivian rainforest. After being welcomed in that town, Surtrek representatives will transfer you to the local river’s dock for a motorized canoe ride into Madidi National Park and onward to your upmarket lodge, shrouded in the mysteries of the Amazonian rainforest.

"trip of a lifetime".
The lodge staff made both the celebration of our Anniversary and my birthday so very special!! The staff at the lodge were all wonderful and friendly… We saw all 7 species of monkeys that live in the area. We saw multiple sloths. Too many bird species to count. A family of 9 capybara. And so many other animals. Just amazing!!
"The Best!!"
I can’t say enough good things about this tour and the people who run it. My experience was so much more than I hoped for. My guide was extremely knowledgeable and helped me see tons of wildlife… The chef is incredible, the lodge itself is absolutely beautiful, and the people who work there are so kind, welcoming, and eager to tend to your every need or desire. I highly, highly recommend!
We had a wonderful experience with Grand Amazon Lodge & Tours. They made us feel at home in the jungle. Our guide went out of his way to make sure we got the most out of our experience, we spent so much time on the Amazon river and saw so much wild life, it’s truly fantastic. Our tour was also individualized, so it did not feel like we were actually doing a tour. I recommend this place to everyone!!!

Detailed Itinerary
The culinary delights and magnificent wildlife of the Amazon lowlands await you in Belém and Marajó !
Your tour starts in Belém , on the immense Amazon estuary, more than 100km inland.
In a truly unique atmosphere, where the tropical flora integrates with a superb “Art Nouveau” heritage, the “ Ver-O-Peso “ food market will offer a first glimpse of the exotic region.
This is a chance to sample rare local flavours by strolling through the dozens of multicoloured stalls. You will taste delicious dishes with exotic names such as Cupuaçu sorbet or Pato no Tucupi, a duck dish that numbs your lips; the Jambu leaves found in the sauce have anesthetic properties. An unusual multi-sensory experience that you won’t forget, rich in flavours, smells, sounds and colours.
One of our partners is the Goeldi zoological park, here you can discover the amazing tropical ecosystem. You will see rare animals that are difficult to find in the wild such as the blue macaw, the anaconda or the “king of the forest”, the jaguar.
You will be accompanied by a guide who will share with you his knowledge and understanding of the local natural environment.
Next stop – Marajó , “the shield island” or “Marajoara” in the local language. This island is situated opposite the town of Belém, in the middle of the Amazon delta. Almost the size of Switzerland, it reigns over the river and the Atlantic Ocean and is divided into two very distinct halves.
You will sail there along the Amazon River! It’s a 3 hour boat ride to reach the island and this will give you time to realize the incredible enormity of the Amazon river as it flows into the ocean.
The people live on the eastern side of the island on its beaches and fields. There are fazendas (large farms or ranches) and vast flooded plains where they raise buffalo; the main inhabitant of the eastern part of the island.
As the island is partly marshy, buffalo, which have inhabited the island as far back as people can remember, are an ideal alternative to horses for transport. Even the mounted police ride buffalo!
On the western side, a thick mangrove extends over the entire coastline, as well as a practically impenetrable inland forest . This is the kingdom of macaws, toucans and sloths.
Walking through the streets of Salvaterre , you will discover the lively local culture. From here you will go to your “pousada” (lodge). It is worth spending a little time visiting the surrounding villages which still hold traditional pottery workshops, a legacy of the local indigenous people and their extraordinary skills. It is a privileged moment to learn more about an indigenous civilization that lasted nearly a thousand years (400 to 1400 AD) and which, at its peak, had a population of more than 100,000. It’s also a good opportunity to bring back some original and ecological souvenirs and participate in the local economy at the same time!
For an authentic stay, you will be in a fazenda (ranch) hotel in the heart of Marajó Island. With simple but comfortable facilities and decor influenced by local crafts and materials you will find it easy to relax here during this island getaway.
You can discover how a local ranch works with no compromise on the comfort of your holiday.
The second part of your tour: From Manaus to Anavilhanas.
After discovering the incredible entrance to the Amazon forest with Belém and Marajó, you will take a flight of 2 hrs to the amazing city of Manaus built in the very heart of this huge tropical forest.
You will start your Amazon forest adventure in this great urban clearing, with the splendid Amazonas neo-Renaissance Theatre, a vestige of the transitory prosperity linked to the rubber making era.
With grandeur and decadence, this city and its inhabitants have been able to adapt over the course of time to alternative prosperous periods and economic decline. We want you to discover this fascinating and rich history and so offer the services of an experienced guide to take you on a captivating visit of Manaus, the capital of the state of Amazonia.
To top off this splendid visit, there’s nothing better than a cruise along its main waterways, a private cruise with a guide will take you from Manaus into the jungle, going up the Rio Negro, one of the two main tributaries of the majestic Amazon river.
Aboard a traditional style boat , exclusively for you and yours, you will arrive at an immense natural lake, the Acajatuba lake . This region is a true jewel of nature, home to the Anavilhanas archipelago and its 400 islands .
During this expedition in the labyrinth of igarapes, (tributaries connecting the rivers) your guide will suggest exclusive activities depending on the season, weather conditions and your desires. There are all sorts of things to do!
You can fish for piranha, go canoeing at night to see caimans, canoe through the Igapos (the submerged forest) or explore the jungle on foot and lots more! If you are lucky you may see a pod of botos, the famous pink Amazon dolphins .
You may even be able to swim among them, a wonderful experience never to be forgotten!
On this boat trip you will also meet the communities that live all year round on the banks of the rivers, the famous Ribeirinhos (literally inhabitants of the shore), the Caboclos, the mixed race locals who will show you some of their secrets of how to survive in this beautiful yet unforgiving environment. You can also meet the original Indian inhabitants of this isolated world, famous for their traditional craftsmanship.
Downstream from Manaus, on your return trip, you will discover the “Encounter of the Waters” which is both a strange and magnificent phenomenon. For several kilometres you will sail on a half-yellow, half-black river before the waters of the Negro river and the Solimoes river finally mingle and give birth to the Amazon.

I booked an all-inclusive trip to the Amazon rainforest, and I can't believe how much I got for $90 a day
- I spent about three days at an all-inclusive lodge in the Amazon rainforest for $270.
- I had to take a two-hour bus and a two-hour canoe ride to get to my overwater lodge .
- I spent my time spotting animals, hiking, swimming, and taking in the peaceful setting.
As a child, I dreamed of visiting the Amazon rainforest, but I always envisioned it being wildly inaccessible.
Traveling, especially internationally, is expensive. Looking at lodging alone, hotel prices shot up by 1.7% between April and May, according to NerdWallet's Travel Price Index .
So when I found a three-day, all-inclusive tour of the Amazon rainforest at Green Forest Ecolodge for just $270, I knew I had to go.
The package included all my meals, bus and canoe transfers, a private lodge, and up to four activities a day.
Here's what it was like.
It was a bit of a hike to get there
After landing in Ecuador, I hopped on an overnight shuttle from Quito to Lago Agrio. Still slightly sleepy, I splurged and spent a few dollars on a taxi from the bus station to Magic Hostal, the designated meeting spot.
From there, a driver met me for a complimentary transfer to the canoe launch. The drive took about two hours, winding through suburbs and navigating a mixture of tarmac and grit roads.
After jumping off the minibus, the real adventure started. I was ushered toward the river, where a guide placed my luggage in a thick plastic bag on a canoe to keep it dry.
He then helped me board the precariously wobbling vessel and gave me a green poncho (it's not called the rainforest for nothing).
With that, we were on our way to the lodge
A driver steered the vessel while a tour guide kept a sharp eye out for wildlife. They seemed to understand that time was of the essence in my short three-day stay.
The most exciting sighting was squirrel monkeys — sociable little primates that leaped along overwater branches. But by the time the two-hour canoe ride was over, I'd already seen multiple monkey species, birds, and a sloth.
It started raining as the canoe navigated the last few bends of the Cuyabeno River. I was dry under my fancy green poncho, but not wearing waterproof mascara was definitely a poor choice.
The overwater lodges were connected by a green boardwalk
I was ecstatic as we approached the wooden dock and I got my first glimpse of the lodge I'd be staying in.
I opted for a private overwater bungalow with a terrace and hammock. The double bed inside came equipped with a mosquito net, and the bathroom was semi-open and overlooked the jungle.

It was truly beautiful.
Meals were a sociable and elaborate occasion with the other guests
Lunch was served right away. Everyone staying here ate together three times a day in the main lodge, and a bell rang to announce each meal.
Meals consisted of three courses of traditional Ecuadorian cuisine.
There was a starter, main, and dessert at lunch and dinner , and breakfast was a mixture of fruit, toast, and a hot meal. Unlimited hot drinks and bottled water were also available 24/7.
I'm vegetarian, and I was a little worried about the food and drink situation, but I didn't have any issues during my stay. The staff were very conscious of food quality and water safety, so I wasn't worried about getting sick.
I experienced so many excursions as part of my all-inclusive package
On the first day alone, I saw caimans (alligatorid species) and took a guided night hike.
I spotted all kinds of nocturnal creatures like tarantulas.
The second day was busier, starting with a hike through the thick jungle.
While treading through the wet soil — that's almost orange from the high levels of clay — I saw a snake and owl monkeys before crossing some swamp terrain.
Along the way, our guide, Elvis, taught us about the rainforest. I learned poisonous snakes in the Amazon have a triangular head and that indigenous Cuyabeno communities believe copal resin wards off negativity.
I'd been nervous about swimming in the Amazon, but it was surprisingly warm
Later on the second day, I'd scheduled a sunset lagoon swim.
On the way, we saw pink dolphins and woolly monkeys and heard roaring howler monkeys.
I wasn't sure what to expect, and I was a little nervous about swimming (it wasn't exactly balmy). But after diving into the lagoon from the canoe, everything was peaceful.
It was a refreshing bit of solitude as Elvis played music from a speaker.
On the boat ride back, we spotted adult caimans that looked straight out of "Jurassic Park." Their unnerving yellow eyes were shuddering but impressive.
The third day was short and sweet but still amazing
My final morning started with a quick birdwatching excursion. I spotted toucans, macaws, and a nesting red heron.
But after breakfast, it was time to head back out on the canoe to transfer to Lago Agrio.
I couldn't believe the value I got for my money
Visiting the Amazon rainforest was the opposite of what I expected. It was budget-friendly and serene, not expensive and uncomfortable.
After my stay, I realized $270 for three days of food, lodging, and activities was a ridiculously good deal — especially since I got to see caimans, pink river dolphins, five species of monkeys, and hundreds of insects and birds.
I'd definitely recommend the experience, even for the squeamish or those who don't think they're outdoorsy.
