How to allow access only to specific websites on iPhone and iPad

You can stop unrestricted website access in Safari, Google Chrome, Firefox, and all third-party browsers on your iPhone or iPad and set them to only load websites you permit.

Here’s why you might want to do that and the steps to enable restrictions to allow just some specific websites you deem safe to be accessible on your or your child’s iPhone or iPad.

Why restrict iPhone or iPad to only some websites

You may want to restrict your kid’s access to only a handful of websites like their school, Wikipedia, Scholastic, and such. If they try to visit any other website, be it social media, YouTube, a site with inappropriate content, web pages with explicit languages, or something with obscene/adult content, they won’t be able to do that, thanks to the parental controls you set.

How website blocking works

Website blocking on iOS is realized through the system-wide Internet content filter, which analyzes data provided by Apple’s WebKit rendering framework. Therefore, website content filter affects all browsers, not just Safari, because third-party App Store browsers such as Opera, Google Chrome, Mozilla’s Firefox, and many others are required to use Apple’s WebKit engine.

How to allow only selected websites on iPhone and iPad

1) Open the Settings app and tap Screen Time .

Make sure Screen Time is on. If not, tap Turn On Screen Time and set it up. When you do that, choose whether this is your device or your child’s. Besides that, don’t forget to set a Screen Time passcode . Please don’t keep the Screen Time passcode the same as the device passcode, and don’t share it with your kid.

2) Tap Content & Privacy Restrictions .

3) Enable the toggle for Content & Privacy Restrictions . After that, tap Content Restrictions and enter the Screen Time passcode if asked.

4) Pick Web Content .

5) Tap Allowed Websites , and you’ll notice a heading titled Only Allow These Websites . It’ll have about ten websites listed here. Except for Apple’s own website, most of them are for kids. You can keep them or swipe left and delete them. Now, tap Add Website to add the sites you want to allow access to, like your child’s school website.

6) Enter the title , which is the website’s name, like San Diego Elementary school, Olivia’s Homework, PBS Kids, Disney, or something relevant. Next, enter the full URL  or site address.

Note: This restriction setting works on the site level and not the site’s page level. For example, if you allow https://www.idownloadblog.com/ then all other pages of this website, like https://www.idownloadblog.com/tag/wallpaper/ or https://www.idownloadblog.com/2022/12/12/how-to-set-song-as-alarm-tone-iphone/  are automatically allowed.

7) Tap done on your keyboard to finish adding this website to the allowed list.

You can repeat steps 5 to 7 to add more websites.

After this, no website will ever be allowed to load, except for the ones you permitted. When the child tries to visit one of the restricted sites, it’ll show an error saying, “ Safari cannot open the page. The error was: “The URL was blocked by a content filter. ”

Other times, it may also say, “ You cannot browse this page at “website address” because it is restricted. Allow Website ” From here, you can tap Allow Website and use the Screen Time passcode to grant access to this site. However, your child can’t do that as they don’t know the Screen Time passcode you set on their device.

Allow blocked websites

As mentioned earlier, attempting to visit any blacklisted website, including those stored in Safari’s Reading List or Shared Links, will present a blocking page and the Allow Website link.

Just tap Allow Website and enter your Screen Time passcode to safelist the blocked website quickly.

Third-party web browsers might display a generic error webpage.

Besides Safari, you can also allow websites or delete them on the iOS device by going to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Content Restrictions > Web Content .

Note: These website limit access settings don’t sync to other devices with the same Apple ID. So, if you have more than one device to block website access, you’ll have to follow the steps on each of them.

Where did my bookmarks go?

iPhone’s website content filter also removes blocked websites from Safari’s bookmarks and favorites section. But don’t you worry, this is only temporary. Once website restrictions are disabled, all your bookmarks will automatically re-appear in Safari.

Another thing happens when website access is restricted: a special Allowed Sites bookmarks folder appears in Safari with all your permitted websites. In addition, bookmarks for any blocked website are temporarily removed from Safari’s bookmarks.

Because the Internet content filter cannot manage saved bookmarks in third-party browsers, it only appears in Safari, not Chrome, Firefox, etc.

How to set Safari extension permissions on a per-website basis

Most web browser users install extensions -- password managers, ad blockers, writing aids, and more. For the most part, those browser extensions don't cause problems with the sites you visit. But now and then, they do. Take for example the news that YouTube was cracking down on ad blockers -- cracking down to the extent that it would block you from viewing content if it detected you were using an ad blocker.

Now, thanks to the latest version of Safari, you can add exceptions such that you can enable or disable extensions on a per-website basis. So, instead of having to set exceptions for a site (which aren't 100% guaranteed to work), you can simply disable the extension for the site in question.

This handy feature is quite easy to use and does guarantee the results will be effective.

How to set Safari extension permissions 

What you'll need: The only things you'll need are Safari version 17 or newer and your favorite extensions installed. I'll be demonstrating on MacOS Sonoma.

One thing to keep in mind is that this feature doesn't work for every extension, so your mileage may vary.

1. Open Safari Settings

The first thing to do is open the Safari browser and ensure you have the site in question open (such as YouTube). Next, click the Safari menu in the MacOS Menu Bar. From that drop-down menu, click Settings.

2. Open the Websites edit window

In the Settings pop-up, click the Websites tab. In this section, you should see a list of all the extensions you've installed that can be managed.

All of your currently opened sites will be visible here.

3. Enable/disable sites

In the left pane, you'll find the listing of your extensions. Select the extension you want to manage and, in the right pane, you'll see a list of all currently opened tabs, each with a permissions drop-down with three options: Ask, Allow, Deny. Remember when I said earlier that you must have the site in question open in the browser before you attempt to add an exception? The reason for this is that you can't manually add a site as an exception. So, from the list of sites, find the one that's having trouble rendering with the exception enabled, click the associated drop-down, and click either Deny or Ask. If you're certain the site will not function with the extension, select Deny.

Once you've taken care of all the sites that are having trouble with the extension, you can close the Settings popup and you're good to go. There's no need to restart Safari, as the changes will take place in real time.

Install extensions

Turn on extensions, turn off extensions, uninstall extensions, share extensions across devices.

Use the App Store to conveniently download and install Safari extensions. All extensions in the App Store are reviewed, signed, and hosted by Apple for your security, and they're automatically kept up to date.

Start by installing the latest macOS updates to make sure that Safari is up to date. You need Safari 12 or later to get Safari extensions from the App Store.

Open Safari and choose Safari > Safari Extensions from the menu bar.

The App Store opens to the Safari Extensions page. To download and install an extension, click Get or click the price. You might be asked to sign in with your Apple ID.

Starting with macOS Ventura, iOS 16, and iPadOS 16, you can share extensions across your Mac, iPhone, and iPad:

On your Mac, open Safari and choose Safari > Settings, then click Extensions. Select “Share across devices” at the bottom of the window.

On your iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > Safari > Extensions, then turn on Share Across Devices.

To uninstall an extension from all devices, you must uninstall it on each device.

How to set Pop Up Exception in Safari

If you are not able to access items on the IWU sites, it may be due to your pop-up blocker settings. Follow the instructions below to correct the issue.

You can either block all Pop-ups or none, there is no exception list.

In the Safari menu, go to  Preferences

In the preferences menu select the Security tab

If checked, uncheck Block pop-up windows

How to add Java Exception Site List for all users

I need to use an old Java applet for a certain website, but newer Java versions cannot run it, as it has a self-signed certificate. Reading on Oracle's Deployment Guide, I need to make my own deployment .JAR, with a proper certificate signing (not self signed), just to create the exception I need to run applets from a single domain.

I have found that there is a %userprofile%\appdata\LocalLow\Sun\Java\Deployment\security\exception.sites file, obviously one for each user. In there, one per line, is a list of domains I can set to exclude from NOT being executed. When I add the domain name, the user gets a single prompt, then it just allows that domain for that user. Great.

I know I could add this file to the Default user profile, for any new users being created. Unfortunately, I do not think that removing every user's profile from each of the systems is the right way to go. I can push commands to computers, but the commands run as my user - I can't use %USERPROFILE% for this. I do not want to put it in my login script, as I do not want the file getting large for users who constantly log in and off of systems. I also only want the single domain added to whatever is there, without wiping out the user's preferences that may already exist.

Because I do not want to wipe out their preferences, I thought of doing something along the lines of echo http://www.example.com >> %userprofile%\appdata\LocalLow\Sun\Java\Deployment\security\exception.sites , but that won't work, as it will keep adding to the file.

What can I do to add the list to the Exceptions rule, but only if the rule does not exist already?

• I'm not sure about how Java deals with it right now but if you look at the Documentation for the Deployment configuration file that there is a trusted cert store. It could be worth it to try to add the cert to that and it would be on a system level. –  Seth Feb 9, 2017 at 14:40

Just add the following files to C:\Windows\Sun\Java\Deployment folder.

deployment.properties:

deployment.config:

exception.sites:

This would affect all users of this machine.

The exceptions are store here, C:\Users{username}\AppData\LocalLow\Sun\Java\Deployment\security\exception.sites Populate your file with what you want to add, copy it to a file share and use a logon script to copy the file for each user. This will make it to where users will not be able to add new sites.

safari pop-up EXCEPTION list

I bet I am not the only on who wants an "exception list" to allow pop-ups. The current solution is "all or nothing". I am aware this is for security reasons but some radio stations for instance when accessed via tunein (which is my preference) require to open in pop-ups.

Most other browsers have an "allow pop-up exceptio list" ...the current Safari (Maviericks on Feb 12, 2014) does not seem to have it, does it?

or is there a Mac App that does this?

Safari - Preferences - Security - Web content: enable JavaScript - Block Pop-up Windows (I have both unchecked, yet I have to uncheck 'bloc pop-up windows' every time I want to listen to specific radio stations via tunein*)

This is making me use Chrome or Firefox which allows exceptions ...seems like a simple/common feature to implement for Safari to keep as preferred browser.

Thanks in advance for detailed replies, since I'm relatively new to Apple.

* I prefer using TuneIn for radio access (than itunes or the old radio app on Apple TV) since I can classify radio stations in folders and log in to my TuneIn account in TuneIn apps for iOS, Vizio, Roku, etc. Soap box: the old radio app in itunes (not i-tunes radio) needs major revamping to allow mgmt, reason why may people prefer TuneIn and the reason for this question on allowing pop-up exceptions.

Thanks Allan. I sent the Safari enhancement request, hopefully gate-keepers and decision-makers will read it. It seems easy to implement and very common in other browsers (maybe Safari had it at one point?)

Anyone else who knows alternaitves feel free to chime in.
