What reviewers want you to know

Positive highlights.

  • I always shop around and these people won my business... Best price and customer service was very good.
  • Easy booking process , flights left on time, didn't encounter any problems, had receives a follow up call

Critical highlights

  • Charges to my credit card are fraudulent and were not accepted e.g.
  • Site is confusing when choosing seat selections for departure and return.

“Hey, so very good and helpful service you guys got...”

Hey, so very good and helpful service you guys got here, but, please, fix your filters as this particular one filter "close/near dates of departure" that is constantly on and active when you make new search is pretty annoying))... Thanks and Best Regards! You Are Doing a Great Job Keep Doing It And Right On!

“You lie and steal, why can I not make any changes or...”

You lie and steal, why can I not make any changes or cancellations? Your bot system goes on an endless loop to avoid addressing the issue and your "travel experts" can't even manage to do even one thing aside delay further. This whole experience has left me feeling like this company is a total scam. I'm having my bank cancel your charge and issue a fraud claim.

Kevin, your insights hit close to home! As an amateur cook, my stew never comes out right. What’s your secret for achieving the perfect texture? Your idea of slow cooking with minimal stirring is an untapped gem! What do you think about adding a bit of cornstarch for thickening? Last Christmas, I had to serve runny stew and it wasn’t a pretty sight! Sharing your experiences have emboldened me to try it again.💪😄 Will keep you posted on the outcome! Cheers!

OneTravel review

Top Ten Reviews Verdict

An average travel site, OneTravel doesn't bring more discounts than the bigger players in this area. We do like the hotel theme filter, though.

Good hotel search options

No cancellation fees

Prices are rarely the cheapest

Why you can trust Top Ten Reviews Our expert reviewers spend hours testing and comparing products and services so you can choose the best for you. Find out more about how we test .

OneTravel lets you book flights, hotels, rental cars, cruises and vacation packages. You can also search for flights under different price caps based on your budget. This price cap search is a great feature for international flights, which typically cost over $1,000.

OneTravel has average prices compared to the best online travel sites , but it adds a per-person processing fee, which may tip the total price into a range that is more than what some travelers can afford. If your plans fall through, you may find a hefty cancellation fee on your bill, which is even higher for canceled international flights. However, OneTravel will waive these fees and others (when permitted by airlines or other suppliers) for active military members, senior citizens, disabled and bereaved travelers. If you're booking a vacation package for your family, we recommend you book with Expedia because it makes booking packages easier than other sites.

One of the features of OneTravel's hotel search is its theme filter. With it, you can search for hotels under a wide variety of themes, such as family, pet-friendly and romantic, golf or and spa vacations. Pictures and descriptions can be deceiving; OneTravel posts TripAdvisor user reviews so you can read a range of guest experiences and opinions.

If you plan to travel internationally but you're not sure what you'll need, the visa and passport assistance feature is a great tool. This handy feature lets you select your country and state of departure, plus your destination and reason for traveling, like business, pleasure, transit or journalism. Results tell you whether a visa or passport is required to enter your destination country and how to obtain these documents before you leave.

OneTravel has several ways you can reach its customer support department. The FAQs section is massive, so if you have a simple query, it's likely you'll find it there. This section covers flights, cars, hotels, billing and payment, and general questions, to name a few. You can't email questions to OneTravel, but it's one of the few online travel services with a live chat feature.

OneTravel offers some of the lowest base prices, but you want to be absolutely sure of your travel plans before booking to avoid the hefty cancellation and itinerary change fees. These types of fees are standard for any online travel site that collaborates with airlines and other travel service providers, but the costs add up quickly. This online travel agency offers plenty of promos and coupons to knock down the service fees and lower the prices even more. If you're looking to redeem travel points for your vacation, we recommend you book using CheapTickets because you can redeem hotel and airline points and also get points through CheapTickets' own point system.

Booking not put through evrn though payment was made

I booked an air ticket under One- Travel, fill up everything and confirm the order by makjng the credit card payment, but the transaction was not effected. Tried to chat online to their so-called experts for almost 2 hours, they didn't really help but just to send me information which I can get it in thier website. I am still worrying if I would get charged by it as I had authorised the card payment. Don't trust this company, it's really a waste of time!

Middle-man Company that Overcharges on Hotel Bookings.

When I rebooked an existing hotel booking to include an extra person in a room, they tacked on a $120 "platform fee." Afterward, I received a notification that I had a booking on booking.com, which, to my surprise, cost $120 less than what they charged me. They also made my booking non-refundable, I would have had to pay $150 to walk out of the deal, which forced me to stick with it. It seems like they're taking hotel bookings, making the bookings themselves on bookings.com, and then charging customers a $120 premium. This company is a middle-man that overcharges bookings. Avoid them at all costs and use Priceline or Booking.com instead to book hotels yourself without unexpected fees.

Thank you for your feedback. We regret that it was not a satisfactory experience.

Easy to do.

Moderatly easy for this 85 year old lady to navigate to see an old friend in a rest home in Omaha. I booked my own flight. I am staying with her in her old folks home. I hope we have a nice time.

This company is a straight up scam

This company is a straight up scam. Made a flight purchase and needed to change dates which was allowed per their policy, but there’s no way to do this without going through their bot system so when you finally get to an alleged person they delay delay delay until “nothing can be done”. I requested the change within 10 minutes of booking and 2 days later after spending hours and hours with these so-called travel experts and all they say is we’re checking hold on or come back later. They promise to send emails or call and never do. They are liars as a business model, plain a simple. I had to just have my credit card company deny the charge and file for fraud to end the cycle incompetence and get my money back.

Pros and Cons

Pros: it was faster and easier to book than the Spirit airline app or chat feature. Cons: it didn’t take me more than a few minutes to input my info and press the pay now button but all of a sudden out of nowhere, as I was literally trying to pay and get my tix settled the fare increased by $50. Of course they shared it wasn’t their fault. Bahaha… it’s bait and switch. The bait was it was listed as the cheapest place to purchase them. Until you are told fare increase. I don’t like being played and clearly they think we are dumb. RESPONSE TO ONETRAVEL’S COMMENT Thank you for responding to me. Allow me to respond to your comment. When I went on the site to pay for our seats, there were at least 50 seats available from $250 all the way down to $20. Again, if you want good reviews and happy customers you need to PRACTICE HONESTY. I’m deducting a star and going from 3 to 2 stars for not being honest and transparent. It seems pretty apparent you knew that the “fare change” trick didn’t happen because millions of people world wide were buying up all the seats at the same time. Trust me, I don’t like doing this, I’d prefer to give happy 5 star reviews. I don’t enjoy giving bad reviews. Please don’t lie to your customers. Thank you!

Date of experience : March 07, 2024

Thank you for your feedback. With people all over the world able to go onto their computer or phone and search for the the same limited seats on any given flight it can be easy to see how fares and even flights ca sell out quickly. We do understand that this can be upsetting when it occurs and we regret any inconvenience

One Travel is a disaster to work with. RUN, don't walk, to find another company!.

It was a disaster working with One Travel. 7 calls in 2 days... 4 disconnects... on hold for excessively long periods of time... every customer service rep had a different story. 2nd call today with a supervisor started at 4:43 and didn't end until 6:10 with most of that time being on hold. In the end I had to cancel my 2 departure flights. NEVER, EVER AGAIN with One Travel. The worst company I've ever dealt with & I'm 70 years old!!!

Ryan air let me down. They caused me big problem without communicating cancel my flight due to my debit card problem. They blocked my card permanently. Therefore I have to change to another airline which cost me more and longer journey. The airline has to speak to the customer directly and correct the errors. It was a good experience as far as being quick, thorough, and no hassles on their part. I don't like putting all of my card info out for all eyes to see. Is it encrypted?? If they can block out personal information on other sites, why not here? I did like having the CVV number on the pop-up box, rather than with all my other info.

VERY BAD SERVICE. At first I paid $50 for 1 checked bag during the travel, YOUR WEB PAGE TOLD ME SO. But when I had already paid the flight, then you tell me that I have to pay $125 for each checked bag, both in the two ways of the roundtrip. How many times do I have to pay for the bags???

Nasty trick to get you to pay to pass on a seat preference

This was the most trusted of the four sites found by Wego that could book on a little Mongolian airline whose own website and app don't work. While I was booking they put up a screen asking for seat preferences When I went to book I noticed a charge and when I clicked on the little information ball it showed that it was a charge by them to pass on my preference to the airline I went back and erased my seat selection and the charge went away . After I approved the charge on the website they put up another seat selection screen with only one of my two legs on it. I chose a seat and when i looked at my booking conformation/receipt I'd been charged the additional fee!. I called them and he could hear me voicing in this review and hung up. I called back and got a better guy. The first customer service agent didn't know if he could reverse the charge and told me some stuff about it being necessary but the 2nd one did it right away. I learned from the guy I talked they are owned by same company as Cheapoair. Same customer service desk. I have used and liked cheapoair in the past. But be careful of this nasty trick.

Pros: OneTravel Review

The best thing about OneTravel.com is their low fare promise.

In the event that you are able to find a lower rate on a U.S based travel website within 4 hours of booking through OneTravel.com, you will be credited the full amount or refunded the difference.

If you contact OneTravel.com after 4 hours but no later than 24 hours, they will give you a $50 coupon which you can use on a future booking.

The low fare promise shows how confident OneTravel.com is in their ability to provide customers with the lowest fares.

It is unusual that they would be unable to provide the lowest fares available, but they provide customers with a fantastic guarantee in cases where they are able to find better prices elsewhere.

  • Low Price Guarantee
  • Safe & Secure Booking
  • Secure Checkout
  • 24 Hour Free Cancelation
  • Flight Insurance Available
  • Monthly Promotions

Cons: OneTravel Review

The only negative aspect of OneTravel.com is that they have negotiated different deals and agreements with different airlines, which means that there are varying rules and restrictions for exchanges and cancellations.

With certain airlines, exchanges and cancellations are not allowed. When it comes to airlines who allow exchanges or cancellations, OneTravel.com is required to collect a fee for the exchange and they must also charge for any difference in the fare when necessary.

Exchange fees start from $125 and can go as high as $350.

I made reservation on their web site for Jan 3rd. after completing the transactions the reservations were for Jan 5th. not only that i paid extra for cancellation insurance. I called immediately to cancel the reservations. the customer service had such a heavy accent he was impossible to understand. he refused to cancel the flight, said i could only cancel if it was a medical emergency. no where did it say that when i added the insurance. I should have walked away there but made the mistake of paying double for the correct day. It took them over a week to send me the updated itinerary. they only gave me 35 minutes to depart on plane in terminal D to get to terminal B in the Atlanta airport. I called and emailed twice a day for over two weeks. they did nothing.

there is no free cancellation within 10 minutes of booking, I was contacted from the company to arrange seating which was also $100+ to do so then they told me it was $50 per person to cancel our 4 person flight. the guy who called kept getting loud with me and was very rude after he contacted me to try and sell me more on my flight… I was way over the amount I would have paid on jet blue at full price just to save $100 it was not worth it at all. do not try and save $$$ you get what you pay for and then loose more in the end

Our experience with OneTravel was horrendous, and we will NEVER use them again. The transaction was a time-consuming, humiliating fiasco. We now know we were manipulated. We now know we were lied to. We now know we were scammed. We have waited until our travel was completed to leave the following scathing review because we did not want our long-awaited trip — which involved being with close family we’d not seen in a long time — to be further sabotaged by OneTravel. We are not “ventilating” but are taking the time to report the facts of our experience in order to inform other travellers to avoid this company. Buyer beware!

My wife and I purchased our tickets from OneTravel more than six months in advance for our recent trip in Europe. Having some important, unanswered questions about the airlines’ widely-varying luggage allowances, we called OneTravel’s 1-800 number so an agent could answer our specific luggage questions. Big mistake! That’s when our booking nightmare began. As far as OneTravel’s guarantee to match the best available price, the agent — who spoke very poor English and at times appeared to be reading from a well-rehearsed, prepared script — quoted OneTravel’s best price at MORE THAN THREE TIMES what we told him we’d just found online. When I was about to hang up in disgust, the agent’s haggling and pricing changes began in earnest. His original “OneTravel best price” was eventually lowered FOUR times during the call, with the final price being approximately $40(US) per ticket above the online price we had found. The agent insisted that the ticket price had actually changed during our conversation and that these were the last two tickets for the flight we needed more than six months away. An hour and a half into the call, I finally capitulated and bought the tickets only to soon discover that the airline’s inclusive website price had, in fact, not changed at all. (And six months later — with many, many empty seats on the actual flight itself — we could see these were most definitely NOT the last two seats on the plane.) My wife and I actually felt at the time we were being scammed but were finally willing to pay the $40 per ticket difference to have the closure of a confirmed booking. Then we received the follow-up email from OneTravel with our “Billing Details”, and the $40-per-ticket price difference we’d finally agreed to was only the beginning of the extra charges the agent had added on. Something called “Traveler Assist Classic” — a totally useless add-on which we neither authorized nor wanted — was included. We were outraged to also learn that more than $120 in “Agency Fees” were also added on to the final price. We paid OneTravel more than $225(US) for our tickets — a whopping 60% extra — than we would have paid booking directly with the airline. But that egregious, dishonest gouging was only the beginning of the fiasco. When we got our tickets emailed to us, we quickly discovered that the passport information had been incorrectly entered by the agent, a mistake which would invalidate the ticket. After finally reaching the agent again to report the error, he had the audacity to blame me for his error because I had continued to question him about the price and that had distracted him. Later we also learned that in the “Traveler Information” section of our E-Ticket that he had listed my wife as “male” and me as “female”. At that point, we did not want to contact OneTravel ever again and decided to contact the airline directly to correct that egregious mistake. We finally also learned that only one of our two flights had the luggage allowance we requested and required, and we had to eventually purchase the additional baggage adding to our final price. Getting the correct booking for our luggage needs was the reason we called OneTravel in the first place.

There was absolutely nothing about this transaction that was acceptable to us. It was one lie after another and one mistake after another that came with a very, very high price tag. We allowed ourselves to be scammed by this dishonest and unsavory company. But never again! We repeat: BUYER BEWARE!!

AWFUL experience with onetravel.com Found a flight for $50.10 and went through everything to book 3 tickets and after submitting I get a message stating “the price of your flight has changed from $150.30 to $594.30″. In just a matter of minutes to type all traveler info in. I called and the customer service rep told me that the airlines change the price every two minutes. When I went back to that site while on the phone it showed $50.10 and he told me my computer was wrong. He said ” go ahead book it and I’ll prove you wrong.” I said that was not very nice and that I would find another site to use and he said “so go ahead and do it” and hung up on me.

OneTravel is HORRIBLE! I booked a one way flight and they sent me a round trip itinerary. I called them to fix the mistake. Instead I wasted my lunch break on hold for 30 minutes and only 5 with “Amber.” She spoke in a heavy Hindi accent. I explained the problem to her. But as soon as I told her wanted the round trip fixed back to that one-way she began interrupting me by repeating this phrase: “No! No! We cun’t mam. No airline in the wold would charge haf a round trip.” In between the interruptions, I explained that I wasn’t trying to pay for half the round trip cost. I had a screenshot of the booking, and all I wanted to do was cancel the round trip and get the one way that I had thought I purchased. She became really defensive and told me that it was a nonrefundable booking. You’ve got to be kidding me! You make a mistake and I’m left to foot the bill. Before I could even react, she says “Thank you fuh yuhr time mam. Is the anything else I can help with.” Feeling jipped, I switched to Hindi thinking she didn’t understand me and told her she can’t help me with anything else because “else” implies that the we settled the first problem. She responded by essentially translating everything she said in English to Hindi and added the equivalent of “It was nice to meet you. I felt good meeting you. I bid you goodbye.” She hung up.

I tried calling 2 more times and was put on hold then dropped before speaking to “Katy”. She agreed to the refund, but was just as defensive. It’s been 12 days and I’ve seen no refund in my account. My flight is next week. I guess 4th times the charm?! I’m calling to cancel, and if they don’t I’m roping my credit card company deal into this as a scam. Don’t waste 2 lunch breaks, $400 and regret on having these types of people be the reason why my kind is stereotyped as having horrible customer service skills. Just use Travelocity.

I purchased a ticket using this site. My return flight from Tehran to Toronto is with Turkish Airline through Istanbul. In Istanbul, I arrive at SAW airport and should depart from IST airport. As a typical “Flight Connection”, my assumption was that I deliver the luggage at origin airport and will collect them at destination, and the airline will take care of the luggage transfer. But I just learned that I should collect my luggage from SAW and transfer it to IST by myself. I called their customer service right after I learned the fact complaining that why they didn’t mention this important piece of information while booking process! Their response in a very unprofessional and irresponsible manner was that “they do not provide every single detail about flights on their website”. This was an important piece of information that could impact my purchase. I would have NEVER purchased this ticket, if I had known this ridiculous “Flight Connection” process. They have in fact changed the meaning of “Flight Connection”! I understand that this might be due to Turkish Airline’s policies, but as a third party website for booking process, they have to provide the customers with ALL important details that are required for booking decision! I NEVER NEVER NEVER use OneTravel in future and recommend everyone be very cautious if they use it. Do not trust them AT ALL!

Worst ever,

Very bad experience so bad I had to cancel credit card and deny payment for flights to Dallas, Vegas and also S Cali.don’t believe I will ever use this site ever again . Best of luck getting money back from where ever they are located

I need to change flight date from June 16/2020 returning 7/6/2020 confermation # 67993436 need to change to 9/8/2020 to retune on 9/28/2020. call me @ cell 208 473-9623 home 949 218-1989. My name is Doug. No price change.

We booked airline tickets through OneTravel for my family of 5 (3 little kids) and had all the seats confirmed available and booked. We got an email later saying that the seats were no longer available and to call back and get new seats. Well the new seats they proposed had all my family separated in different parts of the plane. Do you really expect that my 3 year old, 6 year old and 8 year old will sit by themselves on an airplane? No way.

They did find other seats for us but it would cost us an additional $100 each. That sounds a bit shady to me. Baiting us in with a lower price and then cancelling our seats due to “unavailability” and then up-charging $100 per seat. So logically the next step would ask for a cancellation and that is where things got interesting.

We told them we wanted to cancel it because they knowingly sold us seats that were not available and they told us in order to cancel they would charge us an additional $50 for cancelling EACH ticket. We told them they were in the wrong due to the fact knowingly sold us seats that were not available. We disputed the charges on our credit card and they are sending us to collections. Talk about a fraud company. STEER CLEAR FROM THESE FRAUDSTERS!!

I wish I would have read the reviews before I bought this ticktet. I paid extra for a flexible ticket so I wouldn’t have to pay cancellation fees for this flight but come to find out that even if I was cancelling more than 24 hours later, I would get a lot of fees added on-100 for each person and then another 184 for seat cancellations NEVER AGAIN..STAY AWAY FROM THIS WEBSITE. THEY WILL SCAM YOU !!!!!!!!!!!!

Like every review I have read, my experience was unsavory. I was booking travel to assist my sister following an amputation surgery. When I hung up the phone, I was pleased. My first impression was that my agent was helpful, the rate I received seemed fare for the requests I made… Until I looked at my email and bank account the following morning. It was then that I realized that I was charged twice and I had two separate reservation numbers. Thinking it was nothing more than an honest mistake, I called One Travel on my drive to work and spoke with Mickey who also seemed to resolve my issue and concern, cancelling the duplicate reservation and processing for a refund. I was pleased enough with this interaction that I inquired about the availability of an earlier flight on the date of my departure. Mickey located one and offered it for an additional $45 which I initially declined saying it was not worth $45 to me to leave a few hours earlier. He lowered the offer to $25 and I figured, why not and accepted. I received my duplicated reservation cancellation confirmation via email and my updated reservation confirmation and figured that I was good to go. I had received these items while driving and had not looked closely at them until later. The following morning, looking more closely at the documents I’d received, I realized that my name was spelled incorrectly on the reservation although it was spelled correctly EVERYWHERE else. Being at work, I sent this information through the on-line customer service contact form. I received an email response telling me that to resolve the issue, the ticket would have to be cancelled and reissued at an $81 charge to me and that I had to confirm it within 2 hours of receipt of the email. I replied demanding to speak to a rep and decided to call them on my own. I spoke with Arika who put me on hold upon hearing my concerns. When she returned, she was defensive and had begun pointing fingers, placing blame on me that it was somehow my fault to have the issue. I immediately told her she was too jumpy and I did not appreciate it. She put me on hold again and we were disconnected. She did call me back, however, and told me that she spoke to 2 different people at American and that there would be no problem with my name being misspelled on my ticket, and that I may just be subject to additional screening through TSA. As you can see from the screenshots of the attached e-mails, that seems to contradict the actual facts.

This morning, I checked my bank account again. (I do this out of normal habit at least once per day) I noticed a THIRD charge. Attempts to reach One Travel have not been successful so I have initiated charge disputes with my bank while I continue to waste my time chasing these idiots and filing out paperwork to get my own money back. This is the first and last time that I ever look outside of Travelocity or the airline directly for airfare and travel arrangements.

You cannot verify seat or ticket confirmation as they do not provide links. Have to contact airlines ON THE PHONE which takes a lot of time as they don’t recognize the confirmation code. For the amount I saved, it was not worth it. And when I contacted their customer support they try to upsell you on seat reservations and other extras that are a scam. I would NEVER use them again.

How to Find Out if a Destination Is Safe for Travel

If you’re planning a trip and want to know if the destination is safe to visit, there are so many resources at your disposal to help you decide. As someone who has traveled full time as a digital nomad for three years, I’ve come to rely on a few useful sources for gathering destination safety and trip advice. Here are some simple steps you can take to check safety information for your upcoming trip.

1. Check U.S. government websites for COVID guidelines and other info

Familiarizing yourself with the latest COVID-19 guidelines posted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is a good first move. Also check the COVID-19 FAQ page on the U.S. Embassy websites for the country you’re traveling to so that you’re up to date with the country’s entry requirements. Unfortunately, entry requirements can change , so don’t get caught off guard if a new quarantine or test rule pops up .

In addition, the U.S. Department of State travel advisories page lets you search the country you’re traveling to so that you can see the latest travel alerts. The advisories can be particularly useful if you’re going to a destination that is known to be risky, as it can tell you which regions should be avoided and why.

2. Join Facebook groups for travelers and digital nomads

Facebook groups are another great resource for finding information on the destination you plan on visiting. Region-specific information, including safety, can be found in expat or digital nomad groups related to the city or country you’re headed to. If your destination is obscure, look for general digital nomad groups or groups specifically dedicated to solo travel.

These groups often have thousands of members, and you can use the search feature in the group by typing in your destination to see if anyone has asked for the same information. Some of the groups are private and some are public, so you may need to join before you can search or make your own post. In addition, if you’re traveling solo and want to meet others who are living in or traveling to your intended destination, posting in these groups is a great way to connect with other travelers, especially if you’re nervous about traveling.

For example, if you’re thinking about going to Medellin, Colombia, and want to know safety information and travel tips, join the Digital Nomads Medellin Facebook group to ask your questions.

3. Leverage your existing online and offline communities

Taking stock of your existing community is another great way to find information about your destination. You can make a post on Facebook or Twitter and ask for advice. Maybe one of your followers has recently returned from a vacation in that country or maybe another friend did study abroad or moved there temporarily for work. If Instagram is more of your thing, post an Instagram story that you’re planning a trip to a specific area and are looking for safety and general advice.

Another great way to leverage your community is to use the search feature on Facebook. Using the above example of a trip to Medellin, in the Facebook search field, type “my friends who live in Medellin” and you will see a list of Facebook friends who live there. You may end up reconnecting with old friends or getting lots of helpful advice from a community you didn’t even know you had. Even if you think you may not know anyone who has traveled to wherever you’re headed, it is worth the small effort to check because that connection could be a wealth of knowledge.

Of course, there is also the old-fashioned way of asking your friends, family, classmates or coworkers if they’ve ever traveled to where you’re heading. It is easy to forget how many people we actually know and could ask for travel advice.

4. Read relevant blog articles

Reading blog articles for your intended destination could also provide a lot of useful travel advice and safety information. Again, using the Medellin trip as an example, head over to your favorite search engine and type, “Is Medellin safe?” and you will see pages of results discussing the safety information. In addition, you’ll find helpful tips (e.g., which areas are safe, how to get around, the best things to do, areas to stay in).

Not every article is going to give you the information you need, so take time to read through a few of them so you get an overall picture of the safety situation of where you’re headed. The more quality sources you have, the more accurate picture you’ll be able to get of the situation.

Bonus tip: Consider travel insurance

Once you decide to book your trip, consider whether you need travel insurance. Some benefits, like Cancel For Any Reason, or CFAR , need to be purchased on or near the date when you make your trip payment, so you want to start thinking about travel insurance sooner than later. Whether you’re going to use the travel insurance provided by your credit card or will purchase a standalone policy, you have many options to choose from. Traveling carries a certain element of uncertainty, and protecting yourself with trip insurance is a great safety net to protect against a wide range of issues, including lost or stolen luggage, rental car problems and medical emergencies.

Best ways to find safety information for your destination

From leveraging your existing Instagram or Twitter community to joining Facebook groups and reading articles specifically related to trip advice, you can find so much information on travel safety.

When you’re in trip-planning mode, consider your travel insurance options, check the CDC guidelines, U.S. Department of State travel advisories and read the latest COVID notices posted on the website of the country you’re going to (or its U.S. Embassy site) so that you’re up to date on the latest information. And be sure to tap into the power of social media and your own circle of friends to get even more information.

Everything you need to know about the Capital One travel portal

Kyle Olsen

Editor's Note

Capital One's new travel portal, launched in 2021, has significantly improved since its beta release. It now allows Capital One credit cardholders , including those with the issuer's cash-back cards , to directly use their rewards for travel purchases. The portal also features updated flight search capabilities and the issuer's hotel programs: the Premier Collection and the Lifestyle Collection .

In this guide, we will explain what you need to know about the Capital One portal.

What is the Capital One travel portal?

is one travel website safe

Credit card issuers often provide bonus rewards when using their travel portals, but they can be frustrating due to poor customer service and user interfaces. However, Capital One differentiates itself by integrating technology from Hopper, a trusted app for predicting the lowest prices for flights and hotels. With access to vast amounts of data, Capital One claims a 95% accuracy rate in price predictions.

The portal also offers customer-friendly features like price drop protection, best price guarantee and price match with competitors. Suppose the portal advises you to book a flight. In that case, you will receive automatic price drop protection, ensuring a partial refund as a travel credit if the ticket price decreases within a specified time frame (generally up to $50 after booking).

Capital One has also addressed customer concerns by adding more support staff to reduce phone hold times. Three paid add-on features are available for users: cancel-for-any-reason (CFAR) coverage, price freeze protection and rapid rebooking .

CFAR coverage allows you to cancel your flight up to three hours before travel and receive back 70-90% of the ticket price. On the other hand, price freeze protection lets you pay a fee to lock in a price, protecting against sudden price increases. Rapid rebooking lets you select a same-day or next-day flight for up to $5,000 on any airline if your flight is delayed more than two hours or you risk not making your connection.

Here's a list of some top Capital One cards that offer access to Capital One Travel:

  • Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card
  • Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card
  • Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card
  • Capital One SavorOne Cash Rewards Credit Card
  • Capital One Quicksilver Cash Rewards Credit Card
  • Capital One Spark Cash Plus
  • Capital One Spark Miles for Business

You can access the portal through this link .

How to book flights through the Capital One travel portal

To book airfare using the Capital One travel portal, log into your account and hover over the "Flights" tab to search for one-way or round-trip flights. Enter your desired departure and arrival cities.

When selecting departure and return dates, it's not just a matter of merely selecting the convenient dates for you. Capital One brings in Hopper's familiar, color-coded interface, allowing you to see which dates offer the lowest prices in economy class.

is one travel website safe

You'll see Capital One's booking recommendation and flight options on the next screen.

is one travel website safe

From the results page, you can narrow the parameters by:

  • Fare class (cabin)

Then, you can sort your results by:

  • Recommended
  • Price (low to high)
  • Departure time (earliest to latest)
  • Arrival time (earliest to latest)
  • Stops (least to most)
  • Duration (shortest to longest)

There are a few other interesting features worth mentioning. Above all the options, you can see the price prediction tool come into effect with clear messaging on whether or not it's a good time to book.

is one travel website safe

If the site's algorithms advise you to book, that will trigger free price drop protection. You'll get back up to $50 of the difference as a future travel credit if you book now and the price drops in the specified time period (10 days in the above example).

If you're not ready, you can press "Watch This Trip" to receive emails about the best time to book whenever better prices become available. Unfortunately, this feature applies to the route and date, not the specific flight(s) you want to watch — though you can exclude basic economy and connecting flights.

Pay attention to the fare class when booking flights. Basic economy differs between airlines. For example, United Airlines does not allow full-size carry-on bags, but Delta Air Lines does. Additionally, cancellation policies vary across fare classes.

Capital One has tried to standardize fare classes across all airlines on its platform, making it easier for users. When searching through Capital One Travel, you'll see the following labels:

  • Basic : The best-priced options are often basic fares with restrictive policies and few amenities.
  • Standard : Typically, main and economy fares include amenities like carry-on bags and seat selection.
  • Enhanced : These fares include more legroom, priority boarding, and free beverages and snacks.
  • Premium : These fares include cradled or reclined seats, priority boarding, and premium snacks and beverages.
  • Luxury : These fares feature reclined seats with personalized services and premium meals. Priority boarding is also included.

After selecting your desired flight, Capital One Travel provides an extensive overview of what to expect during your journey. This includes detailed information on seat measurements, aircraft layout and onboard amenities like power outlets, fresh food options and whether lounge access is included. These comprehensive details surpass what you typically find on other travel portals or even when booking directly with airlines.

is one travel website safe

The payment side is quick and easy too. Enter the traveler information, with fields for frequent flyer numbers and Known Traveler Numbers (for instance, your TSA PreCheck number).

As a holder of the Capital One Venture card , I can apply my miles at a rate of 1 cent each toward the purchase. However, if you want to save your miles for later, press "Do not apply my rewards." You can use your credit card to pay for your reservation instead.

Note that the Capital One Venture X card offers 5 miles per dollar spent on flights booked through Capital One Travel.

Other options available in the booking process include purchasing the abovementioned add-ons: CFAR and price freeze. The price for these features will vary, depending on factors like your trip cost, how far in advance you're booking, whether the price is rated as "low" or "high," and other elements.

How to book hotels through the Capital One travel portal

is one travel website safe

There are fewer distinctive features when booking your hotels through the Capital One travel portal, but the process is similar to the above.

To find a hotel, hover over the "Hotels" tab on the landing page and enter your destination, dates and number of travelers. Unlike flight bookings, there is no color-coded calendar for prices.

You'll then see a list and map format with various options. Filter your search by rating and price per night. Sort the listings by recommended, price (low to high) or star rating (high to low).

If your city has Premier Collection hotels, those options will appear toward the top. These hotels include benefits like an on-property "experience credit" of up to $100, daily breakfast for two people and complimentary Wi-Fi. Access is limited to those with premium credit cards from Capital One: Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card and Capital One Venture X Business (a business credit card formerly known as the Spark Travel Elite card).

is one travel website safe

If you click "All filters," you can sort by the amenities that matter to you or even look up specific properties.

is one travel website safe

While the search features are more limited than booking flights, you'll get a detailed description of each hotel and can find out about amenities, rates, location and cancellation policy.

is one travel website safe

The payment process for booking hotels is the same as for flights. You can redeem your Capital One miles for the trip or pay with your card.

Paying with your card may be the better option here, as multiple cards offer bonuses on hotels booked through Capital One Travel:

  • Venture X: 10 miles per dollar spent
  • Venture, VentureOne and Spark Miles: 5 miles per dollar spent
  • SavorOne, Quicksilver and Spark Cash Plus: 5% cash back

However, if you book hotels in a major loyalty program — like Marriott Bonvoy or Hilton Honors — through Capital One Travel, you likely won't receive points. You also won't enjoy any elite status perks.

How to book rental cars through the Capital One travel portal

The process for rental cars is straightforward. Click "Car Rentals" at the top and enter your search criteria. You'll receive a list of options that can be filtered by car type, price per day, rental car company and specifications.

is one travel website safe

You can then reserve the car in a few clicks, with clear information about pick-up and drop-off.

is one travel website safe

With some rental car agencies — Hertz, Thrifty and Dollar — you can add your rewards number to the booking and likely enjoy the associated benefits. The option to add your loyalty number generally won't appear for other companies.

This is particularly appealing for Venture X cardholders , as you can earn 10 miles per dollar spent on rental car bookings and still enjoy the complimentary Hertz President's Circle status* that's included on the card.

Note that these car rentals earn rewards at the same rate as hotels booked through Capital One Travel:

*Upon enrollment eligible cardholders will maintain Hertz President's Circle status through Dec. 31, 2024. Please note, enrolling through the normal Hertz Gold Plus Rewards enrollment process (e.g., at Hertz.com) will not automatically detect a cardholder as being eligible for the program and cardholders will not be automatically upgraded to the applicable status tier. Additional terms apply.

Further things to consider about the Capital One travel portal

is one travel website safe

Capital One Travel packs a punch for cardholders, but there are a few additional things to remember.

First, consider checking alternative platforms like Google Flights for better prices or alternate routings before booking with Capital One. Credit card portals sometimes have higher prices and don't always show all available flight options. Be sure you're not paying more for the same itinerary.

Additionally, if you're planning on using your Venture miles or Spark miles at a rate of 1 cent apiece , you should always book directly with the travel provider (whether it's an airline, hotel or car rental company). Then, use the miles to cover that purchase. This ensures you get all of the benefits of booking directly while using your rewards at exactly the same redemption value.

Also, with 18 transfer partners , Capital One offers a range of options for transferring your miles at a 1:1 ratio. Before booking through the portal, compare prices against Capital One transfer programs. For instance, a $150 United flight can cost 15,000 Capital One miles through the portal or just 7,500 Avianca LifeMiles (plus minimal taxes and fees). In this instance, it makes more sense to transfer your Capital One miles to Avianca LifeMiles.

As noted, hotel and car rental reservations through Capital One Travel likely won't be eligible for perks in a given loyalty program. If your elite status is important, it's advisable to book directly with major chain hotels and most car rentals. However, if you're booking independently owned hotels or elite status isn't a concern, the Capital One travel portal may be a better option.

Finally, remember that Venture X cardholders enjoy $300 in annual credits for bookings made via Capital One Travel. Unlike the $300 credit on the Chase Sapphire Reserve , this only applies to purchases made through the portal. As a result, even if you'd rather book flights, hotels or car rentals directly with travel providers, you should still spend at least $300 on your Venture X through Capital One travel each year.

Bottom line

Capital One has made significant advancements in the travel space, including improved transfer partners, the introduction of a premium card and the opening of its flagship lounge in Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW).

The Capital One travel portal offers a user-friendly interface. With its detailed pricing and fare class information, you might consider especially using it for flight bookings. Additional features like CFAR coverage, price drop protection, rapid rebooking and price freeze add value for cardholders.

You can also earn bonus rewards for many Capital One Travel purchases across most of the issuer's card portfolio, making it a great option as you plan upcoming trips.

Latest Information for U.S. Citizens

Information for U.S. Citizens in Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza

U.S. citizens should heed the  Travel Advisory  for Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza. The U.S. Embassy continues to closely monitor the dynamic security situation in Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza. There are active military operations and active rocket and mortar fire in Gaza and the Gaza periphery.  Terrorist groups, lone-actor terrorists and other violent extremists continue plotting possible attacks in Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza. Terrorists and violent extremists may attack with little or no warning, targeting tourist locations, transportation hubs, markets/shopping malls, and local government facilities. Violence can occur in Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza without warning. If you require emergency assistance while in Israel, the West Bank or Gaza, contact the  U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem  by email ([email protected]).

Individuals seeking to depart Gaza  through the Rafah crossing into Egypt should monitor the  Palestinian General Authority for Crossings and Borders’ Facebook Page  for a list of those approved to cross. U.S. citizens, Lawful Permanent Residents, or immediate family (as listed below) who desire our assistance and have not already provided their information to the Department of State, please email U.S. Embassy Jerusalem at  [email protected]  with a copy of the individual’s travel document as well as an explanation or proof of relationship.

The U.S. government does not control the crossing lists nor determine who is permitted to depart Gaza or enter Egypt. Individuals must assess their own safety and risks in attempting to cross the border. Individuals permitted to enter Egypt will likely receive a 72-hour Egyptian visa; all those who cross should have a plan for onward travel from Egypt in this timeframe. U.S. citizens, LPRs and their immediate family members who successfully enter Egypt and require further consular assistance should contact the  U.S. Embassy in Cairo  via the  U.S. Citizens Services Navigator .  Individuals may apply for a U.S. visa at any U.S. Embassy or Consulate; U.S. immigration laws and regulations will apply.

If a name has appeared on a crossing list since November 1, we understand those individuals will be permitted to cross as long as the border remains open for foreign nationals. We urge U.S. citizens, LPRs, and their immediate family members who have appeared on one of these lists to cross as soon as possible – there is no guarantee the border will remain open. We continue to work in partnership with Egypt and Israel towards safe passage for U.S. citizens, LPRs, and their immediate family members.

Immediate family members of U.S. citizens include:

  • unmarried children under the age of 21, and
  • parents of U.S. citizens.

If the U.S. citizen is under 21, immediate family will also include any siblings who are also unmarried and under 21.

Immediate family members of LPRs include:

  • unmarried children under 21 years of age.

Is Jamaica Safe for Tourists and Solo Travelers?

There has been some speculation on the safety level of Jamaica. Travelers are interested in finding out if Jamaica is really safe or not.

Sarah Rand • Apr 1, 2024

is one travel website safe

Jamaica is a tropical destination in the heart of the Caribbean Sea with pristine beaches, thriving culture and a welcoming community. One of the most appealing features of Jamaica is its year round beach weather. There are also countless thrilling adventures available to tourists. Some of the most popular activities include exploring the Blue Hole, relaxing at the Seven Mile Beach and hiking up to the Dunn’s River Falls and Park. Travelers will also enjoy the trending bamboo raft experience on the Martha Brae River. During the river ride, travelers can relax and view the surrounding wildlife, swim or learn more about local historic sites. The cuisine of Jamaica is also wildly popular. The most popular foods offered around Jamaica are the beef patty, jerk chicken, goat curry, coco bread and ackee and saltfish.

Jamaica has a great tourism appeal . It even has an average of 4.1 million tourists that visit per year. But travelers should be sure to do their own research before visiting any new destination. Check out everything travelers should know about whether or not Jamaica is safe for travel.

Official Travel Advisories

is one travel website safe

Travel safety is a big component to having comfortable travels, so it should definitely be considered before departing. The safety conditions of destinations vary from place to place, so it is important to know what environment a traveler is entering. There are many travel advisories that travelers can reference. Some of the top options include the U.S. Department of State and Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). The U.S. Department of State posts regularly updated travel advisories and reports on varying destination’s cultures. According to their website , Jamaica is a level three destination due to crime and medical care. This rating means that travelers should reconsider travel to Jamaica. The CIA, on the other hand, has an informational travel advisory that provides details on local customs, environmental issues and the nations’ criminal concerns.

Health safety is another element which ultimately impacts travelers. To be sure of a potential travel destination, travelers should stay up to date on health information. The leading organizations that report the health status of varying countries include the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and World Health Organization (WHO). The CDC’s traveler health page provides critical health information. Travelers can discover the health status of Jamaica, available medications, common preventable illnesses and ways to stay safe in the unfamiliar environment. WHO’s website provides in-depth statistics on the health of Jamaica’s community. Travelers can find health data and assessments on the country’s online page .

is one travel website safe

Overall, Jamaica has a good reputation for safety. But according to high-profile travel advisories, Jamaica is not the safest country to visit. The country’s top safety concerns are violent crimes like robbery and sexual assault. While these issues threaten any type of traveler, solo travelers may be particularly susceptible to being targeted. Travelers should use their own discernment to determine if Jamaica is the right travel destination for them. But it is important to note that due to these safety concerns, it is recommended that travelers reconsider travel to Jamaica. For travelers who choose to visit Jamaica, there are ways to have a safe trip.

How to Stay Safe in Jamaica

is one travel website safe

Travelers should be sure to exercise increased caution if they choose to travel to and through Jamaica. There are some travel safety measures that travelers should implement into their travel plans to minimize the risk of danger. For example, travelers should avoid walking around at night, avoid secluded areas and stay alert of their surroundings. Since robberies are not uncommon, travelers should be sure to secure their personal belongings and valuables. Travelers should not flaunt expensive things. Another precaution would be to store valuables in secure places, like the safe at their accommodation.

Visitors of Jamaica should know that the police and health care of the country may differ from what they are used to. Local police have been reported to not respond effectively to incidents. And the country’s homicide rate, reported by the Government of Jamaica, is among the highest in the western hemisphere (especially over the last several years). While some tourist areas have security patrols, caution is still recommended. Street crime is the primary concern for travelers, so they should try to avoid any suspicious or illegal activity while exploring the country.

Transportation safety is also important for travelers going to Jamaica. Technically, travelers are recommended to avoid public buses. But tourists have boarded public transport in Jamaica seamlessly, so travelers should exercise safety precautions. If travelers choose to commute around Jamaica via bus they should board at main bus terminals and not carry large amounts of cash (smaller bills as well). The public transportation in bigger cities like Kingston is considered safer. So, travelers should keep that in mind.

Where to Stay in Jamaica

In many communities of Jamaica, violence is common. But that does not mean that there are no neighborhoods that are safer for travelers. Travelers should stay in resort areas during their trip to Jamaica. The most popular tourist areas are Negril, Montego Bay and Ocho Rios. Negril has long stretches of beach and has various resorts, rentals and restaurants close to the water. Montego Bay is the second largest city in Jamaica and is closest to the airport most travelers fly into. This area has great accommodations like beachside resorts but also offers gated communities. Montego Bay and Ocho Rios are the best options for beach activities and a lively scene. Ocho Rios is a place locals and tourists enjoy, so visitors can rest assured that they will be welcomed.

Best Time to Visit Jamaica

The weather in Jamaica is quite consistent and dependable. So, travelers do not often have to worry about missing the Caribbean sun. But the best time to visit is between November and December. During this time travelers can expect temperatures between 70 and 80 degrees. There are also deals on hotels and flights during this time, so visiting is more affordable . For context, the peak season is between January and March but it is much more expensive to visit.

People Also Ask

Is it safe to go out on your own in Jamaica? Generally, if travelers are unfamiliar with the country (and the places not to go) it is not a good idea to explore alone. This is especially true if travelers do not have their own vehicle.

Is Jamaica safe for female solo travelers? Certain parts of the country pose a threat to female solo travelers. Travelers should stay in tourist friendly areas and exercise increased travel precautions.

We're ready, are you? The countdown to the total solar eclipse has begun!

Last minute preparations

Eclipse weather.

There's only one week left until the total solar eclipse 2024 is visible across North America! Are you ready?

Memories will be made when the moon crosses in front of the sun and turns the daytime sky dark. The total solar eclipse will travel through Mexico, 15 U.S. States and Canada and will be one of the most-watched eclipses ever. You can view the entire path of totality including start and end times for different stages of the solar ellipse at each location in this helpful interactive map from NASA .

If you cannot watch the eclipse in person you can watch the total solar eclipse live here on Space.com courtesy of NASA. Coverage will begin at 1 p.m. EDT (1700 GMT) . You can also keep up with all the actions with our total solar eclipse 2024 live updates blog.

As we get closer to April 8, more reliable meteorological weather forecasts will become available. NOAA's Weather Prediction Center is a great place to find increasingly reliable forecasts, which can help you decide on a viewing location where the probability of cloud cover is low. While we are all wishing for clear skies, we can't help but wonder how clouds could impact the viewing experience. It turns out a cloudy forecast might not be as bad as you would initially think, as it all depends on the type, thickness and extent of the cloud cover. You can read more about what happens if it's cloudy during the eclipse and how to give yourself the best chance of clear skies in our helpful guides

With so many people flocking to watch the eclipse safety is the top priority. Here we've compiled a couple of guides on How to stay safe during the eclipse and also how to avoid getting stuck in traffic on the big day.

Everyone observing the partial phases of this eclipse — and for those outside the path of totality, that's the entire event — will need to wear solar eclipse glasses while cameras, telescopes and binoculars will need solar filters placed in front of their lenses.

Only those in the path of totality will be able to remove them briefly to see the sun's corona with their naked eyes. Those not in the path of totality must keep them on the entire time. Our how to observe the sun safely guide tells you everything you need to know about safe solar observations.

Solar eclipse glasses are crucial for most to safely observe the eclipse, but with such high demand for the vital piece of kit, fake eclipse glasses are rife. The American Astronomical Society (AAS) is warning people about the risks of counterfeit and knock-off solar glasses so we have come up with a guide to how to check yours are safe .

Do not try to manage suicidal thoughts or behavior on your own. You need professional help and support to overcome the problems linked to thoughts about taking your life.

Your doctor or mental health professional can help you learn different ways to cope and solve problems. Consider talking about these coping strategies with people who know you well, such as family members or trusted friends.

You may be urged to do things you do not feel like doing, such as talking with friends when you'd rather stay in your bedroom all day. It will get easier to do these things as they become habits.

Make a plan for life

Create a written plan of action or a "safety plan" with your mental health professional. You can refer to this plan when you're thinking about suicide or are in a crisis. A safety plan includes what makes you think about suicide and how you can cope with those thoughts. Learn to spot your warning signs early, so you can put your plan into action.

Your plan is a checklist of activities and actions you promise to do to stay safe when you have thoughts of suicide, such as:

  • Contact your doctor, therapist or crisis center to help you cope with thoughts of taking your life.
  • Call a supportive family member or friend who can help you cope with your suicidal thoughts.
  • Try specific healthy and enjoyable activities when negative thoughts start to intrude.
  • Review why your life is valuable and the reasons to live.

Even if the immediate crisis passes, see a doctor or mental health professional. This will help you get the right treatment for suicidal thoughts and depression so that you do not always have to be in crisis mode.

As part of your plan, take these steps:

  • Follow your treatment plan. Commit to taking your medicine as prescribed and attending all treatment sessions and appointments.
  • Keep a list of contact names and numbers available. Include your doctors, therapists and crisis centers that can help you cope with thoughts of taking your life. Include friends or loved ones who agree to be available as part of your safety plan.
  • Remove possible means of killing yourself. This may include ridding your home of guns, razors, or other objects you could use to hurt or kill yourself. If possible, give your medicines to someone who can keep them for you and help you take them as prescribed.
  • Schedule daily activities. Activities that calm and comfort you can make a difference — such as listening to music, watching a funny movie or visiting a park. Or try something different. Because physical activity and exercise may reduce depression symptoms, think about walking, jogging, swimming, gardening or trying a new activity.
  • Get together with others. Create your support network by reaching out to friends, family and people who care about you and are there when you need them. Try to be social, even if you do not feel like it. This will help keep you from becoming isolated.
  • Join a support group. Joining a support group can help you cope with suicidal thoughts and help you learn that there are many options in your life other than suicide.
  • Stay away from drugs and alcohol. Rather than numb painful feelings, alcohol and drugs can increase suicidal thoughts and the chance you'll harm yourself. Alcohol and drugs can make you more impulsive and more likely to act on feelings to harm yourself.
  • Avoid risky websites on the internet. Stay away from chatrooms, social media sites or websites that may urge suicide as a way to solve your problems.
  • Write about your thoughts and feelings. Consider writing about the things in your life that you value and appreciate, no matter how small they may seem at the time.

Look beyond thoughts of suicide

The hopelessness you feel as you consider suicide may be the side effect of a very hard situation or an illness that can be treated. This emotion can be so overpowering that it clouds your judgment and leads you to believe that taking your life is the best, or only, option. But with help, you can change how you think about your situation:

  • Keep in mind that suicidal feelings are temporary. With the right treatment, you can learn how to help yourself feel better about life again. Asking others for support can help you see that you have other options and give you hope about the future.
  • Create a list of your reasons to live. This list can include being alive for your pet, your children, a favorite relative or best friend, or something that you enjoy doing at work or at home. It does not matter what the list includes, but finding a sense of purpose in your life can make a difference.

By getting proper treatment and using effective coping strategies, you can learn to manage or rid yourself of suicidal thoughts and create a more satisfying life.

Forgot to get solar eclipse glasses? Here's how to DIY a viewer with household items.

is one travel website safe

By now, everyone has heard that the rare 2024 total solar eclipse is coming – and it's got people excited.

While cities brace for traffic, schools brace for absences and space enthusiasts are planning parties, the glasses that enable safe viewing of the eclipse have become something of a hot commodity.

Peeking directly at the eclipse before it reaches totality without proper eye protection can cause permanent eye damage, experts have warned, making glasses a necessity for safe viewing. But, as the day approaches, they may become harder to find .

Luckily, people who didn't manage to get their hands on glasses are not completely down and out. There are other safe ways to view the eclipse, say experts, and a lot of them only require a little bit of craftiness and items you can find lying around the house.

Here are a few DIY eclipse viewers you can make at home.

As a reminder, none of these options allow you to look directly at the eclipse: you need special eclipse glasses for that.

Solar eclipse guide: When is the 2024 total solar eclipse? Your guide to glasses, forecast, where to watch.

NASA's DIY cereal box viewer

This NASA project uses components you almost certainly already have at home. Using a cereal box, cardboard, foil, paper, scissors and tape or glue, you can put together this projection eclipse viewer.

As always, NASA advises not to look directly into the sun using this tool.

Steps to make the cereal box eclipse viewer:

  • Get an empty, clean cereal box.
  • Cut a white piece of cardboard that will fit snuggly in the bottom of the box, or secure it permanently by gluing it in place.
  • Cut the top of the cereal box, removing both ends and leaving the center intact.
  • Put a piece of tape across the center of the top to securely hold it closed.
  • Tape a piece of heavy-duty foil or double a single layer for additional strength, covering one of the openings at the top of the cereal box. The other opening will remain open for viewing.
  • Using a small nail (approximately 3mm in diameter) push a hole in the foil.
  • Cover the entire box with construction paper, leaving the single-viewing opening and the foil uncovered.

How to use the DIY viewer :

  • The finished box should be held with the pin-hole side facing the sun. It may take a little practice pointing the box.
  • With your back facing the sun, look through the viewing opening. A small image of the sun, about ½ cm in diameter can be seen projected on the white paper inside the box.

Watch the demo here:

The Planetary Society DIY paper viewer

While the Planetary Society also offers instructions for box or projector viewers that are more "fancy," as they put it, it doesn't get easier than their simple pinhole paper projector.

To make it, you only need two index cards (3-by-5 or A6 or A7 size) or small paper plates for each person and basic pushpins. Simply use the pushpin to punch a small hole close to the middle of one of the cards and you're done.

Another super easy version that requires no crafting? A kitchen colander. An ordinary kitchen colander can easily be used to view a solar eclipse in the same way as other projector viewers; the colander's circular holes project crescent images of the sun onto the ground.

To make the "fancier" version, you'll need 2 index cards (larger, 5-by-7 or A5 cards work better for this) or small paper plates for each person, a pencil, pushpins and a towel, sweatshirt, blanket, flattened corrugated cardboard box, carpet, or other soft substrate to place underneath card during pin pushing.

To make the fancier version:

  • Draw a simple design on a card. The lines should not be too close together
  • Place the card on top of something soft (blanket, towel, etc)
  • Using the push pin, make small holes along your design lines. Not too close together – about 5 millimeters (1/4 inch) apart.

To use it, you'll again want to avoid looking directly at the sun:

  • Go to your eclipse observing spot and make sure you can see the shadow of your head and shoulders clearly.
  • Hold up the card with the hole on top of your shoulder so that you can see the shadow of the card above the shadow of your shoulder.
  • Now hold up the other card and make sure you can see its shadow, too.
  • Move the second card and watch how its shadow moves. Keeping the card in front of you, move its shadow until the second card's shadow overlaps the first card's shadow.
  • Now look at the second card. You should see a dot on the card for every hole you punched. Those dots are actually images of the sun.

Cardboard or paper tube eclipse viewer

Sticking with the theme of using items you can easily find around the house, tube viewers can be made using cardboard tubes from household items like paper towels or toilet paper rolls. You can also use thick cardstock rolled up and taped to make your own tube.

To make one, you'll need a cardboard tube, white paper, aluminum foil, tape and a pushpin or something else sharp to poke a small hole. According to "Let's Talk Science," you can put this viewer together with these steps :

  • Trace the opening of the tube on a piece of white paper. Draw a slightly bigger circle around it. Cut around the bigger circle. Cut small slits to the inner circle.
  • Cut an opening near one end of the tube to make a viewing window.
  • Tape the paper circle to the end of the tube near the viewing window.
  • Cut a piece of aluminum foil that is a bit larger than the opening of the tube.
  • Poke a small hole in the center of the aluminum foil.
  • Tape the aluminum foil over the other opening of the tube.

How to use the viewer:

  • With your back to the sun, hold the tube parallel to the path of the sun. Look through the viewing hole. Move the viewer until a small white circle appears on the paper.

Solar Eclipse Spectacle: Key Times and Streaming Options You Should Know

T he " great American eclipse " is almost here, and you shouldn't let this rare celestial event pass you by. On Monday, the last  total solar eclipse  over North America  until 2044  will be visible for several minutes. If you don't see this one, it's a 20-year wait for the next.

A  total solar eclipse  happens when the moon passes between the Earth and the sun, blocking the sun and turning an otherwise sunny day to darkness for a short period of time. Depending on the angle at which you're viewing the eclipse, you may see the sun completely shrouded by the moon (called totality) or some variation of it. The more off-angle you are and the farther you are from the path of the eclipse, the less likely you'll be to see the totality.

The  2024 total solar eclipse  will happen on Monday. It will reach the Mexican Pacific coast on April 8 at 11:07 a.m. PT (2:07 p.m. ET), and then traverse the US in a northeasterly direction from Texas to Maine and on into easternmost Canada.

Not everyone can travel to see it, but you may happen to live somewhere on that path of totality. Here's a look at some of the options to nab a chance to see this rare sight, and what to know about the great American eclipse.

Total solar eclipse path

The eclipse will cross over the Pacific coast of Mexico and head northeast over mainland Mexico. The eclipse will then make its way over San Antonio at approximately 2:30 p.m. ET on April 8 and move through Texas, over the southeastern part of Oklahoma and northern Arkansas by 2:50 p.m. ET.

By 3 p.m. ET, the eclipse will be over southern Illinois, and just 5 minutes later, will be traveling over Indianapolis. Folks in northwestern Ohio will be treated to the eclipse by 3:15 p.m. ET, and it will then travel over Lake Erie and Buffalo, New York, by 3:20 p.m. ET. Over the next 10 minutes, the eclipse will be seen over northern New York state, then over Vermont. By 3:35 p.m. ET, the eclipse will work its way into Canada and off the Eastern coast of North America.

Best places to watch the Great American Eclipse

When evaluating the best places to watch this year's total eclipse, you'll first want to determine where you'll have the best angle to see the totality. The farther off-angle you are -- in other words, the farther north or south of the eclipse's path -- the less of an impact you can expect.

Therefore, if you want to have the best chance of experiencing the eclipse , you'll want to be in its path. As of this writing, most of the cities in the eclipse's path have some hotel availability, but rooms are getting pricey. Major cities on the path include San Antonio, Dallas and Austin in Texas; Columbus and Cleveland in Ohio; Indianapolis; Little Rock, Arkansas; and Buffalo and Rochester in New York.

You could even book a seat in the sky -- Delta Airlines made headlines for offering two flights that allow you to see the entire path of totality. Its first eclipse flight, from Austin, Texas, to Detroit, sold out quickly, with Delta offering a second from Dallas to Detroit that still has seats available. Delta also has five other flights that will (coincidentally) offer  prime eclipse viewing .

Can't travel? Where to watch the eclipse live stream

NASA will be hosting a 3-hour live stream of the eclipse starting at 1 p.m. ET, with commentary by NASA experts, astronauts on the international space station and looks at watch parties across the nation. It will feature views from locations in the path of totality, including Dallas and Kerrville, Texas; Russellville, Arkansas; NASA's Glenn Research Center in Ohio; Indianapolis; Carbondale, Illinois; Niagara Falls, New York; and Houlton, Maine.

You can watch the live broadcast on streaming service NASA Plus , NASA TV or on NASA's website . Nasdaq will also carry coverage of part of the NASA TV broadcast and will live stream it on its screen in Times Square .

Eclipse eye safety and photography

As with any solar eclipse, it's critical you keep eye safety in mind.

During the eclipse, and especially during the periods before and after totality, don't look directly at the sun without special eye protection. Also, be sure not to look at the sun through a camera (including the camera on your phone), binoculars, a telescope or any other viewing device. This could cause serious eye injury. Sunglasses aren't enough to protect your eyes from damage.

If you want to view the eclipse, you'll instead need solar viewing glasses that comply with the ISO 12312-2 safety standard. Anything that doesn't meet that standard or greater won't be dark enough to protect your eyes. Want to get them for free? If you've got a Warby Parker eyeglasses store nearby, the company is giving away free, ISO-certified solar eclipse glasses at all of its stores from April 1 until the eclipse, while supplies last.

If you don't have eclipse viewing glasses handy, you can instead use indirect methods for viewing the eclipse, like a pinhole projector.

Read more: A Photographer's Adventure With the Eclipse

In the event you want to take pictures of the eclipse , attach a certified solar filter to your camera. Doing so will protect your eyes and allow you to take photos while you view the eclipse through your lens.

There's also a new app to help you both protect your eyes and take better photos of the eclipse on your phone . Solar Snap, designed by a former Hubble Space Telescope astronomer, comes with a Solar Snap camera filter that attaches to the back of an  iPhone  or  Android  phone, along with solar eclipse glasses for protecting your eyesight during the event. After you attach the filter to your phone, you can use the free Solar Snap Eclipse app to zoom in on the eclipse, adjust exposure and other camera settings, and ultimately take better shots of the eclipse.

Watching the total eclipse from space

You don't even have to be on Earth to watch the eclipse. Astronauts aboard the International Space Station will have multiple chances to witness this rare event.

"(Astronauts) aboard the orbiting laboratory will have three opportunities to view the ground shadow (penumbra and umbra) of the moon as it tracks across the Earth surface during the total solar eclipse,"  NASA said . "After encountering the eclipse shadow above the Pacific Ocean, then during a pass from the New Zealand area to California and Idaho, the space station is predicted to encounter the eclipse during a time of near-to-full totality while over Maine and New Brunswick around 3:30 p.m. EDT."

But the astronauts still need to protect their eyes, just as Earth's eclipse-watchers do.

"Safety first still applies in space!"  NASA wrote in an Instagram post . "The crew will not directly image the eclipse for the same reason we here on Earth should not look directly at the sun during the eclipse, except during the brief total phase of a total solar eclipse, when the Moon completely blocks the sun's bright face."

Even those of us on earth can help out NASA. The  Eclipse Soundscapes Project  is a NASA Citizen Science project studying how eclipses impact life on Earth. The project is asking for the public's help, and it'll use gathered information to revisit a century-old eclipse study about how animals and insects are affected by solar eclipses.

The  simplest way to get involved  is to read up on how to use your observations from that day to help NASA gather information. Sign up, and then go outside on eclipse day and record your observations and share them as requested. Observers can be on the path of totality, but they don't have to be. NASA will give participants a certificate for submitting their observations.

2024 eclipse compared to 2017

The last total solar eclipse occurred in 2017, and many Americans had a great view. Although there are plenty of similarities between the 2017 total solar eclipse and the one coming April 8, there are a handful of differences. Mainly, the 2024 eclipse is going to cover more land and last longer.

The 2017 eclipse started over the northwest US and moved southeast. Additionally, that eclipse's path was up to 71 miles wide, compared with a maximum width of 122 miles for this year's eclipse. Perhaps most importantly, the moon completely covered the sun for just 2 minutes, 40 seconds in 2017. This year, maximum totality will last for nearly four-and-a-half minutes.

For more on the Great American Eclipse, check out CNET's coverage on expert eye protection and viewing tips , where to get free solar eclipse glasses ,  how to figure out if your eclipse glasses are safe or fake  and whether your solar panels will be affected by the total solar eclipse .

CNET staffer Stephen Shankland took this photo of the 2017 eclipse in Weiser, Idaho, using a Canon 7D Mark II camera with a 100-400mm lens with 1.4x telephoto adapter.

Section of California's scenic Highway 1 collapses in storm

SAN FRANCISCO — Authorities urged motorists to avoid California’s Highway 1 along the central coast after a section of the scenic route collapsed during an  Easter weekend storm , forcing closures and stranding motorists near Big Sur, authorities said.

The collapse occurred amid heavy rain Saturday afternoon near Rocky Creek Bridge about 17 miles south of Monterey, sending chunks of asphalt tumbling into the ocean from the southbound side of the two-lane road.

The highway was closed in both directions in the mountainous area of California’s central coast as engineers assessed the damage, said the state Department of Transportation, or Caltrans.

“We are working on a plan to get motorists evacuated from the area,” the California Highway Patrol said Saturday.

The Rocky Creek closure on California Highway 1 on March 31, 2024, in Monterey County, Calif., following heavy rain in the area.

Around noon on Sunday, crews had determined that travel in the northbound lane was safe, and authorities began periodically escorting motorists around the damaged section. About 300 cars were waiting to travel northbound when officials led the first convoy through the area, the  San Francisco Chronicle  reported.

Some stranded motorists had slept in their cars overnight while others were sheltered at the nearby Big Sur Lodge, the newspaper said.

Caltrans spokesperson Kevin Drabinski said periodic convoys would continue over the coming days as crews shore up the highway, which had other closures because of rocks and debris in lanes. He urged people to avoid the area.

The famous route has seen frequent closures because of collapses, mud flows and rockslides during severe weather.

The slow-moving storm dumped heavy rain at lower elevations and more than a foot of snow at Sierra Nevada ski resorts around Lake Tahoe.

Ryan Kittell, a National Weather Service meteorologist, said the system is typical for March but was not  an atmospheric river like many of the other storms  that have pounded the state in recent winters.

The storm exited the San Francisco Bay Area on Friday and “just marched right down the California coast,” bringing most of the rainfall to the Los Angeles area, Kittell said.

The storm then parked itself over Southern California, where it was expected to stay until Sunday night or into Monday. Showers and possible thunderstorms, with the potential for lightning and damaging winds, were still possible for parts of Santa Barbara, Ventura and L.A. counties.
