The saying “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure” rings true for this 1973 Prowler camper. Imgur user ranbn8 bought the vintage trailer off Craigslist for only $1,000 and gave it a total (and much needed) restoration.

“I had been looking for a small single-axle vintage camper for awhile,” The owner shared on his Imgur gallery . “These vintage campers are getting hard to find and those that aren’t completely rotted beyond repair sell for a premium. I guess something is only worth what people will pay for it. I was one of six people to answer the ad that was posted early AM. I showed up with the cash first and it was sold before noon. Much of the inside was rotten since the camper had been left out in the elements for so long. It had also caused most of the PVC pipes to freeze and a critter had made itself at home in the refrigerator access panel.

The roof was leaky and in bad need of a cleaning. You can see the difference in this photo after half the roof was pressure washed:

The bathroom was in the worst shape. They needed to replace the walls in addition to the inner framework.

And voilà! Some wood paneling and beer decor gave the room a new and improved look.

They installed an inverter and two golf cart batteries to run the A/C, lights, and stereo.

The stereo receiver and subwoofer were placed under the bed. Speakers were set up throughout the inside and waterproof speakers outside.

The camper got all new hardwood flooring throughout.

And vintage beer ads were hung on the walls for decoration.

The windows were updated with new custom beer curtains. They also added in some matching throw pillows in the dinette.

The owner shares how the most time-consuming part of the restoration was the bodywork.

They first painted the yellow stripes and other yellow parts.

Then they taped off the yellow parts so the white paint could be applied.

The final step was topping off the camper with a clear coat for a nice glossy finish. The entire project took about 3 months and $4,000 total.

The camper, dubbed Der Bierwagen, has since been on several float trips on the Huzzah River, Table Rock Lake, and to a motorcycle rally.

You can’t have a battery inside a camper and the 2 6 volts certainly don’t look to be vented outside !

Batteries inside the living space? Lead acid batteries produce flammable hydrogen gas when they discharge

Does anyone have the manual for my vintage trailer? I’m looking for electrical diagrams for my trailer? Where can I buy a manual for my vintage trailer?

These are common refrains in our facebook group and that come in to our email inbox. First off, it amazes me that people ask for a manual when typically no one ever reads the manual in the first place.

Lets start with the fact that most trailer manufacturers didn’t create manuals but what you got with a trailer was a pile of paperwork consisting of owners manuals for each appliance installed in the coach. There probably wasn’t a manual for the coach itself. The appliances aren’t coach brand specific, they used pretty much the same components for every brand.

If a manual was created, most people never open the manual and set them aside and they were eventually lost over time. If you find a manual, treat it like the rarity it is and then help others by publishing it online so others can benefit from it. The Tin Can Tourists offer a wiki for brands and we encourage our members to send us this information to share with others.

They weren’t thinking about the future for when someone wanted to restore a trailer. Most were hoping to survive the first year and many were very small operations with just a few guys in a garage. Hiring a technical writer wasn’t even a consideration. If a manufacturer grew and become really successful, then maybe this became a possibility.

Vintage trailers are very basic systems, that’s why we like them right? They really are pretty simple when it come to electrical, plumbing, propane, lighting, running gear, etc. The concepts and standards haven’t changed for a long, long time. Almost all trailer brands shared the same suppliers for their systems. Because of this, ask your questions to owners of any vintage trailer and you’ll likely to get an answer that will work for your brand.

Hello I was fortunate to have the original manual for my 1987 Airstream Excella. It also has sub manualsfor Dometic Refrigerator RM2820 and older equipment like Coleman Delta TX AC,Suburban heater,shurfow water pump and others.

We have all of the original manuals and Appliance manuals are our 1965 Silver Streak Atlas 26 and 1984 Avion 30p if someone needs these manuals.

I am brand new to campers. I just purchased a 1989 Terry Resort 14′ camper. I realize after reading this thread that a chance of a manual is slim to none. I would appreciate some direction. The camper is original. Everything works. Bearings have just been repacked. It was suggested I change out the lightbulbs to LEDs. I need a mattress for the rear bed but the measurement is wanky, probably start with a cut to order foam. HELP! TIA

You don’t have to change out the bulbs but they are far more efficient and generate no heat. I switched mine out to be able to run longer on solar. You are on the right thinking for the mattress. By foam and cut or there are companies that do mattresses for boats with odd shapes and sizes. They can do custom orders but of course they are expensive.

Looking for manual to my 1955 Scotsman, or any original interior layouts. Also on both sides up towards the front.. side neither has a window. Wood is all original but can’t seem to find any other trailer that looks like mine on the internet. The inside was pretty much gutted so I have no idea what my trailer was like on the inside. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I’m looking for a manual for a 1950 ish “M”System camper trailer. Or at least a suitable replacement tire specs. I’m trying to get a stripped down one moved to my house. Then I’ll worry about fixing it!

Mr. Landey had been a tent trailer distributor for several years when he felt he could design and produce better quality units than were currently being offered to the public. He would design units which were lightweight and offered convenient floorplans at affordable prices. He began designing and producing Palomino pop-up tent trailers in a small building in Savage, Minnesota. As demand for the Palomino grew, Mr. Landey felt it would benefit his company, Vanguard Ind., to relocate. With most manufacturers and industry suppliers located in the Elkhart, In. area the move eastward seemed logical. Vanguard Industries settled in the community of Colon in 1972. Once in Colon he began to put his plans in motion. By 1973 he had built the main production facility and within days Palomino tent trailers were rolling out the doors. In 1976, Vanguard added its own Needle Division, in 1978 its own Metal Fabrication Plant, and has several cold storage facilities. On May 27, 1992, the primary production building and offices were destroyed by fire. By late August, 1992, the first 1993 model Palomino rolled of the line in the new 52,300 sq. ft. facility, which was built on the same site as the previous building had been. The year 1998 continued to see expansion with the addition of a new 75,000 sq. ft. production facility, and another storage facility. In 2002 Vanguard was purchased by Forest River, Inc. This allowed for rapid growth and the introduction of two new towable lines of travel trailers and fifth wheels, Puma and Sabre by Palomino. In 2005, Forest River, Inc. and it's divisions were acquired by Berkshire Hathaway. On May 27, 1992, the primary production building and offices were destroyed by fire. By late August, 1992, the first 1993 model Palomino rolled of the line in the new 52,300 sq. ft. facility, which was built on the same site as the previous building had been. The year 1998 continued to see expansion with the addition of a new 75,000 sq. ft. production facility, and another storage facility. In 2002 Vanguard was purchased by Forest River, Inc. This allowed for rapid growth and the introduction of two new towable lines of travel trailers and fifth wheels, Puma and Sabre by Palomino. In 2005, Forest River, Inc. and it's divisions were acquired by Berkshire Hathaway. Palomino RV operates as a separate division of Forest River Inc., and has grown from humble beginnings in Minnesota to one of the top 5 RV manufacturing facilities in North America. Mr. Landey had been a tent trailer distributor for several years when he felt he could design and produce better quality units than were currently being offered to the public. He would design units which were lightweight and offered convenient floorplans at affordable prices. He began designing and producing Palomino pop-up tent trailers in a small building in Savage, Minnesota. As demand for the Palomino grew, Mr. Landey felt it would benefit his company, Vanguard Ind., to relocate. With most manufacturers and industry suppliers located in the Elkhart, In. area the move eastward seemed logical. Vanguard Industries settled in the community of Colon in 1972. Once in Colon he began to put his plans in motion. By 1973 he had built the main production facility and within days Palomino tent trailers were rolling out the doors. In 1976, Vanguard added its own Needle Division, in 1978 its own Metal Fabrication Plant, and has several cold storage facilities. On May 27, 1992, the primary production building and offices were destroyed by fire. By late August, 1992, the first 1993 model Palomino rolled of the line in the new 52,300 sq. ft. facility, which was built on the same site as the previous building had been. The year 1998 continued to see expansion with the addition of a new 75,000 sq. ft. production facility, and another storage facility. In 2002 Vanguard was purchased by Forest River, Inc. This allowed for rapid growth and the introduction of two new towable lines of travel trailers and fifth wheels, Puma and Sabre by Palomino. In 2005, Forest River, Inc. and it's divisions were acquired by Berkshire Hathaway. Palomino RV operates as a separate division of Forest River Inc., and has grown from humble beginnings in Minnesota to one of the top 5 RV manufacturing facilities in North America.
